20 Oct 2022Integrated Bracelets, Mario Kart Tourbillon Watches, Strict NDA’s, And New Releases from Bremont, Tag Heuer, Hublot, Timex, Tissot, Longines, Patek Philippe, And More00:56:10

For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, David is away on a secret trip where he has signed a strict non-disclosure agreement and can’t tell anyone where he is going, so Ariel and Rick are joined by Simon from Escapement24 to talk about all of the new releases from this week in the world of watches. After briefly discussing NDA’s and what type of agreement David might have signed, our trio of hosts turn their attention to integrated bracelet sports watches, and how the widespread popularity of the genre is slightly puzzling given that no one actually wears a metal bracelet watch as their preferred timepiece while playing sports. From there, the conversation shifts to how it seems to be exclusively watches that remain highly desirable when they show heavy signs of age, and how the concept of desirable patina seems to be virtually non-existent within the traditional jewelry industry. Next, we get a bit of last week’s show this week, as we circle back to note that Invicta is actually one of the brands that engrave its name on the side of watch cases, along with mentioning that the recent change in UK legislature that was going to make it an excellent place for Americans to purchase luxury watches has recently been reversed, meaning that there is no reason for us to book a flight to visit the boutique.

The discussion then shifts to all of the new watch releases from this week, starting with the TAG Heuer Formula 1 x Mario Kart Chronograph Tourbillon. After briefly contemplating the type of buyer this watch is intended to target, our hosts get into the details behind how our global economy makes it hard for brands to control their image within specific markets, along with how certain releases are simply intended for particular regions but end up getting seen by a global audience due to how everything is connected. Next, our hosts turn their attention to the new Bremont releases and how the Supernova and its integrated bracelet fit into the rest of the brand’s current lineup, given the radical aesthetic departure it represents from the rest of Bremont’s offerings. After briefly discussing Ariel’s recent SUPERLATIVE podcast interview with watch industry author Pierre-Yves Donzé, our hosts examine the Hublot Big Bang E FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 smartwatch within the context of what responsibilities luxury brands have when it comes to the support of global issues. Originally, the show was supposed to end with reviews of three different chronographs at different price points from Timex, Tissot, and Longies. However, just as our hosts were just about to stop recording, Patek Philippe announced a handful of new watches, including the new Nautilus ref. 5811 in white gold. Consequently, our hosts extend this week's episode by a few minutes to offer their initial thoughts on the next generation of Patek Philippe’s internationally recognizable hype watch.

08 Dec 2022Gaming Rolex's New Pre-Owned Program, Building A Fort Knox For Watches, And The Ascendancy Of Oris00:55:45

For this week's episode of the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, David got lost on the way to his recording studio, so it's just Ariel and Rick---but they're joined by Simon from Escapement24 and Rob Corder of WatchPro! The horological quartet exhaustively unpacks Rolex's pre-owned announcement, lament another massive watch heist, and fret about dropping ceramic watches. Plus, the future of Oris and Chopard's new 5th Avenue boutique!

13 Oct 2022Sleeping With The Enemy And The Oris Bear, The Faux Patina Debate, And New Watches From Seiko And Tag Heuer, Plus The Economics Of The Luxury Watch Industry With Rob Corder From WatchPro00:56:27

For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, our usual trio of hosts, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Rob Corder from WatchPro. To kick off the show, we get a quick discussion about the various gifts that watch companies have given throughout the years, including Rob’s favorite Oris Bear pajamas, and this ultimately leads to the question of what would Ariel do with a life-size stature of the Oris Bear if he were to be gifted one for the holidays. From there, it’s a deep dive into the economic side of the luxury watch industry, and Rob explains which markets are still seeing growth, along with why there will always be differences and lag in the reported figures for Swiss watch exports compared to the actual consumer behavior that can be observed within local markets. The discussion then gets into why the United States has a good chance of being positioned to be the dominant market in the near future, and how some recent changes in legislature might make the UK a great destination for Americans to buy luxury watches.

After wrapping up the conversation about all things related to the business side of the watch industry, our hosts then turn their attention to the ongoing faux patina debate that was recently addressed on the site, and they try to explain why vintage-inspired lume has become such a controversial point within the greater collector and enthusiast community. Next, we learn that Ariel has recently been sleeping with the Apple Watch Series 8 to assess its sleep tracking capabilities, and he reports back on his findings to answer the key question of whether or not Apple’s latest smartwatch actually knows when you are asleep. After briefly discussing press trips and watch events, along with what the actual purpose of them is within the modern watch media industry, it’s time to look at some of the new releases from this past week, including the numerous new watches from Seiko and the limited edition Tag Heuer Carrera x Porsche RS 2.7 watch. After collectively agreeing that Seiko’s pricing structure can be a bit all over the place, and that the brand puts out so many watches that it can actually make choosing one a difficult task, it's a closer look at the Tag Heuer Carrera within the context of automotive culture, and why vintage Porsche is so popular among today’s car collectors. Wrapping up the episode is a quick look ahead to Ariel’s upcoming trip to Italy with Jacob & Co. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of The Godfather, where Rob will also be attending, and Rick brings up the question as to whether or not either of them needs to be worried about waking up with the head of the Oris Bear in their bed.

06 Nov 2022The Breitling Super Chronomat Origins And The Brand’s Commitment To A More Sustainable Future00:35:04

This special episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly is brought to you by Breitling and its Sustainability Mission Report. Earlier this year during Geneva Watch Days 2022, Rick and David got a chance to sit down with Aurelia Figueroa, the Global Head of Sustainability at Breitling to talk about the new Super Chronomat Origins series and Breitling’s industry-leading commitment to a more sustainable future.

