15 Jun 2017Ep 54: How Plus Size Designer Monif C. Redefined the Fashion Industry01:02:25
Today in the guest chair, we have a woman who has literally redefined the fashion industry. Her name is Monif Clarke, and she is the Founder of Monif C.

Monif C. is a fashion forward, plus-size designer brand specializing in clothing and swimsuits for women sizes 14 - 24.  Monif had no prior design experience, but grew frustrated with the lack of trendy plus size clothing and  n 2005, teamed up with her mother to bring Monif C to life.

Monif’s story is the perfect example of not letting one person’s no discourage you from continuing on your journey. In fact, Monif received a lot of No’s on the way to success, often being told that her designs were too sexy and that “plus-size women preferred not show off their bodies." But Monif refused to take No for an answer. Today, Monif C. is sold not only on MonifC.com, but in Asos.com, Forever21.com, as well as specialty boutiques throughout the US, London, Canada, and Australia just to name a few. In September 2017, Monif C. will celebrate 12 years serving plus size women.

On today’s episode, Monif gets into:

  • How she funded the business in the early days, before she was profitable
  • That time she wouldn’t let Jill Scott have Monif C clothing for free
  • Why press doesn’t automatically equal sales
  • The investments she makes in her business
  • Plus how she’s continuing to grow her brand

31 Aug 2022315: How Jerri Evans Is Evolving From Turning Natural Juice Bar Owner To Legacy Builder00:53:39

Today in the guest chair is Jerri Evans, the Owner of Turning Natural Juice Bars. Jerri was first on the show in 2017 and now she’s back with an update!

As the Owner of Turning Natural Juice Bars, Jerri Evans has revolutionized juicing in the “hood”.  By bringing better choices to communities that otherwise lack access to healthy options, Jerri dedicated her mission to serving the often under-served and overlooked.

It was Evans’ late mother Annette Turner, who founded Turning Natural, after being diagnosed with Stage II Breast Cancer. Shortly after her mother’s transition, Evans quit her then excelling career as an Aeronautical Engineer to pursue helping those who were looking to take care of themselves.

Eight years and six locations later, Jerri has committed to continuing her mom’s legacy and trailblazing her own.

On this episode, hear how Jerri:

  • Thinks about how and when to expand to a new location
  • Addressed her shortcomings as a manager to make her team stronger
  • Navigates “graduating” from a business she founded and having an exit strategy!

13 Sep 2017Ep 61: Meet the Black Harvard Grads Flipping the Script On Beauty Norms00:41:58
This week on the show I have KJ Miller & Amanda Johnson. KJ and Amanda are graduates of Harvard Business School and the co-founders of Mented Cosmetics (short for pigmented). These two women are making their mark on the beauty industry, redefining what a natural, clean beauty look is for women of color. Mented is an upscale beauty brand for all women of color who are looking for great nude and neutral looks. These two figured out the one thing the industry had forgotten to do and now have a thriving beauty company.

On this episode, KJ & Amanda share:
  • How they learned to make beauty products
  • Their early mistakes when starting the brand

17 Mar 2021242: Photographer Danielle Finney Uses Natural Light to Bring Out Natural Beauty With Every Click00:51:29

If you take a look at Danielle Finney’s body of work, you’ll see two common themes: warm expressions and joyful faces. Her signature style as a natural light photographer has connected her to clients and taken her places she never could have imagined.

Danielle originally began her professional career on the administrative track with aspirations to be an executive assistant because she had a desire to help people. And one thing’s for sure, she never saw herself doing photography full-time, even though she had taken a liking to it over time. It was just a side hustle.

Initially, her work was experimental and friends and family-centric — reaching out to them, trying new things, and learning by trial and error. And even after about four years of developing her creative eye, gaining clientele and finding her photography style, Danielle still didn’t see what she was doing as a “profitable means of making a living.”

That was, until life gave her a reason to put herself out there and believe in herself.

And the rest is history! Now, after 13 years in the photography arena, she helps women see themselves in their best light through beautiful, joy-filled photos. As well as, teaches other photographers how to improve their natural light portraits and enhance their client experiences.

