Style Stories with Madeleine Park (Madeleine Park)

What better way to kick off Season 10 than with a live broadcast of the East Sydney Fashion Feast, an event I hosted and produced at Kings Cross’ Ezra Restaurant as part of the Eastside Unlocked Festival. With the help of our couture designer darling, Mariam Seddiq, and Sharon Salloum, the lady acclaimed for modernising Middle Eastern food in Australia, the lunch met it’s goal of being an elegant afternoon of food, fashion and fun! Together we explored the influence Sharon and Mariam’s Middle Eastern and Middle Asian heritages had on their crafts, highlighting the similarities and differences between the food and fashion industries, with an accent on sustainable practices. The guests broke the bread, they shared the wine and they sat back, relaxed and got a taste of both Mariam’s and Sharon’s stories and I hope you can too.

In episode 2 of season 9 I chat with Rachel Rutt, model, artist and designer of cult knitwear & crochet label, Rutt Australia. While Rachel may be a familiar face, gracing the pages of all the style glossies, fashion hasn’t always come naturally. Like her craft her story is an inter-twined web of diverse experiences leading her to a site of substance and style but always circling back to a place that respects and reveres the beauty of nature. Whether she’s foraging in a rural commune, weaving on a wool farm or basking in the beauty of the beach, Rachel has mastered the art of knitting the practical with the pleasing and it’s her style to do it with colour and free-flowing charm.

In episode 6 of season 9  I chat with Anna McLeod, Global Content and Communications Manager at the Woolmark company. Working with wool may have been written in Anna’s stars, but it’s taken twists of travel and the turns of time to return her to a place that sits at the heart of her story. And while she may have left forward focussed frontiers and fast fashion behind her, she remains serious about style. Whether it be investing in the well-made, treasuring totems of her past, or being passionate about her purpose on the planet, Anna is a marriage of the classic and the considerate and it’s her style to simply lay this out in black and white.

In Episode 2 of Season 12, I chat with Ronni Kahn AO, social entrepreneur and founder and CEO of food rescue charity OzHarvest. Ronni may call herself an accidental activist but her upbringing founded on principles of generosity and purpose have made her contribution to repairing the world, her calling. OzHarvest gave Ronni a force to find her voice and share her heart and now she colours the world yellow with abundant warmth, engendering joy wherever she goes. And whilst Ronni is rightfully revered for her altruistic work, she’s also widely recognised for her eclectic style. Whether it’s Indian cheesecloth, oversized accessories or just that happy slap of yellow, Ronni’s style not only stands out but stands for her sense of purpose and repurpose. 

In Episode 6 of Season 11, I chat with Denise Cheng, National Manager - Active Philanthropy for Equity Trustees and Board Member of Dress for Success Sydney. Denise has devoted her career to giving back to others, inspired by the strong sense of community that was instilled in her at school and at home. And while Denise focusses on fairness, she has broken free from the perfectionist mould her younger self once built around her. One to have always coloured between the lines, Denise now colours outside them exposing her classic style to a little more flair, a lot more fun, and the freedom to express her authentic and vulnerable self.

In episode 3 of season 9 I chat with Jess Nathan, best known for meeting her love match on Australian dating show, Farmer Wants a Wife. While Jess may have once had lofty goals of wanting to be on television, the reality of the spotlight has proven things are not always as they seem. Despite being painted as the heart-breaking city girl, in the light of day Jess is a country girl at heart. And now she is all shacked up with farmer Andrew in rural Delegate, it’s her return to the good old country values of being practical, taking only what you need and considering community that have come to define her style.