While there is quite a lot of talk within the industry about recycled stainless steel, Breitling found that the actual impact of sourcing its steel alloys was relatively insignificant (less than 1%), while the impact of sourcing gold and diamonds was exponentially higher, despite the fact that these materials make up significantly less volume compared to the amount of stainless steel that the brand uses each year. The new Breitling Chronomat Origins is constructed from 100% fully traceable-to-the-origin gold that comes from ethical mines, along with completely sustainable lab-grown diamonds. Additionally, rather than being secretive to try to maintain a manufacturing advantage, Breitling embraces a model of complete supply chain transparency with the Chronomat Origins series and openly discloses its various suppliers as a way to cultivate more sustainable production within both the watch industry and beyond.

During the conversation, Aurelia offers some insight on some of the things that Breitling has recently been doing to promote a more sustainable future, such as the transition to 100% renewable energy and biogas, plus a commitment to producing zero plastic waste. Additionally, she also sheds some light on the brand’s plans to be using 100% ethically sourced, traceable to the origin gold by 2025 and 100% sustainable and fully traceable lab-grown diamonds by 2024. Actions always speak louder than words, and Breitling is actively taking steps towards a completely sustainable production process, with the latest tangible results being the new Super Chronomat Automatic 38 Origins watch that is made entirely from gold and diamonds that are all ethically sourced and fully traceable to their respective sustainable origins.

23 Jun 2022aBlogtoWatch Weekly: Featuring Controversial Collaborations, Excessive Dial Branding, Vacheron Constantin, Vertex, Citizen, Moser, Bulgari, And A Mystery Guest00:56:27

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick and Ariel discuss some of the most noteworthy articles and trending topics from this week on aBlogtoWatch.com. The duo discusses everything from what François-Henry Bennahmias might do with himself next year after he departs from Audemars Piguet, to the greater significance of collaboration watches within the context of the new recrystallized titanium Citizen Satellite GPS Watch produced with the AKUTO-R lunar expedition program and the highly-divisive H. Moser & Cie. Streamliner Chronograph that was created in collaboration with the Los Angeles streetwear brand Undefeated.

This week’s mystery guest is Vertex Watches Founder, Don Cochrane, who stops by the show to chat about the new Vertex M690 AquaLion dive watch. Don is the great-grandson of the brand’s original founder, who revived Vertex in 2016 with the goal of creating high-performing tool watches with a military-inspired design influence. In addition to discussing their thoughts on the latest release from Vertex, Ariel and Rick also cover the widespread practice of excessive branding as it exists throughout much of the watch industry, and briefly try to sort out which luxury watch brands might be in contention for having their names appear the most on a single watch dial.

07 Jul 2022aBlogtoWatch Weekly: Rolex Bubble Finally Bursting? And Reviews From Breitling, Oris, Timex, Girard-Perregaux, Hermes And Guest Host Rob From WatchPro00:58:50

aBlogtoWatch Weekly: New Releases, Rob Corder From Watchpro, And Are Rolex Watches Becoming Available Again?

On this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick and David sit down with Rob Corder, Co-Founder and Managing Editor at Watchpro. As a publication that could best be described as the Wall Street Journal or Financial Times of the watch industry, Watchpro is known for its unique business-oriented perspective on the world of watches. Rob offers his insights on everything from whether or not we are actually seeing an increase in the global supply of Rolex watches, to the greater state of the watch industry as a whole, and which brands are most likely to be impacted by changes in the supply of ‘unicorn models’ that have historically been unavailable at a retail level.

In addition to talking about their predictions regarding the future supply of Rolex watches and how liquidity differs between luxury timepieces and the stock market, the trio also go over some of the latest new watch releases that span everything from five-figure statement pieces like the pink gold Girard-Perregaux Laureato and the Hermès Arceau Le Temps Voyageur to budget-friendly collaboration watches such as the James Brand x Timex Expedition North White and the Oris Aquis New York Harbor Limited Edition. Additionally, with the release of the new colorful time-only Breitling Superocean models that were unveiled earlier this week, Rick admits that he prefers watches with date displays, while David suggests that Rick’s preference may be simply due to the fact that he doesn’t spend enough time lounging at beach-side bars.

14 Jul 2022aBlogtoWatch Weekly: Has Tudor Officially Become A Rolex Homage Brand? And Reviews From Richard Mille, IWC, And anOrdain00:53:59

aBlogtoWatch Weekly: The Scariest Watch Ariel Has Ever Seen, A Record-Breaking Richard Mille, And Has Tudor Officially Become A Rolex Homage Brand?

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David sit down to talk about some of the most noteworthy new releases and trending stories from the greater world of watches. The trio starts the show by talking about a timepiece that has surfaced from a dark corner of history that Ariel describes as the scariest watch he has ever seen, before moving on to collectively speculating about the future of watch prices and retail availability. Rick asks the question of whether or not consumer trends may shift to the point where people are consolidating their collections and only buying grail pieces before the conversation ultimately shifts towards trying to hash out what actually classifies an individual as a watch enthusiast.

While there is no surprise guest on this week’s show, there are plenty of new releases to discuss, and Rick, Ariel, and David kick off the new watch roundup by talking about how the Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari recently claimed the record for the world’s thinnest watch before getting into how anOrdain can keep up with demand for its small-batch enamel dials and whether or not the novelty of having a white ceramic watch like the new IWC “Lake Tahoe” will eventually wear off after several years of ownership. Lastly, no conversation of new releases from this past week would be complete without discussing the new Tudor Ranger, and the trio addresses the question of whether or not the new watch is actually worth all the excitement, and whether or not Tudor has officially become a Rolex homage brand.

