Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss Boris and Natasha: The Movie. Two Pottsylvanian spies infiltrate America whilst followed by mysterious assassins. 

The first live-action film based off the 1960s cartoon The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends, Boris and the Natasha: The Movie premiered on the premium Showtime channel. You have some SCTV favorites (Dave Thomas, John Candy), a brief John Travolta cameo, and elements of spy satire. Too bad the plot's as convoluted as a real spy novel, the America fish out of water story is less interesting than the Pottsylvanian caper that starts the film, and nobody except for the excellent narrator (Corey Burton) plays things at the manic winking pitch the cartoon did.

The kid actors are turning into teens and the story's getting a bit more mature. Gary Oldman has some nuance to Sirius Black, his titular Prisoner of Azkaban. Aside from a final shot that would be cheesy by 1970s standards, this is a less cloying movie than the first two and the best Potter yet.

48 Hrs. (1982)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller start their discussion of the Adam West Batman features with 1966's Batman: The Movie. Stars Adam West, Burt Ward, Cesar Romero, and Lee Meriwether.

Released between the first two seasons of the Batman TV show, Batman: The Movie features Batman and Robin against a supervillain team-up of the Joker, the Penguin, the Riddler, and the Catwoman. Although it's a bit overstuffed with plot, there's good setpieces here. A subplot with Batman falling for Catwoman undercover in a Russian guise as Kitka has some nice heat to it.

Some episodes of the Batman TV show are better than this film, some are worse. It's not going to knock your socks off, but iconic scenes like "Bat Shark Repellant" keep up the fun.

One of the classic movie musicals of all time, The Wizard of Oz represents the film industry shifting from black and white to color and planting a firm foot on the ground that sound in movies is the inevitable future. A lighter take on Oz than the quirky source material from author L. Frank Baum, the Wizard of Oz moves along at a zippy pace that has an ending that's a bit too convenient. In 2011, a UK stage musical was made based on this movie featuring new songs by Tim Rice Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Pilot S1E1 - The Critic

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Thrasher discuss the original version of King's Quest. Developed originally for the IBM PC Jr., this was Sierra's first game with the AGI engine that allowed players to control their avatar (in this case, Graham) with a keyboard or joystick. Users still had to use a text parser to type in commands. 

While King's Quest is simple with its "fetch me 3 items" quest, its nods to Western fairy tales and the open world to explore have genuine charms. Cheap Rumpelstiltskin puzzle aside, King's Quest is worth a play to see where the roots of 1990s adventure gaming began. Warning: this game contains frustrating stairs and beanstalks to climb.

Troma's first real big hit, The Toxic Avenger combines comedy, gore, and action into an entertaining mix. A few action scenes drag on too long, but otherwise the story keeps things simple with a revenge plot and a sympathetic main character. This movie is set to get a Hollywood remake starring Peter Dinklage later this year!

American Wedding feels like it's on autopilot most of the time. So called hilarious obstacles blocking the wedding planning from going down are solved with such ease that it's a wonder they existed in the first place. Eric Allan Kramer livens the joint up a bit as Bear. So many of the main characters are missing in action that American Wedding feels more like a spin-off than a true sequel.

American Wedding often feels labored and lazy.

A sequel so mediocre it took a lot of the cast convincing to even appear in it, Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds in Paradise is a sanded off take on the first film with the requisite beach hijinks ensuing. Ogre (Donald Gibb) gets some nice moments, but this is an inferior copy of the original with less heart.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and BJ discuss Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace. A young boy is surrendered by his mother to older men with other plans.

An infamous entry in what's now dubbed The Skywalker Saga (thanks Disney!), Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace was George Lucas' first return to the director's chair in over two decades and it shows. While we get some pretty solid world building, we also get maybe 15% of the prequel trilogy's story stretched to over two hours. Overall, the acting is not the problem here. Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson make for a nice pair of reserved Jedi knights, Natalie Portman brings posh notes to Queen Amidala, and Ray Park gives Darth Maul a fierce physicality. John Williams pulls off one of his better late period scores that ranges from subtle nuance (Anakin's theme is an inverted arrangement of the Imperial March) to disturbing bombast (Duel of the Fates is one powerful slice of music no matter how you slice it).

Poor Fievel ends up traveling out west to become a cowboy, er, cowmouse.

More of a comedy action piece than the sentimental original, Fievel Goes West goes in a bold new direction. John Cleese and Jon Lovitz are a riot as the villains. The later animated TV series, Fievel's American Tails, continues with the Western setting.

From the writer and director of Police Academy, Dudley Do-Right is a live-action adaptation of the Jay Ward cartoon aimed at a very young audience. Brendan Fraser and Sarah Jessica Parker are very sincere in the leads, but Alfred Molina steals the show with his over-the-top faithful portrayal of Snidely Whiplash. It's an inoffensive movie at best dragged down by a plot with no real stakes until the end. The Fractured Fairy Tales cartoon that opens the movie is better than the feature!

The Santa Clause 2 (2002)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss the rare pilot for Revenge of the Nerds from 1991. Nerds join a fraternity to score with chicks with network TV level hijinks. 

