15 Feb 2023Retake 9: Notorious00:14:26

In this week’s retake we look at episode 72 - where I share the introduction and epilogue to ‘Notorious’, my autobiography. From being the story, to now telling the story.

My own narrative, as many listeners will know, is not just about the dark challenges of injustice and the dehumanisation of what is experienced in prison. It’s a reflection on my weaknesses, education and self development that helped me find the ways in which I could keep going against all the odds.

The overlap between my life experience and the work I do today, as a journalist, can have a profound effect. One reflection in the book encapsulates what I mean. It’s about the encounter I had during filming the Netflix series ‘Inside The World’s Toughest Prisons. In the very first episode we filmed inside a Brazilian penitentiary. At one point I was asked by a group of young prisoners if I thought about killing myself after being imprisoned for the crimes I did not commit. My answer was No. In fact, I told them, the injustice I felt manifested in me the man I am today. This encounter caused quite a stir for them and had a ripple effect with people around the world who have found themselves in dark places. Notorious, my book, has given so many the strength to fight their own or others' justice.

The story is still being told and I am determined to continue to change the narrative about prisoners. Thank you for listening. I cannot do this alone and I thank and recognise each one of you who has been a part of my journey so far, and for those of you who are reaching out to me every day to help in any way you can. Thank you for your support.

You can purchase a personalised signed copy of my book on my website at raphael-rowe.com. It is also available to order on Amazon and many other book outlets.

01 Mar 202316 years in prison for crimes he did not commit: Jeffrey Deskovic01:13:00

After being convicted of the rape and murder of a high school classmate at just 17 years old, Jeffrey Deskovic spent 16 long years in prison. However, DNA testing proved his innocence and led to the conviction of the real culprit, who was already incarcerated for another murder.

While this revelation may bring some peace to the victim, Angela Correa, and her loved ones, Deskovic's nightmare was far from over. In this interview, he shares his experience and how it motivated him to establish the Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to advocating for wrongly convicted prisoners and reforming the American criminal justice system.

Deskovic's experience is not unique, and there are countless others who have been wrongfully convicted and continue to suffer as a result. His foundation works to provide support and resources to these individuals and their families, while also working to reform the criminal justice system.

Through his advocacy work, Deskovic is helping to raise awareness about the flaws and biases that exist within the system, and is pushing for meaningful change that will prevent others from experiencing the same injustice he did.

22 Mar 2023Rape Lies Destroyed My Life - Jordan Trengove00:47:35

Jordan Trengove's life turned upside down after sharing his partying activity on Snapchat, which led to a girl named Ellie joining him and his friends. The post changed his life forever. Ellie, whose real name was Eleanor Williams, made false allegations against Jordan, accusing him of Rape, GBH and other crimes. This led to Jordan's imprisonment, where his mental health deteriorated. Eleanor went on to accuse five more innocent men of crimes such as rape, grooming and human trafficking. Her lies were eventually exposed, and she was found guilty of perverting the course of justice. She was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison.

Jordan speaks about the experience of rebuilding his life after this traumatic event, regaining his trust in women, and how the events unfolded.

The story of Jordan Trengove's experience serves as a powerful reminder of the impact of false accusations and the importance of resilience in the face of trauma. Through his journey of rebuilding, Jordan was able to find strength and purpose in advocating for the rights of those who have suffered similar injustices.

This story highlights the importance of creating spaces that promote healing and restoration. It is crucial to provide safe and comfortable environments that support mental health and wellbeing. Through thoughtful interventions, we can facilitate the process of rebuilding and empower individuals to move forward with their lives.

28 Mar 2023Oxford Bullfinch Sex Abuse Ring -Girl 100:39:05

Girl 1 has been given lifelong anonymity and so we can’t reveal her true identity.

She was one of a number of victims in the highly publicised Oxford Bullfinch case. She has chosen to share her story now to help other young people who may be in a similar situation. Police and social services let her down more than once and she is still picking up the pieces.

She talks to me about her own dysfunctional childhood and how she ended up in care homes from the age of twelve years old. How the care system was not an easy journey,  and why she looked for love and attention in all the wrong places, which was when she met the men that abused her.

