28 Feb 2022The ABA Therapy Controversy00:33:17

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

As an Occupational Therapist, I get asked all the time what my thoughts are on ABA, and if I think ABA is harmful. Keep reading to learn more about an OT’s perspective on ABA therapy, some alternatives to ABA therapy, and how to ensure your Autistic child can thrive even if they are in ABA therapy.

ABA (Applied behavioral analysis) therapy is a type of intervention where people are trained in behavioral analysis and use that lens to manipulate (either increase a certain behavior or reduce another behavior) behaviors in children, it’s most often used and associated with Autistic children.

I’ll be talking about my thoughts on ABA as an intervention for Autistic children, and discuss the practices that have made ABA seem harmful to the Autistic community.

11 Apr 2022Development of handwriting skills and when to Seek OT Support00:27:10

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Did you know that handwriting development depends on a solid foundation of sensory processing skills? Really, all of our motor output (both gross and fine motor) become refined and developed after sensory skills have been established. So, it’s pretty common for some kids with handwriting challenges to have underlying sensory processing issues. In this episode, we’ll talk about: common handwriting development struggles, when it’s time to seek OT support for handwriting challenges, and how OT can help with handwriting challenges.

18 Apr 2022Why your child is a picky eater, and when to seek help.00:26:36

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Happy OT month! In the U.S.,  we are celebrating the field of Occupational Therapy in April, and I’m celebrating it by spreading awareness about all the wonderful ways OT can help people be successful in their everyday lives. I recently did an episode on handwriting, which was episode 29. Today we are talking about picky eating, a topic that MANY parents face at one point in their parenting journey.

Some parents’ journey with their child’s picky eating is a little more severe than others, and we’re going to cover it all today. We’ll talk about the skills that are required for eating, how sensory processing is related to eating, how OT helps picky eating, and lastly when it’s time to seek support from an OT.

02 May 2022Talking about neurodiversity with family or friends00:20:30

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

When you have a neurodivergent child, most family gatherings, playdates or holiday parties can usually come with a lot of extra stress.

Maybe you have well-meaning friends or family who want to help during a meltdown. Or the judgey Aunt who always makes a comment about your child's diet.

Parents always ask me, how can they advocate for their child's needs and still show up to these family parties? Listen to this episode to find out my "script"

09 May 2022Behind the scenes: Morning routine00:31:22

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

If you follow me on instagram, you know that mornings before school are the hardest times for us. Now I'm letting you in to witness what a mostly typical morning sounds like for us.

In these audio clips, you'll hear my daughter struggle with her anxiety about clothes, her having a meltdown (and how I respond to the meltdown) + my processing of emotions after the morning meltdown.

At the end of the episode, you'll also hear me go through my process for "repairing" with her the next morning after having an extremely hard evening the night before.

23 May 2022When sticker charts backfire00:31:24

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Sticker charts, reward charts, token systems almost always work, until they don't.
I've seen sticker charts backfire more often than not, especially when used in a way with neurodivergent children to manipulate or change their behavior. In this episode, I detail why I don't love using these approaches with neurodivergent children and an alternative way to think about discipline. In the end, you can make the decision on what works best for your family.

30 May 2022Update on our eval journey00:32:10

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

You've heard me say the system is broken, but did you know it's broken even for those of us who work IN the system? As a pediatric OT, I have had to jump through hurdles and hoops just to get medical professionals to actively listen to my concerns about my daughter.

Just when I thought I got the "golden ticket" for an eval, another hurdle pops up.

Listen to this episode to  get caught up with where I'm at with Liliana's journey to getting evaluated and accessing services.

20 Jun 20226 tricks to get your child to cooperate00:13:09

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Dealing with power struggles and push back from your child when you just want them to clean up, get dressed, brush their teeth or simply transition from one activity to the next can be exhausting. While I wish I had a child who would just do what I say when I say it with no tricks, unfortunately, I have a very opinionated, strong willed girl and sometimes I need to get creative with motivating her to do things, rather than pulling the “because I said so” card, which always ends in an battle. These are my top 6 tricks for getting your child to cooperate with non-preferred tasks.

