Sam Soholt is a hunter and all around outdoorsman known mostly for his extensive work in promoting conservation of wildlife, wildlife habitat, and several reputable conservation organizations. In this episode, we talk about his most current program, Stamp It Forward, designed to spread awareness about the Federal Duck Stamp and raise money for waterfowl and wetland conservation as well. Sam always makes for a fun conversation so don't miss it! 

After somewhere in the double digit number of days spent in Iowa, we are back to discuss the adventure so far, in full detail. Among subjects of discussion are fighting a giant storm front that blew through the midwest, How bucks react to different calls, Being able to watch deer react to calling, the difference between thinking a deer is mature and knowing a deer is mature, changing our views on passing up bucks, and getting "back in the saddle" so to speak. I don't think there is a piece of hunting clothing that gets more thought out and loaded-down, than a turkey vest. Every turkey hunter is different. Every turkey hunter seems to have that one thing that they just cannot go into the turkey woods without, but one way or the other, every single one of those vest pockets tends to end up filled. So the question is, what do you carry? We break down all of our turkey gear that we walk into the woods with; calls, binoculars, snacks, decoys, and everything in between. 

The Hunting Public is arguably the most exciting thing happening in the hunting video world right now, and they have recently taken the excitement factor even farther by bow hunting off the ground. This week we are diving in deep to this subject with THP's own, Zach Ferenbaugh, who has made the decision to hunt exclusively from the ground this season. We cover tactics, how he picks areas to setup, the contrast between ground hunting and tree stand hunting, as well as the new challenges that come along with it! 

Food plot are consistently one of the hottest topics in the whitetail hunting world. What do I plant? When do I plant? How do I plant? These are just a few of the hundreds of questions that come along with the subject. This week, we take the subject and dissect it from one end to the other, in attempts to leave no stone unturned.

Troy and I found ourselves sitting inside the Kudzu Bluff camp house watching the rain and discussing the final week of the 2020/2021 deer season. Lessons learned, questions asked, and the little planning we have left to do for these final few days to be spent in tree stands and Double Bulls. We might have even slipped an old turkey story or two in there because we can't help but be thinking about spring already. 

This episode is bittersweet. We discuss the ending of the Mississippi turkeys season, as well as our latest trip to Iowa. The midwest has becoming a team favorite in the past few years. The amount of turkeys we're able to see and hear is nothing short of remarkable. This year's trip came with a little bit of twist, with Jordan drawing a muzzleloading shotgun tag. As always, a huge thanks to our friend Tommy Nails with Whiskey Ridge Hunts for putting up with us and giving us a great time! 

We had never seen a buck with a neck so bruised, cut, and scarred up from fighting as the one we finished off the trip to Swamp Donkey with. It really was a fitting climax to an awesome time at an amazing place. There's just so much to be said about the Mississippi River. There's a deeper reason why it feels so much like home to us. In this episode, we discuss the rest of our trip there, as well as a rare disagreement about what the wildlife and hunting atmosphere was like in several years ago. Not to mention, a few funny duck hunting and deer hunting stories you won't want to miss.

Jordan and I decided to go back over some of the previous hunting seasons and pick out the most embarrassing/funny stories that never quite made it to video. Some of these things happened when the camera wasn't running, some of them got lost in the editing process, and some of them were just so embarrassing at the time that we just didn't want anyone to know what happened. Deer season is officially over for us, so we have officially shifted gears towards spring turkey hunting. Join us for this episode as we relive past hunts, talk about plans for this spring, the upcoming NWTF convention, favorite regions for hunting turkeys, and how excited we are to finally be getting back to chasing gobbling turkeys!

Brad and I are at the tail end of an archery hunt in Kansas and facing adverse conditions. We talk about deer activity, moving stands, how to deal with locked down bucks, calling tactics, and the best ways to manage time spent in the stand. 

We are one week into October. The weather has been warm, the rain has been scarce, and the deer reports have been few. However, we have been making the most of our time between finishing up food plot projects, staying sharp on archery, making plans for an unorthodox deer hunt, and more. One of the most common requested topics that we get is how to manage a property for turkeys. What can you practically do to make a place hold more turkeys, to have better turkey hunting opportunities? I sat down with Brad Farris and Chipper Gibbes who both have had endless amounts of first-hand experience with this very subject. Cottonmouth in January tends to be a happening place. This year, however, is a little unorthodox. The Deer movement is at a low, but the ducks are here in high numbers. We talk about hunting plans for the rest of the month. We also dive fully into the subject of trash ducks. Where did this term come from, and why we so strongly disagree with it.

