Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com. Corrections: From Gene Davis - The new Firebird kit is ⅛ scale, not 1/12. Gene has the FB page devoted to this kit and some new modifications. Quinta Studios is based in Russia, not Ukraine. *************************************** LATEST HOBBY ANNOUNCEMENTS A new "Nose Art" kit of the 32nd scale Lancaster from Border Models Meng's Wild Weasel F4G in 1/48 More details of Takom's Apache surfaces Special Hobby and CMK Kits for October 1/72 Scale Dean Fender Destroido - Return2Kit Form SAAB LX Swedish Jet Interceptor Concept (1941) Upcoming 1:72 Vega Shuttle kit Great Wall Hobbies releasing a new A-10 kit. *************************************** SPONSOR AD #1 *************************************** Interview This Episode’s Special Guest: *************************************** WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart - A bit of working getting the fuselage closed up on the 1/72 Arma Hurricane and weathering about to being start on a Tomahawk. Geoff - still plugging away on the Hobbycraft 1/32 P51B Mustang. I finally put some pictures and descriptions of the Moosearoo Cup build onto the podcast Facebook group, as I saw that some others had done so. Great response and I noticed today that even Arma Hobbies - who makes the kit - picked up our post. Nice to see. Otherwise, a lot of my time has been spent on refurbishing a 55 year old wood lathe that I acquired. Let the chips fly! Terry - Getting some bench time in. Now painting the Dora Wings P-43, looking pretty good. I should get to gloss coating this weekend. The Halberd Models Turbo Cavalier is getting close to paint as well. I’m pretty happy with the primer and am now getting the canopy on. The cockpit received some updating to make it a late 90s or 2000s era chase plane. *************************************** SPONSOR AD #2 *************************************** THINGS WE’VE SEEN Above and Below Graphics are back RMS Olympic serving as a troop transport during World War I. *************************************** THE LAST WORD SMP Ep.102 is also sponsored by Return To Kit Form (R2KF). 23 Oct 2022 | The Scale Model Podcast - EP 103 - Back to the Future
Welcome to Episode 103 Sponsored by CultTVMan, Sean’s Custom Model Tools and Return To Kit Form Hosts Stuart Clark Geoff Heyland Terry Miesle *************************************** LATEST NEWS FineScale Modeler (FSM) announces that November is Build a Model Month (BAMM). *************************************** MAILBAG Nemo Fisher in Thailand says he enjoys building models, but they’re just not available in Thailand. Everything would be foreign mail order, which is prohibitively expensive. We sympathize, Nemo. We’re lucky to live somewhere with Brick-and-Mortar and good mail-order options. We want to hear from you! Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com. *************************************** LATEST HOBBY ANNOUNCEMENTS Border Models announces a 1/35 Fw 190A6 Takom's 350th Horizon class Destroyers, the Andrea Doria & Caio Duilio B-25J Mitchell "Glazed Nose" from Hong Kong Models 1/48th scale "Hands on" review: "Armour Range" Stencil Paint Masks from 1ManArmy in 1/35th Special Hobby SH72152 Fairey Albacore Mk.I/II in 1/72 spru shots Other Special Hobby announcements. KLP latest, Building the Airfix F6F-5 Hellcat in 1/24 Scale October Announcements from Pit Road *************************************** SPONSOR AD #1 *************************************** Topic The next 20 years in the hobby Random notes to discuss. Trends in the hobby? Rise of 3D printers, need for tech skills? How are new modelers (Kids and adults) being engaged? Gundams were just making an appearance in North America 20 years ago, the market now is huge. Nostalgia is playing a larger part in the hobby. Aging out? Whose nostalgia? Changes by generation… Better experience for first-time builders - easier and more satisfying kits. This has greatly improved in the past 20 years, multi-color plastic, good snap-fit, much better detail etc Rise of CAD and computer design. I don’t think the future was even predictable at that point, with the rise of affordable scanning and computer power. Dave Metzner with Polar Lights really nailed the SF and fantasy market demand. *************************************** SPONSOR AD #2 *************************************** WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart More weathering done on the Tomahawk, but I feel still needs some more. Putting it aside, for now, to focus on getting the Arma 1/72 Hurricane done. Tailplanes put on and getting smaller parts ready for painting. I think I’ve got the scheme I’m going to use. Geoff - working on finishing the Hobbycraft 1/32 P51A Mustang in a one-off “dazzle” camouflage scheme from 1943/44. It’s a skill building project and not a super detail project, so the focus is on masking, finishing and weathering. Terry - solid work done on the P-43 and Cavalier. The Cavalier white coat might be good enough to start gloss clear. The P-43 is ready for decals. Wish me luck! Starting cleanup on Moscato’s Dragunn. *************************************** THINGS WE’VE SEEN Geoff - visited the RCAF Museum in Trenton, Ontario last week. Not a huge museum, but we’ll done and very good docents with lots of information. If you are modelling a Halifax, they have one fully restored (non flyable). Terry - Went to the Iron Maiden show in Columbus, and saw the 1:1 Spitfire prop! Also, received the Mitsubishi Babs book. Stuart - Guillow kits at Goodwill this week, got a Spitfire and a Ruff, got a Spitfire for Geoff Warplane Museum has some new aircraft *************************************** THE LAST WORD SMP Ep. 103 is also sponsored by Return To Kit Form (R2KF). Geoff - focused on finishing the construction of a new guest room/sewing room for my wife, so not much time on the bench. Picking away at finishing the Bachem Natter. Also getting back to the CL52! Chris - Recently finished the massive Revell SR-71. No regrets! Aside from some tedious filling and re-scribing around the nacelles, it went well. My review is at: http://modelairplanemaker.com/2022/11/10/1-48-revell-sr-71-blackbird-americas-middle-finger/ and my painting video is at https://youtu.be/zNuUQ2o0vfg. Next up is the Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair for the Group Build starting December 1: Terry - Finishing up the Dora Wings P-43 and Cavalier Mustang. Now I’m just waiting on a brass pitot for the Mustang, then they’re done! The Christmas birds are essentially done, I did start building the Bandai V-33 Stork mech carrier to do a quick paint job but have been convinced to do a very challenging paint scheme, for which I’ve cut some vinyl masks. So…holiday time maybe? Pacific group build choices are two Mitshubishi C5M2 “Babs” aircraft. The sewer line was repaired, the leaking shower was repaired, which needs to be replaced, and solar panels were installed, Kiowa departed and missed. ☹️ *************************************** THINGS WE’VE SEEN Click2Detail parts for several items, notably B-52s and Space Shuttles. 3D printed parts. Next up is another clear coat in preparation for panel lines and weathering. I also started work on an Arma Hobbies 1/72 Hurricane. Interior green has been painted and cockpit assembly started. Geoff - I acquired a partially built 1/32 Trumpeter F4U-4 Corsair from the estate of club member Don Van Dusen, who passed last year. He loved Corsairs and was converting this kit to the cannon-armed version. It’s an extensive conversion, and it took me a while to figure out what he was trying to achieve. He was a very good modeller, and my goal is to complete it as he wanted and to his standard as best I can. Lots of resin, scratch-built additions and the like. I am enjoying this exercise, and it’s stretching my skills a bit as well. [foogallery id="2875"] Terry - Not a whole lot of progress, summer slows my progress a bit. I did dig out Randy Cooper’s Hammerhead corvette for cleanup and epoxy putty filling etc. It’s a long-term project, and since I was watching Stranger Things 4 at the time, the work proceeded slowly. Nice kit with logical sub assemblies. Geoff: plugging away on painting and weathering the Trumpeter 1/32 Corsair, but ran out of XF 17 Sea Blue (it’s a BIG kit!) so I started the Moosearoo Cup kit - Arma Hobbies 1/72 P51B/C Mustang, and what a beauty! I have no illusions about being able to exceed the skills of the other podcasters, so my goal is to not embarrass our team! Most importantly - my drone finally blew out of the tree in a recent storm but less positively, it is completely dead. Terry: A little lining work on the Garmilon fleet and did get the wings attached to the Turbo Cavalier Mustang. That took some work, and some epoxy putty to make sure the joints will be strong. Anthony: I’ve been fluttering between several of my stalled out/shelf queen/deep guilt projects - 1/144 Char’s Zaku ll (soon-to-be-done), Yokoyama Hex Bug build with Campus Friends, VF-4 (decals half done), Don VanDuzen’s 1/35 Challenger I tribute build (primed), 1/72 Cat’s Eye Canopies (vac-formed), 1/48 Gabriel (Merdc painting), Lot’s of progress! Geoff - progressed a long way on the Moosearoo Cup entry- Arma Hobbies 1/72 P51A/B! Great kit. This led to a need for a “palette cleanser” so I pulled out the 1/72 LS kit of the BD5 and BD5J - the smallest jet ever built, it was famously flown by James Bond in Octopussy. Finally, the early P51 bug bit again and I’ve been plugging away on a 1/32 Hobbycraft P51A recon version. Nice shape but not as much detail as you might expect for 1/32. Terry - A fair amount of work over the past years on the Halberd Models Turbo Cavalier Mustang is now in the primer stage, the Dora Wings P-43 Lancer being painted, and the Zentradi Fleet being dull coated. And I watched Sandman on Netflix. So should you. Mike - 1/32nd F-18 for Brother in law. I noted in the most recent podcast there was mention made of "UK museums in England" or similar. Just wanted you to know we have some great aviation museums here in sunny Scotland as well, including the National Museum of Flight just south of Edinburgh, which contains a Concorde, Vulcan, Spitfire, Harrier, Tornado, Canberra and of course the only place in the UK where there is a Red Arrows Hawk on display. Well worth a visit! Anyway...wanted to pick your brains...a few years ago I flew in a T6 Harvard in Florida...I now have the 1/48 kit to make, but wanted two civilian pilots to add in. Do any of you know where I might find 1/48 scale civilian pilots? Also on the subject of Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson...were you guys aware he flies and displays his own WW1 fighter aircraft (a Fokker Triplane) as part of the WW1 Memorial Flight. Saw him at RIAT a few years ago and quite the display. Thanks again guys, love the podcast! We had some RCAF Hornets pass through my local airport recently (Prestwick International Airport) and managed to grab some photos...handy for weathering references (need to scroll down the page a bit) https://fineartamerica.com/profiles/gareth-burge/collections/aviation+the+jets Cheers, and looking forward to each episode. Geoff - finished “Over the Edge of the World” - great read. Looking for the next one that isn’t Clive Cussler.
