ABOUT THE GUEST

My studio in Jersey is a safe, cosy and eccentric abode to learn Contemporary Vocal techniques as well as performance skills and repertoire, public speaking coaching and artist development, whilst intertwining holistic mindsets essential for all human beings.

If we look back hundreds of years our ancestors used voice as medicine, connection and healing - as do certain animals like whales, toadfish, crickets and birds!

My holistic singing studio is known to be a ‘confidence haven,’ a place you can find your ground, learn about your vocal anatomy, vocal pedagogy and where your unique voice is rooted in you.

A few examples of the holistic side of my practice is singing barefoot, crystal healing (connection to the voice is fascinating for children), mindfulness and music as a therapy. My aim is to allow singers of all ages to emotionally communicate and express themselves in a non-judgmental space.

Opening the power within the voice and sharing your creative gift reaps so many health benefits for those who dare try.

31 Oct 2019Ep.21 From performer to healer, via an injury with Stephen King00:51:14

Stephen King started his performance career with great promise. On the road to a dance and MT career, Stephen had to take a dramatic turn away from performing after a serious knee injury. With all the physical therapy and medical attention he received Stephen found himself pulled into the world of manual therapy and decided to combine it with singing teaching.

Stephen has worked as a vocal coach and MD for 20+ productions as well as being a residential teacher for a variety of colleges and academies. He is deeply committed to learning all he can about the performer’s anatomy and physiology and regularly trains with vocal, medical and physical clinicians to hone his skills even further. With a passion for helping to prevent vocal and physical injuries in performers and singers, Stephen is a key player in health promotion in the performing arts world.

In this podcast, Stephen dives into his rather unconventional journey as a performer turned manual therapist and anatomy geek. He explains the importance of touch, emotionally, mentally and physically. He also talks about how vocal hyperfunction occurs and how it can be treated, how heel height can impact the larynx, his pet peeve, the proton pump inhibitor and his goals for changing the way singers are treated.

Nutritionist and author, Stephanie Moore is a powerhouse of nutritional and health information. It's becoming more and more accepted that health and wellbeing begins from the inside. Stephanie and Line discuss how gut health impacts not only the performer's general health but also their brain  health and function. Do you experience 'brain fog'? Well, this could be down to your gut health. Stephanie gives advice on how we can help singers understand the impact of their general health and wellbeing on their voice and performance, useful supplements to boost the immune system, why sleep is important to health and practical nutritional advice. Stephanie also advises how a singing teacher can help a singer who they suspect might have eating issues, and how to counter the often quite sedentary work-life a teacher experiences at the piano.

ABOUT THE GUEST

Stephanie is a clinical nutritionist, author and health coach with a degree in nutritional medicine and a Masters degree in counselling and psychotherapy. She has worked as a natural health and physical therapist for over 30 years combining her numerous skill sets to help people with all kinds of health issues, both physical and psychological.  Stephanie is head of nutrition at Grayshott Medical Spa where she oversees a radical 7-day digestive health regime that she co-developed 8 years ago and is Lead Nutritionist at a cutting edge medical and sports clinic that opened in July 2019 in Mayfair, London.

Stephanie published her first book in 2017: ‘Why Eating Less & Exercising More Makes You Fat!’, which explains why conventional weight loss advice fails and what to do instead to achieve permanent health and weight loss goals and she has co-authored a new book on SuperFoods with doctor of biochemistry and health campaigner, Dr James DiNicolantonio, to be published in 2020. Stephanie is now researching her new book on learning to love your wrinkles and the psychological and physical cost of trying to reverse the ageing process.

24 Aug 2022Ep.74 Understanding Manual Therapy with Walt Fritz00:48:33

This week Alexa is joined by a physical therapist, whose approach to manual therapy has evolved to consider bio-psychosocial influences, as well as incorporating shared decision making between clinician and patient, Walt Fritz. Walt is on Singing Teachers’ Talk today to tell you all about manual therapy.

