26 Jul 2022 | Tennis Scoring is Sequentially Dumb | 00:12:39
You cross home plate in baseball and that's a score. A basket in basketball is a score. But tennis scoring is pretty bonkers: Love, 15, 30, 40, game. We're diving into the history of where "love" comes from in scoring, and trying to determine once and for all where this wacky scoring system came from. We've never done so much research for an episode, so enjoy our hard work! Plus, a concerning tweet about boys from Cristiano Ronaldo and a silly sports cliche about the measurement of sports.
25 Mar 2025 | The Dumbest Elements of March Madness | 00:28:24
The NCAA Tournament has given us plenty of excitement and several close, back-and-forth games. But, as is customary with sports, there are some dumb moments, too. We're exploring those and seeing how those brackets we filled out last episode are doing. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
27 Aug 2024 | Overused Sports Celebrations and Phrases R Uncreatively Dumb | 00:17:27
It’s Joey’s birthday celebration, and he’s already been distressed by a cake promotion at his local grocery store, but we’re powering through! Unfortunately, today’s topic is also powering through sports, and that’s real dumb. We’re seeing just about every player doing the “too small” taunt to opponents. And people are referring to everyone as “him,” or, even worse, saying, “I’m him” after making a play. A person in Joey’s rec league did this. As Sean notes, if you are paying to play in a league, you are, in fact, not him. Plus, Joey sent a sternly worded email that actually got a result! And tell us this Relient K song isn’t a banger from an album with a beautiful punny title. Whether you’re him or not, we love having you aboard! Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
30 Apr 2024 | Eventual Reversals of Dumb Decisions R Gradually Smart | 00:23:15
Reggie Bush won the Heisman Trophy in 2005, but then it was taken away in 2010 because of some minor infractions, especially considering the NIL deals out there today. Well, it took 14 years, but Bush's Heisman Trophy was finally reinstated. Better to fix a dumb thing late than never. Now, maybe we can move on to rectifying some of these vacated seasons. Plus, an NHL rule that should be applied to other sports, road fans overpowering home fans with cheers, and Sean is displeased with the effort of the Dallas Mavericks. Want to do something SUPER COOL? Give us a follow on Instagram or a five-star rating or review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Podchaser. Thank you — you're beautiful.
22 Nov 2022 | NFL Thanksgiving Schedules R Traditionally Dumb | 00:15:49
Thanksgiving is full of fun traditions. Eating copious amounts of [insert your favorite side dish], spending time with family and friends, and tossing the old pigskin around. Sean enjoys watching the Dallas Cowboys during Thanksgiving, but you know what he does not want to watch? The Detroit Lions playing football. Yet they kick off each and every Thanksgiving with a home game. How can we make these Thanksgiving games better? Let's get MORE of the Nickelodeon Slime Monster. But let's also introduce other Nickelodeon games to the mix. Wouldn't you love to see Barry Sanders running down the field while trying to navigate Olmec from Legends of the Hidden Temple or navigate the Agro-Crag from Guts?
25 Jun 2024 | The NBA Draft Being Two Days Is Time-Consumingly Dumb | 00:25:49
The NBA Draft is this week! It’s always been one night for both rounds, but this year, the league is mixing it up with TWO days of the draft. The second day starts at 4 pm ET, which is very early. Plus, our favorite draft cliches and how silly it is that players have to wear the hat of the team that drafted them, even if they’ve already been traded. Oh, and how about Monty Williams making $78 million to win 14 games and then being fired after one season? Brilliant move, truly. But not as brilliant as this Joe Dumars pass or this Javale McGee blooper. Want to send some words of encouragement? Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
12 Jul 2022 | The Baseball Hall of Fame is Eternally Dumb | 00:11:41
At one point in the history of baseball, a lot of people were using steroids. But Hall of Fame voters think some of those players shouldn't be enshrined in Cooperstown. Like Barry Bonds (who hit lots of home runs) or Pete Rose (who bet on his own team). And that rankles Sean's feathers. Joey and Sean also discuss the Louisville Slugger Museum and away messages from the days of AOL Instant Messenger (which we lovingly called AIM, duh). Plus, a perplexing tweet from Ja Morant and a tremendous sports cliche about how good players can be.
19 Jul 2022 | Using Taxpayer Money to Fund New Stadiums Is Financially Dumb | 00:11:34
Sean doesn't know if hell is high, but today's topic pisses him off to high hell. When a team wants to build a new ballpark (and it's often a want, not a need), it turns to its city to help pay for it. The billionaire owners don't pay for it, the hardworking citizens do. That's quite dumb. Joey and Sean also discuss the corporate feel of the new Texas Rangers stadium, plus a terrible night out for a 21-year-old Sean after drinking a ridiculous beverage from a bar. Plus, a tweet that wasn't even good in 2013 and a sports cliche about the types of faces we have.
24 Sep 2024 | Behaviors That Inconvenience Other Fans at a Live Game R Self-Absorbedly Dumb | 00:21:48
Joey has attended MANY baseball games in person over the past month or so. He's noticed a trend at some of these stadiums: People standing in the way, completely unaware of other fans around them. Sean has seating gripes, too. It all boils down to the simple lesson of having just the littlest bit of compassion for your fellow human. Hopefully your teams are still doing well! Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
07 Nov 2023 | All These Silly Complaints R Irritatingly Dumb | 00:27:00
World Series champion Sean is still beaming from the Texas Rangers’ championship, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have gripes. In fact, this whole episode is critical of certain types of complaints. We’re covering quite a bit in this episode. Here’s what people are complaining about: World Series ratings, the NBA in-season tournament, college players being paid, and the Tennessee Titans being distressed about what the University of Houston football team is wearing. Plus, Sean streamed this episode on his Twitch channel! If you feel like this episode would be enhanced by seeing our faces, go head over here.
01 Nov 2022 | Postgame Handshake Lines R Politely Dumb | 00:16:10
Imagine you just played a very tough game and are sore, tired, and heartbroken. BUT FIRST, you have to go stand in a line and shake hands with everyone else on the other team. What a silly practice. And we have ways to liven it up. Also, the owl from the Tootsie Pop commercials is a big ol' cheater when it comes to counting. Plus, Sean discusses what he'd do if he were Vice President of the United States. It involves a lot of pizza. Don't be a hater — follow the show for more madness @sportsrdumb on Instagram.
14 May 2024 | NBA Teams Tanking and Not Winning the Lottery is Satisfyingly Dumb | 00:24:23
The Atlanta Hawks made the play-in tournament this season and looked like a team that was trying for most of the season. They only had a 3% chance of scoring the top pick in the NBA Draft lottery, and then they ended up winning it! Meanwhile, teams that tried to lose to better their odds fell out of the top slots. You love to see it. Plus, memorable moments around the NBA Draft, this Zach Lowe piece explains how the lottery works better than Joey can, and this SB Nation article from a decade ago is a fantastic look at what would happen if the NBA lost all of its talent.
06 Jun 2023 | Fans That Throw Things Onto the Field R Dangerously Dumb | 00:24:03
Picture this: You're watching your favorite sports team play. They're not doing great, but they're trying their best (or maybe they're not). Suddenly, a barrage of beer cans, bottles, and other trash starts raining onto the field. This event isn't some weird global warming phenomenon; rather, it's several fans being dumb and throwing things at the playing surface. We also look at some of the more bizarre traditions in sports, such as Detroit Red Wings fans tossing octopuses onto the ice and Taylor University students remaining completely quiet until their team hits 10 points, then storming the court. Plus, wild death scenes from the Sopranos, whether we're past our prime in rushing the court, and how Joey maybe gave himself a concussion in Prague.
