02 Feb 2021The Problem with Porridge for Breakfast with Debbie Lewis MSW, PGDipNT, BANT, IFMCP00:34:19

Welcome to series 6 of STATE OF MIND with Nutritional Therapist, Grace Kingswell

---

Today I’m thrilled to re-introduce Debbie Lewis to the podcast, a great friend and mentor of mine and one of a select few Institute for Functional Medicine registered practitioners here in the UK.

Debbie’s here to talk about porridge and why it’s not the best breakfast option out there, no matter how beautiful it looks on Instagram.

The reason this episode came about is because I took to Insta recently to share my experience with having porridge for breakfast a few weeks ago. Usually I stick to eggs and veg - a lovely protein rich breakfast - but for some reason or another I decided to have porridge one morning and felt so sluggish, tired and headachey afterwards. I pretty much broke my Instagram DMs after posting about this so I thought I’d delve into the topic further with Debbie’s help.

I’ve also just published an eBook called Eggs and Veg which has a lot of info on blood sugar and the importance of maintaining steady levels plus lots of delicious protein based breakfast ideas to keep you inspired. It’s just £10.99 and downloadable via my website gracekingswell.com

Please share this podcast with your mates and leave a review on the Apple podcast app if you can - so that I can keep growing and producing podcasts for you all!

05 May 2020ARE YOU COPING? Deyá Ward: Palm oil and barefoot living 00:37:48

In this episode of 'Are You Coping?' a subsection of my main podcast, STATE OF MIND, I'm talking to Deyá Ward - an Orangutan specialist, researcher, contributor to Seven Worlds One Planet and a fellow cold water swimmer.

Deyá has some lovely tales of lockdown life and how her newly found love for spending all her days barefoot has gone someway to replacing the connection she gets from a cold water swim, something she's not been able to do much of at the moment.

If you enjoy the episode then I would be so grateful if you would support me on Patreon!

The link is in my instagram bio to become a subscriber and in exchange you'll get SO much health content, live Q&A chats with me, breathwork videos and recipes - all for the price of a couple of coffees a month. ⁣

21 Apr 2020ARE YOU COPING: Serena Louth on piña coladas and penknives00:23:16

Welcome back to another episode of the Lockdown series 'ARE YOU COPING?'

'ARE YOU COPING?' is a miniseries, a sub-section if you will, of STATE OF MIND (my main Pod).

In this mini series I'm asking my guest the same few questions on things they're learned about themselves since Locky D, what meals and recipes they're living for, how their daily routines have changed etc.

It's fun, it's lighthearted and it's designed to lift the spirits with lots of laughs!

Today's guest is the wonderful Serena Louth, reflexologist, Holistic Wellness Coach and Reiki Practitioner. She's also a foodie, podcast host and all round dreamboat. We giggled so much in this episode and Serena decided that if she were marooned on a desert island she's need a penknife so she could make piña coladas. Ever the practical one!

If you enjoy then please PLEASE do rate, review and subscribe! It will make my day =)

20 Apr 2021Why We Need To Keep Farming Animals with Peter Greig00:41:48

Welcome back to STATE OF MIND podcast hosted by Nutritional Therapist, Grace Kingswell.

In this episode we're taking a look at the true meaning of regenerative agriculture, why 'grass fed' isn't always what you think, and how vegans have a vital role to play in the future of farming (believe it or not!)

We also talk about how feeding animal grain (such as in organic meat) is really bad for the animal, the soil health, the planet and the environment.

This is a NOT TO BE MISSED episode - totally amazing.

Peter Greig is the founder of Piper's Farm, a small family farm near Exeter in Devon. He tells us how his Dad pioneered battery farming chickens in this country, and how after getting down on his hands and keens in the hen houses that he and his wife made the decision to never, ever farm that way.

I wanted to put something out in times of Corona to help, inspire, encourage and support you all during Lockdown. The goal is laughs, comfort, comment and insight - and I hope it helps you.

Cat Sarsfield is a writer and works for a content and tone of voice agency in London. She's a serious foodie and has an epic newsletter called 'Since No One Asked,' in which she shares witty, pertinent and tantalisingly millennial food tips and advice, recipe and shopping lists with her hundreds of subscribers.

16 Mar 2020Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine00:45:58

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND, I’m Grace Kingswell and I’m a Nutritional Therapist, cold water swimmer, Auricular Acupuncturist and Breathwork coach, and this is my podcast series all about health, nutrition, lifestyle medicine, sustainability and so much more.

Today I’m talking to Siwan Quinn Bratton, BSc(Hons), Lic.Ac., CMIR, BSS-Do (T) and Jonathan Tarr (Lic.Ac., CMIR, DCHAc., BSS-Do (T), the husband and wife duo behind the helm of the prestigious College of Auricular Acupuncture. I recently studied with them to become an auricular acupuncturist and I thought it would be an amazing opportunity to get them on the podcast to talk about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and how Eastern forms of medicine can be so useful and vital in our Western world.

We discuss what meridians are, how the Chinese 5 Elements work, whether you can really tell what’s going on in someone’s body just by looking at their ear and how the renowned battlefield acupuncture protocol for pain works.

As ever, if you enjoy this episode I would be beyond grateful if you could help me to spread the word about state of mind by sharing the episode to your Instagram stories and writing me a rave review on the apple podcasts app.

14 Jun 2022How To Prepare for a Successful Pregnancy with Sandra Greenbank01:02:42

Hello and welcome back, finally, to the podcast. I’m so sorry it’s been so long!

Today I have the wonderful Sandra Greenbank on to talk about fertility. As you will hear, Sandra is incredibly well-respected in this field and her main role these days is to train other Nutritional Therapists, myself included, to be specialists in fertility nutrition as well as seeing her 1-on-1 clients.

In this episode we cover diet, of course, but also fertility testing (eg vaginal swabs, DNA fragmentation and other things you might consider with your nutritional therapist if you are undergoing any fertility treatment), plus PCOS and how that affects pregnancy outcomes, male factor infertility - actually we spend a long time discussing how to boost sperm health, toxicity and its effect on fertility status and much more.

There may be some topics in here that you might find sensitive, such as miscarriage, so please bear that in mind.

24 Nov 2020From Surfing to Sepsis: Real Talk with Laura Crane00:46:06

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND, a podcast hosted by Nutritional Therapist, Grace Kingswell that spans everything form bio hacks to women's health, sex, relationships, health and nutrition.

Today's guest is Laura Crane, ex-professional surfer, mental health campaigner and all round amazing human. Laura came to crazy amounts of fame when she entered the Love Island villa, which we talk about at the start of this episode, but before that she was making serious waves in the surf scene as a sponsored athlete.

The overriding reason that I wanted to chat to her though was because I saw her put up an insta story about an operation she's just had to clear up an ovarian cyst which brought on severe sepsis and left her in A&E fighting off an infection that's changed her life forever.

This episode is sponsored by Davy J water wear and I'm thrilled to be able to introduce you to the brand!

Davy J are an awesome small sustainable brand based in Devon who design swimwear for women who love the ocean and they celebrate and encourage everyone to explore the joy that water can bring – all year round. 31 Aug 2022Thyroid Health with Tanya Borowski00:59:05

Hello and welcome back to State of Mind, with me Grace Kingswell.

Today’s episode is on thyroid health and my guest is the sensational Tanya Borowski. Tanya is a Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner and her list of accolades and qualifications is as long as my arm when it comes to health, nutrition and in particular thyroid health. She’s completed advanced Hashimotos and thyroid training with the world renowned Dar Datis Kharrazian (who let’s be honest, if you’re a Nutritional Therapist you probably have a knowledge crush on - I certainly do), and is honestly the best person I could think of to come on the podcast and talk about thyroid health with. I am so grateful to her for joining me as a guest!

Tanya has a way of making the complicated understandable, and we’ve endeavoured to condense a hugely complex topic into an episode that you’ll likely want to come back to time and time again.

In particular we cover what the thyroid gland is, why it’s so crucial for optimum health across ALL body systems, what nutrients it needs from diet to work well, what signs and symptoms to look out for with an under active or over active situation, autoimmunity of the thyroid (Hashimotos and graves disease in particular) and why it’s so common and SO much more.

Go find Tanya @tanyabrowski (I’m obsessed with her instagram) and please leave a 5 star review on the apple podcasts app or wherever you listen to your podcasts!

