22 May 2021Episode 43: Splendid Chapman01:23:24

I wanted to focus on how Chris uses his films to tell stories and to discuss the planning and editing processes as much as the actual filming, though naturally some of those stories come through too. We focus in this episode on Chris's new films for the Season 14 and Season 8 sets.

I think you'll be blown away by Chris's natural enthusiasm for his work, as well as his passion for the subjects of his films.

Don't worry that this is episode 43 and the last one was 41. It's all gone a little bit wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey on us, but 42 will be along soon and it'll be worth waiting for.

Chris's work is all over the Doctor Who DVD and Blu-Ray ranges, and while the limited editions of the Blu-Rays can be hard to get hold of, they are slowly being re-issued and well worth the price of admission.

And if you can't get enough of Chris's work, you can also head over to https://www.bigfinish.com/, where he has written a number of audio plays.

The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 (off of An Unearthly Child) and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end

22 Sep 2022Episode 64: Just A Bit Too Far(t)?01:10:28

This episode largely focuses on the latter story.

04 Apr 2023Episode 75: Omnirumour 10th Anniversary Special Part 200:57:15

Here's part 2 of our Omnirumour 10th Anniversary Special.

On 29th March 2013, the DWO fan site said that 'a classic series related announcement' was coming and hinted that it was missing episodes related. In June of that year, the Bleeding Cool website ran a story suggesting that a large number of missing Doctor Who episodes had been found. Then Ian Levine tweeted about “three tons of evidence”. An e-mail, purportedly from a Radio Wiltshire DJ, but showing signs of mixed authorship was being passed between fans and excitement on the forums reached fever pitch. Lots of rumours were passed around and the number of episodes found was often said to be 90.

Finally in October the Radio Times announced that newly-discovered lost Patrick Troughton episodes would be made available for digital download within a week. It was proof, surely, that all the rumours were true? But after The Enemy of the World and The Web of Fear were released, that was it. And ten years later we still don’t know the truth of it, and people still discuss their theories on forums.

There’s a name given to all this madness - the Omnirumour. And on the tenth anniversary of it gaining broad publicity within fandom, I’m with two fellow-sufferers - Tim and Giles. We’ve all spent more time than we care to recount pondering these matters. In this episode of Something Who we’ll chew over what we know for sure, what can’t be true and some of the things that might be true. And finally give you our personal opinions.

22 Dec 2021Episode 53: First Christmas01:48:32

Richard arrives in the Something Who bunker and unfortunately breaks the fourth wall at the time of year you really struggle to get a builder.

This is our Christmas special, comparing the first Doctor Who Christmas episode of all - 1965's The Feast of Steven, Episode 7 of the epic Daleks' Master Plan - with the Christmas Invasion, the the first Christmas special of the modern era from 2005. 12 Jul 2020Episode 27: Top of the Block01:25:25

Richard, Giles and Paul are back for an examination of two Doctor Who stories that need to get to the penthouse suite. First we look at Seventh Doctor adventure Paradise Towers, before we discuss Ninth Doctor outing The Long Game. As ever, it's a wide-ranging chat that finds us in a surprisingly good mood and able to see both good and bad decisions made by both production teams.

So put on your Kang fright wig, your rezzie's shawl or your caretaker's peaked cap and order in a Kronkburger with cheese, as we examine the route to the top floor.

24 Jan 2021Episode 38: Regression of the Daleks01:34:31

After Richard welcomes special guest Gav Rymill to the Something Who bunker deep under the ruins of London, we settle into a discussion with Paul and Giles about two Dalek invasion stories: First Doctor tale The Dalek Invasion of Earth and the latest 13th Doctor adventure Revolution of the Daleks.

Gav is unique among guests to Something Who in having provided us with his own remix of the episode and you can thank him for the fact that this runs at less than two hours, while retaining all the key moments, when my original edit was considerably longer.

26 Feb 2021Episode 39: Hiding in Spacesuits01:54:01

Gav surprises us all with his return to the Something Who bunker, perhaps drawn by the siren call of wine and science. Along with Paul, Giles and Richard he discusses two Doctor Who stories with a connection to 1969: Third Doctor story The Ambassadors of Death, which was written in that year, and Eleventh Doctor outing The Impossible Astronaut / Day of the Moon, which is set in 1969, both with strong links to the space programmes of that era.

We try to stay on topic, but inevitably we stray into programmes of the same era and we give Amy's Crack a particularly thorough examination. Oddly, despite the fact that everybody had a go writing Ambassadors, it's Moffat's episodes that seem to have the most loose threads.

24 Apr 2020Episode 22: Jeremy Bentham00:57:54

Thanks to Giles, who introduced me to Jeremy Bentham, a very familiar name for Doctor Who fans, particularly of my generation.