28 Nov 2023 | Overreactions to Clearly Fake Sports Stories R Angrily Dumb | 00:15:41
This show loves your support! Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram, Sean on Twitch, and Joey on Fun Fact Friyay. Across social media, but especially on the site formerly known as Twitter, you’ll see quite a few parody accounts — such as Ballsack Sports — that only exist to share news and stories that aren’t real. These accounts are often very obvious, and yet, many fans still fall for them. And then they rage about these fake stories, which is absurd. Plus, what Sean would taste like if he were a cocktail, which NFL matchup is a President’s favorite, and what a spectacular rant about James Harden by Dallas Mavericks announcer Brian Dameris.
03 Oct 2023 | Obsessing Over Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce Is Dumb in 1989 and Evermore | 00:20:33
NFL fans and Swifties have been crossing paths lately, with Taylor Swift watching Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs. And now everyone is talking about it. Are they just friends? Are they secretly dating? Did she merely want a ticket in a press box? Kelce jersey sales have gone up by 400%, and girlfriends are trolling their boyfriends by saying Swift put Kelce on the map. Surely, we can just let these two live their lives, right? Plus, a story about Joey witnessing stand-up comedy at the Swiss national circus. And Usher's gotta be pretty disappointed that his Super Bowl performance announcement is overshadowed by a potential non-relationship. Joey and Sean also give updates on their rec league games, specifically the light trash-talking elements. And here's this delightful sportsmanship commercial we were talking about. Note: We recorded this episode before Week 4 when the Chiefs played the Jets. So, if there are any new updates in this chaotic story, please fill in the blank (space) for now, and we'll have more updates to come.
13 Feb 2024 | Dumb Super Bowl Observations | 00:33:28
What a thrilling Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers. We’re giving an overview of it all. Top moments from the game! The best (and worst) commercials! That halftime show with roller skates! Plus, the first time Sean cried while watching sports, brutally sobering flag football moments, what constitutes a game-winner in basketball, and Sean’s poor stomach during the Super Bowl party. Want even more good stuff? Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram.
16 Aug 2022 | Fantasy Football Leagues R Disappointingly Dumb | 00:14:26
For about 15 years, Joey played fantasy football. He, fortunately, escaped the rubble a few years back, but Sean is still in the endless cycle of torture. Drafting players is fun. Managing those players throughout the season is HIGHLY frustrating. But boy, it's fun to hear Sean get riled up about it. On the plus side, the rise of fantasy football did give us the excellent Fantasy Files commercials. Here are some of the highlights. We're also covering a silly sports cliche about having the right pieces. And sorry that Sean talks about his fantasy team. We know that's always gross. Just like fantasy football in general.
26 Nov 2024 | Not Honoring Sports Commitments is Selfishly Dumb | 00:32:47
Joey has 10 players on his rec league team, but only four showed up for his most recent game. Where was everyone else? Why do so many people feel okay saying they'll do something—like participate in a league, accompany you to a game, or join a watch party—and then back out with no warning or heads up? These people are missing a common courtesy that should be ingrained in all of us. The Cowboys have had a ton of silly things happen to them over the past couple of weeks. Then, they went out and won perhaps the dumbest game ever. Amazing. We're also sharing a Mike Leach quote that might set the record for number of times using the word "dumb," and we get way too into the intricacies of tuning a guitar. Plus, it's Thanksgiving week, so we're sharing unusual things we're thankful for. Number one on that list? You! Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
23 Apr 2024 | Outrage Over Athlete Salaries Is Fiscally Dumb | 00:26:47
We've got plenty of dumbness in this episode! Joey has a tumultuous experience trying to attend a baseball game in Phoenix. Sean has a $40 margarita at a comedy show. And perhaps most distressingly, people still care far too much about what pro athletes are making. Say it with us: It's not our money. We don't need to worry about it.
16 May 2023 | Supporting a Sorry Franchise is Distressingly Dumb | 00:16:45
We're back in business — and what a bonus, the Texas Rangers are having a surprising renaissance this season! But Sean's fandom isn't nearly what it used to be. This is a very "waxing poetic" episode with a lot of random names from the 90s and 00s, and why meeting your heroes and learning about them off the field can sometimes be a terrible idea. As it turns out, punching a dude in the face is not the best highlight to latch onto for a sports franchise. Here's that Rougned Odor on Jose Bautista punch Sean was talking about. He's right, it is a great photo. And here's Elvis Andrus touching the top of Adrian Beltre's head, among other things. Losing a part of your childhood is definitely sad. But hey, maybe this is a chance to try something new! And that's never a bad thing.
20 Dec 2022 | Bad Weather Football Games R Numbingly Dumb | 00:16:15
It's getting chilly outside, which means it's the perfect time for smash mouth football! But no no — as Sean notes, Smash Mouth is a band, and football is a ball. And never shall the two meet. Bad weather football is silly and often not a reflection of a team's talent level. So why are we using it to decide super important outdoor sporting events? Plus, a sports cliche about fashion wear, and here's that time a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates ground crew got swallowed by a tarp. Stay safe out there. This is also our final episode of 2023! We'll see you in the new year, hopefully with some warmer weather (or at least a heavier jacket). Happy holidays, and may your sports not be too dumb. This episode is presented by the Morning Blitz newsletter. Get the latest updates from the sports world in five minutes or less, delivered straight to your inbox. Sign up here.
11 Feb 2025 | The Dumb and the Intelligent from the Super Bowl | 00:26:44
That Super Bowl sure was something. We're covering Kendrick Lamar's halftime show, the most memorable commercials, and some silly moments from our viewing experiences. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
21 Nov 2023 | These Classic Thanksgiving Foods R Tummy-Turning Dumb | 00:18:39
It’s Thanksgiving here in America, and we’re celebrating by eating copious amounts of food. But Sean has a handful of things that you will not find on his plate. Let’s count ‘em down! Plus, the voodoo of Aaron Rodgers’ achilles injury, what plant-based eggs are made from, the struggle to going to a game live on Thanksgiving, and what if football stadiums had Black Friday sales? And here’s the glorious Wikipedia page for high-fiving. Support the show! Check us out on Instagram, Sean on Twitch, and Joey on Fun Fact Friyay.
12 Apr 2022 | NFL Overtime Rules R Extra Dumb | 00:13:03
During this NFL postseason, the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills played in one of the most entertaining football games we've ever witnessed. Yet the Bills never got a chance to play on offense in overtime, so Josh Allen and co. had to sit on the sidelines as they watched their season end. Enough people complained about this rule that the NFL changed it, but only in certain circumstances. Sean thinks this is an extra dumb rule. Plus, admire a dumb tweet from Skip Bayless, one of our favorite sports cliches about being a world champion, and why people seem to think lakes don't exist in Los Angeles. We've also got an Instagram! Give us a follow here.
28 Jan 2025 | Claims the NFL is Scripted R Conspiratorially Dumb | 00:28:15
The Kansas City Chiefs (and Taylor Swift) are back in the Super Bowl. That must mean the NFL is scripted, right? Plus, Sean gives a postmortem on the latest Cowboys coaching moves. And we reminisce about a handful of players from the mid-2000s. What a ride. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
03 May 2022 | NFL Draft Grades R Hyperbolically Dumb | 00:07:27
How do you assign grades to something that doesn't happen yet? It's a strong question posed by Sean, and one we hope to get to the bottom of during this episode. Plus, a fabulous tweet brain teaser from George Kittle and a silly sports cliche about what things are.
