A dialogue with Ken Lowry (from his channel) in which we build upon John Vervaeke's 'After Socrates Ep.2: Socrates the monstrous' . Ken is one of my favourite interlocutors and in this dialogue we explore our experiences of christianity and the dynamism of combining socrates and Jesus as 'internalised sages'. We consider the differences between these two sages, Jesus being more 'perfect' and 'up and the clouds' whilst socrates displays a clearly carnal eroticism. We consider how they can both set us free in different ways and might be in dialogue with one another.

A truly wonderful dialogue with rigour, personal story and a journey to the edge of our understanding of trauma, healing and how they intimately shape our worlds.  Matthew and I connected and became friends following a substack I wrote called 'The war of my forefathers'. Prayer is something I've come to practice every day. I never would have thought it a few years ago but it's been a crazy curiosity-led journey. For me prayer is deeply related to dialogue and the practice of meditation--something I've done for many years. In this video, I riff on the relationship between prayer, dialogue, meditation, and listening with the heart. The practice has afforded me repeated redemption in the course of my own inner struggles and a long dark nights of the soul. Sometimes irresolvable struggles can only be resolved through surrender. On the other side of which, can be a surprising peace. However, whether it's found in prayer, psychedelics, or a cold plunge that sense of peace doesn't tend last-it has to be cultivated. 

Prayer, alongside other practices, is about inner-outer cultivation of the heart.  Speaking to this 'matter of the heart', I describe how we all have a little flame inside of us. You may call this by many names, spirit or soul but each of those little flames in us makes up the web of life that holds us through our journey. It's one of the most important things in the human experience. When people have near death experiences and return they consistently say that their love for other people and relationships is the most important thing. It makes sense then that we tend to the flame that we bring to one another and ourselves.

The most profound effects of transformation do not always result from the peak experience or being on the mountaintop but in the coming down and integrating. As we recouple our 'new' self with our existing relationships. To be sure, we're very thankful for the familiarity of and old friend or our parents. But, as we contend with ancestral trauma and stuckness within ourselves, we may become disheartened to percieve everything around us as staying the same. This belief that everything's staying the same is re-enforced by the world around us. However, it is a delusion. Change is happening in historically unprecedented ways at this time and we are all deeply entangled with it and the more than human world. The changes within us affect one another in ways we don't understand. This is an encouraging insight, and we never know the full range of the impact of our internal shifts have everyone we're connected to.   

With that being said, there's a world of struggle waiting for you if you're expecting or needing your family/friends to change in the way you have. I've been there. Perhaps its a necessary learning curve to struggle with this but where I've arived now with experience is recognising that change is happening, but not because we want or need it to. People's life journeys are long. Some karma takes years or decades to be worked out. We cannot force this but we can rest in the knowledge of our entanglement and become better witnesses to one another as we are. We can be open to the transformative potential in one another merely by attending to that person as a thou, as a mystery and not as the fixed object they believe they are. In this attentive witnessing, we paradoxically end up give more affordance to their transformation.

Really Enjoyed this first conversation with Psychology Professor Gregg Henriques. ~I showed up for this dialogue with Joseph after an intense week. It wasn’t my most eloquent but was a deeply insightful and clarifying conversation for me~  

We delved into leadership and masculine warrior energy, exploring what the role of the idea of war, drawing upon its presence in my lineage and my childhood fascination with it. Joseph and I play at imagining a higher order transcendent interpretation of war in service of peace. We work with Jordan Hall’s idea of of ‘Infinitesimal courage’ the ‘war’ we face at the level of minute courageous acts on the home front and day to day. We enter a messy but flowing dialogos in the latter half drawing together courage, vulnerability, healing and war. The dialogue wrapped up with some exploration of John Vervaeke’s 4 ways of knowing, liminal musicality in dialogue and the spirit of logos.

This powerful maxim from O.G Rose has been a way to liberate my creativity and I believe its worthwhile sharing.  Each of us has the capacity to express reality uniquely. Whether it's our creative expression or even the unique way that we give life to an idea we read or heard elsewhere have something unique to contribute.

