12 Oct 2021 | 269 - Kimberley's Story (Part 5) | 01:25:06
This week on the show, single mum Kimberley shares Part 5 of her story. Please note that these contain sensitive topics on domestic abuse and violence. It is recommended you listen to Parts 1 - 4 prior to listening to Part 5, but here's a short recap of the past episodes. In Ep 263 - Part 1, Kimberley talked about growing up in a single mum household and the relationship she had with her own father, the night she met her husband, and how (what she thought was going to be) a one night stand turned into a very toxic and abusive relationship. She shared the story of the early days of their relationship, up until the birth of her daughter, and the red flags and abusive tendencies that started appearing. In Ep 264 - Part 2, Kimberley's story continued. She talked about how the abusive tendencies started escalating and she shared her experience of what she would later find out was known as the cycle of domestic violence. She also talked about how she gained the courage to leave him, though it was the first of many attempts she made to leave the relationship, and how six months later he wormed his way back in. In Ep 267 - Part 3, Kimberley shares the further violent and abusive outbursts of her ex, and the safety measures she started taking to protect herself (and how she perceived this as being normal), the financial abuse that had started getting worse, the isolation he inflicted on her and separating her from her friends and sister (her biggest support), his gambling and consequent debt that kept increasing, and his paranoia that kept getting worse. She also shares what happened when he moved out and back in again a couple of times. In Ep 268 - Part 4, Kimberley started sharing what happened in the final six months of them living together, which is what she allowed because she wanted to protect her kids. She shared all the crazy things he did and beliefs he held and how she always felt like she was walking on eggshells around her ex. And then how one day, he started telling her how easy it would be to kill her - that all he had to do was come over and strangle her. And then he taunted her – repeatedly walked towards her and then away. And then the next day - raping her. In this episode, Kimberley explains how she felt completely stuck with nowhere to go after calling the Police for advice and being told she could take an AVO out that would protect her, but not her children. She talks more about his violent outbursts - throwing raw eggs all over the walls of the kitchen and dining room, hitting their daughter with their phone, and spitting on his son's bedroom door - and his sexist attitudes - expecting Kimberley to clean up after him, and their daughter to clean up after her brother. She also tells us about the suicide threats he would make to their children. Kimberley also shares the details of the night the nightmare she was living finally came to an end... Finally, we discuss:

16 Aug 2022 | 311 - Emotions | 00:15:57
Today I talk with you about emotions. How we live and interact with others is influenced by our emotions. It could even be said that we are ruled by our emotions. We make decisions based on whether we are happy, angry, or sad. It’s important to understand how your emotions are expressed and the impact they have on your actions because they can help us navigate life with ease. In this episode, I talk about the eight basic emotions that we are born with, and how they can stimulate a response in our body that influence our actions, behaviour, and decision-making. I also talk about blending emotions to produce a new emotion. I want you to know that it’s okay to experience any type of emotion, even those that can be difficult to cope with like anger or fear. Understanding your emotions helps us learn how to manage them, and it helps build healthy, satisfying relationships. Listen to the episode to know more! 18 Apr 2023 | 346 - Jade's Story Part 2 | 00:43:46
This week on the show, my special guest Jade shares Part 2 of her story. **Please note this episode and topic may act as a trigger for some people, and this episode is unsuitable to listen to within earshot of children.** Jade is a single mum who has been through a lot. She was in a relationship where her partner gaslit her, was unfaithful, and was emotionally abusive. For a long time, Jade struggled with the effects of her partner's behaviour. She questioned her own sanity and felt like she was losing her grip on reality. Today, she is a thriving woman who is now paying it forward. She is using her own experiences to help others who may be going through similar challenges, helping other women to recognise what is holding them back and reclaiming personal power. Her story is a powerful reminder not to ignore the subtle signs of gaslighting and emotional abuse, and that no one deserves to be in an abusive relationship. In this episode Jade and I talked about:

26 May 2022 | 299 – Look for the sparkles | 00:27:30