24 Oct 2023 | 6 Dumb Predictions for the NBA Season | 00:23:56
The NBA is back! It officially tips off tonight with the Los Angeles Lakers playing the world-champion Denver Nuggets, while the Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors welcome new players onto their already pretty good rosters. But we don't really care about those games in particular. Instead, we're looking at the season as a whole as we make dumb predictions. Could two players both get ejected in the same game for kicking someone in the crotch? What kind of prop will Patrick Beverley use this year to try and sway an official's call? Which player will lead the league in scoring? We're figuring it all out, and we're doing it in beautifully dumb style. Happy NBA, y'all. Featured references from this episode:
14 Feb 2023 | All-Star Game Snub Complaints R Slam Dunkingly Dumb | 00:16:00
Hey now, you're an All-Star. Smash Mouth knows what's up, but unfortunately, some NBA players will not know what it's like to make the All-Star team. And that gives people plenty of things to complain about. Why do we always need to be outraged about something? Since All-Star Weekend is upon us, we're talking about some of our favorite dunks from the Slam Dunk Contest, both impressive and wacky. We also learn about another popular movie Sean has never seen and we each do terrible, one-word Owen Wilson impressions. Perhaps you can guess what that word is. Plus, here's that charming video we talked about of Scott Rolen telling his parents he made the Hall of Fame. If you enjoyed this episode, we'd love to hear from you! Message the show on @sportsrdumb or drop a review wherever you listened to this podcast. Thanks for listening — you rock. P.S. Happy Valentine's Day, if you also enjoy eating a lot of sugar and/or heart-shaped pizzas.
08 Oct 2024 | Anticipating Good Health at the End of a Season is Medically Dumb | 00:22:43
Sean was very sick the day before we recorded, but he’s thriving now. Surely, he’ll be good for the rest of the year, right? That’s the mindset of many teams, who look ahead and assume everyone will be healthy and at peak performance by the end of the season. That is often wishful thinking. Plus, Joey did a foolish thing after Miami’s wild comeback win over Cal. Don’t be like him. What a wacky weekend of chaotic football and delightful upsets, including one that ended with goalposts in a river 2.5 miles away from the stadium. Nice victory, Vanderbilt! We’ve also great a guy idea for a Halloween episode of The Price Is Right. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
30 Jan 2024 | Complaints About Defense During Historical Scoring Outbursts R Missing the Point Dumb | 00:17:16
In the time it took to read the title of this episode, another NBA player just scored at least 60 points. Rather than celebrating these impressive achievements, many fans are waxing poetic about the good ol' days, back when defense MEANT something, you know? And that's pretty dumb. It's still very hard to score many baskets in a game. Plus, that Peyton Manning and Emmitt Smith Bud Light commercial, coach firings and bats flying on the court, and Sean learns about a new NBA player with a cool nickname and an even cooler Wikipedia photo. Got an idea for a future dumb topic? Send it to us at @sportsrdumb on Instagram!
17 Jan 2023 | Overlooking Historical Performances for Silly Debates Is Ignorantly Dumb | 00:08:09
Luka Doncic became the first player in NBA history to record a triple-double with at least 60 points, 20 rebounds, and 10 assists. But ESPN pundits were talking about whether New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones is a guy the team can rely on. It makes Sean so mad, he's physically sweating! Plus, other ridiculous debates you can have and a silly sports cliche about types of errors.
14 Mar 2023 | People Filling Out Brackets R Overconfidently Dumb | 00:19:19
Joey's favorite time of year is March Madness. The NCAA Tournament, baby! He loves filling out brackets and following along with all of the thrilling chaos. Who will be this year's Cinderella? Can he correctly predict the champion? Will he defeat his smug coworker by selecting the proper 11/6 upset? Meanwhile, Sean HATES the idea of filling out brackets. He hasn't done it for nearly a decade. And he believes people who do it are way too overconfident in their ability, even though they have virtually zero chance of completing a perfect bracket. Regardless of your feelings on brackets, the games themselves are delightful. Sean and I even attended some in-person last year — and Sean saw his uncle being interviewed by a local news team! Wild. As Gus Johnson would say, "This is March Madness!" Here are every school's team sheets from last year. They're certainly confusing, but they're kinda fun to look at! Be sure to follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram for even more stupidity.
15 Mar 2022 | Sports R Dumb Teaser | 00:00:35
Wondering what this wacky show is all about? Here's a quick 30-second teaser—from two guys that really do like sports, despite the name of the podcast.
14 Oct 2024 | Throwing Baseballs Back After Home Runs is Aggressively Dumb | 00:20:40
Picture this: You’re enjoying a nice baseball game, and the best player from the opposing team hits a home run. It’s soaring through the sky and lands directly in your hands. Wow, what a memory you have! Until everyone in your section tries to coerce you into throwing the ball back, because it wasn’t your team that hit the dinger. Plus, Sean and Joey attended the same housewarming party, but only one of them did wine shots at the party and then got a Krabby Patty on the way back. Can you guess who? Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. And check out Burning Years anywhere you’re hearing this podcast. Thanks for listening!
19 Mar 2024 | Celebrating 100 Dumb Episodes with an NCAA Tournament Extravaganza! | 00:50:48
It’s a 100th episode extravaganza! This episode was recorded during Selection Sunday as the NCAA Tournament field was revealed. In addition to a live reaction to the field, we’re counting down our top 10 favorite and least favorite moments from March Madness past and present. Plus, how many college basketball players can Sean name? Check out a few great moments we mention, including Ron Hunter falling off a stool, Texas A&M’s impressive late-game comeback against Northern Iowa, and this beautiful video of the broadcast team calling this bananas Furman play against Virginia. Do you have a favorite March Madness moment? Let us know on Instagram, or drop us a review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
20 Feb 2024 | Dumb Moments from NBA All-Star Weekend | 00:28:05
Another NBA All-Star Weekend has come and gone, and once again, there was plenty of dumb mixed in with the good. We're diving into some of the worst moments, from Micah Parsons caring way too much about the Celebrity Game to Kenny Smith quickly sapping the joy out of a historic three-point contest between Sabrina Ionescu and Stephen Curry. And, as promised, here's Luka Doncic and Nikola Jokic being very cute together on the court.
20 Jun 2023 | Bashing Players for Social Media Clout is Egotistically Dumb | 00:19:43
Zion Williamson and Ja Morant were the top two picks in the 2019 NBA Draft. Huge moments in a player's career. Their 2023s, however, have been less pristine. Ja Morant has had numerous moments with violence and/or guns. Zion Williamson posted a gender reveal party with a woman, and another woman he's involved with has not stopped going off about it. Social media, of course, is having a field day. But we're all focusing on the wrong things. Are these dudes actually okay, or do they need help? And can you imagine what social media would be like with the cocaine-fueled craziness of the 1970s? Plus, abstinent NBA players, cakes shaped like babies, and a sports cliche whose bark is worse than its bite. Also, why are people throwing phones at musicians? Let's be better.
19 Dec 2023 | A Dumb Naughty List and Equally Dumb New Year's Resolutions | 00:36:09
It's that time of year to be making holiday lists, and we've got TWO great lists for you. First, we're going over our 2023 Naughty List to folks who really haven't made the sports world a better place. Then, it's our New Year's resolutions that we absolutely will stick to in 2024. Plus, putting out cookies for Santa, sending risque photos on airplanes, and is Sean finally done with fantasy football? And let's all take a moment to admire the original Detroit Pistons logo. This is our last episode of the year, but head over to Instagram to follow Sports R Dumb for more holiday shenanigans. See you in 2024!
