04 Jun 2024 | Straight A Nursing Podcast Trailer | 00:03:49
In this show, Nurse Mo breaks down a wide range of nursing school concepts so they’re easy to understand. Each episode aims to help nursing students improve their study techniques, pass nursing school exams, and feel more confident in clinical. If you’re nervous about nursing school, not “getting it” in lecture, or feeling overwhelmed with all the information you have to learn, this podcast will help you optimize your study time so you can learn more with less stress.
While nursing school is challenging, it doesn’t have to be impossible. When concepts are explained in a way that “just makes sense”, nursing students have better recall on exams, feel more confident working with patients in clinical, and are better prepared for NCLEX.
Nurse Mo understands the struggles nursing students face and draws on more than 11 years of clinical experience to make nursing school less intimidating. Each episode removes the “fluff” and focuses on the key things a nursing student (and nurse) needs to know about a variety of disease conditions. The show also provides tips for succeeding in nursing school, guidance for students and new nurses, and insider information to help you excel at the bedside.

22 Feb 2024 | #334: Use the ABCs and Maslow to Prioritize Nursing Care | 00:25:57
Prioritizing patient care is often difficult for students in nursing school or even new nurses. And while novice nurses thrive when they utilize to-do lists, prioritization is so much more than making a task list and following it throughout your shift. It’s actually a constantly fluctuating component of your workflow that must take multiple factors (and multiple patients) into consideration.
The good news is, most of the time you can answer prioritization questions on nursing school exams and prioritize your nursing care at the bedside by following two key frameworks - the ABCs and Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.
Click play on this episode to learn how to work this into your practice and go through some scenarios designed to help you “think like a nurse!”

29 Feb 2024 | #335: Your Pacemaker Questions Answered | 00:52:28
When the heart rate is irregular or too slow, cardiac output is compromised. A pacemaker may be utilized to support the heart’s electrical system, stabilize arrhythmias, and ensure the heart pumps at a rate that supports tissue perfusion throughout the body.
A pacemaker may be indicated in patients with arrhythmias such as sick sinus syndrome (also known as sinus node dysfunction), symptomatic bradycardia, or high-grade heart blocks. Other indications include post myocardial infarction, heart failure, congenital heart defects, and temporarily after some cardiac surgeries.
This episode answers some key questions you have about pacemakers including:
What do all these terms mean? Capture? Sensing? Output?
What’s the difference between failure to sense and oversensing?
What is failure to capture?
What’s the difference between electrical capture and mechanical capture?
What are the different types of pacemakers?
What do the letters in the pacemaker settings mean?
What are some common pacing modes?
How do I troubleshoot common temporary pacemaker problems?
What is an ICD?
Hit play on this episode to learn some basics about pacemakers, so you can feel more confident caring for patients utilizing this very common device!

07 Mar 2024 | #336: The Dangers of Local Anesthetics | 00:23:07
Local anesthetics are medications that block nerve impulses so that pain signals aren’t transmitted to the brain. The result is that the anesthetized area is numb and pain is controlled.
Just because local anesthetics are “local” doesn’t mean systemic toxicity can’t occur. Local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) occurs when local anesthetics extend into the system at toxic levels. It most typically occurs due to the physician accidentally injecting the medication into the intravascular space. However, it can also be from locally administered overdose, which leads to systemic toxicity.
Hit play on this episode to dive into local anesthetic systemic toxicity so you can understand which of your patients are at highest risk and what to watch for!

26 Sep 2024 | #366: Preventing CAUTI Like a Pro | 00:40:43
In this episode, we delve into catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), a common hospital-acquired infection with serious implications. We’ll explore how these infections occur, their prevalence, risk factors, complications, and most importantly, strategies for prevention.
Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are one of the most commonly reported hospital-acquired conditions, and have a big impact on length of stay, cost, and mortality.
Length of stay - According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, a CAUTI increases length of stay by 2 to 4 days.
Cost - On average, the cost of treating a CAUTI can range from $900 to $14,000 per case which accounts for an estimated $340 to $450 million per year in the United States. Since most cases of CAUTI are preventable, Medicare and Medicaid do not reimburse hospitals for these costs.
Mortality - In critically ill patients, the mortality rate for CAUTI is 30%. It is estimated that more than 13,000 patients die each year due to CAUTI-related complications.
Listen to this episode to learn how you can play a huge role in preventing CAUTI in your patients!

