Today I am bringing you my friend, Rachel. Rachel shares generously about her first pregnancy experience that ended in a miscarriage at 9 weeks. 

Through that experience she learned how to get clear with her intentions, tap back into herself, and how to nourish and take care of her body.

When her and her husband consciously conceived their son, Brighton, she was clear that she wanted a natural birth at home. 

She faced all of her fears head on and found complete surrender as she entered the birth portal. She even switched midwives at 42 weeks because they would not support a home birth beyond that. At 42 +1, with a new midwife, her birth was a swift 4 hours of extreme intensity before he emerged.

Rachel is re-birthing herself (as so many new mothers do) transitioning from a pharmacist and Associate clinical professor to soon-to-be graduate of Rachelle Seliga's Innate Traditions Postpartum Care Certificate Training Program. Her books are now open for clients if you are lucky enough to live in Southern Maine.

"At 19, my fatherhood journey began. Inside a hospital, my healthy son from a previous relationship was born. Right away I knew that the only way I could be a good father was to be happy and healthy.

Passionate, about health and my own self discovery, my desire to learn brought me many places. It was on this path that I met Kirsten, who deepened my way of thinking and broadened the spectrum of what I thought was possible.

Meeting her opened my eyes to alternative ways of living and when the time seemed right we explored what it would look like if we had a child of our own.

Through trusting my partner and the birth process itself, we chose a home birth, in our attempt to reclaim responsibility for our own health.

Now we live off grid in the foothills of the White Mountains as we explore how to be better participants in the natural world.

I am a teacher, homesteader, dedicated learner, aspiring men’s group facilitator, but most importantly I am a father. Here is my birth story."

Today's episode focuses on healing from birth trauma. Birth debriefing, like all of my offerings, is a very individually tailored experience. Integrating your birth experience is multilayered. 

Do you need one? In my opinion, every woman should take the opportunity to tell her experience in its totality, without interruption or judgment, as soon as she feels ready. Birth is a sacred rite of passage. No matter what does or doesn’t happen, it changes who you are multidimensionally. It is normal to need safe space and plenty of time to integrate what you experienced.

Today's guest is Diana Forsell Tayan. Diana is a writer, speaker, and host of the Healing Birth Podcast, now in its fifth season. Her podcast is popular in over 36 countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

She is the Co-Founder of Healing Birth, a perinatal support organization dedicated to supporting women in various ways who have experienced birth trauma. Diana is trained with Birthing from Within as a Birth Story Listener, and offers one on one, non-clinical support to mothers who seek her help to process their birth experiences.

Diana’s passion and commitment for this work comes from her own personal experience with a traumatic birth, its aftermath, and ultimately, her healing.

She is a mother of two sons, and lives with her family on Kauai, Hawai’i.

My online Village sister and friend, Diana, asked if she could interview me about my breastfeeding journey. Of course I said yes! It was timely as our journey just concluded after 22 months of boob-on-demand.

With transparency I share about Kian's lip and tongue tie, using a nipple shield for the first 6 weeks, engorgement, body shame, and the not-so-often talked about shocking experience when breasts go from a sexual organ to feeding machines and how to integrate this new expansion. 

Honestly, I barely scratch the surface with our journey but it felt really good to share what I did.

Emma has three incredible birth stories to share with you. Her first was a hospital induction that narrowly escaped the full cascade of interventions. Her second a humbling redemptive home birth and her third a home birth with a possible shoulder dystocia. Her midwife used her expertise and calm demeanor to resolve this quickly and Emma was able to welcome her baby into her body without outside intervention.

In her own words:

"I'm a wife and a mother to 3 beautiful babies, and new to homeschooling.

I'm a nurse taking a temporary halt to focus on the best job in the world: caring for my babies.  

I used to be stuck in that textbook, allopathic healthcare mindset. I mean, isn't that what you learn in nursing school?

While raising my firstborn something shifted in me. My gut told me something was wrong. I found myself researching more of the holistic lifestyle. 

When I got pregnant with my second I didn't feel safe planning to be in the hospital. That was the turning point for my last two pregnancies, deliveries, and postpartum experiences.

Things I find important from what I've learned through my journey?

•To trust your instincts.

•Embrace your community in the chapter that you're in. Understand your resources and don't be afraid to reach out for help. 

•Lets welcome speaking about mental health, especially surrounding pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. No woman should feel the need to suffer alone."

Britney is in the postpartum phase of her mothering journey, enjoying, and growing with, her one year old daughter.

Join us for a first time dad's free birth story.

