20 Apr 2021Don't Spray Your Dick00:45:26

How do you apply fragrance? Well, that is a many-pronged question, pondered for many years and with varying degrees of authority on the matter.  Tl;dr: it depends. How far do you want your scent to emanate? How many enemies do you have? Why doesn't perfume ever last as long as you want it to, no matter how much you douse yourself?  (That we can help with.) Your hosts will answer these queries and many more things that no one and everyone asked us on the matter, imparting our fragrant knowledge on the most effective ways to smell like whatever it is you wish to smell like.

30 May 2023The Best Non-Visual Compliments01:04:06

The best compliments are ones where you feel understood, known, and sometimes maybe a little too seen. This is where fragrance serves as a homing beacon. Here is a fun little ep about the most memorable scent compliments we've received, as well as copious encouragement to compliment other peoples' fragrances. Why? Because it's nice and makes people feel nice, and sometimes it's just nice to smell nice things and say that out loud.

Matthew Herman, the co-founder of everyone’s favorite candle brand, Boy Smells, joins us to talk about creating the candle brand with his partner David, pivoting from fashion to fragrance (and underwear), what happens when Kacey Musgraves slides into your DMs (the Slow Burn collaboration, that's what) and why a “genderful” lifestyle is so much more enriching than genderless. 09 Feb 2021Candle Chemistry In Otherland01:17:34

You know those cool, eye-catching candles that pop up on your Instagram feed (usually in a very aesthetic post) and are so VIVID that it's like you can smell them from your phone screen? Yeah, we know them too. Known for their striking packaging and uniquely quirky and luxurious scents that can fill your studio apartment as well as they can fill your chalet,  Otherland creates interesting home scents for  interesting people. Brand founder Abigail Stone comes on the pod to talk about what it's like creating a candle brand, having the world's most prestigious perfumers making their scents, and the thoughtful engineering that actually goes into candle parts and packaging that are the difference between candles that behave and candles that suck (you know the ones).

31 May 2022Wearing Scent (Manipulatively)01:07:11

Now that another Memorial Day has been memorialized, that means it's officially summer — the season of skin. And smelling  scents on other people's skin. So, that got us thinking... what kinds of scents do people compliment the most? And what do they have in common? How do certain scents develop a reputation beyond their intended context? And most importantly, what scents can we wear  manipulatively for nefarious or promiscuous purposes? Here are our personal findings, from our experience.

04 May 2021The Aroma Of Our Addictions01:11:12

Addictions are the hedonistic and sometimes dangerous expression of our indulgences, so it should be of little surprise that scents are a huge indicator, enabler,  and even keeper of our fondness for these experiences that may be toxic in nature—but definitely not in this fragrance concept. That's the sweet spot that Akro hits, a new perfume brand from Anaïs Cresp, Jack Miskelly, and Olivier Cresp, the nose behind the six fragrances in their initial offering (and behind  Angel, Light Blue, Nina Ricci Nina, Black Opium—so many hits!!).  We speak with father-daughter duo Olivier and Anaïs about Akro's olfactory spin on some familiar addictions, and how indulging them through scent can be a powerful experience all its own.

It's 2023 and three years after launching this podcast, we have yet another maybe annual awards that acknowledge the year's triumphs and the year's flops, with minimal pivoting to scent trends, brand follies, and however else we were confused and flabbergasted by fragrance this past year.

02 Nov 2021One Planet's Air Is Another Person's Perfume01:03:11

Carbon emissions = bad. Perfume = good. This is the basic math behind Air Company's second product ever: AIR EAU DE PARFUM, a fragrance made from CO2 emissions. How do you make perfume from [gestures all around] the air?? We have Greg Constantine, co-founder of Air Company on the pod to tell us about his humble operation that literally turns carbon emissions into useful things like vodka, perfume, and jet fuel — all essential items for our planet's uncertain future.

