Silicon Curtain (Jonathan Fink)

In the 2000s, London became home to the Russian super-rich. Vast wealth  was stripped from Russia by the Oligarchs, and flaunted in London  through grandiose properties, ferocious legal disputes, private jets,  mega-yachts, and ubiquitous bodyguards. Russian oligarchs made colossal  fortunes after the collapse of communism, and London was the destination  of choice to spend and protect their wealth. But the shocking killing  of ex-KGB man Alexander Litvinenko in London with a radio-active element  Polonium, and of Stephen Curtis, the lawyer to many of Britain’s  richest Russians, sent shockwaves through the Russian community in  London. Today I’m speaking with Mark Hollingsworth about how Russia’s  wealth was harvested and brought to London, and how the UK’s  institutions and legal infrastructure facilitated the laundering of  these vast fortunes, many of dubious provenance.   

Mark Hollingsworth is an investigative journalist and author of 10  books, notably ‘Londongrad – From Russia with Cash, the Inside Story of  the Oligarchs’ – published in 2010. He has also written biographies of  Mark Thatcher and Tim Bell and acclaimed studies on MI5 and the Saudi  Royal Family. He started his career working for Granada TV’s  award-winning ‘World in Action’ programme and now contributes regularly  to ‘The Times’, ‘Mail on Sunday’, ‘The Guardian’ and ‘The Sunday Times’.   His most recent articles about Russia are published in the Spectator.  He is currently writing a history of the KGB.

After Putin was foisted on Russians in 2000 as their new president, they  also chose to elect him. His direct and coarse language, threat and  intimation of violence attracted people, and continued to do so for 20  years. Russians’ fetish for strong leaders, and superficial social and  political stability has now backfired spectacularly. Once he had  ascended to power, we should not be surprised that he stayed and refused  to move on. Putin’s model of authoritarian leadership always leads to  tragedy and blood – humiliation and violence. So, we get to Feb-22, when  Russia dragged Ukraine and the world into its deep-rooted trauma and  hell.     

Peter Pomerantsev is a Soviet-born British journalist, author, and TV  producer. He is a Senior Fellow at the Institute of Global Affairs at  the London School of Economics, where he co-directs the Arena program.  He is also an associate editor at Coda Media. He has written two books  about Russian disinformation and propaganda: Nothing Is True, and  Everything Is Possible (2014) and This Is Not Propaganda (2019). Peter  was born into a Russian speaking Jewish family in Kyiv, in 1977. In  1978, he moved with his parents to West Germany, after his father,  broadcaster, and poet Igor Pomerantsev, was arrested by the KGB for  proliferating anti-Soviet literature. They later moved to Munich and  then London where Igor Pomerantsev worked for the BBC World Service.

