25 Aug 2024427 - Phillips Workroom with Mary and Callye Phillips01:28:27
Mary Phillips is the owner of Phillips Window Workroom, a custom drapery and soft home furnishings workroom in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Mary has been in the industry for over 40 years, first starting with upholstery with her Sister-In-Law, creating relationships with clients and vendors and then going off on her own out of the house. In 2003, Mary found a location in Chadds Ford and moved out of the house and the rest has been history! Mary has three children with her husband, Mike, a sweet dog Ruby and a huge loving family that loves spending time together and going on vacations to the beach or hanging by the pool.

Callye is 26 years old and is Mary’s daughter. She grew up in and out of the workroom. When Callye was 6, Mary moved out of the house. Through the years, Callye always appreciated that her Mom was able to come to all her sporting events, and could be there when she needed her since her Mom was her own boss. After going to West Chester University, and finishing right in the pandemic in May 2020, Callye didn’t quite have a game plan. She spent a year and a half nannying before deciding to join the PWW team, and just celebrated three years with them. Callye enjoys the creative process, working with customers and designers and seeing their beautiful custom work come to life. Outside of the workroom, Callye coaches volleyball and still plays, (has a boyfriend), and loves spending time with family & friends and her three beautiful nephews! (Soon to be 4).

Episode 3 of the Opportunity Thinking Series is an interview with Kitty Stein, author of Price Your Work With Confidence.  Ann K. Johnson is now the publisher of the book and she joins us in an entertaining conversation with Kitty.  It is a little bit difficult for me to comprehend not thinking about window treatments or our industry on a daily basis, but that is what retirement looks like for Kitty now!

Encompassing a career of 30 years in the Window Covering Industry, Kitty became a highly respected personality who wore many hats as an entrepreneur: Soft covering designer and fabricator, some of which appeared in national magazines and local designer show houses; sole proprietor workroom to the trade; partnership owning a retail decorating business and wholesale workroom; employer of decorators and workroom fabricators; monthly columnist for two prominent magazines to the trade, wrote well over 200 articles spanning 13 years; seminar presenter; teacher and development assistant to the original window coverings school, eventually called the Custom Home Furnishings Academy (CHF School); business consultant to the trade; and author and publisher of five business books to the trade, of which PRICE YOUR WORK WITH CONFIDENCE, published in 2000, is still selling. Kitty was also a board member of the Window Covering Association of America (WCAA) as a liaison with the workroom industry. During her tenure, she saw the development of the Certified Workroom Professional (CWP) program from conception to fruition, for which she received a special award from the WCAA. She also received a Life Time Educator award from the CHF School for her contributions to the industry.

Ann K. Johnson owns Sew Easy Windows LLC, a wholesale workroom in Ohio, established in 1992. She is the author of The Professional Workroom Handbook of Swags I & II, and publisher for Kitty Stein's Price Your Work With Confidence!  Ann offers private workroom training, seminars, and hands-on classes in workroom fabrication, pattern drafting, efficiency, and pricing. Her topics are always packed with time-saving tips and techniques.  Contact Ann at ajohnson@seweasywindows to put together a training package for you.  Ann is an instructor for The Workroom Channel and Workroom Tech, a webinar instructor for WCAA, and a speaker for The Custom Workroom Conference. She is a member of the Greater Cleveland Drapery Professionals and WCAA.  Ann also is an educator for Dream Draper

Claire Herne is the owner of Louie Custom Drapery, located in Darien Connecticut.
Claire's background is in investment banking, but she has sewn throughout her life, just for fun!
Moving from the UK to the US in 2009 meant decorating a big new house and she struggled to find a local workroom so she pulled out her sewing machine and started making drapes and pillows and found that she really loved it.
Soon, Claire, had friends asking her to start making soft furnishings for them and she decided that she should do this professionally.

Louie Custom Drapery (named after Claire's mom and daughter) has been in business for just over 4 years - she serves the local trade community.
Claire loves to interact with other workroom professionals and most of her learning has been through this wonderful group and at Workroom Tech.

Claire lives with her 15-year-old daughter, 2 dogs, a cat, and 2 rabbits (aka Darien Petting Zoo!), her workroom has recently been located in her garage and things are really taking off now.

26 Dec 2016#24 Marylan Borchardt and Jeanelle Dech - A legacy continues!00:42:50

For many of us, our first M'Fay Pattern was our introduction to professional drapery making.  It's amazing that such an extensive collection of instructional manuals and patterns all started because of one woman's thought that someone ought to be making them!

In this podcast, Marylan Borchardt and family talk about her initial interest in sewing, the early days working within her sister's business, the development of her first pattern (The Empire) and the growth of the M'Fay Pattern Company.  They are joined by Jeanelle Dech of Adaptive Textiles who recently acquired the patterns, and shares with us her vision of the future.