In episode one of season two, I chat with Ali Smyth, director of PR firm Electric Collective and part-owner of food and music venues, the Landsdowne, the Unicorn, and Mary’s. Whilst Lucio’s represents the old guard of Sydney eateries, Ali is part of a new wave of the industry, reviving iconic venues with heart, guts, and vision. And it’s this energetic and soulful grit that feeds through all Ali does, whether it be PR girl, restaurant owner, or mum. But most importantly it defines her unique sense of style. In the finale of season three, I chat with Rosie Cremer, better known as burlesque stage sensation Rosie Rivette. While Rosie may be famous for baring it all, what clothes she puts on prove to be as revealing as what she takes off. Rosie’s colourful style references the great pin-up girls of the past, not just for their girly glamour but for their kookiness, curves, and comedy. Josh and I met about 10 years ago working at NW magazine and he left a significant first impression and NOT because of what he was wearing. This season as we were forced to sit still, I wanted to travel through the stories of people in other places and explore how they were stepping out with a renewed sense of style. But like everyone else I really wanted to step out too! After a difficult socially distanced year the natural extrovert in me was desperate to socialise, interact and experience life outside my own home.

So this is the Style Stories: Stepping Out live bonus episode where I was grateful to have the opportunity to host and record a live presentation and fashion parade at Grand Days, my favourite vintage store in Kings Cross, in front of a room full of actual people.

Translating Style Stories into a live setting was always a goal for 2021 not only to enhance the visual experience of stories about fashion and style but to strengthen, grow and connect with my circle of listeners and the creative community I have come to belong to.

As the world casts its eyes downwards, economically speaking, I want to know how can we look up to fashion? Where in clothing do we understand purpose and what are the stories that give this sentiment power? 

Season 11 of Style Stories aims to address these questions by delving into some of the soul reaching stories coming from the community of Dress for Success Sydney, the not for profit organisation whose mission is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing the clothing, confidence and community to help women thrive in work and in life. 

This series will continue to share stories of creative people with a strong sense of style, but with women who not only understand how we dress serves a purpose to success but are able to circle back to the significant impact clothing can have on confidence and community.

In episode five of season two, I chat with Stavroula Adameitis, artist & designer better known by her moniker Frida Las Vegas. Hailing from Adelaide, Stav’s kitsch and clever designs are personal hallmarks of her history and offer nostalgic references to her beloved ‘Oz-traliana’. If Chico Rolls, Passiona, and the much-shunned bin chicken resonate with your Australian sensibilities, you’ll be sure to glean joy from Stav’s bombastic designs. In episode 4 of season 8, I sit down with Fashion Designer, Nicole Oliveria, who was the Head Dresser and my general right-hand woman for our Vivid event, Fashion’s Flash: Back to the Future. From the moment Nicole dropped into my inbox, I knew she would be integral to the project not only because she happens to design the coolest collection of up-cycled clothes but because she always gives careful consideration to history, identity and culture to both her style and her story. Shaped by her Filipino heritage and her Western Sydney upbringing, her sustainable methodologies and modern aesthetic not only promise hope for a future of circular fashion but as a designer, make her one to watch. Oh and she’s an absolute joy to be around, with a heart of gold and can nerd out or cry over all the little fashion details just like the best of us.

In episode 11 of Style Stories: Stepping Out, I chat with Anna-Lisa Yabsley, Global Digital Strategy Lead & Executive Director of Content Strategy for US Vogue. While Anna-Lisa grew up in Australia and is now based in New York, it’s her parent’s heritage that had the greatest impact on her style. From vintage concert tees to Cary Grant and Slim Aarons references, Anna-Lisa may have turned to her mum and dad for style cues however today it’s it’s her laid back, practical nature that makes her style succeed. Whether she’s impressing Anna Wintour, being a jack of all trades, or simply building great relationships, Anna-Lisa’s analytical mind and friendly determination are what makes her stand out from a crowd and like her love for pop art, she keeps her style simple, putting all the little dots together to make one compelling whole.

In episode 2 of season 5 I chat with Liv Rahmé, fashion stylist, curve model and social media influencer. While Liv knows how to work impressive angles on both sides of the camera, it’s her strong attention to detail and a keen eye for colour palettes that’s defined her as a voice of authority in the fashion industry. And while her perfectionistic tendencies in her work like to see her stick to the rules, it’s the strength in which she’s broken them that define the sharp edge to her style.

