Just as soon as I’m done birthin’ chickens, we’ll stop talking about chickens. As a Southerner, my analogies will come from my daily life, y’all. Time to talk about some personal stuff, admit some failures, and trudge on into the truth about failure to thrive. Blessed Imbolc! Let’s get real about seasonal depression, loss of hope in general, and hanging in there. Today’s sit n’ sip on the porch is all about sharing the lows, but also the unfathomable (and often hard to locate) hope that resides just under the frozen tundra. I might be sharing too much in this one—but we’re in this together, so . . . Love y’all!
09 Feb 2020 | E24: BEAUTIFUL RUINS | 00:38:35
Of all the podcasts I have done, for some reason, this feels the most personal. Come settle in with me on the porch. We need to talk about the truth when it comes to aging, not some idealistic hogwash. Some of it is horrific. Some of it is heartbreaking. But some of it is just downright fucking beautiful. Welcome to the porch of an aging Southern witch.
16 Feb 2020 | E25: THE GOING RATE OF A SOUTHERN WITCH | 00:36:03
Perhaps the most difficult moment in my life has been learning my worth. Haggling that down demeans my spirit and lays to waste precious magic. Come chat with me on the porch about understanding our worth, standing firm on the weight of it, and determining a fair value for our work and love. The tea is sweet—y’all settle on in! Email me at seba@southernfriedwitch.com and share your own thoughts on a witch’s weight. Love y’all!

Alright: apparently, there are certain words we cannot use right now that have to do with the current, um, situation that we are all worried about. So. Let’s talk about a certain gremlin, if you will, and how to bless its ass? Y’all know I’m about to pick a winner on that animal spirit topic—so send in your stories about an animal that changed the way you understand their character and their importance to your witch life. Email me: seba@southernfriedwitch.com. Love y’all!

29 Mar 2020 | E30: LOVE IN THE TIME OF COVID-19 | 00:56:04
This is gonna be rough, y’all: we are working on sheltering in place and my fam is shoved up into every corner. What you will hear today is fairly unedited, recorded roughly and unfairly for my interviewee, and about as raw as it gets. I ain’t about to not put out a podcast, so . . . let’s talk about love, radical defiance in the face of a monster, and hanging on with spirit. Love y’all!
04 Apr 2020 | E31: THE BABY WITCH | 00:37:58

18 Apr 2020 | E33: HAINT-BLUE DOORS AND SPECIAL DELIVERIES | 00:30:26
Y’all, sometimes we have to remember that not all bad juju delivered to your door is necessarily unusable. Just be sure that the door that folks notice the most isn’t the one to your home and hearth. Let’s chat about turning crap into compost! Email me: seba@southernfriedwitch.com
03 May 2020 | E34: CRAYONS, PETER PAN AND CHOCOLATE | 00:24:53

09 May 2020 | E35: COLORING ME-THE HUES OF THE CRAFT | 00:25:32
So much of the Craft is embedded in rebellion, revolution and living out-of-the-box. Yet, how much of that have we given away without weighing it? Let’s chat on the porch a while about colors, what they signify—and what they do not. Love y’all!
24 May 2020 | E36: THE NATURE OF SUNSETS | 00:29:44

On the anniversary month of this podcast, I am lifting off Season Two! It’s been a long time, I know, and I have some apologies to make and some chicken to fry. Y’all, bear with me. I’m a little rusty. Even so, let’s sit on the porch a spell and chat about hard decisions—the beauty, the pain, and the manifestation of change. Love y’all!
26 Sep 2020 | S2/E2: THE SAMHAIN QUILT | 00:36:47
Some things wake us up in the middle of the night. What do we cuddle under to make the boogeyman go away? Let's talk about those dark and worrisome boogies as we slide into the Witch's Season.
27 Dec 2020 | S2/E3: Soul Tax | 00:32:29
I know. I dropped off the planet again—2020 has been harder than this old witch knew it could be. This episode is one that I did back at the end of October, right before my grandchild was born. It is roughly edited, perhaps not my best work. Skip to about 14:00 if you don’t want to hear about chickens, but hang in there if you want to know where we land. Love y’all! Here’s that cool journal I told y’all about, enjoy! https://farmerish.net/