I hope all of  you have a Merry Christmas, a Happy Hanukah and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!  I look forward to hosting more podcasts in 2017!

03 Mar 2024402 - Rachel Crowe -If You Don't Have your Own Wisdom, You Borrow it From Others01:13:16
Rachel began her business in 2004 on the dining table of her mother’s living room after a fluke encounter with a family friend at the local bakery.  Who knew that croissants would be the catalyst to begin a soft furnishings business? The seed had been planted several years after visiting a stranger's home and noticing custom bedding, draperies, and floor-length round tablecloths. “I remember thinking …’hey I wonder if I could do that!’ after a sneaky examination of the undersides and backsides of those items.”  Sewing had begun for Rachel at the age of 11 and 4-H sewing programs, but it was not until 17 years later that the entrepreneurial bug bit hard and spawned a new vocational life trajectory!

20 Feb 2022297 - OT Series - Two Sisters Ecotextiles01:00:24
Almost 20 years ago Leigh Anne was looking for fabric to reupholster her sofa.  She found fabrics that were sophisticated, but not environmentally friendly; or “green” (mostly recycled polyester – actually a poor green choice), but not stylish.  Even the fabrics claiming to be “organic” were processed with chemicals that were harmful to people and the planet - and many of those chemicals remain in the fabric.

Since Leigh couldn’t find a company that was creating entirely safe but gorgeous  fabrics using organic or sustainable methods and using zero plastic (polyester, nylon, etc), she enlisted her sister, Patty, and together they formed Two Sisters Ecotextiles, to “change the way textiles are being made.”

Having a sewing business had been Doshie Witcher's dream since her mother taught her to hold a needle and thread. While in elementary school, she was sewing clothing for herself and others. In 1990 she opened Doshie's Custom Sewing and began specializing in alterations, custom work, and bridal designs. After making her first window valance, she decided that making window treatments were her passion and she spent the next 15 years working with interior designers to create custom window treatments. This led her to want to create her own line of valances so she designed Hidden Pocket Rod valances, which allow intricate curtain designs to be hung using a basic continental curtain rod. With these designs, Doshie expanded into Etsy in 2012, and now sells her Hidden Pocket Rod valances on her Etsy shop nationwide and internationally under the business name Black Belt Home Decor. Doshie is a second-degree black belt in Shorin Ryu Karate and spends her spare time training others in karate, singing in her local church choir, and spending time with her family.

05 May 2024411 - Olga Kott - Creating A Family Business00:51:12
We are a family from Ukraine who have been living and working in the UK for over 17 years.
Our backgrounds were unrelated to the interior design business. But we always love craft , had ambitions, and lots of ideas.  Our shared passion and belief in each other led us to start Kott Soft Furnishings.

Our busy working studio is nestled in the beautiful countryside of Hampshire,  UK.

I’ve worked as a curtain maker for over 10 years and it's my absolute love and passion.

After being overwhelmed with orders, my husband joined me, leaving his previous job. He does upholstery and fitting and has become an integral part of our family business.

We are happy and united more than ever.

Together, we provide a comprehensive service, from initial measurements and fabric selection to the final fitting.
Our children also enjoy helping out, and perhaps one day, they will carry on our family business.

Leatherwood Design Co is a custom window treatment fabrication studio, located in Ossining, New York, in the breathtaking Hudson River Valley. We work to the trade and delight in fine fabrics and workmanship. It's an understatement to say we love what we do!
Begun as a part-time pillow and cushion workroom in 1987, in 1999 we became a full-time workroom creating window treatments. Fabric and sewing has been my life-long obsession and I consider it a privilege to be able to make a living doing what I love.
This journal is dedicated to documenting what we do every day: we enjoy showing off the gorgeous fabrics we work with, and the window treatments we make from them; discuss the design and fabrication process; and share information about some of our resources, colleagues, and inspiration.

Moving from the UK to the US in 2009 meant decorating a big new house and she struggled to find a local workroom so she pulled out my sewing machine and started making drapes and pillows and found that she really loved it.
Soon Claire had friends asking her to start making soft furnishings for them and she decided that she should do this professionally.

Louie Custom Drapery (named after Claire's mom and daughter) has been in business for just over 3 years - she serves the local trade community.
Claire loves to interact with other workroom professionals and most of her learning has been through this wonderful group and at Workroom Tech.

Claire lives with her 14-year-old daughter, 2 dogs, a cat, and 2 rabbits (aka Darien Petting Zoo!), her workroom has recently been located to her garage and things are really taking off now.