Today I’m talking to Karen O'Donoghue, founder of The Happy Tummy Co, and her journey from chronic IBS and PMS to none of the above, by way of a high fibre diet, her magic poo bread and an intense exploration into truly healthy baking. I learnt a lot in this episode and it was such a joy to chat to Karen.

And on the topic of gut health, I’m beyond grateful to have Ki Kefir sponsoring this episode again. Have you tried their kefir yet? If not, you must! I regularly put kefir on the supplement plans for my gut-focus clients and see huge improvements in histamine symptoms, IBS, energy and wellbeing generally.

I was really keen to hear how Rachel’s small surf club has grown into a global brand, most recently collaborating with H&M on a wetsuit and swimwear collection, growing a huge instagram following and inspiring hundreds of women around the world to join her girl gand and get in the water.

19 Jan 2021Air lifted out of the Arctic: why humans love adversity with adventurer Anna Blackwell00:42:02

Hello and welcome back to STAE OF MIND with Nutritional Therapist, Grace Kingswell.

My guest today is Anna Blackwell. Anna is an adventurer, which I feel like is one of those things you decide to be when you’re a child but that realistically you never end up being. As Anna explains in the episode, she never had grand ideas from an early age to be an adventurer, she sort of fell into it and realised that the physical endurance and mental resilience needed to put yourself through gruelling experiences was something she really enjoyed.

I was personally really intrigued to find out what she eats on long expeditions, and I was quite horrified at one of the answers, and what it’s like not seeing another human for days on end.

Whether you’re into hiking and adventure or not, this episode is an enlightening exploration into the human psyche and what it is about some of us that makes us enjoy and seek out adversity.

I also want to apologise now for one instance in this episode where, due to the zoom connection being a bit slow, I basically interrupt Anna multiple times - podcasting long distance via Zoom is hard, so I hope you can forgive me on that one!

I also mention a trek I did in New Zealand and couldn’t remember the name at the time, it’s called The Banks Peninsula and it was some of the best, and hardest, days of my life!

This episode is sponsored by Davy J Waterwear, sustainable swimwear for women made in Devon. Davy Js are giving listeners of this podcast 10% off with the code STATEOFMIND.

17 Feb 2020Lysander Bickham: The 16 year old CEO00:37:42

My guest for today's episode is the amazing 16 year old entrepreneur Lysander Bickham. Lysander is the founder of Leo’s Box - and eco friendly subscription box that’s filled with either home or beauty products and is delivered monthly to your door.

Concerned with the plight of our planet, Lysander decided to start a business that offers a more sustainable choice to consumers. I was lucky enough to try one of the beauty boxes and had some lovely natural soaps, a biodegradable sponge, natural coconut oil make-up remover and some natural deodorant.

I think it’s amazing that Lysander has taken something he’s really concerned about and turned it into a business at the tender age of 16. In this episode we talk a lot about why he’s done it, his concerns for the future, the school system and sustainability and how he naively thought that starting a business would be easy.

He chooses what products go into his subscription boxes extremely carefully and if you’re at all interested in giving one a go then please do check out leosbox.co.uk

13 Jan 2020Tony Riddle: The ECO system, not the EGO system01:02:42

Tony Riddle, or the Natural Lifestylist as he goes by on Instagram, is a man on a mission to re-wild your feet and lifestyle and connect us humans back to our true essence, to empower us to take control of our environments and to get back into nature in a BIG way. At the tail end of last year he ran from Land's End to John O'Groats barefoot, as you do, in a bid to raise awareness for environmental charities - and he certainly achieved that goal. It was also an exercise in showing us all just what the human body is capable of and, probably more so actually, what the mind is capable of.

We talk a lot in this episode about the way in which Tony raises his children, the fact that he doesn’t send them to a conventional school, and we of course talk about his epic run, our mutual love for cold water and a few other insightful anecdotes along the way.

09 Mar 2021Why Soil Health = Human Health00:42:43

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND with me, Grace Kingswell.

Today my guest is Abby Rose of Farmerama Radio and Vidacycle. Abby is an independent, influential female voice within the regenerative farming world, and in particular she’s really clued up on the role of soil in determining the future of our health from what we put in our bodies, to building resilience against extreme weather and climate change.

Abby is actually a physicist by trade, but comes from a farming family and about 5 years ago started getting really into soil health and its impact on our planet. In this episode we chat about how our gut microbiome is very similar to the soil microbiome, and how the two are connected, the difference between grass and grain fed, the way plants connect with each other via their amazing network under the ground and thankfully we end on a positive note about our role as human’s in the future of the planet.

This episode is sponsored by Exhale coffee, coffee that’s free from mycotoxins, heavy metals and pesticides. If you would like toast up a coffee delivery subscription just head over to their website and use the code GRACE40 which will give you 40% off the first bag in your subscription plus free delivery. 16 Sep 2021How ‘Intuitive‘ is Intuitive Eating with Jade Leighton00:53:25

Hello and welcome back to Series 7 of STATE OF MIND podcast with your host, Nutritional Therapist @gracekingswell

We’re going to be kicking things off today with an episode on Intuitive Eating, but coming up over the next few weeks we have an interview with Dr Jenny Goodman, author of the incredibly book, Staying Alive In Toxic Times, fertility nutrition, histamine intolerance and iron metabolism, the vaginal microbiome and so on and so forth.

As ever if you enjoy this podcast PLEASE share it around and if you’re new here then there’s 6 series of State of Mind that you can go back and catch up with!

So, onto today’s topic of Intuitive eating and my guest this week is Jade Leighton. Aside from being one of my oldest friends, Jade is also a Nutritional Therapist with so much knowledge to share with you all.

This chat is completely unedited and my goodness do we cover a lot of ground. We delve not only into the principles behind intuitive eating (and our very much uncensored opinions around that), but also candida, blood sugar, gut health and more.

I’d like to warm you though, that some of the content may be triggering for those dealing with a difficult relationship with food. One of the best uses of intuitive eating is in recovery from an eating disorder, and we do cover this in the podcast.

20 Jan 2020Cait Mizzi: The pitfalls of a vegan diet, Game Changers, and why Keto is not a fad00:55:01

Cait Mizzi CNP is a Certified Nutritional Practitioner and she works functionally, which is a term you may have heard me throw around a lot on this podcast before. Essentially, she works with an evidence-based, yet natural approach to obtaining and maintaining good health. Instead of focusing on a singular system or body part, or even a single approach or cure, Cait will evaluate your complete health history, current lifestyle, emotional state and dietary habits to get to the root cause of your health concerns. As you’ll hear from this episode, Cait is an incredibly knowledgeable practitioner and we do go quite in depth on a number of topics like veganism and the ketogenic diet.

One thing we do talk a lot about in this episode is vegan diets and the Game Changers film, and if you watched that film and immediately reevaluated the way you eat then I urge you to listen through to the end of this episode because it’s incredibly important.

As ever, if you enjoy this episode I would be beyond grateful if you could help me to spread the word about state of mind by sharing the episode to your instagram stories and writing me a rave review on the apple podcasts app.

29 Dec 2020Curiosity, Communication and Lube: lessons from a psychosexual therapist with Kate Moyle00:58:01

Hello and welcome back to state of mind with me, Grace Kingswell.

Today’s guest is psychosexual and relationship therapist Kate Moyle. Kate works with people to recognise their own personal understanding of their sexuality and sexual health; with the view that issues have roots in psychology, emotion, the physical body, and a person’s history and culture. Ultimately her aim is to help people get to a place of sexual health, happiness and wellbeing.

In this episode we discuss sex tech, porn, libido and fertility among many other topics. It’s a fascinating lesson and my thanks goes out to Kate for taking the time to educate us all with her wisdom on what is a very important topic.

Kate is on instagram @katemoyletherapy and she host her own podcast too called The Sexual Wellness session.

09 Feb 2021The problem with plant milks, with Cait Mizzi CFNP00:42:40

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND with me, Grace Kingswell.

Today I’m taking to Cait Mizzi about polyunsaturated seed oils and the omega 3 to 6 ratio. Cait put a story up on her instagram recently about rapeseed oil, soybean oil, cottonseed oil and all these other oils that we see in pretty much every single product we buy these days, and spoke about how detrimental they are for our health. As I’d been wanting to do an episode on fats for quite some time I jumped at the opportunity to interview Cait again for STATE OF MIND.

I bet you didn’t think your Oatly flat white was causing significant inflammation in your body right? Or that the fats it contains are akin to those you’d fine in a plate of fries?

The information in this episode needs to be heard, so I urge you to share it with your friends and loved ones - let’s get this message out there! It’ snot mainstream yet, but it should be!