03 Sep 2020216: Partake Foods Founder Denise Woodard Was Rejected by 86 Investors Before Getting A Yes From Jay-Z (REWIND)00:45:30

If you’ve watched the “Entrepreneur” video by Pharrell & Jay-Z, then you may recognize Denise Woodard’s face. That’s because her story of being rejected by 86 investors before getting that one yes from Jay-Z is highlighted in the video. Well, we actually spoke to Denise last year as she was embarking on this process.

So it made my heart swell with pride to see this Side Hustle Pro alum thriving and scaling her business.

Denise has always had her hands on a winning idea. Partake Foods provides meals and snacks that are delicious, safe, and nutritious for conscious eaters. They are free of gluten, the top 8 allergens, and artificial ingredients. What started as a way for this concerned mom to give her daughter snacks that would not trigger her allergies, has evolved into a brand that’s sold in major retailers.

In this rewind episode of Side Hustle Pro, meet Denise, the founder behind this amazing brand, and hear:

  • Why she’s so passionate about gluten and allergen-free food and how she actually got started
  • How she, a non-baker, was able to start a cookie and snack brand
  • The pivotal point when she made the decision to leave Coke to pursue Partake full time, and so much more

04 Nov 2020224: How The Founder Of BOOMBOX Boxing Club Is Navigating Owning A Fitness Business During Covid00:45:58

It’s not often that you hear about two co-founders meeting on Tinder. But that’s actually the business origin story of this week’s Side Hustle Pro guest, Angela Jennings of BOOMBOX Boxing Club.

BOOMBOX is a boxing-inspired, hip-hop-fueled fitness studio.

A finance professional at a global accounting firm by day, Angela always knew she wanted to tap into her interest in food or fitness.

After being introduced to boxing three years ago by Tinder match and co-founder, Reggie Smith, Angela became passionate about the sport's potential to be a fun and powerful workout to people of all fitness levels and backgrounds.

The pair launched their first studio in Washington, DC in 2019 and it's now host to members who sweat through themed boxing workouts or private training with coaches.

In this episode, I really love what Angela had to share about:

  • Deciding on a location when each co-founder lives in a different city
  • Building buzz leading up to opening day
  • Navigating the fitness industry during covid and how they are working to adapt
  • How she’s doing this all while side hustling during a pandemic and so much more!

Today in the guest chair we have Kendra Barnes. At the time of this recording, Kendra was an Economist by day and Real Estate Investor by night.

Kendra is now a full-time Real Estate Investor and Founder of The Key Resource. Her real estate investments afforded her the ability to retire from the 9-5 life at the age of 32! She created The Key Resource to inspire, empower and educate people about the power of home ownership and Real Estate investment. She currently owns and manages 4 properties (8 rental units total).

Her key message to anyone looking to buy a home or a rental property is: “You don’t have hit the lottery or be left an inheritance to buy property. You can start with what you have right now. You are worthy of wealth.”

On today’s episode, we get into:

  • What inspired her to get into real estate
  • The mistakes she and her husband made when purchasing their first property
  • The risky move they took to make their down payment
  • The “house hacking” technique that allows you to save a huge amount on your down payment
  • And so much more!

04 Jan 2018Ep 77: How to Fear Less and Live Your Best Life in 201800:24:31

2017  was an amazing year for me (I got married, took my business to new heights, spent time with my family, was embraced into a new family and culture). I am so grateful for the lessons learned and blessings received.

Something I may have shared less of is that it was also an emotional year and sometimes a downright stressful year. I pushed myself harder than I ever have, took on more responsibility at work, was challenged in unexpected ways, grew a lot and took a major leap and quit my job.

Now, I enter 2018 with a new perspective and determination to do my best work and live my best life.

On today’s episode, I share:

  • How we can all adopt a fearless mindset
  • What it really means to invest in yourself
  • Why I’m committed to nurturing human connections

17 Jul 2019156: Side Hustle Spotlight: How this Nurse Started Her Natural Skincare Business on The Side (Aliyah Jenkins of Body Treats)00:51:50

Aliyah Jenkins is the Owner and Founder of Body Treats, LLC. Body Treats is an all-natural, organic, chemical and toxin-free skincare line that specializes in pastry inspired (scented) products. Body Treats uses only raw, organic butter, organic oils, and certified therapeutic essential oils.Working in the healthcare field for eight years as a Nurse Practitioner and Registered Nurse, Aliyah noticed a “Revolving Door” cycle with most of her patients.  They continued to come back to the hospital with the same health problems that they initially left with. Aliyah decided that it was time for a different approach and adopted a Holistic lifestyle herself which includes a plant-based diet, physical and mental exercise and the use of herbs as medicine.