Timothy Ash, who has been professional economist for more than 30 years, with two thirds of that in the banking industry. Timothy’s specialism is emerging European economics, and he writes and blogs extensively on economic challenges for leading publications such as the Kyiv Post, Atlantic Council, the Financial Times, and the United Business Journal. Of course, this is the opposite of the crushingly predictable, obvious, and cautious actions of Biden, guided by the Sullivan Doctrine. Soft appeasement and self-deterring de-escalation have given way to uncertainty. Edition No30 | 27-12-2023 It is suspected that nearly 80 Russian sailors were aboard the Novocherkassk landing ship during the strike by Ukraine. The missile hit the bow of the ship, leading to a massive explosion and fire. British defense minister claims Ukraine has destroyed 20% of Russian Black Sea fleet in just 4 months. Loud explosions were heard in the port area of Feodosia in temporarily occupied Crimea in the early hours of Dec. 26. Air Force Commander Mykola Oleschuk reported a strike on the large landing ship Novocherkassk, expressing gratitude to Ukrainian pilots. Russian propaganda is at its heart nihilistic. Its effects can be highly  corrosive, and it does not necessarily try to convince you of its point  of view. Rather it seeks to engender division, conflict and in some  circumstances apathy and inaction. Russia Today has been at the  forefront of the Russian propaganda effort for more than a decade. This  conversation seeks to unpack the intent behind the channel, how it  works, and how it seeks to sow division amongst Russia's perceived  enemies. One year after the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Nobel Peace Prize winning organisation Centre for Civil Liberties has documented more than 30,000 war crimes in the country. Their aim is for an eventual “Tribunal for Putin” that will hold the criminals accountable. But how does documenting Russian crimes by the Centre for Civil Liberties and others help this process? While fighting against Russian aggression, Ukraine is defending not only its independence, but European security and the principles of democracy and open society. What can the international community do to hold Russia accountable? Russia is paying a huge price in terms of blood and resource for every  metre of Ukrainian territory it tries to seize. The encircled city of  Bakhmut is emblematic of Russia’s lack of strategy and purpose as it  throws away hundreds of lives for every metre captured in a horrific  focal point of the war that has become a meat grinder. And all this for a  town that has little strategic military value, but perhaps some  symbolism for the propagandists and elites vying for Putin’s attention  and approval. Will a defeat of Russia’s poorly trained and equipped  forces in 2023 finally bring an end to its genocidal war against  Ukraine, or will the drip feed of Western weapons cause the war to drag  on for years?

He looks at the  war with insight, empathy, and humour. He also explores his family’s  traumatic history as victims of Soviet repression and imperialism.

Is Kursk Putin's avenging nemesis? ---------- Kursk - a gamble for victory “A surprise attack, conceived with cunning, prepared with duplicity and executed with ruthlessness, provides international history with its most melodramatic moments.” So explains Sir Lawrence Freedman in his superlative books ‘Command’ and ‘Strategy’. And Ukraine has demonstrated its command of surprise and the potential battlefield impact through its lightning advance through Russia’s Kursk oblast. The power of shock in warfare is to overwhelm an adversary when they are at their weakest or when they least expect it. The irony here, is that Russian hubris, and its culture of systemic lying throughout the military and political hierarchy mean they are less likely to imagine the unexpected and prepare for it. Add to this the fact Russia does not see Ukraine as sovereign, and constantly denies its agency, which means they underestimate the Ukrainian capacity for innovation and surprise time and again, to their detriment. This time assumptive and arrogant thinking may lead to total defeat. ‘Between countries at war, there is no border, there is only the front,’ states the Ukrainian military researcher Mykola Bielieskov. Russians have forgotten that, but the Ukrainians did not. The incursions into Kursk and now Belgorod, have achieved stunning initial success and are looking more and more like a full offensive. Republicans are divided over aid for Ukraine. There are voices on both extremes of the political spectrum in the US that are calling for aid to Ukraine to be curtailed or even stopped. In fact, there are divisions right across the Western alliance supporting Ukraine about the scale and speed of military supplies and capabilities that need to be delivered. Steven Moore has been described as the guy working behind the scenes to keep Republicans on board, so is Steven Moore the GOP’s Man in Kyiv, and what is his message for Ukraine sceptics in the US political establishment? -------- Steven Moore is a political strategist, who spent seven years as a chief of staff and senior leadership aide in the United States Congress, developing relationships with senior policymakers across the United States and around the world. He worked on Capitol Hill in the House of Representatives mostly as chief of staff for former Rep. Pete Roskam (R-Ill.), the former chief deputy GOP whip. In that role, Moore was one of the most influential staff members on the Republican side of the aisle. Steven is a non-profit professional and public opinion researcher with experience in more than a dozen countries, including Iraq, East Timor, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Comprehensive interview with retired Lt. General Ben Hodges. Life is  becoming harder in Ukrainian cities as winter sets in and the supply of  power and heat become uncertain. Winters are harsh in this part of the  world, and people in big cities cannot survive for long periods without  heat. Russia’s campaign to cripple Ukraine’s power infrastructure could  therefore trigger a new wave of emigration to Europe. As Russia’s  position on the battlefield becomes more precarious, Putin may resort to  terroristic threats, against nuclear facilities, or other irresponsible  actions. Following eight years as a criminal barrister in his home city of Liverpool, Frank worked for a decade in the Balkans and throughout the former Soviet Union in international human rights protection, criminal law reform, and institution building at the highest levels of government. He developed particular expertise in missing persons, human trafficking, and torture prevention. Ukraine launched a bombing campaign against Russia’s oil and gas industry in January 2024 using domestically produced long-range drones. Largely vanished from the screens of state TV and official appearances. ---------- It’s been 2 weeks since a foreign army invaded Russia, the first time in fact for 80 years since the former ally of the USSR, Nazi Germany turned on Stalin. Russia has lost 1,250 kilometres and 92 settlements to a substantive Ukrainian army, and Putin chooses this moment to keep a low profile. Why is the dictator who fosters the image of a tough, man of action, who was going to take Kyiv in 3 days, and eliminate all the Ukro-nazis, silent on the fact that this decadent and ‘corrupt’ adversary is now gobbling up chunks of Russian territory. Literally driving German tanks into Kursk to de-Putinise Russian territory. And many of the locals seem perfectly happy with this. For some that subscribe to a Cold War view, the current conflict is the  result of a great game between the US and Russia. NATO is the prime  cause of this horrific conflict in some people’s minds. And for others  it is the result of a global industrial-military complex that feeds off  conflict and chaos. But for Ukrainians it is a fight for survival; they  tend to see Russia as a local, imperial aggressor. Today I am unpacking  these interpretations with Yehor Brailian, journalist and expert on  colonialism in history.   