07 May 2024 | Lazy Analyses of Basketball Performances R Half-Heartedly Dumb | 00:19:01
Basketball discourse is so weird. There are constant player comparisons, far too many discussions around legacy, and absurd lists that make no sense. It often turns into lazy discussion that makes for a frustrating experience. Plus, Joey has a disappointing trip to the dentist and a quick nod to Bruins broadcaster Jack Edwards' wonderful maniacal laugh.
30 Jul 2024 | The Good and Dumb from the Paris 2024 Olympics | 00:29:41
The 2024 Olympics are in full swing, and there’s lots to cover! We’re chatting about why winning any medal is an impressive accomplishment, the greatness of sports like rugby and badminton, the fantastic story of the Canadian women’s soccer team, and some of the silliest discourse around various sports and teams. Plus, a tangent into the surprisingly deep meanings behind Hanson's lyrics. Here’s the video Sean and I made many moons ago where we tried to play the 1996 video game Summer Olympic Games on a MacBook emulator. It goes about as well as you’d expect. Go for the gold and help promote the show. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
31 May 2022 | Soccer Offsides Calls R Anatomically Dumb | 00:15:09
Have you ever thought there should be more goals in soccer? Soccer officials sure don't — and they'll call offsides penalties whenever they have a chance, often eliminating a score in the process. Video Assistant Referees (VAR) aren't helping the issue, either. Sean finds that pretty darn dumb. On the plus side, there are no commercial breaks aside from halftime and that is awesome. We also dive back into sports fandom, which we've covered in previous episodes. But there's more sadness to be had. And the Slime Monster is back! Plus, a direct tweet from Mitchell Trubisky, and a silly sports cliche about Z.
07 Dec 2022 | College Football Coach Buyouts R Foolishly Dumb | 00:11:37
There's no better job in the world than being a fired college football coach. Do an average or even a poor job and earn millions of dollars to go away. Meanwhile, let's keep talking about how we can't pay the players on the field. We're talking about some of the more exorbitant examples of coaches who have been fired this season. In a couple of cases, the school administration doing the firing could have saved money simply by waiting a few weeks. Money is wild, y'all. Plus, Sean gets a boost in his karaoke confidence and has wild experiences while bowling for the first time in years and shuffleboarding for the first time in forever. And our sports cliche is quite the brain teaser. What a terrific time!
21 Jun 2022 | Position Players Pitching Is Out of Sorts Dumb | 00:14:19
In baseball, you have pitchers and non-pitchers. Yet in blowout games, we're often seeing those non-pitchers take the mound. What gives? Well, teams are trying to rest their pitching staff, but the results of, say, an outfielder pitching are...typically not great. We're also briefly touching on the 2017 film Going in Style and the chaos of trying to pitch in little league. Plus, a hysterically observant tweet by Jason Concepcion and a silly sports cliche about the amount of time we need to do good work.
15 Apr 2025 | Comparing Records to Players from Previous Eras is Derogatorily Dumb | 00:18:50
Alexander Ovechkin just broke Wayne Gretzky's record for the most goals scored in an NHL career. It's an impressive achievement of both talent and longevity. Yet when you try to give Ovechkin kudos, there's always at least one person who says something like, "Yeah, but...he's still not Gretzky." Why do we need to put someone down? Why can't we just celebrate both players? And here's the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip we reference. What a gem!
08 Apr 2025 | Dumb March Madness Reflections | 00:27:30
The men's and women's NCAA basketball tournaments are in the books! Congratulations to the Florida Gators and UConn Huskies for their respective victories. We're looking back at the championship games, lamenting a few heartbreaks, and sharing our individual one shining moments from March Madness.
19 Apr 2022 | College Basketball Jerseys R Mathematically Dumb | 00:09:53
There's a really odd rule in college basketball that you might not even know about. It involves the jerseys that players wear, and while said rule kind of makes sense, it's still quite silly. Because Joey was the one that first learned about this rule, Sean lets him have the floor to rant. But don't worry, because Sean releases plenty of unhinged frustration during this episode, too. We're also covering some of the classic meals we'd eat after school — Joey's afternoon routine of a bagel with cream cheese and peanut butter was somehow the healthier of the two. Plus, a dumb tweet from Emmanuel Acho and a ridiculous sports cliche about the types of games people should or should not win. And don't forget to follow the show on Instagramfor more shenanigans.
16 Jan 2024 | Playoff Hopes R Eternally Dumb | 00:18:48
Hope springs eternal, but as sports fans know, it typically lets you down. And Sean's Dallas Cowboys let him down in a BIG way. How silly that we fall for this trick every single season when only one team can end as the champion. We also cover Chicago Bulls fans booing former GM Jerry Krause, complete with Stacey King's angry Nationwide ad read and critique of the fans. Plus, Joey tried his hand at pickup basketball, and despite a blister on his pinky toe, he emerged relatively intact! And a new show featuring Rob Lowe that's surprisingly entertaining. P.S. Digging what you hear? Follow the show on Instagram for more goodies.
25 Oct 2022 | Broadcasters Mispronouncing Names R Rudely Dumb | 00:15:58
Do you have a name that people regularly mispronounce or mishear? Somehow, Sean does, despite the very easy spelling of his name. This regularly happens with NFL broadcasters and analysts, who will routinely mispronounce and sometimes even add or eliminate syllables to names. Sean's dad also recently discovered the East/West Bowl sketch from Key and Peele. We wish we could go back in time to the first time we watched that video, because it is truly glorious. Meanwhile, Sean is very busy with his pickleball league. It's not going well. Plus, a silly hockey cliche about leads and we wonder why shrimp cocktails are a delicacy.
04 Jun 2024 | Complaints About Cakewalk Paths to Championships R Bemoaningly Dumb | 00:26:29
The Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks are in the NBA Finals. Congrats to them! Yet, if you listened to some fans, you'd think the Celtics didn't deserve to be here because the teams they faced had key players who were injured. Okay...that's a reward for finishing with the best record of any team during the regular season. Plus, Sean is now in his late 30s—what has he learned along the way? How many different types of cakes has he had during his birthday week? And we wrap up with a deep dive into a song that's nearly 20 years old. Get more shenanigans by following Sports R Dumb on Instagram, or be a gem and leave a kind review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Podchaser.
17 May 2022 | Player Flops R Painfully Dumb | 00:15:50
If you've been keeping an eye on the NBA playoffs, you might have noticed an alarming trend: an increase in flopping. Nobody wants to watch a game with people falling down like dominoes, led by future Hall of Famer Chris Paul. Plus, remember when Chris Rock was randomly at the Dave Chappelle show where the latter comedian got attacked? That was weird. Also, a look at when the ambulance used to run over players in games of Madden (shout out to this wonderful runaway cart ), a geographically absurd tweet from Magic Johnson, and a silly sports cliche about how often we should take things.
28 Mar 2023 | This Entire Dallas Mavericks Season is Jaw-Droppingly Dumb | 00:17:33
Sean has been a lifelong fan of the Dallas Mavericks. And one season after reaching the NBA Western Conference Finals, the Mavericks may not even make the playoffs this year. That's sure frustrating for ol' Seany! Plus, the team doesn't even know whose ball it is and has an inferior mascot compared to the old days. And now their fans have to root for Kyrie Irving? At least he was pretty good in Uncle Drew, though Lisa Leslie and Chris Webber stole the show. Here are some of our talking points from this episode, too:
And, of course, don't forget to follow the show on Instagram!
24 Oct 2023 | EMERGENCY POD! 🚨 Sean's Texas Rangers R Not Dumb | 00:14:30
It's an emergency podcast — against all odds, the Texas Rangers are in the World Series! They won Games 6 and 7 with their backs against the wall, and Sean couldn't be more excited. You want to hear an excited man, don't you? We're also talking about weird airport stories, the fairly obscure The Adventures of Willy Beamish game from the 1990s, and Joey's basketball league got ROWDY tonight. You can also see a cute picture of us recording this podcast at sportsrdumb on Instagram!