12 Apr 2022The 7 Deadly Scents01:03:56

On this, the holiest week of tax season, we've decided to examine the sinnery of scents — specifically the seven deadly sins and what they would smell like. Also, beauty marketing has reached a new level of unawareness. Oh yes, and we get down to musing about which of the 7s we're personally guilty of, and which fragrances would scent a sin. That's all. Enjoy!

Oh, and we have merch now. The Smell Ya Later 2022 World Tour gear is live on our website.

07 May 2024Not A Podcast (feat. Romano Ricci of Juliette Has A Gun)00:54:42

Juliette Has A Gun's founder Romano Ricci may be more of a Mercutio in the Shakespeare-coded and metaphorical world of this episode. With Not A Perfume, Anyway..., Mmmm..., Ode To Dullness, and others, Juliette Has A Gun has undone haute parfumerie's formalities and proven that levity can be luxury as well. We speak with Ricci about the risk of launching an unserious fragrance brand in the height of mid-aughts fragrance culture, his roots in fragrance and fashion legacy, and how fragrance can be invisible armor.

28 Sep 2021Reinventing The Wheel With Cloud01:04:48

You asked, and we deliver. Not that wouldn't have thought to do so of our own accord, but it just so happens all our interests and obsessions align with the release of Ariana Grande Cloud 2.0 Intense —  the more dramatic newborn sibling to our beloved Cloud.  In this episode,  we review the new fragrance (obviously), we break down the nuanced differences between the Intense and the original, we disagree about the word "boyfriend," and also Dolly Parton's fragrance (sorry), we reinvent the fragrance wheel by inserting "cloud" as a scent profile category. Yes, we have it on good olfactive authority that Cloud is a unique and recognizable enough accord that its name deserves respect and promotion. Also because everyone seems to be clocking Cloud as a dupe for this or a "this is the only perfume people compliment on me" that. It's time. We graciously took it upon ourselves to name several contenders that illustrate exactly what we mean.

01 Feb 2022The Angel Legacy: From 'Shit On Shit' To The God Of Gourmands01:04:34

Mugler Angel is one of the most famous fragrances ever. The iconic star-shaped bottle is instantly recognizable as is its scent — unapologetically sweet, sticky, hot, and heavy. It gets in your nose, your eyes, your mouth, and sets up shop in your brain with all its gooey, candy-like floof.  Its overwhelmingly abundant make-up is what we affectionately refer to as "shit on shit." You either love it or can't stand it.

There's more to her than just dozens upon dozens of notes and accords, though, as we've learned and you can too, in this episode — like the genesis of the fragrance, what untraditional ingredients made it not just another fragrance but an innovation of what fragrance could be, what inspired the bottle, how many takes it took to get the scent right, and just how many goddamn flankers its spawned (a lot).

18 May 2021It Puts The Perfume On Its Skin01:16:37

"Skin scents" are a newly trendy fragrance aesthetique that we can all thank/blame the people who brought you  'no-makeup makeup' and con culture. Just kidding (maybe)! We've had a vague idea of what skin scents are—transparent, musky, "natural"-smelling, non-perfume-y fragrances that mold to the wearer's skin chemistry—but not what's actually in the juice. So we took it up with the molecule master Geza Schöen, perfumer and founder of Escentric Molecules. The fragrance brand's debut fragrance isolated Iso E Super, the molecule that started it all. This lab creation is what gives skin scents that  je ne sais quoi responsible for the radiant, ethereal, intimate quality that skin scents have come to be known for. Schöen gives us a breakdown of this molecule as well as all of the molecules in the Escentric Molecule line, along with comprehensive insight into synthetic aroma molecules and their value to the fragrance industry.

22 Feb 2022Why Does Everyone Want to Smell Rich?01:04:59

Those who know better know that money smells like balls, but when it comes to smelling rich, wealthy, or classy, people have opinions that may or may not be misinformation  set to a soundtrack of Lana Del Rey remixes on everyone's favorite clock app. It's a vibe, it's a mood, it's perhaps an ill-conceived aspiration that says nothing of wealth itself but the idea of a certain level of taste and what it means to live a life of conspicuous consumption. So, we stay wondering. Why does everyone want to smell rich, anyway?