Oh and don’t forget to get my new eBook from my website! All about why your porridge breakfast might be the cause of your energy lows, hormonal imbalances and mood fluctuations. It’s just £10.99 and has loads of delicious protein breakfast recipes in too!

21 Apr 2023Fertility and the Gut Microbiome with Natasha Evans00:54:27

Hello and welcome back to state of mind with me, Grace Kingswell. For those of you that are new to the pod - hello hi, I’m Grace, a Nutritional Therapist and new Mum! Hence, this is the first episode I’ve released in a while because time is limited these days with a nearly 9-month old in tow. Today I’m chatting to one of my great friends and colleagues, Natasha Evans. Tash is a Nutritional Therapist specialising in fertility and gut health, and this episode focuses on the relationship between the two - I.e. how all of our different microbiome systems in our bodies influence our fertility outcomes. It’s a really fascinating listen. Tash has also just launched her Fertility 360 method - 9 steps to 9 months, which she tells us all about in this episode. I highly recommend working with Tash if you’re trying to conceive, or if you want to work on your gut health…or ideally (because they’re so connected), both! You can fine Tash on instagram @nenutrition or get in touch via her website nenutrition.co.uk

14 Sep 2022Everything You Need to Know About PROTEIN with Jade Leighton00:48:51

Hello and welcome back to State of Mind with me, Grace Kingswell.

This is the last episode in the 5 episode mini series I’ve been running pre-baby, and actually by the time it airs I will probably already have that baby - eek! The podcast will be taking a little break whilst I adjust to motherhood, but I will be back with more episodes in the future! I’d love to know if there are any topic Is haven’t covered that you’d like me to look into, or guests that you’d like to hear on the pod - so do get in touch with me via instagram!

So today I’ve got Jade Leighton back on the pod to talk about protein. The idea came to us because we’re constantly astounded by the lack of protein on people’s plates that we see on Instagram, and once we’d decided to do this episode I couldn’t actually believe that I haven’t covered it before, as it’s just so basic and SO essential.

In this episode we cover what protein is, why we need it, whether all protein is created equally, how much you should consume per day, types of protein powders, how to combine plant protein sources, and how to get kids eating more protein too. We cover a LOT, as ever, but it’s such a fab episode and absolutely VITAL listening for everyone.

I think you’ll enjoy this one! As ever, if you do, please go ahead and leave a 5 star review on the apple podcasts app. Jade cna be found, if you don’t know already, @_jadeleighton on instagram

27 Jan 2020Ftoxins: Why our cosmetics are killing us with Ariane Chui00:50:11

Today I’m talking to the wonderful Ariane from Ftoxins, a polite abbreviation for something we should all be doing - putting our middle fingers up at the sources of toxicity in our lives.

One of these main sources is in our cosmetic products, and that’s what Ariane and her sister Delphine focus on with their blog and Instagram page, but they are also incredibly knowledgeable about the dangers surrounding EMFs (as emitted by our electronic devices), air quality, supplements and materials we commonly use in our kitchens like aluminium and plastic.

The girls provide safer swaps for their followers which is, I think, why they are so successful at what they do. They aren’t just explaining what the chemicals in your kitchen cleanser do they’re giving you a healthier alternative that’s priced similarly and easy to use.

I absolutely love the concept behind Ftoxins and in this episode we talk a lot about cosmetics, moisturisers, what you should and can use on your skin safely and why it’s so important not to rub petroleum all over your body!! Yes, most moisturisers are made from petroleum which comes form petrol.

As ever if you enjoy this episode then you can support me and my little podcast by sharing it to your instagram stories and also by leaving a rave review on the apple podcasts app! Thank you in advance…

25 Jul 2023The Mama-Baby Microbiome with Kate Pope01:06:59

Hello and welcome back to State of Mind, with me Grace Kingswell

Today my guest is the amazing Kate Pope. Kate is a Nutritional Therapist, GAPS practitioner and the founder of Regenerative Cooking School and Mama Baby Biome, the online course that teaches you to reconnect with your local and ancestral food systems in order to heal and support your baby through conditions such as eczema, leaky gut, allergies and intolerances, and teaches you how to introduce solids, how to prepare and prioritise the most nutrient dense foods for you and your family.

I came across Kate when I most needed her, I was feeling exhausted and lacking direction with my son’s health, and I knew I could be doing better for him regarding what he was eating - and this coming from a Nutritional Therapist! Sometimes as Mums, we’re so exhausted by it all it’s hard to do the things you know you need to - so I signed up to Kate’s course and haven’t looked back.

In this episode we talk about our birth stories, healing from trauma, preparing your body for birth, pregnancy and the post party period, what to do if your baby was born via c-section and how to help their microbiome recover and establish, the difference between meat stock and bone broth, first foods for babies and so much more.

It’s also the first time both myself and my guest have cried recording an episode. This is such a vital listen for any parent that wants to do the best for their child. Thank you to Kate and the amazing work she does.

Go check her out on instagram @wildnutritionist

Hello and welcome back to State of mind with me, Grace Kingswell. I’m really excited about today’s episode because as soon as I had finished recording it I just KNEW that it was going to help so many of you.

My guest today is Debbie Cotton from InVivo Healthcare. Debbie is Naturopath and a vaginal microbiome expert. InVivo are my favourite supplement and testing company and their range of targeted nutraceuticals is superb and they have some of the niftiest tests on the market, the vaginal microbiome test for one!

I put the question to you lovely lot on social media of ‘what do you want to know about the vaginal microbiome?’ And got so many responses about thrush, UTIs, BV, fertility, contraception, diet and so much more. So that’s what we cover in this episode. It’s ESSENTIAL listening for anyone with a vagina.

Before we kick off, I just want to thank Ki Kefir again for sponsoring this episode, and again, it’s really fitting as as you’ll hear from Debbie eating to support your gut microbiome has a knock on effect on the vaginal microbiome too.

Ki make their kefir from milk farmed on regenerative pastures, and they ferment it the traditional way (don’t assume that the kefir you buy in the supermarket will have ANY of the same amazing properties). Kefir is full of natural probiotics that support our gut health.

To try Ki Kefir’s truly exceptional health drink just go to the website and use the code: SOM15  at the checkout to get 15% off your first order and start the journey to optimal health and support a company with a relentless passion for people and planet!

12 May 2020ARE YOU COPING? Lucy Burke: Jewellery Designer and #WFH Veteran 00:37:39

Welcome back to "Are You Coping?" a mini series consisting of 5 short episodes with 5 awesome guests about life in lockdown. The aim of the series is to provide you with lols, inspiration and escapism - and today's guest is no different!

Lucy Burke, of super trendy jewellery company Margot & Mila, is a jewellery designer and maker recently relocated from London to Frome in Somerset.

In this episode we chat about how Lucy got into making jewellery, what it's been like making the leap out of London, how lockdown has affected her family and the food she can't cope with at the moment (it's REALLY not what you think!)

Lucy's jewellery is amazing, in fact, she helped me redesign my engagement ring and I'm never without some Margot & Mila hoops in my ears.

06 Oct 2021Histamine Intolerance with Matt Jarosy00:42:08

Hello and welcome back to State of Mind with me, Grace Kingswell. Today I’m diving into the topic of histamine with Nutritional Therapist, Matt Jarosy. You might have only heard fo histamine in relation to anti-histamines, typically taken for hay fever. But histamine is an important neurotransmitter, and can play a part in pretty much any reaction in the body form the obvious itchy, scratchy scenario, to brain fog and fatigue. We’re going to break it all down for you today and I hope you find it really fascinating.

In the episode matt talks about a past client of his who’s hay fever symptoms he managed to reduce by about 50% just with the inclusion of some kefir, which brings me on to the sponsor fo this episode -Ki Kefir.

Ki Kefir lives by the philosophy that food is medicine and so created the most authentic, traditional and above all most nutritious kefir available on the market today. The probiotic powerhouse that is kefir is not quite a staple in everyone's fridge (just yet!). Two amazing producers from Sussex are trying to change that.

Kefir is fermented milk that’s naturally abundant in probiotic bacteria that supports and nourishes our microbiome. This in turn has a hugely positive knock on effect for our systemic health.

They produce this kefir with the finest milk made from cows feeding on organic & regenerative pastures only, this ensures the tastiest, nutritionally dense probiotic that money can buy. Ki are on a mission to create a drink company that truly honours what it means to be healing to the planet and people. These guys are the real deal! Their packaging is also 100% recyclable and bottled in glass.