18 Jun 2024 | Sports TV Media Rights R Capitalistically Dumb | 00:20:01
When we recorded this, the Dallas Mavericks had just won their last game to stay alive in the NBA Finals. We know that good luck did not continue for Sean—congrats to the Boston Celtics on an NBA-record 18th championship. Anyway, it looks like TNT is going to lose its media rights to broadcast NBA games. And that's not the only TV snafu going on. Have you ever tried to watch a more obscure game? It's rough! Sean's just trying to catch Switzerland vs. Hungary, and Joey's just trying to make jokes like how can they be Hungary when they're right by Turkey and Greece? Got a nice thing to say about the show? Hit us up on Instagram or leave a review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Podchaser.
02 Apr 2024 | The NCAA's Disrespect of Women's College Basketball is Nonsensically Dumb | 00:20:24
The women's NCAA Tournament has had plenty of impressive action, but it's being overshadowed by a lot of dumb things — many of which are the NCAA's own doing. Let's dive in! Plus, a glimpse at the horrific April Fools Day prank we talked about in the intro, the legendary 90s sitcom Step By Step, and personal tales of removing jewelry during basketball games. Digging the show? Give us a follow on Instagram or a kind rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Podchaser.
31 Jan 2023 | Conversations Around the Dallas Cowboys R Rashly Dumb | 00:18:25
Sean's Dallas Cowboys didn't make it past the divisional round during this year's NFL playoffs, but they still had a pretty darn good season. Yet listening to fans and analysts alike, you'd think it was the worst year ever. Sean thinks that's a rash, and thus dumb, reaction. And he doesn't want to hear it about it anymore. Plus, the slime monster, mystery meats, a dissection of the music from the OG Pokemon games—shout out to the S.S. Anne!—and horrific horse stories from both Sean and Joey. Watch out for those wild stallions, y'all. Finally, here's the delightful NFL Mic'd Up Moments video we chat about. Check it out!
10 Jan 2023 | Division Winner Preferential Treatments R Underwhelmingly Dumb | 00:14:54
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished with a SUPER impressive 8-9 record. The Dallas Cowboys were four games ahead of them, ending the season at 12-5. So why in the world does Tampa Bay get to host a playoff game? Simple, because division winners get an automatic home game, regardless of their record. And that's pretty dumb, don't you think? We saw the same thing happen with the MLB playoffs in 2022. What makes this even more baffling is that (some) other leagues have corrected this. We cover an occasion in the NBA where something similar happened. And wouldn't you know it, the league fixed the issue! Plus, our top sports moments from last year—here's Sean's favorite. By the way, here's Joey's book! Give it a read. Or don't, but you'll only be hurting yourself. This episode is presented by the Morning Blitz newsletter. 18 Jul 2023 | All-Star Games R All Over the Map Dumb | 00:20:37
In sports like basketball and football, the annual All-Star Game and Pro Bowl, respectively, are filled with low-effort attempts at defense, with flashiness the main item on the agenda. In the Major Leagues, there's TOO much effort, which makes the All-Star Game feel a bit like every other contest of the 162-game season. Ancillary events can be pretty dumb, too. Julio Rodriguez hit 41 home runs in the first round and didn't end up winning because he hit too many home runs in the first round. Aaron Gordon was a phenomenal dunker in the 2016 Slam Dunk Contest and in subsequent years and still has not won a Dunk Contest. Plus, it's about time for Sean's fantasy football league to start up again. Has he thought enough about his keepers for the upcoming season? He's also got a ringing endorsement for the show Quarterback, which features Patrick Mahomes, Kirk Cousins, and Marcus Mariota. All of whom happen to be quarterbacks — you like that! We also discuss some silly elements of classic video games and Joey shares a devastating story about his time hosting karaoke.
18 Feb 2025 | These Extraneous Activities During NBA All-Star Weekend R Distractingly Dumb | 00:29:08
The NBA hosted its All-Star Weekend and...why are there so many non-basketball things going on? Kevin Hart was roasting players DURING a game. MrBeast was hosting a halftime shootout that seemed wildly forced. A YouTuber named Jesser probably cannot dunk a basketball on a regulation rim, and he was one of the judges of the Slam Dunk Contest! And oh so many commercials and stoppages in play. The Internet was ablaze with criticism, and understandably so. Even some of the players were getting annoyed. That's when you know things are really bad. Also, let's bring back NBA Jam Session! Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
22 Mar 2022 | Taking a Charge is Quite Dumb | 00:12:15
Picture this: You're running or walking briskly, and all of a sudden someone slides in the way from out of nowhere and you run into them. You probably banged knees, or you fell to the ground and it hurt. But as you looked up at the referee next to you? They called an offensive foul. Sean hates this. He thinks charges r dumb, and we're diving into some of our stupidest offensive foul stories, which often end in a white-hot rage similar to how Sean feels about this topic. Plus, a dumb tweet from Skip Bayless and one of our favorite overused sports cliches.
27 Feb 2024 | Chaotic Court Storms R Hive Mind Dumb | 00:18:50
We've seen multiple players get injured across men's and women's college basketball as home crowds storm the court after a victory. Why is it so hard to keep opposing players safe? Plus, analysts making bold predictions with no consequences, live fan gimmicks during hockey games, and this delightful scene from Parks and Rec. Give us a follow on Instagram or a nice review on Apple Podcasts or Spotify. You rock!
26 Mar 2024 | A Salute to Dumb March Madness Moments | 00:24:22
We've reached the Sweet 16 in both the men's and women's tournaments, which means we've had plenty of dumb moments along the way. Here are some of our (least) favorites! Plus, a history of the NCAA Boss Button and Jack Gohlke's low-budget TurboTax NIL deal. Don't forget to follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram, and it would be SO COOL if you left a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Podchaser.
14 Nov 2023 | The Michigan Spying Scandal Details R Secretly Dumb | 00:19:26
Connor Stalions, a man with so-so decision-making but a fantastic name, got caught stealing signs from opposing sidelines. He likely wasn’t the only one involved, but he’s remained stoic and has not snitched. Sean doesn’t like the discourse around this event. Since Connor Stalions is such a delightful moniker, we look at some of our other favorite names from sports past and present. Plus, Joey has a delightful adventure at the coffee shop. And how well does Sean know his Spice Girls and One Direction members? Support the show! Check us out on Instagram or Sean on Twitch.
16 Apr 2024 | Complicated Playoff Scenarios R Pieces of Red String on a Whiteboard Dumb | 00:25:07
This episode starts off HOT, as Joey's rec league featured a fight between teammates — thankfully, not on Joey's team, which is full of kind people. We're exploring the absurdity of fighting in a rec league, but that's not the main focus here. We're also breaking down the silliness of calculating tiebreakers and potential finishes in different sports leagues when all will be sorted out in a day or two. Patience is a virtue, and all. And Sean has a brilliant idea for fixing league drafts. We love hearing from you! Support the show by following us on Instagram or hit up one of our referral links for cash back in your wallet! Who could complain about that?