So, why gardening, why plants? Because. They taught about living, dying, and everything in between. Y’all come sit on the porch a spell and let me talk you into growing you. Also, please support jpcandles.com? All of y’all have the opportunity to support my honey-bunny and will get 10% off any ethically made, locally loved candle by using code SouthernFriedWitch. It helps me, it helps someone who saved me once upon a time, and you will end up with a candle that can groove way past a seance. Love y’all like chicken.
28 Jan 2021 | S2/E6: INTERVIEW WITH A QUEEN: AN ALABAMA PAGAN HERETIC | 00:27:15
Y’all, it was my honor to interview Linda Kerr, the High Priestess who had such a strong hand in forging Pagan community in Alabama. While the audio quality is low (be prepared for that, we did this on Zoom), the opportunity to learn more about Alabama Pagan history is high. In the future, I will work to find a better platform for interviews . . . but there was no way that I was giving up the opportunity to publish this. We cackle a little, share a little about croning, and end with a tree—normal goings on for us two. Blessed Be, Y’all! For more on Faerie Faith: http://www.faeriefaith.net/

01 May 2022 | S2/E24: WITCH-ISH: AN INTERVIEW WITH A MAINE FARMER | 00:42:58

Hey, y’all! Today, I’m ruminating on the difference between a real sign and daily life—and in particular, snakes in your path. It takes me about to 7:20 to get to the magic end of things, so hang in there. I do like a Southern story. Somewhere along the line, I touch on the issue of karma—and may be podcasting on the subject soon. In the meantime, I’ve linked my past work on the subject in the show notes.

Well, I might have gotten a little salty on this one, but it had to be said. Also, a sweet Patreon subscriber asked me how to chicken: and that’s what you’re gonna get for most of this podcast. Sometimes, I just need to talk about homesteading. There’s magic in that, too!

17 Jul 2022 | S2/E35: BLESS YOR' HEART--A SOUTHERN CLEAVING | 00:33:55
Scoot up a chair on the porch, because today I’m telling y’all about the third version of blessing someone’s heart—and it’s a doozy. We all know that the southern version can be sweet or salty, but there is a space in between that is nothing short of magical. That is, if you need to cleave and move on . . .
25 Jul 2022 | S2/E36: Listener Letters: Imposter Syndrome and Shaken Faith | 00:35:09
Hey, y’all! It’s been a while since I answered letters on the air, so here we go! One of today’s stories traverse that feeling that we all get from time to time: we aren’t good enough, we aren’t real, we aren’t magical. Such a state of being is exceptionally hard on the beginning witch. Our second story is one of faith on the wire, specifically after a profound loss. If you have ever had a moment like these, join me in walking with these beautiful people and learning a bit more about ourselves in the process.
31 Jul 2022 | S2/E37: THE SURVIVOR'S PLAYLIST | 00:30:50
Hey, y’all. I’m sharing a little secret weapon today on how I deal with “trauma bubbles” in the middle of the night. Of course, Stranger Things had to come up . . . but here it is. As desperate as I was to survive my own “upside down” places, I developed this method to stitch good stuff to the horror of my childhood, as well as some of my adulthood, to battle those astral nasties.
07 Aug 2022 | S2/E38: FARMCRAFT FOR THE GREEN WITCH | 00:32:37

