I know I’m not the only planning nerd out there who loves a fresh notebook, clean slate spreadsheet and new year marked on the calendar! However, as eager as we may be to start plotting our 2023 plans, diving right in doesn’t serve our goals in the long run.

If we want to set goals that actually make us feel accomplished and aligned, are a joyful process to achieve, and get met and surpassed in the realistic timeframe we aim for, we have to be intentional with WHY we’re setting those goals in the first place.

That’s why in this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy, we’re covering the questions I ask before setting any “New Year’s” goals or devising any annual plans to make sure that they not only happen, but they feel good to work toward all year long and beyond.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • The five key questions I ask myself before doing any goal-setting, planning or creating financial benchmarks

25 Dec 2023SMME #360 3 Keys for Building a High Performing Team00:21:33

Operating as a solo isn’t wrong, but it is limiting because it becomes seemingly impossible to imagine expansion or growth when you have to wear all the hats of being a business owner.

I’m not saying it’s not attainable, but it is not what I recommend or would ever put myself through as a CEO.

Developing a team has changed my life for the better.

16 Jan 2023SMME #314 How to Establish and Communicate Healthy Boundaries with Christine Seibold00:30:52

Boundary is a word often tiptoed around because to set them properly, you’re required to step outside of your comfort zone.

In both your professional and personal lives, boundaries are an essential piece to establishing what you will and won’t tolerate from employees or loved ones.

I sat down to talk with Christine Seibold, an author, community founder, and a business and mindset coach, in today’s episode of the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast.

Christine left her job at Harvard University in September 2018 to move to Miami, FL to open her own business - Freelance N’ Freedom.

Today she helps female virtual assistants leave their 9 to 5 jobs and start their own businesses, which is truly exciting and satisfying work. “$46,500 in SEVEN DAYS?! TELL ME EVERYTHING!” was the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw Ashlen’s Wednesday Wins post last month.

In addition to Ashlen’s December gift card promo being a smashing success, what drew me to her success story was how she created a great cash infusion into her business by keeping a successful sales strategy from the previous owner and amplifying it by combining guerilla marketing tactics with new technology strategies.

Here to spill the details on her goal crushing promotion and share her top takeaways in this episode of the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast is Ashlen Day, Spa CEO of CopperLeaf Spa & Salon in Winnsboro, Texas.

She started out as a service provider at CooperLeaf in 2017 and eventually moved into the management eventually purchasing the spa and becoming the owner in 2023. Plus she’s one of my students in the Growth Factor Framework program!

Her business is home to 22 employees, 19 of them being service providers, and offers a broad spectrum of services including: massage, aesthetics, nails & hair.

If you’re looking to see what’s possible through a dedicated promotional retail push, I highly recommend you tune in for a strong dose of inspiration, encouragement and tangible takeaways.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Ashlen’s journey from service provider to owner of CooperLeaf Spa & Salon

16 Oct 2023SMME #351 What Does a Spa Manager Do?00:13:59

Is your spa’s revenue stuck at the $28-30K per month mark?

Often, I’ll see spa owners approach this issue with their sales and marketing hat on, but I’m here to tell you to swap out that hat for another because the thing you really want to be examining here is your team.

Chances are, you’re not operating solely as the spa owner and CEO. Instead, you’re acting as the CEO and the spa manager (and maybe you’re still in the treatment room, too!). If you find yourself trying to figure out a way to up those monthly revenue numbers, it’s time to consider bringing on a spa manager, and in this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy, I’m breaking down exactly what someone in this role should be responsible for.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What it means to have someone else other than you owning the role of spa manager

  • What qualities should you look for in a spa manager and what tasks they typically handle

  • How having a spa manager on your team shifts your day-to-day responsibilities as a Spa CEO

09 Oct 2023SMME #350 Preparing Your Spa to Sell with Ben Hernandez of Skytale Group00:31:25

If you’re like the majority of the spa owners who tune into Spa Marketing Made Easy, you likely started your business from a place of passion. Maybe you set out as a solo straight out of school and now you’re focused on building your empire. Maybe you set out to build your own practice after years of working for someone else and knowing you could build something even greater.

