03 Feb 2023Overwhelm, taking action and taking care, for new social workers00:08:26

This week the UK government released a statement on Strategy for Children's social care.

This episode is for new social workers who feel overwhelmed, frustrated and disappointed.

There will always be actions you can take, however small they seem.

Relevant links:

I mention a webinar led by Matthew Gibson - Department of Social Work and Social Care - University of Birmingham

His book is here:

https://policy.bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/the-emotions-of-pride-and-shame-in-child-and-family-social-work

A note on anti racism training:

As a woman racialised as white, I recognise it is problematic for me to recommend anti racism training for local authorities without addressing some nuance around this.

It is important to note that I do not believe anti-racism training is an exclusive 'answer' to racism in any way. It cannot be a tick box exercise and anti racism has to be completely embedded within an organisation, led by people who are part of the global majority.

I make the suggestion of requesting anti racism training in this podcast, because I am aware that many local authorities and organisations do not offer this as a starting point. Lack of clear anti racism training and support perpetuates harm caused by racism.  I say this with the acknowledgement that I have caused harm as a white social worker because of racism and lack of anti racism training and education.

I am open to conversations and learning and unlearning around this so please get in touch if you want to.

20 Sep 2023Racism and social work (TW: reflections on narratives involving murderer Letby)00:32:29

TW: Racism, death of children.

In this episode I talk about the convicted murderer, Lucy Letby. A nurse who murdered children whilst in her role in a hospital.

Lucy Letby is a white woman and although concerns were raised by consultants, they were not taken seriously by hospital staff and in this episode I talk about the institutional racism that contributed to harm caused.

I am reflecting on my own racism and anti-racist learning, which is automatically problematic as a white woman and there some timestamps below to help you navigate listening as I am aware the contents of this podcast will trigger racial trauma and that is not my intention.

If you would like to discuss or reflect on this episode please get in touch with me vicki@socialworksorted.com

Timestamps:

[00:06:00] I talk about my racism, internalised over time and the risk of racial trauma to global majority listeners that can happen when a white person centres their voice.

[00:07:30] I explain I am going to be talking about Lucy Letby, a murderer convicted in the UK of killing babies in intensive care units. TW: Racism, baby loss.

[00:12:00]  I talk about the comparison between Letby’s arrest and arrests made by people in the black community - again highlighted in a post by Liz Pemberton.

https://www.voice-online.co.uk/news/uk-news/2023/07/23/outrage-over-bus-fare-arrest-of-mum/#:~:text=The%20mother%2C%20who%20was%20handcuffed,not%20show%20the%20full%20picture. Article for reference please be aware this contains links to a video of the incident and I am unaware if the woman concerned has consented to this being shared.

02 Apr 2024Overworking, Somatics and Systemic Change with Tamu Thomas00:54:16

In this incredible conversation I chat to Tamu Thomas, transformational life coach and former social worker, specialising in helping women achieve work-life harmony by aligning with their nervous system for holistic well-being.

  • We talk about:
  • The systemic and structural oppression in social work
  • How to navigate the workplace as a new social worker
  • The value of regulating your nervous system

Tamu’s unique approach, rooted in somatic coaching and Polyvagal informed practice, empowers women to reconnect with their core selves, establish healthy boundaries, and build self-trust. Her work is particularly resonant in addressing the unique challenges faced by women of the global majority under what she describes as, "the trinity of oppression” - patriarchy, white supremacy and capitalism.

In Tamu's words, "We don’t need more self improvement, we need systemic change”. Her insights are essential for anyone seeking fulfilment, meaningful connection and joy in today's fast-paced world.
