08 Jul 2022Why You MUST Sacrifice To Be Successful - Ade Hassan MBE | PEP Talk S3 E2200:26:53

Ade Hassan knew she was onto something with Nubian Skin lingerie when she posted the first product photo on social media and gained one-thousand new followers in a week. It was 2014 and the photo went on to garner over thirty-five thousand notes on Tumblr and over twenty thousand followers on Instagram, in less than a month. The UK-born, London-based founder created the brand to satisfy her own need but the internet’s response let her know that she’d struck a chord.

After graduate school, Ade went into a career in finance but couldn’t find suitable skin-tone lingerie and hosiery to go with her wardrobe. If she was experiencing this problem, she imagined that other women of colour had the same need. What she didn’t realise was how immediate the need was.

Nubian Skin has had an out-sized influence on the fashion industry, with many other parts of the industry realising the need to be more inclusive. In 2017 Ade was awarded an MBE at Buckingham Palace for services to fashion. The award was made to recognise Ade’s commitment to her mission to redefine nude, and the impact she has consequently made on the fashion industry. In this episode, Ade tells us about the sacrifice that must be made in entrepreneurship, how she found her purpose, how she was awarded an MBE and much more.

20 May 2022Grind Founder/CEO: How To Fight Against The Big Brands (And Win) - David Abrahamovitch | PEP Talk S3 E1600:27:11

David Abrahamovitch is the CEO and Founder of Grind. Grind has expanded across London with cafés and a coffee roastery since its inception in Shoreditch in 2011. David took Grind online when he was forced to close his cafés due to lockdown and since then, hundreds of thousands of people have used Grind to make better, more sustainable coffee at home.

Grind creates compostable Nespresso coffee pods that decompose faster than a banana peel in your compost or food waste bin. They use organic and ethically sourced coffee from around the world. Despite going to a school that pushed its students to aim for a career working for somebody else, David knew he was capable of more and now wants to help other young entrepreneurs do the same.

In this episode, David explains his story of starting a coffee brand before anybody knew what a ‘flat white’ was, and he shows us how he has built a business that is now taking on the huge coffee brands around the world.

“What you have to do as the organisation grows is be responsible for the culture. You have to be responsible for making big decisions, and you have to be able to get all of the experts that work for you to point in the same direction. That’s not always easy.”

Topics:

  • David’s background
  • How Grind started
  • Hiring people who are better than you
  • How Grind survived the pandemic
  • How to take on the big brands

02 Sep 2022How To Start A Business You Love (With The People You Love) - Chris Hannaway00:27:05

Chris Hannaway founded Infinite Session with his brother Tom in 2018. They set out with a goal of creating an alcohol-free beer that actually tastes like beer, just like you'd find in your local craft brewery. Infinite beers sell worldwide, predominantly in UK and US supermarkets and have won several World Beer Awards, including when judged against alcoholic beers!

Unlike alcohol-free beers of the past, Infinite Session is unrestrained. Infinite Session stands for more when alcohol-free beer has always been defined by restriction. They believe that beer is bigger than booze: no more covering labels or whispering orders at the bar. Drinking should be on your terms because the flavour is more important than ABV.

In this episode, Simon and Chris discuss how to go about starting a business you love, working with family and much more.

Topics

  • Chris’ background and how Infinite Session was born
  • How to get into entrepreneurship
  • The importance of market research
  • Working with family
  • If you had to start again, what would you do differently?

05 Aug 2022How Do You Build A Sustainable Business? - Ryan McSorley00:29:43

Ryan and his Co-founder Josie have a combined 20 years of experience working for consumer goods brands, from Ecover and Method and Ella’s Kitchen to PepsiCo and Starbucks. Having both worked for larger cleaning brands for several years, we were aware of the fact that cleaning products are often 90% water and packaged in single-use plastic. Globally, homecare generates around 29.5 billion bottles each year, and in the UK less than one-third of plastic is recycled, according to Euromonitor.

Ryan believes that the planet and people deserve a better option and felt that with their experience they could build something that would have a real impact on the industry. So they set out on a mission to reimagine clean. To create cleaning products that would be a real sustainable step change with no single-use plastic and no more unnecessary water.

In this episode, Simon and Ryan discuss why putting yourself in the shoes of your consumer is so important, sustainability in business and much more. If you enjoy this podcast send it to a friend so you can level up together!

29 Jul 2022How To Protect Your Business Online (Get Your Dream Domain) - GoDaddy’s Nick Webster | PEP Talk00:21:03

Nick Webster is a Website Security expert and hosting specialist at GoDaddy UK. Understanding the topics discussed today is essential when starting a business and could save you millions in the future. The simplicity and speed of creating websites have increased in recent years. Business owners are now webmasters thanks to content management systems and support from experts like GoDaddy.

