21 May 2019Episode 37 - Sound of Hockey Takes the Throne00:55:38

With the Stanley Cup Final on the horizon, and Game of Thrones now controversially over, Sound of Hockey comes through with another solid episode.

This week, the guys give you some non-NHL news (Seattle stuff, Memorial Cup update, IIHF World Championships chatter, AHL Calder Cup conversation), before diving headlong into the Conference Finals.

Naturally, the overlooked handpass that led to a Sharks overtime game-winning goal gets plenty of discussion, as John predictably defends his beloved San Jose squad. Meanwhile, Andy and Darren attack the necessity of expanded video review, and try to come up with ways to solve this newfound problem, without being too knee-jerk reactionary. The guys also discuss the shocking rumblings out of Ottawa that Patrick Roy is being considered for their coaching job.

Finally, the show moves into its segments, with the triumphant return of Goalie Gear Corner, You Don't See That Every Day, Tweets of the Week, and John gets HILARIOUSLY duped in Weekly One-Timers.

06 Feb 2020Episode 72 - Wade Returns00:53:12

Andy has been Wally Pipped again by Wade, who makes his triumphant return to Sound of Hockey for Episode 72, which is an enjoyable listen, if we do say so ourselves.

Lots of Seattle talk in this one, with recaps of Krakengate, NHL Seattle's Science of Scouting event, and more.

Plus, plenty of fun banter about the Battle of Alberta and how glorious it has been, Alex Ovechkin continuing to climb the scoring ranks, and the Sutter family taking over the "family" scoring race.

Segments this week include You Don't See That Every Day, Goalie Gear Corner, Bad Boys, and Weekly One-Timers.

05 Nov 2019Episode 59 - Featuring Ray Ferraro01:05:51

HUMONGOUS EPISODE ALERT!

This week, the guys have the pleasure of speaking with none other than Ray Ferraro, superstar analyst for TSN and NBCSN, and also an 18-year NHL veteran. With Ray, the guys dive pretty deep into his takes on what to watch out for when Seattle's franchise gets up and running. Plus, plenty of discussion about his career as a broadcaster and some of his best moments behind the mic. The interview with Ray is very much worth the price of admission.

Also in this episode, lots of fun banter between John, Andy, and Darren about such topics as youthful skill, NHL Seattle news (that isn't really news this time), and David Pastrnak getting into a minor car accident, then posing for a picture with the other driver.

Segments this week include Goalie Gear Corner, Bad Boys, Let's Get Quizzical, and Weekly One-Timers.

26 Aug 2022Episode 202 - A Quick Late-Summer Jaunt00:27:49

This week's episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast is a quick one but a fun one. With minimal Kraken news to discuss, John, Andy, and Darren focus on the hockey world as a whole.

They start with a brief World Junior Championship discussion, then move to a WHL Update, which focuses on Portland's completion of its re-brand, which many folks have argued looks quite similar to Kraken colors.

Next, they move on to segments, which this week features Bad Boys, Goalie Gear Corner, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week.

FYI, the next couple weeks will be a little different, with interviews being the focus, but there will still be content coming over that time.

Also discussed on this show, USA Hockey has released its latest data, and Washington State has predictably seen quite an uptick.

Nonetheless, they hope that you get a bit of a mental break while listening to this episode, as there's some fun to be had as well.

The guys interviewed Stu Barnes before things really escalated locally in Seattle, and it is a fantastic interview. Stu talks about his long and very successful NHL career, being a pro scout for NHL Seattle, and much more. You will definitely enjoy this interview.

26 Sep 2018Episode 3 - The Gritty-est Episode Yet + A Big Day for Seattle00:54:05

The third episode of Sound of Hockey is a fun one!

With the ENORMOUS NEWS of the Seattle City Council officially voting 8-0 in favor of the KeyArena project, the guys are in a particularly chipper mood for this one. Helping that mood even more is the Philadelphia Flyers' revelation of their new mascot, Gritty, which has taken the hockey world by storm. Together, John, Andy, and Darren break down both topics in detail.

Additionally, the guys "enjoy" a little pre-season hockey talk and discuss the prospects that they're each keeping their eyes on during this otherwise meaningless stage of the current campaign.

Finally, each host gives his own opinion of which under-the-radar NHL team is most likely to make an unexpected run this season, which quickly deteriorates into unintentional season previewing for the Atlantic and Pacific Divisions.

25 Oct 2018Episode 7 - Our first guest is... DAVE TIPPETT!!!01:22:42

HUMONGOUS EPISODE THIS WEEK!

The first ever guest on Sound of Hockey is Dave Tippett, former NHL player, head coach, Jack Adams Award winner, and current advisor for NHL Seattle. Trust us, you won’t want to miss this one whether you’re a Seattle-based hockey fan or not.

With Dave, the guys - John, Andy, and Darren - talk extensively about Tippett's experience working on the Seattle project, but they also get into some pretty good hockey talk in general. Tippett shares some awesome stories from his time coaching the Dallas Stars and Arizona Coyotes, explains his metrics for evaluating players, and even tells us what the Dave Tippett blow-up looks like. Oh, and he explains the context of this beautiful video.

Also in this episode, a recap of Peter Laviolette’s press scrum in which he donned a life-like bull mask, a riveting update on where the trees around KeyArena are being moved to (oh yes, it’s riveting), a check-in on some of the former WHL players that have reached the NHL.

The guys also debate whether the Colorado Avalanche and Carolina Hurricanes are for real, unravel the irony of the Kenya Ice Lions story, and consider the impact of a possible merger between the CWHL and NWHL.