Tags are too itchy, seams are too irritating, pants are either too tight or too loose; the shoes don't feel "just right". Whatever the clothing issue is, I've heard it all. As a pediatric Occupational Therapist, clothing sensitivities is one of the most common challenges I support in my professional practice and in my person life. 31 Oct 2022What you need to know about Autism and how to talk about it: with Andi Putt, SLP00:46:26

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Andi is a pediatric speech language pathologist who specializes in Autism assessment. She is neurodivergent and passionate about Autism advocacy. Andi works in public schools and owns MrsSpeechieP. Join us for this interview episode where we talk all things Autism- how to celebrate it, think about it and talk about it in 2022 from a neurodiverse affirming perspective.

In this episode, you might notice that we use identify first language, which means we say things like “Autistic person” rather than “person with Autism”. This is inline with what most of the Autistic community has been voicing as they celebrate Autism as part of their identity, something to be proud of and something that can’t be taken away from them, if this is new for you, please have an open mind about that. Our goal is to de-stigmatize Autism and celebrate it!

Secondly,  you’ll hear Andi talk a lot about subtle signs and less common traits of Autism and if you don’t have a child with a diagnosis yet or this is something on your mind, know that if you resonate with some things in this episode, it doesn’t automatically mean your child is on the spectrum. We just want to spread awareness and education on all the different ways Autistic individuals can learn and behave so we can be more inclusive in our interactions with them in daily life.

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

If you have a neurodivergent child who tends to get overstimulated, overwhelmed and dysregulated around gift-giving time during the holidays, you’re not alone.

Over the years I’ve found ways to manage dysregulation around gifts and the meltdowns that usually happen and this year, I’m putting it all together so I can have a more regulated holiday season.

Ever wondered what a psychologist and an OT sound like when they get together and have a casual conversation about parenthood? Well here’s your invitation to hang out with Dr. Ann Louise Lockhart and me as we chatted together during our mom’s weekend getaway.

In our conversation, we touch on some of the following topics:

  • How kids and parenting has changed since the pandemic

  • What goes on for our kids (and us as parents) when we’re in fight or flight mode
  • Using bio-feedback to teach kids about regulation
  • Using mindfulness and modeling mindfulness to teach kids about regulation
  • Trying to avoid fear-based parenting
  • How to manage when  your partner has a different parenting style than you

09 Jan 2023Re-air: Accommodation vs Exposure for Sensory Kids00:22:29

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

So you have a sensory sensitive child who’s sensitive to seams of socks, mushy textured food, messy play, or toilets flushing. What should you do?

Do you accommodate every environment and task for them so they can avoid the sensory triggers altogether?

Does that make them spoiled?

Should you force them to get used to it?

Where do you draw the line?

Listen to this episode to find out how I talk about accommodating vs. exposure.

23 Jan 2023Is low self esteem and SPD linked?00:21:11

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

One of my absolute favorite books is The Out of Sync Child from Carol Kranowitz. If you haven’t read it yet, and you want to learn more abut SPD in a really easy to understand way, then check out this book.

One of the post it notes that I have from when I still read it was the one with the quote, on page 28, “low self-esteem is one of the most telling symptoms of Sensory Processing Disorder.”  and this is in the section of the book where she talks about all the social and emotional challenges that are often associated with SPD.

Today I want to unpack that idea and call to light some of the reasons why I think this is the case, based on my personal experience as a parent to a child with sensory needs, and as a clinician who’s worked with hundreds of kids over the past 7 years.

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

We had our first experience of a family play-date hang out at our house and, it went way worse than I ever could have imagined. I knew meltdowns would be possible, but I’ve never seen my daughter explode completely in front of new people before. In this episode, you’ll hear 2 parts:  My initial, next day raw reaction with very vulnerable thoughts… and then a 2nd part where I come back a few weeks later after having processed my thoughts about it (both with my therapist and internally) and sharing some tips in general for anyone else who plans to have a playdate.

06 Feb 2023Interoception: the missing piece to emotional regulation00:11:55

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Have you ever heard of interoception? It’s one of the 8 senses and it’s responsible for alerting us of our internal sensations, such as heart beat, hunger/thirst, fullness cues, aches, pains and other miscellaneous sensations. Have you ever said “I have butterflies in my tummy” or “My heart dropped”? Those sensations are interoception signals to your brain and it’s highly linked to emotional regulation. Listen to this episode to find out exactly how it’s linked to emotional regulation and some quick ways to start helping your child today.

Description (buzz sprout & meta):

We all benefit from using sensory supports throughout our day (regardless of neurotype). Listen to this episode to learn:

  • What a sensory lifestyle is
  • Signs your child may benefit from a sensory lifestyle
  • Examples of how we are all engaging in sensory regulation tools

06 Mar 2023Re-air: Is it Sensory or is it Behavior?00:20:37

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

This is a re-air of episode 20.