While adopting this Holistic Lifestyle, Aliyah was in search of all-natural skincare products that particularly smelled like baked goods and was unsuccessful in finding it, so she decided to make it for herself, right in her kitchen. Through the advice of her sister, she decided to make her personal skincare products into a business.

20 May 2020201: I QUIT my Job! (REWIND)00:37:56

Some of you might not know that I was an MBA intern for a summer at Google when I was working towards my business degree at the University of Michigan. And usually, the summer before your second year in business school is when most people receive job offers from their temporary employer to come back after graduation and work full-time. But, plot twist, I didn’t receive an offer.

That rejection, eventually, led me on the path to side hustling. I side hustled for over a year and a half until I was able to quit my full-time job, and pursue Side Hustle Pro full time. In this episode, I get honest about how I went from rejection to running my own six-figure business. Let’s rewind the tape!

09 Sep 2021266: Side Hustle Success in 3 Steps REWIND00:29:21

In this rewind episode; you’ve already gotten the motivation you need to stop procrastinating and just go for it. We’ve even talked about pushing past the fear and doubts that might come from ourselves and others. So, this week, I want to tell you my 3-step process for taking action, making moves, and progressing on your side hustle.

It’s a tried and true formula that I’ve been using for the past five years. When I looked back on how I approached creating my podcast as a side hustle, and now, how I’m approaching creating my YouTube channel as a side hustle, I recognize that there are three things I always do.

In this episode, I’m sharing what those three things are.

I’m giving you real-world examples that I’m implementing right now, and that you can start working on too! If you’re diligent with these steps, they will work for you too. Remember, we are making moves by any means necessary in 2021.

As a busy working mom and wife, Chantel Powell found herself shuttling her son Kameron between summer basketball camp and football practice. Play Pits is a 100% all-natural deodorant for active kids. It’s free of aluminum, parabens, synthetic fragrances and other harsh chemicals. While it can be used on the most gentle skin types, it also packs a strong punch against odors.

  • In today’s episode, Chantel breaks down:
    • How she tested out Play Pits on family to get feedback
    • How customer demand led her to evolve from children’s deodorant to an adult deodorant component as well

24 Feb 2021238: How a “No” Pushed Marvina Robinson Into Creating Her Company, B. Stuyvesant Champagne00:42:06

Marvina Robinson is the founder and CEO of her own boutique brand champagne company, B. Stuyvesant Champagne that was launched in February 2020.

Her journey was anything but “ordinary.” She puts it this way: “There was no direct correlation.” With a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Master’s degree in Statistics, and the career path of working in finance on Wall Street for over 20 years, the entrepreneur bug hit her, big time. Prior to Stuyvesant (as it’s affectionately called), Marvina had her own indoor cycling studio, which she later converted into a café.

After the landlord of the building the café was hosted in wouldn’t allow her to sell beer or wine, she took his “no” as a lead to make her vision a reality, and open up a champagne bar. So she took the next lead, and ventured to France to make connections in the champagne and wine world.

While sitting down eating crepes in France at 5 a.m., she met someone who would help her make the introductions she needed to succeed, and the outcome of that is what you see today.

Although Marvina didn’t know what she was looking for, at first, and her business plan was in her brain, notebook and laptop, she’s proud that she built her business incrementally, and her “true business” is now falling into place. The insane grind included red eye flights between Manhattan and France for almost a year. For Marvina, it was all worth it.