Today I’m chatting with Cara Weinstock, owner of online vintage store Cara Mia Vintage. Cara is known by the fashion set for sourcing the creme de la creme of vintage couture in Australia. In episode three of season three, I chat with prolific portrait photographer, Gary Heery. Gary is known for capturing iconic images of iconic people but his more recent work offers the same insightful lens to more humble forms of physical life. In episode two of season four I chat with fashion and costume designer Katie-Louise Nicol-Ford, seamstress extraordinaire and co-founder of demi-couture label, Nicol + Ford. Costume as a cache for creativity came to Katie-Louise early in life, starting with the character of “Hula Girl”, but as we turn the pages of her colourful story and observe the various personas she’s played with along the way, we see her current role firmly lands her as the leading lady of her own glamorous narrative. No matter which role she takes on to the outside world, for Katie-Louise, fantasy & empowerment go hand-in-hand, characterise her source of self-confidence and are critical in defining her spirited style.

In episode 5 of season 7, I chat with self-proclaimed “creative slashie” Maggie Zhou, who credits the jobs of Writer, Producer, Podcaster and Influencer to her mulit-hyphenated portfolio career. Despite being an influential Gen Z (at the tender age of 22) Maggie’s voice strikes a different chord as she applies an honest, considerate tone to all she does including her clothes. In Episode 1 of Season 12, I chat with Charlotte Ree, devoted home cook and author of Heartbake, a personal memoir that not only chronicles Charlotte’s stories of love through her love of food but includes recipes to feed the heart and soul. Whether it’s on paper or in person, it’s Charlotte’s style to be open-mannered and lay her whole story out on the table. And of her lessons in love, she’s been taught not only to feed herself first but dress to please herself first too. Like her story, Charlotte’s style evolves naturally, is organically told and is open to heartache even if still hungry for a little love and romance.

Kate’s normal life involves running a busy team, attending press and fashion events and writing up a storm. In Episode 7 of Season 13, I chat with Nina Treffkorn, co-director of Sydney contemporary art gallery, China Heights. Born to Buddhist parents that moved from a German commune to a conservative catholic small town in Ireland where she was raised, it’s fair to say Nina has become used to looking at the world from the outside in. However her move to Sydney allowed her to discover a diverse art and fashion community she could belong to, and Nina has since found her place inside. And while it’s Nina’s style to lean into a uniform look as a tool to belong she is not strictly black and white. Nina may have stood out for her height as a child but she’s learnt the value of having a unique story and style and while she finds peace is staying centred she uses her individual assets to her advantage, leading her to greater heights.

In the finale of season 5, I chat with Katie McGrath, Chief People & Culture Officer with Seven West Media and author of her own true story, Deadly Earth. I read Katie’s book before we met and to be honest it struck such a strong emotional chord with me that I just wanted to make a human connection more than I had a desire to establish her relationship to style. We do still touch on fashion and Katie’s fearless style but this is a story of a strong, passionate woman whose shown grace in her quest for truth, identity and legacy. As our country faces it’s own trials, Katie’s story is a timely reminder of resilience and the power of the human spirit.

In episode 6 of Style Stories: Stepping Out, I chat with English actress, model and influencer Sophie Porley, best known for her role as Ellie Nightingale on the popular British soap Hollyoaks. Sophie may hail from Essex London, a place where white high heels and fake tans have been typecast as style but there is nothing fake about her. Today I am chatting with Aminata Conteh-Biger, founder & CEO of the Aminata Maternal Foundation and Special Representative for Australia with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).  As we wrap up Season 12, Stories with Heart, it seems only fitting I share a story, also told through Aminata's autobiography Rising Heart, that’s full of passion, strength and life. A former refugee from Sierra Leone, Aminata has seen unimaginable trauma and a gentle warning, this episode does contain sensitive material. Aminata may take hold of her own story however she never lets adversity define her style. Instead, she exudes an infectious deep-seated confidence that carries the unabashed colour and charisma she graciously wears on her sleeve. And while she may have been taught to find beauty from within it’s her style to act out and impel others to do the same.