For 3 years she was trapped, punished physically, mentally, and emotionally. The seven men convicted for crimes against her, and the abuse of many other girls, were given long prison sentences, including life.

But years on, and girl 1 is still looking for answers from the police and authorities she says let her down.

Our guest this week on Second Chance is Leiona Townsend, whose vibrant personality shines through as she shares her experiences with us. Leiona provides her unique perspective on the Heathrow Drug gang scandal, in which baggage handlers smuggled £32 million worth of cocaine into the UK. It's clear that her past does not define her, and she is now an advocate for helping those in prison today.

04 Jul 2023 Killer to Entrepreneur: The Power of Transformation - Quan Huynh00:59:27

It may seem unlikely, but many successful entrepreneurs have come from difficult backgrounds and turned their lives around. With the right mindset, perseverance, and willingness to learn new skills, anyone can transform their life and create a successful business. Take the story of Quan Huynh, for example. In 1999, he shot and killed another man in Hollywood in a gang-related incident and spent 22 years in prison. However, upon his release in 2015, he channelled his drive and determination into something positive, setting up his own business, Defy Ventures. He even received the Peace Fellowship Award for his work with the Alternatives to Violence Project, helping others to heal and find purpose.

Journaling is a powerful tool that Huynh used to understand himself, his past, and create a new future. His writings in prison led him to author the book, Sparrow in the Razor Wire, and actively shift the narrative of what it truly means to be a former offender. In this episode, he shares what it was like to be behind bars and how he found freedom within to keep bouncing back from even his tenth chance at life!

17 Oct 2023The UK's "Post Office Scandal" - Jo Hamilton00:58:53

For the past twenty years, the UK has been grappling with the aftermath of the notorious "Post Office scandal," which has affected countless innocent individuals. In 2000, the Horizon IT system was introduced to modernise the Post Office network, but its rollout led to a barrage of wrongful convictions for fraud, theft, and false accounting. Despite technological advancements in digital payments and optimised accounting, the system frequently flagged accounting discrepancies due to bugs and errors, resulting in harsh punitive measures taken against subpostmasters and staff. Consequently, thousands of innocent people lost their jobs, homes, and freedom.

The Post Office and its lawyers attempted to cover up the scandal by withholding crucial information about Horizon in court cases, leaving many of the victims without justice or compensation.

Recently, the Court of Appeal overturned the wrongful convictions of many former subpostmasters, stating that the Post Office should not have initiated the prosecutions.

Jo Hamilton, a former sub-postmistress from Hampshire, joined me on this episode to share her story of how the scandal affected her. She was accused of stealing £36,000 from her branch and pleaded guilty to false accounting in 2008 out of fear of imprisonment.

It took years for her to clear her name, and in the meantime, she had to mortgage her house and borrow money from friends. What she didn’t know at the time was the fact that the Post Office investigators had evidence indicating that she had never stolen any money but hid it from her defence.

This scandal underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and ethical behaviour, particularly with those we ought to trust the most.

24 Oct 2023Captive in Iran's Evin Prison - Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert01:07:54

Dr Kylie Moore-Gilbert, a British-Australian academic, endured 804 days as a rebellious hostage of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while being accused of being an agent for Mossad, MI6, or a spy for Australia. She was imprisoned in the infamous Evin prison, where she was kept in isolation from the outside world and subjected to relentless interrogations. Despite being told repeatedly that she would be forgotten, Kylie refused to confess and rejected the ever-changing accusations. The Australian government dismissed the charges as baseless, but she was convicted by "the hanging judge" of Iran, and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

After a year in solitary confinement, Kylie was suddenly transferred to Qarchak, known as the world's worst women's prison, located on the outskirts of Tehran. Although no evidence was ever presented to support the charges against her, she was subjected to the harshest of conditions.

Finally, after a complicated prisoner swap involving four countries, Kylie regained her freedom. In this interview and her book "Uncaged Sky: My 804 Days in an Iranian Prison," she shares the story of her harrowing experience and how she overcame it.

You can also listen to my interview with Kylie on my audio book 'You Are Accused', available on Audible. Click the link in the description or search for 'You are Accused' by Raphael Rowe to get your copy.