Today, I’m happy to welcome into the guest chair, a woman who is changing lives in her community. Her name is Jerri Evans, and she is the Owner of Turning Natural Juice Bars.Growing up in SE Washington, D.C. she watched her mom and others struggle to find healthy options, while carry-outs and corner stores were readily available. Today on the show, we get into how she transformed a tragic life event into an impactful business that’s ensuring better health for underserved communities. She makes it a point to transform areas that historically do not have access to fresh produce and tries to eradicate food deserts (areas that do not have access to such healthy options). Now with catchy names like Swizz Beets, Green Latifah, and Mi’Kale Jackson, Jerri has initiated creative ways to invite customers to try out to cold-pressed juices they’ve never had. 18 Nov 2020226: How The Founder Of Grace Eleyae Went From Selling Products On Etsy To Selling One Of Oprah's Favorite Things00:49:11

Today in the guest chair we have Grace Eleyae, the Founder of Grace Eleyae Inc.

Grace Eleyae Inc. began with their now trademark product, the Original Slap, which stands for (Satin-Lined Cap)®. The Slap is a stylish cap that retains moisture (satin-lining), stays on your head at night (with its signature elastic band) and is fashionable enough to wear outside.

It all started in 2014 when Grace took a trip to Kenya that changed her life.

During a bumpy 8-hour car ride, all the hair on the back of her head broke off - the result of her chemically straightened hair and constant friction against the headrest. And the rest would be history.

Later that year, Grace started working on a solution to her completely damaged, broken and dry chemically straightened hair, and the first prototype of the Slap was created.

In this episode, Grace shares:

  • How a bumpy car ride and hair breakage led her to develop a prototype for her ideal cap
  • What happened after she created that prototype, including the reaction from her family
  • How and when she decided to start selling her products on Etsy
  • What made her decide to fully launch Grace Eleyae
  • What happened when she initially reached out to get beauty bloggers to review the Slap, and so much more

One thing that just happened, Grace Eleyae’s Foldover Satin Lined Beanie just made Oprah’s Favorite Things List for 2020!

Let’s find out all about the brand that Oprah and more are giving rave reviews.

17 Aug 2016Ep 11: From Unemployed to Award-Winning Financial Expert: Tiffany "The Budgetnista" Aliche01:04:33

In 2009, Tiffany “The Budgetnista” Aliche lost her job as a preschool teacher. Unable to afford her mortgage, she moved back home with her parents at age 29. At her lowest moment, she was 31 years old, with no job, no money, and no home of her own. After hitting rock bottom, she determined it was time to put the financial wisdom she had learned growing up to good use. In this week’s episode, she shares how she bounced back from financial despair to take charge of her own life and help others do the same. Along the way, she has built a hugely profitable brand and even more, an insanely loyal community of Dream Catchers devoted to her Live Richer principles.

Author of two #1 Amazon bestsellers, The One Week Budget and Live Richer Challenge, Tiffany The Budgetnista and her financial advice have also been featured in The New York Times, Reuters, US News and World Report, the TODAY show, PBS, Fox Business, MSNBC, CBS MoneyWatch, TIME, ESSENCE Magazine, and FORBES.

In this episode, Tiffany breaks down:

  1. The inspiration for The Budgetnista and when she realized she could package and sell her financial wisdom.
  2. How she transitioned from major debt and losing it all to starting her own business.
  3. How she developed and grew the Live Richer Challenge to be a profitable and sustainable business.
  4. How she has grown her private Facebook community to over 100K members.

This week we’re rewinding it back to when I sat down with Trina Small, the founder of Supermom Culture. After leaving her logistics job, growing her blog, and blowing up on social media, Trina took a leap to start her brand that empowers mothers through streetwear.

Starting off on her own packing orders with her daughter out of her apartment, Trina took risks and bet on herself to build a solid brand.

 In this episode she shares:

  • How she slowly and steadily scaled her business while supporting herself and her family

  • How she landed press like Good Morning America and Oprah Daily

  • The real challenges of being a solo entrepreneur

  • Plus so many laughs, this episode felt like chatting with a girlfriend!

07 Oct 2021270: How I’m Refocusing on my Business in this Quarter & What I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a Mom00:33:15

I became a mom in April 2020 and life has never been the same. I think becoming a mom in and of itself is hard anyway, but when you add in a global panorama? Let’s just say it’s been a bit spicy.

In this episode I’m sharing my mood for Q4 of 2021. It’s “me season,” and I’m ready to implement all the many ideas that I have been mapping out for the last year and a half!