Taking the standard trope of TV shows spun off movies, this pilot episode retells its feature film inspiration as a single TV episode. Well, actually it's maybe the first half of the original movie. Things are toned down, there's a constant laugh track as was the style of the time (this has major Saved by the Bell vibes), and it drags like snail juice. This is the worst thing I've watched for Sequelcast 2 and Friends since Highlander: The Source. Stars Robbie Rist and Richard Gant of The Brady Bunch and Jason Goes To Hell fame, respectively.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss An American Tail, an animated feature film from 1986. A mouse gets lost in New York City in the middle of his family's immigration to the United States. He also sings songs.

Former Disney animator Don Bluth directs this box office smash loosely inspired by Steven Spielberg's grandfather's experience of coming to America. Earnest to a point of often being cheesy, An American Tail has a lot of heart as Fievel ventures through his picaresque adventures. Don Bluth and Mel Brooks mainstay Dom DeLuise is a highlight as the vegetarian cat Tiger. An American Tail grossed more than twice as much as The Great Mouse Detective, the new Disney animated feature released the same year.

Adapted from a 1955 BBC miniseries, Quatermass II has a larger scope as we see how a small town's community sways their opinions on the effects of the big factory in town employing most of the locals. Brian Donlevy returns once again as Professor Quatermass and spits out exposition in a hurried manner that recalls some of Dan Aykroyd's old characters on Saturday Night Live. Vera Day is nice in a brief role as the barmaid Sheila.

Featuring a larger scope and a tighter story than the original, Quatermass 2 is worth tracking down.

Star Trek Into Darkness (2013)

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie. Back in Tromaville, Toxie becomes a corporate shill and battles a force of evil mankind has been fighting for decades. 

The Toxic Avenger III is more heavily plotted than its predecessor to its detriment. After an inspiring opening battle in a video rental store, the leaden plot takes a while to get going. There are fun King's Quest style puzzles Toxie has to solve near the end, but it's too little too late. This stinks worse than Toxie's atomic dumps!

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi and Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss Breaking Dawn Part 1, the fourth film in the Twilight Saga. Starring Billy Burke, Taylor Lautner, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart. Bella is pregnant with a human vampire hybrid.

A rather elegiac entry, Breaking Dawn Part 1 finally has Bella and Edward getting married. During their honeymoon, she becomes pregnant with a human vampire hybrid to deadly and gruesome results. Much like the first Twilight film, this feels more like a romance than anything else. Slow paced with somewhat effective body horror at the end, Breaking Dawn Part 1 feels like a chapter expanded into a novel. Makeup is especially good here (a gaunt Kristen Stewart is a bit too convincing). There's not much drama to be had beyond the core characters. One of the worst in the Twlight Saga.

Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss the first Mission: Impossible film. Stars Emmanuelle Béart, Tom Cruise, Henry Czerny, Vanessa Redgrave, Ving Rhames, and Jean Reno.

After a mission in Prague goes sideways, IMF member Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has to find the mole responsible.

The first of what is a 7-film series so far based off the 1960's TV show, Mission: Impossible features a twisty spy story with some fun action set pieces courtesy of director Brian De Palma (The Untouchables) and writers David Koepp, Robert Towne, and Steven Zaillian.

Tom Cruise is a bit edgier here than in later entries. Danny Elfman does faithful homages to the TV show theme with a score that hammers home the action beats. While the story might have one too many twists, the pacing and performances are strong.

Still one of the best films in the series, Mission: Impossible starts the film franchise off on strong footing.

An adaptation of one of Stephen King's earlier novels, The Shining focuses on more supernatural elements than quiet character moments. Impressive set design and iconic scenes help smooth over a somewhat slow pace at times. A classic of the horror genre, The Shining is worth watching.

After growing up in New York and Florida, Paul Reubens moved to Los Angeles to get his start in show business. An early member of the influential comedy troupe The Groundlings, Reubens is best known for his character Pee-Wee Herman who starred in 3 movies: Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Big Top Pee-Wee, and Pee-Wee's Big Holiday. Pee-Wee also appeared in several other movies and TV shows, not to mention having a popular series of his own with Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

Over the years, Paul Reubens continued to act in several notable films (Blow, Mystery Men, The Nightmare Before Christmas) and TV shows (30 Rock, The Blacklist, Gotham). He will be sorely missed.

A real dud, Jaws: The Revenge brings back Lorraine Gary as Ellen Brody who just can't seem to shake dangerous shark action. Mario Van Peebles makes for amusing comedic relief as Jake, but everything here has been done before and better in earlier Jaws films. Perhaps we'll get a notable Jaws sequel someday.

A bit overlong, this entry revels in the gross Troma aesthetic. Stan Lee narrates the opening montage with a gleeful twinkle in his eyes as this soft reboot proclaims this is the "true sequel" to the original. Fun moments, but nothing can match the fast pace and wit of the original.

Based on the hit novel by Peter Benchley, Jaws was Steven Spielberg's breakout hit as a film director. Working off a screenplay by Peter Benchley and Carl Gottlieb, Jaws is crafted more as a straight thriller than the somewhat lurid soap opera mechanics of the original novel. A dodgy mechanical shark resulted in not as much shark footage being shown in the film as was originally planned. This turned out to be a "happy accident" because it heightens the intensity in the mind of the viewer imagining what's happening instead of seeing the shark munch on every little thing it sees. Robert Shaw is especially good as the bitter World War II veteran Quint. Jaws is a cinema classic that still holds up, the very definition of a "must see" film.