Check out the BAST Youtube channel to watch Walt work with Alexa, offering her a series of patient-perspective, self-guided exercises to help relieve symptoms of a vocal difficulty

KEY MOMENTS

‘Ask ten clinicians what manual therapy is then you’ll get twenty different answers’

‘I was trained that it was all about the connective tissues, then my evolution started’

‘Our work is not about what we do with the tissue, it’s about what we do with the person’

RELEVANT LINKS & MENTIONS

ABOUT THE GUEST

Walt Fritz is a physical therapist from Upstate New York, USA. Since beginning work as a manual therapy educator in the mid-1990s, he has more recently evolved into teaching a unique interpretation of manual therapy for speech-language pathologists, registered dental hygienists, voice professionals, and related communities. This approach advances views of causation and impact from historical tissue-specific models into a multifactorial narrative, leaning heavily on biopsychosocial influences. His principles apply to a broad spectrum of intervention models using a model of evaluation and intervention that incorporates shared decision-making rather than clinician-as-expert. Unlike traditional laryngeal manipulation, Walt offers the clinician and patient a more subtle approach, aligning well with newer models and allowing the patient to frame the intervention from their preferences. Seeing the utility of manual therapy not as a standalone treatment but as an integral part of clinicians' more extensive body of work, Walt makes his approach easily assimilated into those treatment protocols.

Walt presents his workshops internationally through his Foundations in Manual Therapy Seminars, WaltFritz.com, and maintains a physical therapy practice in Upstate, NY.

Narrowly missing a serious vocal injury, he relearned his instrument and started on a never-ending journey of vocal development.

After seeking help and turning his own seemingly ‘hopeless’ voice around, Chris realised he might also be able to help other singers and moved into vocal coaching.

Chris has worked with major label artists, West End leads, backing vocalists, singer/songwriters and vocal coaches. He also helps singing teachers worldwide to up-skill, navigate the overwhelming amount of pedagogical options, and develop their own technical and business acumen.

Chris has also trained in manual laryngeal therapies and studied with scientists in vocal acoustics, physical and somatic therapy, and laryngology. He’s also one half of The Naked Vocalist podcasting/blogging duo.

24 Oct 2023Ep.134 How to Get Your Students to Practise with Line Hilton00:47:24

Back in 2019, teenager Eddie Cortez went viral for a letter that he wrote to his teacher, explaining why he didn't do his homework. In that letter, he said, "I don't want to do school work over the weekend because it's a stress-free time to go out with friends, watch TV, play games. I don't do it also because it makes me very mad and unhappy. I do what makes me happy because I want to be happy. Homework is not a real thing in the real world, so we should not have to do it in school because it's not useful." BAST Founder Line Hilton joins Alexa to discuss the excuses we encounter with our students about why they can't practise their craft.

KEY MOMENTS

‘Practise is just a way of reinforcing the thing we want to do’

‘Don’t stop at “it didn’t work”, ask yourself what do I need to do to make it work’

‘Having a specific strategy is needed for practice, just running the song through with no plan is not practice’

‘People aren’t motivated by what we think. People want autonomy’

He's a trained Alexander Technique teacher himself and is an assistant at a training school for teachers of the Alexander Technique in Paris. Patrick is here to tell us where the technique originated from, how it can benefit singers, and he also shares with us an exercise that we can try out for ourselves and use in the studio with the singers we work with.

KEY MOMENTS

‘The technique isn't an activity where you do it and get on with life, it’s a re-education’

‘It’s difficult to let go of something that feels familiar and do something unfamiliar instead’

‘You can’t ask someone’s brain to do something if they’ve never experienced before’

‘Almost everybody I see tends to stand in a way which interferes with the breathing mechanism’

ABOUT THE GUEST

During a 35-year singing career Patrick toured and recorded widely, working at the Royal Opera, with the BBC Singers and Westminster Abbey choir, in several French opera companies and ensembles, in film and broadcasts and, for some years, as the bass voice of the Swingle Singers.

