26 Aug 2020464. How To Grow Your Business Without Sucking At It00:37:11

Tersh speaks with Claire Chandler about growing his business at a rapid speed without collapsing due to the speed of his growth. They also speak about Claire's book called "The Whirlpool Effect"... btw, the back story of the book's naming is enough of a golden nugget that it could have been the entire episode's interview topic!

Working with many diverse startups and corporations over the
last 25 years, Claire experienced that most companies fall apart
once they start to scale. As a solution to this business timebomb,
she created the ’Whirlpool Effect’ - a revolutionary way to align
your leaders and teams around a unifying vision that attracts,
retains and motivates the right talent to achieve your mission.

Claire’s simple yet powerful process is helping many companies
find and fix bottlenecks that are choking their business
performance so they can rapidly scale without the growing
pains.

It's time to grow into the leader your people can't wait to follow.

Check out the impressive list of topics Claire's book covers:

  • Stop bleeding talent
(and why it has little to do with the hiring process)

  •

Scale without losing your intimate company culture
Remove the invisible wall between your HR and
    Leadership team

  •

Bottle up your founder’s personality so it stays alive
    during company growth

  • Become a magnetic leader by implementing the
    ‘FLOW’ process

  • Stop acting like a startup and expand without falling
    apart

Today's show deals entrepreneurs who, with big growth goals, realize there’s a substantial gap between where they are now and where they want to be. Sharon Cully, owner and founder of Simply Processes, knows the best way to close that gap is through a clear, robust vision and well-crafted processes all with the right level of focus.

Over the course of 15+ years managing teams and leading projects in blue-chip FMCG companies (including Coca-Cola, Diageo, and GlaxoSmithKline), Sharon has successfully employed best practices and process improvement methods to increase performance and minimize inventory/operating costs, all while meeting customer objectives. She’s learned what it takes for large companies to succeed and grow, and that ongoing, recurring problems can kill business growth.

Sharon founded Simply Processes as a way to utilize her corporate experience to help smaller entrepreneurial companies gain control over their business processes, ultimately making more money while also freeing up the owner’s time, giving them more choices – to grow or sell their business, or simply work less. She works with entrepreneurs who have already been successful but are now feeling stuck, helping them scale to the next level by working with their teams to put systems and processes in place. Clear, documented tasks and responsibilities, along with successful automation and delegation, ensure that everyone delivers consistently outstanding results.

Big growth goals require big transformation, and many entrepreneurs worry that their employees will resist the change. Sharon has extensive experience helping large groups successfully navigate change and uses tried-and-true strategies to help employees transition and adopt new ways of working.

08 Jun 2022659. How to Increase Your Technician’s Efficiency in 20 Minutes00:24:43

In this episode, Billy is going to dive deep into job efficiency and how we can work to make our businesses 100% efficient through software and automation! You surely don’t want to miss this show!

https://sera.tech/go/service-business-mastery/

Sera is all about time and efficiency!

[00:04:00] “And efficiency will allow you to offset these price increases because a large portion of the money spent on running these businesses is spent on inefficiencies, redundancy, and other such things. That is, after all, what Sera is all about. Isn't it about time? And if we can reduce everyone's time while increasing their efficiency, we'll see a significant improvement. So BillyGo, my HVAC and plumbing company, has been beta testing this thing for nearly three months now. And our efficiency has remained relatively high,” says Billy Stevens.

[00:05:00] “We're still double that, and we expect to see even more progress as time goes on”, he adds.

[00:06:00] Billy talks about how field service management software handles your day-to-day operations while working to increase the financial health of your business.

  • You can see your labor costs in real-time with their patent-pending job time efficiency reports!

A price book is a key to success, efficiency, and profitability!

[00:11:00] “The Price book is a living piece of our software. As a result, it is unique. It's not static.  It aids in the creation of these efficiencies. And without it, you won't be able to achieve the desired efficiencies’, says Billy Stevens.

  • “Sera makes it easy to modify and update each task, equipment item, and overhead expense separately or in bulk.”

Do you know what’s the most interesting part!?

  • Price Book Updates in Less than 2 Minutes!

Billy Stevens recently joined Service Business Mastery Podcast and here are some key highlights from the show:

  • What makes job efficiency accurate?
  • The right KPI you need and why setting smart KPIs is important.

He has owned multiple air conditioning businesses in North Carolina over the previous 20 years, and we tap into this experience to ask him to share his largest struggles when it comes to operating a business.

In today's episode, Tersh and Zack talk about 5 reasons small business owners fail soon after beginning their heating and air conditioning business. They both speak from personal experiences within the business, and share topics that were never shared with them before they started their businesses!

Our Deep Dive~

  1. Being too technical.
  2. Not being technical enough.
  3. Not seeking the guidance of coaching.
  4. ...you'll have to listen to the rest of the episode for these juicy details!

The most successful people out there are not half technicians and half owners...they step out of the van and become full owners.

02 Nov 2018212: 4 Ways To Have A Profitable Service Business W/ Mike Michalowicz00:23:54

Mike and I talk about the ways new business owners can easily know if they are profitable without having to wait unit their bookkeeper or accountant give them their monthly P&L statement. You know as soon as you move the money to the appropriate accounts if you’re making money or losing money on each job. You also put your money into your profit accounts first! So you make a profit on every job rather than your profit being the number left over when the expenses are all paid.