06 Aug 2024 | Media Questions and Discourse Around the Olympics R Uncreatively Dumb | 00:24:07
The Olympics have been a delight—for the most part. We still have people critiquing athletes like Noah Lyles and suggesting Sha'Carri Richardson should boycott the race she's been training for eight years to run to prove a point about Parisian etiquette. As Simone Biles noted, many people are asking what Olympians do after winning a medal. Maybe those Olympians can enjoy their wildly impressive accomplishments? Here's the fun podcast with American Idol contest Kate Watson that we chat about during the show! Go for the gold and help promote the show. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
05 Jul 2022 | Is Golf A Sport? A Dumb Discussion | 00:13:36
A lot of golfers are defecting from the PGA to LIV, which is backed by Saudi Arabia. It's been a popular topic of discussion among the media, but Sean has a more interesting query: is golf even a sport? Sean doesn't think so. One of his reasons is John Daly, seen here looking like he's having a grand ol' time. Meanwhile, do you know how to escape from an alligator when it's trying to attack you? Plus, a tweet that shows LeBron James has too much time on his hands, and a silly sports cliche about
09 Aug 2022 | Salary Cap Rules R Prohibitively Dumb | 00:13:39
Most sports have salary caps. Though they're designed as a way to "increase parity" across sports, these salary caps really just limit what a player can earn. Sean thinks we should rally together as fans to boycott sports until they get rid of salary caps. This will not happen but it's an admirable thought. Plus, have you ever played the lottery? Wouldn't it have been nice to win a jackpot of $1.34 billion (which turned into $433.7 million after taxes on the lump sum)? Or maybe you'd rather prefer a nice fancy bidet, instead. Sean also shares his grievances with pickleball, while Joey somehow remembers a chaotic ultimate frisbee moment from high school. And of course, a silly sports cliche about when people arrive at a practice facility.
05 Mar 2024 | People Whose Entire Identity Is Hating Other Teams R Unpleasantly Dumb | 00:16:46
We're all about some quality trash talking here, but when it's your whole personality? Oof, it's not a good look. And there are too many people out there hating. You've got plenty of good stuff going on in your life. Don't spend so much time putting down others. Instead, LIFT THEM UP. Speaking of lifting others up, why not lift up your phone and give the show a follow on Instagram or drop a five-star review on Spotify or Apple Podcasts? Thank you for the support!
23 Jul 2024 | Nick Castellanos' Home Run Timing is Impressively Dumb | 00:24:18
We’ve had a lot of major events happening over the past year or so. President Biden just dropped out of the presidential race. Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt. Willie Mays and Queen Elizabeth died. And in all of those instances—and more—Nick Castellanos has hit a home run. Here, have a montage! Also, Sean apologizes for getting a couple of facts wrong, like this latest dinger coming in a losing effort in the bottom of the ninth when it actually happened during the top of the ninth in a Phillies victory. Plus, Team USA basketball is narrowly beating teams in their practice games, Sean is sore from diving and slam dunking at a pool party, and Joey has a cousin in the Olympics! Keep an eye out for Ryan Held in the 4 x 100 men’s swimming freestyle relay. Finally, here’s the clip of James Harden slamming the ball into his face, plus Josh Hart’s delightful reaction. Be a pal and leave us some kind words. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or rate or review the show on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
15 Mar 2022 | Intentional Fouls R Pretty Dumb | 00:10:15
March Madness is right around the corner, and though the NCAA Tournament brings plenty of exciting buzzer beaters, memorable moments, and impressive plays, it also brings something else that's pretty dumb: intentional fouls. Why is it that an intentional foul at any other point of the game penalizes the team that commits the foul, but duringthe end of the game, it's the team being fouled that is at a disadvantage (especially because college teams struggle to shoot free throws)? Sean will break this all down in a way that only he can. Plus, a silly tweet from Magic Johnson. Who do you have winning it all? Besides you for listening to this episode, of course.
11 Oct 2022 | Baseball Update Cut-Ins R Distractingly Dumb | 00:14:45
We watched a chase of history this year as Aaron Judge tried to hit more home runs in a single season than anyone else ever has before...in the American League...or on the New York Yankees. And broadcasts are cutting into other sports to show us live at-bats, which often end in walks or outs. Also, some great reminiscing about the early days of online videos and playing Slingo online. Plus, is the explosion of pickleball a good thing? And a sports cliche about X. We also drop a TON of references in this episode. Watch 'em all here: 😋 The Homestar Runner Malloween commercial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljhh1CUTbUI ⚽️ Dru Yearwood kicking a soccer ball into the stands (Jomboy version): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlIrFR2E-tw 🏀 Paul Pierce throws his headband into the stands and gets it thrown back at him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3xUEaQXlvs
23 May 2023 | The San Antonio Spurs Being Rewarded for a Terrible Season is Seethingly Dumb | 00:20:47
It's Sean's birthday! He's turning 36...is that mid or late 30s? Whatever the case, he's been mad about the San Antonio Spurs for more than half his life. And as a birthday gift, some 20-odd years of rage are all coming out. Plus, Joey shares some relevant stories from his recent trip to Europe, including a run-in at the FIFA Museum in Switzerland. And the Spurs aren't entirely bad. The HEB commercials are great. And remember that time Manu Ginobili caught a live bat during a game? If you enjoyed this episode, you would be a TRUE champion if you shared it with one other person you think would like it. Tell us that you did on @sportsrdumb on Instagram, and we'll give you a shout-out on a future episode!
17 Dec 2024 | The Degradation of Bowl Games Is Progressively Dumb | 00:16:51
Welcome to the last Sports R Dumb of the year! 2024 sure has been something, hasn't it? It's bowl season, and these bowl games aren't what they used to be. The killing of tradition in the name of dollars is dumb! Joey also quizzes Sean on the sponsors and participants of various bowl games. Play along at home and see if you do better than Sean. The bar is pretty low. We'll see you in 2025. Happy holidays!
28 May 2024 | Hyped Up NFL Schedule Releases R Try-Hard Dumb | 00:22:37
Sean is old, and he is FEELING it. And Joey is out of the country! So, we recorded this one well in advance about a topic that was new at the time: the release of the NFL schedule. And the hype around said schedule—four months in advance, no less!—is out of control. How would Sean have announced things if he were in charge? We’re going through the Cowboys schedule one game at a time to find out.
25 Feb 2025 | Annual Sports Video Games with No Gameplay Updates R Money-Grabbingly Dumb | 00:27:20
Sports video game titles get released every year. Sometimes, you have to wonder why you're shelling out another $60 to $80. Is a roster update and nothing else really worth it? Plus, we share some of our favorite modes from video games over the years. Hopefully, some of these take you back to simpler times. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
03 Sep 2024 | Sharing Your Team’s Allegiance On Social Media Comments About Another Team’s Player is Self-Absorbed Dumb | 00:21:07
During terrible tragedies, such as the recent death of Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, people across the Internet offer their condolences. Many of those fans will also share that they’re fans of another team. “As an Islanders fan, this is so sad,” for example. No, folks, as a human being, this is so sad. We don’t need to make it about us. Plus, we talk about The Mole with Anderson Cooper and MadTV. Nothing like reminiscing on shows that have been off the air for approximately 16 to 23 years! And the Buffalo Bills know quite a few obscure NBA players. You love to see it! Note: We recorded this before the Gaudreau tragedy happened, which is why it’s absent from the episode. It’s an awful event. Give your loved ones a hug.