Terry: Moving along well with Clean Sweep, fighters are now over Berlin. The Mustangs are still troubled with teething problems. I did pick up Moorecock’s Elric Trilogy to read while travelling etc.

*************************************** MAILBAG We want to hear from you! Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com. I just finished listening to Anthony's interview with Rob Booth concerning the future of the IPMS and I wanted to write in to say thank you. I am exclusively a Sci-Fi modeler. Thanks to Dave over at the PMM podcast I am also a member of IPMS/USA but it's only because I feel an obligation to support the hobby in general. There is honestly not much for me in IPMS currently, and I'm not very engaged in the organization. However, thanks to Anthony's interview with Rob, I decided to vote on the new amendments to the constitution and by-laws, in the interest of inclusivity. I imagine there are a lot of people out there like me who would love for IPMS to promote and support their niche of this fantastic hobby but who are apathetic to the current iteration of the organization. One issue I would have loved to hear addressed in that interview is the chicken and egg problem of new contest categories. Rob said that they track the level of participation in each of their categories and try to respond with new categories and modifications to existing ones where necessary. My question then is: why would modelers enter sci-fi / gundam / other "niche" models into IPMS contests if there are no categories that properly value their contest entries? And if IPMS is waiting until they see significant levels of participation in those niches to create sensible contest categories... well, you see the problem. If IPMS wants to truly be seen as inclusive it needs to proactively court modelers in areas of the hobby that it has traditionally overlooked by reaching out to those communities and working directly with them to establish new contest categories and other opportunities within IPMS. If you want something, you have to go after it. You can't wait for it to come to you. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the great podcast, Gino

Still a work in progress. Just a bit more work on the Moosaroo cup entry Geoff - similar to Stuart, lots of real life stuff these last few weeks, but I DID get a mojo wake up call to go back to a kit I started in the 1980’s: a metal kit of a 1909 Ford Model T Tourer! Way out of my comfort zone, but that’s the point really. What triggered this was the desire to use some of the “new” (to me) paints I received last month - some nice old Metallics. In the end I didn’t use them (because 1909 Fords didn’t have metallic finishes…), but I am still plugging away on this ancient kit, and I’m enjoying it! Terry - Working on the Moscato F-203 Dragon and the Aldrin Class by Will Barton. Both are in the stages of pinning and prepping, so a fair amount of work without a lot to show. I did pick up a Tamiya 1/48 P-47 for that XP-47H conversion which is serenading me with its siren’s song. *************************************** SPONSOR AD #1 *************************************** WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart - More work done on the Moosaroo cup. This is proving to be quite a challenging kit and requires quite a bit of planning, due to its small size and finding a logical way forward. For example, the cab consists of quite a few parts, several of these will need to be assembled, primed and painted first before attaching them to the rest of the kit. Also working on some Battletech Mini’s, trying a new technique called slapchop. [foogallery id="3480"] Geoff - lots of reorganizing the hobby room to get a display cabinet installed (removed from the dining room) and make the reference materials more accessible. In the process of creating an index I found a good article on the Handley Page 0/400, so I started work on the old (1968) Airfix kit. Lots of work to get the wing “ribs” to scale (the kit molding had 2x4’s as ribbing tape!) but it’s not a bad kit once that’s fixed. [foogallery id="3476"] Terry - Some work on the Aldrin class, I need to do a bit more on that as well. While in Cincinnati I built a little shelf cabinet unit for some 3D printed paint racks for the Pro Acryl sets. It’s a bit tight, I may need to do some filing or have them printed 10% bigger. [foogallery id="3475"] *************************************** WHAT WE ARE READING Stuart - Starry Messenger: Cosmic Perspectives on Civilization - Neil deGrasse Tyson

Mostly working on real world stuff like battening down the hatches for winter though.