You may have the question  “what is web hosting?” Well, one way is to think of a website like a house. All houses have two related parts: an address and a piece of land where the house sits. Websites work similarly.

Domain names are like a house’s street address. It’s where people go to visit your website. Web hosting is like the land where you build your house. This is the space on the Internet where you place your website’s files. Typically, web hosting runs on a server owned by a web hosting company — your web hosting is just a small section of the company’s  server.

Every website on the Internet, no matter how big or small absolutely must have a domain name and web hosting.

In this episode, Nick tells Simon all the ins and outs of website hosting and explains all the fundamentals you need to know to protect your business online.

Top Tips:

Make sure that you get yourself an SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). This will give you a protective layer, just to make sure that no invasive attacks can come in.

You will want to make sure that your name is not on the public registry to ensure that your contact details are not listed publicly on the web. GoDaddy Privacy Protection prevents your personal/business details from being freely accessible. Get yourself domain protection, just to make sure that your name is off, and you'll be good to go.

27 May 2022How To Overcome Fear (Why Fear Is Actually GOOD) - Catherine Sweet | PEP Talk S3 E1700:32:45

Catherine Sweet is a self-taught visual artist from London who created BobCat Gallery to sell her own work and showcase beautiful, affordable and original artwork on a small scale and give emerging artists a positive selling experience. Catherine creates small-scale abstract pieces inspired by music and the natural world that people can easily find space for in their homes.

BobCat Gallery focuses on small-scale, original and affordable artwork. They also host pop-up exhibitions across London, as well as heading to affordable art fairs to showcase work from their portfolio of international artists. The name for the gallery is inspired by Catherine's friend Robert Miller (known as Bob), who passed away in 2010. Bob was an incredibly talented artist himself, and Catherine (often known as Cat) wanted to honour his memory.

In this episode, Catherine and Simon dive into the topic of fear. Something that we all feel in very different ways, fear can actually be a sign that you are on the right path. No matter what business you want to start, it’s very normal to feel a sense of fear, and this podcast will help you use fear to your advantage.

“Sometimes fear can be a blocker in a major way. You don’t know if it’s going to work, you have to try it! The worst thing I can think of is the regret that you haven’t tried at all.”

13 May 2022The Scary Skill That Will Change Your Life: Public Speaking - Alex Merry | PEP Talk S3 E1500:29:34

Alex co-founded Champions Life Academy, a sales and marketing organisation that gave students with job experience fundraising for charity, before starting his own business. He spent three months giving daily presentations to university students as part of his job.

The chance to develop and organise TEDxClapham, a public speaking community event in South London, presented itself. He accomplished this in conjunction with Champions Life Academy until 2016, when Alex and his colleagues decided to close the firm. He organised a public speaking session for Google Startups Campus, a group of entrepreneurs that come to Google for events, guidance, and mentorship. Following that, 10 individuals signed up for his trial public speaking programme, launching his company.

What makes a successful public speaker, according to Alex, can be summed up in one word: empathy. "It has nothing to do with whether you're introverted or extroverted; it's all about empathy and being tuned in to your audience." Simon and Alex examine what it takes to be a world-class speaker in this episode, as well as why purpose comes first in the company.

“Don’t let yourself get in the way of the opportunities that get thrown at you, because you never know who’s going to be watching.”

18 Feb 2022When is the right time to seek investment for your business? Rachel Kettlewell - Fearn and Rosie: PEP Talk S3 E300:30:04

Rachel Kettlewell is a mother of three who founded the reduced sugar jam brand ‘Fearne and Rosie’ while on maternity leave. Fearne and Rosie jam strives to give healthier, tastier and happier food choices for children and their families and is sold in major stores across the UK such as Waitrose, Morrisons and Ocado.

Prior to taking her business full time, Rachel was a teacher in a school, and she noticed that there was no legislation requiring schools to provide healthy breakfasts. All too often kids would be loaded up with sugar at breakfast time which would have a negative impact both on their day and their overall health. To combat this issue, Rachel set to creating a jam that now saves the average family of four from consuming 800 sugar cubes per year.

Rachel famously appeared on BBC’s Dragon’s Den last year, where she turned down a £40,000 investment from Tej Levani. In this episode, Rachel explains to us the challenging story of starting a business with three kids and two jobs, as well as her reasoning for turning down Tej Levani’s investment.