27 Apr 2021Why Are We Still Describing Fragrances As OriEnTaL?00:48:53

You may have noticed how the co-hosts of this podcast audibly cringe every time we talk about a fragrance that is marketed as an "oriental" scent. It feels icky and wrong and way tone-deaf. Because it is. But why does the fragrance industry continue using such an outdated term in such a blasé matter-of-fact way? It's not like there aren't a ton of other more accurate descriptors that could be used to better explain a fragrance. It remains a mystery, however, one that more and more people are starting to rightfully question, ourselves included. While there isn't much discourse on this problematic topic, we reference this flare dot com article by Madelyn Chung for its in-depth research—a perfect springboard for your co-hosts to bounce off of and, as the kids say, go awf.

15 Sep 2020Everything We Know About Perfume (For Now)00:54:33
This is the Smell Ya Later perfume primer. In our careers as beauty writers and editors, we've sniffed a fair amount of fragrances and learned a fair amount of behind-the-scenes fragrance industry stuff, in general. Are we experts? God, no. But do we know more about perfume than the average mouthbreather? Yes. Here is a brain-dump of all that information so you will never again confidently say "sill-age" when it is indeed "si-yahhzh." 11 Jun 2024On The Brink Of Glossier They/Them00:42:35

A hangtime discussing the BBC documentary about child labor in the Egyptian jasmine supply chain, scented lip balms are everywhere, normalizing not having takes on everything (in beauty coverage ), Binaurale's kooky fragrances, a poppers-themed (?) Boy  Smells candle, how a brand's signature scent is its strongest leverage, and how the fragrance You is the dangling carrot in the Glossier buyout rumors.

29 Sep 2020Bath & Body Works All Grown Up00:52:09

It's our episode with the brand that your hosts grew up with, formed our nascent scent-ualities around, and forever have a soft spot in our gummy little hearts for... Bath & Body Works. It was the mall oasis where for less than $20 you could form your identity within clouds of Warm Vanilla Sugar, Sun-Ripened Raspberry, and Juniper Breeze.

Chrissy Montera, Associate VP of Marketing at Bath & Body Works joins us on the pod to talk about her impressive tenure at the brand, building the legacies of scents that we've come to associate with our adolescence, and how Bath & Body Works endures to this day as the brand that grew up with you.

20 Sep 2022Do you like the smell of LUXURY?01:08:09

We thought we had heard the last of what luxury fragrance could be, and then came Aeir. Founded by disciples of the tech, luxury, and designer goods worlds, we have Enrico Pietra and Rodrigo Caula on to talk how about fragrance can be a vehicle to express how luxury is so much more than cost and expense. With the innovation of extractionless molecular scent-making, custom packaging made from thoughtful materials, and designed to highlight how chic those materials can be, Aeir's first offering is four scents that smell as lux as they look.

24 Nov 2020Falling BACK Into The GAP Scents00:49:05
This episode features the ultimate anti-aging ingredient: a concentrated dose of Nostalgia. Today we’re taking a trip back to middle school (sorry) with the six GAP Scent fragrances. Yes, THOSE fragrances. We deep dive into six of the originals, pulling apart what makes them so unique, so iconic, and why they’re seared into our collective consciousness. And best of all, we’ll clue you in on how you can get your hands on them (because they never really left). 08 Oct 2024What Does Attachment Theory Smell Like?01:20:33

Eleasium's mystically oceanic and intuition-formed debut scent is a single perfume oil inspired by dark, cold water, pomegranates, mermaids, seashells, pearls, and...attachment theory. We have Courtney Brunson, founder of Eleasium (and our former colleague from xoJane days) on this episode to chat about her career in brand copy and product development, moving to Paris, and making her first fragrance, Attachment Oil.