Jeremy and I chat about the early days of fandom, his part in the formation of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, his work as a writer on Doctor Who Weekly and Doctor Who Monthly and his book Doctor Who - The Early Years. We also discuss his involvement in social events, such as conventions, the First Thursday Fitzroy Tavern evenings where Giles introduced us, and the launch party fan events he organised for the New Series.

And I couldn't resist the opportunity for a brief detour into the world of Missing Episodes.

21 Feb 2020Episode 14: Scary Mary00:48:20

Guess what? It's the return of Paul, fresh from his recent sojourn in LA, who joins Simon, Giles and Richard to review the latest episode of Doctor Who - The Haunting of Villa Diodati. Everyone loves Maxine Alderton's first entry to the canon and while we wonder how it took Chris Chibnall so long to find a script like this, we detour into Latin and Greek and, of course, Big Finish. It's our longest short episode by some distance!

23 Mar 2021Episode 40: Industrial Revulsion01:37:00

Richard invites Gav, Giles and Paul to meeting of podcast geniuses (and him). Then it's off for a look at 6th Doctor story The Mark of the Rani and 11th Doctor escapade The Crimson Horror, both revelling in a 19th Century setting.

Along the way we tell tales of our various calamitous meetings with one of the inspirations of the latter tale, Dr Matthew Sweet.

10 Mar 2023Episode 73: Doctor Who Am I?00:48:12

Here's another of our special episodes.

Over a year ago our podcast Twitter account was followed by Matthew Jacobs, the writer of the TV Movie. This was both exciting and terrifying in equal measure, as we'd just made an episode that featured the TV Movie, that had not been entirely complimentary. We became aware that Matthew was promoting an independent film called Doctor Who Am I? And recently Richard took the chance to watch it on DVD, though it's now widely available in the UK on a variety of platforms. So, excitingly, in this episode, Richard talks with Matthew and Vanessa Yuille who created the film together. This is funny and sometimes deep conversation about the nature of being a fan, with the added excitement of someone with a pneumatic drill attacking the outside of Matthew's apartment. We talk about Vanessa and Matthew's journey with the film, US fans and conventions, and we touch on Matthew's childhood connection with the with Doctor Who, when his father played Doc Holliday in The Gunfighters.

Thanks to Vanessa and Matthew for sharing your stories and for the generous donation of your time.

Follow them on Twitter: @vyuille, @MJBJacobs, @docwhoami

Doctor Who Am I? is widely available in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Am-I-Blu-ray/dp/B0BGPYV3SD/, also on Amazon Prime: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Am-Daphne-Ashbrook/dp/B0B8Q734H3/, Britbox https://watch.britbox.co.uk/ and ITVX https://www.itv.com/

13 Sep 2020Episode 29: Something Huw01:32:04

Autumn has arrived, the nights are drawing in and naturally our thoughts return once more to Doctor Who. At the same time, it's the end of the cricket season and the start of football and this time we're looking at Doctor Who's two great sporting encounters, starting with 5th Doctor's cricketing exploits in Black Orchid, followed by the 11th Doctor's footballing feats in The Lodger. And who better to help us with that than Huw Turbervill. Huw is a sports journalist and the Managing Editor of The Cricketer Magazine, as well as an occasional visitor to Gallifrey Base's Missing Episodes Megathread, where we met him. And so we've turned our podcast for one episode only into Something Huw, including a pastiche on Black Orchid, analyses of all of the Doctor's encounters with both games and Huw's encounters with some of our heroes in his journalistic career. 13 Mar 2020Terrance Dicks Panel00:45:27

Hoping to ease the disappointment surrounding the postponement of this weekend's Terrance Dicks Celebration event, I've dusted off this recording I made of a panel held at the London Comic Con last October celebrating Terrance's life and work. I hope it goes some way towards filling the gap.

The panel was hosted by Matthew Sweet, with contributions from Emma Reeves, Paul Cornell, Mike Tucker and Katy Manning.

The audio quality is frankly poor, but I've done the best I can to reduce the interference and with a bit of persistence and concentration it's entirely possible to follow the conversation.

This podcast is available entirely for free and I make nothing from it, but in the spirit of the Celebration event, I'm pledging to donate 10p for every download we get (up to a maximum of 500) to Terrance's chosen charity of Save the Children.

I think it's a great conversation and tribute to Terrance and I hope you enjoy it.