BONUS EPISODE!

The guys realized that it was going to be about a week and a half between episodes, and decided that was way too long to make you all wait. As such, they decided to give you a little something extra this week, with a SECOND EPISODE!

On this bonus episode, John, Andy, and Darren break down NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman’s recent press conference that was held right here in Seattle, and they discuss some of the highlights of that event.

15 Jan 2022Episode 170 - Feeling for the Boys00:59:08

The guys are back in BarrDown Studios for Episode 170 of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, which brings the shenanigans up a notch!

The Seattle Kraken are in the midst of an eight-game losing streak, and John, Andy, and Darren are recording fresh off of Thursday's loss to the St. Louis Blues. But despite the miserable spiral of the Kraken, the guys are feeling surprisingly optimistic about the future of the team. So, if you're a Kraken fan needing a lift, this is the podcast for you!

This episode starts with some Wes McCauley silliness, followed by discussion about Kodak Black taking the hockey world by... storm. It then shifts to the outlook of the Kraken for quite a while, before turning to the hockey world as a whole.

Plenty of discussion about the Team USA Olympic roster (which includes Matty Beniers), Tuukka Rask returning to the Bruins, and Evander Kane somehow still being pursued.

09 Sep 2022Episode 204 - Featuring Chris Peters00:47:49

The boys got the band back together (sort of) by having Chris Peters on for his record fourth SOH Podcast interview. It's another wonky format for this show, as the episode revolves almost entirely around the interview, but there's lots of good stuff from Chris here.

Peters, the prospect guru for FloHockey.tv, gives his opinions on the Kraken prospect pool and his outlook for guys like Matty Beniers and Shane Wright. He has an interesting take on where he thinks Wright should play this coming season, which you may find controversial. But, he does give good reasoning to support his argument, which should provide good food for thought.

Sound Of Hockey will be back to its regular format for next week's show, but the guys think you'll really enjoy the interview with their good pal on this one.

In this episode of Sound of Hockey, aside from tons of reactionary discussion from Andy, John, and Darren about the hiring, Francis himself actually makes a brief cameo, as Andy had a few minutes to chat with him one-on-one following his introductory press conference.

Aside from all the GM talk, of which there is plenty, the guys also discuss an interesting beer league incident that occurred this past week in an effort to determine whether or not Darren was in the wrong. Don't worry, they do manage to keep their pants on, unlike a certain hockey player that wore #22 and a certain cartoon duck.

John, Andy, and Darren break down some of the latest news from NHL Seattle, with the most noteworthy item being the naming of an AHL affiliate franchise apparently on the near horizon. They also analyze the blockbuster trades that sent Jake Muzzin to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Nick Bjugstad to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and share some of the chatter regarding additional high-profile trade targets at the upcoming deadline.

25 Jan 2022Episode 172 - Featuring Karson Kuhlman00:58:29

The guys cover a LOT in this episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, and in the process, they introduce you to the newest member of the Seattle Kraken, Karson Kuhlman. Kuhlman was claimed off waivers from the Boston Bruins last week, so he talks about the whirlwind it has been to get to Seattle and get acclimated to his new team and city. He also shares some thoughts on playing for the UMD Bulldogs and the Bruins and explains why Darren is wrong about Duck, Duck, Grey Duck.

Aside from the chat with Karson, the guys also dig into the last three Kraken games since the previous episode, in which Seattle won two out of three against the Sharks, Blues, and Panthers. John, Andy, and Darren are especially amped up about the outcome of the Florida game. They also talk about the Coachella Valley Firebirds jersey and Darren defends Jeremy Lauzon again.

Before getting to the Kuhlman interview, they dig into the very difficult topic of racism in hockey, hoping that the conversation can fuel even the smallest change in a few folks out there.

Aside from the very fun interview with Julie, there’s just generally good banter this week, with some Seattle updates, another coach getting fired and quickly replaced, memories from the KHL All-Star Game, and some serious consideration about whether Alex Ovechkin is the best goal scorer of all time. John also forces Darren to talk about the Blackhawks for some reason.

Featured on this episode is Alison Lukan, an outstanding writer for TheAthletic who covers the Columbus Blue Jackets with an analytical flair. From Alison, John and Darren learn how she uses that analytical approach to tell her story, while still connecting with a broad hockey audience, and even how she uses her knowledge to connect with John Tortorella. She also gives tons of great Torts anecdotes and gives her opinions on the CBJ trades, so you won't want to miss this interview.

Also in this episode, the guys give a thorough review of the fantastic event that was the Seattle Hockey Analytics Conference and what they took away from that, before eventually diving into such segments as "You Don't See That Every Day," "Weekly One-Timers," and "Games On the Radar." 11 Nov 2022Episode 213 - The Shortcomings of Darren (Also, the Kraken Are Streaking!)00:38:01

On the latest episode of the Sound Of Hockey Podcast, the guys consider an important rhetorical question, wondering which of the three hosts--John, Andy, or Darren--you, the listener dislikes. Once they're done waxing poetic, they jump into Kraken talk, recapping Seattle's last three games and discussing this current five-game win streak.

That talk leads to an interesting Hype-o-thetical about the Trade Deadline and how the Kraken might approach that.

Once they're done with Kraken talk, the guys to a WHL Update, then dive into segments.

Segments this week feature Goalie Gear Corner, Bad Boys, Weekly One-Timers, and Tweets of the Week.