Plus, I’m sharing the way Muoyo and I have divided up the juggle of full time parenting and full time careers (spoiler alert: it’s still a struggle!). I’m also sharing what I wish I knew about motherhood before I became a mom.

09 May 2018REWIND: From Drowning in Debt to Making 5 Figures A Month (Courtney Sanders of Think and Grow Chick)01:09:52

It’s Nicaila here with another special REWIND edition of Side Hustle Pro.

Take a listen to this best of episode with Courtney Sanders. This is one of my favorite episodes because Courtney is so thorough! She is an entrepreneur who started making money online by packaging her expertise in productivity systems and goal achievement and has impacted thousands of people.

But, even though she was starting to make 4 then 5 figures monthly in her business, she didn’t just quit her job. She planned it out, she was prepared and she really set a high standard for herself of what she needed to achieve before she would allow herself to quit.

So Courtney’s episode is one that I came back to many, many times in 2017. I would literally re-listen to it over and over again as I prepared to leave my job. 1) Because it was like talking to a life coach and 2) It was a reminder that I could not just quit impulsively and expect success, I needed to establish a plan.

In this this episode, Courtney breaks down:

  • The inspiration for Think And Grow Chick and when she realized she could help other women think and grow into their best selves
  • How she grew her company into a profitable business
  • How she juggles her side hustle with her full time job
  • Financial wisdom she has learned along the way
  • When she knew it was time to take her side hustle to the next level

26 Sep 2018Ep 111: How The Shade Room Founder Angelica Nwandu Launched A Media Company on Instagram00:55:00
Today in the guest chair is Angelica Nwandu. Angelica is the founder of The Shade Room, a media company that covers celebrity news and celebrates black culture. With over 14 million followers on Instagram alone, The Shade Room has become the it-destination for breaking national stories. Angelica herself was named as one of the Forbes "30 under 30" in 2016 and has created an empire that inspired Refinery 29 to dub her "the Oprah of our generation.”

Angelica, as you’ll hear on the episode, is someone who is so fascinating to me, because she didn’t have a blueprint. But her confidence is contagious. She may not have known for sure that what she would create would work, but something inside of her made her believe it would work. That’s the kind of confidence we all need to have.

On today’s episode, we’ll get into:

  • How Angelica got her start
  • How her foster care upbringing influenced her life’s path
  • And how she revolutionized celebrity news starting with a laptop, wifi, and an Instagram account

26 Aug 2021264: Just Do It! Don’t Procrastinate, Start Your Side Hustle This Year REWIND00:26:34

This week's episode is a rewind of the Side Hustle Pro Bootcamp Week 1.

For the next four weeks, you’ll have a chance to be a part of the Side Hustle Pro Bootcamp. Don’t worry, there are no pushups, workout plan, or anything of the sort, but what you will get a grasp of is how to break things down into super small achievable steps to actually achieve your side hustle dreams. This week’s episode is all about how to START.

No more procrastination. No more playing around. In 2021, we’re going to commit and do this! Besides, the hardest part of the battle is actually starting your side hustle, but after that, it gets easier. And to be honest, you’re probably stalling because of the drive to be perfect. Stalling and overthinking can create a hamster wheel effect that’s very hard to get out of, even when you know it’s counterproductive and not necessary. Instead of focusing on the wrong things, let’s focus on the right things.

I’m taking you through the journey of: saying “no” to your own stall tactics and saying “later” to your own excuses, all while giving you three tips to actually start your side hustle.

21 Feb 2018Ep 84: How Nubian Skin Founder Ade Hassan Redefined What Nude Means For Women of Color00:37:02

Today in the guest chair we have Ade Hassan. Ade is the founder and director of lingerie brand Nubian Skin. Frustrated by the lack of skin-tone choices to go with her ever-expanding wardrobe, Ade decided it was time for a different kind of nude. She knew that there were lots of women out there like her who needed the same thing. Nubian Skin has redefined what "nude" means, offering essentials in different colors with current pieces include bras, underwear, hosiery, and shoes.

When Ade set out to create skin-tone choices that actually matched her skin tone, she had no idea the level of interest she would generate. Today, celebrity-favorite Nubian Skin is stocked in leading stores such as Asos, Nordstroms and she even styled the Queen Bey herself, Beyoncé and dancers for the Formation World Tour as well as the cast of the blockbuster film Hidden Figures.