All behavior is a form of communication, but sometimes it can be hard to decipher what our children are communicating. When kids hit, kick, spit, punch, throw or push, parents often ask me, “is this sensory or is it behavior?”

I’m here to end that debate once and for all. Well, maybe not end it, but at least help you reframe it.

Because what the real question should be is “What is it my child is trying to communicate with me right now?”

Listen to this episode to hear more about the sensory and behavior link.

13 Mar 2023From whole body listening to everyday regulation with Elizabeth Sautter00:42:46

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

This week I get to share the great conversation I had with Elizabeth Sautter, an SLP who specializes in social communication, emotional regulation and executive functioning for over 25 years. She strives to provide neurodiverse affirming therapy, training, resources and an online course for parents with a passion to make it simple and sprinkled into everyday life as an “add IN”, not an add “ON” to everyday routines and activities. She’s an author of Make Social and Emotional Learning Stick! Practical Activities to Manage Emotional, Navigate Social Situations and Reduce Anxiety (elizabethsautter.com). She is a collaborator and trainer with The Zones of Regulation team and co-author of The Zones storybook set, Tools to Try card decks and Navigating the Zones game.  She strongly believes in supporting regulation and advocacy for all individuals (everydayregulation.com). She resides in California, with her husband, two sons, dog and cat.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • How the idea of whole body listening came to be
  • Why whole body listening needed to be redefined
  • How we should be teaching the idea behind whole body listening in a neuro-affirmative way
  • An ideal way to integrate regulation strategies and awareness into the mainstream classroom

27 Mar 2023Why you shouldn’t worry about your preschooler’s handwriting skills, with Susie Allison, M.Ed.00:48:35

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

If you’ve ever worried about your preschooler’s handwriting skills and whether or not they’ll be able to write their name or their ABCs by kindergarten, let us (a pediatric Occupational Therapist and a former teacher with a Masters in Early Childhood Education) put your mind at ease. You might be shocked to realize that some of the expectations placed on kindergarteners and young learners isn’t actually backed by evidence. This episode will give you insights into how handwriting is actually developed, what underlying skills we should be focusing on and how to start that conversation with your child’s school or teacher.

Susie is a former teacher with a Master's in Early Childhood Education and a mom to 3 kids. She taught kindergarten and first grade for 8 years, and was also a math and reading curriculum specialist for a large school district outside of Seattle. Her mission is to bring hands-on play and learning back to childhood, support others in their parenting journey, and help everyone make it to nap time. Susie’s parenting book “Busy Toddler’s Guide to Actual Parenting” is available on Amazon and she also created Playing Preschool- a homeschool preschool curriculum.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why there’s such a huge discrepancy between natural childhood development and what schools are expecting of early learner
  • Why we shouldn’t force preschoolers to practice handwriting too early
  • What we should be focusing on instead
  • The sequence of underlying skills that need to be mastered before even attempting to form letters
  • When is the right time to start practicing handwriting?

03 Apr 2023The role of OT in a school based setting: unpacking IEPs and 504 plans with Casey Waugh, MS OTR/L00:52:32

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

It's Occupational Therapy month and we are celebrating by highlighting some of the ways you can get OT support for your children. Today we're talking about OT support through the public school system, specifically in the United States. This episode covers basic information about IEP services and 504 plans, how they differ and how to effectively create a support team that has your child's best interests in mind.

Casey Waugh is a pediatric occupational therapist with 11 years of experience in outpatient, early intervention, and school settings. Casey’s passion is to elevate parent confidence through education and advocacy.  Her social media channel OT Time with Casey was created in response to a desire to help fill gaps between professional knowledge and parent knowledge.  Casey has focused her effort on learning and training in the areas of feeding, sensory processing, and special education processes particularly in regard to ADHD and OT in schools. On a personal note, she is a mom of two active and sweet little boys, and the idea of a perfect date night with her hubs is a night on the couch watching The Office with their cats Frank and Beans.

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

In honor of Occupational Therapy month, I’m interviewing Dr. Krupa Playforth to help us understand the challenges parents and doctors face when it comes to referring kids with sensory needs to OT. Dr. Playforth and I will unpack from a parent perspective, therapist and pediatrician perspective and give tips on specific questions to ask/what to say in order to best advocate for OT services with your pediatrician.

