By God's wonderful design, much good is brought out of the distress and confusion caused by heresies which rear up and repeat in the life of the Church. Confronting these lies with the reality revealed by Christ, heresy serves to purify doctrine, so that the splendour of truth shines ever more brightly against the deepening backdrop of darkness. Though heresy is painful to confront, the lasting result is a stronger, more mature Church.

Samson shows us that the defeat of Christ’s enemies is certain. Striking aspects of the birth, life and death of Samson all point to Jesus Christ. By his death, with his arms stretched out, Samson brought down the Temple of the wicked and all those who worshipped in it.

The Bible tells us that Samson: "killed many more in his death than he had killed before in his life." (Jdg 16:25). This is a reverse prefiguration of Jesus, Who by His Passion & Death healed and saved many more than He had healed and saved in His life.

The battle between good and evil waged through all history is symbolised by Moses up on the hill while Joshua fights it out on the battlefield (Ex 17). These two represent Jesus Christ up in Heaven and simultaneously here on earth, among us, leading the Church Militant.

Aaron and Hur upholding Moses' weary arms represent Church and State faithfully confessing Christ, that is upholding the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass -- symbolised by Moses' outstretched arms as Christ crucified. The battle ebbs and flows, has ups and downs. It is pressing hard against us now, but thanks to the great stone upon which Moses leant, the victory for good is sure. That rock is Christ -- and our altar in Holy Mass.

We can learn much of the Virgin Mary's superlative spirit from the Old Testament. Some complain that the Old Testament is too bloody, too violent, too strange for their taste. Is the Mother of God to be likened to a hammer-wielding combatant (Jael)? Is Our Lady to be compared to a rock-hurling warrior (from Thebez)? Is the Virgin Mary akin to one who gives the green light for assassination (in Abel)? Is Our Lady of Sorrows related to one who decapitates a comatose man with his sword (Judith)?
