Peter the father who raised her was also a part of an Evangelical Church as a minister, where many forms of abuse were carried out during her childhood years, making her story come from a very dark place. 28 Jul 2021Episode 40: Another VIC Fertility Clinic to destroy Embryos, are yours safe? Part 201:19:07

Jess and Leroy Natoli met briefly while out one night through a mutual friend, and soon tracked down each other and became officially an item not too soon after, both wanting similar things in life, a mutual goal would be creating a family in the, not near distant future. They began exploring these options that lead them to a Melbourne-based clinic in which they did IVF.

The clinic emailed the donor at his 10-year donating anniversary asking him if he wished to continue to have his sperm and embryos already created to be still be made available, his response in the email was a simple No. The law requires the donor to provide a reason for stopping, in which he hasn't therefore the embryos perhaps technically shouldn't be taken away until he fulfills his requirements, we discuss this and the potential angles in trying to save these embryos from destruction. If Jess and Leroy can't save their own embryos they wish to aspire change so others don't have to go through this.

10 Apr 2023Episode 63: The Spiritual Messiah01:15:55

David Starlyte lives a nomadic lifestyle that currently has him residing in Port Douglas in Far North Queensland. Many would view him as a shaman healer, that focuses on coaching in the arts of soul mentoring and non-duality consciousness healing, he takes me on a spiritual journey in the episode and enlightens me with his views on life, and dissecting our instinctive nature and situations he has been confronted with thus far in his donor pathway to date.

David has also had some clinical experience donating to a lady in Israel and then in around 2016 while he was living in Perth, he visited two separate fertility clinics in the state and donated enough sperm to potentially help 5 families at each clinic, we are led to believe in Australia there are strict monitoring systems in place, yet when we dissect this real-life event, we realize it’s all sugarcoating, and businesses will run as businesses are set up to do and that’s for profit.

27 Jul 2021Episode 39: Another VIC Fertility Clinic to destroy Embryos are yours safe? Part 102:13:38

Lissa Koehler and her ex-partner's first child was born via at-home insemination via a known donor, for a combination of reasons he is no longer an option for future children so they elected to go down the Fertility clinic option. Through an invasive procedure that would involve between30 and 50 internal ultrasounds and other procedures and not to mention extreme medication involved that knocked her around 6 Embryos were the end result, 1 of these embryos resulted in a child, while the rest were stored away to be used at a later date.

Lissa now with her new partner Kariah were considering their options of another baby when suddenly their victorian clinic rings up to let them know that upon contacting their donor on his mandatory 10-year checkup to see if he still wishes for his biological tissue to be used, he has decided to say no once prompted, which has led these embryos down a path of destruction affecting another 5 families in the process.

This interview is deeply personal and touches on an array of topics, the clinic procedures, why the laws need to be reviewed, and what can be done about this, plus many interesting general convos along the way. Lissa is now 40 and will have to go through this process again with eggs that obviously won't be the same quality as they were 5 years ago? This time Lissa's support network is much stronger and we wish them a positive outcome.

04 May 2023Episode 66: The Well-Adjusted 90s Clinic Donor01:20:42

Pete O'Irish from Ohio was your typical American donor-next-door kind of guy. A Grad school student looking for that extra income to score himself some pizza and beer. This very cliche story of coming across a sperm donor advert in a student flyer that lures men in with the promise of anonymity and a 10-family limit was and still is an attractive proposition as a fair trade-off to enhance the quality of life during these tough studying years.\

Everything was going to script until Pete read an article around 2005 predicting anonymity to be dead with new technologies of DNA testing coming through. Lo and behold his father signed up to Ancestry and was tracked down, with the threat of the cat being released out of the bag, Pete spilled his most well-kept secret to his wife that was none the wiser, and from there his thought process evolved, to where he has now become a part of some of these donor-conceived peoples lives to date he has 18 children accounted for and he explains navigating those relationships as everyone has different expectations from each other.

06 Mar 2021Episode 30: Our Donor is Suing the Fertility Clinic01:22:30

Being donor conceived can be challenging in it’s own right. Being able to process your own existence and how you found your place on this Earth quite often after already living many years believing something entirely different can be a bitter pill to swallow. We share the life story of Madi, Robyn, and Allysen and how they became connected, and their donor-conceived journeys to date.

While forming new sibling connections, things were to suddenly change once the donor was finally contacted. Their Donor was formally known to them as “donor 8928” Bryce Cleary wasn’t happy when he found out the clinic OHSU had allegedly lied to him about the number of children that were to be born from his donations and their locations all were meant to be on the east coast. Ultimately none of the current 20 known existing siblings should be alive had the clinic respected this. As a result, a 5.25 Million dollar lawsuit has been launched thrusting everyone into the media spotlight.