Dr Playforth is a board-certified pediatrician (and a mother of 3) who believes every parent deserves clear, evidence-based, nuanced answers to their child health questions. Although social media and the internet are powerful tools, they can also be a mine of misinformation. Using a combination of sincerity, dry humor, and practical tips from her own experience as a mother, she created The Pediatrician Mom - a safe space and resource full of free information for parents on everything from milestones and constipation to ADHD and COVID.  Dr Playforth can be reached at www.thepediatricianmom.com or on social media (@thepediatricianmom).

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What makes someone a “good pediatrician?”
  • How you can rephrase certain questions to get more support from your pediatrician
  • What are some common roadblocks parents run into when trying to advocate for OT services with their pediatrician
  • Questions to ask the pediatrician if they don’t give you a referral to OT right away
  • Strategies, scripts and tips for getting a referral to OT
  • How you can self-refer to OT if you need to.

17 Apr 2023Re-Air: How to make the most of Occupational Therapy Services00:40:44

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Happy OT month! To continue our celebration, I'm re-airing an episode that gives you information on not only accessing OT in the US, but how to leverage and make the most out of the OT services you may already be getting for your child.

Making the most out of your child’s OT services (that you had to fight tooth and nail for, go down very deep internet rabbit holes and stalk the local mom group just to find) is important, but how? In this episode, I’ll be answering common questions I get from parents, like what to do if your child isn’t making progress, how you can ask your OT to support you in non-traditional ways, when it might be time to take a break or pause from OT, and even some signs that you may need to switch therapists.

08 May 2023How to talk to kids about their nervous system00:32:12

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Educating your kids about how their brain and bodies work can be a game changer when it comes to supporting their regulation. When we give them the cheat sheet to how their brain works, they can start to understand why certain things are hard for them, and why they may have certain quirks or behaviors. More importantly, when we educate our kids about how their brain and bodies work, it can give them the language to self advocate with peers or other adults around them and give them the motivation to try the strategies that will support their regulation.

In this episode, I’ll help you start the conversation with your child about their nervous system and how it helps the brain and body communicate with eachother.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • Why it’s important to explain to your child how their brain and body communicate
  • How to explain the body and brain connection to your child

19 Jun 2023Giftedness and Neurodiversity with Caitlin Greer Meister00:51:40

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

One of the big topics I talk about and something i joke will be written on my tomb stone one day is “Sensory is behavior” i’m always trying to reframe the debate “is it sensory or is it behavior?” because everything that we’re noticing our kids do is a behavior, but what parents/teachers want to get to the root of is “is this kid doing this thing on purpose or is it out of their control?”

So what I try to reframe for them is is the behavior being driven by a sensory trigger- OR is it being driven by something ELSE. And that something else can be cognitive disabilities, learning differences, need for connection, communication differences etc- and while I always call those reasons out, I rarely get to dive into those and unpack it, because I heavily talk about all the ways sensory can impact learning. So today we get to hear more of the “other” reasons that behavior might be happening.

Caitlin Greer Meister is the Founding Director & CEO of The Greer Meister Group, a New York City-based private tutoring and educational consulting practice that specializes in content mastery, cognitive flexibility, resilience, and academic independence. She is trained in the Orton-Gillingham approach for teaching students with language-based learning differences and has extensive experience working with gifted learners and supporting neurodiverse students. In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • What a profoundly gifted student is and some early signs you might notice
  • Examples of how you can meet your gifted child’s needs at home and outside the classroom
  • When and how you should advocate with your child’s teacher about their different learning needs
  • Why you should be talking to your child about the way their brain works

22 Jun 2023Kids are ready- a conversation with Jelani Memory, founder and CEO of A Kids Co00:52:21

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

I wanted to create a kids book about neurodiversity not only to help our neurodivergent kids feel seen and represented in a positive light, BUT also to help educate the greater population, the neurotypical population about what neurodiversity means- to foster more inclusion, to take control of the narrative about neurodiversity and change it more from a conversation centered around ableism and make it more about just differences- having a different brain is not bad; it’s just different. My vision is for this book to be on shelves of classrooms, clinics, bedrooms, libraries…. All over the world so we can take the pressure off of making neurodivergent individuals act more neurotypical, and instead create opportunities for neurotypical individuals to learn to accommodate and live alongside neurodivergent individuals just as they are.