On today’s episode, Ade shares how she transitioned from a career in finance to creating an impactful and highly sought after brand.

Let me let you in on a little secret, I first started side hustling to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. It was not to turn my side hustle into a full time job. But, I also want to assure you, there’s nothing wrong with the latter, either. In today’s episode, I take it all the way back! We’re talking childhood with pit stops at my first internship, ever, with HBO, the days of wanting to be a broadcast journalist in college, the dreaded post-grad life, finding my way to business school, and eventually creating what you now know as Side Hustle Pro. It’s been quite a journey!

I delve a bit deeper than I have in the past, of how I went from a side hustler to making my podcast into a full-time business. I wanted to go into as much detail as possible so I could help and inspire someone else. Let’s remember, not all stories are linear, and that’s okay.

In the midst of my story, I also highlight Black women who have helped me at pivotal moments along the way. It’s because of these relationships and sisterhood that I am the woman I am today.

27 Sep 201763: How to Run Your Side Hustle in 1 Hour A Day00:24:42

Up until this year, the last quarter of every year always felt like the most stressful for me. This year is the first year that that's not the case for me. This year, I got better at getting things done, even under pressure. In this episode I’m sharing some of the biggest mistakes I made when I first started out side hustling and what I've learned from them.

It’s important that you understand where I and most successful side hustlers went wrong and what I did to turn it around.

These mistakes could have easily been avoided if I had only known how to create a realistic goals setting system. Now, I've mastered the "less talk, more hustle" approach, and it’s what has gotten me results.

I spend less time thinking and talking about what I'm going to do and more time actually doing it.

I learned to cut out all the fluff that makes you FEEL like you're doing something (to-do lists, buying fancy planners, well organized trello boards) and get down to business.

By making these mistakes, I also learned some key lessons as to why most side hustlers aren’t making the progress they anticipated. You’re probably not accomplishing your goal, because you bit off too much or not taking action because you want everything to be perfect and are afraid of making a mistake.

If you want more guidance on how to actually get things done, consider learning my signature Goal Getter Action Plan. I can show you how to run a side business in 7 hours per week.

In this episode, I break down how you can quit stalling and make moves on  your side hustle. Listen through to the end to get more info plus an early bird discount code to my signature Goal Getter Action Plan for just $27.

02 Oct 2019167: How Rochelle Porter Launched Her Apparel and Lifestyle Brand While Working Full-Time00:58:42

Today in the guest chair, we have Rochelle Porter, also known as the “Print Queen.” She is a designer who has never met a blank surface she didn’t want to draw on. But, she nearly abandoned the idea of being a designer when she learned of the unethical labors practice in the fast fashion industry. After learning this, she pursued a career in a variety of industries including investment banking and communications.

At her lowest moment, she found an eviction notice on the door. It was at that moment she knew something had to change, so she made the move back to Atlanta.

Slowly but surely, clues that she should look into fashion again started coming into her life and she took them as a sign to get moving.

She did her research and launched her lifestyle brand that specializes in responsibly made fashion and home decor all while holding down steady consulting gigs.

28 Sep 2016Ep 17: Mastering The Art Of The Cold Email00:14:12

On this episode, I'm sharing the art of reaching out to potential collaborators, customers and clients via the cold email. While many of many of my guests are people I know or have met, 50% of the women I interview on my podcast were complete strangers before I reached out to them via email. In this episode I’m sharing the art of writing enticing cold emails that get responses. Here are some of my key tips:

  1. Preparation
    1. Do your research - Google, social media
    2. Consider what’s in it for them
    3. Eliminate words like, “pick your brain” from your vocabulary
    1. Keep a Google doc with your email templates and tweak for each individual outreach
    2. Revise as you learn what works
  2. Start a Template Document
    1. Make sure every person you reach out to knows why you appreciate their work and the value  the collab would bring
    2. Be prepared to GIVE before you get
    3. Make it EASY for them to collaborate. Propose dates and times (hello, Calendly!) and offer to work around their schedule.
  3. The outreach

If you want my exact email templates that I’ve used to reach out to the likes of Luvvie and Courtney Sanders of Think and Grow Chick, sign up for my email list at sidehustlepro.co/sidehustlecorner.