Typically, when we build a business from a place of passion and doing what we love, the idea of selling that business isn’t one of the reasons we dove into entrepreneurship. When introducing a new service, modality, product, or provider to your spa, your primary goal as Spa CEO is recouping your return on investment, and your second goal should be profit. 01 Jan 2024SMME #361 Setting Intentions: Daniela’s 2024 Words of the Year00:08:22

One of my favorite practices every January is to set my intention for the year.

The word (or phrase) I select is the constant reminder I refer to weekly as I navigate life and business for another year.

For 2024, I decided to switch it up a bit.

After seeing a Facebook post that said whichever 4 words you see first in the word scramble are going to determine your year, I decided to play along and ended up loving the 4 words I saw first.

Tune in to this episode to hear what my focus is going to be in 2024!

In this episode, I discuss:

  • Intention setting and why it’s important to regularly practice

  • My process for setting my yearly intention

  • The 5 words I am committing to in 2024

10 Jul 2023SMME #339 Uncovering Your True Happiness with Elayne Mendoza00:29:10

As a lover of systems, spreadsheets, and a well planned out calendar, I realize that the roadmap we set out for ourselves doesn’t always reach the planned destination.

That’s why I constantly call entrepreneurship a rollercoaster.

My guest on today’s episode of the Spa Marketing Made Easy is living proof that life doesn’t always turn out as we plan.

Elayne Mendoza is a Growth Factor Framework member who is the founder of a latina owned beauty business named Moonlyte Studio.

She recently led our Women’s Circle event as part of the Spa CEO Intensive, which prompted us to sit down and discuss how the moment she said “YES!” to the opportunity to facilitate breathwork and meditation ceremonies has shifted her entrepreneurial journey into a new phase beyond her beauty services.

Whether you’re feeling stuck in your journey or happily progressing along, this episode is a great listen for everyone as a reminder that nothing is ever set in stone.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Seizing the opportunities that are presented to us

23 Oct 2023SMME #352 From Stay At Home Mom to Spa CEO Who Went from $0 to $180K in 6 Months with Debbie Brewer SMME #35200:33:20

A sentiment I’ve often shared is that “it’s never too late to start,” and today’s guest is a beautiful example of how you can begin your life as Spa CEO after moving through a different career journey and be wildly successful at any age.

Joining me on this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy is Debbie Brewer, the CEO of Beauty Brew Skincare and Spa, a full-service wellness and beauty spa in New Jersey. Debbie began her entrepreneurial path after raising three incredible women as a stay at home mom, and once her kids were grown, she pursued her passion for aesthetics, which also led the way to sugaring, an element of aesthetics she’s building her legacy around. Within six months of opening her own business, Debbie went from $0 to $180K in revenue, and in this episode, we’re talking about how she made it happen.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Debbie’s journey of discovering the world of aesthetics and her personal skincare journey healing hormonal melasma

  • The transition out of filling the long-time role of stay-at-home mom for her family and moving into an aesthetics career, and eventually a Spa CEO of her own practice

  • How partnering with Dermaconcepts, the distributors of Environ Skin Care, has helped set up Debbie for success through retail, treatments and gaining access to the exclusive resources Growth Factor Framework provides through our partnership with Dermaconcepts

  • How Debbie looks at legacy and the steps she is taking now to move toward her long-term vision, plus, her words of wisdom for aestheticians on the cusp of transition and breakthrough

12 Aug 2024SMME #393 5 Money Mistakes Spa Owners Make On Their Journey to a Million 00:29:39

The magic “million dollar mark” is a goal my team and I frequently hear within our coaching programs and among our Spa CEO students and clients, and for good reason. Being a seven-figure business owner is a huge accomplishment, one that many small businesses don’t achieve, especially women (a statistic we’re set out to change among spa owners!).