Each week the editors of the timepiece-centric publication aBlogtoWatch.com sit down to discuss some of the latest new releases and hottest industry stories from in the aBlogtoWatch Weekly news podcast program. 22 Jul 2022aBlogtoWatch Weekly: Rolex vs. MoonSwatch vs. G-Shock: Which Boutique Says "No" The Most? Plus New Releases From MB&F, Maurice Lacroix, Shinola, and Tissot Featuring Guest Host George Bamford00:58:58

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by guest host George Bamford, founder of Bamford Watch Department. The group starts the show by talking about which boutique employees have it the hardest these days between Rolex, Swatch — and now G-Shock after rowdy crowds at George’s own Bamford x G-Shock launch caused the event to get shut down by local authorities. From there, they pivot to talking about the possible long-term implications of the MoonSwatch on the public’s perception of the Omega Speedmaster before trying to figure out if the Bioceramic used in its construction is up to the task of frequent, long-term use and if should even be called a ceramic at all.

After briefly talking about the continuing equalization of prices on the secondary market, the group switches focus to discussing this week's new watch releases and latest reviews on aBlogtoWatch.com, including David’s analysis of the M.A.D. 1 RED, the new Shinola Mackinac Yacht Watch, and the Maurice Lacroix Aikon #tide Benzilla within the greater context of artist collaboration pieces. In addition to discussing how the 35mm Tissot PRX stacks up to its full-size sibling, the question comes up whether or not there needs to be an HBO television drama about the colorful personalities of the watch industry before the group rounds out the show by trying to come to a consensus about which luxury watch brand name makes the best replacement to shout out instead of a swear word.

28 Jul 2022Rolex To Produce 30% More Watches, Collecting With An Unlimited Budget, Plus Reviews From MB&F, Formex, Raymond Weil, G-Shock, And Zodiac00:59:11

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick and Ariel sit down to talk about some of the latest news stories and releases from the world of watches. The duo kick off the show by talking about how Ariel severely needs an assistant before briefly touching on whether or not the GPHG awards actually mean anything and whether or not Tudor is pushing the boundaries enough with its watch designs given the recent release of the Ranger. From there, the pair dives into talking about Rolex’s brand-new factory, its plans to increase production by 30%, and whether or not this actually means that people will finally start being able to buy the watches that they want from authorized retailers and boutiques.

While there is no surprise guest on this week’s episode, there are plenty of new reviews and watch releases, and Rick and Ariel kick off the roundup by talking about the Formex Reef GMT and Ariel’s hands-on review of the Raymond Weil Freelancer Chronograph 7780 within the context of the new model the brand will be designing in collaboration with the aBlogtoWatch community, which will be drawing its main inspiration from 1980s new-wave synth music. The duo also discusses the new Bamford x G-Shock collaboration and the time when Ariel’s got a chance to see the MB&F Horological Machine 9 Sapphire Vision HM9-SV, along with the new Zodiac Super Sea Wolf “Whitecap” and how the herd mentality of the collecting community can impact the discussions that surround various watches and their respective manufacturers

05 Aug 2022Is Instagram Ruining Watch Collecting? Plus New Watches and Reviews From Tag Heuer, Parmigiani Fleurier, Jaeger LeCoultre, Christopher Ward And Speake-Marin00:59:48

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick, Ariel, and David come together to talk about some of the latest new releases and trending stories from the world of watches. To kick off the show, the trio dives deep into a conversation about Instagram and the greater impact that it has had on watch collecting. The group unanimously acknowledges how it has brought a lot of people together and introduced countless new individuals to the hobby. However, given how ever-changing algorithms are continuously getting in the way of people actually seeing the content they want, the trio then attempts to answer the question as to whether or not Instagram is actually ruining watch collecting for everyone and how the online community can exist without it.

After thoroughly unpacking the issues with Instagram and proposing a few alternate solutions, the conversation then shifts to some of the latest new watch releases and reviews to hit the site this past week. Up first is the Tag Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition within the context of non-traditional dial colors and the value that they offer within someone’s collection. Next is a discussion surrounding the relative value of watches such as the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda GT Chronograph and the Jaeger LeCoultre Polaris Perpetual Calendar, before the trio gets into the new colorful Christopher Ward C63 Sealander watches, and whether or not the industry is now over-saturated with bright dial colors. Lastly, Ariel is still looking for someone to fill the role as his personal assistant, and rounding out this episode is a quick discussion of some of the various applications he has received since recently reposting the job listing.

11 Aug 2022Should Rolex Make A 38mm Submariner? New Watch Reviews From Shinola, Bangalore Watch Company, And G-Shock, Plus A Surprise Interview With Richard Benc From Studio Underd0g00:53:49

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick, Ariel, and David sit down to discuss some of the latest news stories and noteworthy new releases from this week in the world of watches. The trio kicks off the show with a quick discussion about receiving watches in the mail that you completely forgot that you purchased, along with a brief chat about the longest amount of time that any of them have had to wait in order to receive a watch, and how they cope with that anticipation. From there, the conversation then pivots to Hublot and the brand’s rather obvious yet unconventional decision to sponsor the world of soccer, followed by a deep dive into whether or not all watches should be available in multiple different case sizes, so that we can finally put an end to the whole “best watch size” debate.

To kick off the discussion about this week’s new releases, the group first talks about the new Shinola and Lincoln Runwell models within the greater context of watch and car collaboration pieces, while Ariel briefly provides some context for the Lincoln brand itself to two Europeans who aren’t quite as familiar with this decidedly American automotive manufacturer. Following the conversation about cars and watches, the show breaks for a surprise interview with this week’s mystery guest, Richard Benc from Studio Underd0g. After getting to hear the latest updates directly from Richard himself, we then get to hear our trio of host’s thoughts on the latest new release from his brand, which is a mechanical chronograph that draws its aesthetic inspiration from strawberries and cream (yes, the dessert dish). Continuing on with this week’s new watches, our hosts discuss the new Mach 1 Synchro from Bangalore Watch Company that celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the “Suryakiran” Indian Air Force formation aerobatics team, along with the latest limited edition NASA x G-Shock collaboration and heads up about a brand new place in Los Angeles where you can find some of G-Shock’s premium models.

