07 Sep 2020Episode 45: Stephen Remick00:48:18
Stephen Remick was born and raised in Vermont. He received his Associates’s degree in Architecture from Vermont Technical College. Steve moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1982. He received his BFA in Painting from the Swain School of Design in 1986 where he met his future wife, Anne Carrozza.

Steve Remick worked for a year in Boston at Jordan Marsh’s in-house design firm but couldn’t endure the commute. He went on to start a painting and paperhanging company. Steve, his family, and the business moved to Dartmouth where it grew that business to a dozen employees.

He and Anne have raised a son and daughter who are now adults. Steve slowly reduced the size of his business to one employee – Steve Remick – to concentrate on his art.

Although he mostly paints landscapes and abstracts, he returned to Plein air in 2016 and, most recently, due to the pandemic, has executed portraits of COVID-19 healthcare workers which have gained a significant amount of attention. He was featured in an article in Artscope Magazine for this body of work.

Listen in on the conversation as The Artist Index’s host, Ron Fortier, speaks with Steve Remick about his life and work and how the pandemic has affected him as an artist and much more.

Welcome, Sarah Jane Mulvey, a poet, writer, and editor working a full-time job in the non-profit arts world. It was then, as she says, "I found my art friends. We established Anomaly Poetry, a collective of artists across genres and styles that have come together to perform, publish, and amplify poetic voices."  The group publishes two anthologies a year and hosts monthly open mic nights in Downtown New Bedford. In March of 2021, Sarah Mulvey applied for the City of New Bedford's Poet Laureate title and was appointed in August 2021. As Poet Laureate, she has the privilege of being invited to read at special events, chatting with local students about art and poetry, and, sharing her joy and passion for words throughout the community.

The Artist Index co-founder and host, Ron Fortier, talks to Sarah Mulvey about her background, passion for poetry, and title as the City of New Bedford's Poet Laureate.

28 Dec 2020Ep. 60: Ben Jones01:11:52

Welcome grant writer Ben Jones to In-Focus Podcast Number 60. Ben is an arts adjacent. What does that mean?

Ben Jones grew up surrounded by the arts. He had two aunts who worked as professional visual artists and teachers. His parents made sure his brother and he always had plenty of art materials.

There were many museum visits. His mom continues her grade school “art lady” duties to this day via social media. Yet, Ben remains a self-described arts adjacent – what he has in creative enthusiasm, he lacks, or so he says, in talent.

A while back, he established Left Brain, a business whose name was taken from the idea of helping the creatives he worked with. Ben worked in web development and assisted others in the field to navigate the business aspects of their art.

Currently, Ben Jones is employed in a grant writing role at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. More specifically, as the Director of Development – Corporations & Foundations, where he continues to help artists pursue resources to assist them in pursuing their art.

Listen in on his conversation as The Artist Index’s host, Ron Fortier delves more into Ben’s life, his background, and his ambitions.

25 Oct 2021Ep. 98: Chuck Boucher00:48:29

Welcome painter and author, Chuck (Charles R.) Boucher to In-Focus Podcast Number 98. Chuck has been developing his signature style, one that fuses the formality of the classical narrative with the expressive structures of the Abstract Expressionist movement of the early 1900s since 1986.

As he explains, "When I was about fourteen years old, I visited the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston for the first time. There I met Egyptian Mummies, followed by John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, Monet, Picasso, and Vincent. I sat before the masterpiece painting "The Daughters of E. Barley Boit" and knew then there was a journey to take.

That is when I started. Every painting is a continuation of the very first attempt to organize the smeared pigment on my canvases. The ideas and skill evolve, but the desire and drive were born all those years ago, as I listened to the whispers of magnificence."

23 Nov 2024Live From AHA! - November01:36:15

The Artists Index is an AHA! partner and this is the sixth in our series of livestream podcasts. The November AHA! was our second impromptu evening and open mic invitation to the South Coast's poets to help celebrate with us on Thursday, November 14th, from 6 to 7:30 pm. Once again, our livestream podcast was co-hosted by our livestream partner and friend Adam Katz, the owner of Play Arcade.

Our November AHA! Guests who joined us (Max Wikermayer and Ron Fortier) in the bar area at Play Arcade included Kate Frazer Rego. She was our podcast guest on Episode 83 and Episode 147. Kate also read a couple of her poems. It was the first live poetry reading on our AHA! podcasts!

We also had an impromptu and very refreshing visit from Taber Academy students Ryan O’Donald and Hudson Flynn, who told us about their experiences in pottery class at Taber. These articulate young men encouraged two of their fellow students, Blake Appleton and Matty Levesque to join us. Their art instructors, Tricia Smith and Leslie Brannigan,  joined in soon after.

They offered their views on the local art scene, the Taber art curricula and the importance of the phenomenal creative community of New Bedford and the South Coast. Once again, it was loud and noisy with all the arcade games but we still had great conversation.

Play Arcade is "an old-school 80’s style arcade offering a full-service bar, craft-made drinks, and food..." and over 40 vintage arcade games and a rooftop deck overlooking the working waterfront in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park.

AHA! (Arts, History, Architecture) has presented New Bedford and the South Coast with free arts and culture nights. It celebrated its 25th anniversary this September! AHA! Nights are held every second Thursday of the month to recall and honor the nostalgic late shopping night offered in New Bedford from the 1940s through the 1960s. This revival has brought a new and lasting vibrancy to downtown.

19 Dec 2022Ep. 133: William Bradford00:51:05

Welcome, Kyle DeCiccio-Carey to In-Focus Podcast Number 132! Kyle is the Library Director at the Millicent Library in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, and speaks with us about celebrated Fairhaven resident and painter Lemuel D. Eldred.