1 Create 5 accounts, in the beginning, at your bank.

2 Determine the percentage of money that goes to each of those accounts.

3 Take out 50% of the profits each quarter to spend on yourself….NOT on the business!

4 Create a CapEx account to budget for future capital expenses within the business.

15 Mar 2023How Bluon Built the Largest HVAC Community on Earth w/ Peter Capuciati00:41:58

One of the things that make the HVAC industry unique from other trades is its complexity. It’s common to see two HVAC systems using different parts for the same function, even if they were made by the same company. The problem worsens if a technician has to work with aftermarket parts while still ensuring compatibility. This makes experience and knowledge acquired through years of hands-on work critical, especially for technicians that regularly need to make decisions on the ground.

What makes it even more difficult is the lack of a brand-agnostic database for HVAC systems that technicians can cross reference, making information difficult to access and pass on to the newer technicians with limited experience. This stunts industry growth and frustrates both clients and contractors. This is the problem that Peter Capuciati and his company has addressed with Bluon, a mobile app and support platform designed for HVAC technicians, contractors, suppliers, and distributors.

In this episode of the Service Business Mastery podcast, Tersh and Josh talk to Bluon’s CEO and chairperson Peter Capuciati. Peter shares the story of how attempting to release a new kind of refrigerant opened their eyes to the problems of the industry, and how those realizations resulted in the creation of Bluon.

Peter shares the pain points that every technician faces while working with limited knowledge in the field, and how using Bluon helps alleviate those issues. He also talks about expanding the app’s features to benefit contractors and suppliers to make working in the HVAC industry more efficient and profitable for all.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Developing the largest database of HVAC systems in the world

  • Technicians as the guardians of HVAC innovation

  • How Bluon got both technicians and suppliers to use their platform

In this episode of the Service Business Mastery Podcast, you will learn how to set your prices correctly and how to know your numbers.

Jim advises that in addition to investing in the skills required to run your business effectively, you should also invest in the financial skills that every business owner requires to thrive.

Financial information may intimidate you, or you may rely on your accountants and bookkeepers to handle all of your financial work for you, which is why OUTSOURCING such work has its own set of benefits.

[00:36:00] “I love numbers, but bookkeeping and taxes are unbearable to me, so I strongly recommend that you do what you do best and delegate things you can outsource, such as accounting and payroll. There are advantages to doing so, especially if you are the CEO of a company,” Jim Kruspe

17 Feb 2023Take Care Of Employees, And They Take Care Of You w/ Jim Clark00:27:00

Unfortunately, the trades are filled with people who are qualified to be technicians, but have received no training to be a business owner and leader. Some people eventually figure leadership out, but the majority don’t and that leads to a lot of businesses failing and jobs lost in the process.

The truth is, leadership is an entirely different skill set from being a technician. You could be the best plumbing, electrical, or HVAC technician in the world and still fail at operating a business. Because apart from knowing the trades like the back of your hand, you also need to know people. And running a business is all about taking care of the people that work for you.

In this episode of the Service Business Mastery podcast, we talk to Jim Clark, owner of the Blue Diamond Consultants, a consulting company dedicated to coaching home service companies that want to grow and exit in the next 3 to 5 years. Having owned and sold his previous trade companies, Jim talks about the hardships and pain points he met along the way.

Jim specifically focuses on taking care of his employees, and doing everything he can to make sure that they love doing the work they do, even when times are tough. Jim also talks about creating a positive workplace culture that not only benefits your employees, but helps your business earn clients as well.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why your first job as an owner is to make your employees happy

  • Employee recognition goes a long way

  • How to build a good workplace culture

  • Why taking care of business is also about taking care of people

30 Sep 2020470. Should We Invest In IRA When We Are Already Investing In Our Businesses w Terry White00:29:36

Tersh talks with Terry White, President & CEO of Sunwest Trust. He has been working in the real estate & investment world for 35+ years, and he’s got the expertise to prove it. After graduating with a degree in Accounting and working as a controller for a local title company, Terry launched a small escrow company, which quickly gained a reputation for being honest, hardworking, and fair. In 2003, Terry took his success a step further and formed Sunwest Trust, Inc. Headquartered in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Sunwest Trust, Inc. was founded on the principle of offering clients real-world solutions to all of their self-directed IRA and escrow management needs. Today, Sunwest Trust, together with Sunwest Escrow, serves its clients as both escrow agents and IRA custodians for Individual Retirement Accounts.

Terry has led Sunwest Trust with one goal: to provide outstanding service to each and every client by listening to them and learning exactly what they want. His passion lies in educating investors to build their own self-directed IRA’s, customized to fit their needs and financial goals. When he’s not in the office, Terry enjoys fly fishing, biking, traveling with his wife, and spending time in Colorado.

Check out this summary of Terry's book titled "When All You Have Is A Hammer...: An Informational Guide To Self-Directed IRAs":

“If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.” Bernard Baruch, American Businessman

As a young man, Terry White worked as a framer for his dad’s construction company. He used a big, heavy framing ax to pound 16-penny nails into 2 x 4s. An astute observer, he noticed that the finish carpenters on the site used a delicate, little hammer for their work of installing woodwork, window sills, and molding. The tool Terry used for his work was not the right tool for the job of a finish carpenter, nor did he have the skill to become a finish carpenter; he recognized that and took the lesson with him into adulthood.

With that story in mind, Terry chose the title for this book to position the Self-Directed IRA as another tool you may use to achieve your retirement goals. It is his opinion that Self-Directed IRAs are not for everyone; but for the right person, a Self-Directed IRA may be just the right tool for the job.

Self-Directed IRAs are great tools if you have the knowledge and skills about that in which you are investing, or want to acquire the knowledge and skills about that in which you want to invest; or are able to hire someone with the knowledge and skills about that in which you want to invest. Terry wrote this book as an informational guide for those who may be interested in Self-Directed IRAs. Readers will gain a broad overview of what owners of Self-Directed IRAs may expect and some of the investments they may purchase.