However, just as frequently as we hear that goal, we see the same mistakes made by spa owners that hinder their ability to grow to that million-dollar-per-year mark. The good news is that these mistakes aren’t complicated to fix. But they do require consistency in your commitment to being and acting like a Spa CEO because, when you own that role and what you need to do to fulfill it, these are mistakes you’ll naturally avoid.

Join me and Team Addo coach Nicole Cooley for our second episode of Finance Month on the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast, where we discuss:

  • The five most common mistakes spa owners make keeping them from hitting $1 million in annual revenue

  • Why knowing your numbers is critical to your ability to reach $1 million as well as how to analyze those numbers so you can leverage them

  • Nicole’s tips for creating a cash reserves calculation that works specifically for you

  • Understanding lines of credit and how to leverage loans and other financial assistance to grow your business

  • How scheduling and capacity planning play into your big picture goals, plus how to have several success plans so you’re never left wondering what move to make next on your journey to $1 million in annual revenue

08 Apr 2024SMME #375 How to Fire a Bad Client00:11:47

Today, we're addressing a scenario every spa owner will likely face at some point: the decision to fire a bad client. But what exactly makes a client "bad" for your business?

From those who consistently show up late or cancel at the last minute to those seeking endless discounts or disrespecting your team, we'll explore the types of behaviors that disrupt your business flow and negatively impact your team's morale.

Before you take the step to sever ties, I guide you through a reflective process. Have you set clear boundaries and communicated your policies effectively?

Sometimes, the solution starts with us.

For those moments when letting go of a client becomes necessary, we'll discuss how to handle the situation with professionalism, including a template for drafting that difficult email or letter.

The heart of this conversation is about protecting your team's energy and ensuring your spa's environment remains positive and productive.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Identifying a bad client and understanding the impact they have on your spa and team.

  • Key questions to ask yourself before making the decision to part ways with a client.

  • Strategies for clear communication and enforcing policies to prevent misunderstandings.

  • Best practices for firing a client with dignity, including how to craft a respectful goodbye message.

  • Plus, we created a sample email that you can download and use as a template.

26 Dec 2022SMME #311 Blocking off time to reach your financial goals - Part 2 - 2023 Annual Planning00:19:24

“Nothing changes if nothing changes” is a statement you’ll hear me repeat often because in order to reach a new level in business, you have to get serious about your goals.

After defining your financial goals, the next step is to get crystal clear on the amount of time you need to set aside on your calendar to achieve those goals.

In this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy, I’m covering the questions to consider before 2023 that will help you define the proper work/life balance for you in this season of life, plus advice on how to assess your current pricing structure and services profitability.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Getting clear about your vision for your company and your entrepreneurial path
  • Defining the really important things in 2022 that you didn’t have time to dedicate your focus on
  • Understanding your season of life and how that affects your work schedule
  • Planning questions to ask yourself to map out your spa’s pricing and services

29 May 2023SMME #333 Balancing Your Feminine and Masculine Energies in Leadership with Alexa Bowditch00:52:41

How do we balance these two energies in business?

The first step (structure = masculine) is to slow down and allow yourself time to tap into the softer state of just being (emotions = feminine).

As a Spa CEO, the two energies coexist in your leadership. The traditional structure and systems of your business exert a masculine influence.

The game changer is being in connection with the people you lead allows vulnerability into the mix where you share a piece of who you are under your business owner shell.

My guest on today’s episode of the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast is a sex and relationship by design coach who is an expert on tapping into both energies to make you a well rounded leader.

Alexa Bowditch, also known as ‘That Sex Chick’ across social media, is the founder of The Sex & Love Co. Community, a NY Times featured group with love, sex & relationships as the central focus.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Balancing masculine vs feminine energy

  • Giving yourself time to tap into feminine slowness

  • Understanding congruence within yourself

  • Ignoring limiting beliefs and leaning into developing a stronger connection with yourself and your feminine energy

  • Priceless value of connecting with other like minded women

28 Nov 2022SMME #307 Taking Advantage of Your Cycle for Aligned Achievement with Renae Fieck 00:29:05

Ever felt that flow of the 24-hours-in-a-day or 40-hours-in-a-work week doesn’t *actually* flow? That’s because those timeframes weren’t built with our innate energetic cycles in mind, especially for women.