01 Nov 2023The Mastermind Behind Two Notorious Manhunts - Colin Sutton00:33:24

Colin Sutton, a former police detective, is celebrated for his instrumental role in the capture of two of the UK's most notorious criminals. Levy Bellfield, a serial killer, and Delroy Grant, a serial rapist, were both caught thanks to his exceptional efforts. The BAFTA-nominated ITV drama "Manhunt" was inspired by the successful investigations led by Sutton. With over three decades of experience and a record of solving over 30 murder cases, Sutton is a seasoned detective with a remarkable track record. His involvement in these two high-profile cases, however, brought him widespread recognition. In "Manhunt," DCI Sutton is portrayed by Martin Clunes as the lead investigator who brought both criminals to justice. Sutton's book "Manhunt" provides a comprehensive insight into his methods and strategies. I had the pleasure of meeting Colin earlier this year at Crimecon, where we discussed his exceptional work as a detective in front of a live audience. We also talked about the challenges and fame that came with his exceptional career, as well as the second chance he gave to the victims of the crimes he helped solve.

08 Nov 2023Student Accused of Rape That Never Happened - Liam Allan01:06:34

The collapsed trial of Liam Allan reveals a widespread problem in the legal system, which criminal defence lawyers have been warning about for some time. Liam was accused of rape and sexual assault, but his defense was that any sexual contact between himself and his former girlfriend was consensual. The Prosecution's case relied heavily on the ex girlfriends account, which is a common situation in sexual assault allegations that often occur in private settings without any independent witnesses.

It took two years from Liam’s arrest for his trial to proceed in the Crown Court. Prior to the trial, his lawyers had repeatedly asked the Prosecution to disclose text and social media messages between Liam and his ex girlfriend from her phone. Despite clear guidelines on disclosure, the officer in charge of the case failed to hand over this potentially useful information to the defence team. It wasn't until the trial started that this material was brought to the attention of the Prosecuting barrister, who ordered it to be handed over immediately. The messages cleared Liam of all charges. His ex girlfriend and accuser had messaged him asking for sexual contact and spoke of a desire for violent sex and rape fantasies. In other messages to friends, she stated that no crime had been committed.

To their credit, the Crown dropped the case as soon as he became aware of this material. It also made a public statement acknowledging "a very serious miscarriage of justice" had only narrowly been avoided.

You can also listen to my interview with Liam on my audio book 'You Are Accused', available on Audible. Click the link in the description or search for 'You are Accused' by Raphael Rowe to get your copy.

22 Nov 2023Celebrity Reputation Risk - James Modley01:11:13

In today's world, where news travels quickly and public scrutiny is constant, safeguarding a celebrity's image is no easy task. Even minor missteps can have a significant impact on their reputation, particularly with the rise of social media. Therefore, it's essential to have a skilled and experienced legal representative who can handle reputation risks and navigate the complexities of reputation management.

Repairing the damage to a celebrity's image can be challenging once the harm has already been done. High-profile cases, such as those involving Russell Brand, Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy, actor Noel Clarke, and other high-profile stories like Philip Schofield, are just some of the examples where managing and repairing the harm caused to a celebrity's image can be extremely challenging.

In this episode, I spoke with James Modley, a proficient commercial litigator who specialises in complex cases involving reputation risks and suspected fraud. With years of experience in handling high-profile cases, James is the go-to expert for celebrities and corporations who need help managing their image. He ensures that his clients' best interests are always protected, while also trying to manage public perception of their image whether they are guilty or not.

You can also listen to my interview with James on my audio book 'You Are Accused', available on Audible. Click the link in the description or search for 'You are Accused' by Raphael Rowe to get your copy.

06 Dec 2023Criminal - Angela Kirwin01:01:01

Angela Kirwin spent over a decade working in some of the most notorious prisons in Britain, where she documented her experiences and the stories of the men she met in her book "Criminal."

On this podcast Angela told me the current prison system is failing the most vulnerable members of our society, as she discovered while working inside prisons. She believes that prison is not a separate world, but rather a place where the most damaged and vulnerable people in our society end up. Not only is the system ineffective, but it also contributes to habitual criminality, making society less safe and less humane. It is, she says, high time that governments take notice of this issue and implement steps to improve the situation.