18 Aug 2022Clickbait And Watchmaking With Guest Host Andrew From Watchfinder. Plus Affordable Fun With Seiko And Casio, Along With A Closer Look A Look At The New Seiko Speedtimer And Cartier Pasha Grille00:58:30

In this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is away attending to other business, so Rick and David are joined by guest host Andrew — a.k.a. “The Man With The Hands” from Watchfinder & Co. to talk about the latest news and reviews from this week in the world of watches. To start the show, a quick message from Jake, the aBlogtoWatch Social Media & Community Manager, sets off a discussion about how the ever-changing algorithms are forcing everyone to use “Rolex” in YouTube titles as clickbait, which spirals into a conversation about the psychology behind clickbait itself and how the way we consume video content has changed over the years. To properly measure the effects of clickbait, the trio decides to conduct an experiment using two different titles for this podcast episode, and given how discussing clickbait-worthy topics seems to come naturally to Andrew, you can have fun guessing about which version you're actually seeing.

From there, the conversation gets into Rolex and how the brand became the world’s most famous watchmaker, along with why Andrew thinks Porsche is the car company most like Rolex (see, we told you he naturally talks about clickbait-worthy topics). After discussing the homogenization of people’s preferences in regards to watch collecting, the trio gets into a discussion about affordable GMT watches, the cheapest diamond-set watch available, and the least expensive timepieces in everyone’s collections that receive wear on a regular basis. Finishing up the discussion of new releases and reviews is a conversation about whether or not the removable grill on the latest Cartier Pasha is just a plot to make more money on replacements when customers inevitably lose theirs, followed by a brief discussion about the new Seiko Speedtimer and the brand’s obsession with difficult naming conventions. Lastly, rounding out the show is a brief look forward and what we can expect from both Andrew and Watchfinder & Co. in the near future.

25 Aug 2022185,653,333 Reasons To Listen About The Rolex Crash In China, The Most Uncomfortable Watches Of All Time, A Diamond-Set Digital Casio, Plus A Sneak Peek At The New Christopher Ward C60 Trident Pro 30000:59:13

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Simon from Escapement24, and our quartet of hosts sit down to discuss some of the latest articles and new releases from this week in the world of watches. Last episode, the off-topic question came up about how many whales you could fit inside Wales, and to kick off the show, Matt from the Spirit of Time podcast phones in to inform us that he has done the math, and the country of Wales can fit approximately 185,653,333 blue whales inside of it. After sorting out that important bit of business, the conversion then turns to watches and how the secondary market for Rolex models has been crashing in China, with a 46% drop in price compared to the inflated values from last year. After briefly discussing the concept of a “man drawer” once again and Rick coming to the realization that he doesn’t just have a single drawer allocated to his junk, but rather entire sheds full of it on his farm, our hosts then get into a conversation about the various factors that can make watches uncomfortable to wear, along with the most physically painful watches our hosts have ever experienced.

From there, the discussion shifts to the idea of sustainability within the watch industry and how certain environmentally-friendly buzzwords end up getting co-opted by brands in the name of marketing efforts and corporate greenwashing. Ariel brings up the point that given how little physical material actually goes into the production of watches, it may not be a worthwhile endeavor to pursue more sustainable manufacturing materials, when the entire watch industry itself is based upon the celebration of indulgence rather than outright economy or efficiency. The conversation then takes a quick break for a surprise interview with Mike France from Christopher Ward, who gives us a sneak peek at the brand new C60 Trident Pro 300 and what we can expect from the brand’s latest new model. David’s review of the diamond-set digital watch from Casio is now live on the site, and our hosts briefly discuss the possible motives behind why Casio produced such a model in the first place, before wrapping up the show by talking about some of their favorite discontinued watches and which ones they would like to see make a comeback.

01 Sep 2022Geneva Watch Days: Has Tudor Pulled A MoonSwatch? Plus, Finding New Reasons To Buy Watches, News And Reviews From Oris, Greubel Forsey, MB&F, Maurice Lacroix, Ulysee Nardin, And H. Moser & Cie.00:58:46

For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Rick and David are in Switzerland, recording live from the ground while covering Geneva Watch Days 2022. To kick off the show, they first take a moment to catch up with Ariel and chat with him about his thoughts on why he feels that the western world needs to create new watch-buying rituals and ultimately find new occasions to purchase timepieces for each other, before then briefly discussing why esports might be a good way to reach the next generation of buyers. From there, it’s all about new watch releases, and the trio discusses the brand-new Oris Divers Sixty-Five with the Caliber 400 movement and why it could easily be the only watch a person would ever need. Ariel also takes the opportunity to announce an upcoming event that aBlogtoWatch will be hosting at a local brewery in Los Angeles with Oris on September 6th, 2022, where the Oris Airstream trailer and its showcase of the company’s history and innovation will be presented there (RSVP by emailing rsvp@ablogtowatch.com). The conversation then shifts to the opposite end of the price spectrum and the three hosts talk about ultra-expensive luxury sports watches, and whether or not brands like Greubel Forsey, MB&F, and H. Moser & Cie. are starting to challenge Richard Mille when it comes to creating the go-to sports watch for the mega-wealthy.