19 Nov 2024 | Dropping the Ball Before Scoring a Touchdown is Bafflingly Dumb | 00:23:40
We're smack dab in the middle of the NFL and college football seasons. Why are we still seeing players drop the ball before they reach the end zone? How has this happened more than once in the history of football? Plus, Joey gets unexpected guests at the house, a fun fact about those tall skeletons you may have seen in people's yards, and a rude trash talker during rec league basketball. You'd do quite the good deed by sharing Sports R Dumb on Instagram or giving the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
27 Jun 2023 | Photoshopped Jerseys and Hypothetical Starting Lineups R Potentially Dumb | 00:16:23
We're in the hottest part of the NBA offseason, with trades and free agents leading to players swapping teams — and jerseys. Sometimes, we'll see a player in a new jersey before a trade is even official, and we'll talk about starting lineups that don't actually exist. It's wild. Plus, a deep dive into the 2014 film Draft Day and a discussion about ridiculous draft night outfits. Who had the better fit between Gradey Dick, Drew Gooden, and Samaki Walker? If you enjoyed this episode, consider leaving a review on Apple Podcasts! We'd really appreciate it, and we'll give you a shout-out in a future episode.
25 Jul 2023 | This Damian Lillard Trade Saga is Demandingly Dumb | 00:12:12
Damian Lillard is arguably the greatest player the Portland Trail Blazers have ever had. But the team wants to head in a new direction, and Lillard has asked for a trade. The twist: He only wants to go to the Miami Heat. No other options. That's led to a month-long impasse where, nearly every day, we get an update that neither side is willing to budge. Oh, really? We're shocked! In the meantime, we see constant media hypotheticals of potential starting lineups, and Twitter artistes Photoshop Lillard into every possible jersey. Did you enjoy this episode? We'd love if you told a friend! Or leave a review on Apple Podcasts and Spotify and use your best complimentary adjectives to describe the show. You rock!
07 Feb 2023 | Timeouts After You Make a Basket R Possessively Dumb | 00:14:57
It's the Super Bowl this week, but we aren't chatting about football. Instead, Sean waxes poetic on an odd rule specific to college basketball. We also do talk a little Super Bowl — like what song will Rihanna kick off the halftime show with? Plus, there are a ton of tangents (largely before we even start talking sports). Friday Night Lights. Video games like Zak McCracken and the Alien Mindbenders. Eating next to celebrities in restaurants. Fitting for such a Super Bowl extravaganza of an episode!
24 Jan 2023 | Overdrawn Retirement Speculations R Unknowingly Dumb | 00:17:42
Sean's been trying to better himself by going to the gym early in the morning. But that means he sees a lot of silly sports conversations, including endless speculation over whether star players will retire at the end of the year. This was happening even with several games left in the season. And so many of them rhyme! This kind of speculation should probably simmer down. Sean also isn't a fan of wondering who will win next year like one week after this year's champion celebrates a title. It's enough to make anyone want to rip their headphones off and throw 'em through a window. Plus, radio analysts thinking they're smarter than professional coaches and a silly sports cliche about how difficult things are.
28 Jun 2022 | Sports Lists R Numerically Dumb | 00:14:43
Sports shows need to fill a lot of airtime, and one great way to do that? With some lists, of course! And Sean thinks it's spectacularly dumb, especially when a top 5 list ends up having a tie and we get six players on it. Then the fans get SO MAD about it. This is just one person's dumb opinion! They're not saying a player is bad because they're not on a list. Meanwhile, why do we mainly do top 5, top 7, top 9, or top 10 lists? Also, isn't Ryan Gosling as Ken pretty fantastic? And a shameless plug for our podcast Parks n Wrecked, which is a great listen. Check it out here! Plus, a friendly thirsty tweet from former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, and a silly sports cliche about where you leave stuff during a game.
28 Feb 2023 | Excessive Fines R Oversized Check Dumb | 00:20:52
Are you feeling FINE today? If so, you just might owe tens of thousands of dollars for doing something in a sporting event. In many cases, the fine is for an extremely niche reason, like kicking or dropping a ball or dancing after a touchdown. Meanwhile, serious things that sometimes are literal criminal activity have a similar fine or no punishment at all. Plus, we dive into some of the weirdest fines you can get in every state, like sleeping in a bakery in Illinois or dying certain animals blue in Kentucky. And we take a walk down memory lane involving $2 bills and the time Joey ended up on a box of Frosted Flakes.
15 Aug 2023 | Conference Realignment Moves R Geographically Dumb | 00:23:52
Sean and Joey are dressed in Christmas colors, even though it's early August. But lamenting about how college football is destroying conferences is fashionable any time of year! The Big Ten has 18 teams in it. The Big 12 has 14 teams. The Atlantic Coast Conference is considering adding schools from the Dallas and San Francisco metro areas. It makes no sense geographically, but it does add sweet sweet dollars to the pockets of conference executives. Unfortunately, it hurts athletes from just about every other sport. Plus, Sean recovers from a bout with Covid (don't worry, he's all good now), we have stylish branded checkbooks, and baseball games are so speedy nowadays, aren't they? By the way, do us a SUPER solid and leave a review wherever you're listening to this podcast. We'll give you ample amounts of praise in a future episode!
10 Sep 2024 | Week 1 of the NFL Was Gloriously Dumb | 00:23:43
The NFL is back! And thankfully, there was no shortage of dumb moments both on and off the field. From Tyreek Hill getting handcuffed on his way to the game to Will Levis's truly baffling interception, we're diving into our favorites. Sean is also free from fantasy football, and he's never been happier! Now he just needs to watch out for giant American flags. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
18 Oct 2022 | Baseball Statistics R Sabermetrically Dumb | 00:19:55
With the baseball playoffs nearly upon us, we've got a special guest on this episode — Haleigh from the OG Parks n Wrecked crew! She joins because she's rankled by how baseball measures player statistics. She believes a home run should be its own category and shouldn't also count as a hit, an RBI, or a run. But what should happen when, say, a ball hits off Jose Canseco's head and goes over the wall? And if that's not enough, Sean and Haleigh are also displeased by the positional scoring system in baseball, such as a 6-4-3 double play. Why is the first baseman number 3, they ask? Shouldn't he be number 1? We're also chatting about bowling and using contraptions to give you an advantage, such as bumpers and those little rollercoaster things you can push the ball off of. We live in wild times. Plus, a silly sports cliche in taking one for the team.
09 Apr 2024 | Running a 10K is Tiringly Dumb (But Totally Worth Doing) | 00:25:09
Sean and Joey ran the Austin American Statesman Capitol 10K event on Sunday. It was quite the time! They share their experiences running the race, notable memories, and what it’s like to see a bright light when your body has given up. It’s less gloomy than that description sounds, we promise. Plus, a small lil’ bit on the women’s and men’s NCAA Tournaments. We miss college basketball already. Want to send some words of encouragement? Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. Thanks for listening!
16 Jul 2024 | Playing Sports in Extreme Heat is Swelteringly Dumb | 00:24:31
We're in the lazy days of summer, which means there isn't a lot of sports news going on. So, let's reminisce about those times when we were kids and played games and practiced when it was well over 90 degrees outside! Plus, stupid rules Joey's high school basketball team had, the ideal temperature for your AC unit, and where the term "the dog days of summer" comes from. Send us some words of encouragement and we’ll cherish them forever. Follow Sports R Dumb on Instagram or give the show a rating or review on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or Goodpods. 13 Dec 2022 | Excessive Sports Sponsorships R Brought To You By Dumb | 00:15:45
Have you ever been watching a sporting event and noticed how every part of the game is sponsored by something? The Vicks VapoRub pregame show is followed by the Under Armour action replay. Then there's the A Charlie Brown Christmas halftime show and the Yellowstone National Park injury report. Wrap it all up with the Sugarhill Gang Rapper's Delight postgame show and you've got yourself a mouthful. Speaking of weird sponsors, Joey reminisces on the time he went to an Amazon Go store and bought a Coca-Cola-flavored coffee, or maybe a coffee-flavored Coca-Cola. Whatever it was, it was bad. Plus, remember this Clear Eyes commercial starring Ben Stein? What a throwback!