In episode four of season three, I chat with Penny Lawson, self-diagnosed curd nerd, and owner of Potts Point’s favourite fromagerie, Penny’s Cheese Shop. In episode 2 of season 8, I chat with Hayley Pigram, urban Aboriginal artist represented by the Boomalli Aboriginal Artists Co-operative. Hayley handmade each unique artwork, made from lights, which have been integrated into the up-cycled fashion collection featured in the Vivid event, Fashion’s Flash: Back to the Future. While Hayley’s use of bright colours and desire to work with unusual art mediums naturally align her to this project, it’s her story of being a modern woman with an ancient heritage that has been the most poignant point of connectivity. Hayley’s sustainable fashion choices may often be practical in nature, however it’s her style to artfully push boundaries and challenge ideas for both herself and others. And it’s this desire for continuous development that sees Hayley’s confidence rise in the demonstration of her style and the telling of her story.

In episode one of season three, I chat with Bianca Raess, vintage fashion maestro and coordinator of the Wayside Chapel Op Shop. While Bianca stands as a beloved fixture in the Wayside community, graciously serving both those who give and those in need, her own life has travelled a varied path that has seen her take on diverse roles ranging from fruit picker to young mum to aspiring actress. For the first episode of the new year, I chat with Charlotte Dallison, author, writer & vintage fashion aficionado. Charlotte’s recently released book, How to be Fabulous, not only dares us to defy trends but to refresh our personal styles by diving deep into the world of pre-loved clothing. By sharing her story, Charlotte provides a gracious guide on how to think about style, including how her take on manifestation helped refresh not only her style but her story. In episode 3 of season 13, I chat with Georgie Vicars, founder of Jamoo. Like’s the label’s name suggests, Jamoo and Georgie alike are one of a kind. Inspired by the Australian coast, Jamoo is a playful pastiche of the past presenting itself in patch-worked pieces put together from a legion of repurposed towels Georgie has hunted, hoarded and handpicked. While Georgie likes to live in a moment and may still be mapping out her ensuing adventures, Jamoo stands as a reflection of her free childhood spent barefoot on the beach and sailing in the pacific paired with her care for craft and her talent for textiles. Amped up by sustainable ethics and a reverence for all things retro, the fabric of Georgie’s style and her story is one that feels bold yet benevolent, carefree but kind, and both cool and warm all at the same time.

Originally from Indonesia, Evi cut her teeth in design in the Sydney food publishing world, gaining a reputation for her clean-cut aesthetic, and balanced designs. As our days get colder and nights get longer, Season 5 of Style Stories aims to echo nature’s cycle to stop, adapt and recover by highlighting stories of rebuilding, restrengthening and reinvention after a period of struggle or turmoil.

In episode 1 of season 5 I chat with Cybele Malinowski, celebrated photographer and filmmaker. In episode 5 of Season 12, I’m chatting with Dana Tomic Hughes, self-confessed design tragic, interior designer, and founder of renowned design platform, Yellowtrace. Vogue may have hailed Dana as one of the most visionary women on the planet, but as narrative unfolds you’ll also find her to be one of the most tenacious, passionate and dedicated. Proud to have popped Dana’s podcast cherry, sharing her style and her story is emotional and a privilege, just the way she sees design. And despite it’s privilege Dana is determined to make design and beauty accessible to all, which she does with her colourful style that offers humour, sophistication and always tells a story.

The final episode of season 7 is a live broadcast of the season launch which I hosted at Dulcie’s Kings Cross in conjunction with the Potts Point Partnership and The Glittering Mile Festival. In keeping with the colourful, camp theme of the season, the night was a joyful celebration of self expression and included an interview with local drag queen, and wig & make-up artist extraordinaire, Mynx Moscato. While Mynx’s upbringing in suburban Diggers Rest may not have provided the colour they were seeking out, Sydney is where Mynx came to find their rainbow and earn their drag queen wings. Mynx not only gives us an entertaining encounter of their Style Story but some vivid tips on wig and make up trends to watch out for, some not for the faint-hearted!