To try Ki Kefir’s truly exceptional health drink just go to the website and use the code: SOM15  at the checkout to get 15% off your first order and start the journey to optimal health and support a company with a relentless passion for people and planet!

As ever if you enjoy the episode please do share it to your insta stories and leave a review on the podcasts app. Do go check out Matt’s incredibly informative instagram page as well @mattjarosy

22 Sep 2021Staying Alive in Toxic Times with Dr Jenny Goodman00:50:40

Today I have a really fantastic episode for you with Dr Jenny Goodman, author of the fantastic must-read book Staying Alive In Toxic Times. Jenny started her career as a medical doctor but became completely disillusioned with the methodology of purely treating symptoms and not offering any preventative medicine. She then found Ecological Medicine, which is very similar to Functional Medicine and Nutritional Therapy where we look at the body as one whole system and try to get to the root cause of problems.

Her book is a manual for 21st century living divided up into the four seasons to cover off seasonal eating, they types of toxins that are most prevalent at certain times of the year (eg early autumn for mould), and also contains lots of really fascinating case studies form her own clinical experience. We cover sunscreen and its dangers, why grounding is actually just pure science, organic food and agriculture, mould and light among many other topics.

It’s a fantastic listen and I hope you enjoy it. You can find Jenny via her instagram @dr_jenny_goodman to via her website drjennygoodman.com

10 Feb 2020Ben Bidwell: Let's talk about sex, baby!00:44:20

In today’s episode I’m talking to Ben Bidwell. You may know Ben as @thenakedprofessor, and you may not know his face at, just his naked bum! The clue is in the name, Ben really does pose naked in his Instagram photos and as you’ll find out in this episode there is sound reasoning as to why he does this.

I heard Ben on another podcast and something he said really stuck out for me and I contacted him right away to ask if he’d like to discuss it further on STATE OF MIND. He said that the last piece in his healing journey was resolving the issue he has around sex.

This really resonated with me and in our discussion on this episode I found that my eyes were being opened to the fact that sex isn’t always easy for men. For so long I’ve just thought that it’s us women that have the hang ups, the reservations, the lack of self-confidence but my eyes were truly opened talking to Ben and I’m very grateful to him for that.

For more details on Ben and to learn about his life coaching practice go find him on instagram @thenakedprofessor As ever, if you enjoy this episode I would be beyond grateful if you could help me to spread the word about state of mind by sharing the episode to your instagram stories and subscribing to the podcast via the Apple Podcasts App.

06 Apr 2021Why Your Mouthwash is Ruining Your Health: The Oral Microbiome with Dr Mehlaqa Khan00:36:42

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND hosted by Nutritional Therapist, Grace Kingswell.

Today's guest is Mehlaqa Khan; dentist, periodontal specialist and follower of nutritional therapy and functional medicine principles. She takes an innovative 360 degree approach to her dental patients, incorporating the functional medicine principles of systemic health.

In this epidote we’re talking about the oral microbiome and why it’s the number one step to maintaining good health overall. Your mouth is your first line of defence against invading pathogens and signals are sent from the mouth to the rest of the immune system when something enters that is potentially harmful to our health. Amazing!

The amount of knowledge in this episode is so incredible, you’ll learn why mouthwash isn’t the best way to look after your oral health, the difference that oral probiotics can make to periodontal disease, how gum disease occurs and why, and how leaky MOUTH is the first step on the road to leaky GUT.

We also discuss which toothpastes to buy, whether oil pulling and tongue scraping are 'woo woo' or scientifically sound, whether manual toothbrushes need to be a thing of the past and so much more...

Do share this episode to your insta stories if you enjoy it, and leave a review on the podcast app!

07 Sep 2022Reflexology for Fertility and Pregnancy with Karen Hooton00:45:08

Hello and welcome back to State of Mind with me, Grace Kingswell.

Today’s episode is on the topic of reflexology for fertility and pregnancy and my guest is Karen Hooton, reflexologist, Nutritional Therapist and Homeopath. I met Karen because we’re both currently doing Sandra Greenbank’s fertility nutrition training and Karen always has so much to add of value to our weekly calls, that I just had to get her on the podcast.

In this episode we cover how you might use reflexology as an adjunct to your fertility journey, when to have sessions if you’re trying to conceive, or already pregnant. Whether it ‘brings on labour,’ as many people say, but also how it works - i.e. based around the meridian systems that correlate with traditional Chinese medicine.

Due to Karen’s all round knowledge in so many areas, we also discuss other factors that might be influencing fertility too. It’s a great listen, and I hope you enjoy it!

Find Karen on instagram @moonbeamtherapies and as ever, if you enjoy the episode please remember to leave a review!

09 Feb 2024Water Filters, Water Structuring, Fluoride, Alkaline Water and More with Matt Jarosy00:50:39

Welcome back to State of Mind! This episode covers everything to do with WATER.

We start off by discussing water structuring, an amazing concept that details how water in its natural state (i.e. moving, never still) organises itself to actually be more hydrating for our cells.

We discuss water filters and compare the best on the market, fluoride, minerals, the pitfalls of reverse osmosis, alkaline water (fad?) and much more.

Thank you to Matt for chatting to me! Matt is the founder of supplement brand Elivide, and coincidentally, he's just launched a rather amazing counter top water filter! Go check it out at elivide.com

09 Mar 2020Amy Selvin: What's Wrong With Yoga00:35:52

Hello and Welcome back to State of Mind, I’m Grace Kingswell and I’m a Nutritional Therapist, cold water swimmer, Auricular Acupuncturist and Breathwork coach, and this is my podcast series all about health, nutrition, lifestyle medicine, sustainability and so much more.

Today I’m talking to Amy Selvin of Flow Motion Yoga. Amy started her career as an osteopath, which she didn’t like, then retrained as a yoga instructor, which she didn’t like, and so now she teaches a method she’s developed that incorporates animal movement and parkour into a challenging yoga flow!

Amy has some pretty challenging opinions on life and the world at large, and she’s not afraid to speak her mind on the perhaps quite prescriptive nature of the yoga practice we all know and love so much.

This is a great episode for anyone wanting to learn more about movement and how to use and move our bodies to their full potential. We also filmed a morning mobility sequence together which you can find on my IGTV.

As ever, if you enjoy this episode I would be beyond grateful if you could help me to spread the word about state of mind by sharing the episode to your instagram stories and writing me a rave review on the apple podcasts app.

12 Jan 2021Man-made illness, mental health, nudes and body neutrality with Imogen Ivy01:02:49

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND, with me Grace Kingswell.

Today’s guest is someone I’ve been wanting to talk to for ages, she’s always at the top of my Instagram stories and I devour everything she puts online. Her name is Imogen Ivy and she’s a creative director, photographer and videographer from Australia, living in London.

What drew me to Imogen to begin with was her dancing, her joyful, uninhibited, dancing-in-the-middle-of-the-street in London type of dancing - the kind that lifts your soul and makes you smile ridiculously at your phone screen, whilst also simultaneously thinking “gosh I wish I could move my body like that.”

As the months passed I started to get fragments of a health battle via Imogen’s Instagram, she speaks a lot about movement as a privilege, and having had that privilege taken away form her in her past. She’s eloquent and well-versed, in the way that only one with personal experience could be, on the topics of mental health and body neutrality too.

I was really intrigued.

What follows in this episode is an utterly heartbreaking, in places, and raw account of her journey with mental health that went from being probably quite a standard issue to a medically-induced, man-made shit show.

Thank you to Imogen for sharing her incredible story with us, and providing lots of humour and important messages along the way. You can find her on instagram @imogenfkingivy

06 Nov 2019Alison Mountford: Food waste, the joke's on us.00:43:46

Hello and welcome to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell, I’m a Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate and this is my series all about health, mental wellbeing, state of mind, the environment, creating sustainable practices and finding true connection with yourself, those around you and with nature.

Today I’m talking to Alison Mountford, the founder of Ends + Stems - a recipe delivery service that aims to reduce your food waste. The reason I was so excited to talk to Alison is because she’s all about community, and, having been on this podcast journey for some time now I’ve realised that regaining our sense of community is the number one way that we all start thinking with a more sustainable mindset.

Of course, the statistics on food waste are shocking - 24 million slices of bread a day are wasted in the UK alone, but we go much deeper than that in this podcast episode and start to discuss fundamental human behaviours surrounding waste, our careless throw away attitudes and the whys and hows of this food waste issue.