14 Aug 2022 | S2/E39: THE THINNING TIME--HARVEST, GHOSTS, AND LONGEST WALK | 00:44:10
Hey, y’all! The light has shifted and we now are walking toward the longest night, and I’m here for it. This summer has been somewhat brutal—although, if predictions are correct, the winter will be, as well. That reprieve that is on the way, that golden space in between, has been beckoning me. Today is all about ghost stories, preparing for end of the year, and reminding myself that my own beloved dead walk with me.
21 Aug 2022 | S2/E40: Homegrown Magic and Living Wards | 00:27:12
Hey, Y’all! Join me on the porch for a little talk about how to forge agreements with living things—as well as inanimate ones—that are already around your home. So often, new witches feel outside of these practices, but there are simple and sweet ways to begin.
20 Aug 2022 | SNEAK PEAK: SO, WHAT HAPPENS ON THE SFW PATREON? | 00:34:18
Hey, y’all! Terrin (my partner) and I have little chats, friendly arguments, and other shenanigans over on the SFW Patreon about once per month. This recording happened on June, 16th of 2022. On this day, we were really into the idea of the flow of energy, magic, and what chaos actually has to do with it (although, the rabbit hole led Terrin to think he could make a banana human. He’s all cleared up now). We’ve been together nearly sixteen years, so expect extra-ness.
28 Aug 2022 | S2/E41: MAMA WITCH--FINDING TIME FOR THE CRAFT | 00:27:02
Hey, Y’all! A listener wrote in and wanted me to speak on the issue of balancing magic with the rearing of small children. I got you, hon. I remember raising mine and trying to find time to “do magic,” not realizing that I was already living it in every moment. So nestle onto the porch and let’s take a brief run down memory lane.
04 Sep 2022 | S2/E42: Unsacred Acts: Policing the Identity of "Witch" | 00:41:48
Well, y’all: I only apologize for my tone. I tried to re-record it, but the anger came out anyway—so I went with it. While there is some contention out there in the Witch world that the designation of “Witch” is not to be self-awarded, I contend that this is, well, unmitigated hogwash. This episode is for the new witches, the baby witches, the solitary witches, but also for anyone who proports to hold the magic wand that creates them.
11 Sep 2022 | S2/E43: ANCESTORS, JERSEY GIRLS, AND A FORGOTTEN MOUNTAIN | 00:04:47
Hey, y’all! I found a whole scat of listener letters and am sharing three stories of beginnings and other musings today. Settle in on the porch and let’s chat about memories, the calling of the craft, and how it all shapes us as witches.
18 Sep 2022 | S2/E44: "YOU MAKE CRONING FUN"--A LOVE LETTER/CLAPBACK TO MY FELLOW CRONIES | 00:47:30
Hey, y’all! Join me on the porch for a talk about all things Crone: the good, the bad, and the ugly. What really matters is this: we do not lose our intrinsic selves as we age. Rather, we add on and become more—but only if we open our hearts and our minds and continue to grow. Some of my Cronies are holding onto ideologies that no longer serve them, not to mention our communities, and a bit of spiritual Death Cleaning can go a long way toward cleaning up that nasty mess. Let’s witchify every damn thing, including growing older.
25 Sep 2022 | S2/E45: COMING OUT OF THE BROOM CLOSET | 00:36:56
Hey, Y’all. Well, it’s begun. I couldn’t stand it in here anymore and the dust bunnies were killing my allergies. I’m coming out, and it’s been a long, hard ride to get here. If you live somewhere else, you might not understand the difficulties and restrictions of living in the Deep South—but, it has cost some of us dearly.
02 Oct 2022 | S2/E46: The Magical Squint--Seeing Trouble a' Coming | 00:40:43
Hey y’all! Snuggle up on the porch and let’s chat about all those warning signs, all those moments, in which we see a situation going south—but just cannot bring ourselves to do anything about it. Personally, I’m guilty of this all too often. Let’s work on those boundaries a bit earlier, a bit harder, and save ourselves a lot of heartache.
09 Oct 2022 | S2/E47: THE WEAVERS | 00:31:20
Well, y’all: I barely got this one recorded before running off to my happy place on the coast. The chat on the porch is more of a wandering today down the backroads of the stories that have knitted my life together. Remember to stay for the moments after sunset . . . sometimes, that’s where the fun is.
16 Oct 2022 | S2/E48: Racism on Tour, Listener Letters, and a Raffle for Weaver November | 00:33:18
Hey, y’all! Snuggle up on the porch and let me tell you how I got my ass into hot water with my ancestors on vacation. Racism can pop up in the strangest places—and so, we need to be ready to go to battle on the turn of a dime. Also, a dear listener of mine wrote in about what it’s like to be queer while moving through the stages of cronehood, or is it haghood? Love y’all!
23 Oct 2022 | S2/E49: How to Witchify 'Ary Damn Thang | 00:39:22
Well, y’all: I say it a lot. Even put it on a coaster, lol! Today, I’m breaking down exactly what it means to me to witchify ‘ary damn thang. To see the world through my witchy glasses is to pull magic back into focus in all things, all day, all the time. This little ritual has saved me, over and over, from the horrors and dust of the mundane.
30 Oct 2022 | S2/E50: Laurie Strode and the Craft: How to be a Final Witch | 00:30:47