05 Mar 2020Episode 16: The Finale Solution01:18:20

Meanwhile Richard, Giles and Simon bring you our review of The Timeless Children, thoughts at the end of Series 12 and looking forward to future developments. 21 Jun 2020Episode 26: False Starts01:30:47

Richard, Giles and Paul are back and this time we're looking at debuts, and specifically debut stories where the Doctor is not treated as a classical hero. First we look at Sixth Doctor opener The Twin Dilemma and then we examine the Twelfth Doctor's initial story Deep Breath. Along the way we have a surprisingly wide-ranging chat about colonialism, bad science, Crimewatch, TV writers who go a bit mad when given the chance to do Sci-Fi, sexism and historical appropriation.

02 Dec 2023Episode 85: The Daleks in Colour00:52:55

You know how when you've been waiting months for a new episode of Something Who and then 3 turn up close together?

Just over a week ago on 23rd November 2023, Doctor Who's 60th anniversary, the highlight on BBC TV was The Daleks in Colour - a 75 minute reimagining of the first Dalek story specially colourised to help bring the story to life for a new generation. And less than a week later I had the good fortune to chat with 3 of the team responsible for making it - Benjamin Cook, the Editor, Rich Tipple, Lead Colourisation Artist and Timothy K Brown, Colourisation Artist.

It's a fun chat that goes into storytelling, why some of the creative choices were made, some of the difficulties involved and how they were overcome and what it's like to have your name in the same set of credits as William Hartnell.

It's taken us a few years, but here's Something Who podcast bringing up the ton - yes, it's our landmark 100th episode!

And to mark the occasion, rumours of his demise having been greatly exaggerated, we also have the triumphant return of podcast regular Paul., alongside fellow regular Giles, returning guest Rick and the ever present Richard.

In this episode, we chat briefly about what we can readily recall about the first 100 episodes of the podcast and what it's meant to us. Then we look at 4th Doctor story The Stones of Blood from Season 16, which in the next episode we'll pair with 12th Doctor story Under The Lake / Before The Flood from Series 9.

07 Jul 2021Episode 44: Educating Peter (and David)01:56:38

Gav's still trying to come to terms with his huge rant over The Gunfighters last episode. 02 Apr 2023Episode 74: Omnirumour 10th Anniversary Special00:56:14

27 Nov 2020Episode 33: Dream Teams01:20:44

Steven Schapansky is back  for a second stint on Something Who, and we've got a new conceit for the occasion. Steven and Richard both choose a pair of Dream Teams from behind the camera, one for the original series and one from the new. And then, armed with our Dream Teams, we think about stories that we'd like to remake using their talents.

Our original series dream team will consist of a Producer / Script Editor / Director / Writer / Designer and Incidental Music Composer, while our new series dream team will be a Showrunner / Exec / Producer / Writer / Director / Designer and Composer.

And it wouldn't  be Something Who if  we didn't use that concept as a framework for other discussions.

We welcome back Ellie (a.k.a. 17 Apr 2020Episode 21: Spawning Prawn01:12:28

After a dalliance with Tennant era grandiosity, it's back to the standard Something Who format, comparing the 4th Doctor story The Invisible Enemy from 1977 with 2009's Tenth Doctor story The Waters of Mars. Yes, you guessed it, it's our Virus Special.

30 Jul 2020Episode 28: Rodents & Wasps01:25:56

After Stevie makes his first non-squeaking appearance on Something Who (or should that be Something Degu?), Paul, Giles and Richard are back for our Giant Animals special. OK, it's a fair cop guv'nor, really it's our Christopher Benjamin appreciation episode. Up first it's Fourth Doctor adventure The Talons of Weng-Chiang, followed by Tenth Doctor outing The Unicorn and the Wasp. We find more to say about the former than the latter, but we seem to have enjoyed both. And while Paul appears to say nothing remotely controversial about either story, Richard dives straight into the fray with his size 12s.

So put on your best bib and tucker, order up a Hansom cab, or a Rolls, and prepare to hob nob with the top nobs at The Palace Theatre and a country manor house.

27 Dec 2023Episode 88: 2023 Drill Down01:06:41

(Note: If you tried to listen to this episode and it cut out suddenly around the 50 minute mark, it seems like something went wrong with the upload to the server. Sorry about that. Anyway, please try again now. Seems to be working properly following a reload)

Once again, it's time to share a few highlights from the past year of Something Who as we bring you a compilation from our episodes in 2023.

And there's a lot to choose from. In addition to our regular presenting team of Richard, Paul, Giles and Simon, we had a lot of guests this year, including Tim Burrows from The Missing Episodes podcast on our 10th anniversary discussion of the Omnirumour. We chatted to an actual Doctor Who writer in Matthew Jacobs, along with Vanessa Yuille, who together made the wonderful fan film Doctor Who Am I? Both Matthew and Vanessa were almost upstaged by a pneumatic drill, but saw the funny side.

