12 Dec 2019 | Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Vayishlach: Living Up to Our Namesake | 00:07:34
A D'var Torah for Parashat Vayishlach. This week, Jacob faces his toughest challenge yet - and prevails. He then has his name changed to Israel, meaning literally to have "wrestled with God". In our time, the children of Israel and the rest of humanity face our most daunting opponent in history. How can we follow Jacob's lead and tackle this issue head-on? 13 Feb 2020 | Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Yitro: Idols of Silver & Gold | 00:07:59
A D'var Torah for Parashat Yitro. In this week’s parsha, the Israelites receive the Ten Commandments at Mt. Sinai. Not only are animals given some pretty radical rights here, but there is foreshadowing for next week’s narrative of the golden calf with a warning against idols of silver & idols of gold. We are plagued with some radical worshipers of these idols - Big Agriculture, who exploit animals, undocumented laborers, the small farmers they put out of business, and the American taxpayers who are made to bail out these mega-corporations when they intentionally overproduce. We explore how we can combat them in this week’s Dvar.

A D'var Torah for Parashat Miketz. This week’s parsha features the quiet heroism of an unlikely figure - the Pharaoh of Egypt! And no - it’s not the one who you’re probably thinking of. We discuss Neo-Hasidism and it's similarities and differences to traditional Hasidism, including it's approaches to Halakha. A D'var Torah for Parashat Vayakhel-Pekudei. After an entire book of God giving again and again to the Israelites, the Book of Exodus concludes with the Israelites finally giving in return. The gift they give in return is shockingly simple, and yet, there is so much to learn in our time from this small gesture by the Israelites after all that God has done for them. Join us for a harmonious fusion of yoga and prayer, led by Jewish Vegan Yogi, Kim Siegel, PMP, E-RYT 500, as we honor the sacred bond between humans and animals in celebration of Passover. In this special gathering, inspired by the ancient Jewish tradition of the blessings of the animals, we invite you to partake in a gentle and inclusive yoga practice suitable for all levels. Kim is a 500-hour certified yoga instructor with a passion for teaching. Her yoga journey began as a student seeking an alternative way of improving her mental health. The practice became her lifelong medicine. The discovery of the awareness of breath linked with the movement of the body was a truly transformative experience. She was called to share this powerful medicine with others. Kim’s classes are alignment-based and offer variations of postures. Her classes also focus on the connection of the pose with the subtlety of the breath. Her intention is for students to feel the freedom to make an intuitive choice about their practice on the mat. 11 Jun 2021 | Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Korach: Sacred Responsibility | 00:08:50
A D'var Torah for Parashat Korach. In this week's parsha, a rebellion takes place against Moses and Aaron's leadership. The rebels, lead by Korach, insist that their inherent holiness should keep Moses and Aaron from elevating themselves above them. In our time, the Korachs of the world insist that their inherent freedoms should prevent initiatives the overhaul our food system to a sustainable, plant-based one that will help to mitigate the looming climate catastrophe. The Torah's prioritization of freedom against other values is explored in this dvar Torah. Recorded & edited by Alex Weisz "Uniq - Japan" is under a Royalty Free license. 31 Oct 2019 | Plant-Based Torah: Noach - When Creation Goes Wrong | 00:08:56
A D'var Torah for Parashat Noach by Alex Weisz. This week, God brokenheartedly decides to start over because of the wickedness, injustice, and corruption of God’s own creation. Having been made in God’s image, we too need to explore when a human creation can no longer be justified - and the emotions that can come with that. 17 Apr 2020 | Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Shemini: Holy Eating | 00:06:11
A D'var Torah for Parashat Shemini. In this week’s parsha, the Torah outlines which animals are permitted and forbidden from being eaten by the Israelites, concluded with a Divine statement that "You shall be holy, for I am holy." We explore that, despite the reluctant permissions of certain animals to be eaten, this holiness descends from what is not eaten, rather than what is. 05 Mar 2020 | Plant-Based Torah - Parashat Tetzaveh: You Are What You Do! | 00:06:02
A D'var Torah for Parashat Tetzaveh. We Jews may find ourselves asking - what does the Torah want from us anyway? This week's parsha offers us an answer from an unlikely topic: Animal Sacrifices. Parashat Tetzaveh focuses heavily on the priestly order instituted in the Torah, as well as some of the earliest commands regarding the sacrificial system - an uncomfortable topic for many contemporary readers, especially folks who eat plant-based. Nevertheless, a discussion between a few Rabbinic Sages may offer fresh insights about sacrifices and what the Torah asks of us. Disclaimer: Shamayim: Jewish Animal Advocacy does not support the consumption of honey. This is because of the ethical implications. The first issue surrounding honey is the amount of effort it takes bees to produce. Some estimates suggest it takes one bee a whole lifetime to produce just one twelfth of a teaspoon of honey – considering the number of honey products available in any given supermarket, and the drastically declining number of bees worldwide, this seems like an unfair trade. Beyond the effort it takes, large-scale honey production is usually not done with bees’ interests in mind. Some ethical issues which the Vegan Society identifies include:

Motivated by Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls on “every person living on this planet” to care for our shared earth, Bishop John has called on the Catholic community to make practical responses to deal with climate change. In March 2019, Bishop John wrote to everyone in the Diocese of Salford calling on them to play their part in responding to climate change and to ‘think globally, act locally’. In the same letter, Bishop John announced his plans to transform his home at Wardley Hall into an ambitious flagship project, Laudato Si Centre.