Terry - some work on the Aldrin-class - mostly buffing paint at this point. I hope to get a good coat before masking and painting detail and panel colors. Stuart - Slow and steady on the Moosaroo Cup. The cab and back bed have been attached to the body. Wheels on later this week. I have some HO-scale sheep I want to add to the diorama. Primed with white, working on dry brushing next. [foogallery id="3512"] Geoff - struggling with rigging the 1/72 Airfix Handley Page 0/400 and got back to a shelf queen - a 1/72 Airfix Albatross DV in Richthofen livery. Also started playing with armour weathering on a Russian tank donated by Frank Donati of our London Club. Next though will be a Christmas project to build “something cool” for a grandson. Thinking about the SR75 Penetrator but in bright colours! [foogallery id="3508"] Terry - Got a good coat of NATO black on the Lamda carrier decks, and glosscoat over that. I’m debating whether I need to buff that or just paint markings. It depends on how many decals I will use vs. painting. Also working on this year’s Christmas Birds. About 90% done with them.
*************************************** WHAT WE ARE READING Stuart - Coming of Age in the Milky Way by Timothy Ferris. Just starting the 19th century. It’s fascinating how some discoveries of things were done independently but also some would not have happened without the work done by previous generations. Geoff - SAS Bravo Three Zero by Des Powell and Damien Lewis. Just started, but I already feel terribly inadequate when measured against the SAS! Terry - Still reading Ed Yong’s An Immense World. Just want to thank you for a very informative and easy-listening podcast. It definitely helps me get through my days at work. Just catching up on the latest episodes and heard the update from Scale ACT 2023. It was the 1st time I'd attended and was an amazing show! I met up with some people in person for the 1st time who I have talked to for a few years on Instagram. We ended up going out for some refreshing adult beverages both nights of the weekend. I can definitely understand it when people say that it's the people that make the shows. During the episode, I heard you mention the Ram Kangaroo at the show. That was mine. It was the Gecko Models kit and it was a dream to put together. Here are a few more pics of it (attached). Keep up the great podcasting!! Nick - Social media: The Scale Armourer Gordon Sorensen Enjoyed the latest podcast… I went to Telford for the first time this year. Montreal has direct flights to LHR, and it’s about a 3 hour drive north-west from there. There are three large halls, totalling about 100,000 sq.ft. The 170+ different clubs and SIGs were situated in the middle of the halls, and 120+ vendors around were on the outskirts and along the walls. I displayed some models on the Danish SIG, and had a great time. I spent waaaay over my budget, but I justify it saying ´I am saving on shipping costs…’

Sanded and resurfaced the Lamda carrier decks, they were a bit rougher than I would have liked. I think they may be ready. Also went back to the Hasegawa Regault kit. Pretty good molding given the age, but raised panel lines and rivets for sure - neither of which bothers me really. Lots of reinforcement is required internally though, as it’s quite large and the joins are not large. Putty too, but not a crazy amount. It’s my transition kit to non-aircraft models, as it has the launcher and tractor as well! Stuart - Work continues on the YF-21 Good fit as is to be expected from this Hasegawa release. Lots of priming and painting of sub-assemblies lie ahead. Terry - did not paint the Regult, it got a bit cold in my garage shop. I did do some work on the Halberd Models XP-47H, it’s as easy as expected from a Tamiya conversion. I too am a big fan of the Robotech/Macross series and especially the aircraft. I’ve heard that you guys get extras for your kits and wanted to know where you got them. I’ve been reading the books that the show “The Expanse” was made from and really love them. Thanks for the great show! Mike Gordy Hi Stuart and gang, Just a quick line to say how much I’ve enjoyed listening to your podcast. It’s just like eavesdropping on a couple of buddies discussing their favourite builds and really keeps me entertained! Given that it’s almost time for the Moosaroo Cup again (Go Stuart!) Going to be called the CF-21 Peregrine. Moosaroo Cup needs to have pictures done this week. Geoff - Wayward Zeppelin LZ77 is cruising above an uncharted tropical volcanic island near Iceland after being blown WAY off course during a raid in 1916. Harassed by Pteradons, their accompanying (don’t ask how they got there!) Fokker DR1 Triplanes cannot protect the doomed ship! Dinos and DR1’s are coming this week from fellow club modeller Ron, but it’s really coming along nicely - even with the required PE work! Terry - Not a lot of time while I was traveling for business, at our plant so just a single hotel but still, not a ton of time. Big dinners are awful. On the plus side the Steam Deck is great for travel time. I did get some work done on a few projects, the P-47H is coming along, and I brought the 1/48 Jeep which comes with the Tamiya P-47M kit to the club meeting which was fun to work on. Getting the paint touched up a bit on the Regult so I can mask off grey areas.