After Ariel reveals his personal choice within the mega-expensive sports watch genre, he says goodbye to Rick and David who then head off to a few appointments to catch up with some of the various brands presenting live at Geneva Watch Days. First is a quick chat with the folks at MB&F, who offer some insight into the new Split Escapement EVO watches and reveal a hint about which one of the LAB editions is coming next, along with dropping a few hints about the model including that it won’t be a Split Escapement watch. From there, the duo heads over to speak with Ulysse Nardin about its new gem-set rainbow novelties. Rick and David are both big fans of Ulysse Nardin and rainbow watches, and after having a thoroughly good time checking out the manufacturer’s latest statement-piece releases, the pair head over to Maurice LaCroix to talk about its new Pontos watches, the importance of the Aikon collection, and why its retail partners are still the best way of telling the company’s story and allowing it to connect with its customers. Although Tudor isn’t specifically participating in Geneva Watch Days 2022, the brand still took the opportunity to launch a new watch, so Rick then sits down to talk with Ripley from aBlogtoWatch and Simon from Escapement24 to discuss the surprise release of the Tudor Pelagos 39. While Rick may still not believe that anything under 44mm is even a proper timepiece, the trio all agree that this new 39mm Pelagos is (almost) the model everyone has been asking them to make and that it’s clear that Tudor is listening to its customers.

Each week, the editors of the timepiece enthusiast publication aBlogtoWatch.com come together to discuss some of the latest new releases and hottest industry stories for the aBlogtoWatch Weekly news podcast program. 08 Sep 2022Are Watchmakers Listening To Watch Buyers? Plus New Releases From Tudor, Montblanc, Carl F. Bucherer, And Mr. Jones, Plus A Quick Word From Mrs. aBlogtoWatch Weekly00:55:05

In this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David sit down with Paul (@f1ptb) to discuss some of their favorite new releases from Geneva Watch Days, along with the latest news and reviews from the greater world of watches. To kick off the show, our quartet of hosts briefly discuss the prices of cheeseburgers in Geneva before diving into a conversation about whether or not watch brands are actually listening to the people who buy their products and the overall influence of the collecting community within the industry. The discussion then turns to some of the watches that serve as examples of when brands have given the public more-or-less exactly what it wants, with the new Tudor Pelagos 39 serving as a perfect instance of how a company can look at the data and create a watch that is (almost) exactly like what people have been asking them to make for years.

After getting into the details over whether or not the Tudor Pelagos 39 should even be considered a new watch when it is really more of an extension to the existing range, the show takes a brief moment to listen to a message from Rick’s wife, Mrs. ABlogtoWatch Weekly. During last week’s episode, Ariel brought up the point about how the western world needs to find new occasions to buy watches for each other, and somehow Rick forgot to mention that he and his wife recently took their daughter watch shopping to get her a graduation present. After getting filled in on the experience and learning that Rick’s daughter also has expensive taste when it comes to timepieces, it’s back to new watch releases and discussing a few personal favorites from Geneva Watch Days. We learn that David’s favorite new launch from the show was the Bulgari Octo Finissimo Sejima Special Edition, before our hosts dive into a conversation about the Golden Hour from Mr. Jones Watches, the new Nicolas Rieussec Chronographs from Montblanc, and whether or not Carl F. Bucherer should be considered a retailer brand or watch manufacturer.

15 Sep 2022Is It Ok For Watch Geeks To Like Smart Watches? Apple Watch Ultra, Smartwatches From Tag Heuer, Louis Vuitton, And Sequent. The Credor Eichi II, Why G-Shock Won’t Make A Smartwatch And Poetry00:59:28

The Apple Watch Ultra, New Smartwatches From Tag Heuer, Louis Vuitton, And Sequent, Plus A Look At The Credor Eichi II And Why G-Shock Won’t Make A Smartwatch

In this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Andrew from Watchfinder & Co. for a deep dive into the world of smartwatches. Given the recent release of a new generation of Apple Watches and the massive amount of attention that the Apple Watch Ultra has received from traditional collectors and enthusiasts, our hosts kick off the show by answering the question of whether or not the Apple Watch should even be considered a watch in the first place. From there, the conversation gets into why the new adventure-ready Apple Watch Ultra appeals to many individuals who historically had no interest in traditional smartwatches, along with whether or not its design was influenced by the traditional Swiss timepiece industry. Given its more durable construction and ability to even function as a proper dive computer, our hosts bring up the point as to why many people tend to inherently trust Apple over many traditional watch manufacturers when it comes to things like depth ratings, along with how Apple is able to excel at creating intuitive and easily digestible interfaces.

Although the new generation of Apple Watches is arguably the biggest news from the world of connected devices, it is hardly the only option available within the space, and our quartet of hosts then get into a conversation about some of the other premium smartwatches that are currently available, such as those produced by Tag Heuer and Louis Vuitton. After discussing why these models fill different roles within the greater connected watch landscape, Ariel then offers some insight on why Casio has decided not to pursue smartwatches, despite its G-Shock range being regarded as the go-to digital timepiece for rugged use. After pondering the question of whether or not any wearable connected device will be able to dethrone the Apple Watch at some point in the near future, our hosts move to the complete opposite end of the timepiece spectrum to talk about the ultra-premium Credor Eichi II and its different approach to luxury, before moving back to the topic of connected devices with the unconventional and irreverent Sequent Smart(ass) Watch that was created in collaboration with seconde/seconde/. To wrap up the show, our hosts look at some of the various shortcomings of smartwatches and get into the details of why connected devices such as the Apple Watch aren’t currently entirely solar powered, along with when we might be able to see brands produce models that are able to charge themselves autonomously.