25 May 2021The Scent Of Toxic Masculinity01:05:13

There are certain fragrances that carry connotations of the types of personalities who wear them loud and proud. And for those unfortunate few fragrances who did nothing wrong other than hang around the wrong crowd of certain men about town... they have come to be the  aromatic warning waft for the fuccboi™. For reasons unknown to all but the marketing teams behind their mass success, these certain fragrances are implicitly known by anyone with a beating heart as the scent of fuccbois. Your hosts discuss what these scents all have in common, how egregiously they have proliferated toxic masculinity, and our own traumatic experiences with these top offenders.

22 Sep 2020D.S. & Durga Sprays The Hits00:51:04
We've got the D.S. in D.S. & Durga and the brand's perfumer, David Seth Moltz, to Zoom with us about how he and his partner Kavi Moltz went from a musician/waiter and architect (respectively) to create one of the coolest and most unique modern American perfume brands around. David breaks down our favorite scents from the line, scrambles our little bunny brains with some olfactory knowledge, and explains how starting their fragrance brand isn't all that dissimilar from starting a band. 08 Jun 2021Talking SPF: Summer Perfumes & Fragrances (& Sunscreen)00:49:26

Everyone knows that when you start smelling that sweetly tropical scent of sunscreen on everyone's skin, summer is officially here. But what is that particular scent that we all seem to just know? We do a not-that-deep dive into our favorite sunscreen brands' telltale fragrances and get into what our favorite classic summer fragrances are for getting into all the kinds of trouble that only this hellishly horny season can enable.

25 Jan 2022The Most Intimidating Fragrance Shop In New York01:28:46

Deep in the Lower East Side, you will find New York City's own Temple Of Beauty, AKA Aedes Perfumery. The artisanal fragrance boutique has carried some of Europe's most elite brands under one roof since 1995. We talk to co-founder Robert Gerstner, who along with his co-founder Karl Bradl, opened one of New York City's most unique fragrance boutiques, which brings some of Europe's best artisanal scents to the states. Gerstner shares some fragrance-shopping insight, like why the coffee bean smell-reset thing is bullshit, what you should actually smell to neutralize your nose when testing lots of fragrances, and why you should get over fragrance shopping intimidation. Also, Naomi Campbell's eyedrops of choice.

Also pertinent: Aedes De Venustas, the shop's house line of fragrances, offers some of the most exquisite scents this side of the Atlantic — a  bit of European sophistication and flair handmade in New York with the energetic attitude that this city imbues unto all those who dare make a name for themselves here.

12 Jan 2021The Places We Have Come to Smell The Most00:39:40
We know it's 2021 or whatever, but we're starting off the year by dusting off this vintage gem from early days that we just...never published for some reason. Never too late to right a wrong! Recorded in early September 2020, this episode is all about the way scents have become pins in the maps of our lives, harkening back to places, environments, and contexts that employ the likes of SpaghettiOs, automobile paint, garbage water, hot dog carts, and much more as odor anchors in our travels. Liam Findlay of Aroma Prime talks about how scents are used in immersive and entertainment applications like theme parks, amusement attractions, and museums to enhance the experience and shift the vibes – anything from stoking anticipation before a roller coaster to recreating a lifelike olfactory environment of a Viking hut.  He's also just released a children's book with a scent-focused narrative, called The Doomtown Dummies.

07 Jun 2022The Fragrance Born From REVENGE01:09:27

The mysterious, Canadian fragrance brand Persons Of Interest has a habit of popping up in all kinds of good-smell convos by those in the know. Their non-descript bottles bear compelling titles like Sex & Cigarettes, Buried Past, and Two Wolves that speak for themselves. We spoke with the brand founder Dino Caracciolo all about his initial successful men's grooming and skincare line, how a retail rejection prompted a revenge fragrance brand, and the takeoff success of that brand without  the traditional pushy marketing that so many fragrance brands must rely on for exposure.

