20 Sep 2021#138 Caleb Swanepoel - Shark attack survivor, athlete and motivational speaker00:37:02

Today we spoke with Caleb Swanepoel - Shark attack survivor, athlete and motivational speaker.
For this episode, we would like to raise awareness for www.WeThe15.org - sport’s biggest ever human rights movement to end discrimination. The aim is to transform the lives of the world’s 1.2 billion persons with disabilities, who represent 15% of the global population.

Caleb is a father, an inspiration and a resilient human being, living in Cape Town, South Africa. In June 2015 his right leg was amputated above the knee after he was attacked by a great white shark while bodysurfing in Buffalo Bay, South Africa. Caleb is keen to test himself on the Shakespeare circuit in London – but there are other opportunities. Since the shark attack, he’s gone back into the water many times, excelling at elite levels in surfing and swimming; he won his division in the International Surfing Association Adaptive Surfing Championships.

Today we talk about what his son has taught him, what did it change internally being a dad...seeing something that's a part of you, connected to you, and fresh perspectives. We speak about his mom running a school, and her driving force and love for teaching...no doubt a huge influence on the performing arts and drama studies now a part of Calebs' life.

We unpack living in the moment, be that swimming and training...trauma, fear of failure, connection and overcoming. Caleb talks to us about our capability as humans, what he does when angered and frustrated, and an attitude focusing on that there's not such a thing as bad weather, just bad gear - control what you can control!

The WeThe15 movement is discussed, as the shark attack (which he tells the story!) changed how he sees disability, a lived experience of differently-abled - 1.2 billion have some type of challenge - reflect on inclusion and equity!

What a chat!

13 Jun 2022#176 Professor Brendan Kelly - Professor of Psychiatry and Consultant Psychiatrist at Tallaght University Hospital00:38:54

Today we spoke with Professor Brendan Kelly - Professor of Psychiatry at Trinity College Dublin and Consultant Psychiatrist at Tallaght University Hospital

Dr Brendan Kelly is a medical doctor who has specialised in psychiatry. His research interests include the epidemiology of psychosis, mental health services, the history of psychiatry, and human rights in mental health. He is most interested in the extent to which persons with mental illness participate in civic and social life, and the barriers they and their families face in exercising their rights, including economic and social rights. Brendan contributes frequently to print and broadcast media and writes regularly for the medical press. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry and has a new book called 'In Search of Madness: A Psychiatrist's Travels Through the History of Mental Illness', following the success of 'The Science of Happiness: The Six Principles of a Happy Life and the Seven Strategies for Achieving It'; reminds us of our chat with Dr Tim Sharp, #132.

Brendan compared psychology and psychiatry for us, and where they compliment each other in practice. We asked why Brendan took this career path...what it is about this profession that stimulates him...and various types of babble! He discussed how psychiatry has evolved globally and in Ireland from the Shutter Island perception of lobotomies to new ways of treating people...and how we are still learning about mental health, neuroscience and mental illness all the time. There are so many questions to be answered!

We hope this medium allows you to take the lessons from the very best and apply them in your life.

Our key takeaways from this episode are:

2 – We can create focus and cohesion more easily on stable teams, but what about when things are uncertain and changing? We need to create a culture that promotes teaming to navigate the ever-changing world and unpredicted challenges;

3 – Look back to understand where you’re going. Note all the good in your buildup…it can help reveal your progress, to drive you on to new heights

Thanks for listening and as always please rate, review, and share.

Ode tells us about his start in wrestling, his introduction to mixed martial arts (MMA) and his style in the fight game, that of "free flow".

Fight analysts call Ode Osbourne the "Picasso of MMA", and say his style resembles that of the legendary Brazilian UFC fighter, Anderson "The Spider" Silva. What made this episode special was when Ode shared his teachings and leadership-building strategies that he employs with the young students he works with in school through elements of MMA- structure, motivation and discipline.

There was so much to take away from this episode from key themes such as mindset, resilience and grit.

The key theme embedded throughout this episode is of the importance of hard graft but also with that the enjoyment of your chosen craft, if you’re lucky to be there.

The plan for this episode was to release it during the Rugby World Cup in Japan but we decided to keep it till after the completion to see how accurate our predictions were. Listen out for that, and the future of the sport according to Kevin.

On this episode you will hear from

- Steve Gera (03:34): Innovation specialist, former NFL coach, CEO Gains Group, Leaders in Sport consultant and former US Marine

- Sonia O'Sullivan (06:25): Olympian in track and field, lover of coffee, and inspiration to all Irish people

We hope this medium allows you to take the lessons from the very best and apply them in your life.

Our key takeaways from this episode are:

1 – High performance is not reserved for those in elite sport or business. It is in our day-to-day – it’s relative to each one of us, no matter where we are. As Vince Lombardi says ‘the quality of a person’s life is in direct proportion to their commitment to excellence, regardless of their chosen field of endeavour”.

2 – Setting a direction is essential. Goals help us create a roadmap for where we want to go.

3 – We cannot influence the future without being present today...and impacting this moment!

As always please rate, review, share and thanks for listening to our podcast.