For women, understanding our cycle is not only a foundational element of understanding your feminine energy, but when viewing it through the lens of business and work, becomes a powerful code for unlocking your best life/work balance, structure, and schedule.

In this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy, I’m chatting with Renae Fieck, mom of three, occupational therapist, and the founder of Cycle Advantage and host of the Cycle Advantage Podcast about optimizing your business and life according to your cycle so you can gain leverage as a CEO, balance the demands of life, make a bigger impact, and get bigger results without adding more stress or needing more time.

No matter where you’re at in your feminine journey or lifecycle, and even if you’re a person who doesn’t have a cycle, but works closely with women who do, you’ll find this episode insightful and inspiring!

In this episode, we discuss:

  • How embracing our cycle and what’s actually happening with our cycle changes the way we show up in life, within business, and as a leader
  • Some of our personal experiences in finding and tuning into our feminine energy and how big of a role our cycle plays in all facets of our lives as feminine beings
  • The ways we can create microshifts in the ebbs and flows of our workflow so we can better align with our natural energetic cycle
  • The four key phases of your cycle and how they manifest in the ways we might feel and show up
  • Insights into how we can tune into our natural cycle even if you’re not menstruating and how to help your body to adjust and align to a natural rhythm

Your sales are going great, and you’re expecting one of your spa's highest revenue months yet, but when it comes time to do your monthly bookkeeping, what you brought in seems to have flown out the door just as fast. Does that feel familiar?

Whether it’s constantly feeling like you’re in a state of catch-up with your business finances, or you honestly don’t know where all the money is going — Team Addo coach Nicole Cooley and I are here to break down all your cash flow woes so you can start seeing exactly where your money is going and manage it to flow where you want, when you want.

If you ever feel like trying to manage your business’ finances is a rollercoaster ride, we’re going to shine a light on our biggest tips and top tool, YNAB (short for You Need a Budget), to smooth out the bumps so your cash flow can actually be in, well, flow!

In this episode, we discuss:

This may be a podcast all about spa marketing and business growth, but want to know the *real* secret behind successful spa marketing made easy? Having products and treatments you’re excited to offer and can’t help but share!

And while I’m no longer in the treatment room, I’ll never stop nerding out on new aesthetics technologies, devices and products, which is why I had to bring Giovanna McCarthy, founder of PDO Max on to the show.

In January 2020, PDO Max became one of a few companies who had a fully FDA cleared PDO thread-in-cannula device, which offers one of the least invasive products to help reposition sagging skin while also stimulating collagen and elastin production to give patients defined features while maintaining a more naturally youthful look.

Giovanna is a visionary entrepreneur with over 30 years in the aesthetics industry and I can’t wait for you to learn more about her incredible products PDO AfterGlo™ serum and Glowpin™ multi-needle stimulator as well as glean insights from an entrepreneur with an extensive track record of continuously staying ahead of the curve in the aesthetic industry.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why it’s important for aestheticians to stay abreast of new technologies and treatments, even if they’re outside of their defined scope of practice

  • How threads work within the skin and the opportunity Giovanna saw in translating the benefits and technology of threads into a non-invasive product

  • The ins and outs of the PDO Max AfterGlo™ serum and Glowpin™ – how it works within the skin and how it can be utilized within your aesthetic practice

12 Dec 2022SMME #309 Capturing 250+ New Client Leads through Facebook Groups with Maria Ramos00:16:34

Where is the first place people go to share recommendations, give reviews, and connect with other people in their communities?

Facebook AKA the new “digital word-of-mouth” platform.

You’ll often hear me talk about how in order to attract new clients, you need to meet them where they are online. That place is inside Facebook groups.