22 Jun 2021The Many Layers of Kayali01:09:27

If you've watched any beauty YouTube (or Instagram) in the past decade you're likely well aware of Huda Beauty. But the brand's co-founder Mona Kattan also has an extremely high-profile (perhaps the highest) side hustle with KAYALI, a very fancy fragrance brand. Perhaps you've heard about it from Tynan absolutely losing it over Sweet Diamond Pink Pepper in previous episodes, or more likely from Mona herself because she is much more influential than we, and also she runs the brand, obviously.

Well, lucky for us, Mona has a new scent that's perfect for now (summer) and also forever! Utopia Vanilla Coco 21 (which Sable will undoubtedly refer to as UVC21), is Kayali's seventh fragrance and the antidote to a year+ long lockdown. She talks about bringing the scent to life and how Kayali got its start from her passion for scent and perfume, the immersive culture of fragrance in Dubai, and what it's like running a few of the world's  most beloved beauty brands.

We all remember navigating the mall through the huge beauty floors (because you always had to enter the mall through a department store for some reason) where your friendly fragrance sales associates would be demo-ing the latest,  pungiest (you know what I mean), designer-iest fragrances. Well, we have always wondered what it's like to have one of the most glamorous jobs at the mall: perfume girl. So we decided to talk to one former fragrance demo (and current illustrator and artist extraordinaire), Lauren Tamaki, who has over 10 years of behind-the-counter experience shilling scents to the world (well the part of the world that visited Canadian department stores). Selling fragrance is not unlike speed dating — you're getting to know someone's desires and aspirations and what makes them cringe or go weak in the knees — all in just one sense. It is also not unlike a well-heeled territorial game of survival of the spritziest, as Ms. Tamaki tells us from her time on the sales floor.

Check out Lauren Tamaki's  work: http://laurentamaki.com/

24 May 2022The Art Gallery You Can Sniff01:09:15

If you've ever wondered why scent isn't incorporated into other experiential endeavors like cinema, museums, reenactments, or  performance itself, you are not alone. However, Andreas Keller, owner and curator of Olfactory Art Keller  decided to make it real, with a downtown gallery in NYC dedicated to the art of smell. He tells us all about it in this episode, as well as how and why everyone smells things differently (something he learned from fruit flies), the trouble with smells, the lack of critical vocabulary around smells, NFTs: are they good or evil for art smells?, and how people interact with things differently once smells are involved.

10 Sep 2024Bringing Ceremony Back To Scent [feat Richard Christiansen of Flamingo Estate]01:07:47

Before the tomato-ssance, there was Flamingo Estate. Richard Christiansen's humble Los Angeles farm is where the vegetal scent trend gained the luxury home reputation. His home, place of work, and brand has quickly made a name for itself in all things farm-to-credenza, agriculture awareness, farmer-friendly, and salt (and herb, and flower, and vine) of the earth. Christiansen chats to us about the COVID-driven collapse of his creative agency that led to his rebirth as a farmer, the importance of ritual and ceremony, and how he personally texts and calls Flamingo Estate's top customers every week (if that's you, please text him back, it's not a bot, we swear!).

14 Feb 2021The Scent of LOVE00:48:06

It's the episode that we (mostly Tynan) have all been waiting for. We're doing Valentine's Day with an early surprise episode discussing scents of former lovers and former lives, a semi-accurate and entirely too broad discussion of aphrodisiacs, and...edibles? Grab a box of conversation hearts, don't you dare text your ex, and join us in celebrating the most wonderful time of the year.

09 Jul 2024"Beauty is crazy" AKA The Die Hot With A Vengeance special interview episode01:06:02

Here's a one-off special, a minor departure, a host-turned-guest episode where Tynan interviews Sable about her debut essay collection Die Hot With A Vengeance. We cover the process of the book deal, the writing of the book, the convoluted nature of our current beauty culture and the precarious positions we find ourselves in for its pursuit, and (almost) everything you'd want to know about the book of the summer — because it's officially out today!