One way to beat the heat and boredom that can sometimes set in during the summer months is to hit the water. Jordan and I  collectively regroup after a weekend of fishing in the gulf; discussing things such as shark phobia, wade fishing, stingrays cruising by your ankles, and sight fishing triple tails. Most importantly however, we talk about a upcoming fishing trip to South Louisiana with Jimmy and my dad.

Last week Lake, Jordan, and Brad had an encounter with a timber rattlesnake in the middle of the woods. the situation resulted in a quick iPhone video of the snake and the guys explaining that they don't kill snakes when they stumble up on them in the woods. After sharing this on our social media, we stirred up an unintentional firestorm of comments, arguments, and heated debates on whether or not the snake should've killed. That what led us to contacting Terry Vandeventer, who is a herpetologist and one of the most knowledgable and outspoken educators on the subject of snakes.

Any turkey hunter will tell you that every turkey they get is special but none captures the heart quite like the first. In this episode I get to share in telling the very special story of my wife's first turkey hunt. As every turkey hunting story should, it's full of unexpected twists and turns.

Adam Butler has been a wildlife biologist at the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries and Parks focused on wild turkeys since 2008. He has been the wild turkey program coordinator for the state since 2018. In his duration spent in these roles he spent vast amounts of time in the field, researching and studying wild turkeys. He's seen a lot, he's learned a lot, he's watched research change and update. We will make a bet with you that you can't go through this entire episode without learning at least one fun-fact you were unaware of! He also gives us some very interesting insight to how conservation is funded. Check it out!

Jordan and I sit discuss the difference seen between deer and rutting activity between Cottonmouth and Togo Island over the past two weeks. We dissect different hunts, talk about why we haven't been seeing many deer in the food plots, the difference between a young buck tending a doe vs an old buck. we are on the final piece of this quail in the southeast series. this is it. the last piece of the puzzle. the crossing of the finish line. the light at the end of the bobwhite tunnel. and I sincerely hope that you’ve enjoyed this as much as I have- quite frankly this is the most time and energy I’ve ever put into one topic and it’s been completely worth it. So let’s end strong, shall we? Last week we focused heavily on learning why or the many why’s I should probably say that caused us to lose our quail populations. We heard from subject experts Dr. Mark Mcconnel and Quail forever biologist john mark Curtis. they taught us more about quail habitat needs and the changes in our current landscape that gave us a better understanding as to why quail simply cannot exist here like they did in the past. This week is all about the present and the future. I think both are important to think about. This week we’ll hear from more subject experts to explain those to us and let us know how much, if any real hope there is for us to ever have a healthy population of quail again. and maybe, just maybe will hear just a little bit more from our dear friend, Jimmy Bryan. Kicking us off is Dr. James Martin- Dr. Martin is a wildlife professor at UGA- and was described to me by many as “The guy” when it comes to quail and quail research- I believe the most common sentiment was- if you’re gonna talk about quail then you have to talk to James Martin- so obviously I obliged-We start the conversation with personal story from Dr. Martin, as to how he became to be so interested and invested in quail.   

The latter half of our trip to South Florida turned out to be just as productive as the first half! We then headed back west to our home state of Mississippi, just in time for the season opener! In this episode, we talk about some of things we do to find success in the earliest points of the season. 

There is only one time of year where the stars align in such a way that we are able to have a big social gathering, go on a hunt, watch college football, and celebrate the kick-off of fall hunting seasons. The opening day of dove season in the southeast is arguably most popular and most participated in hunt across the whole region. In this conversation we dive into telling some of our most interesting stories from the dove field- some are good, all are entertaining, and some are just a good reminder to be safe while hunting. 

After the first full-hunting week at Kudzu Bluff we have hit another problem. After an unexpected, positive Covid-19 test, Jordan is stuck at on quarantine until further notice. Leaving the rest of us up at the bluffs one team member down, and Jordan left to his own devices. Other subjects covered include: the signs of rut kicking off at the new camp, Brad Killing his first deer of the year, Lake having a shooter buck get past him, and poor Jimmy rolling into camp after the activity had slowed down.

We are here to tell you, that Swamp Donkey is truly one of the most incredible places that we have ever experienced. We are 2 1/2 days into our trip down on the Mississippi River and cannot wait to fill you in on everything that has taken place. Don't miss it! 

We drove so far south in the state of Louisiana that the world stopped and the water started. We spent a full day in the marshes, trying our best to catch speckled trout, red fish, and anything else that we could get to bite. It was an incredible day of fishing thanks to our friend, Travis Lovell, of Reelin Good Charters. Travis has spent his entire life fishing in the bayous of Southern Louisiana, so to say he was able to give us an insightful conversation about how to successfully fish that area would be an understatement. 