In this week’s episode, I discuss finding joy in your everyday life. I often get messages from other single mums out there who tell me how lucky I am that I found my happiness and that I have support from my loved ones in my single mum journey. What many people don’t understand is the importance of having the right mindset. Going through separation or divorce can really bog you down; it is a difficult time. But know that you have a choice. Your ex is not in control of what you do with your life now. Your ex is not determining your current state of mind. You are in a position to keep your chin up, find your sparkle and ride the waves as you work on improving your circumstances, or be engulfed with negative thoughts and energy. No matter what your situation. Be kind to yourself. In this episode, along with talking about the importance of having the right mindset, I also discuss the importance of forgiving yourself and practising gratitude. Finally, I share a couple of strategies that will help you develop the positive mindset that will make a big difference in your single mum journey. I hope that this episode gave you a new perspective and an understanding that what you focus on becomes your reality. Whatever your circumstances, make a conscious daily decision to choose joy. 23 Apr 2024 | 399 - Post separation abuse | 00:35:04
In this week's episode, we're diving into the often overlooked topic of post-separation abuse. While it's not widely discussed, it's unfortunately experienced by many. We start by exploring the correlation between high-conflict personalities and abuse, shedding light on this important connection. I also share eight common ways that post-separation abuse can manifest itself, as well as four steps to prepare for safety and six other methods to help you manage the situation. Post-separation abuse, often emotional and psychological in nature, can leave victims feeling confused, anxious, and unable to trust themselves. Research indicates that emotional abuse can be more psychologically damaging than physical abuse. If you're finding yourself in fight, flight, or freeze mode, you're not alone. 03 Sep 2019 | 160 - My husband had schizophrenia; Anna's story | 00:56:42
In 2016 Anna (not her real name) met the man who would be her future husband. It was amazing from the very start. Within a few months, she knew he was the man that she wanted to get married to, have children with, and spend the rest of her life with. She thought she had met the man of her dreams. Soon after, Anna unexpectedly fell pregnant. They got married and everything was great until about six months into the pregnancy when things started to change. For example, her husband wouldn't allow her to watch TV and he suddenly started reading the bible (when he had never been that religious beforehand). At 35 weeks pregnant, Anna found out about her husband's mental illness after a passing question from her mother in law. She asked Anna if her son had been taking his medication. When Anna returned home, she questioned him about the medication and he told her if she didn’t stop asking he would stab her pregnant stomach. Anna then found the medication and did some research. She discovered her husband had schizophrenia. Anna refers to the day her son was born as the day she lost her husband. He didn’t hold their son, didn’t bathe him, and didn’t connect with him at all. In the months that followed Anna and her husband broke up several times. She left him for good when their son was 7 months old. In this episode, Anna shares her story. We also discuss...
Anna has been through a lot over the last three years, but what is most remarkable is her positive attitude. A must listen! 09 Jul 2019 | 152 - Amy's single mum story, and the relationship with her husband that was a lie | 00:53:24
Amy was with her husband (and father of her two children) for 12 years when he suddenly, and without any warning whatsoever, told her that their marriage was over. He had fallen in love with someone else. This is part 1 of a two-part series in which Amy shares her story. In it, she talks about the life she had with her husband prior to the separation and the trusting relationship she thought they had... She tells me about how they dealt with a terminal cancer diagnosis in the family, renovating the family home and moving in with her inlaws, and the beauty of hindsight. We discuss her grief, trauma, panic attacks, and how she had a breakdown and ended up in a psych ward. After 12 years with her partner, it turned out her entire relationship had been a lie. Her husband was not the man she thought he was. Stay tuned for next week's episode where this story is continued... Sign up to the next FREE 30 Day Get Your Sparkle Back Challenge HERE. 16 Jul 2019 | 153 - Amy's single mum story, and the relationship with her husband that was a lie (Part 2) | 00:57:41
In this episode, Amy shares Part 2 of her story... After a brief stint "birdnesting", Amy and her husband sold their houses and started living separately. Slowly slowly Amy started getting her life back together. She had a relatively good co-parenting relationship with her ex, and she had started dating. Then, her husband said he wanted to work things out. After deciding she couldn't live with the what-ifs, Amy decided to give it another go with her husband. Not long after that, he had moved in. A few months later, out of the blue, Amy received a message from her husband's past mistress/girlfriend on Instagram who told her to pass on to her husband to stop harassing her and to ask him about all the women. Such a blow. What she then discovered ended the relationship she had with him, and the trust in him, for good. In this episode, Amy so openly and vulnerably shares what happened. She talks about the shame she felt about her husband having affairs and not knowing, questioning her whole relationship with him and the lie, trust issues, coming to the realisation that the affairs were not her fault, and meeting her new partner. You will need to get the tissues out for this one. Listen to Part 1 (episode 152) HERE. Sign up to the next FREE 30 Day Get Your Sparkle Back Challenge HERE. 29 Dec 2020 | 228 - Marie's single mum story | 01:47:28