Which Watch Brand Has The Best Ambassadors? Plus In-Depth Reviews Of The Bulgari Octo Finissimo Sejima Edition and New Tag Heuer Formula 1 Watches

For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is on the road with Norqain in Switzerland to cover an exciting upcoming launch, so Rick and David are joined by George Bamford from Bamford Watch Department and Simon from Escapement24. After kicking off the show by discovering that George enjoys roller skating, our hosts briefly discuss the recent funeral of Queen Elizabeth II before diving into a deep conversation about watch companies and their brand ambassadors. After talking about why Roger Federer was such a good ambassador for Rolex and who might be able to fill his shoes, the discussion then shifts to Richard Mille and some of the genius tactics it has used in regard to maximizing the exposure generated by famous people wearing its watches. Once the conversation about brand ambassadors is wrapped, we then get to learn which stainless steel Rolex sports watch Simon recently passed up the opportunity to purchase at retail because he feels that profit-seeking behavior takes the magic out of this hobby, and as he so eloquently put it, “every time somebody buys a watch purely as an investment, a watch fairy dies somewhere.”

From there, our quartet of hosts starts talking about the various watches that they regret passing up purchasing, and we learn that Rick probably should have bought a lot more watches over the course of the last several years. After spending some time dwelling on missed opportunities, it’s an in-depth conversation about the new Bulgari Octo Finissimo Sejima Edition and why this mirror-finished watch is absolutely fantastic, despite also completely failing at the one actual function of a wristwatch, which is telling you the time in an easy and straightforward manner. After our hosts, all agree that the Sejima Edition is the model that officially proves the design of the Octo is iconic, it’s on to a discussion about the new Tag Heuer Formula 1 watches and how the modern range fits into the greater legacy created by the originals. After figuring out which colors are everyone’s favorites, our hosts close out the show by talking a little bit about the Tag Heuer brand itself, along with the overall importance of the Formula 1 collection to the brand outside of watch enthusiast circles.

Too Many Steel Sports Models? What’s The Best Watch Case Material? Plus The Norqain Wild ONE And Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep With Sylvain Berneron from Breitling

For this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, everyone has returned from their recent travels, so it’s back to our usual trio of hosts with Ariel, Rick, and David, who are joined by Sylvain Berneron, the Creative Director at Breitling. To kick off the show, our hosts briefly discuss Ariel’s trip with Norqain and David’s experience at an Omega event last week, where they didn’t show the new Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer but rather only had the novelties that were presented several months ago. From there, it’s a deep dive into stainless steel sports watches as a response to an opinion article written by David, in which he argues that there are simply too many steel sports models when the material itself has inherent shortcomings. Our hosts discuss how the greater meaning of a stainless steel sports watch has changed over the years, along with all of the various pros and cons of the material itself, before Sylvain remarks that stainless steel is a perfectly Swiss material since it’s the perfect compromise between a number of different aesthetic and functional attributes.

After discussing all things related to stainless steel, a question from Rick about strap material choices turns the conversation to titanium. Sylvain offers some insight about the different grades of titanium that are used in watchmaking, how they differ from each other, and why grade 2 is his personal favorite. After discussing two of the most utilitarian metals used in watchmaking, our hosts then take the opportunity to talk about the Norqain Wild ONE, which is a new sports watch that features a case largely not made from metal at all. After breaking down its unique shock-absorbing design and analyzing its placement within the greater industry, our hosts then turn their attention to the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Ultra Deep, and whether or not it is a good thing that it offers an absolutely massive depth rating yet doesn’t look like a piece of highly specialized dive equipment. After Sylvain reveals the specific depth that will more-or-less crush a person and how most of today’s dive watches are already more than capable of surviving it, our hosts wrap up the show by talking about how watches like the Omega Ultra Deep can often serve as ways for brands to showcase their technologies and explore a design language in a manner that often has widespread appeal outside of just the collector and enthusiast space.

06 Oct 2022Pre-Owned Watches Come To Geneva! Plus A G-Shock Factory Restoration Program And New Watches From Omega, Shinola, Hautlence, And More00:53:59

For this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, our usual trio of hosts, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Cam from the TriWatches Podcast. To kick off the show, our hosts discuss how Geneva is finally going to have its first pre-owned luxury watches event, and ponder what the Swiss version of a pre-owned watches show might look like, given Switzerland’s long-standing reluctance to embrace the secondary market. From there, the conversation shifts to the truth behind the decrease in pre-owned luxury watch prices, and how this recent change is only really allocated to the mega-hype watches that were trading hands for values significantly above their original brand new retail prices. Given that an increasing number of manufacturers are entering the pre-on space themselves, our quartet of hosts tries to answer the question as to whether or not there might ever come a time when we see the entire pre-owned luxury watch industry shift towards an in-house format.

After discussing all things related to the pre-owned luxury watch industry, our hosts turn their attention to the new factory restoration program that G-Shock is offering for select vintage collectible models, and how this limited-time program shows a commitment to the brand’s heritage and its dedicated collectors. With the final word said on older watches, Ariel, Rick, David, and Cam turned their attention to new watches, and up first is the all-new Speedmaster X-33 Marstimer from Omega. After discussing whether or not the X-33 platform can still be considered a class-leading astronaut’s tool, our hosts decide to discuss the new Shinola Mechanic watches and whether or not these new models represent a new enthusiast-driven direction for the brand. Closing out this week’s episode is a review of the new Linear Series 1 Tourbillon from Hautlence, and a quick discussion of how this decidedly modern and funky brand fits in with the rest of the various timepieces that occupy a similar space within the industry. As always, Ariel has an exciting upcoming schedule with a dinner for Hublot and a trip to Sicily with Jacob & Co., and there will also be special edition episodes of aBlogtoWatch Weekly coming down the pipeline, with the first one featuring an inside look at Bulgari watches.