10 Jul 2019155: Entrepreneur-In-Residence: This Data Scientist Just Launched A Cutting-Edge Home Laser for Black and Brown Skin (w/Lisa Pegram of Belle51)00:53:45

Meet our new Entrepreneur-In-Residence! Those of you who are longtime listeners may remember that at the beginning of Side Hustle Pro, we had an Entrepreneur-In-Residence by the name of Meiko Drew and we followed her journey for an entire year.

Well, today we are bringing back the Entrepreneur-in-Residence feature. That’s right, starting with this episode, we are going to chronicle the life of an emerging entrepreneur as she launches and scales her business.

This woman happens to be a dear friend of mine, in fact, my best friend since high school, and her name is Lisa Pegram. Now, if it were up to me, I would have had her in the chair a long time ago, but she prefers to grind behind the scenes. But I think she is so dope, and such a hustler, I finally convinced her to do it.

Listen to hear:

  • How she used her education and jobs to develop ideas for several different side hustles
  • The research process she used to launch her cutting edge beauty product
  • Why she uses analytics to drive business decisions

10 Jan 2018Ep 78: Nicole Walters Wants To Teach You To Add More Commas To Your Bank Account00:46:45

Today in the guest chair, we have Nicole Walters.

By age 28, Nicole was a highly-paid executive at a Fortune 500 company, managing multibillion dollar accounts. But something just wasn’t right. She felt like her job was paying the bills and feeding her family, but not her soul.

So, live on Periscope, Nicole quit her corporate job to focus on opening her own private business and product development consulting firm, The Monetized Life. Through her programs and consulting, she shares her secrets to earning “passive income” with other entrepreneurs, including in her popular online course, 1K1Day.

Nicole has been on my radar for some time and I thought what better way to kick off 2018, than with a woman who is pushing the boundaries of entrepreneurship and redefining what it means to package your skills into services and make money on your own terms.

As Nicole says, she teaches people how to add commas to their bank accounts and learn that they don’t have to trade time for money.

On today’s episode, Nicole gets into:

  • Her 5 years of (debt free!) side hustling before quitting
  • Why she quit her job LIVE on Periscope
  • Generating $11,000 from a $12.99 product
  • The streams of income in her business

25 Nov 2020227: Behind the Hustle: Real-Life Baby Updates, Breastfeeding, and Running a Business00:44:14

Honesty is the new mantra for me. I’m bringing you the real in this week’s episode. Trust me, I’m not holding back with this Behind the Hustle update. I wasn’t emotionally ready to discuss everything yet, but I felt like there is no discussing my personal experience of juggling being a new mom, and having my own business without sharing a bit about what I’ve been going through.

If you’re ready for it, I’m sharing what I’ve learned, and what has helped me navigate through this time in this solo episode. Here’s a sneak peek:

⦿ Why it does no good, for new moms like me, to keep how we’re feeling to ourselves

⦿ How exclusive pumping saved my postpartum life

⦿ My challenges with breastfeeding (don’t @ me)

⦿ How I found my mom tribe, and my newfound boundaries, and

⦿ How my plans were shot once the realness of postpartum life set in

10 Jul 2020208: How I’m Transitioning Into Motherhood & Easing Back Into Entrepreneur Life00:21:47

I’m coming to you live with another solo episode, and the topic of discussion: transitioning into motherhood and getting back into the entrepreneurship life.

I’m giving you a behind-the-scenes look into how I’m flowing in this new uncharted territory for my life and my career. I went from being an entrepreneur with no kids to a momtrepreneur with new expectations, some of which I've had to shift my gears about with regard to my new lifestyle. Because my old life was all I knew, I was subconsciously basing my post-maternity leave expectations on my old life, which didn’t leave room for the ebbs and flows of my new normal with baby and business.

And in the midst of it all, there were a few things I didn’t anticipate. Take a listen to this episode to find out how I had to re-frame my personal expectations for myself, re-learn how to set deadlines, and guard my priorities; adopt a new life and work style, and what I’m learning from the lives of other momtrepreneurs.