Alison and her team have developed a clever calculator that will tell you at the end of each week how many kilograms of greenhouse gasses you’ve saved by following her meal plans - I think this is amazing as it gives you a truly tangible way to make a difference. But it gets even better, then Alison worked with a specialist to figure out how many slices of pizza would equate to kilograms of greenhouse gasses so that at the end of each week she can accurately tell you how many slices of pizza you’ve saved from land fill.

There is so much knowledge and insight in this episode and I really hope you enjoy it!

16 Feb 2021Could mould allergy be the missing piece of your health puzzle? With Alex Manos IFMCP00:41:57

Today, my guest Alex Manos and I are talking about a VERY important topic in Nutritional Therapy and Functional Medicine - Mould and Mycotoxins.

This might be new terminology for you but don’t switch off, mould allergy or mycotoxicosis is increasingly becoming one of the biggest players in the chronic health game. When you’ve tried everything from gut work to hormonal treatment to dietary changes and looking at stress and lifestyle and you still have no answers, then it’s worth thinking about whether you’ve ever lived in a water damaged property because mycotoxins could be causing you a significant problem.

We also potentially exacerbate the issue with contaminated foods too: coffee, peanuts, grains and dried fruit being just some of the culprits.

When Alex lists the associated symptoms with mould illness and mycotoxins I think you’ll be shocked how relatable they are to you, so do keep listening and if you want to discuss any of the topics covered in this episode further then don’t hesitate to get in touch.

The sponsor of this episode couldn’t be more perfect wither, because its Exhale coffee, which is free from mycotoxins, heavy metals and pesticides - but I’m going to tell you more about that later and give you a discount code to try some for yourself. GRACE40 at checkout

15 Dec 2020Red Light Therapy and its benefits with Bryan Gohl00:52:18

Welcome back to STATE OF MIND with me, Grace Kingswell - Nutritional Therapist, breathwork coach, speaker and writer.

Today's guest is Bryan Gohl, co founder of Red Light Rising - the UK’s leading red light therapy manufacturer. You’ve all seen me using my red light on Instagram and it’s probably the thing I get asked about the most, so I thought it was high time we delved into the science and they reasons behind why these lamps are an amazing health tool to include into your daily routine.

I originally got the lamp to help with eczema but quickly found that it was an amazing adjunct to a life lived in accordance with our circadian rhythms, plus a great way to recover from exercise and calm inflammation in the body - and inflammation is at the heart of every chronic condition, so it's a great place to start!

For more info head over to redlightrising.co.uk where you can find loads more info via the blog section of their website. They also sell high quality blue blocking glasses, and actually Bryan and I talk a lot about blue light and melatonin in this episode too!

09 Jan 2019Caroline Deisler: Colonics, Cryo and Vegan Eats.00:45:34

Hello and welcome to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell, I’m a Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate and this is my series all about health, mental wellbeing, state of mind, the environment, creating sustainable practices and finding true connection with yourself, those around you and with nature.

Caroline Deisler is a model turned Instagrammer and she’s been a passionate Vegan for 4 years and was vegetarian before that. The reason I wanted to get Caroline on the podcast is because being a trainee nutritionist myself and a passionate foodie, I am fascinated by what people eat. By most people’s standards Caroline’s lifestyle and her food choices are very extreme, although the more and more she talks about it the more normal it feels. As you’ll hear in this episode Caroline is basically a Fruitarian although she does deviate from her fruity faves at dinnertime when she cooks a big veggie meal.

I was keen to know how she sustains this type of lifestyle, not only for herself but for those around her; how does it work alongside her non-vegan fiancée or when she’s travelling and socialising? There are all things we cover in this episode along with some more less-talked about topics like colonic irrigation and cryo therapy.

I found out what STATE OF MIND means to Caroline, but what does it mean to you?

03 Jul 2019Club Cultured: Finding peace, Veganism, health and tempBAE.00:31:55

Hello and welcome to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell, I’m a Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate and this is my series all about health, mental wellbeing, state of mind, the environment, creating sustainable practices and finding true connection with yourself, those around you and with nature.

Club Cultured is a tempeh company doing things differently, organically and properly. Di you know that the tempeh you buy in the supermarket is pasteurised? Neither did I! Tempeh is a fermented soy food that is a zillion times better for you than it's overly processed counterpart, tofu. It contains beneficial, natural probiotics and the nutrients are also far more bioavailable (i.e they get absorbed better and faster by our bodies), because of that fact that it’s fermented and sort of “pre digested."

Nutrition waffle aside, the boys at Club Cultured have plans far beyond just making the best tempeh London has to offer. They want to use their business for good, build schools, educate on issues of environmental sustainability, promote a nutritious and low impact vegan lifestyle and continue to innovate within the plant based food space.

They tell us how a chance trip to Australia, and then Bali, led them to discover Veganism, mindfulness and meditation and how they brought what they’d learnt back with them to the home shores to start making and developing “London’s best balls (more on that in the episode), and other wicked tempeh recipes.

Tim is the founder of plant based cafe chain, CPRESS. We talk in this episode a little bit about building the CPRESS brand and starting a company from the ground up and what that entails; for example Tim let's us know that he hasn't really exercised in over a year, that he receives hundreds of emails a day but that he still makes conscious and measured decisions every day about what he puts into his body.

We discuss his blueberry muffin addiction when he still worked in private equity before he started CPRESS (his story telling is on point and it's pretty funny!), and how adopting a dairy and gluten free approach to food really revolutionised his life and his health.

Tim has a lot of insight into some pretty niche topics that I throw at him, and he even indulges us in that youtube favourite; What I Eat In A Day.

01 Dec 2020Is your iPhone killing you? EMFs with Daniel DeBaun00:53:19

Daniel DeBaun is the founder of Defender shield, a company making products that help protect us from EMF radiation.

EMF radiation, electro magnetic fields, are what are emitted by our devices including telecommunications, phones, 3G, 4G, 5G, and wifi to name a few.

Emerging research is showing that EMFs damage our cells and our DNA, disrupt our sleep, increase the incidence of mood disorders, miscarriages and fertility issues and a whole other host of complications.

Daniel is at the forefront of all of this with his company having spent his entire career in the telecommunications industry before he began looking into the edict on human health and changed track.

Listening to this episode makes me nervous, I’m not going to lie. I already turn the wifi off at night but there’s so much more I could be doing to protect myself.

01 Jul 2022Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with Jo Foster00:47:57

Today’s episode is on the topic of CFS, also known as ME - i.e. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I have the lovely Jo Foster on with me today. Jo’s a Nutritional Therapist, but also a CFS survivor. She suffered with debilitating symptoms over a period of about 7 years but now lives a completely normal, health and happy life.

We talk about what CFS actually is, how you get it, what the mechanisms are, and crucially, what to start thinking about in terms of treatment. You CAN heal from chronic fatigue syndrome, that much is certain, but it’s wholly misunderstood and under researched in our conventional health system.

We also touch on long covid briefly too, which may be of interest to some of you.

22 Mar 2020Annie Clarke: Relationships, defining our boundaries, building a community 00:48:59

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell and I’m a Nutritional Therapist, Breathwork Coach and Auricular Acupuncturist, and this is my podcast series all about health, functional medicine, sustainability, finding connection, diet and so much more.

I’m beyond excited to introduce you to the wonderful Annie Clark of Mind Body Bowl. Annie is one of the most intelligent, articulate, compassionate and downright kind souls I’ve had the pleasure to interview for my podcast and, in light of the current Corona virus situation, I hope you will find this episode on connection incredibly poignant. Annie and I recorded this at a time where we could frivolously condemn the “fake” connection via social media in favour of true, meaningful, physical connection with our community.

Well I think one thing that this current social distancing situation is showing us is that actually, we all have (thank goodness) at our fingertips an incredible resource through which we can find some comfort and connection during this difficult time.

This is one of those episodes that just gets better and better as it goes on, and I really hope you enjoy listening to it as much as I enjoyed chatting to Annie.

As a final note, I’ve made available via my website a £5 eBook on Immunity. It contains my 4 main recommendations for supporting our bodies right now, and delves someway into the science behind how the immune system works. There’s no supplements, food recommendations (although there are a few recipes at the back), or expensive potions for you to buy 0 just sound, scientific advice on supporting you body’s first line of defence. I hope it helps you.

I have an incredible guest for you today - Robyn Puglia. Robyn is a Nutritional Therapist and IFM Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner. She specialises in Autoimmune Disease, Gluten-Reactive Disorders including Coeliac Disease, Complex Cases and Unexplained Illness.