"My birth name given by my parents is Aaron David Cloutier and I am so excited to have finally become a dad myself at the age of 52. Better late than never. 

I grew up with many brothers and sisters who have mostly all become mom's and dad's themselves so I guess I felt a family expectation as well. 

I believe I will bring a unique perspective to the pregnancy and birthing recollection not only because of my age and my family dynamics but also because of spending over two decades as a natural health practitioner. 

I am an Augusta, Maine native and graduate of Cony High School in 1990. I also received a bachelor of science in Health Education and Exercise Physiology at the The University of Maine at Orono in 1995. 

I moved on to Life College in Atlanta and began my chiropractic education and proudly finished my degree in the year 2000 at the remarkable Sherman College of Chiropractic in Spartanburg, South Carolina. 

Shortly after graduating I moved back to  Maine and opened my first chiropractic office in downtown Portland. It was there that I planted the roots of my long-standing vitalistic practice where to this day I promote relationship centered and personalized care through the philosophy, science and art of Chiropractic and supportive metabolic coaching. 

I now work and reside with my partner Anna along with our beautiful free birthed son whom we named Thomas Cade Cloutier. He makes me complete."

“I’m Anna, a native Floridian, now residing in Maine, the place where long winters have weathered my speedy nature into more balanced tides… I’m learning to slow down and root into this beautiful rugged landscape I have come to call home since 2017. 

The birth of my first child in January 2023 was an experience that brought to fruition a lifetime of spiritual practice, study of natural medicines and my aspirations to truly believe in our body’s innate intelligence. 

The wild birth I was so blessed to bear has transformed some of my fears into wisdom. The sacred birth space my partner and dear friend, a craniosacral therapist and radical birth keeper, held for me is one I would be so honored to help create for other women who are committed to doing the inner work required to birth without assistance.

Linda is an Australian birthkeeper dedicated to undisturbed birth. 

Her journey into the world of childbirth began in Hawaii in 2008, where she served as a homebirth midwife's assistant. She later became a doula and a mother to two daughters. 

After returning to Australia in 2013, Linda immersed herself in Kundalini Yoga and pursued a Bachelor's degree in Midwifery. 

She worked as a registered midwife in a hospital for three years but eventually realized that the environment did not align with her core values. Physiological birth is not honoured and respected in hospital, despite it being wonderful for true obstetric emergencies. 

Now, she supports pregnant women in a sovereign and empowering way. Linda chose to relinquish her registration to serve women with integrity, offering a non-clinical and non-medical approach. 

Unlike modern midwifery, she does not perform clinical tasks such as vaginal exams or heart monitoring, instead providing care that is authentic, traditional, and deeply spiritual. 

Linda also offers Traditional Hawaiian Lomi Lomi Massage, monthly prenatal gatherings, virtual consultations for birth preparation and birth trauma debriefs. 

Linda has also recently created an online self paced course called the Sacred Mother, a childbirth education course that flows through the seasons of pregnancy, detailing the options of care both within the obstetric model and sovereign paradigm.

Alexxis is a radical birth keeper, herbalist, and artist in Sedona, Arizona. During the freebirth of her son, the lack of feminine presence lead to her realizing that women supporting women isn’t just important, it is crucial to the healing of this world.

When labor started she found herself feeling shocked and it took some time to finally lean in to the sensations.

She tells how when she was in transition she found such relief from the women in her online community reflecting to her that everything sounded normal, that she was doing it and likely close to emergence.

The last three hours of her birth actualy felt enjoyable and medatative as she met the sensations full on.

Amanda is a mother to two children ages 5 and 8. 

It was the birth of her children that opened her to this sacred path of serving women. She feels the portal of birth was the opening to the journey she continues on today. 

While not a home birth, Amanda birthed her two children in the hospital alongside her family and midwives naturally and unmedicated. They were fast and furious births that has left her heart wide open ever since. 

Amanda is an Occupational Therapist specializing in women's pelvic health. After working as a traditional pelvic floor therapist and treating pelvic health conditions from a biomechanical approach she saw how some women just weren't getting better. 

She began to treat pelvic health differently and saw amazing results! She started to address the "stuff" that was stored in women's bodies. 

Through a somatic (body) based approach, Amanda helps women process stored emotions, stories, and unprocessed experiences that have been influencing and likely contributing to their physical health. 

Through the gentle modality of craniosacral therapy and the use of somato-emotional release techniques Amanda offers her clients a safe and sacred space to heal from the inside out. 

Amanda's private practice, Pearl Holistic Health, is located in Biddeford, Maine. She works with women through pregnancy, postpartum, and beyond.