You can also find the perfume made for the book of the same name here, which we covered in a previous episode

12 Dec 2023Perfume Is About To Get Weirder In 2024 🔮🗓️01:02:39

Peanut perfume, nuclear florals, textile accords, spiritual smells — these are a few directions perfume may be going in 2024 and beyond. Some of our predictions for this year have been spot-on while others are still cooking, and that is enough encouragement to keep us following our noses to give you another scent trend forecast for the next year to come.

01 Mar 2022You Can't Fuck A Fragrance01:08:50

Sex sells, but you can't fuck a fragrance. You can, however, fuck a celebrity (if you're lucky or maybe try really hard), and combining the two has been the standard for how to sell a fragrance since forever probably. The spokespeople are however getting kookier and by way of more interesting choices... hotter? Now that it appears that clout and a certain It-ness of cultural relevancy garner more intrigue and more dollars, the people in our fragrance ads are perhaps less familiar but wholly more inclusive and interesting. Anyway, all that and such, but we shall be using this flimsy structure of a topic to go on about hot people in fragrance ads.

So we asked Steve Mormoris, CEO of Scent Beauty and former CMO at Coty Beauty, how and why famous folks like Cher, Dolly Parton, and Beyoncé create fragrances—and how Lady Gaga's Fame perfume was originally meant to smell like sperm and blood (and whose sperm it was based on).

23 May 2023If You're Gonna Do One Thing This Summer, It's Smell Me01:04:00

We are exploring "beast mode" fragrances as a concept, as a way of wearing scent, and as a trigger. It could very well be the antithesis of summer fragrances, just happening to have a resurgence in relevance as summer approaches. While we don't believe in seasonal scents, summer tends to have a hold on fragrance wearers' perceptions of the existence of summer scents as a concept. With respect to that, we discuss our favorite scents that go as long as the days are this time of year.

10 Aug 2021Fenty Fumes, Gasoline Meatballs, & Toxic Girlfriend Tips00:59:54

There have been some events happening in the world that can be smelled and then thought about: The Fenty ParFUM: What it smells like. What it's made of. What's the deal with that logo. Also, Rihanna's government name is Robyn?? (It is.)  Also, all these scented stunt products from IKEA and Ford. Plus, some very fascinating and confusing scientific discoveries in a bug's nose about how olfactory receptors work -- that while being very exciting, we are not entirely sure what it means? But we're trying. And that's what matters. Sort of.

19 Jan 2021Bottling Romance with Atelier Cologne01:02:04
Atelier Cologne is not only a prolific collection of fragrances but also an olfactive retelling of the love story between the two founders, Sylvie Ganter and Christophe Cervasel. Can you stand it? Brand Ambassador and Atelier Cologne's first employee Ross Barry joins the pod to take us through the history of the brand from how it started, how they stay true to their nature-derived and environmentally sustainable practices, and how the brand keeps current in the increasingly competitive beauty and fragrance landscape. He also airs out the brand’s dirty laundry which of course, we love, and you will too. [Fragrances mentioned: The Nue Co. 26 Jan 2021Whiff-Busting With Neurologist & Author Rachel Herz01:15:02

Would you rather lose your cell phone or your sense of smell? Apparently, a lot of chuckleheads would be OK with losing their sense of smell. BUT! Did you know just how integrated your sense of smell is to your mental and physical well-being, your ability to sniff out an ideal mate, and experiencing a full spectrum of emotions (and flavors!) in 4kHD? Tim Apple could never.