I wanted to quiz Robyn on some really basic concepts but get her to go into depth about what’s actually happening in our bodies on a cellular level. We speak about blood sugar, sleep, alcohol, coffee and diet dogma and oh my goodness you will learn SO much from this episode - it’s one of my all times faves.

I am SO excited to have Debbie on the podcast because she literally encapsulates everything I am trying to promote about nutrition, health and wellness: that fundamentally we cannot compartmentalise the body if we want to peruse optimum health.

Modern medicine, amazing though it may be, seeks to divide the body up into sections - you go to Dermatologist for your skin and a Gastroenterologist for your gut but a Dermatologist would never tell you that your skin is bad because your gut health is off.

Functional Medicine looks at the whole body as one system and recognises that you can’t spray weed killer onto a problem if you want to cure it because it will never, ever reach the root cause.

In this episode we debunk a LOT of nutrition myths, from celery juice to fasting, what you should really be eating for breakfast, whether we all need probiotics and SO much more.

Please please share this episode if you find it useful and you enjoy it - I want the information on this podcast to reach as many people as possible so that we can bring about change in this industry that’s saturated with bliss balls, overnight oats, celery juice, detoxes and quick fixes!!!

29 May 2019Dr Adam Gill: Using behaviour change and ethnography to change the wellness industry and our sustainability efforts00:50:00

I am so unbelievably excited for you to all hear this episode with Dr Adam Gill and the insight he shares into human behaviour, communities, the health and wellness industry and so much more.

Adam sheds some serious light onto questions such as why are we all so obsessed with health, why do we care what each other are eating, how can we use behaviour change and ethnography to positively impact environmental change and our culture of action reward that lead us all to the chocolate bar when we feel like we 'deserve' it.

Adam is an ethnographer and the  founder of Wilding, a creative ad agency using ethnography and behaviour change to improve health. He has a PhD in community participation theory and has worked in the NHS and the health and wellness sector to help clients understand more, and action insights to improve services for patients. He has recently founded the creative advertising health and wellness agency, Wilding, which is determined to challenge unhealthy behaviours and to produce relevant and meaningful creative advertising campaigns for clients.

He’s all about disruption, what’s on the peripheries and doing things just a little bit differently.I think this episode will answer some of your health industry hang ups, as it certainly answered mine!

Adam can we found online at wearewilding.com and on social @wilding_health

30 Mar 2020Truth and Heart with Australian model and actor Rhys Uhlich00:35:21

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell and I’m a Nutritional Therapist, Breathwork Coach and Auricular Acupuncturist, and this is my podcast series all about health, functional medicine, sustainability, finding connection, diet and so much more.

Today, in the final episode of series 4, I’m on location in Australia with male model, actor, designer, documentary maker, father ran business owner, Rhys Uhlich. I took the opportunity to interview Rhys when my husband and I were in Australia visiting family on Phillip Island at the start of this year. I’d followed Rhys on social media for a while and lovely his incredibly sensitive and thoughtful take on life. One day it might be him doing up an old defender, and the next getting all spiritual and discussing male mental health - which is something we chat extensively about in this episode actually.

His journey to where ehe is now is really interesting and I think proves that life is never linear, straightforward or logical - it is what we make of it, and what we create from it is up to each of us.

Head to the link in my instagram bio to grab your copy - I hope it helps you.

03 Feb 2020The White Death (sugar) with Nutritionist Liv Kaplan00:37:48

Liv Kaplan is a Sydney based Nutritionist and foodie with a huge passion for baking. In this episode Liv explains why she lives a low sugar lifestyle and the surprising effects it can have on our mood and our happiness levels, in fact, her journey to health began when she noticed a difference in her incidence of depression when she switched up her diet. We also discuss why Liv doesn't agree with the typical definition of depression...

The topic of mood, depression and anxiety is one that we touch on a lot in this episode. So many people are suffering with anxiety these days and it can often be linked to poor blood sugar regulation and not having the correct nutrients to fuel our brains properly - namely omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids, something that's hard to come by on a vegan diet or an omnivorous diet lacking in nutrients.

As ever, if you enjoy this episode I would be beyond grateful if you could help me to spread the word about STATE OF MIND by sharing the episode to your Instagram stories and writing me a rave review on the apple podcasts app.

02 Mar 2020Alex Manos: Stop Taking Probiotics (maybe)01:05:06

In this week's episode I'm joined by fellow Nutritional Therapist, Alex Manos. Alex is a very, very highly regarded practitioner in the UK and he holds numerous degrees and qualifications, among them a BSc in Nutritional Therapy, an MSc in Personalised Nutrition and he is a member of the Institute for Functional Medicine - and we're talking all about gut health...but not as you know it.

I’d been waiting and waiting to do a dedicated episode on gut heath on my podcast, and when Alex agreed to be a guest I was beyond excited to finally talk all things gut bacteria, the microbiome, SIBO, oral microbiome and so much more.

We start our discussion off with how important it is to look after your dental hygiene because yes, you’ve guessed it, your oral microbiome is linked to your gut microbiome and both need to be in tip top condition for things to work smoothly. We then go on to talk about SIBO, Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth, which is what I suffered from multiple times myself and what lead me down the path of finally healing my body from chronic illness and becoming a Nutritional Therapist.

We also discuss probiotics and why you don’t need to take them every morning like that influencer you saw shotting Symprove on their stories, we discuss the importance of diet and what to do if you find you can’t tolerate grains and legumes, we discuss antimicrobials, the gut Brian axis and so much more.

This is a MUST LISTEN episode if you want to upgrade your health. Huge thanks to Alex for sharing his wisdom and knowledge with me and I hope you leave the episode feeling empowered and ready to take your health to the next level.

As ever, if you enjoy this episode I would be beyond grateful if you could help me to spread the word about state of mind by sharing the episode to your Instagram stories and writing me a rave review on the apple podcasts app.

We also talk about Freda, the period subscription service that she helps run, and their give back pledge that aims to help women experiencing period poverty. Flora's answer to "what's one thing you'd do again if you could?" is my favourite yet!

Hello and welcome to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell, I’m a Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate and this is my series all about health, mental wellbeing, state of mind, the environment, creating sustainable practices and finding true connection with yourself, those around you and with nature.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Today I’m talking to Georgie Spurling and we’re going deep into dealing with grief, loss, break ups, fitness and lifestyle.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Georgie's journey to health began way back when she had a heart condition as a youngster and was told she’ never really be able to exercise. She completely disregarded her doctors and trained to be a PT and went hard for a few years dancing, exercising and going to multiple HIIT workouts.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ Unsurprisingly she struck burnout and chronic fatigue and, having been bedridden for 3 months, she began slowly to rebuild her strength but it a completely different way to how she’d gone about things before.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ More recently, Georgie has had a pretty tough time of it and life has definitely dealt her a rough hand. We talk about how she’s coped with the grief of losing one of her best fiends in a terrible accident, and suffering a breakup all in the space of a week.⁣ ⁣ ⁣ She’s a total inspiration and I hope you get a lot from this episode.⁣ ⁣ ⁣@gracekingswell

Wow! What an episode; this girl is SO wise. I learnt a lot talking to Heloise about life, love, tragedy and loss; and all round health and nutrition. For someone of such a tender young age, she certainly has lived through a lot and has used her experiences to positively influence the way she lives her life now.

Heloise is a French model, nutrition student and is currently at university studying fashion marketing. She's also pretty well know for dating a certain famous face and we discuss how this romance has had a positive influence on her relationship with food. We also talk about what motivates her, what she's passionate about and why French women really just don't give a sh*t!

There are some hilarious moments and some really beautiful and poignant ones too; I hope you enjoy this episode and find it useful and valuable to you in your life!

28 Aug 2019Intermittent Fasting with expert and coach Sonia Wisinger00:46:30

Hello and welcome back to State of Mind. I’m Grace Kingswell and I’m a Nutritional Therapist and lifestyle Medicine Advocate. That means that I’m as likely to prescribe supplement and dietary recommendations to a patient as meditation or getting out into nature.

This is my podcast series all about health, wellness, creating sustainable habits and practices, our environment and much more.

Today I am talking to Sonia Wisinger. Sonia is a fasting expert and runs a successful fasting practice from London’s prestigious Harley Street. Sonia’s fasting journey began long before fasting became widely known as a health, beauty and wellness tool. Having started fasting back in 1999 she has acquired vast experience in the most efficient way to practice time restricted feeding as well as intermittent and extended fasting methods.