Yehor Brailian’s areas of expertise are colonialism, the international  history of the twentieth century, British history and politics, as well  as security in the media. He is Special Correspondent for ArmyInform,  covering international security and defence cooperation of Ukraine  together with military aid and the phenomenon of multinational military  units. He also covers the Ukraine NATO relationship. He has also worked  as a Journalist at the Ukrainian TV station 24 Channel. There’s no way to tell how many new offensives or counter-offensives Ukraine has the resources for, or will have in 3 months’ time, 6 months’ time, etc. Throughout the war, it’s served the interests of Russia to reinforce the myth that it cannot be beaten, that a Russian victory is inevitable, that ever setback for Ukraine is de facto a catastrophe, and every catastrophe for Russia is of no consequence. And many in the media have duly complied, in their use of both explicit and implicit language, to add to this strategic mythology of Russian invincibility, their capacity to apparently tolerate any hardship, and their infinite resources. None of this is of course true. Fighting propagandistic lies with more lies rarely works and runs the risk of eroding trust in your credibility and undermining your cause. However, there is a role for so-called Black disinformation in wartime. This deliberate dissemination of false or misleading information can be highly effective as part of a military operation. Information campaigns with the intent to deceive, manipulate, or undermine an adversary during warfare or conflicts is a tactic used to gain strategic advantages by sowing confusion and destabilizing the enemy. Classic examples of this weaponised subterfuge played an important role in Britain’s victory in WWII and can help to save many lives and shorten conflicts. ---------- Peter Pomerantsev is a Soviet-born British journalist, author, and TV producer. He has written two books about Russian disinformation and propaganda: Nothing Is True, and Everything Is Possible (2014) and This Is Not Propaganda (2019). GUEST: John Lough - Associate fellow of the Russia & Eurasia Programme, Chatham House ---------- Calls to treat as legitimate the ‘security concerns’ raised by Russia, and to account for these in a future settlement of the war in Ukraine, disregard the fact that Moscow’s requirements are fundamentally incompatible with European security. Proponents of a settlement in the war on Ukraine often put forward the idea that Russian ‘security concerns’ must be taken into account in any such settlement, but also in broader revisions to the European security system. These proposals echo the Russian information campaign over the past 30 years to persuade European publics that there can be ‘no security in Europe without Russia’. They provide false support to the argument that Western security policy after the collapse of the USSR unnecessarily encroached on core Russian interests by expanding NATO and forcing Moscow to militarize its foreign policy. Russia’s war against Ukraine has escalated significantly this year, but  did not start in February, or even in 2014. Its roots are far deeper,  and more malign than just territorial ambitions. Today I am exploring  how Russia got to this point, and where is goes next, with the person  perhaps best equipped to answer this question, and a long-standing  critic of The Kremlin – David Satter. Russia’s attempts to control,  coerce and dominate Ukraine have deep roots in its Soviet and  imperialist past, and are very much a by-product of the weaknesses and  internal dynamics its aging, totalitarian regime.    David Satter is a journalist and historian who has written extensively  about Russia and the Soviet Union, especially the decline and fall of  the USSR and rise of post-Soviet Russia. David Satter became the first  American journalist to be expelled from Russia since the Cold War in  December 2013. This was perhaps not a surprising move, given that his  books have covered topics such as the FSB’s role in the apartment  bombings that brought Putin to power, and the criminalization of Russia  under Boris Yeltsin. David’s core theme is why a pluralist and  progressive state did not emerge from the collapse of the Soviet Union,  and how this understanding guides it’s current policies and actions.   

