Fr. Mychal Judge was a hero of 9/11, but he was a hero long before the attacks. He was a well loved AIDs victim advocate, a gay man, a recovering alcoholic, a friend to the homeless, a man with a radical love that often rubbed church officials the wrong way.

Personally, he reminds me of the Catholicism I grew up with - charitable, open, and loving. One day, I pray this man will become a saint, and this episode is my dedication to him, and in hopes of that future cause.

St. John the Baptist is an incredible interesting figure. While there is lore around secret societies that argue his importance, there is also double speak, contradiction and just odd language in the canonical gospels as well. There seems to be an attempt to both play-up St. John, while also downplaying him.

What were the writers of the gospel of St. John hiding? Did he really believe he was the prophet Elijah? Did he have doubts? Was the baptism real?

Mary is the mother of sorrows. 

She knows what it's like to feel hopeless, vengeful, angry, sad, desperate, and overall ... dark. However, when she held her dead son in her arms, she made a promise to protect all of her earthly children from the beyond.

Our Lady of Sorrows is the incarnation of Mary that exorcists use when fighting the demonic. She can be used to bind those out to get you, protect you from evil - but also soften your heart to ensure you can greet others with kindness and authenticity.

Bl. Anne Catherine Emmerich is a mystic, seer, stigmatists and perhaps one of the most influential figures when it comes to Marian visions.

Her visions were largely used for Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ, and a lot of scenes from her visions are repeated often in art, homilies and general legends of Our Lady, Christ and the saints.

When we think of the phrase “Who Am I?” we often think of eastern mysticism, and yet, the concept of the true self is deeply rooted in Christianity and Christian mysticism.

In our second episode on nature mysticism we discuss the effect of the incarnation, and how Christ's arrival was seen as giving new importance to all of creation. Similarly, we discuss the topic of pantheism, animism and panentheism in a Christian context.

St. Joan of Arc was persecuted because she saw gender, God, magic and spirituality in a different way.

Her rebellion, mixed with her supernatural court of angels and saints, alongside her skills on the battlefield made Joan a threat to monarchy of England and of the Catholic Church.

Her magical abilities for prophecy, healing and miracle working makes Joan a beloved Saint by the magic community, as well as spiritual community who also see their spiritual lives was a bit rebellious and different.

In this episode we cover Joan of Arc’s story, her connection with the supernatural as well as how she is worked with in folk magic and catholicism.

Humans were never meant to die - but rather - to live forever in God's garden. Unfortunately, the slanderer deceived humankind into inhabiting the realm of death, and we were cursed with mortality. The death of Christ was not atonement for humans being dirty sinners of an angry God - no - Christ died... to go to hell and defeat Satan.

That way, God now reigns over the underworld, and can return all souls back unto his source.

In this quick bonus episode, we briefly talk about Christ going to hell, what it meant, and why it's important.

St. Benedict is the patron saint of exorcists and is commonly called to dispel dark energy. His mystical amulet can be found on the altars of witches, folk magic practitioners and traditional Catholics.

St. Gemma Galgani is a newer saint, both in history and to me personally. Though, she's easily becoming one of my favorite stigmatists and potentially mystics overall.

Join me as we discuss this great saint, her stigmata and her battles with the devil.

Hell is one of the most weaponized aspects of mainstream Christianity.

However, the concept of an eternal torment is no where to be found in scripture, and even “hell” itself has been a tragic mistranslation. A mistranslation takes away the nuance of what could occur once we die.

In this episode, we discuss what early Christians believed about the afterlife, the concept of salvation, and how many early church fathers, and even modern theologians, believed in a universal reconciliation, not a fiery permanent torture.

The conversation also reframes the theory of Christ's death and even sin as a spiritual blockage - not a cosmic naughty or nice list.

St. John of the Cross is the premiere mystical saint in Catholicism. While we be doing a deep dive on all things mystical in the coming months - I wanted to record this episode on my favorite St. John work as a tribute to his feast day today (12/14).

St. Anthony of the Desert is one of the most interesting saints of all. He is what is known as a "desert father" - and his legend largely involves his time spent meditating on God, as well as his courageous battles against the demonic. His stories have inspired some of the most famous artists of all time, such as Michelangelo and Dali, as well as inspired those who also may want to move into the desert to pray - or those battling demons of their own.

This saint is personally interesting to me, as he's a saint that often hated being asked for things while alive - and in some cultures, he is also seen as a saint to not mess with as a spirit either, but when he does come through for you, he comes through in a very powerful way.

What an underrated Saint! Dismas has everything - a mysterious backstory, a personal revelation with Christ, and also a folk background that includes potions that can protect homes from break-ins.

St. Dismas is often called The Good Thief, he was the man that was crucified next to Christ, and due to his compassion, was invited personally by Jesus into the kingdom.

Dismas is an incredibly powerful Saint ally and intercessor - he can be invoked for protection against theft and crimes, he is also a patron Saint when you feel you are in a hopeless position. However, he is also incredibly symbolic - Jesus invited him into Kingdom due to his compassion and heart, not due to subscribing to a dogma or even being the perfect person. He reconciled his past, and he can also assist us in reconciling with others, and especially reconciling with our own selves.

Following this episode, I will soon be off on a brief hiatus to write my series on the mystics. Thus, I felt it was time to open up about my own experiences with the divine.

This isn't to set myself apart, as I am a broken human like us all - but to showcase my philosophy, of how spirituality should start from the heart, and be an exercise of love, rather than an exercise of logic.

In this reflection, I discuss real experiences I've had in prayer that have shaped my view on God, that has allowed me to go beyond logic, beyond the human, and rest in the mystery.

This meditation centers around a simple but intense repetition of her famous line: Am I not here? I who am your mother? This is combined with rosary work that allows you to enter Her space and lay your problems at Her feet.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of saints have had a devotion to the Christ Child, but today - it seems silly, rather than important.

However, I'd argue this devotion is perfect for those struggling with spiritual or religious trauma. It's also a great topic that uncovers so many areas of cultural Catholicism.

We discuss the Infant of Prague, as well as numerous other well-known Infant Jesus devotions. We also discuss it's mystical components and how it can be applied to your spirituality.

Many of you have requested a pray-along of the rosary in latin. My latin is by no means perfect, but I do find a certain power and sweetness to latin prayers. I also find the latin Ave Marie has a sing-song rhythm to it that makes it flow off the tongue more smoothly than the english Hail Mary.

Did you know we are all called to be cosmic priests?

We are kicking off our series on winter and Christmas time saints with St. Lucy. While she is a beloved saint year-round, she has a special place during the winter months as her feast day is closely affiliated with the winter solstice.

Lucy is a great companion for protection, divination, and more. Her spirit has become so renowned that she is sometimes called Lucy the Strange Being.

We begin today's episode with the story of her escaping a jilted lover, her transition from Lucy to Lucy the Light-Bearer, and finally - we get into some common ways you can incorporate Lucy into your practice.