I myself am quite a fan of a fast, I find that it’s given me a new perspective on what hunger really is, and feeling like I don't need my life to be dictated by mealtimes so much! It’s also worked wonders on my digestion!

11 Sep 2019It's time to 'Do Summit Good' for our planet, ourselves and our community.00:33:56

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND, my podcast series all about health and nutrition and living a conscious and connected life with yourself and those around you. I'm Grace and I'm a Nutritional Therapist ad Lifestyle Medicine Advocate who can often be found cold water swimming, doing some breath work or cooking up a storm in the kitchen!

Today I’m talking to the amazing Josh Pike who has spearheaded the community based project 'Do Summit Good' in Wales. I met josh one morning at sunrise when we swam in the sea together on Rotherslade Beach on the Gower Peninsula. I got talking to Josh about his life’s mission and swiftly realised that here was a man doing incredible things for his community, our planet and himself.

He’s recently crowdfunded £10,000 to buy a very special steam oven to bake what he calls Truffle Bars. One of the projects that Summit Good is working on is their Truffle Bar Bar, a deliciously chocolatey vegan truffle bar made from borlotti beans grown on a community farm on the Gower peninsula.

Josh tells me the story of why he went from running successful cafes in Swansea to living in a van with his wife for 8 months and then finally realising that he wanted to Do Summit Good.

If you enjoy the episode I’d love it if you could leave me a review on iTunes podcast app if you haven’t already, and share the episode to your Instagram stories so that more people can find the podcast!

16 Oct 2019I've got beef with compostable plastics: Here's why...00:21:12

In this soundbite I'm talking about something I'm pretty damn passionate about: the problem with compostable plastics. I've been researching this topic for a while and there is nothing I love to wax lyrical about more, except maybe the merits of cold water therapy and sunlight =)

Confused whether your compostable coffee cup can go in your green waste? Feeling good about yourself when you sip from a 'green cup,' not sure whether all bio plastics are recyclable, compostable or degradable?

What even is the difference between degradable and biodegradable, and what are the conditions that warrant something actually being able to label itself as biodegradable?

Let's discuss.

12 Jun 2019Lea Sednaoui: The Blood Type Diet00:40:01

Hello and welcome to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell, I’m a Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate and this is my series all about health, mental wellbeing, state of mind, the environment, creating sustainable practices and finding true connection with yourself, those around you and with nature.

In this weeks episode I'm talking to Lea Sednaoui (@chewchoose), chef and follower of the Blood Type Diet. Lea was struggling with her health when she turned 30, she was sluggish, overweight, sleeping badly, eating excessive amounts of animal protein and she turned it all around to be the vibrant and energetic person she is now. The Blood Type diet is, duh, different for each blood type and you stick to foods that are beneficial for your type as dictated by founder and geneticist, Dr D'Adamo.

We also talk about our modern fascination with eating the same foods over and over again (hello overnight oats with nut butter), our Western sense of entitlement surrounding food, and how we're all missing a trick by not including anything more varied - not just for our health but also our tastebuds!

Lea's food is an incredible fusion of Lebanese and French cuisine and she's passionate about slow cooking, slow living and really embracing our culinary heritage.

25 Sep 2019Richie Norton: All the Feelings (plus connection, mindset, movement and mitochondria) 00:47:36

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell and I’m a Nutritional Therapist (D. N. Med) and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate. Essentially that means that I’m down for hard core health facts but also lifestyle hacks like cold thermogenesis, meditation and mindfulness and harnessing the power of your own body.

This leads me on perfectly to introduce my guest today, Richie Norton. Richie is the man behind The Strength Temple, a name which I feel both suits him and doesn’t, because he’s one of the gentlest and kindest people I’ve been lucky enough to meet on this epic podcasting journey and we spent such a blissful hour or so discussing life, health, mindset, movement and everything in between.

Richie is an ex-rugby player turned PT, turned Yogi turned XPT coach turned LEGEND and in this episode we talk a LOT about feelings. I think it’s a valuable episode for anyone out there that just feels like they want to connect a little but more, whether that be with themselves or with those around them. A lot of the golden moments in this episode come from the gentle unfolding of Richie’s story, his life and the strange and wonderful things that have happened to him along the way.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. If you want to support the podcast, and I’d love it if you did, you can post it to your Instagram stories and encourage your friends to get involved, and of course, there’s always that all important review on the apple podcasts app.

Get ready to learn a LOT from this episode. Ryan, a.k.a the man behind the incredible Instagram account @livevitae, is a fountain of knowledge when it comes to all things nutrition, cold therapy, blue light, sleep cycles and mindset. His view on health is so refreshing and I particularly love the part of this episode when we talk about how the most important source of data when it comes to your health isn't the latest evidence based study; it's you, your body, and how YOU feel. If something works for you, like drinking celery juice for example...then go on and do it! We also discuss one of my favourite subjects; cold water therapy and our circadian rhythm and how we can support this in a world that bombards us 24/7 with artificial blue light. LiveVitae means live life, and that is what Ryan does in a way that's 100% unique to him.

04 Sep 2019The Other Side of Cold with Wim Hof Instructor, Tom Parry00:35:52

Hello and welcome back to state of mind, I’m grace Kingswell and I’m a nutritional therapist, cold water swimmer and nature lover. I believe that we can gain so much power and understanding from tuning in and listening to our bodies, from reconnecting with nature and with those around us.

I help my patients heal from gut health issues, hormonal imbalances and fad diets but I also encourage them to step up for their own health, to be an active participant in that journey and to be their own best doctor.

This is why I’m so excited to bring to an episode today with Tom parry. Tom is the director of Live Long Ltd, a wellness clinic in Suffolk dedicated to helping people to live in a more engaged way. The practice is home to osteopaths, Pilates instructors, nutritionists and more, and, they hold regular Wim Hof breath work and ice bath workshops.

You might have seen on my Instagram that I did my first ice bath experience with Tom when I went to meet him for the podcast, and that’s because he’s a professional Wim Hof instructor. It was my first experience of breath work too, which was amazing and completely uplifting.

We talk a lot in this episode about taking responsibility for your own health, and I came away from it feeling uplifted and inspired. I hope you do too!

If you enjoy the episode and you haven’t already I would be so grateful if you could leave me a review on iTunes as it really helps to get the podcast heard by more people!

10 Jul 2019Sophie Hellyer: Cold Water Swimming, Sustainability and Feminism. 00:45:40

I absolutely loved this chat with Sophie, she's such a breath of fresh air in this polluted city. Sophie grew up surfing and immersing herself in nature in Devon and Wales, and has moved to London to further her career as a sustainability activist, feminist and writer. She swims regularly in London's outdoor pools and ponds, and has been known to go for a dip when there's actually a layer of ice on the water...

We talk about how the sustainability movement is a middle class one, how flying is the real culprit if you want to decrease your impact on our planet (although, please do continue to carry your reusable water bottle because it all helps), and how you can get into slow fashion, cold water and living consciously.

05 Jun 2019Sound Bite 2: Community and Creating Happiness 00:10:29

Hello and welcome to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell, I’m a Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate and this is my series all about health, mental wellbeing, state of mind, the environment, creating sustainable practices and finding true connection with yourself, those around you and with nature.

In this sound bite I'm reflecting on the idea of community and how our lack of it is changing the way we experience health and wellness. Specifically, I look at the parallels between our disparate lives and our wellbeing, seen most clearly in our experience of mental health.

I go through the 4 ways that I stay happy on a daily basis and talk about why your happiness and balance needs to come from within first and foremost. It's only when we're balanced and can actually get to a place where little things don't stress us out, that we can really begin to live a lifestyle of consistency.

I delve into my morning routine as well and discuss the new community that I've just founded, Slow Sundays (on Insta @slowsundays_) to help people connect through movement and wild swimming here in London.

27 Jun 2019Sound Bite 3: Why alternative medicine always wins AND what to eat for breakfast00:14:39

My goal is to inspire everyone to get back to peak health. I recognise that being on the periphery of orthodox thought can be completely liberating because it allows you to explore niche lifestyle techniques that can have a profound impact on someone's physical health.

The second part of this sound bite is directed towards everyone's favourite meal, breakfast, and why I've completely overhauled not only what I eat, but when I eat it too. I realised that my energy wasn't great and that I was probably struggling with some blood sugar issues - always needing carby foods, a sweet treat after a meal and a snack close at hand. Well, if you want to stabilise your hunger cravings and realign with your body then this episode is for you!