In this episode, I have Marie, a single mum and member of my Thrive Tribe community joining me. Marie met her husband when they were both working in the British Royal Navy. They served on the same ship together for over five years at which point they decided she would leave so they could get married and have children. After they got married and had a child, their marriage started to present cracks, and Marie agreed to immigrate to Australia with her husband in the hope that things would get better for their relationship. Marie found herself, mostly alone, in a foreign country, with a toddler and a new baby and suffering with Post Natal Depression. At the same time, her relationship with her husband got worse and the emotional abuse she was receiving increased. They moved across the country to be closer to her (then) husband's parents and things only got worse. Her husband and his family were incredibly unsupportive of her joining the Police Force Academy to fulfil her dream of joining the Police Force. To make matters worse, Marie then suffered a stroke. Before long she realised she had completely lost herself. In this episode, Marie shares her story. She talks about:
Today, Marie is a single mum, she has a positive go-getter attitude, she is a full-time police officer, she is starting to get back to being her, and is working on improving things every day. 02 Aug 2022 | 309 - Emotional avoidance | 00:20:24
In this week’s episode, I talk about emotions, managing emotions, and how they can affect our body if we avoid dealing with them. When emotional trauma occurs, there is the choice to either deal with the emotions effectively or avoid them. For many people, avoidance becomes their primary coping mechanism, because the trauma is too painful to deal with at the time. Or it may be because there isn't the capacity to deal with it at that time. Instinctively we want to avoid pain and discomfort and would very much rather avoid facing these emotions head-on. But emotional avoidance, if left unchecked over time, can extend suffering and, in the long run, may do more harm than good. What you resist, persists. In this episode, I talk about what suppressed emotions can do to our body and mind when we don't release them. Listen as I share some tips on how to identify your avoidance coping mechanisms and take steps toward making changes to help you heal. 15 Jan 2019 | 127 - International parental child abduction: Lisa Kennedy's story Part 1 | 01:06:30
Lisa Kennedy met her husband when she was 21 years old. It was love at first sight. They got married and built a life, business, and family together in Australia. Nine years into their marriage they were on a routine holiday in Turkey with their 8-month-old son when one day her husband took their son to visit his parents. When he had not returned later that day, Lisa called him only to be told that he wouldn't be returning. He told her he had filed for divorce, he was keeping their son in Turkey with him, and she should go back to Australia. Lisa's nightmare had begun. For four years, and beyond she fought to bring her son home. After fighting the case simultaneously through the Turkish and international courts, and getting in touch with politicians, and doing everything she could legally, she was left with no choice. She had to save her son, and escape Turkey back to Australia. With sixty minutes on her side, she attempted the unimaginable. Lisa has since written a book about her experience. In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, Julia chats with single mum Kate Mather and single dad Michael Hayes. Raising three children (two of them boys) as a single mum, Kate worried about being able to provide "manly" opportunities to her sons, and so who better to team up with than single dad and outdoor expedition adventurer Michael Hayes? Michael has been conducting outdoor adventure programs with corporates, professional sporting teams and family groups for the last 20 years. He has a Bachelor of Exercise Science, a diploma of Outdoor Recreation, and he is a Former QLD and NSW Rugby Union player. He has also worked with CEO of The Making Of Men, Arne Rubinstein, in his leadership training programs. Together, Kate and Michael decided to create a program called a ‘Rite of Passage’ for boys. 19 Oct 2021 | 270 - Kimberley's Story (Part 6) | 01:30:43
This week on the show, single mum Kimberley shares Part 6 of her story. Please note that these contain sensitive topics on domestic abuse and violence. It is recommended you listen to Parts 1 - 5 prior to listening to Part 6, but here's a short recap of the past episodes. In Ep 269 - Part 5, Kimberley explains how she felt completely stuck with nowhere to go after calling the Police for advice and being told she could take an AVO out that would protect her, but not her children. She talks more about his violent outbursts and his sexist attitudes and tells us about the suicide threats he would make to their children. Kimberley also shares the details of the night the nightmare she was living finally came to an end and what happened after that. In this episode, Kimberley shares the final part of her story. She talks about how the kids had no interest in seeing their father (and still don't 7 years later after the police took him away), how she had no sleep for two years as he continued to breach court orders and she lived on high alert. She also talks about the court process and the supervised visits and phone calls that were ordered for the children to spend time with their dad. And how he would continue to use these phone calls as a way to torment Kimberley and even do things like bark at her. She also talks about what it was like at the contact centre for supervised visits and about the Independent Children's Lawyer that was provided. Kimberley also talks about finding out about her ex's new partner and their two children and the emotions that came along with that. And finally, Kimberley shares how she gained her freedom and the empowerment that has come from sharing her story. She also talks about the impacts the whole experience has had on her, from a mental health perspective and otherwise, and how she feels about it now. And lastly - the next steps for Kimberley. 13 Sep 2022 | 315 – The emotional journey of relationship and separation | 00:20:19