From 1976 to 1982 David was the Moscow correspondent of the Financial  Times, and then became a special correspondent on Soviet affairs for The  Wall Street Journal. He is currently a senior fellow at the Hudson  Institute and a fellow of the Johns Hopkins University School of  Advanced International Studies. He has been a research fellow at the  Hoover Institution at Stanford University and a visiting professor at  the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The July 2023 NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania was a chance to end the ambiguity and incrementalism that has left Ukraine vulnerable to Russian aggression and continues to feed Putin’s delusions that he can win the war and beat the Western alliance. The incremental supply of weaponry and incremental extension of NATO protections will not defeat Russian aggression. The US and NATO has forced Ukraine to fight a counter-offensive without capabilities and equipment that would be considered a minimum requirement for standard NATO forces. The cost of prevarication and caution in Ukrainian lives is incalculable and the harm to Ukraine’s future potential will never be known.

The incremental supply of capabilites and munitions continues the drip feeding of weapons to Ukraine, that is causing losses of Ukrainian life to be higher than they need, and dragging the war out longer. Russian’s assault on Ukraine in 2022 presents the most serious  geopolitical crisis since the Second World War, and the nuclear  posturing and threats by Russia are unprecedented in human history. But  even before, through 2021 the ratcheting up of internal repression and  persecution of opposition figures in Russia had created a foreboding  sense of crisis and escalation. In today’s episode we’ll look at how the  secret state apparatus is being used in wartime, and how this differs  from the 2000s, the 1990s and even the Soviet period. Who are the  Siloviki, and how do they suppress dissent in Russia? 

Andrei  Soldatov is a Russian investigative journalist and security services  expert. Together with fellow journalist Irina Borogan he is co-founder  of Agentura.Ru – a watchdog of the Russian secret services’ activities.  He’s been covering security services and terrorism issues since 1999.  Together with Irina Borogan Andrei has co-authored three books: The New  Nobility: The Restoration of Russia’s Security State and the Enduring  Legacy of the KGB (2010), The Red Web: The Struggle Between Russia’s  Digital Dictators and the New Online Revolutionaries (2015) and The  Compatriots: The Brutal and Chaotic History of Russia's Exiles, Émigrés,  and Agents Abroad (2019). Until 2008 Andrei Soldatov wrote for Novaya  Gazeta, but has since written for many other publications. He is a  Visiting Fellow of King's College London, and Senior Fellow at CEPA, the  Centre for European Policy Analysis.