25 Sep 2019165: How PhD, Gettin’ Grown Podcast Host, and Coach of #TeamTypingFast Dr. Tykeia Robinson Juggles it All (Side Hustle Spotlight)01:10:21

This week, I chatted with Dr. Tykeia Robinson (also known as Keia). You may know her as co-host of the Gettin’ Grown Podcast, but she is also a PhD in Higher Education and multi-passionate side hustler with over 10 years of experience in higher education. She is also Head Coach of #TeamTypingFast, an online community of practice for anybody with work to do.

I started getting to know Keia last year after attending the Gettin’ Grown live podcast show. Fun fact: she and co-host Jade are one of the BIGGEST inspirations for me doing my own live show

One of the things I admire most about Keia is her commitment to supporting, encouraging, and uplifting Black women.

In addition to Gettin’ Grown and #TeamTypingFast, Keia’s full-time job involves doing research that informs curriculum, policy, and practice, and she develops training for school faculty leaders. In today’s episode, she shares how she juggles everything, and what she’s learning along the way.

09 Dec 2020229: How to Actually Make Money Podcasting00:28:29

Whether you’re thinking about starting a podcast or already have one, one of the biggest questions that you might have is: “Will I even make money doing this?” And the short answer is: “yes!”

After a year of earning consistent revenue with my podcast, I was able to quit my job to focus on Side Hustle Pro full-time, all in the name of monetization. I didn’t start out with the mindset of making money off my podcast, but I quickly began to test and see that it was possible. Trust me, I secured a $4,000 multi-month sponsorship contract on my first try.

In this week’s episode, I help you set realistic expectations when it comes to podcast monetization. I also breakdown how, exactly, to make money podcasting, and how and when I started earning revenue. There are tons of ways to do it, and we’ll focus on the big three:

  • Creating valuable content for future clients
  • Developing products listeners love and need, and
  • All things sponsorships

20 Sep 201762: How Evita Robinson Changed the Face of Travel00:35:01

Today on the show, we have a woman who started a travel movement. Her name is Evita Robinson and she is the Founder of Nomadness Travel Tribe.

Evita has always been a creator in visual media. Yet, it was a trip to Paris, six weeks after graduating from undergrad, that changed the scope of her personal and professional life. So in September 2011, she created the Nomadness Travel Tribe, an online social community primarily for travelers of color. Nomadness was the first of its kind targeting diverse millennials, in the newly coined 'black travel movement'. The group currently surpasses 16,000 international members, with over 100,000 passport stamps, and nearly 100 meetups a year, all across the globe. Evita has shattered the myth that people of color don’t travel. She is also a keynote speaker, TED Resident, consultant for Destination Marketing Organizations, and continues her love of seeing the world while writing her first book.

On today’s episode, Evita gets into:

  • How Nomadness started organically and she never expected it to be a business
  • Why she doesn’t believe in 5 years plans and why you shouldn’t either
  • Why we all need multiple revenue streams
  • How she recovered from near burnout
  • How she decides what’s best for her brand

01 Jul 2020207: Entrepreneur Diaries: I Had A Baby During the COVID-19 Pandemic!00:53:58

Guys, I’m back! And if you’re asking yourself, ‘Back? Where did she go?’ then this is the episode for you to listen to.

I’m fresh off maternity leave.

My husband and I had our first child, a beautiful baby boy back in April, and despite all that’s going on, I couldn’t be happier and more grateful for how things turned out.

When we found out we were pregnant, we could have never imagined that we would be having a baby during a pandemic. The only Corona I knew about was the beer. But we did it and we made it through with God’s grace.

I was fortunate to be able to select and be seen by all Black women doctors for my prenatal care. My baby was even delivered by a Black woman (Nigerian!) doctor, so it was just #BlackGirlMagic throughout my entire experience.

In today’s episode, I’m sharing my:

✔︎ What it felt like having a baby shower one week and going into quarantine lockdown the next week

✔︎ My experiences, cravings, and symptoms during every trimester

✔︎ The ways Coronavirus impacted my pregnancy and postpartum experience

✔︎ How I prepared to take maternity leave as an entrepreneur

So what was it like having a baby during the COVID-19 pandemic? Take a listen. And share with all of your corona moms so they know they’ll be OK! Check out this episode and others on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Soundcloud, and Stitcher.