In this episode, you’ll learn:

  • When should we talk to kids about these big topics?
  • How to talk to kids about big topics?
  • How books can help start the conversation
  • Why a kids book for neurodiversity is so needed and who it can help and how it can help.

Jelani Memory is the founder and CEO of A Kids Co., a media company that creates books and podcasts to help kids and their grownups have meaningful conversations about things that matter.  He is also the author of the bestselling book A Kids Book About Racism.  Mr. Memory is a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion.  He believes that all kids deserve to see themselves represented in the stories they read and hear, and that books can be a powerful tool for starting important conversations about race, identity, and social justice.  He has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and NPR.  He lives in his hometown Portland, Oregon with his wife and six children.

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Have you ever wondered how to help your child understand or process a certain life event, like when a pet dies, or when a friend moves away?

Or maybe you’ve wondered what’s the best way to prepare your child for something that’s going to happen like moving houses, welcoming a new sibling to the family or even going to the dentist?

Perhaps you’ve needed to find a way to talk about a certain behavior or challenge that keeps coming up, like learning how to share toys with a sibling or how to ask someone to play.

My answer to these are- social stories! And that’s what we’re here to talk about today.

16 Oct 2023Why Is Your Child Acting Out? Uncovering 'The Gap' in Behavior00:20:26

Are you searching for the answers to help stop a certain behavior that keeps coming up for your child? Maybe they’re always hitting or yelling; maybe they are getting notes sent home from school that they’re not paying attention or keeps disrupting class.

Before you can look for solutions to stop the behavior, you need to understand why the behavior is occurring. And the first place to look for the answer to that question is in “the gap”. Listen to this episode to hear how I talk about the “gap where behavior lives”.

You’ll learn:

  • What I mean by “the gap”
  • How to breakdown the demands of a task/environment
  • Why your child doesn’t always have access to the skills they previously had

It all started when a 4th grader at my daughter’s school asked me if I’m neurodivergent after I finished doing a read aloud of my book to their school. And I don’t know why but I stumbled over my words.

I kept thinking about it over and over again that day and then shared it to my stories with a question, am I neurodivergent?

06 Nov 2023Neurodiversity in Society: Embracing Differences for a Better Future (roundtable discussion)01:14:52

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

I recently had an open discussion with my instagram audience on whether or not someone with a clinical diagnosis of anxiety would be considered neurodivergent. This stemmed from an inner conflict I was experiencing and trying to decide– am I neurodivergent?

I actually shared a more in depth view of where I stand on this topic personally and it’s in the previous episode, 88 if you want to go back and listen to that after this.

This question brought up such great conversations in my DMs and I realized how nuanced this topic was, and how much I wanted to bring this discussion to a larger platform and to include different voices on the topic.

So I reached out to some of my most respected peers in this space who all have some personal and professional tie to neurodiversity.

I invited Dr. Cassidy Freitas (LMFT), Andi Putt (speech therapist) and Mr. Chazz (teacher of teachers and parenting coach) to join me for this round table episode.

I asked questions like

  1.  What does the label of neurodivergent/ neurotypical do for people and society
  2. if we classified too many mental health diagnoses as neurodivergent, would that “dilute” the meaning?
  3. If we include mental health diagnoses, it can seem like majority of the population would classify as neurodivergent, what does that mean for a "neurotypical" label if they are in the minority?
  4. Should you tell your child’s teacher about their neurodiversity at the beginning of the school year?
  5. I asked them to weigh in on a thought someone shared with me that said “is anyone really neurotypical?”

Casey shares her personal story of discovering her son's PDA diagnosis and journey to understanding. She discusses PDA as a dysregulated nervous system perceiving threats to autonomy. Casey provides 5 key accommodation strategies for supporting PDA needs, including letting kids win games, using declarative language, strewing for engagement, letting go of demands for "please" and "thank you", and allowing kids to opt out. Laura asks challenging questions and Casey explains how to apply accommodations thoughtfully. Parents will learn practical ways to connect with their PDA kids through an autonomy-focused lens. This episode is invaluable for anyone seeking to understand and support the unique needs of children with Pathological Demand Avoidance.

20 Nov 2023Short, Sweet or Sassy Comeback Responses for Every Judgy Relative00:27:26

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

In this episode, I share my top comebacks for dealing with judgmental comments about parenting a neurodivergent child. As parents, we've all experienced unwanted advice or passive aggressive remarks from friends and family about our parenting style or our child's behavior. But it can be hard to know how to respond without causing conflict.

