In this episode of the Silver Stumps podcast England O60s captain Richard Merriman joins hosts Grant Timms and Trevor Lee to reflect on the Over 60s Cricket World Cup final in which England were beaten by Australia. Richard is very candid in his recognition that this was ultimately a game too far for his team and that the Australians were well deserved winners who were particularly awesome in the field as well as very accurate with their bowling. Richard also talks about the time after the final when the squad spent time with the street children of India who are mad keen on cricket and he reflects on the humbling experience that that was. Richard also looks ahead to the five match series coming up this summer against Pakistan starting in early July. Pakistan were the inaugural winners of the Over 60s World Cup and have a squad that contains several ex-test players led by Salim Malik. We plan to be at one of the games with our podcast gear to cover it for a future episode. Here are the final results of the Over 60s World Cup tournament:

05 Apr 2024 | Paul Farbrace - Coaching, Fitness, Technique and Tips for O60s Cricketers | 00:45:55
In this episode of the Silver Stumps podcast Sussex head coach Paul Farbrace joins hosts Grant Timms and Trevor Lee to talk coaching, fitness, techniques and tips for Over 60s cricketers. Paul provides a fascinating insight into being an international cricket coach as well as providing a host of tips and advice for Over 60s cricketers from being passionate about playing to learning how to master the reverse sweep. As a coach Paul explains that the greatest thing a coach can have is empathy whilst getting to know players as a person and being there to give and boost confidence. For the O60s Paul believes that having passion for the game is one of the keys to success along with playing the first 6-10 balls before you go out to bat and using the warm up to get your eye-hand coordination working. He suggests throwing a rugby ball around, doing catching drills in 2/3s and hitting full tosses when batting. As a batsman Paul believes you need to set the field not the bowler and using the reverse sweep is a way of doing that. It’s never too late to learn new skills eg reverse sweeping and to ensure your passion for the game burns brightly. 16 Apr 2024 | Dave Murphy - O60s/70s formats for 2024 | 00:25:11
In this episode of the Silver Stumps podcast National Management team man and Warwickshire player Dave Murphy joins hosts Grant Timms and Trevor Lee to explain the new look formats for 2024, in particular the phase two group stages for the O60s 1st and 2nd XI competitions. Here’s a summary of the formats: O60s 1st XI : 33 teams in 6 groups (it was 5 in 2023) - North (6 teams) - East (5), Midlands (5), South East (5), South East Midlands (6) and SouthWest (6). The top 2 teams in each group progress in the Championship Cup phase 2 league which will be geographically divided so the 6 teams qualifying from the North, East and Midlands will be in Group A and the 6 teams from the other 3 regions in Group B The six teams will play each other home and away but teams won’t play against the same team that was in their original group, which means there will be eight matches in this phase 2 group stage The top two then in each of the groups qualify for the semifinals with the winner of group A playing the runner-up of group B and vice versa An identical structure will apply to those finishing third and fourth in each of the six groups who will qualify for the Vase tournament with those finishing fifth and sixth, which will be 19 is in total, going into the Bowl tournament A similar structure will be happening for the O60s 2nd XI competition although in phase 1 with 30 teams there will be five groups of six The top two in each group go through into phase 2 league, with one group featuring three winners and two runners-up and the other group featuring two winners and three runners-up – the decision about replacing what group will be determined when the first phase is finished and geography taken into account In phase 2 teams will play four matches so once each against the teams in their phase 2 group with each county playing 2 home games and 2 away games The identical structure applies to those finishing third and fourth who will go into the O60s 2nd XI Vase competition and those finishing fifth and sixth who will go into the O60s 2nd XI Bowl competition The O60s 3rd XI competition features 17 teams who will play 12 matches prior to a quarter-final stage and in the O60s 4th XI competition there will be seven teams play each other home and away In the O70s 1st XI competition 25 teams will play 12 matches before going into the quarter-final stage and in the O70s 2nd XI competition five teams will play each other four times Grant and Trevor will be looking for future guests who can provide insights, tips, advice and inspiration to those playing cricket at this age and beyond! 14 Jun 2024 | O60s & O70s County Cricket Championship w/c June 3rd and 10th | 00:53:47