09 Jan 2023Episode 58: A River doesn’t just carry water, it carries Life01:12:07

As I am about to embark on my upcoming tour to Adelaide, was important to take in some local knowledge of what to expect and what to do, but also hear a lovely story along the way that shows good things can happen here. South Australia has the unwanted reputation of having the least amount of donors in Australia compared to other states. One couple who managed to buck that trend is Tamara and Brodie who matched with their donor quite easily and successfully conceived their baby "River" first shot.

For them, it all started with the clinic as the first go-to point, before discovering Sperm Donation Australia, and with the consideration of having a wedding and a baby nearly simultaneously, the budget needed to be reeled in. A more natural, less stressful process became the logical choice. We talk about their journey from how they met, deciding on who to carry first, and explaining to a 5-year-old where donor babies come from plus much more in this episode.

27 Dec 2021Episode 45: Donor Child00:58:21

Emma Grønbæk is a Donor Conceived Person (DCP) born in 1996 with the assistance of donor sperm acquired from the Cyros International Sperm Bank in Copenhagen, Denmark. She is now an Author of the book  "Donor Child - A Child of Love". In this episode, we speak to her about her book and her own outlook on what it's like being donor-conceived from a positive perspective.

Emma shares with us that she has no current desire to meet her donor or any potential siblings out there. Also that her parents ignored the doctor's advice at the time to conceal her conception story and how they actually went about it instead. Most DCP live very normal and happy lives, yet most don't feel the need to speak up about it on social media platforms. So it's lovely to hear a very level-headed perspective.

Later in September 2023, she gave birth to a baby boy, however, due to her donor having a negative experience with other recipients and combined with a busy stage of his life he was no longer available to provide a sibling, which led to them back to the drawing board. Having strong family values and after exploring how donor-conceived adults feel it was important for them to find another open and transparent donor. She shares their story on how all this works, as well as some tips on how they conceived first, time both times.

Shannon Louise Ashton was a pioneer for same-sex women who always wanted children but found out along the way she had no desire to be with a man so had to think outside the box. She started her motherhood journey via the QFG in the early 2000s at a time when it was all very taboo. Almost 2 decades on a couple of relationships along the way, she has fulfilled her rainbow tribe of 5 children using the popular choice Surfer donor known as id number 188.

On record, there are 48 children, many still unknown and unaccounted for, with some surprise unexpected encounters across the way like coincidentally one of her children going to the same daycare as another donor sibling. With her oldest child Zac about to reach his adult years, we discuss how they plan to navigate this and the prep talks required.

Shannon has quite the positive outlook in life, but she has had to deal with a few dramas along the way firstly them being given the wrong donor they had asked for, having to join the donor sibling registry and DNA sites in order to find more of her children’s half-siblings and then there are the questions from her children about their donor and wanting to meet him and her having to explain that this is unlikely to happen with the donor, they ended up getting. In her own words “sometimes what’s meant to happen just happens”.

Along the way, he stumbled across the idea of becoming a sperm donor, where he could potentially help a couple of families become parents. 15 Jul 2024Episode 78: When the Donor wants to become the Child's Owner01:00:11

"Lilly" (Alias) in her 30s, joined Sperm Donation Australia in late December 2017, In January 2018 she conceived a child, except her donor was already sourced from a dating app. Her child is now 5 years old and everything was fine up until recently when the donor started displaying mental health issues, and threats were made in regards to wanting to access the child.

This was a difficult and deep podcast to be a part of, as I wanted to explore the story and look for potential warning signs, so future members could potentially identify if there are red flags to look out for, without "Lilly" feeling like it was an attack on her level of judgement. While this could happen to absolutely anyone men, who have no part in the donor community and who have no donor etiquette or other donor children to share a focus on, seem to have the higher risk. In this episode, we explore the scenarios, look into mental health and hope for a positive outcome for her from this situation.

23 Sep 2024Episode 79: Following in My Donor's Footsteps01:40:27

Daniel Bayen 24 an entrepreneur, floats between Germany where his mother lives and California where his donor lives in his 2nd marriage with a couple of younger half-siblings. He grew up with his younger brother raised by a single mother who used the California Cyros Bank. His mother was always honest with his conception. Therefore Daniel is one of the positively Donor Conceived People who can process this as a wonderful experience in life as opposed to those who were lied to and have trouble making the most of their situation from the lies and deceit they had to face. Daniel is part of a growing trend of DCP, who are now following in their donor's footsteps and becoming donors themselves, unlike most people who come from a nuclear family and can't relate to the added bonuses of having such a bigger network (He currently knows of 30 half-siblings). For him the more the merrier and while he is happy with his 30 siblings he sees no harm if he was to have 100 to 500 siblings out there. This podcast shares his story and breaks down the stigmas.