10 Jan 2024Drug Lord to Celebrated Artist - Stephen Mee01:17:14

The fascinating life of former drug lord Stephen Mee really is what dramatised movies try to replicate. Originally from Northern Manchester, Stephen faced many challenges throughout his upbringing, including personal loss and family struggles. Despite discovering his artistic talent early on, he also became involved in a life of crime. It culminated in 1996, when he was given 30 years for importing class 'A' drugs. His stories about his involvement in the trafficking of millions of pounds and hundreds of kilos of cocaine with Turkish, Albanian, and Colombian crime groups beggars belief. Stephen served sixteen and a half years in prison. His life took a turn during his time in prison, where he pursued his passion for fine arts, leading to a transformative experience. He has now established himself as a professional artist, drawing inspiration from both his past and present experiences.

16 Feb 202228 years in prison protesting my innocence - Darnell Phillips00:57:06

In 1991, Darnell Philips was 19 years old when he was sentenced to 100 years in prison for raping and brutally beating a 10-year-old girl in Virginia Beach, in the USA.  In 2015, the Innocence Project based at the University of Virginia, found, and had tested, new DNA evidence that they say proves he was not at the scene of the crime. This crucial development led to Darnell being freed from prison, on parole, in 2018,  after serving 28 years in prison. Darnell, now 50, has always insisted on his innocence, but his conviction has still not been overturned. This is due to a legal procedure in the law courts that lawyers believe a groundbreaking new law will remove, allowing Darnell  to finally prove his innocence

Raphael is in conversation with associate professor David Skarbek, author of The Puzzle of Prison Order: Why Life Behind Bars Varies Around the World. An illuminating work of much interest to students of crime and punishment. Skarbek’s book digs behind the scenes of global prisons, studying the balance of power and hierarchy behind bars and how that affects prisoners. 09 Mar 2022Wicked N' Bad - Myles Harris01:10:00

Myles Harris, aka Bouncer is a content creator, sports and boxing promoter and an entrepreneur who served time in prison for robbery and drug offences. He plays on his past reputation naming sports management company ‘Wicked N Bad’. Myles’s journey to success was, like many poor and marginalised families' from inner city council estates, difficult and challenging. That’s not an excuse, it’s a reality, but as he advocates, it shouldn’t stop you wanting more, or becoming more, than the defined negative stereotype often portrayed.

30 Mar 2022Stopping Ex-Prisoners Reoffending - Lilly Waters01:08:11

Britain’s high reoffending rate costs taxpayers around £15bn a year. Very little of taxpayers money is spent on the important work that volunteers like Lilly do to assist prisoners reintegrate back into society. As a result 60% of released inmates go on to reoffend within a two-year period. Prisons seclude criminals from the rest of society and so naturally ex-offenders find it difficult to readjust to normal life once they get out and find it difficult to reintegrate into society. Lack of job opportunities, and difficulties finding accommodation are just two of the challenges former prisoners face and it is a cause of why many drift back to crime.

11 Oct 2022LGBTQ & Revenge Porn Activist - Chrissy Chambers00:56:44

Chrissy Chambers was the victim of revenge porn and chose to speak out to prevent others going through the trauma she experienced being publicly exposed on social media. When Chrissy broke off her relationship with an ex boyfriend he became revengeful and induced her with alcohol before secretly filming himself having sex with her.  He posted the videos on at least 30 porn websites which is when Chrissy first learned what had happened. During her fight to have the videos removed she suffered from sleep paralysis, alcoholism, depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. At the time of her case, there were no laws that said revenge porn was illegal. Chambers set out to change this so other people who found themselves in this situation would not get turned away from law enforcement like she did.

18 Oct 2022Multi Millionaire to Federal Prisoner - John Lefebvre01:15:46

In the late nineties, John Lefebvre was approaching middle age and living out an unpromising legal career in Calgary, Canada. Then he jumped on board a dot-com start-up as a founder of Neteller. As companies fortunes rose along with those of the online gambling industry, the pay-off for Lefebvre and his partners would be astronomical. But it didn’t come without a price.