*************************************** WHAT WE ARE READING Stuart - The Year Without Summer:1816 and the Volcano That Darkened the World and Changed History Geoff - Mostly online stuff about Zeppelins…. And plowing through a collection of Scale Model magazines going back to the 1970’s! Terry - Started reading Anna Ploszajski’s Handmade: A Scientist’s Search for Meaning. She is a materials scientist who has chosen a number of materials and objects to describe while making things in workshops, like iron, glass, plastic, brass etc. Very interesting and I’ve been interested in materials science I started reading the graphic novel omnibus of Fritz Lieber’s Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, which I think I signed up for via Kickstarter? This is a major influence on fantasy to come - like Elric etc. *************************************** SPONSOR AD #2 *************************************** THINGS WE’VE SEEN Kitmasx, is a guy making masks for various aircraft and vehicles - window masks, markings and more.

*************************************** SPONSOR AD #1 *************************************** Topic Changes in modelling over the years and the impact social media has had on styles, techniques and even subject matter - the rise of non-historic subjects (eg: film and TV models, sci fi, anime, etc.) and what the future holds. My guess - WW1 and 2 subjects become more niche as truly historical in nature and entertainment subjects increase as modellers age out. *************************************** WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart - CF21 is complete. Working on some battle mechs as as well as the first of two Ornithopters from the latest Dune movie. Meng made a kit similar in quality to the Bandai micro Star Wars kits. The first one I built in a landed configuration. I should have added nose weight to it, but it’s going on a base so I can glue it down. I think the scale is around 1/200 [foogallery id="3618"] Geoff - finishing off the Zeppelin vs Pterodactyls project, which has been fast and fun. I also put two articles together for IPMS Canada - on the Zeppelin project and my 1/32 Revell Lysander target tug. Now I’m back at the Moebius 1/144 Discovery from 2001 which is the subject of another long delayed article. My guilt at the delay finally forced me to get at it! [foogallery id="3611"] Terry - Moving along with the XP-47H. Looking good under some paint, so I am cautiously optimistic. The Haseagawa Regult is looking good under some paint as well. [foogallery id="3623"] *************************************** WHAT WE ARE READING
Geoff - Finished Bravo Three Zero by Des Powell - a good book about SAS operations in Desert Storm. Stuart - The Year Without Summer:1816 and the Volcano That Darkened the World and Changed History Terry - Finished Handmade. Very interesting, and more about how she interacts with the materials while making all these items, it’s a very personal book. No more buying paint you already have. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/paintrack/id1490523130 Keep up the great work. -Andrew Armstrong Centerport NY We want to hear from you! *************************************** WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart - Finished the Dune Ornithopters, Great little kits. I am also working on painting the bases for the USS Dallas and Typhoon class 1/700 subs. Other projects include painting mini’s both Battletech and some fantasy clerics. It’s nice to have a break from more complex kits; these projects have been doing that for me. Now to decide what I’m going to do next…… Anthony - 1/72 UN Spacey Legioss, Finished a No-paint HG RX-78, the Gundam Hazel, and a few more Shelf/Box Queen projects in the works! [foogallery id="3640"] Terry - Masks off, next up decals! Those fuselage cooler doors mean insignia needs to be cut up a bit, fortunately, I have an abundance of those insignia. Blue was a primer coat of AV Wolf Grey (Maybe my most-used color) followed by Tamiya blue - I added some flat base to help with opacity, but wow it was too much. I'll never learn with Tamiya flat. Followed by Tamiya gloss blue, so it's like 5 coats of thinned paint. I think a second coat of gloss over that will be needed, and will help with the markings too. I have a set of P-47 stencils, and I'll use them on this project since I want it to be a production aircraft. I also have an idea for the shark mouth. I see a couple of things I should address, but won't. *************************************** WHAT WE ARE READING Stuart - The Year Without Summer:1816 and the Volcano That Darkened the World and Changed History Anthony - Scale Aviation 1 Jan. 2024 - Kris Seiber Edition *************************************** SPONSOR AD #2 *************************************** THINGS WE’VE SEEN Anthony - Mobile Suit Breakdown Podcast Stuart - Shogun Mini Series *************************************** THE LAST WORD SMP Ep. 137 is also sponsored by Return To Kit Form (R2KF). Welcome to Episode 138 Sponsored by CultTVMan, Sean’s Custom Model Tools and Return To Kit Form Hosts Stuart Geoff Terry Thanks to our latest Patreon and Buy Me a Coffee Supporters: Check out our What We Like page for lists of what we like. *************************************** LATEST NEWS