Turkey hunting when done correctly, and ethically is one the best and most gratifying pastimes we have the privelege of taking part in. It's a challenging and respectful pursuit that makes us better hunters and better woodsman. It drives us to be better conservationist and stewards of the natural resources we've been given to manage. In this episode we discuss, what we perceive to be, one of the biggest threats to turkey hunting and what we all can do to change that. 

Lake and Jordan discuss their two most recent hunting trips. Jordan took to the Midwest for highly sought after whitetail rut. Lake headed to the North woods for ruffed grouse, pheasant, and a chance to run his dog. Thankfully, both were successful and came back with stories to tell! 

We’ve got one more turkey trip up our sleeve to finish off the spring and we also have some new territory to explore as we start to wrap our minds around what deer season prep is going to look like over the summer months!

The team has fully returned from elk season and has managed to do so in one piece! We sit down to discuss, in further detail, the remaining untold stories from elk country. Among these stories, include tales of bear spray, bull elk at less than 10 yards, trying to hunt around recreational campers, and the impressive hiking abilities of Wilbur Primos. Lastly, we look ahead to the upcoming days at Kudzu bluff as we prepare for the quickly approaching deer season. 

The whole team is out elk hunting. All of us are scattered across New Mexico and Arizona. In this episode, I do my best to give a detailed update on everything that has taken place so far. There's been some close calls, some bad decisions, scattered success, and several lessons learned. Enjoy!

Today Jordan and Lake are discussing the ever important subject of stand access. It is not overstating to say that this can easily make or break a hunt, and it is absolutely crucial to finding consistent success. So we do our best to cover the topic in depth. We talk with Anthony Ballard, the Black Bear Program Coordinator in the state of Mississippi about the status of black bears in the state. We learn about the history of black bears in the state, their general life cycle and ecology, and also what types of research has been done along with what is currently ongoing. In this episode we try to tackle everything that's associated with black bears- the good, the bad, and the ugly. The hope is that if you listen to this episode from start to finish, you will be left with a better understanding and appreciation of the animal, as well as an understanding to why it's so important that we continue to work hard to restore them. 

Brad Farris and Chipper Gibbes are two of the most knowledgeable people I know in the world of managing a property for hunting. In this episode we discuss topics of prescribed fire in the fall, a rare bobwhite quail sighting in central Mississippi, the effect of native browse on deer herds, small property management tips, and much more! 

For the next few weeks we are going to be discussing a single subject in a more in depth manner than we have ever done in the history of this podcast.but First, let me pose a few questions that may make you think. Right now, while your listening to this podcast, whether you’re in driving down the road, sitting at your desk, got your headphones on at the gym- wherever you are- take a second to think about your favorite game species- this could be your favorite animal to hunt, your favorite animal to encounter in the woods, whatever. think about that animal and then think about why that animal is your favorite. 

Maybe you had a really memorable bow hunt for a whitetail buck that just has always stuck with you. Maybe it was duck hunt on picture perfect day with good buddies, and number of ducks that came in matched the amount of laughs and stories that were shared in the blind that day. Maybe It was your first turkey hunt with your dad.  Whatever that reason may be, I think we could all agree, as outdoors men and women that the animals we pursue mean something to us. something that transcends a single hunt for that animal. They mean so much to us that we form conservation organizations around them to ensure they’re preservation. We hang pictures of them in our house. We talk about them nonstop with our friends. and historically, hunter’s and anglers go above and beyond to protect these animals and the places they live by prettty much whatever means neccessary.  That’s why, I was hit with a strong dillemma back in 2016. A good friend of mine introduced to me to upland bird hunting. I’ll never forget the first time I saw a pointing dog lock up on covey quail, followed up a flush of what was at least a dozen birds that were all but under my feet. After the shotgun blasts and the retrieval of the birds, I stood there in awe and completely hooked by this new type of hunting.  Imagine the dissapointment when I realized that at one point, we had a huge population of quail at home in southeast. It was right around that time my wheels started to spin.  where did all of them go? How many quail were there actually? Can we get them back? That’s where we pick up today.

Prescribed fire has been a known management tool for wild turkeys. In this episode, joined by expert on the subject, Marcus Lashley. we take a deep dive into this topic; covering the benefits, timing, and even the breaking of some old beliefs that may not be true. 

We are a little over a week into the Mississippi turkey season but it feels like we have been hunting for a month. We have been far from short on action so we have a pile of stories to tell. Jimmy Primos is no stranger to a bull elk. He's been doing it ever since the Primos team started getting into elk hunting. However, up until this past September, he had never elk hunted with archery equipment. For those of you out there that have tried your hand at bow hunting elk before, you know it's no easy task. Well, imagine trying it for the first time at 73 years old. What an incredible adventure; a story of hunting in its purest form, and taking the highs and lows that it elk country offers in stride. This podcast is being released on Monday, July 26, 2021, a day before the episode about this hunt airs on outdoor channel.

