It shapes us into alert, open-minded people who see the world in its true colors – not just as a physical place full of diverse cultures and people, but something much more subtle. Every traveler is changed by the experiences he or she has during the trip.

20 Jul 2022 | Ethics in Volunteer Tourism with Nora Livingstone | 01:09:19
Volunteer travel has its roots in the "voluntourism" through which people volunteer on projects abroad. Volunteer travel has been reimagined as a social enterprise model with a focus on working within local communities and creating value for them, rather than for the volunteers themselves. Volunteering abroad, especially in developing countries, has become a necessary experience for many people who label themselves as 'world citizens'. However, like any other growing industry, volunteer tourism brings with it new experiences and new problems. Christine’s guest today is curious, an animal-lover, an a feminist. Nora Livingstone is the CEO & Co-Founder of Animal Experience International. Her work has taken her to over 45 countries, including Oman, Sierra Leone, Guatemala, and Mongolia. Nora is a qualified Crisis Counselor and holds FEMA certifications in leadership and deployment during natural disasters. Nora and Christine talk about the ethics of volunteer travel, consent based tourism and what that means to her having a values align business and her commitment to addressing social issues, and how we can understand white privilege narratives that exist in companies like ours, that are run by white women.

10 Aug 2022 | Connecting Trees To Travel With Elkie Nicholas | 00:58:26
Just like people have a carbon footprint, trees have one too. If a tree is cut down for lumber, it is the same as a person who burned the furniture in the living room from the house — releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. But trees can also generate CO2. Elkie Nicholas is a tree hugging, eco-warrior with a tenacious entrepreneurial spirit. A visual communicator and brand builder who has worked in a variety of sectors, ranging from fashion to packaging, education, travel, and technology. She has created numerous award-winning, feel-good products and brands, but is now channelling her extensive experience and knowledge into supporting the fight against climate change through the creation of Trees4Travel in a new era of mindful travel.

21 Sep 2022 | The Role of Women In Leadership with Iris Serbanescu | 00:59:59
The world is awakening to what women can bring and being a successful woman in business means taking on this mantle and sharing it to encourage others, and using your position as a role model to those looking to be successful. After all, each woman gets to determine what success means to her, what she believes makes her life satisfying and fulfilling. Women define success, especially success in business, by the rules that others set. Sometimes women are stuck with a single goal and define their lives around that one goal, when there are actually several stages to success over the course of a lifetime. Keep in mind that you will have different definitions of success at different times of your life. Iris Serbanescu is an adventure travel enthusiast and champion for gender equity in the tourism industry, as proud founder of wmnsWORK, the tourism industry’s first 12-week business accelerator for early-stage women/non-binary entrepreneurs.

Women travelers are creating multiple communities of their own, as well as coming together to demand rights and representation. In an era where solo women travel and sustainable tourism are moving from trend to norm, communities are all the more critical for informing, inspiring, and empowering women to travel well. Carolyn Ray believes that anything is possible when you set your intention and follow your intuition. After 25 years in consulting, most recently as the CEO of Interbrand Canada, she gave up everything she owned to travel full-time after a transformative trip to Kenya with her daughter in 2018. The following year, through a series of coincidences, she unexpectedly became the owner of JourneyWoman, the beloved women’s solo travel publication founded in 1994 to empower women with travel as a shared passion.
