24 Feb 2022Cover Songs: How to Stand Out While Showcasing Your Own Talent with Brian Hollenbeck00:43:19

Send Steve a Text Message

Singing popular cover songs can be a lot of fun; it's a fantastic way to get your audience's attention while also allowing you to show off your talent and personalize the song.

In today's episode, we are joined by Brian Hollenbeck, also known as Brian HBK. He is a member of Hairball, a band that covers songs on another whole level and his position is bass/vocals. It’s safe to say HBK was bitten by the music bug at a very early age. His home growing up was filled with music.

Many hours were spent lying on the living room floor in front of the stereo speakers playing records by people like Three Dog Night, The Beatles, Foreigner, and many others. His uncle played him KISS Alive II, then he heard Led Zeppelin and that was it…there was no turning back. He dreamed of getting to play and sing in front of people. He joined his first bar band at the age of 15 and has had the privilege of playing on different stages across North America ever since.

Tune in to this podcast now and learn how to cover songs without losing your own trait as an artist.

Send Steve a Text Message

“When you start making a full song, it opens a lot of mysteries that you want to figure out.” - Mika Tyyskä

To be a professional composer, one must have years of training, experience, and a fundamental understanding of music theory. This isn't to say that you can't learn to be a good composer without putting in tens of thousands of hours of work. Anyone can learn to make music, but how far you go depends on your objectives. While some people may compose music without understanding all of the subtleties of the profession, you'll go a lot further if you grasp a few essential abilities.

Want to know the good news? This podcast is made for you!

Our latest guest for today’s episode is Mika Tyyskä. He talks about what he does when he starts composing and you can get some good advice from him! In his book; drama, atmosphere, feeling, and storytelling are the most important aspects of music. In addition to making music, he loves to share and teach what he learned along the way.

Tune in to this episode and learn how to develop your skill and ability as a composer!

19 Jan 2023How to Solo Using the CAGED System with Steve Stine00:13:59

Send Steve a Text Message

The CAGED System uses the five shapes of open-position chords—C, A, G, E and D—to make all other barre chords. The system allows for twelve major chords and their variations to be played in up to five different positions on the neck, using only these five shapes.

The CAGED System is not limited to chords. It can also be used to play major scales in any position, using five different patterns.

Learning each scale position is a good way to learn how to solo because it breaks down the neck into chunks rather than mapping out the entire scale.

In today’s episode of Steve Stine Guitar Podcasts, Steve discusses how to play solos by visualizing chords and melodies on the fretboard. He also encourages students to learn theory and practice techniques so they can improve their improvisation skills.

In today’s episode of Steve Stine Guitar Podcasts, Steve shows how to play arpeggios and do it solo. He also specifies that visualizing arpeggio will make it easier for you to play it.

That's the question we unpack as I share my personal experiences and tips on balancing authenticity with innovation on the guitar. We traverse the landscape of music learning, discussing the golden days of ear-learning before the internet era, and how those practices shaped musicians into the artists they are today. Say goodbye to that crutch and hello to 'clearing'—my unique method for memorizing songs that will deepen your musical connection and free you from the page. 23 May 2024Finding Your Unique Sound: The Balance Between Note-For-Note and Personal Expression in Learning Songs00:09:47

Send Steve a Text Message

Have you ever wondered if music should be played precisely as it's written, or if there's room for a personal twist? As we explore the creative dynamics of performing music, this episode promises to reveal whether true artistry lies in replication or reinvention. Through stories of how legends like Jimmy Page and Randy Rhoads often varied their live performances, we showcase that music, by its nature, is an ever-evolving canvas. Particularly focusing on the art of positional playing, exemplified by the classic "Paranoid" by Black Sabbath, we share how finding comfort on the fretboard can outweigh the importance of duplicating the original note for note. It's a journey into recognizing that while precision has its place, the soul of music thrives in the spaces where personal interpretation dances with the notes.

Embrace the notion that your musical journey should be as unique as your fingerprint. This episode pivots to the significance of infusing your own style into performances, whether you're serenading your walls at home, recording covers, or grooving with a band. Highlighting the evolutionary playstyles of guitar greats like Randy Rhoads and Joe Satriani, we discuss the value of your individual technique shaping your approach to music. Here, you will find encouragement to carve out your own path in learning and performing, to not get ensnared by the need for perfect replication, especially when collaboration comes into play. Listen in for an eye-opening conversation that champions musical individuality and empowers you to prioritize personal expression in every chord and melody.

15 Aug 2024Adapting Guitar Solos to Your Playing Style: Tips from Steve Stine00:18:28

Send Steve a Text Message

Hey there, Steve Stine here. In this episode of my guitar podcast, I wanted to share with you my approach to learning challenging guitar solos, using the example of "Warheads" by Extreme. As a guitarist, I know how frustrating it can be to tackle a difficult solo, especially when you're trying to stay true to the original while still making it your own.

Throughout this episode, I break down my process for learning solos, from the initial listening stage to figuring out the notes and adapting the techniques to suit my own playing style. I emphasize the importance of finding a way to execute the solo that feels comfortable and natural to you, rather than trying to copy the original artist note-for-note.

Using specific examples from the "Warheads" solo, I demonstrate how I modified certain licks and phrases to better fit my own playing, while still maintaining the essence of the original. I also discuss the realities of playing live and how that can influence the way you choose to play a solo.