So far at Cottonmouth we have pretty much lost all of our property in LA, the MS portion is cutoff unless you use a boat, and we are days away from the season shutting down in Arkansas. We have one afternoon left to hunt before we have to pack up and head to higher ground. Fannye was a Mississippi native born in the late 1800s and dedicated her entire life to the natural resources of Mississippi. She is truly one of the most impactful conservationists this state has ever seen. If you have ever hunted, fished, camped, hiked, or enjoyed the natural resources of the Magnolia state, you owe this woman a debt of gratitude.

One undeniable fact in the current culture of turkey hunting is the popularity, or lack there of, in hunting on public land. Now, Jordan and I would never dare to claim expertise in this subject, but we have spent an awful lot of time kick around out there in the government woods. In this episode we take a look at some quick and practical tricks we have learned, as well as some very important topics on public land etiquette and how we think they should be handled. As always, this spring episode is capped with a turkey hunting story. Check it out! 

Part of what makes turkey hunting so worthy of our obsession is the extreme highs and extreme lows that it offers. There's no in between. You're either on top of a mountain after a few great hunts, or fighting frustration because you just can't seem to make it all come together. We experience an emotional turkey roller coaster this week, and are luckily still here to tell the tale. We have missed turkeys, spooked turkeys, and finally a few killed turkeys. What's most important, however, is what we can take away from all these hunts (failed hunts included) to make us more successful in the future.

Corporal Bradley Starling is an MDWFP (Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries & Parks) officer and is part of their K-9 unit. Back in July, He and his K-9, Charlie were able to successfully track and safely recover three young children that had gone missing in Monroe county, Mississippi. Both of them were later awarded a medal of valor for their efforts.

Lake talks with Professor Mike Chamberlain about the potential implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic on wild turkey populations, especially in the Southeast. It's no secret that all of us here love turkey hunting. So naturally, we want do our best to ensure the availability of good turkey hunting in the future. 

I had the unique opportunity to spend a duck hunting morning with my good friend, B.C Rogers, of Wren & Ivy. B.C is one of the most duck hunting-crazed people that I have ever been around, so I thought would be the perfect chance to have a conversation about it. Subjects discussed include; getting ducks to finish on foggy mornings, the correct way to pronounce "6pointszn", measuring success in a social media-driven society, and much more. 

We are back after our first full week back at Kudzu Bluff, and it was all about focussing on the small victories (emphasis on small). We learned that we aren't very good mechanics, and that a can of WD40 is worth its weight in gold. Holy smokes it's October! Deer season is officially here and we couldn't be more excited about it. In the first part of this episode, you'll be treated to a recording of us doing a little "in-the-field experimentation" as we shoot a an arrow at an elk scapula to see what kind of penetration we get with an very popular expandable broad head. The results may surprise you. We also discuss the most recent elk trip, Jordan's update from the Arkansas waterfowl project, plans for the deer season, this past weekend's public field day at Leaf River WMA, and the positive responses to the Dig Deep Episodes. 

 

 

Archery season is virtually here, and it's past time to start getting ready. I think all of us that bow hunt can agree that getting out and shooting your bow is one of the most fun and necessary things to do to get prepared. that is, unless you have target panic. This summer, I had the worst flair up of target panic that I have ever had in my life. It got so bad that I even had thoughts of canceling some upcoming hunts. Thankfully, I was able to find the resources necessary to conquer it. Shot IQ with Joel Turner is the real deal, trust me on that one. We recorded this in the middle of preparing for our upcoming trip to Southeast Iowa. It's no secret to any deer hunter that area of the country is known for intense rut activity, calling deer, and most everything else a bow hunter could dream of. We decided to talk a little a bit about Jordan's excitement for a tag he's waited 5 years to draw, as well as dive into subjects that we tend to get questions about a lot. timing your calling, what sounds to make and when, why we decide to call certain ways. We also dive into what we think are some of the most common misconceptions about calling in deer. 

Jordan recently returned from a two-state deer hunting trip to Missouri and Kansas where he managed to kill two bucks in back-to-back days!! crazy, right!? Believe me, we know he should be buying some lottery tickets. We go into that hunting story in great detail, as well as a habitat segment about waterfowl land management, and an internet argument segment about hunters getting angry when asked to kill more deer. Gary Simons has been a dear friend of mine for a long, long time. The first place we met was at the church that I grew up in when I was just a kid. He was my sunday school teacher for a time, and he was also someone that also had a reputation for being a good turkey hunter, and also someone who was alway willing to take a kid hunting. In this conversation, Mr. Gary has a couple of turkey hunting stories lined up for us, and trust me, you'll want to listen to all of them! Check it out!