AMPS National Show Good afternoon guys. I was wondering if you could give our upcoming IPMS Houston show a mention in your upcoming Episodes. Our show is on May 4th. We have dual themes this year. May the 4th be with you (Star Wars) & Adversaries (natural combatants). We are also introducing a best of show mecha award. We are also implementing Gold, Silver & Bronze as well as feedback sheets. *************************************** MAILBAG We want to hear from you! Lots in the mailbag this week Paul Redding On the F1 cars/advertising there are still some models out there that have the decals included; have a look at the instruction sheet for the Italeri McLaren https://www.scalemates.com/kits/italeri-4711-mclaren-mp4-2c--1328411 Page 40 (download) **** Joel Middleton I love the podcast, keep up the good work! I was just listening to your banter with Terry about the only reason you like Special Hobbies being their tendency to keep their website up to date. Which leads me to believe you might enjoy the website of Arcus Hobby Color, they are a long-time paint producer from Zaporizhzhia in Ukraine. They keep the website up to date with new paint releases, and include historical references, a blog and a model gallery where they do an in-depth magazine style feature on different kits finished using their paints. Stay safe, Joel from Mansfield in the UK **** Good day Stuart, I hope you're well. Thank you for the podcast, which is excellent. Geoff's Zeppelin diorama was 100% fun and I am sure the actual documentary record of this event was lost/destroyed prior to Germany's defeat in World War 1. I have attached two pictures from the latest issue of New Scientist magazine (a weekly science magazine from here in the UK, which I believe is available in Canada). The feature of interest, "The Power of Solitude" suggests our solitary hobby is good for our health if you exclude the chemicals we may be breathing in! The term used is "crafting solitude" where we carry out a meaningful solitary activity which reduces stress and anxiety and improves relaxation. Here in the UK some doctors working in our National Health Service ( still 'free' at the point of delivery) do social prescribing linking people to activities and social groups to improve well-being. Help for Heroes has already established that model making helps with mental health. So maybe the next time I visit my GP, I will be prescribed an Airfix model kit! Best wishes to the team. Some more mechs are being painted. Starting the Hasegawa F-15J in 1/72nd. Got the front end almost done and then had to deal with a short shot in the area of the gun port. Another RCAF what-if? Perhaps… My order from China came in, got the Dspaie circular sander. Geoff - Did two articles for IPMS Canada covering the Moebius Discovery and HAL kits and (of course) the completely truthful Zeppelin build, and with ALL my obligations for writing completed, I decided to start some new ones! Resurrecting old built up kits, with a resin Martin Mars water bomber and having fun with old kits, with a 1977 Revell 1/144 Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and Space Shuttle. Also plugging away on an older 1/48 Sukhoi Su-25 and a resin 1/144X B70 Valkyrie and X108 Rapier, just because I saw them at Heritagecon and desired them - busy! Terry - not a lot of progress, but working on numerous items. Decals done on the XP-47H, and some painting on the Regult. Plus, bits and pieces here and there on other kits. I’ve been travelling a bit, and getting other things done around the house. Starting to work on the schedule for Wonderfest vehicle demos. Some first-time presenters again this year, plus the return of Bauble Young. *************************************** WHAT WE ARE READING Stuart - Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results by Shane Parrish Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout by Cal Newport Geoff - Journeys to the Ends of the Earth by John Balchin Secret Projects: Flying Saucer Aircraft by Tony Butler and Bill Rose Terry - Just starting Madeline Murray’s Song of Achilles. Her first Greek mythology book, Circe was probably the best novel I’ve read in 10 years. I have high hopes, this one follows Patroclus. *************************************** THINGS WE’VE SEEN Build Guide Pt I: URAL-4320 in 1/72nd scale from ICM Bauble Young’s latest big project, the FTL ship from Foundation. *************************************** SPONSOR AD #1 *************************************** WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart - Work continues on the CF-15 what if. Hasegawa does the engine nozzles as five separate parts each. I have lost one to the floor monster so I will be looking for either 3d print or after-market replacements. Geoff - continuing on getting the Martin Mars and the NASA shuttle carrier aircraft and shuttle in 1/144 ready for paint. Ordered decals for the 747 from Drawdecal and the shuttle from Lake County Spaceport. Terry - Some progress on my open projects, I’ll get the landing gear on the P-47 and do some minor weathering before dullcoating, then I’ll probably mostly use pastels for further weathering. I just want the Regult off my bench. I need to get the decals on that. Frank - Mirror Models Komsomolets T-20 Tractor - started