🎙️ Sirens, Slammers, and Service – The First Episode with Nikki Cloutier

Welcome to the very first episode of Sirens, Slammers, and Service! Kicking off this journey is none other than your host, Nikki Cloutier, sharing her raw and unfiltered story as a former Alberta correctional officer.

From stepping into a male-dominated world as a young female officer to navigating the intense demands of a tactical team, Nikki reflects on the highs, the struggles, and the defining moments of her nearly two-decade career. But the story doesn’t end there—she made the bold move to leave corrections and launch Blue Line Fitness Testing, a business dedicated to preparing first responders for the mental and physical demands of the job.

💡 What were her biggest challenges in corrections? What pushed her to walk away? And how is she now shaping the future for law enforcement hopefuls?

🔥 Join us for this debut episode as we dive into resilience, reinvention, and what it truly takes to serve on the front lines. 🎧

23 Dec 2022Sirens, Slammers and Service- Season 2, Episode 1 - Laurie White00:43:40

Send us a text

We are kicking off SEASON 2 with a BANG!!! The guests I have lined up are so freaking amazing! In episode 1, we interview Laurie White, a 24 year veteran of the RCMP.

In 1998, while stationed in Kitimat, British Columbia with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Laurie was shot in the right leg by an alleged sex offender wielding a sawed-off .303 rifle.  Damage was so severe that her leg had to be amputated five inches below her knee.  After only ten months of rehabilitation, Laurie passed the physical test standard for the RCMP and made an unprecedented return to full, unrestricted general policing duties with a prosthetic leg.
When Laurie retired from the RCMP in 2020, she achieved a 22+ year goal of publishing her memoir (“10-33, An Officer Down Steps Back Up”).

In addition to being a best-selling author, Laurie has been a sought-after speaker since 1999.  During this pod cast, Laurie candidly shares her experiences as a first responder navigating mental health issues and life with a permanent physical disability.  While Laurie’s journey began as one of trauma, loss, and grief, it evolved into one of hope, resilience, and post-traumatic growth.

Okay which details the anguish and rage he experienced in the darkest depths of despair, and the process and triumph of fighting his way out. This is a book about how an insecure, overcompensating, professional tough guy stopped hating the world—and stopped hating himself in the process.

During our episode, Sheridan shares some hard truths, some tough love and some funny stories about his time in uniform and what he is up to now. This episode will make you laugh, cry and think long and hard about your mental health!

10 Feb 2023Sirens, Slammers and Service- Season 2, Episode 8 - Erin Nugent - Former Australian Police Officer and Master Certified Life Coach00:56:07

Send us a text

This week I am joined by a real life Aussie who is now living in the USA!! Erin Nugent was employed with Victoria Police (AUS) for 9 years, obtained her Detective position and was assigned to the Armed Crime Squad, where they dealt with armed robberies over $10k, kidnappings, aggravated burglaries and non-fatal shootings.

Erin met her husband who is a fire fighter, (🤩🤩 SPOILER ALERT ... Iron Maiden had something to do with it!!) and moved to Boston, beginning to volunteer as a Crisis Counsellor with a Suicide Prevention and Crisis Counselling organization called Samaritans. As a family survivor of suicide, Erin was drawn to this kind of work, and attended plenty of suicides and attempts as a police officer (or as Aussies like to call it - as a COPPER).

After having her 2 sons, Erin began her certification to be a Master Life Coach and brings a unique level of understanding, having been a first responder and also being married to one. Erin knows what it's like to be in both positions and the complexities and challenges that can come along with that AND how important mental health and wellness is for people who are continually exposed to trauma and critical incidents, often over many years.

Erin aims to bridge the gap between peer support and clinical services, trying to cut through the resistance to any kind of "help" in our first responder community, made difficult because of the stigma attached and the overall culture.

Check this episode out for a unique perspective on international first responder careers and some great discussion on mental health wellness for first responders.

Sirens, Slammers and Service is kicking off SEASON 3 with an absolute legend!!  Shirley Benson became the first woman EVER to work as a firefighter in Edmonton and throughout her over 30 year career, she moved up through the ranks to become a district chief.  A first for so many milestones as a female,  being a trailblazer is nothing new for this awarded Global Woman of Vision!!

“I’m a firefighter who is female. First and foremost, I was a city of Edmonton firefighter, before all else that’s who I am at the core even. And then just secondary to that it just happens that I’m a woman as well. So, that’s how I look at it.”

30 Aug 2023Sirens, Slammers and Service- Season 3, Episode 12 - Loss of Identity when you Leave a First Responder Career00:42:13

Send us a text

In this candid season finale episode, Sirens, Slammers and Service host Nikki,  who left her correctional officer career behind four years ago, explores the loss of identity many first responders grapple with when they hang up their uniforms.

Having spent almost two decades behind the bars of one of the toughest correctional facilities in the country, she knows all too well the highs and lows that come with the job. But what happens when the job you've dedicated your life to, a job that has defined your identity for so long, is suddenly left in the past?

During the conversation, we explore the emotional toll of leaving a career that becomes an integral part of one's identity, the difficulties of transitioning to civilian life, and the stigma that can surround mental health within the first responder community.

Join us in this thought-provoking episode of Sirens, Slammers and Service, as we shed light on the seldom-discussed struggles faced by retired first responders or those who have chosen to leave their careers, and celebrate the resilience it takes to rebuild a sense of self after a career that once defined almost every facet of their lives. If you or someone you know is a first responder facing similar challenges, this episode offers insight and hope for a future beyond the uniform.
