Cycling journalist Laura Laker wondered what had gone right and, indeed, wrong, with a network once described by the CEO of the charity that runs it as “a bit crap”, and set off on an epic journey around the UK to find out more. That journey became the basis for her new book, Potholes and Pavements: A Bumpy Ride on Britain’s National Cycle Network. Fellow cycling enthusiast Jen, caught up with Laura to talk about what inspired her journey, the magic of travelling by bike, and why all leaders of a country should go on a big old road trip before they sign up to the job. 18 Jul 2021SIM Ep 524 Chops 215: The joy of divorce? Damn right, says Helen Thorn00:37:38
Helen Thorn's new book Get Divorced, Be Happy is an account of what she’s learned over a pretty big year, a sharing of the best tips she’s picked up along the way, a huge hug for anyone going through similar and a clink of the fizz glass to female friendship. It is *hugely* uplifting.  In this Chops, the Australian half of the Scummy Mummies chats to our Mick about self-reclamation, getting through life’s shitty bits, the joy as well as the tough parts of single mumming, and how what feels like the worst thing to ever happen to you could well be the best. 18 Dec 2019SIM Ep 319 Pod 94: Smashing stigma, a deadly downstairs and our women of the year01:01:41
#SmashAbortionStigma is the new campaign from Marie Stopes UK, aiming to make people feel more comfortable talking about their abortion experiences – that includes the healthcare professionals, too, as Dr Yvonne Neubauer, associate clinical director at Marie Stopes UK, explains to Mickey. We're also chatting to comedian Amy Vreeke about her one-woman comedy show, The Year My Vagina Tried To Kill Me, which covers her experiences with endometriosis and the fun and games* of being misdiagnosed, dismissed and definitely not cured.  In the Bush Telegraph, we're bigging up our women of the year, which include Caroline Criado-Perez, Greta Thunberg and Ayesha Hazarika. There are more excellent women in Jenny Off The Blocks's very own SPOTY. And there's way too much calamity to handle as Dunleavy Does Disaster checks out 2009's 2012. 27 Jan 2021SIM 461 Pod 140: Craftivism, cunning characters, and caring01:18:56
There’s plenty to be making noise about at the moment, but activism can take many different forms, so in this week’s podzine, Hannah gets on the blower to comedian, writer and Standard Issue fave, Jenny Éclair, to chat about her new BBC show Craftivism: Making a Difference, and the power of picking up your pins and needles. Since January is the perfect time to curl up with a good book, Jen is chatting to author Susie Yang about her debut novel, White Ivy, an alternative immigrant narrative and brilliantly dark class critique. We’re feeling Priti vacant and generally pretty fucked off at the government’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic and the CPS’s handling of rape cases in the Bush Telegraph. In Jenny off the Blocks, Jen talks #ICare and the women’s rugby players calling out online abuse, and there’s some incongruous traffic-related violation as Rated or Dated tackles Rocky V. Happy International Women’s Day – up the women! To celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, we’re running a series of interviews with some kick-ass broads. Ayesha Hazarika talks to us about politics, comedy and how the two can go hand-in-hand; Laura Bates chats about her new book Misogynation and some truly startling facts and figues about everyday sexism. 12 Sep 2024The Bush Telegraph: Ordinary men, horrific crimes00:32:34
This week, Mick and Jen are focusing on two stories gripping most women they know: the horrific mass rape case currently going through the French courts (and the astonishing bravery of Gisèle Pélicot), and the brutal murder of Olympian Rebecca Cheptegei. We’d apologise for it being so grim, but it’s hardly women’s fault, eh? 19 Nov 2018SIM Ep 181 IMD 5: Luke Hart on domestic violence and changing the narrative00:43:43
This week we’re doing things a bit differently. We’re always wanging on about how gender inequality is a ballbag for everyone – because it is. And so, around International Men’s Day on November 19, we decided to do a series of interviews where we chatted to blokes about what’s going on with the dudes. In this episode, Mickey has a frank and frankly heartbreaking conversation with Luke Hart about how language around domestic violence and coercive control needs to change. Luke is a domestic violence campaigner and co-author, alongside his brother Ryan, of Operation Lighthouse, which tells the story around how his mum Claire and sister Charlotte were murdered by his father. The National Domestic Violence Freephone Helpline is 0808 2000 247. 17 Apr 2024SIM Ep 962 Pod 301: Loretta Lynn, Tanya Franks and – whose hand is that? – oh, Tracy Flick01:22:41
You’ve seen Sharon Horgan’s brilliant sitcom Pulling, right? If you haven’t, please do go watch it immediately *waits impatiently, tapping foot* Okay! How good is Tanya Franks in it?!? SOOOO good. Which means you’ll understand why our Hannah has been champing at the bit for nigh on a decade to get an interview in. And here she is: Tanya Franks chatting to Hannah about accents, marathons, free speech, her current role in Power of Sail at the Menier Chocolate Factory and, of course, the joy and chaos of Karen in Pulling.  Another brilliant woman? But of course – have two. It’s been a while, but Liz Buckley, our resident font of all music knowledge, is back and she’s explaining to Mick why we should all love Loretta Lynn. Lynn might not have called herself a feminist, deeming the label too exclusive, but sweet Lordy, she was a shot in the arm for women in the very male, very conservative world of country music.  