27 Oct 2022The Best Rolex Fake Yet? Why All Titanium Isn’t Created Equal Plus What’s Right And Wrong About The New Patek Philippe Watches00:55:59

For this episode ofaBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is still away in Italy with Jacob & Co. so Rick and David are joined by Sylvain from Breitling. To start the show, our trio of hosts get into a deep discussion about all things related to titanium and watchmaking. Given that titanium watches can exist at a remarkably wide range of different prices, Sylvain offers some insight from a manufacturing perspective on what factors can separate expensive titanium watches from affordable ones, and how differences in the production process itself can ultimately influence both the quality of the titanium and the overall watch. After getting into some of the cost premiums associated with titanium, our trio of hosts discuss the fake letter that was allegedly from Rolex, which was recently making headlines and said that production was going to be cut due to the brand’s efforts to help the Swiss government conserve fuel. After breaking down a few of the reasons why this letter is clearly a fake, we briefly get to hear from a listener who is sending his vintage G-Shock into the select restoration program that was discussed on a previous episode of the show, and we will be circling back later with him to learn more about his experience.

Next is an in-depth conversation about the latest new releases from Patek Philippe, and our hosts offer their opinions about three of the most noteworthy new models that recently joined the brand’s catalog. One of the reasons that Patek Philippe stated for discontinuing the reference 5711 Nautilus was that the brand felt it was becoming too associated with that single model. Given that the new reference 5811 is largely the same watch from a visual perspective, except now 1mm larger and crafted from white gold, hosts discuss whether or not the new reference 5811 is essentially Patek Philippe going back on its word in less than a year. From there, our hosts turn their attention to the rainbow gem-set Patek Philippe Aquanaut Chronograph, and what factors might be responsible for it only having 30 meters of water resistance. To wrap up the conversion, it’s a look at Patek Philippe’s new left-handed, Split-Seconds Monopusher Chronograph Perpetual Calendar reference 5373P and whether or not the destro configuration is just Patek Philippe copying Rolex’s green GMT-Master II, or if it was actually something that Patek Philippe had planned before.

03 Nov 2022Should The Rolex Farm-Dweller Be A Thing? Plus A Trio Of New Watches That Make Sounds From Omega, Jacob & Co., And Christopher Ward00:59:51

For this episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is back from his recent trip in Sicily with Jacob & Co., so our trio of usual hosts reunite to talk about the latest news stories and new releases from this week in the world of watches. To start the show, Ariel asks the ever-important question of whether or not anyone other than Rick (and potentially maybe other farmers) is actually legitimately in favor of daylight savings time, and whether or not the industry can just create a watch for those who do prefer it, which will be able to help them keep track of their altered schedules. The Casio G-Shock Plowman and Rolex Farm-Dweller were two of the more promising sounding options for potential watches to fill this category.

Next is a discussion about the various crazy watches that Ariel saw on his recent trip with Jacob & Co. and the type of people who wear them, followed by a quick edition of Good Week/Bad Week, where our hosts aren’t quite sure whether or not it could possibly be taken as a compliment that Rolex was recently was vandalized by activists with orange paint for being emblematic of wealth and success. From here, the conversation turns to the new Omega Speedmaster Chrono Chime and the purpose of this ultra-expensive and complex model within the greater market. Up next, it's a discussion of the new Jacob & Co. Opera “The Godfather” Movie 50th Anniversary Musical Triple-Axis Tourbillon watch that Ariel got to check out while in Italy, along with a brief explanation of the laser engraving technique that he believes will start to make an appearance on other timepieces in the coming years. To close out the conversation, it is an interview with Mike France from Christopher Ward about the new C1 Bel Canto chiming watch, followed by a discussion among our three hosts about how deep the rabbit hole of watches that make noise really goes.

20 Nov 2022Fabrizio Buonamassa Pulls Back The Curtain On Bulgari's Design Process And The Remarkable Octo Finissimo 00:35:13

This special edition of the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast is brought to you by Bulgari, recorded earlier this year at Geneva Watch Days 2022. Rick and David sit down with Fabrizio Buonamassa, Product Creation Executive Director at Bulgari, to discuss how Bulgari is pushing the limits of watch design through cross-cultural collaboration.

Founded in 1884 by Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari, the eponymous Bulgari brand has become synonymous with luxury, with a reputation for stunning jewelry creations and, more recently, exceptional watchmaking. After acquiring the personal brands of Gerald Genta and Daniel Roth in 2000, Bulgari's ascendance in the watch industry was almost guaranteed. Buonamassa joined in 2001, eventually moving into his current role leading the brand's watch design, but it wasn't until 2012---a year after the brand joined the LVMH group---that the Bulgari Octo we know today was introduced. Distinguished by its angular octagonal case, it built off designs from the Gerald Genta brand catalog, and, along with the Serpenticollection, has come to define Bulgari watchmaking. In 2014, though, the brand pushed things further with the Octo Finissimo, an ultrathin hand-wound timepiece that leaned into the original Octo's aesthetic and set the stage for an astonishing string of record-breaking watches and breathtaking collaboration pieces.

In this special episode, Buonamassa builds on the brand's stunning collaborations with Japanese architects Tadao Ando and Kazuyo Sejimato explore how the similarities and differences between Japanese and Italian ideals of design and beauty make for a perfect partnership, and what it's like collaborating with outside designers halfway around the world. Buonamassa goes further, though, musing on the concept of beauty, the emotionality of design, and the challenges and rewards of collaboration. Plus, he compares Italian and Japanese cars, and Rick gets him to reveal his personal design process and his biggest regret. Listen below or on the podcast player of your choice.