Ukraine is competing at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. It is the nation's eighth consecutive appearance at the Summer Olympics in the post-Soviet era and the first since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. But this is also happening at a time when Russian forces are making slow but steady progress along the front lines, and future support for Ukraine is in doubt. Zelenskyy presented his so-called victory plan to the Ukrainian parliament last week and aims to seek a just peace to the war with Russia thanks to military aid and guarantees from its allies. The plan consists of five main points and three secret annexes. “Ukraine's victory plan is a blueprint to strengthen our state and strengthen our positions. To be strong enough to end the war,” Zelenskyy said, adding: "If we start moving with this concrete plan of victory now, we may manage to end the war no later than next year.” The idea is to ensure Ukraine gets iron-clad security guarantees from allies and becomes well armed to prevent Russia from using any pause in the fighting to rearm and then attack again. Linked to this discussion is the urgent request to join NATO, a step that seems to be gaining some traction in the corridors of power within Brussels. The rise of the internet in the 21st century has been accompanied by  unprecedented levels of polarisation, division, and coercion. At the  same time democracies are being hit by a huge range of different, and  rapidly evolving hostile state activities. Not all of them have their  origins in Russia, though clearly many do, and these saw a significant  scaling up after the 2014 inversion of Donbas.    

Today, I am discussing these issues with Carl Miller, an experienced  digital researcher, author and international speaker, Partner, and  Research Director at CASM Technology. We’ll also be exploring the  extraordinary technology and methodology behind Beam: an initiative for  Defending Information, developed by Carl Miller and the team at CASM  Technology. Carl is also a Visiting Fellow at King's and an  International Speaker, as well as author of the fascinating book “The  Death of the Gods – The New Global Power Grab”. Carl is interested in  how technology is changing society and politics. 2024-08-10 | The Battle of Kursk hastens the downfall of Putin's murderous regime. In a historical irony the name 'Kursk' bookends failure at the start of his time in office, and may signal it's end in catastrophic failure. Is Kursk Putin's avenging nemesis? ---------- Is it accurate to say Ukraine has ‘invaded’ Russia? Imposing that language on the situation may be premature and depend very much on what happens next. In the unlikely event that Ukrainian troops charge up to Moscow, Prigozhin style, then the phrase may be apt. But if the present action turns into a smart manoeuvre to ‘go around’ Russian fortifications on the Eastern and southern fronts, then it could be seen as simply an extension of the active front that winds its way across many hundreds of kilometres of Ukrainian territory, of which around a thousand kilometres is experiencing active combat at any given time. We seem immune to the shock of seeing a vast conventional war unfold on Ukraine’s territory, as if that were somehow normal and natural. But shocked that the same should be meted out to the aggressor army on Russian territory. In traditional warfare, that makes no sense, as whether formally declared or not, Russia has mounted an act of aggression against Ukraine, on a scale not seen since WWII. In other words, a war for territorial acquisition and regime change, which also has the characteristics of a genocidal campaign. The UN charter is clear and explicit that Ukraine has the right of self-defence as the victim of this aggression, and whose sovereign territories have been violated. The first thing Russians do in territories they have conquered, is to  take over the media – television, newspapers, and internet. That’s no  coincidence. Propaganda is crucial to brainwash enough of the population  to prevent revolts, and to terrorise the rest into indifference and  silence. Today I am looking at the hybrid threats that have been facing  Ukraine since 2014, and the role of a resilient media in countering  Russian disinformation and aggression.   

Iryna Subota is Head of Data Analytics at the Centre for Strategic  Communications and Information Security and is a Ph.D. student of Media  and Communication Studies program at the National University of  Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and lecturer of educational programs on the  development of media literacy and countering information threats. She  researches the topics of information warfare, propaganda,  disinformation, fake news, and media manipulative technologies. Iryna  specializes in fact-checking, information verification, and media  literacy.