My goal with this episode is to encourage you to approach learning solos in a way that works for you, and to remind you that it's okay to make modifications and adaptations to suit your own style. Remember, you're not trying to be someone else – you're always going to be you, and that's what makes your playing unique.

14 Nov 2024Mastering Guitar Improvisation: 5 Steps for Fluid and Creative Soloing00:19:47

Send Steve a Text Message

Welcome to the Steve Stine Podcast! In today's episode, we'll be diving into "5 Steps to Fluid Improvisation." If you're looking to improve the fluidity of your guitar playing, whether you're a newbie or a seasoned player, this episode is packed with practical insights. Steve will take us through essential steps to get started, from creating the right backing track to build your practice on, to finding the perfect guitar tone that motivates you.

We'll explore concepts like improving your travel capacity across the fretboard, mastering rhythmic phrasing to create dynamic sentences, using repetition creatively, integrating sequences for added flair, and finally, making melodic connections to give your improvisation purpose. By the end of this episode, you'll have a solid framework to make your improvisation sound and feel more natural. So grab your guitar, and let's get started!

1. Travel Capacity - Navigating the Space: Imagine your home is like the fretboard of your guitar. Travel capacity is like knowing where the kitchen, living room, and bathroom are. If you're hosting a party, you need to comfortably move between spaces. In the same way, you need to move across the fretboard with ease and confidence, hitting key areas like scales and notes.

2. Rhythmic Phrasing - Conversational Flow: Think of this as the art of conversation at your party. You don't monologue the entire time (hopefully!). Instead, you have pauses and moments of listening. You might tell a story (a musical phrase), pause for reactions (holding or pausing on a note), and ask questions (creating dynamic contrast). It keeps the dialogue engaging, just as varying rhythm keeps your improvisation flowing.

3. Repetition - Creating Familiarity: Every good party has a few repeating elements—maybe a signature drink or a favorite playlist that cycles back. Repetition in your music, like riffs or motifs, creates something familiar that listeners can latch onto. It’s like giving your guests those recurring moments they’ll remember and look forward to.

4. Sequences - Patterns and Recipes: A well-run dinner party often has a sequence of events: appetizers, main course, dessert. Similarly, sequences in music are patterns that bring structure to your improvisation, adding a sense of progression and sophistication—like moving from one tasty dish to another.

5. Melodic Connection - The Signature Dish: Finally, your party might be known for a signature dish that everyone talks about. This is the melodic connection in your improvisation, the “E” note or theme you keep coming back to. It ties everything together and gives your improv a consistent flavor that makes it memorable

20 Mar 2025Why Are You Still Playing Slow? The Mindset of Speed Picking Part 100:40:44

Send Steve a Text Message

The pursuit of lightning-fast guitar playing often leads down a path filled with frustration and plateaus. What if the secret isn't in how fast you can move your fingers, but in understanding the subtle mechanics that make true speed possible?

In this deep-dive exploration of speed picking, we shatter common misconceptions about developing velocity on the guitar. The truth? You're only as fast as your slowest element. Whether it's finger strength limitations, pick angle issues, or string-crossing challenges, these hidden bottlenecks are what prevent most guitarists from achieving their speed goals.

The psychological dimension of practice is equally critical. Some days will feel amazing while others feel like regression—a reality every guitarist must embrace rather than fight against. We provide a framework for maintaining consistency through both types of days, separating maintenance-level practice from advancement-focused training.

Beyond theory, we explore practical concepts like "getting your ya-ya's out" through raw practice, the critical importance of tremolo picking development, and why three-note-per-string patterns have become the gold standard for speed development. These spread fingerings create symmetrical patterns that allow both hands to find synchronicity at higher tempos than traditional scale positions permit.

Perhaps most valuable is our exploration of the subtle technical nuances—pick depth, pick weight, hand positioning, and guitar setup—that transform good technique into exceptional speed. These seemingly small details often make the difference between hitting a wall and breaking through to new levels of playing.

Ready to transform your approach to speed? This episode provides the roadmap that will change not just how you practice, but how you think about the mechanics of fast playing forever.

Be sure to watch for the video on the GuitarZoom YouTube channel to see these examples in action!!!

27 Mar 2025Why Are You Still Playing Slow? The Mindset of Speed Picking Part 200:26:01

Send Steve a Text Message

Speed picking remains one of the most coveted guitar techniques, yet so many players approach it backward—focusing purely on velocity rather than developing the proper mechanical foundation that allows speed to emerge naturally.

This comprehensive lesson breaks down the often-overlooked fundamentals of efficient, clean guitar speed. We start with a simple three-note-per-string pattern, analyzing how proper picking technique creates a natural flow between strings using alternate picking. The crucial insight lies not in how fast you can move, but in how relaxed and efficient your movements become.

You'll discover how physical anchoring techniques dramatically impact your picking stability, why certain finger combinations (like 1-3-4) present unique challenges compared to others, and how to systematically build speed using both metronome work and the powerful "bursting" technique used by virtuosos like Yngwie Malmsteen.

What separates this approach from cookie-cutter speed exercises is the emphasis on self-awareness during practice. Rather than mindlessly racing up and down scales, you'll learn to identify your specific limitations, address them methodically, and accept that progress often comes in plateaus followed by breakthroughs. The honest truth? Sometimes you'll sit at the same tempo for weeks before making a leap forward—and that's completely normal.

Whether you're struggling with tension issues, inconsistent picking, or simply hitting a speed wall, these techniques provide both the physical framework and mental approach needed to transform your playing. Ready to discover what your hands are truly capable of?