this last week and the interior tub was painted tonight - engine, etc. I made some cloth-looking seat pads as per reference images. Also painted a 1/72 ICM BM-24-12 kit, I picked up 4 at AMPS, got a new Grad but got 3 from the mid-90s. It looks okay…the rocket bed is rough and i’d recommend scratch if you want it to sing [foogallery id="3690"] *************************************** WHAT WE ARE READING Stuart - Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results by Shane Parrish Slow Productivity: The Lost Art of Accomplishment Without Burnout by Cal Newport Geoff - “The Better Angels of Our Nature” by Steven Pinker. Good, factual survey of history establishes that despite what some people seem to think, violence in the West is at a historic low point. Also “Spies in the Sky” by Taylor Downing - a history of aerial intelligence in WW2. Terry - Finished Madeleine Murray’s Song of Achilles. It’s brilliant. She really brings the Greek characters to life, all these legendary names. I started to wonder how she would finish the story, since the narrator Patroclus must die before Achilles. The end will bring you to tears. What next? The 18th volume of That Time I got Reincarnated as a Slime, so that’s a background read. I have some nonfiction to choose from. WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart - CF-15 is almost done, just waiting until club night to pick up some 3d printed nozzles from a fellow club member. Time to start thinking about what’s next. So many choices… The one-year challenge build of the Tamiya 1/350 Yamato needs some thought…. [foogallery id="3707"] Geoff - I started (and finished!) the Horizon Models 1/72 Atlas Agena this week, and posted pics and comments on the show Facebook page. I received the white and black shuttle tile decal sets for the 1/144 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft project from Lake County Spaceport. Excellent quality and service! Just received the 747 decals from Drawdecal in Florida - they look very good! Also awaiting decals for the Martin Mars water bomber from Above and Below Decals - also in shipping purgatory. [foogallery id="3705"] Terry - Some progress on both the Regult and XP-47H. Also building some other items, getting things ready for painting, like a pair of Star Blazers Dreadnaughts I picked up at last Wonderfest. Geoff - Same things I was reading last show - spending way too much time battling rabbits and deer in the garden! Mostly reading formulas for rabbit repellents!
Terry - Not a Scientist: How Politicians Mistake, Misrepresent and Utterly Mangle Science by Dave Levitan. I bought this new, but I am just reading it now. How to spot the BS politicians use to malign and mangle science. Also reading Volume 18 of Slime.

[foogallery id="3728"] Geoff - masking and painting on the Martin Mars waterbomber, the Boeing 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft and shuttle and a 1/48 V2, but just starting a 1/48 XF-85 Goblin.
Terry - A lot of work done these past two weeks, since Toshi is getting me up around 5:15. The Regult is getting decals and detail painting. The XP-47H is now in dull coat with some pastel work. I hope to have it finished the week after Wonderfest. I’m starting to paint the Yamato Dreadnaughts, with some fresh AV Game Air paints. Also, since I’ll be painting red I’ve started putting paint on a Crusher Joe Harpy fighter which has been awaiting paint for the better part of a year. Productivity! Terry - the P-47H is languishing a bit, I have been more enthusiastic about the Yamato Dreadnaughts and Crusher Joe Harpy. Painting moving along really nicely on those, now the Dreadnaughts move into masking preparing for more painting. Geoff. Busy month… Finished the Moosearoo entry (Arma Hobbies 1/72 P51B) and submitted pictures as required - first podcast over the line according to Iain! Also finished and delivered the two 1/18 jet builds to the London Jet Aircraft Museum and submitted the associated article to IPMS Canada. Finished the CL52 and Orenda Iroquois engine and the related article for IPMS Canada as well. Finished construction of my first Gundam ever - an ancient Bandai molding of Dijeh. Finally, working on the Airfix 1/144 Concorde prototype and production versions - both kits came in one box from the Broughdale Stash. All that finishing and starting, as well as two weeks of family visit time… Phew! Terry Some time working on the military version of the Ki-1 “Babs.” It looks good, and is in the gloss coat phase. I’ve also spent some more time masking the Bandai drop ship and cleaning up the Halberd Models Curtiss Seahawk. That’s really nice. *************************************** SPONSOR AD #1 *************************************** Interview *************************************** SPONSOR AD #2 *************************************** WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Terry - continuing work on masking the drop ship. I did cut several sizes of hexagons from a sheet of Tamiya Tape paper - the proper settings for you to remember are speed:4 and pressure:4. I ruined a sheet by presuming washi tape was the same setting. Work continues on the military Babs. I am currently resisting the urge to start work on the Kotare Spitfire. The HK 1/48 B-25 kit arrived, it’s very nice. [foogallery id="3201"]