I'll provide a variety of polite, informative, and sassy responses you can have in your back pocket for common comments like "My parents would never let me get away with that" or "Why don't you just try XYZ intervention?" You'll learn different ways to shut down shaming, set boundaries, and educate others without losing your cool.

Whether you need neutral ways to handle helicopter relatives or spicy one-liners to use on particularly judgmental family members, this episode has the perfect comebacks to empower you to engage effectively while still keeping the peace. I'll also share tips for preventing problems and handling difficult conversations with tact. By the end, you'll feel prepared for any parenting critique this holiday season.

27 Nov 2023The Truth About Labels: Understanding the Pros and Cons00:34:33

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

In this episode, I explore one of the most nuanced topics in parenting - the use of labels for children. As an OT and mom to a sensory sensitive child, I've seen firsthand both the pros and cons that labels can bring. I discuss my own journey in understanding different perspectives on labels and how my views have evolved. Listeners will gain insight into why labels are so meaningful to some, yet controversial to others. I also share strategies for effective advocacy and community-building regardless of stance on labels. My goal is to start respectful conversations that consider multiple truths on this issue. Ultimately, we must challenge stigma at its root by promoting education over assumptions.

18 Dec 2023How to introduce neurodiversity and sensory tools to a general ed classroom00:24:10

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

It’s one thing to be able to identify the best supports, tools and accommodations for your neurodivergent child, but I find that implementing it successfully in the classroom isn’t always easy. One of the things I recommend parents or teachers to do is to spend some time introducing the entire classroom to sensory tools, what they are, who they’re for, and how they help. The idea is to normalize neurodiversity early on, so that when sensory tools or fidgets are being used by an ND student in the classroom, it’s less of a disruption, there’s less stigma and more overall acceptance and awareness that different brains are beautiful!

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Follow along as my husband and I do a quick recap of the 17 days I spent away from home while I was in the Philippines and Mark took on the role of default parent for our daughter Liliana.

We discussed how he handled the daily routines like school drop offs and meals without any reminders from me. Mark shared some funny stories like when he tried taking Lilianato a 4D movie experience that didn't go as planned (IYKYK).

Overall, Mark rose to the challenge and felt more confident in his parenting abilities after having to fully manage everything alone for over two weeks.

Both Mark and I felt this experience strengthened our family dynamic and we are all better for it.

Listen to our previous episode together more on his experience as a neurodivergent parent.

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Listen to this episode if you’re looking for practical next steps after your child receives an autism, ADHD, anxiety or other DSM diagnosis. Listeners will learn how to navigate the many emotions that come with a diagnosis, as I validate the relief, validation but also overwhelmed, confused or worried feelings parents may experience. I recommend taking time to process the diagnosis before making major decisions. Then I outline a step-by-step approach, including re-reading evaluation reports, starting the process for school services if recommended, researching recommended therapies, and focusing research efforts on priority areas during waiting periods for services. My hope is that by laying out this plan, parents will feel less overwhelmed and more empowered to support their child following a diagnosis.

05 Feb 2024Understanding nervous system regulation with Dr. Joy Malik-Hasbrook00:42:28

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Dr. Joy and I chat about why nervous system regulation is so important for parents and kids to understand, and how you can start to explain it to them. We then touch on how you expand the knowledge of nervous system regulation into understanding that some brains and bodies are different, and their nervous system regulation (and finding the green energy) can look different for neurodivergent kids.

Dr. Joy Malik-Hasbrook, PsyD (she/her), is a licensed clinical psychologist who helps children feel seen and grownups heal. She provides regulation and resiliency-based parenting support, specializes in neurodiversity assessments with kids, and presents on nervous system regulation and neurodiversity-affirming assessment. She is a mama of 2, a highly sensitive human, and biracial of South Asian Indian/white descent. She values integrating both Asian contemplative practices and contemporary psychology into her work and is committed to anti-oppressive practices. Dr. Joy understands how challenges with dysregulation create more distress. She believes that understanding nervous system regulation leads to compassion and resiliency and that all families should have access to this information—this book is a start!