This is the second of five, Fairhaven Cultural Council grant-supported podcasts with Kyle who will be telling us about some of the town’s artists from days gone by. Lemuel Eldred is a great artist to begin this mini-series of podcasts!

William Bradford was born in Fairhaven in 1823. He developed an interest in painting as a young man and taught himself to draw by copying drawings from a book of illustrations repeatedly. In the early 1850s, he started his own clothing retail store in New Bedford. However, his art distracted him from his business which eventually failed.

He took lessons with Albertus van Beest, a Dutch painter living in New Bedford, and set up a studio on Union Street in Fairhaven. After a small success in selling paintings of boats, he opened a studio in Boston.

Bradford had been inspired to visit the Arctic and after he found success in Boston he was able to finance several trips to Labrador in the 1860s. In 1869, he went further north along Greenland taking photographers with him.

In 1873, he published an account of the voyage using photographs to illustrate the volume. He would use the photographs of the seascapes taken in the Arctic as a guide to creating paintings. He noted that despite the power of the camera to photograph the terrain, the “glorious phases of color remain unexpressed” until he painted what the camera had captured.

His work may be seen at the New Bedford Whaling Museumthe Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA, and Harvard University’s Art Museum.

The Artists Index podcasts are part of the continuing history of the area’s art and culture. The podcasts are a record of this creative community’s artists. They are an excellent resource for everyone; artists, art educators, art industry professionals, scholars, genealogists, and, non-artists as well.

Their inaugural year was last July (2023) with a promise to bring, "a new kind of acoustic music festival... to downtown New Bedford!" 29 Jul 2024Ep. 191: Mason Terra00:49:57

Welcome Mason Terra, a South Coast Massachusetts abstract oil painter. He was born in Fall River, Massachusetts, and graduated from Westport High School. Mason went on to study archaeology at Bridgewater State University.

Mason Terra's passion since childhood has always been drawing. His architect father was a big influence. Doodling constantly, he created characters inspired by movies and games. Despite not taking any art classes, Mason continued to draw through high school and started researching contemporary painters in his senior year.

Although studying the subject at Bridgewater State University, it was during the pandemic that he realized archaeology was not his true passion. Creating works of art, on the other hand, was! After the pandemic, he switched his major at Bridgewater State University to studio fine arts and has continued to paint ever since.

He has had his work published and has been represented in gallery exhibits. Mason is a Brazilian Jiu-jitsu instructor.  and has been for almost 8 years. He trains every week and finds parallels between painting and Jiu-jitsu.

Mason speaks with The Artists Index’s cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, about his continuing journey as a painter. This episode was recorded at our recording studio at Spectrum Marketing Group at  Howland Place in New Bedford.

18 Mar 2024Ep. 184: John Walker & Putnam Murdoch00:58:15

Welcome, to Podcast Episode 184 featuring John Walker and Putnam Murdock. They are friends and a singer-songwriter team who also work together as playwrights. John has, as he describes, "some experience writing screenplays" and Putnam is a seasoned singer-songwriter and teacher.

Putnam Grafton Murdock has performed throughout the US and is a middle school music and theatre teacher at  Friends Academy in Dartmouth, Massachusetts. They have completed one stage play “A Friend’s One Man Show” and are working on another play incorporating Putnam’s music background. The play, however, is not a traditional musical.

As of this podcast episode recording, “A Friend’s One Man Show” has been through one table reading at Friends Academy in 2021 and a staged reading at Moses Brown High School in Providence, Rhode Island in 2023. Their creative process has evolved since they began writing together in the fall of 2019 before the pandemic. When the pandemic started, they discovered they could meet more often online.

John Daniel Walker is a California State University, Northridge graduate and a transplanted Fairhavenite from San Diego, California. According to John, "While the platform was a bit impersonal at first, we took the opportunity to dedicate ourselves to the creative process which, supplemented our therapy sessions that were no longer taking place." The process has allowed them to take time, revise, and edit often. it also allowed the duo to include their most honest selves in the characters.

According to the friends and playwrights, while publication is a dream for the play, their goal has been to create and steep themselves in the process of writing. As a touring artist, Putnam started as a professional musician with the Colorado rock and roll band Chief Broom. He was the frontman. The group achieved a slot on the 1997 H.O.R.D.E tour, appeared in festivals at Red Rocks Amphitheater and sold out venues throughout the western United States.

After graduating with a songwriting degree from Berklee School in Music in 2002, Murdock launched a solo career and has since traveled across the country performing with artists such as Martin Sexton, Taj Mahal, Ben Taylor, Gregory Alan Isakov, and Kaki King. Putnam Murdock describes his music as being steeped in old-time folk, country, and blues.his songwriting presents an honest voice of Americana music. As a one-man band or a full ensemble, the intimacy remains obvious in his contemporary sonic collages or classic ballads. His fourth studio release, "Long Time To Make Old Friends, was recorded at Bunker Studios in 2022.

John Walker and Putnam Murdock speak with The Artists Index’s cofounder, documentarian, and podcast host, Ron Fortier, about their collaboration and interests.. 16 Aug 2021Ep. 90: Mark Barry01:08:29
Welcome painter Mark Barry to In-Focus Podcast Number 90. Mark paints ordinary things, things that he’s discovered aren’t so ordinary at all.

As he relates, “In a world that often seems to be twisting, turning and chaotic, to capture just a second in time or a fleeting glimpse of motion in a painting allows for a semblance of stability. Figures in a landscape, working in a garden, sailing a boat or an interior scene of a family at dinner, in each painting I try to make the connections between the human forms and the environment.”

Whether it’s through his emphatic use of color or line, the exaggeration of an arm, a facial expression or a gently curving road, guiding a cyclist through a country landscape, each element of a painting is connected.