As ever, please leave me a review as this really helps to get more people hearing the podcast!

18 Sep 2019Sound Bite 6: Intuitive Eating 00:10:02

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND, my podcast series all about health and nutrition and living a conscious and connected life with yourself and those around you.

In this short soundbite I'm talking about the new buzzword...Intuitive Eating. I was on holiday recently and reading a book all about IE...but every few pages I'd feel like having an ice cream or some chocolate because I was being 'intuitive,' and it got me thinking about the difference between eating intuitively and eating for health...

31 Jul 2019Sustainability is a middle class movement: creating sustainable interior spaces with Victoria Meale 00:37:26

Hello and welcome back to state of mind. I’m grace Kingswell and this is my series all about health, wellness and conscious living - both from a planetary and from a health perspective.

Today I’m talking to Victoria Meale. Victoria is a sustainable interior designer and this episode starts with our discussion of what that actually means and how she goes about designing a space that’s built to last whilst focusing on using materials that don’t pollute our homes or release toxins into the air we breath.

Then the conversation shifts towards her and the way she lives her life. Victoria has a lot of insight to share on living consciously, especially with regards to how she’s bringing up her son, and she is a firm believer of needing to find acceptance of the ways that others choose to live their lives, which I think is an important concept because it’s all to easy to get on your high horse and start being preachy when it comes to 'sustainability.'

We talk about how she lives in tune with the sun, not using any blinds or curtains at home, how her, her partner and her son all co-sleep and how she deals with the judgement she feels from other mothers or people around her who disagree with the way she’s doing things.

Follow Victoria @mysustainablelife

It’s certainly an interesting and thought provoking episode and I hope you enjoy it! Please do leave a 5 star review on the podcasts app if you enjoy it!

30 Oct 2019The Happy Pear: Mainlining Nature + Being Insecure Humans00:30:04

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND, I’m Grace Kingswell - Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle medicine advocate and boy do I have some incredible guests for you today!

A couple of months ago my Mum and I went on a girls holiday to Greystones in Ireland. The goal to was to do lots of walking, see some beautiful scenery and just generally get into nature… but also (on my part) to swim at Sunrise with The Happy Pear.

I’ve been following David and Stephen Flynn (aka The Happy Pear), for quite some time on Instagram and have always just been completely obsessed with their ethos, outlook on life, quirkiness and positivity. Having been a passionate swimmer for quite some time I was so excited to swim with a community that loved the cold water and the sea as much as I do.

I became pretty chummy with Dave and Steve and we kept in touch over the last few months via Instagram, and, when my husband and I went back to Greystones last month for his birthday, I was lucky enough to record a podcast with the boys.

Now if you follow Dave and Steve on insta you’ll know that these two have hectic lives, and given that Nick and I were only in Ireland for a few days it seemed unlikely that we were going to be able to squeeze the recording in. However, typical to their welcoming and unbelievably friendly nature, Steve and Dave invited Nick and I along with them on their road trip around Dublin where they were speaking in schools about climate change and eating more vegetables.

That day we woke up at 4.30am, squeezed in the car all together and hit to road. Our first stop was a sunrise swim at a beach in Dublin, followed by breakfast on the side of the road and a coffee in a local cafe. Then we drove to the first of two schools that the lads were speaking at and watched as they delivered an incredibly engaging talk on why we all need to be eating more fruit and veg.

Then it was off to the second school on the other side of town, then to a radio interview, and then, after lunch in the park, we found 30 minutes in which to sit down, get behind the mics and put the world to rights.

I was really keen not to just get Dave and Steve to retell their story of how they started The Happy Pear, since I know that you’ve all probably heard it before and they’d probably had enough of telling it for that day! So, I aimed, as ever to ask pertinent questions on topics such as the climate crisis, the future of humanity, creating positive change, metal attitudes and happiness.

I think the most profound thing I say all episode is: “you’re the happy pear. You’re really happy.” Yeh, well done Grace!

One of my favourite parts of the episode is the comparison they make between illness and wellness: There is only an “I” in illness, but a ‘we’ in wellness.

I absolutely adore Dave and Steve and am so grateful to them for coming on the podcast! I do just want to say before we kick off that this is definitely not the usually quality of audio that you can expect from STATE OF MIND. We recorded it out in the open in a park, plus they boys kept snatching the microphone from one another, which was pretty funny to watch!

I’m sure you can tell from the banter that we had a great time recording this. If you enjoy it PLEASE please do share the podcast with your friends and family and on social media! And of course, there’s that all important rating and review on the apple podcasts app.

Thank you so much again for your continued support of STATE OF MIND!

16 Jan 2019Tori Boughey: TBalance, Chakra healing, Crystals and Self Care00:57:50

Hello and welcome to STATE OF MIND. Tori is the most calming and uplifting person that I know. I always feel really at peace whenever I see her and this really comes across in this episode; listening to her talk about how we all need to love ourselves a bit more and not get so hung up on what we think we should be doing or feeling is refreshing and so necessary. We chat everything from chakra healing, using crystals, changes in our subtle energies, why as women we shouldn't feel that we have to be hitting the gym, and Tori's love of a good cheeseboard...

09 Oct 2019Turning pain into power with Hayley Ray00:32:31

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND, the podcast series that’s all about empowering you to take control of your own health. I'm Grace Kingswell and I'm a Nutritional Therapist with a huge focus on lifestyle medicine and healing from chronic conditions.

This week’s guest is my dear friend Hayley Ray. Hayley is a women’s health, nutrition and wellbeing coach who helps women turn pain into power…The reason for this is that since age 11 Hayley has dealt with the most crippling period pain but for 10 years her doctors refused to believe her and left her to deal with this crippling condition, later discovered to be endometriosis, completely on her own.

She tells the story of how, 10 years down the line, she finally went in for some keyhole surgery to diagnose the endometriosis and the doctors found an undetected cyst on her left ovary.

Hayley took the situation into her own hands and has worked hard on lifestyle changes that have enabled her to manage her Endometriosis and PCOS.

She now coaches women 1-2-1, speaks publicly at events and generally just shares the wealth of knowledge she’s built up in how to deal with a chronic condition and turn it into a positive situation.

I had such a lovely chat with Hayley, and I hope you enjoy it to. So, on with the episode!

12 Dec 2018Tyrone Brennand: Started From The Bottom Now We're Here00:43:43

Hello and welcome to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell, I’m a Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate and this is my series all about health, mental wellbeing, state of mind, the environment, creating sustainable practices and finding true connection with yourself, those around you and with nature.

Tyrone Brennand is a personal trainer and creator of Be The Fittest. Tyrone tells us his story of becoming obsessed with martial arts, discovering yoga and how much movement meant to him at a young age and still does. He has a young family and we chat extensively about how hard it can be to strike the right work-life balance and how he felt when his young daughter described him as "Daddy's always working." Ty started off in life in very different circumstances to how he lives now, and this episode is a great reminder of how much hard work it takes to get to where you want to be. We found out what STATE OF MIND means to Ty, but what does it mean to you?

02 Oct 2019Why we've got #SelfCare all wrong with psychotherapist Emmy Brunner00:40:59

Hello and welcome back to STATE OF MIND. I’m Grace Kingswell, I’m a Nutritional Therapist and Lifestyle Medicine Advocate and this is my series all about health, mental wellbeing, state of mind, the environment, creating sustainable practices and finding true connection with yourself, those around you and with nature.

Today I’m talking to Emmy Brunner. Emmy is a clinical psychotherapist with  more than 15 years of experience focusing on women’s mental health and is the founder of the Recover Clinic in London, the UK’s #1 private treatment centre focused on trauma, eating disorders and body dysmorphia. Throughout her career, she has come to believe that the majority of mental health challenges are linked to unresolved trauma in one’s life. Emmy has discovered remarkable patterns in the ways women are conditioned to respond to trauma and life-challenges. She’s devoted her life to sharing her learnings with sufferers and has created an approach to the treatment of mental illness that aims to help individuals strive for holistic balance. Her unique approach focuses on the person behind the illness, not just the physical symptoms.

In this episode we’re talking about the concept of self care, as Emmy’s view on it is not what your typical millennial might classify as hashtag self care, i.e., getting a manicure, having a bath or buying yourself a new house plant.

We dive deep into Emmy’s definition of self care, trauma and also touch on food psychology and anxiety.

I learnt so much from Emmy in this episode and I hope you do too.