We spoke with Steve Manfred about his friendship and collaboration with writer Neil Gaiman. Elizabeth Morton spoke with us about her family connections to Doctor Who, as well as her writing career. And Benjamin Cook, Rich Tipple and Timothy K Brown discussed their work on colourising the first Dalek story for the 60th anniversary.

Simon Guerrier joined us to chat about The Rescue and The Eleventh Hour, while providing lots of insight from his research into writer and story editor David Whitaker.

We hope you enjoy these clips and, if you do, please peruse our back catalogue for the full versions of all of these items and perhaps you'd like to leave us a review on Apple Podcasts or similar platform.

The opening music is Three Guitars Mood 2 and, yes, that is Richard playing the ukulele and kazoo on possibly the worst ever version of the Doctor Who theme tune at the end.

After an interlude for several special episodes, we've brought back the original Something Who team, and after a close encounter with an AI bot we chat about a couple of stories that are capitalist allegories. First we'll look at 4th Doctor story The Sunmakers from Season 15, and after that we'll examine 12th Doctor outing Oxygen from Series 10. This episode consists the first half of that conversation, featuring The Sumakers. Next time we'll have more to say on The Sunmakers, then move onto Oxygen

After it turns out that Richard isn't an android after all (who knew?), he welcomes back Paul and Giles to look at a pair of stories that we might describe as historical romps: 4th Doctor story The Androids of Tara, followed by 12th Doctor adventure Robot of Sherwood. 26 Nov 2023Episode 83: Sketch00:02:15

I noticed on listening this morning that I'd somehow truncated the opening sketch from episode 83, which would be less of a problem if it was my usual hackery, but since it was contributed by our guest, Simon Guerrier, I thought I should give you the chance to hear it in all its glory. It wasn't much of a cut, but at least it has a proper beginning now.

Here's Something Who, Episode 20, and this time Richard talks with Steven Schapansky about Missing Episodes because... well, in the circumstances, it would have been rude not to. Steven, co-host of Radio Free Skaro, is a fellow Missing Episodes obsessive and the conversation covers the whole gamut from how we discovered that some Doctor Who episodes were missing, the recovery of stories in the 80s and 90s, the discovery of telesnaps and off air recordings, leading to audio releases, fan reconstructions and animations, the hunt for the remaining films and, inevitably, the Omnirumour. 06 Mar 2023Episode 72: Steve Manfred01:35:42

After our chat last time about the story The Doctor's Wife, we were contacted by long time fan and sometime Something Who listener Steve Manfred, who had something of a hand in the genesis of the story.

Steve discusses his friendship with the author Neil Gaiman, how that led to him having a consultancy role on Neil Gaiman's two Doctor Who stories, and he corrects some of more egregious mistakes, as well as answering some of the questions we had posed.

Thanks to Steve for sharing his stories and for the generous donation of his time.

Welcome to our second Something Who Live Show, with host Richard, Big Finish writer and Missing Episodes podcast star, Paul, and noted astrophysics author and our own Dr Science, Giles. We reprise a more spontaneous format that riffs on our remit of comparing stories from the old and new series, with a bit of a Christmas spin. The actual live show on YouTube had its technical problems, but here's the audio, recorded at source.

Back again with a companion piece to last week's chat with Chris Chapman. I plucked up the courage to ask, Toby was extremely kind to say yes, so here's a conversation with Toby Hadoke about his experience in front of the camera on the extra films for the Doctor Who DVD and Blu-ray series.

Toby discusses the background to his involvement in the range, and we talk about Living With Levene, Looking for Peter, Hadoke vs HAVOC, Treasures Lost and Found, A Weekend With Waterhouse, The Doctor Who Cookbook Revisited and Looking For Lennie. Toby also mentions a documentary from the upcoming Season 14 set, Whose Doctor Who Revisited. We also get to hear about the genesis of Moths Ate My Doctor Who Scarf and many other tales. I know what you're saying. What happened to Episode 30? Rest easy, Something Who fans, it's coming. Rather like Seasons 10, 15, 17 and 19 among others, our episodes are coming out in a different order from how we recorded them. And here's a treat for you.

Earlier in the year, Jeremy Bentham joined us on Something Who to chat about his long association with fandom, including his association with the Doctor Who Appreciation Society and his work on Doctor Who Magazine (or Weekly and Monthly as it was known then).

Jeremy returns to talk with me about 4 figures who made the programme that he met in the early years of fandom, plus another who he wishes he had met. Along with his personal memories, we talk about the impact that Patrick Troughton, Douglas Camfield, Ian Scoones, Dennis Spooner and David Whitaker had on Doctor Who and its fandom.