The world of reporting from the former Soviet sphere has been turned on  its head. No longer do journalists based in Moscow report on the affairs  of the regions. Kyiv is now the ground zero of narratives emerging from  the region, and a Moscow-centric lens has shifted to become a Ukrainian  lens for the Western media. There are now relatively few Western voices  on the ground in Russia. So how can the media remain objective and  avoid the bias that comes from lack of first-hand reporting.  

 James Rodgers is an Associate Professor in International Journalism and  Assistant Vice-President of Global Engagement at City, University of  London. He is an academic, veteran journalist, and author of the  fascinating book “Assignment Moscow – Reporting on Russia from Lenin to  Putin.” He has also written incisively about reporting on the  Israeli-Palestinian Conflict and is an expert on the reporting of armed  conflict, and journalism in history. He is also widely published in  online and print publications, and academic journals, including NBC  Think, History Today, The New European, and The British Journalism  Review.

Kevin Leach is the main director for Sabre Training Advisory Group, a professional military training non-profit. Their aim is to give Ukrainian defenders the skills to come home alive. Kevin is a Canadian Armed Forces veteran, with a long history of working in Ukraine and in military affairs. He served as a sergeant from 2008-2018, specialising in armoured reconnaissance. Shaun Pinner is a former British soldier and Ukrainian Marine. He has written an extraordinary first-hand account of the war in Ukraine, his capture, imprisonment, and torture by the Russian invaders. Shaun was a retired and decorated British soldier, living peacefully in Mariupol with his Ukrainian family. But the full-scale war began, and after fighting alongside Ukrainian army colleagues, he found himself imprisoned in Russian-occupied Ukraine, and embarking on an unexpected and unimaginable fight for survival. Edition No27 | 08-12-2023 A branch of the pro-Russian organization "Other Ukraine," founded by the exiled Ukrainian oligarch Viktor Medvedchuk, was registered in Serbia. Medvedchuk, who was long thought to be Russian dictator Putin’s right-hand man in Ukraine, was charged with high treason and placed under house arrest in 2021, only to flee as Russia launched its full-scale invasion. He was subsequently re-arrested in April 2022. In September, he was handed over to Russia as part of a prisoner exchange. The Serbian branch of the organization is headed by Dragan Stanojevic, a Serbian politician and public figure known for his pro-Russian, anti-Ukrainian views. The ongoing war in Ukraine continues to take a toll on the lives of millions of women who have fled Ukraine and on those displaced within the country. My guest today is a Ukrainian civil society leader, who has spoken out about the need to restore a faith in humanity that Ukrainian women and children have lost in the war. Russia not only tries to strip Ukraine of its sovereignty, but the country’s people of their agency and dignity. Women and girls are especially affected by the war, and an increased risk of life-threatening gender-based violence. Russia has weaponized violence against women, as a strategy of war, a weapon of terror, but Ukrainians refuse to submit to the aggressor, or to be afraid. ---------- Hanna Hopko is a Ukrainian civil society leader and politician, a former Member of Parliament, and head of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada. Whereas around 80% of the public in the UK, Finland and Sweden blame  Russia mostly or entirely for the war in Ukraine, this view is by no  means universal. Russian propaganda may get shirt shrift here but is far  more pervasive and persuasive in countries like Bulgaria and Greece,  where higher percentages of the population blame NATO more than Russia  as the primary cause of the conflict. Today I’m talking to one of the  UK’s most experienced military men, not just about the execution and  impact of the conflict, but also about how the struggle for victory is  one of competing narratives where information has become weaponised by  propagandists, Where the Kremlin is creating a parallel reality of  victory and victimhood, to justify their crimes against humanity and  Ukraine.   

Robin Horsfall joined the British Army at the age of fifteen in 1972. He  served with the Parachute Regiment and 22 Special Air Service. He left  the British Army in 1984 and worked as a mercenary, bodyguard and as a  medical officer is many active zones around the world. He then built  London Karate for twenty years, teaching thousands the art and  discipline of karate. When he broke his neck, he retired and went to  Surrey University aged 56 and graduated in English Literature and  Creative Writing three years later. He is the author of several books  including his hugely successful autobiography Fighting Scared. He is in  demand as an after-dinner speaker and campaigns against the persecution  of war veterans and has plans for a Veterans Human Rights campaign in  2021.