The firm's involvement in transactions serving the online gambling industry led to charges of money laundering, racketeering, running an unlicensed money transmitting business and promoting illegal gambling. Lefebvre was charged in connection with the creation and operation of an Internet payment services company that facilitated the transfer of billions of dollars of illegal gambling proceeds from U.S. citizens to the owners of overseas internet gambling companies.

He pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to promote illegal internet gambling transactions and served 45 days in Federal Prison.

04 Jan 2023Retake 5: ‘Give Yourself a Second Chance’00:12:36

In this retake 5 we go back to the beginning, all the way to episode 2, to explore what does Second Chance mean. Lordia Lewis-Spencer, a Lead Psychotherapist from Protea Psychotherapy Practise and Christopher Hickin, Assistant Director from Remedi who provide restorative justice services. Externally we are looking for a Second Chance, but really it comes with Self as Human Beings. To become better versions of ourselves, we must give ourselves a Second Chance.

Lordia explains how self-actualization is a direction not a destination. A genuine lived Second Chance stems from forgiveness and taking personal power of that change! Chris delves into a particular case of how even, a one punch killer, found hope to turn his life around from his victim’s parents! You can find the inspiration to change from the people you least expect it from. Can you accept a Second Chance?

Environmental issues are also a key factor to this and is a massive part of true change, committing to living out your Second Chance daily.

It comes down to choosing to being a better version of yourself,

For example, in the films such as ‘Shawshank Redemption’ to ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’. You choose to forgive, for yourself, both individually and collectively we have the power to change, it is a choice.

14 Oct 2020One Killer Punch00:46:45

The woman I spoke to in this episode doesn’t want to reveal her true identity. So we agreed that I would call her Racheal. Racheal describes the moment her son was killed by a stranger with one punch. The unprovoked attack led to one man losing his life and another being sent to prison. This is not gang related; the result of an argument or a premeditated attack. It is a tragic tale shared by a mother, who despite losing her son, believes the man responsible can stop the cycle of violence that infected his life spreading to his child and others.

28 Oct 2020Unsolved Murder of Jill Dando and The Sister of the Wrongly Accused, Michelle Diskin.01:00:14

On the morning of 26 April 1999, Jill Dando, an English journalist, television presenter and newsreader, was shot dead outside her home in London. It prompted the biggest murder inquiry conducted by the Metropolitan Police and the country's largest criminal investigation since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. A year later a local disabled man, Barry George, was arrested and later convicted and imprisoned for the murder. Eight years later, following a successful appeal against his original conviction, he was retried and acquitted. The case remains unsolved.

Michelle Diskin is the sister of Barry George. She campaigned tirelessly to prove her brother's innocence. Here she talks about what it is like to a relative caught in a high profile murder case of this kind and what it took from her and others to challenge the British Criminal Justice System.

09 Dec 2020The Green Wall00:56:34

DJ Vodicka worked as a correctional officer in the state of California, in the USA.  For sixteen years he was a prison guard in the highest security prisons, serving meals to gang leaders, serial killers in lockdown cells, and patrolling exercise yards filled with violent felons while unarmed and outnumbered 1000-to-2. He belonged to an elite unit called the Investigative Services Unit, responsible for solving horrific crimes inside the walls. He became a whistle-blower when he uncovered a group of rogue prison guards who called themselves, The Green Wall. His state senate testimony exposed a scandal that led to resignations, transfers, sudden retirements, and reforms of the system. The story is a classic tale of the triumph of personal integrity in the most dishonest place imaginable.

16 Dec 2020Legalising Cannabis00:52:57

Cannabis, or weed as it is widely known, is freely available to order online for delivery in some states of America. This decriminalisation and legalisation of cannabis, although in conflict with Federal laws, has generated a trade now worth millions of dollars for CEO’s importing or growing their own weed in places like California, Colorado and Alaska.

But not everyone is in high spirits about the state of play.  Evelyn Lachapelle served five years, from a 7 year prison sentence, for illegally laundering money generated from cannabis trafficking, before it became legal.  She now campaigns for the sentences of over 40,000 prisoners, convicted and imprisoned for cannabis crimes, to be overturned now that the law has changed.