Now living in France, he continues to perform alongside his teaching, and is assistant at a Training School for teachers of the Alexander Technique in Paris. Patrick uses his understanding of voice and breathing integrated with the Alexander Technique in private lessons and workshops, in France and the UK, and also to support people approaching the end of life.

27 Sep 2019Ep.20 Voice science works - it really does with David Harris and Laurel Irene from VoiceScienceWorks00:34:42

In this podcast Line Hilton talks to Laurel Irene and Dr David Harris from VoiceScienceWorks. These two met several years ago at Dr Ingo Titze's Summer Vocology Institute at the National Center for Voice & Speech and have not been apart since!

In the beginning, like many singers and singing teachers, they struggled to translate the scientific knowledge into practical strategies for their voices and the voices of those that they worked with. So they set about to unravel the complexities of voice science into a singer friendly language. They have also been developing practical tools and strategies that work whether or not you understand the science behind it.

Laurel and David love sharing their knowledge and understanding of voice science and helping others to understand the power of this knowledge. They work with singers online and in person, and take their educational programme on the road.

In this podcast, we find out how they got into the science, how it helps them in their work and what's in store for their up and coming VSW European 2019 tour.

16 Nov 2018Ep.11 Just getting started...a new teacher's story with Matt Thorns01:10:05

This podcast is a bit different as I am talking to recent BAST Graduate, Matt Thorns, about his journey. Matt started out singing as a six-year-old chorister in Oxford. He talks about his vocal experience going through puberty. He then moved into general performing arts and eventually music production and songwriting. He noticed that he was spending a lot of time helping singers to get the best out of their voices in the studio, and he was enjoying the role more and more. In the interview, Matt reveals the top issues he found singers to have when in a recording studio setting.

Eventually, his coaching interest blossomed into a desire to find out more and to delve into the performance coaching world further eventually bringing him to the 20 Hour BAST course, which he took with  Kaya Herstad Carney. He talks about his biggest obstacle, lack of confidence, as a new teacher and how he overcame it, and the current challenges he is experiencing. Together we discuss how to deliver an online lesson along with a variety of other teaching topics.

RELEVANT LINKS & MENTIONS

ABOUT THE GUEST

Dr. Felix Graham is a New York-based performer, teacher, conductor and author. Felix found his musical 'home' by way of the operatic and concert stage where started life as a 'pants' mezzo - his primary repertoire consisting primarily of pants roles, or operatic drag – women singing young male characters...or sometimes, the more complicated version: a woman playing a young man, disguised as young woman.  As he explored gender transition in his personal life, he was inspired by the recursive nature of these pants roles, bringing that gender fluidity and characterisation to cabaret as well as his concert repertoire.

As an academic, Dr. Graham has presented research and workshops at home and abroad on vocal habilitation, gender, trans voice and inclusive choral methods. His private teaching practices focuses on vocal health and retraining, as well as guiding clients in reconciling their voice and personal identity. Additionally, he taught choral methods and applied voice at Teachers College, Columbia University and the City University of New York, served as musical director for the off-Broadway production Love is a Many-Splintered Thing, and currently serves as music director of the TRANScend Vocal Ensemble in New York City.

26 Oct 2021Ep.33 The Chimp Paradox by Professor Steve Peters Book Review00:13:09

As you may or may not know we like to give you our reviews of resources and books as recommendations for you to add to your list, or sometimes leave off the list. And in this podcast, Alexa will be giving her review of The Chimp Paradox by Professor Steve Peters and explaining why she believes it's a book every adult could benefit from, as well as why the model is so easily applicable to coaches.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • The likes of Sir Chris Hoy, Steven Gerrard, and Sir Bradley Wiggins have all advocated Peters’ work and have used the model described in the book as ways to achieve their successes.
  • In a nutshell, for me, The Chimp Paradox is a revealing and encouraging mind management, self-help resource for adults.
  • Throughout the book, the emotional centre - or the limbic system, is referred to as a ‘chimp’ and the more logical centre as the ‘human’, and Peter's details the relationship between the two. That battle between head and heart.