12 Feb 2024Making screen time work for your family with Ash Brandin, EdS00:54:53

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Let's normalize screen time use in whatever way works for your family. I know as parents we are CONSTANTLY bombarded by a list of shoulds and shouldn’ts and really big, click-baity headlines that really create a lot of fear and guilt among parents. You see this for almost every childhood concern, but I see it a lot around screens. And in 2024, we’re definitely not decreasing our kids’ exposure to screens so let’s lean into it a bit and really find out- do we really need to stress about limiting screen time? Are there differences between the screentime use our kids are having, and what does this say about neurodivergent kids?

Ash Brandin, EdS (they/them) has been a public school educator for over a decade. In that time they found innovative ways of using student interests- including video games- to increase engagement and make learning more fun and effective. Since February 2021, their Instagram page- TheGamerEducator- has helped tens of thousands of families make screen time beneficial for the whole family. Ash believes screens should be part of our lives, not the center of our lives, and helps caregivers navigate the world of tech using consistent, loving boundaries. In their free time, Ash loves to hike, bake, play video games, and spend time with their family.

19 Feb 2024How to use exercise to regulate your nervous system with Dr. Shannon Ritchey00:44:08

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

We cannot co-regulate our kids if we aren’t regulated ourselves. And most of us (I’m raising both of my hands here) need to make extra effort to activate our parasympathetic nervous system because our sympathetic nervous systems can go into overdrive so quickly as parents to neurodivergent kids. Chronic dysregulation and chronic sympathetic nervous system activation is definitely a THING, our kids can experience, and we can too. And when we’re chronically dysregulated, literally everything in our day just becomes harder, less efficient, and we become crankier, more burnt out, and less able to access the best parenting skills. I put off creating an exercise routine for a long time because I  just wasn’t the most active person and it didn’t motivate me- which I’ll share in the podcast, but trust me when I say- it’s true! It’s true what they say- consistent movement in a way that feels good to your body, that incorporates a good warm up and cool down can do WONDERS for your mental health, and I am truly a better parent and wife now that I have a fitness regime that works for me.

Dr. Shannon is a former physical therapist and the founder of Evlo Fitness. Her mission is to help women get stronger and build muscle with less strain on their bodies. She believes in the power of educating about the physiology of our bodies to create fitness programs that aren’t overly depleting or exhausting.

This episode dives in to:

> A little background on my workout journey

> Why it’s important to NOT skip the cool down in an exercise program

> What is gentle consistency (™) and how can it help you maintain an active lifestyle that works for you

> How to get started with an exercise routine if you feel completely overwhelmed

04 Mar 2024Journey from Referral to Recommendations: what to expect (Tips from a Clinical Psychologist)00:44:18

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Dr. Alex Reed is a clinical psychologist who specializes in the assessment and support of neurodevelopmental diagnoses across the lifespan

Alex and I are both contributors in Dr. Becky’s goodinside community- a movement and platform that we really enjoy supporting. Alex and I have so many sideline conversations about neurodiversity and are constantly sharing resources and posts that speak to our souls— they usually have to do with finding ND affirming care. So I invited Alex on today because she does most of her work within the more traditional DSM-medical model, so she can give us more insight into that lens… but more specifically, I invited her on because she and I have both been hearing about how many parents leave this process-their evaluation, their diagnosis with a referral to therapies they aren’t sure about, or they leave with more questions, or they leave feeling icky.

I’m hoping Alex can peel back some of those layers for us today so we can understand a bit more about the process and the quote unquote system– and more importantly, what’s within our control as parents if we can ONLY access those services through “the system”- what are our options to help our neurodivergent kids thrive as they are?

11 Mar 2024The Nervous System Budget: a new way to think about accommodations for neurodivergent individuals00:15:08

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

I wanted to share a new concept I've been thinking about called the "nervous system budget." Basically, it's a way to visualize how different tasks and environments affect our nervous systems. I'll explain how we all have a limited amount of "nervous system cash" each day, and how certain things can cost more than others.

I'll also give some ideas for how parents can help kids spend less and save more for the things that really matter. My hope is that framing it this way can help parents be more intentional about supporting their kids' regulation.

18 Mar 2024Brainstorming solutions WITH our kids, instead of for them.00:16:07

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

In this episode, I'm exploring an approach I've found really effective called collaborative problem-solving. I'll break down the steps so you can understand the process. And I'll share a real example from my own parenting journey - what happened when I tried validating my daughter's perspective and attacking the problem objectively (minimizing emotions) to find a creative solution that she could agree to? Collaborative problem solving has really shifted our dynamic from a battle of wills to a feeling of partnership.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to live as an undiagnosed Autistic person living in a neurotypical world? Maybe you’re a parent to a nonspeaking child or a child who’s too young to be able to properly express their experience. Learning from actually Autistic adults is one of the most valuable things you can do for your Autistic child and other Autistic individuals in the world, and today, we’re lucky enough to be hearing from one of my favorite Autistic adult creators, Paige Layle.