07 Nov 2024 | #372: Recognizing Defense Mechanisms | 00:30:20
In this episode, we dive into one of the key aspects of mental health nursing: recognizing and understanding defense mechanisms. These psychological strategies, often unconscious, help individuals cope with reality and its stresses.
As nurses, it’s crucial to help patients gain self-awareness by identifying when these defense mechanisms are at play, which in turn can improve their understanding of their own behaviors. Recognizing when defense mechanisms are at play can prevent manipulation, foster greater insight, and lead to better outcomes for both nurse and patient.

19 Dec 2024 | #378: Nursing Care for Pulmonary Embolism | 00:29:56
A pulmonary embolism is a condition in which vessels in the lungs are blocked by a thrombus or other material that has traveled from somewhere else in the body. This is usually a result of a venous thromboembolism, but can also be due to amniotic fluid, air or fat embolus, or tumor material in patients with cancer.
A key thing to understand about pulmonary embolism is that the airway is not occluded. In pulmonary embolism, one or more blood vessels are occluded. What this means is that blood coming from the right side of the heart isn’t able to pass freely through the pulmonary vasculature to participate in gas exchange, which negatively affects perfusion.
In this episode you’ll learn:
Pulmonary embolism pathophysiology
Which of your patients are at highest risk for having a PE
Common signs and symptoms of PE
Priority nursing assessments
Tests utilized to evaluate or diagnose PE
Treatments for PE, including pharmacological and surgical
And more!
Hit play on this episode so you can understand how to recognize PE quickly so your patient can have their best chance at recovery.

Risk factors for MS
The four main types of MS
Common signs and symptoms of MS
Key nursing assessments for a patient with MS
The tests utilized to diagnose and evaluate a patient with MS

21 Dec 2023 | #322: Meds Used in Rapid Sequence Intubation | 00:20:37
RSI is rapid sequence intubation, a procedure performed to emergently intubate a patient with an intact gag reflex in cases of acute respiratory failure and/or cardiovascular collapse. As a nurse working in the emergency department or ICU, you will be obtaining and may be administering the medications used to perform a rapid sequence intubation. Please be aware of your scope of practice and facility protocol regarding the administration of these medications. In some cases, the medications can only be administered by a physician.
Which combination of medications the physician chooses will vary depending on a variety of factors including the patient’s condition and physician preference. A common combination is a sedative with a short-acting paralytic, though analgesics may also be utilized. This episode provides an overview of the medications commonly utilized for RSI:
Propofol
Succinylcholine
Rocuronium
Vecuronium
Etomidate
Ketamine
Fentanyl

20 Feb 2024 | #333: BONUS! How Cheating Causes Harm - A Conversation with ATI | 01:02:47
Even though nursing is THE most trusted profession, you may be surprised to learn that academic misconduct occurs at the same rate amongst nursing students as it does other academic disciplines. One reason for this is that cheating goes beyond just getting “extra help” on an exam, and students may not recognize other aspects of academic dishonesty as actual cheating.
The reason cheating is such a big deal in nursing school is that it’s not just the student who suffers. Ultimately, patient safety is at stake.
In this special bonus episode brought to you by ATI, we’re exploring the concept of academic integrity, what counts as “cheating” and how both the student (and their future patients) are put at risk.
A big thank you to our sponsor, ATI! ATI is a leader in nursing education, dedicated to empowering nursing students and educators with innovative solutions for success on exams and in their careers. From the ATI TEAS to comprehensive NCLEX preparation and ongoing professional development, ATI Nursing offers the resources and support needed to excel in the ever-evolving healthcare environment.