11 Apr 2023 | Tanking Your Season is Lazily Dumb | 00:24:23
In American sports, if you lose, you're rewarded with a higher draft pick. That means you'll sometimes see teams intentionally losing—or tanking—at the end of the year. This NBA season, we had the unique scenario where teams could tank to miss the postseason and get a better draft pick, AND other teams could try to lose to get a better matchup in the playoffs. Amazing! Plus, we're walking down Adam Sander's Rotten Tomatoes page, discussing the impracticality of milk mustaches, and dissecting the silliness of talking trash before the ball goes into the hoop. We're also taking a bit of a break while Joey traverses Europe! We'll see you again on May 16 with plenty of other grievances about sports. Until then, keep enjoying everything you watch, and always remember that sports r dumb.
21 May 2024 | Sad Sports Memories Living Rent Free In Our Heads R Reminiscently Dumb | 00:30:23
A little while ago, Joey randomly thought about losing a close basketball game in high school after he hit a game-tying shot. That triggered a drastic ice hockey sad story from Sean. And, of course, there are plenty of pro sports moments that don’t turn out the way we want. These events happened so long ago! Why do disappointing sports memories from the past routinely haunt our dreams? Plus, a look at the opposing teams that have made Sean cry over the years. Bring the tissues for this one!
26 Apr 2022 | College Recruiting Decisions R Fashionably Dumb | 00:19:03
Have you ever struggled when deciding what to wear? College football recruits often do. They have several hats in front of them, yet they never seem to know which one to put on! Sean thinks that’s pretty dumb. We discuss some of the joys and pains of running around tracks and through neighborhoods. We also reminisce on some of our public speaking training. Clearly, it’s paid off with this fabulous podcast. Plus, a look at some of the classic cars from driving school. And do you have a favorite Nickelodeon game show? Finally, a dumb tweet from LeBron James and a silly sports cliche that’s truly out of this world.
31 Oct 2023 | Scary Situations In Sports R Spookily Dumb | 00:20:37
It’s Halloween, which means we’re due for a good ol’ fashioned spooktacular! We’re breaking down the top five situations that scare us in sports. Plus, a breakdown on Halloween candy, a mishap at the Museum of Ice Cream, and the benefits of public transportation in Europe. Here’s the Hawaiian Punch commercial we listen to during the episode.
04 Jul 2023 | Backyard Fireworks R Explosively Dumb | 00:17:57
America is celebrating its 247th birthday today! And as with most Fourth of July celebrations, there are a ton of backyard fireworks going off. That's a great way to injure yourself, disturb others, and ruin the animal ecosystem. Plus, Mel Gibson movies, Bowling for Soup lyrics, and getting dates while buying a mattress. Joey also tells a story about throwing someone out of a bar and ejecting people from sporting events. Meanwhile, Sean learns who Jon Bon Jovi is.
22 Oct 2024 | Blacking Out and Throwing Trash at Live Sporting Events is Riskily Dumb | 00:24:49
It was a busy weekend of dumb moments in sports, but Sean doesn’t remember perhaps the dumbest of them all - by the time Texas Longhorns fans were throwing trash on the football field, he was already blacked out. Oops. We’re also discussing Cheryl Reeve criticizing officiating after her Minnesota Lynx lost to the New York Liberty in the WNBA Finals, why it’s okay to boo football players when they’re not good people, and an awkward moment when someone gets injured during a pickup basketball game. 04 Oct 2022 | Medical Opinions From Non-Doctors R Incorrectly Dumb | 00:18:54
This past week, Tua Tagovaiola suffered a pretty severe head and neck injury (you know, like a concussion). This was five days after he maybe had a concussion in another game. And Twitter had a FIELD day. Sean thinks these types of non-doctors dropping medical insights are wildly out of control. Many people also look at their fantasy teams first, which is dumb. Meanwhile, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel ensured us Tagovaiola is fine because he watched MacGruber on the plane and laughed throughout. We also discuss whether farting on a football field is a common occurrence and the joy of Halloween decorations. Plus, Sean was a key component to his team's hockey league championship! And a silly sports cliche about the way teams play. By the way, if you enjoyed this episode, please share with someone! Word of mouth is super important for a podcast like this that doesn't have a million-dollar budget, and your support means SO MUCH. Thanks for listening and keep being wonderful.
05 Dec 2023 | The College Football Playoff Rankings R Unfairly Dumb | 00:21:09
Sean is thrilled because his Texas Longhorns are in the College Football Playoff. Florida State fans are less than thrilled after their team finished an undefeated season and won't be included in the festivities. Basic math suggests picking from five power conferences to select four teams to represent the nation's best will lead to controversy. Good thing next year will have more teams in the playoff, and surely there won't be any arguments in 2024, right? Plus, a peek inside Joey's Europe trip, fake movie villains, and why everyone likes to blame officials for things. P.S. Don't be afraid to follow the show on Instagram!
06 Sep 2022 | Football Game Lengths R Agonizingly Dumb | 00:19:20
The average football game takes three hours and 23 minutes. Yet only 18 of those minutes contain actual gameplay. That's WILD. And we don't like how long these football games last. There's too much downtime, and far too many commercials. In fact, let's take a commercial right now. Okay, welcome back. We're also talking about painful massages, cupcakes being served at football games, and terribly close flip cup games, Plus, a personal story about Joey's horrific basketball rec league and a sports cliche about things leaving and then returning. And we go on quite the 90s music tangent — who's your favorite member of TLC? How about the Backstreet Boys or *NSYNC? We're chatting through it all and it's magical (and also the reason why this is our longest episode yet). Oh, and Sean has a fantasy football draft today! Follow along with his frustrations over on Instagram.
27 Sep 2022 | Delay of Game Penalties R *Long Pause* Dumb | 00:14:31
In any other sport, if you have the ball in your hand when a clock strikes zero, there's some kind of penalty. In football, the play clock often hits zero but the officials make no call because they are busy looking at the ball, then up at the clock, then back to the player snapping the ball. Luckily, Sean and I have come up with some clever ways to solve this issue that only involves a minor mutiny or amount of electroshock. And you're going to learn a LOT about how the NFL uses RFID technology, and that's a pretty cool thing (all in less than 15 minutes, to boot!). This episode really takes a turn though when Sean talks about a video game that simulated being in an electric chair. Joey has never heard of such a machine, but apparently it's featured in multiple arcades throughout the country. Did you ever play this game? Plus, Sean earns a bronze toilet while playing in his new hockey league, and we discuss a silly sports cliche about when you might answer something.
11 Jul 2023 | Victor Wembanyama's Introduction to the NBA Life Was Pop Star Epic Chorus Dumb | 00:21:19
Victor Wembanyama has a wingspan that goes around the Earth. Yet his security team still found it necessary to backhand national treasure Britney Spears. Then, after a terrible first game, Britney stans had a field day mocking Wemby's struggles on the court. What an introduction to the NBA. Plus, awkward moments in TRL history, how Sean's glorious return to the hockey rink was ambushed by his meal choice before the game, and a cautionary tale about playing Blackjack. Things referenced in this episode:
14 Jan 2025 | The Timing of the Transfer Portal is Frantically Dumb | 00:21:23
Sean has been playing LA Noire, a game that came out nearly 14 years ago but is new to him. He's tussling between believing suspects or accusing them of lies, and it's chaotic all around. But maybe it'll help him forget about how Texas played in the College Football Playoff semifinal. Speaking of chaos, the college football transfer portal is so silly. Players can leave before their bowl games, meaning the teams on the field might not be the actual players who were competing during the year. What kind of sense does that make?