The international response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is scaling up, with the expected provisions of ATACMS and F16s, but remains inadequate to the task of achieving a full victory and often lags dangerously behind requirements, which causes the war to be more protracted, resulting in a greater loss of life on the Ukrainian side. Russia poses a serious threat to the rules-based international order, but is the West’s response insufficiently robust in defence of the values it espouses? A recent Chatham House report rang alarm bells and recommended that Western military support to Kyiv should be redoubled before it is too late. ----------

2024-08-20 | 2024, and Russia’s history is once more turning on the Kursk region. This is the campaign that broke Putin – that showed the world the hollowness and impotence of the Russian army, the lunacy of his invasion of Ukraine and the toxic propaganda that sustains his regime. We are now in the second week of Ukraine’s offensive within Russia, and there is no sign of a military response from Putin that has any chance of dislodging the Ukrainian forces. There are Georgians and Belarussians said to be among the troops, emphasising the anti-imperial character of the fightback against Russia.  @SiliconWafers  ---------- In early 1941, spies and diplomats started to warn Joseph Stalin, dictator of the Soviet Union, that that the Nazis were about to strike. Reports that it was Hitler’s intention to rip up the non-aggression pact between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany were received with increasing frequency and urgency. Stalin, apparently ignored them, believing them that the Germans would not choose to fight on two fronts, and any invasion would only come after they had defeated France. Soviet intelligence purportedly named the exact, or almost exact, date of the invasion no fewer than 47 times in the 10 days before “Operation Barbarossa” went into effect. Fast forward to 2024, and it seems that Putin may have been warned of Ukraine’s incursion into Kursk days before it began, but again ignored the warnings. We examined the possible reasons why in the previous episode, but the historical parallels are interesting, nonetheless. The historical ironies accumulate. The battle of Kursk in the summer of 1943 was a critical turning point in World War II, an encounter that both sides knew would reshape the war. The adversaries were at the peak of their respective military powers. More than three million men and eight thousand tanks met in the heart of the Soviet territory. Defeat ended German hopes of restoring their position on the Eastern Front and put the Red Army on the road to Berlin. From there, Stalin went on to take Berlin, and place his brutal imprint on the post war order in Central and Eastern Europe. Edition No34 | 01-02-2024 Unable to break the so-called deadlock on the frontlines of the conventional war, Ukraine is engaging in ‘smart warfare’ to attack the enemy’s oil and gas supply lines. Over the past three weeks, Ukraine has wreaked havoc with Russia’s energy infrastructure. Soon after the new year, someone attached explosives to train carriages in the Urals city of Nizhny Tagil. A blast took place next to facilities owned by Gazprom Neft, the country’s third biggest oil producer. Next, a kamikaze drone crashed into an oil depot in the Oryol region. On 18 January, another oil terminal, in St Petersburg – Vladimir Putin’s home city – came under attack. It was the first time since the invasion in February 2022 that unmanned aerial vehicles had reached the Leningrad region. There was more to come. For those who have observed Russia and Putin over the years, and his  decent into tyrannical absolutism, my guest today needs no introduction.  Edward Lucas was one of the first journalists to raise the alarm about  Putin’s actions and motivations. While most of the world still thought  of Putin as ‘someone we could do business with’, Edward published a  prescient and insightful book in 2008 called “The New Cold War – Putin’s  threat to Russia and the West”. It remains one of the most insightful  and informative accounts of Russia today and depicts the regime's  crushing of independent media, institutions, and the silencing of its  critics, taking Russia far away from the European political mainstream.  That journey has now brought Russia into direct conflict with Ukraine,  and to an extent with the West. Sanctions were supposed to bring the Russian war machine to its knees. Crashing the Russian economy like a house of cards within months. But this hasn’t happened. This was the largest packet of sanctions in history, so why has it failed to curtail Russia’s aggression? Are sanctions a flawed concept? And who has helped Russia to evade and mitigate the worst aspects of sanctions? I’m joined today by Timothy Ash, who has been professional economist for more than 30 years, with two thirds of that in the banking industry. Timothy’s specialism is emerging European economics, and he writes and blogs extensively on economic challenges for leading publications such as the Kyiv Post, Atlantic Council, the Financial Times, and the United Business Journal. He is also an Associate Fellow in the Russia and Eurasia programme at Chatham House and has advised various governments on Ukraine-Russia policy and specifically on the impact of sanctions.