"The epiphanies I received after witnessing the unassisted birth of my son run deep. To birth a life free from malpractices, or even observation is subversive to the system.

The implications of unassisted birth are practical, profound, and my wife is an anointed Goddess for doing it all on her own. She says birth is no big deal.

At the same time, this portal & rite of passage for woman, and for man is the ultimate raw experience. Having climbed Myticas, the highest, most precarious peak of Mount Olympus, sailed the Bermuda Triangle with one other crewman, traveled overland at unspeakably high speeds on superbikes with visions of my own mortality, etc., I can tell you that all of the beauty and tragedy I’ve experienced and witnessed pales in comparison to watching my Beloved birth our baby into my arms. Sami shares with us her two totally different birth experiences: Her first a 72 hour long home birth surrounded by her partner, dear friend, photographer, and two midwives and her second that was barely witnessed by even her partner after just a few hours of fast labor.

Sami references Yolande Norris-Clark's book Portal. (Highly recommended reading) She was gifted the opportunity to choose the path or fear or trust and she chose trust. The ripple effect of this is evident now in the way she leads her life.

Sami is a mother and a wife. She is a yoga teacher, studio owner, and former doula, with a Master's degree in Alternative Medicine, and the host of the podcast Mother Medicine, where she breaks down cultural myths around health.

She hopes other mothers will take from her two completely different birth stories the weight of this truth: That observation really is the first intervention.

Gina Mundy is an attorney that specializes in childbirth cases. For over two decades, she has analyzed the mistakes that are made during labor and delivery. 

Drawing on this knowledge, she has authored the book "A Parent's Guide to a Safer Childbirth" to help parents prevent these mistakes and have a healthy baby. 

Rather than merely getting involved after an unfortunate mistake was made, Gina has taken a proactive approach by getting involved before childbirth.

In this episode we talk about the importance of individualized care, continuity of care, and the crucial key to a safer childbirth: Prepare and educate yourself about the labor experience.

The two most important decisions you will make are who you choose to birth with and where you choose to birth.

Gina's has only ever had a handful of cases that were natural, spontaneous labors and did not involve the drug Pitocin or artificial rupture of membranes (breaking mom's bag of waters).

We hone in on what informed consent really means, how protocols do not always serve the individual woman and are not law. Different providers will have different opinions but ultimately the decision is up to the mother.

It is crucial to interview your providers and doulas and pick the team that shares your vision.

Lastly, we highlight how important it is for someone to document (written, audio, video) on behalf of the mother and baby.

In her capacity as legal counsel, Gina has closely worked with delivery teams whose care has been questioned following adverse outcomes. She has spent thousands of hours meticulously scrutinizing cases, conducting interviews with delivery teams, and thoroughly examining medical records to gain an in-depth understanding of every decision made during labor and delivery.

From a hospital birth to free birth - Listen to Katie tell her tale...

"I’m Katie, a sovereign mother of 2 boys living in central Maine. After having my first son, my life completely shifted and I began transforming into the woman this life has set out for me to be. I felt like my eyes opened up for the first time, to the lies and utter chaos I grew up believing about the world and “systems” around me.

Everyday, I’m doing the work to better myself as a woman, mother, and wife, but I am far from perfect! I am learning at each step of the way, and I see setbacks as stepping stones toward my better growth.

I finished the Radical Birth Keeper School by Freebirth Society in April of 2023, so I have newly begun to call myself a birth keeper & birth space holder.

My true passion is to guide other women, from all walks of life, to become the expert of their own bodies. I hope to be a lighthouse for women to remember the true power they have in taking radical responsibility for their lives in each and every way. I want to be there for women, to protect their sacred birth space and early stages of mothering. And I want to nourish & love on mothers while they rest and relish in the crucial postpartum time. I want to remind women that we are SAFE TO TRUST OUR BODIES!

Gwen is a mom of a 6, 5 and 1 year old living in Washington State after recently traveling the US in their RV and before that living in Australia.

She has a honors undergraduate degree in Sociology, a Masters in teaching, and a Spiritual Psychology coach & trauma specialist certification.

Gwen is the CEO and owner of her business, Connecting Conscious Collective, and is very passionate about supporting mothers to fully step into their power and create their intuitive desires.

Gwen had two very traumatic birth experiences which were the catalyst to her doing her inner work and learning about the subconscious mind & manifestation.

Using this knowledge, Gwen was able to manifest the empowered birth she desired, and have a healthy baby and healing birth experience - one that doctors had told her she should abort due to ‘high risk’.

Now, she is able to coach women from around the world on how they too can harness this power and have the empowered birth experience they desire.