In our first conversation we explore John’s understanding of the transformational potential of a dialogic relationship with world and self. We play with the ways in which our cognition is not confined to our heads but both embodied and experienced aesthetically. It was great to air and explore some of my ongoing thinking through of Love, Marriage and Sex with Michelle Garner of O.G. Rose who brings to bear her philosophical, christian and personal perspectives. I felt called to convene this upstanding philosophers because they have each wrestled deeply with the question of "Am I Christian?". A question that his come to the fore of my faith journey. I recently read the Ayn Rand’s incredible magnum opus ‘Atlas Shrugged’ which inspired to organise a roundtable discussion. I joined Bethany Tabor in her reading group on the significance of the book and we were also joined by Daniel of O.G. Rose who was deeply struck by the text as a literary philosophy. First published in 1957, Atlas Shrugged is an unfolding story mixing mystery, romance and an exposition of the potential breakdown of American society. This, our first dialogue takes small but significant steps into thinking through an interfaith dialogue with Islam can look like. We explore the intersection of this dialogue with philosophy and the good, true and beautiful. Thomas Jockin brings a studied perspective to the significance of beauty as a bridge between traditions whereas the 'true' and the 'good' are often far too fraught for meditation. Though, as he observes, beauty itself does not arrive instantly it is a relationship which requires cultivation and devotion. In this we begin exploring the transformation that comes from crying and the nuances and dimensions that can be found in crying. We consider what it is to afford deep listening and the experience of contraction that can follow when a relationship space is enframed by trauma. A deeply emergent theme here was the role of dialogos and the shamanic sensibility in helping people find meaning, integrate trauma and break out of the stories that have kept them stuck. Minna Salami aka @msafropolitan is the author of Sensous Knowledge: A Black Feminist Approach for Everyone. In this broad and artful book Minna gives expression to a more expansive approach to knowledge, explores Beauty and re-conceives of Power as ‘Exousiance’. Through insights from the natural world and the embodied, expressive and poetic dimensions she articulates a power through us rather than over others.  

In this conversation we explore why I was drawn to her personal and dialectical approach to the tensions between feminism and the feminine. We consider concerns about a feminism that is grounded in materialism, fragmentation or psychological reaction and Minna articulates what kind of ‘conscious’ or wise feminism is needed to ‘foster a higher dimension of coexistence’. I deeply enjoyed the way that Minna imbues her writing with the richness of her own life and we end by exploring the deep significance for her thought of the patterns that occur throughout nature.

Docta Bionix is a rising rap artist from the U.K. who brings a redemptive message of overcoming trails and bringing inspiration into one of the hardest hitting, most oppositional rap genres: drill. I was fascinated to interview Docta Bionix because of the unusual depth of his message. I became aware of his rise early on because of his deep collaboration with producer and engineer Badio in Bournemouth, U.K. (prodbybadio) who was also instrumental in my musical start. We dive into the impact of music on culture and the responsibility of artists. Docta Bionix background stems from hiphop and rap which later led to his involvement in pirate radio stations as an MC. I catch up with Philosopher-Sage Guy Sengstock for a broad enquiry into what it means to listen deeply to world. We discuss Carl Jung’s unconscious and psychedelic reality. Building on this we consider the very different ways in which texts reveal themselves and what it means for our reading to be guided by intuition. We enter the mystifying territory of what it means to listen deeply to world and logos, what is the 'veil' and what calls forth the salience that guides and shapes our lives. 

 In the second half we explore the mechanisms by which trauma shapes our perception and calls forth re-enactment of patterns in our lives. Introducing ideas from my enquiry into the ‘landscape of trauma’ we talk about what trauma reveals about the fundamentals of temporality and how loving relationships can break us free of traumatic cycles.

A delightful conversation with John Vervaeke who has worked deeply both in and out of the academy to understand and respond to 'the meaning crisis' through the art of dialectic. In  our conversation we explore why this practice can be a fountainhead of meaningfulness, insight and intimacy that confounds nihilism.  Vervaeke argues that when debate has broken down we must move into the unknown terrain of dialectic to rebuild trust, wonder and 'higher order truths'. Alexander Beiner is the co-founder of Rebel Wisdom where he is responsible for live events, summits and facilitation of retreats and workshops. Previously a novelist, meditation instructor and co-organiser of the psychedelics conference Breaking Convention he is currently writing long form pieces exploring Embodied Cognition, Culture and how a deeper Mytho-Poetic understanding can guide us through a time between worlds.

An interview with my dad Gaz Kishere, a former minister who was involved in the church for 15 years and has since undergone a journey of deconstruction. Today he works professionally as a counsellor, helping others find continued journey and spiritual relationship beyond church. He’s worked for the last 8 years supporting counter-trafficking and refugee projects in Athens Greece, as well as counselling burnt-out humanitarian workers. We explore church’s relationship to rescuer culture and outreach. The 1990’s Toronto awakening. The relationship of the church to disruption and dynamic change.