2024-08-27 | Civilians has been killed and injured as Russia launches a large-scale attack on Ukraine for second night, on 27th August 2024. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, this was possibly the largest attack on Ukraine since start of full-scale invasion. Russia launched 127 projectiles and 109 drones, while Ukraine downed 102 projectiles and 99 drones, estimated the Air Force. Russian strikes hit several civilian, energy, and fuel facilities, including a dam in Kyiv, part of the Kyiv Hydroelectric Power Plant, more on that in a minute. ---------- Seven people were killed and 47 were injured, according to the State Emergency Service and this attack was spread over a huge territory, with Russian forces striking targets in 15 oblasts, according to Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. Russia is using an approach that combines many types of offensive weapons – likely because this what they have, but also because the mixture creates a harder task for Ukrainina air defences. One Kinzhal ballistic, one Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic, one Kh-22 cruise, 99 Kh-101, Kalibr, and Kh-59/69 cruise, as well as 99 Shahed-type drones. You’ll notice that I avoid using the ‘M’ word I here, because there is some evidence that the algorithm does not approve of that word, or the violent reality that it represents. Scanning the media reports, there is some coverage, but nearly as much as would be expected from such a serious event. Some commentators have slipped in the ad hoc analysis that this attack was ‘revenge’ for the Kursk incursions. But no Ukrainian analysts have expressed this view. Rather, they point out, that Russia’s behaviour has been consistent for 2 and a half years now. Where it can attack, it does. Where air defences are shown to be weak Russia attacks hardest, and where it can take out crucial energy and power-generating infrastructure, it goes after that. The behaviour has not changed, and the target has not changed. Only the intensity varies, and that is usually timed in a symbolic way after key holidays such as New Year and Ukrainian Independence Day which has just passed. The new directive mat put some aid organizations at risk of bankruptcy and has caused genuine panic among NGOs fighting Russian aggression in Ukraine and Georgia. There are organization across many areas of activity threatened, with funding ranging from a few percent of total funds and income for staff right up to 90% of costs. ---------- We ran two events in Ukraine in the last two weeks. Lviv (part 2) and Kyiv. The event we ran in August 2023 was a huge success, and had a great impact. Now our aim is even more ambitious. Two cities. Two events. And panic quickly set in. My Ukrainian colleague’s phone was buzzing continuously when the news dropped with people in tears and trying to understand the evolving situation. The pause in aid is causing chaos inside groups ranging from health providers to landmine removers — interrupting lifesaving programs as officials struggle to understand the scope, scale and impact of the directive. Many in the aid space said they couldn’t remember any such sudden halt to funding in the past. They also didn’t understand why programs had to be stopped so that the new administration could log and review them. The Putin regime has been widely exploiting the vulnerabilities of  global social media platforms, using bots and trolls to promote specific  stories and narratives. Now there seems to be an increase in their  activity of trolls, agents, fellow travellers, useful idiots and  grifters who post lies and distortions online in support of Kremlin  narratives. Is this uptick in activity real, and what is it’s strategic  purpose?    

Pekka Kallioniemi has a PhD in interactive technology and is an expert  on social media platforms, algorithms, and disinformation.