“I realised that being a teacher in a classroom I could impact maybe a thousand people, but by starting Fearne and Rosie I could impact millions of children’s lives.”

11 Feb 2022Reebok Founder: How We Built A Brand That Beat Nike - Joe Foster | PEP TALK - S3 EP 200:36:38

Joe Foster is the founder of the legendary shoe brand Reebok, which he started with his brother Jeffrey in 1958.  During his time at Reebok, Joe built the brand to become bigger than Nike and pioneered what we today call influencer marketing.

Reebok's roots began with the JW Foster brand, founded by his grandfather (also known as Joe Foster) in 1900 to make running shoes for local athletes in Bolton. Elder Foster pioneered the spikes intended to be attached to sneakers, this improved traction and was first molded in 1895. He was educated in the shoe manufacturing industry by his own grandfather, Samuel Foster, in the 1860s to make shoes for cricket players.

Joe worked for the family business up until 1858, when he decided to leave to start his own brand with his brother. The brand’s original name was actually ‘Mercury Sportswear’, however, the brothers ran into problems when registering their trade name, so the name was changed to Reebok in 1960.

Joe spent 31 years growing Reebok, growing the brand into the biggest sportswear name of its time, before he left the company in 1990. Joe’s journey is one fueled by passion and persistence, and we hear all about the challenges he faced on today’s podcast.

24 Aug 2021PEP TALK 19 | Jack Tang, Co-Founder & CEO Urban00:23:33
In episode 19 of PEP Talk, Simon interviews Jack Tang. Jack is the co-founder and CEO of Urban (formerly known as Urban Massage), the on-demand app on a mission to empower people through wellness. Founded in 2014, it is now the leading at-home massage, fitness and wellness platform. They have built a network of over 2,500 wellness professionals offering at-home massage, physiotherapy, osteopathy and beauty treatments. What started as a way to book wellness online become much more. Jack and co-founder Giles Williams discovered an industry that was broken: practitioners typically took home only 20% of booking revenue and worked long hours to make ends meet. Meanwhile, customers had little other than a salon’s reputation to go off of before making a booking with a specific practitioner. Since then, the duo envisioned a platform that would benefit practitioners and customers alike. On Urban, practitioners take home 72% of bookings. And customers are able to choose between trusted, pre-vetted practitioners, thanks to detailed profiles with personal bios, ratings and reviews. To date, Urban has enabled the delivery of 300,000+ treatments generating economic value of more than £25M. Urban currently operates in London, Paris, Birmingham and Manchester, and is backed by London's leading VC funds including Felix Capital, Passion Capital and LCIF. Jack is a Forbes 30 under 30 honouree and co-founded Urban in 2014 following the successful sale of his first start-up which became the UK’s largest student job portal.

08 Apr 2022How To Launch Your Business (The Right Way) - Fills Founder Anna Priadka | PEP Talk S3 E1000:35:09

Manchester-born, Anna Priadka is a make-up artist and founder of Fiils, a luxe hair and body line offering custom refillable, designed to overhaul bathrooms of single use plastic and waste. Anna has been in the beauty industry for over 15 years, working as a makeup artist for some of the largest direct-to-consumer brands such as MAC/Bobbi Brown, and assisting some of the industry’s biggest talents.

After being on the front line Anna progressed into a global role with NARS, where she assisted with new product development, artistry, and events direction. It was here that she discovered she had a passion for not just the creative, but the business side – she’d always said that she would like to own her own business and took the chance in 2018, leaving her corporate role to start her first brand in the lip category.

The lessons Anna learned from this venture as an entrepreneur were invaluable and although the business was successful in the very short term, she realised it wasn’t sustainable.Anna’s current company, fiils, was born out of her mission to contribute positively to the industry by reducing consumption, as well as a personal need to reduce waste in her own routine.

“If you enjoy creating things, creating a brand is actually quite easy. The hardest part is what do you do afterwards? There’s so much more that goes into launching a product and running a business. That was a real struggle for me, but I wouldn’t change anything about my journey.”

Nigel first came up with the idea for Whirli after many of his friends became parents and he was suddenly surrounded by conversations surrounding children’s toys. From the cost of constantly purchasing new toys as their children grew out of the old ones, to issues with cluttering in their home. With UK consumers spending £370m on toys in 2018 and a poll by the British Heart Foundation discovering more than a quarter of parents admit to throwing away toys that are in perfect working order - it is clear that there is a need to provide an affordable, sustainable alternative. Conscious of this gap in the market, Nigel left his corporate job to start Whirli in 2018 - a venture that uses the power of sharing to help parents save money, declutter their homes, and consume eco-consciously.