Hey, y’all: this one is a little salty. As a Gen X witch, pop culture tends to weave itself through my understanding of most things, including my childhood. No one example was more powerful than Laurie Strode. That character taught me more about survival than any other, and for that I am eternally grateful. So, regardless of the gore, the cinematic cringe, and the poor ratings: something inherently vital was instilled in me while watching Halloween in 1978. While I had other models of strength as life moved along (RBG, Gloria Steinhem, my grandma), none prepared me to fight the boogeyman like Laurie Strode. So, bear with me.
06 Nov 2022 | S2/E51: Weaver November | 00:36:08
Welcome to Weaver November!
13 Nov 2022 | S2/E52: Southern Weavers--HagCraft Farm and HaxanWolf | 00:53:02
Y’all, it was my privilege and honor to interview two Southern weavers: one silversmith, one seamstress/woader, who are also both witches. Here in Weaver November, it’s important to remember our witchy crafters and all of the love, magic, and care that they put into their work!
20 Nov 2022 | S2/E53: Southern Weavers--A Modern Day Rumpelstiltskin | 00:29:02
Y’all, it was my privilege and honor to have Dasos Crowsong on the show this week. We are winding down Weaver November by discussing the art of spinning, and actual weaving, and how it informs Dasos’s magic and journey as a Druid. Their path has always been one that wanted to be woven into stories, and here, we have nothing short of gold.
27 Nov 2022 | S2/E54: Sacred by Default--A Macaroni Yuletide | 00:35:48
Hey, Y’all! I’m recovering from standing in the kitchen for ten hours, but it was all worth it in the end. Today is just a bit of a ramble about the importance of NOT getting everything just right. Hope you all have a beautifully f*d up holiday season—and if you’ve been listening, you know what I mean.
04 Dec 2022 | S2/E55: SLOW CRAFT--DEEPLY-ROOTED SPELLWORK FOR THE PAGAN WITCH | 00:33:13
Y'all have heard of slow fashion and slow food. That designation usually means it's more meaningful, healthier for us and the planet, and altogether more valuable than the quick hits that we crave. Today, I'm talking about slow spellwork: the thoughtful and painstakingly thorough magic that lasts and deeply satisfies the soul.
11 Dec 2022 | S2/E56: EVANGELICAL ANIMISTS, MEDICINAL MOONSHINE, AND COMMUNITY SERVICE--WITH BYRON BALLARD | 01:05:15
As usual, y’all: when Byron and I get to talking, we go off road. Recently, I caught her on the phone and this is the result: a wild, wandering, witchy ride. It was worth getting a little mud on the tires.
18 Dec 2022 | S2/E57: Spirits of the Woods and Yule Blessings | 00:26:47
Blessed Yule, y’all! Snuggle up on the porch—we have a short, sweet little story about those spirits we find in the woods, just in time for Winter Solstice and the bringing back of the light. Hope you are all warm and safe. Love you! Seba
01 Jan 2023 | S2/E58: What's It Like? Guest Podcast with a Coven Student | 00:31:32
Happy New Year, y’all! I’m still on a break—but my lovely new student has agreed to step in. Shannon gathered questions from our Patreon Batfamily and answered them! So, settle in. She’s going to give you a bit of her story on what it’s like to finally find a working coven and what that has meant to her own Craft.
08 Jan 2023 | S2/E59: GOING FERAL--NAKED WITCHCRAFT FOR THE NEW YEAR | 00:33:30
Hey, y’all! I’m back from my break and I have something new going on: I’m ditching all witchy bells and whistles for an entire year. Going feral, rogue, and bare in all of my processes to see what I can learn. You get to a certain age/place in the Craft and—without a mentor—there must be something left to shake off the dust. I reckon I am bushcrafting my practice! While I will be sharing the dirty details over on Patreon, it occurs to me that some of my journey might show up over here on the podcast. So, here we go!
15 Jan 2023 | S2/E60: BUSHCRAFTING MY WITCHCRAFT | 00:29:24
Hey, y’all! I’m back on the porch just to chat about my adventures in the woods and the like. We all could use a little red clay mud on the tires, right?
22 Jan 2023 | S2/E61: THE NATURE OF MY CRAFT (A REINTRODUCTION) | 00:28:29
Y’all, it has occurred to me that many new listeners have no idea who I am as a Witch. For all those folks, this is my reintroduction. After all, Season One was 2019! So settle in on the porch and let me share with you the nature of my Craft.
29 Jan 2023 | S2/E62: INTO THE SHADOWS--DOING THE THE GRUNGY WORK | 00:37:11
Hey, y’all! Nestle in on the porch and let’s talk about the grungy, necessary shadow work that can make or break a witch’s Craft. At the beginning of any journey, the dried clay gets knocked off my shoes—especially if the road ahead looks wild and ragged. This path ahead in my Craft is no different. Sometimes, we have to head to the cellar to see what’s knocking about down there. See you down there!
05 Feb 2023 | S2/E63: WITCHIFYING THE TOOLS--THE WALKING STICK | 00:29:56
Hey, y’all! Join me on the porch to chat about how we witchify our tools for the Craft. The deeper the connection to these, the more sacred the work. Today, I’m talking about my walking stick (aka stav/stave) and where it came from, why it matters, and how my interactions with it evolves over time. |