06 Jan 2021From Crime Boss to Dangerous Prisoner to Humanitarian00:56:33

Stephen Gillen was once described as an organised crime boss and one of Britain's most dangerous prisoners. After serving a number of lengthy prison sentences  he embarks on a life changing journey. One that benefits him and others. As a dangerous prisoner he spent years in and out of secure units - inside maximum security prisons. However, Stephen Gillen is no exception to the vast number of prisoners who turn their lives around after crime and punishment - but his story is a compelling testimony as to why we should never write people off because of their past.

03 Feb 2021Wolf of Wall Street00:49:18
The wolf of wall street movie portrayed crooked financial traders in a way that you either loved them or hated them. My guest today was in the thick of those characters in real life.  He stole millions to finance a luxurious lifestyle that lasted many years. This man had it all, but he lived with a guilt that led him to give it all away before he was arrested and imprisoned. The private jets, lamborghinis, priceless art and luxury homes were replaced with a prison cell. A White collar criminal is often depicted as different from the common drug dealer or thief but they all have one thing in common, a criminal  record.

17 Feb 2021You - The listener : Special Edition00:36:51

In this episode I wanted to ask you - the listener - what you think about the concept and the reality of a second chance?

In previous episodes we’ve listened to stories from individuals who have come back from the brink of death, criminals who have made good after serving lengthy prison sentences and victims that have not allowed the crime against them to define who they are.

The podcast has also given a voice to the voiceless, and by that I mean individuals who want their side of a story told or just their stories told.

I really wanted to know what you think and so I posted a message on social media asking you to share your thoughts. What follows is a selection of your responses and my
comments.

24 Feb 2021A Prostitutes Tale of Survival00:53:03

WARNING: This episode contains descriptions of drug abuse and sexual violence which may may be upsetting for some listeners.

The story you are about to hear on this episode is the struggles of a young middle class woman who felt ostracised by her peers, and so became a sex worker and drug addict.  As a street worker she was viciously attacked by a punter - and seen as less than a victim by the police. Victoria, my guess today, has transformed her life and recently witnessed her attacker convicted and imprisoned not just for the crime he committed against her but also others. Her past has become her strength and she contacted me, by way of a very long email letter and then agreed to share her story, a story that is not only candid but also revealing.

03 Mar 2021Overcoming A Mental Health Condition & Eating Disorder00:46:41

Bulimia nervosa, an eating disorder and mental health condition is a serious, potentially life-threatening disorder characterized by a cycle of binge eating and self vomiting. It’s not a condition you manage yourself, as Courtney my guest will explain. It is a psychological and physical challenge that can be beaten over time. I hope this story of a resilient young woman will empower others who may be facing a similar battle. The balance between finding your own way and seeking the help and guidance from others may at times feel like a tightrope, but as you steady yourself and keep on moving, you will, as Courtney did, find the courage to push forward from the past to enjoy the future.

18 May 2021Knife Crime Victim - Stuart Newton00:58:30
Although knife crime remains a serious issue, incidents are falling here in the UK. That is, to some extent, to do with those who share their experience. Stuart Newton is one of those individuals. He was brought back to life from the brink of death after being stabbed numerous times in an unprovoked knife attack. He wants people to know what it feels like to be stabbed, and how it affects a victim. Knife crime is committed by the young and old. It affects people from black, white and asian and ethnic communities. It happens to the rich and poor. It is not a social class issue. And stories like Stuarts need to be shared in an attempt to prevent others becoming victims or perpetrators.

22 Jun 2021The Metropolitan Police Chief Inspector - Jack Rowlands01:23:15

Once upon a time, when I was a teenager I wouldn't give a police officer the time of day. Now, things have changed and I find myself supporting one of their initiatives that is aimed at diverting young adults away from a life of violence and crime. Speaking with Chief Inspector Jack Rowlands of the Metropolitan Police on my podcast about his project Divert is insightful and groundbreaking. He is a man who wants to give people a second chance in life from the moment they find themselves in a police cell in police stations across London. The early intervention programme he talks about can be a real game changer for those who make mistakes and end up on the wrong side of the law. It’s also a project that I believe should be available in every police station across the country as well as the globe.