In Episode 7 of Season 13, I chat with Nat Thaipun, who we may know as the winner of this season's MasterChef, but to her friends, she's Nat Wolf. Cooking may have now centred her, but Nat still doesn't mind living life on a knife's edge. Season 11 launches with a live broadcast of The Style Edit, the fundraising event I hosted and produced in association with DFS Sydney and in celebration of International Women’s Day. With the support of over 30 sponsors including Elms Store, Tan Temple and Soraya Tailoring, the Butler venue was jam-packed with warmth, positivity and a generosity of spirit. I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with Leisa Sadler, CEO of DFS Sydney and Naima Ibrahim, one of their beloved clients, who gave their take on the organisation and it’s significance to them. Across the sunlit venue, over a beautiful breakfast, we laughed, we cried and of course we shared our style and our stories. In episode 3 of season 7, I chat with Kim Bishop, Costume Designer and relative royalty in the world of Australian theatre. Whilst Kim has worked behind the scenes on all the big shows to grace our stages, think The Boy From Oz, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Rocky Horror Show, it’s Kim’s attention to detail and careful consideration of the subject that makes him the star. When it comes to his characters, Kim wants his costumes to tell you the whole story and it’s his style to tell it with truth, passion and a little bit of pizazz.

A new year can offer us the promise of many fanciful/different things, but often it’s simply an opportunity to refresh, whether it be our style or our story. 

Season 13 will continue to share the stories of creative people with a strong sense of style however this season I will turn the wheel to provide more offerings on how you can refresh your style and use it as a tool to share the story you want to tell.

In episode 2 of season 10, I chat with Myffy Rigby, Editor of newly launched Swill Magazine and former editor of the Good Food Guides & Time Out Sydney. With this cache of credentials, Myffy comes as a beacon of good taste and as a storyteller at heart not only articulates the lingo of food but confidently speaks to the language of fashion. Like any good story, Myffy’s foray into to the world captivates you from the onset and leaves you wanting for more. You’ll get adventure, wit, character development and originality as Myffy throws light onto the forces that shaped her style.

For the opening season of 2021, I bring together stories of hope and positive change and have partnered with innovative florist, Little Flowers, with the idea that flowers offer us a beauty that naturally gives joy and are a potent symbol of change and development.

Like Little Flowers, Season 4 of Style Stories aims to put more smiles on more faces, more often.

In episode 4 of season 13, I chat with Katie Kaars, professional Photographer and Camera Confidence Coach. With over 175,000 followers on Instagram, Katie knows how to be seen and heard. But growing up in a household where children were taught to be seen but not heard, Katie learnt from an early age  that creativity could serve as a powerful outlet for self-expression. And while her career found herself behind the lens of a camera, Katie’s style has always found a point of difference. One to enjoy a practical and pragmatic approach to both her work and her wardrobe, Katie has learnt to let go of rigidity and add more frivolity while always finding beauty in raw and authentic style. 

As I am currently in a Sydney lockdown and am reminded to be resilient, I am taking stock and sitting still while still seeking a bit of reprieve.

As pockets of the world start to open up, I want to offer a little escapism by travelling through the stories of people in other places and explore how they’re stepping out with a renewed sense of style.

So this is Style Stories: Stepping Out, a series which continues to share stories of creative people with a strong sense of style but from places that we’d love to see and where we’d rather be.

In episode 4 of season 7, I chat with Nikita Majajas, owner of Doodad and Fandango, the plastique fantastique jewel in the Australian wearable art crown. Nikita’s cult accessories label exudes the essence of camp, with witty quips and subversive icons perfectly placed in flamboyant forms adored by the most fanciful and fiercest of fashionistas. And while Doodad & Fandango may straddle the blurry lines between art, fashion and activism, it’s Nikita’s colourful sense of humour and kitsch sense of style that catches your eye and keeps you smiling.

If wearing your heart on your sleeve is understood as an act of intimate self-expression, then fashion and style may be the vehicle that signals the very heart of your story.  

Season 12 of Style Stories aims to honour stories with heart by featuring creatives with a strong sense of style who come with care, compassion and connection and candidly share their stories with an open heart.