27 Nov 2022Bertrand Savary Reveals The Challenges And Rewards Of Being President Of Both Angelus And Arnold & Son 00:46:07

This special edition of the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast is brought to you by Arnold & Son and Angelus. Rick and David sit down with Bertrand Savary, President of both Arnold & Son and Angelus, to talk about what it's like running two very different watch brands in the upper echelons of watchmaking.

While Angelus and Arnold & Son may seem like vastly different brands, the two have quite a lot in common. They both have rich histories and have recently been reestablished: Angelus traces its roots to 1891 and was rebooted in 2015, while Arnold & Son goes back to 1794 and was reborn in 1998; both have been under the Citizen umbrella since 2013 when the Japanese company acquired them as part of its purchase of movement manufacture La Joux-Perret (which produces the movements for both brands), and they both produce exceptional high-end timepieces in limited numbers. As much as they have in common, though, they also differ greatly. Angelus is defined by its stunning use of skeletonization, open-working, and color to put the mechanics of its watches on full display, as exemplified by the Angelus U51 Diver Tourbillon. Arnold & Son, on the other hand, is regarded for its traditionally styled watches with exceptional horological complications and beautiful displays, such as the Arnold & Son Luna Magna. In 2020, Bertrand Savary became President of these two brands under a single roof, executing at the highest levels of watchmaking.

In this special episode, Savary tells us about how these two unique brands fit under and benefit from the Citizen umbrella and what it's like to manage two distinct brands with a single team. Savary gives insight about how and why Angelus was successfully relaunched with an entirely new look, the trajectory of modern watch design, and what's next for these two luxury brands. Plus, he shares his personal preferences for watches and teases an upcoming release. Listen below or on the podcast player of your choice.

This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, it's Ariel who's missing, but David has found his way back to the podcasting booth and rejoins Rick for another raucous chat about the latest in watches. The two are joined by Andrew Morgan from WatchFinder & Co., who immediately disappoints Rick when he shares that he is not a soccer/football fan. The trio dissects the murkiness of calling watches "iconic," has a go at a new brand peddling overpriced watches, and humbly predicts what 2023 may hold. 08 Jan 2023How Ulysse Nardin Shattered The Mold With The Freak00:42:53

This special edition of the aBlogtoWatch Weeklypodcast is brought to you by Ulysse Nardin. Ulysse Nardin is a historic, technologically advanced producer of mechanical luxury watches, headquartered in Le Locle and Neuchatel, Switzerland. The independent watchmaker has made a name for itself through its thousands of award-winning marine chronometers in the past, and through its innovative mechanical watches from the 1980s to date. In 2001, it introduced the Freak, a groundbreaking watch with an orbital movement that laid the groundwork for the unconventional watch designs that are now almost commonplace in the watch industry. Owned by Kering from 2014 until 2022, the brand was recently purchased outright by its management, reemerging as a truly independent brand.

Of course, how could Shakira not come up in a watch podcast, so the guys weigh in on whether they'd buy a Rolex or a Casio if they could only have one or the other. This week on the aBlogtoWatch Weekly podcast, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Pete McConvill of the eponymous YouTube channel! Things start out with Ariel seeming to have broken his own rules and made a list; he's quick to reframe the situation as a simple collection of thoughts, not to the exclusion of other thoughts. The conversation touches on why the current market favors wild colors, the merits of reporting movement accuracy, and superfluous complications (plus David discusses samples that have broken during the review process---yikes!). The group discusses whether Rolex was in the right threatening legal action against a tiny British company making a clock for kids and how two very different brands are both making very large amounts of money. On the flip side, a discussion of brands who aren't spending money on themselves with unsurprisingly mediocre results.

The team dive right in with a discussion of IYKYK watches, and everyone takes issue with the celebration of brands making small changes to existing models and charging an outrageous premium. Then, it's on to another round of Watches and Wonders 2023 prognostication, with three more exhibiting brands. Of course, there's a discussion of new releases and at the top of the pile is a curious piece that looks like a cat. Plus, is Baume and Mercier finally hitting its stride?

02 Mar 2023The Perils Of Collecting Advice, More Watches & Wonders Predictions, The Return Of Daniel Roth, And Is In-House Actually Good For The Watch Industry? 00:57:21

On this week’s episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel, Rick, and David are joined by Sylvain Berneron from Breitling. To kick off the show, it’s a discussion about whether or not watch collecting advice is actually intended to benefit consumers, or if people would just be better off ignoring all of it, and simply buying whatever timepieces they actually enjoy. From there, it’s a discussion of what our hosts think might be unveiled at Watches & Wonders Geneva 2023 from Parmigiani Fleurier, Roger Dubuis, A. Lange Söhne, IWC, Vacheron Constantin, Montblanc, and more. The conversation then turns to whether or not having everything produced in-house is actually good for the greater watch industry, before wrapping up the discussion by talking about the return of Daniel Roth under LVMH, and what we might expect from the brand in the future.

09 Mar 2023ChatGPT Dropships A Microbrand Watch, Failing To Predict The MoonSwatch Moonshine Gold, And What To Expect At Watches And Wonders01:00:39

On this week’s episode of aBlogtoWatch Weekly, Ariel is trapped in an airplane over the ocean, so Rick and David are joined once again by Alex from Fifth Wrist Radio. The gents get cracking with a discussion of Jake's recent article on microbrands, finally putting to bed the debate over how to define the word! An hour or so before it was released, the team makes predictions about what the MoonSwatch Moonshine Gold will be, and then follow that up with their reactions to what it actually is. Spoiler alert: they're disappointed! Then, Rick is joined for an interview by Matthieu Humair, the man at the helm of Watches and Wonders, to discuss the upcoming show and what to expect this year. Plus, a few friends of the show chime in with their thoughts on the new MoonSwatch!