Neurologist and smell-specialist Rachel Herz kindly blows our smooth little minds with heaps of information about just how underrated and underestimated the sense of smell is — like how pheromones are a myth, how you can detect various diseases and illness through body odor, how hanging out with babies and other pregnant women can make you more fertile, and how Big Brother may very well soon be using odor profiles to track us. Listen to this episode and never take your sense of smell for granted again! And then immediately go read Rachel Herz's books: The Scent of Desire, Why We Eat What We Eat, and That's Disgusting.

06 Oct 2020The Pumpkin Spice Episode00:43:59
This episode has everything: Satanism, cinnamon-flavored colonialism, misogynistic food groups, and the Hamburglar. We take it upon ourselves to do a two-person roundtable of all things pumpkin spice and its reign over autumn in the North American hemisphere. In this episode, we give you a semi-accurate history of pumpkin spice lore, we talk about what we love about the ubiquitous fall scent, and then shit-talk everything about it that we don't, while calling out all the products that took it upon themselves to pumpkin spice themselves for the season. 15 Sep 2020Eau De Nostalgia00:44:03
Many-something years ago in a megamall complex far, far away... is where some of the most poignant scents of our formative years were found, sprayed, and burrowing into the recesses of our brains to forever timestamp those specific scents for probably ever. We're talking about our most nostalgic scents, name-checking the body splashes we built our identities around, and Tynan goes on a tangential rant about his distaste for deodorant (with some legit deodorant reccs, so it's not without its merit). 12 Oct 2021We've Had Enough Of This Scent-less Violence01:08:42

Added fragrance in beauty products gets a bad rep these days. But given the likelihood that most products "don't work" anyway, may we at least reap some sensorial joy out of greasing up our slowly deteriorating mortal vessels with our little creams and potions, please? If you can slather it, we've smelled it, and this episode contains our favorite non-fragrance fragranced products.

What else:

  • Tynan doesn't know how to do laundry
  • Sable is the worst rock star
  • I'm a little lad who loves Botox and cream
  • The Ariana Grande Cloud Atlas Ultimate
  • Sable was not a teenage klepto ;)
  • Is there such a thing as a round fetish?
  • No, I'm seriously asking
  • The surprise best lip product for male-identifying makeup wearers

14 Jun 2022Overheard At The Fragrance Duty-Free01:04:43

It's vacation season or whatever, which got us thinking about travel scents and the smells of some vacations we've had — you know, all those unfamiliar and exciting smells far from home. Tynan has a designated vacation scent, and Sable  likes finding new smells when elsewhere. Other tangents include but are not limited to: Why Pride month and all these dedicated months are a little cringe, "Clean girl" beauty, that D.S. & Durga NFP, country music, and something something conspiracy. So yeah, it's one of those episodes.

05 Jul 2022Ice Cream Doesn't Have A Scent... Until Now00:59:14

Did you know that ice cream does not have a scent? Neither did we. Well someone decided to do something about it, I guess, and here we are. Salt & Straw, premium ice creamery hailing from Portland, OR has teamed up with premium fragrance makers Imaginary Authors (also from Portland) to make edible fragrances you can spray on your ice cream to enhance the experience of your pint plundering. We tried to mute as much of the mouth sounds as possible in this experiential episode but we had to give you a live taste-smell sesh for the occasion.

12 Jul 2022Absolutely VABulous01:08:33

Before there was Secretions Magnifique, there were magnificent secretions — that aromatic cocktail made by one's own body-ody-ody and it has been dubbed "vabbing" (a portmanteau of vagina and dabbing).  Wearing one's own snail trail as a perfume to pull goes in and out of the zeitgeist, and thanks to TikTok it has been yanked back into it once more. Your hosts graciously, articulately, and elegantly explain the ins and outs of vabbing and its misleading philosophies with whatever science has found so far for us — including debunking human sex pheromones, destigmatizing vaginal odors, and other sensical items.