With Trevor away last week this bumper episode of the Silver Stumps podcast features matches from w/c June 3rd and w/c June 10th across the various O60s and O70 divisions. We do a fairly rapid walk-through of what’s happened picking out some individual and team highlights and we cover the one sided England v Wales O60s international played on June 12th. Scorecard here In the previous episode we mentioned Stephen 'Ned' Kelly who has now reached 150 matches. We had great responses from others who have played considerably more matches across the 50s/60s/70s. Bill Munday got in touch and he reckons he’s played 263 matches and is still playing twice a week for Berkshire in the 60s and 70s competitions as he approaches 77. Richard Owen was part of the Derbyshire O50s team that won the ECB competition in 2009, 2011 and 2012 and including 12 games he played for England he is at 244 matches. But then up popped Joe Perry from Norfolk who provided a list of 12 players who have played 150 games or more for Norfolk topped out by Martin Pearse with 387 matches. If you know people in your county who played 200+ games then let us know and we will give them a shout out. We are also keen to find out whether the 19 sixes that Devon O60s 1st XI plundered against Wiltshire is a competition record and indeed whether the 13 struck by Steve Luffman is an individual record. 28 Jun 2024 | Runs Galore in the 60s and 70s County Cricket Championship | 00:48:26
Lots of matches and lots of runs this week We review the matches played across the various O60s and O70 divisions on June 25th and 27th. It's replay week on July 2nd in the O60s Div 1 - can Surrey make the top 2 or will their defence of the title end here? They've got no game on replay week so will be relying on others. Wales smash 409/5 in O60s div 1 - highest of the season so far we think. Anyone know the all time record team score in 60s/70s? We also noted in the pro game Louis Kimber taking 43 off an Ollie Robinson over - anyone know the most runs scored in an over in the O60s and O70s comps? Chris Lailey of Gloucs made 192 not out in 60s Div 1 - highest individual score we think this year and Michael Shelvey took 6 for 6 - the last 6 to fall as he was 5th bowler - for Kent v Herts in O60s Div 4 - we think the first 6 wicket haul of the season. Please drop us a note to podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk if you know the answers to our questions or if you have a nomination for catch of the season. Next week's episode - out on July 5th - features England O60s captain Richard Merriman looking ahead to the 5 match ODI series v Pakistan which starts on July 8th and we will preview phase 2 of the 60s Div 1 competition which starts on July 9th. We are always on the look out for future guests who can provide insights, tips, advice and inspiration to those playing cricket at this age and beyond! 10 Jan 2025 | Winter Physical Preparation with Paolo Iorio | 00:36:04
Paolo Iorio is a practising osteopath based in Derbyshire who for the last 2 to 3 years has also been working with the England O60s team. We talk to Paolo about the role of an osteopath and then Paolo offers up lots of tips and advice for O60s and O70s cricketers who are beginning to think about the season ahead and their fitness / mobility. Paolo’s advice revolves around consistency in terms of a daily routine that might involve some strength and conditioning, some flexibility work and some sort of cardio vascular activity which could be anything from brisk walking to cycling to swimming to running. Paolo emphasises that the key is doing this on a regular basis rather than just occasionally. We talk about the benefits if you team up with a buddy or create a small Cricket community keen to improve their fitness and well being. One community to consider is the parkrun community. Parkrun happens at 1300 locations across the UK every Saturday morning at 9 am, so no matter where you are there's a very good chance a parkrun is close by. Use this link to register and then you will receive a barcode which you can download on your phone or print out and take with you and that will mean every time you take part you will receive lots of data which you can then use, to see and observe your fitness improvement All parkruns are 5km. You can start off by walking, progressing to run walking and then all in running If you want to know more about Paolo then follow this link to his website If you've got feedback or observations about the podcast or ideas for future guests please drop us an email to podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk or press ‘send us a message’ at the bottom of these notes - please include your name and contact details if you wish as we can’t reply direct to the text messages. 17 Feb 2025 | Scotland Seniors Cricket - Plans and Ambitions with Clark McConnachie | 00:29:15
Clark McConnachie is the captain of Scotland O60s. In this episode we talk to Clark about what's going on domestically as well as internationally for Scotland senior cricketers. Clark explains how for many years Scotland Over 60s and 70s have been under the banner of the Scotland Forty Club District but that all changed in the autumn when Scotland Seniors was set up to cover the current range of international age groups for Seniors Cricket: Over 40s, Over 50s, Over 60s and Over 70s. Clark explains how Scotland are currently preparing their application to be part of the International Masters Cricket organisation which if successful would then enable them to enter competitions such as the 2026 Over 60s World Cup in Canada. Clark also talks about the O60s international matches that Scotland have played in the last couple of years particularly the tri-nations tournament which involved England, England Lions and Wales. Some of the players including Clark did get international level experience by being part of the Rest of the World team at the 2024 O60s World Cup in Chennai. Being part of the O60s England and Wales County championship is something on the future radar and this season Scotland O60s will be playing friendlies against the northern based England counties on a mini tour at the start of the season. 02 Mar 2025 | Raise the Bat! We've got to 50! | 00:29:43