In this episode of Spa Marketing Made Easy, Maria Ramos, known to her 80,000 Facebook group members as “The Money Making Esthetician,” joins me to share how she gained 250+ new leads by implementing a Facebook groups marketing strategy she heard right here on our podcast.

Before we dive in, I want to preface that today’s episode is not about building your own Facebook group from scratch (which could be a good strategy depending on your business), but rather how you can leverage established active Facebook groups in your area.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Results Maria experienced after implementing this Facebook group strategy
  • Importance for new providers to get hands-on experience during the onboarding process
  • The use of a Google Form to capture lead information and segmenting those leads by area of interest
  • Focusing on providing a quality experience for every client, especially when it’s for new providers’ practice

12 Feb 2024SMME #367 The Spa CEO Journey: What’s The Next Right Step For You? 00:21:56

If I had to rank my top shared insights on the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast, “leadership is a learned skill” would definitely make my Top 3.

That’s what today’s episode is all about. I’m asking you the one question all Spa CEOs need to be asking themselves in regards to leadership.

I’ve been transparent that it’s really hard (nearly impossible) to cross the million dollar mark as a solo.

If you find yourself trying to figure out a way to increase your monthly revenue number, it’s time to consider bringing on a spa manager.

However…

Before you can jump in and hire a role that is essentially an extension of you - the Spa CEO - you need to understand if you’re in a place where your leadership skills are ready to delegate and manage.

This episode is going to help you answer the hard leadership questions and give you a clear understanding of how a Spa Manager can benefit your business.

In this episode, I discuss:

  • My personal experiences with leadership

  • The recognition that leadership is a learned skill that’s constantly evolving

  • A full detailed list of spa manager responsibilities

  • Not settling back into old patterns if you’ve lost sight of your goals - there is always room to push reset and begin again

  • An exercise of taking an honest assessment of your business and options for the  right next step forward

10 Jun 2024SMME #384 Understanding and Increasing Your Spa's Client Retention00:12:57

When we talk about marketing strategy, all too often the primary focus of the conversation is about getting new clients through your spa’s door. Now don’t get me wrong, having a fresh flow of new leads and clients is critical in the health of your business, but just as important is retaining your existing clientele.

While you will inevitably get client drop off simply due to the natural flux of life circumstances among your clients, regardless of the incredible caliber of service you provide, focusing on client retention is key for building a business that’s profitable. In this episode, we’re going to talk about all the angles of this key metric you need to keep your eye on as a Spa CEO.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why client retention is such a critical KPI to keep tabs of within your business and how it sets you up to increase your spa’s overall profitability

  • Balancing the metrics of client acquisition and retention based on the specific growth stage of your spa business

  • Benchmarks to keep in mind for assessing where your current client retention KPIs fall and how to adjust your marketing budget accordingly

  • A couple of my favorite strategies, including one you can start TODAY to keep your existing clients on your spa’s books

24 Jul 2023SMME #341 Learn All About Starting an Ecom Business from Gamal Codner00:33:03

A wise friend once said to me “spa owners are in the confidence business.”

This has stuck with me as a reminder that the spa industry relies heavily on relationship building with clients because you are an expert for them to lean on.

With that in mind, the concept of selling your own private skincare label is a natural fit for three reasons:

  1. A clientele base that knows, likes, and trusts you is already in place

  2. You are educating about home skincare regimens after every treatment

  3. Adding an e-commerce stream of revenue would be low maintenance as the principles are already in place in the form of retail at your spa

My guest on today’s episode of the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast is one of only 90 official Shopify & Amazon-verified coaches in the world who shares the in’s and out’s of how to get your e-commerce business started.

Gamal Codner started, scaled & sold his 7-figure e-commerce brand in under 4 years.  Before that, he raised ~$10M+ and has had 9 successful business transactions totaling over $50 million while working in M&A.

After selling his brand, he decided to start a coaching program with his wife that teaches his new way of running a brand, that helps e-commerce founders turn their lifestyle businesses into desirable 7-figure businesses people want to buy.