Get your camel toe out for the lads! In Jenny Off the Blocks, Jen’s looking at Nike’s new Olympics wear for Team America (fuck yeah!). And in Rated or Dated, can a satire satirise something before it’s even happened? We've all been under a lot of pressure in the last year and anecdotal evidence suggests it's starting to take its toll on the nation's relationships. So, this week, Hannah got on the phone to Dee Holmes from Relate, to find out if work pressures, health concerns, financial worries, grief, childcare issues and close proximity is bonding us closer together or tearing us apart. Mickey's chatting to Rebecca Watson about little scratch, her debut novel, a formally inventive day-in-the-life of a slightly hungover woman. In Jenny Off The Blocks, Jen's wondering if a top woman moving from managing women's football to men's football is good news for women in sport and Mick's off to Japan and Sutton Hoo in Sexism of the Week. And finally, in Rated or Dated, we very much are looking at you Robert, as we watch 1976's Taxi Driver and Hannah thinks she's identified Q. Tuck in! 18 Feb 2024SIM Ep 942 Chops 287: Len Pennie’s Poyums00:23:41
Performance poet Len Pennie is a big deal on the social media, particularly TikTok, where her Scots Word of the Day videos, forthright, urgent poetry and wicked sense of humour have made her a bona fide star. Published by Canongate on February 22, her debut poetry collection, Poyums, she covers a lot of ground, from depression and mental health to misogyny and abusive relationships. If that all sounds bleak, well, the topics are, but Len’s honesty, rawness, humour and playfulness of language make her poems anything but.  She chatted to our Mick about all of the above, the joy and importance of Scots language, and the problem with “nice guys”.  Learn more about your ad choices. 11 Jun 2024Ellen Atlanta’s pixelated nightmare00:33:27
Journalist Ellen Atlanta fell into a career in the beauty industry. Like many of us who subscribe to westernised beauty ideals and an online-culture, it was fine until it wasn’t. For Ellen, that was when she began to question whether or not she was part of the problem herself, and so began her work on her debut book, Pixel Flesh: How Toxic Beauty Culture Harms Women. In this episode, she chats to Jen about the book, a life spent online, the harmful standards women hold themselves up to and the increasingly dystopian nightmare of the cult of Kylie Jenner. 24 Jun 2020SIM Ep 387 Pod 115: Zooming, driving & showing gender stereotypes the door01:09:04
We love women, we love history, we love a whole lot of women's history. So, the good news is, in this week's podcast, Mickey chats to a Standard Issue fave, writer Anneka Harry about her new book Gender Rebels, which celebrates the diverse, defiant and daring women who changed the rules, and their identities, to get shit done. It kickstarted the #MeToo movement, which continues to this day. Mick caught up with them to chat investigative journalism, Weinstein intimidation, loopholes, turncoats, brave-ass women, and where Me Too goes from here. 06 Dec 2017SIM Ep 59 Pod 21: magic, movies and "making luuuurve"01:14:40
Brace yourself Maureen, I'm coming in. Or at least that's what it becomes clear comedian Maureen Younger would love for Outlander's Jamie Fraser to whisper, as team Noonan, Dunleavy and Offord discover while MY and fellow comic Jen Brister (that's right, she of the literally shitty caravan experience) tell them all about what inspires their podcast, Droughtlander. Film buff Yosra Osman discusses the cinematic highs of 2017 with Hannah and Jen, and Fiona Longmuir's talks 20 years of Harry Potter and the enduring power of magic. Also, Sarah's using athlete's foot cream in places it's not meant for, and Dunleavy Does Peter Pan. It's a pure belter. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. 01 Jul 2020SIM Ep 389 Pod 116: shielding, Coming Undone and Olympic mumming01:22:04
Disability activist Gem Turner has been shielding, and she talks to Hannah about what that means, whether she feels ready to go back into the real world and what the last few months have taught her about how this Government views disabled people. Award-winning journalist and editor-in-chief of Empire magazine Terri White chats to Mickey about her beautiful, hard-hitting memoir Coming Undone, an extraordinary book, dealing with poverty, child abuse, alcoholism and mental breakdown.  And time-travelling Jen is here again, catching up with the awesome – in the most literal meaning of the word – Jo Pavey about being an Olympian and keeping kids active during lockdown. Jam-packed? Damn right.  Plus, in Dunleavy Does Disaster, Hannah, Mick and Lucy are stuck in a tunnel with Sylvester Stallone and a plucky band of survivors trying to reach Daylight (and very ungrateful about the vital help from their rat friends). And in the Bush Telegraph, Hannah and Mick are talking Thrones of Labour, CPS failings and Mary Jackson HQ. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/standardissuespodcast. Hosted on Acast. 06 Nov 2024Rated or Dated: Pulp Fiction (1994)00:32:09
One of the “cool” movies of the 1990s, Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece* is a carnival of violence and humour set to a banging soundtrack. It made stars of Samuel L Jackson and Uma Thurman, revitalised the careers of John Travolta and Bruce Willis, and basically gave Tarantino a blank cheque going forward. But did it tickle the pickle of Mick, Hannah and Jen? Or is it all Dick Dale and no trousers?  *Discuss. That’s why we’re here, right? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
15 Nov 2018SIM Ep 175, IMD 2: Fighting for Peace00:25:20
This week we’re doing things a bit differently. We’re always wanging on about how gender inequality is a ballbag for everyone – because it is. Keep your ears peeled for chats with writer Matt Haig, Shadow Health Secretary Jonathan Ashworth MP, writer, performer and campaigner Jordan Stephens, and domestic violence campaigner Luke Hart. In this episode Jen took herself off to North Woolwich to meet Dr Jacob Whittingham-Vigors, Head of Programmes at the Fight For Peace London Academy.