She just released her memoir, “But Everyone Feels this Way: How an Autism Diagnosis Saved My Life” and we’re diving into it today.

You can buy her book at Target, amazon, or Hachette’s website and I highly recommend it!

Trigger warning: Paige discusses her experience with thoughts of suicide. Please listen at your own discretion, and do not listen with your children around.

Listen to this story to learn more about:

  • Paige’s internal experience with sensory overload in the classroom
  • Her experience of an adult autistic meltdown vs. child autistic meltdown
  • How she made the difficult decision to leave university
  • How she would have benefitted from school accommodations if she were offered them

Dr. Laura Park Figueroa, PhD, OTR/L is a pediatric occupational therapist with over 20 years of experience. She is the founder of Outdoor Kids OT, Inc., a nature-based pediatric practice, and Therapy in the Great Outdoors, LLC, an online hub for nature-based pediatric therapists of all kinds. 27 May 2024Why are restaurants so hard for my neurodivergent child and how can I help them?00:23:39

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Restaurants are a multi-sensory experience, and if you've got a neurodivergent child, you know that multi-sensory doesn't always necessarily mean a good thing. Between the sensory overload, confined space and social expectations of "behaving" in a restaurant, it makes sense why eating out as a family feels stressful for some families. Today I'll peel back the layers and talk about the specific triggers that are contributing to dysregulation, and give strategies to best support your children.  Plus hacks for keeping busy at the table.

03 Jun 2024THC, CBD and Neurodiversity, with Dr. Miyabe Shields Ph.D.00:57:14

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Dr. Miyabe Shields, is a Ph.D. pharmaceutical scientist who specialized in the structural biochemistry of the endocannabinoid system for drug discovery. They have received national and international recognition for their pre-doctoral research in the endocannabinoid system and industrial accomplishments in the cannabis and emerging psychedelics industries.

After co-founding a cannabis research startup post-PhD, they delved into rare extract and formulation research, exploring heat-transformed cannabinoids and developed a novel form of cannabis extraction. Miyabe transitioned to community education and science advocacy through social media and podcasts, reaching over 6 million people.

Shifting away from production-focused roles, they now advocate for the therapeutic benefits of cannabis and psychedelics for neurodivergent brains. They co-founded the Network of Applied Pharmacognosy (NAP), a new research non-profit, to disseminate real-world applications of the synergies of nature by analyzing data and communicating research and educational information to the public.

In this episode, we’ll talk all about the difference between ways to take in cannabis, the different ingredients, and how this can be helpful (or harmful) to various neurotypes. Again, please keep in mind- this is not medical advice. This is just a discussion between 2 neurodivergent adults who happen to use cannabis as a tool in our regulation toolbox, sharing our lived experience and clinical research.

24 Jun 2024Why Is My Child's Behavior Worse When They're Sick?00:21:26

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

If you have a child who’s been sick recently, you’ve probably found yourself wondering “Why are they so moody?” “why do they seem more sensitive than before?”

You’re not imagining it. The nervous system is in a state of stress when it’s fighting viruses, ailments and bugs. Sensory systems are more impacted and so is behavior.

Listen to this episode to feel validated for an experience you might have had recently or a reminder for what to expect next time. Stay till the end to hear my practical tips that I think every neurodivergent parent needs to know when helping their child transition back to “normal life” after an illness.

15 Jul 2024Re-writing the script: Unlearning childhood narratives with Stephanie Pinto00:51:41

What'd you think of the episode? Send me a note!

Calling all millennial parents! Did you grow up hearing things like:

"Because I said so!"
"You're too old to be acting like that!"
"Give your Grandma a hug, don't be rude!"
"If you don't clean up these toys, I'm throwing them away!"
"I told you that would happen! You never listen."

Our parents were doing the best with the information they had-- not to mention, many of them also growing up with the same narrative. Well, in the age of gentle parenting and respectful parenting, our generation is now doing the work to unlearn all of those and go off script as we try to raise a more emotionally intelligent generation. In this episode, Stephanie and I share examples of what it sounds like to set healthy boundaries in a respectful way with your kids.