Today I talk with you about the emotional journey and transition from being in a partnership or marriage to being a single parent. All divorces start with a relationship, and like any kind of loss, the end of a marriage may trigger various reactions. In this episode, I share the phases that may help you understand where you are now and provide some advice to help you navigate this difficult time. I also talk about the 3-year stages of the transition process. Transition is hard, and sometimes we resist it out of fear, frustration, and impatience. It’s important to have that knowledge and to trust the process. Change is not instant and may take time to allow for our transitioning. 09 Aug 2022 | 310 - Avoidance | 00:20:54
You can probably recall situations in your life that have made you uncomfortable. Right now, you may already be trapped in a cycle of avoidance without even knowing it. Avoidance in general are actions a person takes to escape from difficult thoughts and feelings. It may cause panic and anxiety when not managed properly. And you may find yourself restricting your life as you avoid people, events, and opportunities in an attempt to keep anxiety at bay. This can create an unhealthy and vicious cycle which intensifies over time. In this episode I will discuss what exactly avoidance is. In order to change anything, you must first start becoming aware of when it’s occurring, so I will also share different types of avoidance coping, graded exposure therapy and other strategies for healthy emotional coping techniques plus breaking the cycle of avoidance. I hope it helps you! Links mentioned in the episode: Join the Thrive Tribe waitlist HERE. 19 Sep 2017 | Episode 58 - A single mum's story of courage | 00:59:12
In this episode of the Single Mother Survival Guide Podcast, I chat with single mum Rosemary. It's an incredible story of courage. We talk about Rosemary's story of becoming a single mum - the hurdles that she crossed in deciding to end the relationship, and how she came to the decision that leaving was the best option for her and her daughter. We also talk about how she found her feet and redefined herself and her expectations of future relationships, what the whole experience taught her daughter and teaching her daughter to make decisions that empower her through role modeling those actions herself, the stigma that it's better for kids if their parents are together, and the benefits and challenges she has come across in becoming a single parent. This is a really amazing and insightful discussion and one of my favourite conversations to date. Links Mentioned in Podcast: To contact Julia, email: julia@singlemothersurvivalguide.com. 17 Mar 2020 | 188 - Traveling around Australia for five months with a three-year-old; Hayley's story (Part 4) | 01:19:29
In this episode, we hear from Hayley who last spoke to us in January 2019. In episodes 131 (Part 1), 132 (Part 2), and 133 (Part 3) she shared her story and experience with sudden wife abandonment and the grief that she experienced for the 12 months following. Hayley thought her relationship with her husband had been a fairytale. They had been together for more than nine years. They had travelled, enjoyed hiking and doing things together in the outdoors, had just finished renovating a home and had just had a baby. Hayley was very much in love. So when her husband's demeanour changed and he then casually told her that he didn't love her anymore, her whole world stopped. But, as shocking as this story is, ultimately it’s a story of hope and one woman's strength. Hayley shared how she dealt with her grief and how she climbed out of the depths of despair. In this episode, we catch up on what she has been doing in the 12 months since we spoke, and it is nothing short of amazing! Hayley decided that she was not going to let 2019 be as bad as 2018. She spontaneously bought a motor home and then spent 5 months on the road, with her three-year-old daughter, driving 13,000 km around Australia. She tells us all about the trip and how pivotal it was in her healing. She talks about the people she met, things that went wrong and how she overcame them, and about the highlights... riding a bike around Uluru with her daughter, making her way through Litchfield National Park, exploring Kakadu and looking for crocodiles, travelling through the outback, swimming with turtles off Fitzroy Island, and so much more. She also shares how she managed the long car drives with a toddler, and how she managed to do everything solo. Also in this episode, Hayley updates us on the situation with her ex-husband. She tells us about the discovery of her ex having twins with the woman he had has an affair with (and finding out about it via Instagram) and how she overcame the sadness and jealousy that she felt about him having the big family that she always wanted, and how she now sees it is a blessing.