In episode 9 of Style Stories: Stepping Out, I chat with Juliette Foxx, London-based fashion influencer and designer who is as famous for her pastel pink hair as she is for her vibrant content and character. While Juliette’s London upbringing may have tailored her style, it’s her birthplace of Cameroon that lies at the heart of her story. While she colours her influence with a generous joy for life and a celebration of individuality that honours her roots, it’s her determined attitude, hard work ethic and strong sense of pride that makes her stand out. And it’s this strength of character, combined with a serious talent and her heartfelt belief in herself, her family and her heritage that define Juliette’s style, ensuring her story will always earn her a seat at the table.

In episode six of season four I chat with mother-daughter duo, Alyssa-Jane Cook and Georgia-May Davis, affectionately known as AJ and GM respectively. Mother and daughter alike, these blonde bombshells have graced our tv screens to become beloved household names. AJ is known from almost every iconic Australian TV program a nineties teenager (ahem) could attest to watching, including A Country Practice, Home & Away, and E-Street. And while GM has taken a strong stride in her mother’s footsteps, appearing in Young Talent Time at the tender age of 15 and is about to dive into Netflix notoriety, it’s AJ’s mum they’ve both taken their style cues from, proving that style leaves a legacy. What’s more fitting for Mother’s Day than an interview with these two lovely ladies who celebrate a combined love of career, fashion and family. Whatever your relationship to this day is, I hope it’s an opportunity for you to celebrate any nurturing woman in your life and the legacies they leave behind.

In episode 4 of season 5 I chat with Alanna Taranto, fashion designer and founder of sustainable brand Selfe Studios. Alanna may have cut her teeth in the industry working for ethically esteemed Australian labels like Lee Mathews and Bassike but making good choices and doing the right thing is a style that’s thread through all Alanna does, including her designs. Her brand aesthetic reflects the ease of her Mediterranean heritage while celebrating an earnest modesty and understated elegance that tribute her family’s values. And as Selfe Studios grows, and Alanna’s confidence develops, it’s her honest, humble, hard-working maturity that have come to define her style and her sense of self.

The inspiration for Season 2 of Style Stories was born out of a desire to get out of the house, however, in choosing a location it was important to find a place that had style and charm but still felt like home. Naturally, I was beyond thrilled when the iconic restaurant Lucio’s generously invited me into their family-run business to film and record this series. Lucio’s is a personal family favourite for a few reasons, namely, it holds memories of a heavily pregnant me having my last long lunch just prior to giving birth to each of my children. Anyone who has had the pleasure of dining there can give testament to its innate style which pervades through its traditional culinary delights, the art-filled walls, and warmly felt family-run hospitality especially from the man himself Lucio Galletto. As an introduction to the series, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Lucio where he proudly speaks of his restaurant as a lifestyle. Today I’m chatting with Libby Babet, mum, author, speaker, presenter and owner of four businesses including her recently rebranded gym The Upbeat. As we come to the last episode of the Style at Home bonus series, I couldn’t think of anyone more fitting to conclude the series than Libby. Not only has she been able to embody the spirit of ‘keep calm and carry on’ through COVID she has done it with an upbeat enthusiasm and a smile on her face. While Libby sways from simple comforts to purpose drive performance wear it’s always her style to be active and bring her whole self to all that she does. She wears her heart on her sleeve and it’s her boundless energy, her ability to build a community and her desire to make everyone around her just a little bit happier that has kept me and so many others moving through this challenging time. In episode 8 of Style Stories: Stepping Out, I chat with Malene Malling, Danish publishing powerhouse and founder of Copenhagen fashion label La Bagatelle. At the tender age of 26, Malene saw herself as  Editor-in-Chief of Elle magazine and has since led the helm of several fashion titles including Costume and her own publication, Cover. Practically Danish royalty in the design and fashion circle, Malene is an authority on the Danish woman and how she dresses. Whether she’s talking about her style, La Bagatelle or Copenhagen Fashion Week the story is always one of respect, reverence and craftsmanship. And it’s this sense of responsibility to both community and environment harmonising with a point of privilege and a hard-working strength that underpin the story of Malene and Danish woman alike, ensuring their effortlessly chic style is tailored to stand out while always fitting in.