Who would've thought that just over a year since we launched we would be already pushing that quick single into a gap in the covers to get to our 50! Thank you to all our listeners and guests who made our first '50' such an enjoyable experience. We're taking fresh guard and looking to build on this foundation. In this 50th episode we talk about some of the highlights of a just over a year of podcasting. Episode one went out on February 4th 2024 which was a short introductory episode to get us onto all the various podcast apps and platforms. Four days later we had our first proper episode with then England over 60s captain Richard Merriman previewing the forthcoming over 60s World Cup in Chennai. In episode six the wonderful Ron Hedley came on and talked about the amazing walks he was organising to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer - £55k + £7k gift aid so far. Ron was followed by Lamby and Farby. Sybil Ruscoe reflected on her time as the first female cricket presenter when Channel 4 won the rights to broadcast England Test Cricket in 1999 Chris Lowe popped up to tell us about the over 70s World Cup and three weeks later, John Evans the England over 70s skipper came on to tell us about how England had won the O70s World Cup. We were thinking that we might struggle for content once the domestic season had finished but the O60s Grey Ashes in Australia gave us lots to talk about. Immediately after Christmas Rash and Mel Mahmood came on to talk about their experience of being Ashes scorer and state game umpire respectively for the Grey Ashes. We kicked off 2025 with Chris 'Noddy' Dearden followed by Paolo Iorio who offered some great tips for 60+ cricketers for their winter fitness preparations. We got to 49 with Scotland Over 60s captain Clark McConnachie talking about the plans and ambitions for Scotland Seniors Cricket. Tony Panecasio played a key part in Australia winning the O60s 2024 World Cup in Chennai and the Grey Ashes in November and December 2024. Tony had combined figures across the World Cup semi-final and final of 10-45 with his 4-32 in the final including a couple of stunning caught and bowled's. He won the trophy for most wickets at the 2024 O60s World Cup. In the Grey Ashes Tony took 10 wickets in the series bowling a full compliment of 9 overs in 4 of the 5 matches including 2 when he wasn’t in the batting XI. We talk about both the World Cup and the Grey Ashes with Tony or TP as he is widely known. Tony tells us how his Australia O60s adventure began with an out of the blue call in November 2023 from selector Eric Higgins. We also talk about Australia's O60s forthcoming tour to New Zealand and the changes to their squad for that. We also look ahead to Australia being back in England between June 24th and July 25th when once again the Grey Ashes will be at stake. Thank you to everyone who provides feedback. 08 Apr 2025 | Mike Hayden - Wales in Cape Town and the season ahead | 00:35:04
Mike Hayden is the captain of Wales O60s 1st XI. In March the team took part in a tournament in Cape Town alongside Zimbabwe (who went unbeaten and won the event), two evenly matched teams from South Africa, USA and USA A. Wales finished 3rd. We talk to Mike about the tournament which involved playing six matches in eight days and how to manage that workload when most players are used to playing only once or twice a week. We also discuss the idea of Wales O60s splitting into two 1st XI teams. An idea that came from the league rather from Wales. Plus we look ahead to the 2025 season with Wales competing in the tough South West regional group as well as playing England at Newport on May 23rd and finishing the season with the tri-nations competition. 17 Apr 2025 | Aidan Dennis reporting on the Malta Seniors Cricket Festival | 00:32:51
The Malta Seniors Cricket Festival took place between the 28th of March and the 5th of April at the Marsa sports club under the direction of tournament, founder and director Frank Spiteri and tournament referee Barrie Burns. Eight teams took part in this event which has been going since 2018 and not only provides a fantastic opportunity to play pre-season warm weather cricket but also raises not insignificant money for local charities and this year that included Ron Hedley's prostate cancer awareness walk fund as Ron organised a walk during the event. Aidan Dennis organised the Surrey team that took part and Aidan kindly came on the podcast to tell us all about the tournament and make us wish that we had been there! The eight teams were divided into two groups of four who all played each other and then the top two teams in both groups played in the final the next two in the third and fourth place match etc… The 30 overs a side matches were played on a synthetic wicket with two matches a day at the same ground. Batters had to retire after 50 balls. It does sound like a lot of fun and included an excursion to the area known as the Three Cities and special guests Henry Blofeld and John Emburey. The teams taking part were Norfolk and Suffolk combined, Cheshire, Essex and Buckinghamshire in group A And in group B Sussex, sorry Kent and Bedfordshire combined and an Australian team known as the Kangaroos. Our next episode, which will be recorded on Friday April 26th, will be a preview of the season ahead. If you would like to be mentioned then send us a two or three paragraph email about how you see the season ahead or better still record a one minute audio clip which we can edit into the episode. You can record on your phone and email the clip to us at podcast@trevorleemedia.co.uk - we need them no later than Thursday April 25th.