17 Nov 2020The COMMODITY Comeback01:06:32

Commodity was one of the first fragrance brands to launch on the Internet, pioneering the fragrance DTC model. And then, a few years after its launch, it vanished. Quietly, suddenly, tragically. And now... IT'S BACK. The re-founder and CEO Vicken Arslanian joins us to talk about rebooting the beloved brand, breathing new life into it without changing its DNA, and even Commodity 2.0's debut scent.

29 Mar 2022Who's Singing About Perfume?00:52:58

One could argue that music and fragrance are parallel art forms, especially when you realize that so much fragrance language borrows from music (notes, accords, compositions). And sometimes they become one when people sing about perfume, name-dropping certain fragrances or simply smelling in song. In this episode, we discuss the songs of smells that we are aware of and a whole lot of ones we are not.

17 May 2022Gearing Up For A Scentboi Summer01:05:41

It's been a minute (three weeks) but due to unforsmelled circumstances, we took a little-medium break. But now we're back on the very same bullshit that we are known and loved for: talking about smells we like. In this very casual catch-up chat, Tynan and Sable discuss new scents they like, new scents they would like to smell, and the beginnings of what is shaping up to be a Scentboi Summer™ (you heard it here first). That's pretty much it. This one bounces around quite a bit, which may cause listeners with pivoting sensitivies  some minor anguish. But for everyone else,  it's pretty much the same oversharing and oversmelling you've come to expect.

23 Nov 2021Jackie Aina Is A FORVR Mood01:27:43

Whoever said never meet your idols never told Tynan, who has manifested such a meeting with none other than mega influencer and scented candle queen, Jackie Aina. Excuse the jittery energy, as we get into it with our girl, who's had a prolific career, from dropping out of college, joining the army, dominating YouTube, interviewing the president of the United States (!!!) and of course, launching cheeky candle brand, FORVR MOOD.

15 Sep 2020What Do We Smell Like? So Glad We Asked.00:40:14
Welcome to Smell Ya Later's inaugural episode. Your hosts, Tynan and Sable talk about their fragrant backgrounds, why writing about and describing fragrance is so complicated, why they started this smelly podcast, their current TOP THREE SCENTS, and some other stuff, too. It's the first episode, had to get all this housekeeping out of the way first, you know? 10 Nov 2020Malin + Goetz Is For Lovers00:46:33
Dark Rum. Cannabis. Peppermint. No, not the remnants of a hotel room Hunter S. Thompson just checked out of — these are some of the Hall of Fame scents slung by the chic and minimalist lifestyle brand Malin + Goetz. Peek into any shower in a 1BR in Chelsea and chances are you've seen a bottle of Malin + Goetz body products. Chances are you and your S.O. have fought over and then shared said body products, replenishing in equal measure, to keep the bottle count low and the suds plentiful. We talk to the eponymous founders about how and why they created a simple, elegant, and functional solution to bathroom clutter while elevating the entire concept of putting stuff on your body at all with the most invigorating and memorable scents. 27 Aug 2024The Perfume You Can Smell Only When It's In Season [feat. April Gargiulo of Vintner's Daughter]01:04:26

Imagine only being able to make a perfume when the raw materials are in peak season. That's how April Gargiulo developed Understory, the singular perfume oil from her brand Vintner's Daughter. A year after its original launch, it's back again—round 2—with some slightly evolved aromatic tweaks. This is how a winemaker creates a perfume oil.

02 Mar 2021Haley Kiyoko's First Fragrance Hue Is That Hot Girl Scent™ & Then Some01:02:41

We finally did it. Our  obsession with celebrity fragrance brings us to interview queer pop icon Haley Kiyoko about her first fragrance Hue. Two years in the making, it's being released into the world like... tomorrow, but not after a slew of ideations on how to create the kind of scent that feels like a "virtual hug." Before you ask, it's made for everyone by which we mean, it's made for anyone needing an aura of safety and security where one can feel their most authentic. So yeah, that's pretty much everyone, right? Haley talks about what it's like being a queer pop artist in a mainstream space, her favorite scent memories, and why music and scent are such powerful means of expression.