The program is kind of like an online MBA for e-commerce brands that learn how to scale with marketing, cash flow, and operation systems. With a focus on optimizing for simplicity, profits, and enjoyment of life.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Some of the biggest challenges business owners face launching an ecom brand

  • One differentiation that sets ecom businesses apart

  • The blueprint Gamal developed after solving his own negative cash flow management

  • Three main costs associated with starting an e-commerce brand

  • The reason an e-commerce business would be a natural fit for spas

  • The 3 most important steps you need to take to begin

26 Feb 2024SMME #369 Key Takeaways from Echelon Front’s Muster Conference with Daniela + Kyle00:21:42

To truly practice what I preach, leadership development is constantly in my routine.

With that in mind, I bet you didn’t think you’d catch me attending a leadership conference led by former Navy SEALs…

but boy was I blown away!

After reading, Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy SEALs Lead and Win, I was hooked and ready to learn more about leading in a more practical, tangible way from authors Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.

So my husband Kyle and I signed up to attend The Muster.

It’s an intense, two-day leadership conference designed to provide leaders with real-world applicable leadership principles, assessments, and role-playing opportunities to maximize their understanding and lock in their learning.

26 Jun 2023SMME #337 A Look Inside Daniela’s Calendar Management Process00:12:30

“Is this what the CEO of a seven figure company does?”

The answer to this question is an important first step to start as you begin to understand where your time should be spent as you map out your calendar.

A time tracker exercise is going to help you pinpoint where you’re most efficient.

It answers questions like…

  1. What time of day am I most efficient?

  2. When do I feel the most creative?

  3. What part of my day am I getting tasks accomplished?

If you want to build a life where your time is spent intentionally doing the work that leads you toward:

  • Hitting your biggest goals (personally and professionally)

  • Always having a full cup (i.e. - you feel rested, energized and happy)

  • And allows you to cultivate balance between your business and/home life

Then this episode is for you.

In this week’s episode on the Spa Marketing Made Easy podcast, I’m giving you an inside look at how I manage my calendar to make sure I’m optimizing my time in the most efficient way possible.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • My full calendar management process that allows me to fully show up as CEO in my business and as the wife and mom I aim to be at home

  • Time tracker exercise benefits to understand when you’re most productive

  • Why context switching makes you more unproductive

13 Mar 2023SMME #322 Mastering Memberships with Mangomint’s Marchelle McKeirnan00:37:00

The consistency of cash flow alone may seem like a good enough reason to consider launching and growing a membership.

Weighing the pros and cons, here are a few more to add to the pros side.

Tune in to today’s episode where Mangomint’s VP of Sales, Marchelle McKeirnan, joins me to talk about the best strategies to consider when launching a new membership in a spa.

30 Oct 2023SMME #353 Releasing Guilt Over Time Spent and How We Plan for Success00:12:08

Ambitious women are wired for guilt. I know that statement packs a punch, especially if you let it sink in.

Whether its mom guilt, guilt for spending time on something “frivolous” or “wasting time” on something that doesn’t move the needle or make you money, it’s all too easy for an ambitious woman to feel like she’s trying to “do it all,” but as a result, not doing it well.

No matter how you want to classify the guilt, I want to take some time to shine a light on it, talk through it, and make a plan to blow past it. Life is too short to spend time in regret feeling guilty about how you’ve spent your time (it’s a vicious circle!). Tune in and let’s talk about how we’re going to leave the guilt behind and move forward with a plan for your life and business that feels good this coming year.

In this episode, I go over:

  • How my journey through motherhood transformed my relationship with time and how I came face to face with mom guilt, plus, what I’ve done to shift out of it

  • Why it’s important to examine how we feel around how we’re spending our time and how that aligns with our vision for our life and our businesses

  • The 4 critical steps in my and my team’s annual planning process

  • How you can join us for our Next Level Growth live virtual event where I’ll walk you through the process so you can learn and implement in one power-packed afternoon!