Stuart - Plugging away on the Beaufighter. Got the RAF Sky on the underside but then noticed a nasty gap along one of the wing seam lines, I must have knocked it at the ‘right’ angle at some point. Going back to file, sand and paint. Geoff - Nada. Zip. Burned myself out on all the builds in the first quarter. Well, I did do some more sanding and priming on the two Airfix 1/144 Concordes, but that’s about it. Most efforts went into demolishing our cabin by the lake (before it slides down the cliff)…. WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart - Beaufighter masking for the top side is complete. Starting work on a Mig37B, trying to decide if it will be a Macross or a RCAF what-if. Did a clean and re-org of the workbench which gave me a bit more working room and some mojo. [foogallery id="3235"] Geoff - vacationing with family on the east coast for most of the last two weeks so no modelling, but I did visit a great Military Aircraft museum in Greenwood, Nova Scotia and bought a few books! Read “Shattered Sword - The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway” by Jonathan Parshall and Anthony Tully. Excellent read and a look at the battle from the Japanese point of view, using Japanese primary sources. Highly recommended. [foogallery id="3224"] Terry - a little progress on the Mitsubishi Babs. I had to repair some seams but now it’s all sealed up. I should get started on the panelling and some nice moderate weathering then be done. I’m cleaning up a 3D print of a TOS type variation of the USS Shenzou. [foogallery id="3225"] ***************************************

*************************************** SPONSOR AD #1 *************************************** WHAT’S ON THE BENCH Stuart - Beaufighter paint on and complete. A satisfying feeling when the masking comes off. Several small areas require some touch up, but over all it looks good.I’m trying Tamiya XF72 as I do not have an AK colour for the RAF brown currently. The XF72 is labelled as JGSDF brown and is slightly lighter than the XF52 Flat Earth I have used in the past. I’ve read that others find the colour closer to the actual RAF brown. Then masked and put on the AK Dark Green. Geoff - Not much modelling, but got a long way on the rebuilding of our screened cabin by the lake! On the bench I was limited to working on the Tamiya 1/12 Datsun 240Z… a LOT of detail on this one! Terry - The Fine Molds Mitshubishi Babs is nearly done. Dullcoat looks OK, so just some finishing bits to do. I’m trying to get it done for the May deadline. Will Barton’s Aldrin Class version of the Shenzou ship - a TOS era version of the design - is moving along nicely, and in primer now. Some parts in their second coat after further cleanup. Will plans to have 5 or so copies to sell at Wonderfest. Decals available from G-Cals. [foogallery id="3248"]

. Welcome to Episode 118 Sponsored by CultTVMan, Sean’s Custom Model Tools and Return To Kit Form Hosts Stuart Geoff Terry Thanks to our latest Patreon Supporters: This is an excerpt of Ep. 118 which will be coming out in a few days. Due to the timeliness of this issue, we felt it was important to get this out early. Our thanks to David for agreeing to come on the podcast. David Lockhart - President IPMS USA Bio: I live in Duluth, GA (40 miles NE of Atlanta). Prior to my retirement (Aug 2021) I was in diagnostic microbiology sales. I started building models young (around the age 9-10). I modelled until college and like many, college, marriage, career & kids, but a bit of a hold on modelling. I started back when the kids got into middle school and started ignoring Dad. Since then, I’ve been going full steam ahead. I am a bit of an eclectic modeller: I build ships, planes, sci-fi. My favourite models are sailing ships. I’m finishing up a couple of chapter projects (Panther Ausf. D tank) and will get back to finishing my Revell 1/96 Constitution. [foogallery id="3260"]

Most are rare, odd resin things and I’m really enjoying the process of bringing them back to life! Terry - I should be done with the 1/48 Fine Molds Mitshubishi Babs by the time this episode airs. I’ll get photos this week. Cleanup work on the 1/1400 Aldrin Class continues well. I have been replacing some greeblies, and need to to a bit of scribing reinforcement. That’s always the problem with 3D printed kits - if they have a lot of details it’s difficult to remove the grow lines. This will disappear as each generation of printers improves. Hello gents,
I just wanted to thank you and the people on Facebook for the air compressor advice. I really appreciate it.
I actually found exactly what I was looking for this past week at a local shop and it was $80 off. Bonus.
It gave me the chance to put together an old Monogram Battlestar Galactica Viper. Built it straight out of the box with only basic painting. No weathering applied as I wanted to get back into airbrushing. Used Pledge floor shine (Used to be called Future Floor Polish) for clear coat. Decals were so old they were breaking but the kit was fun to build and good practice. Needs a flat coat but that is on order.
Now to build something with a bit more of a challenge and add all the weathering. Next up is a Me 163 Komet. This one will be showcase worthy.

Hello Stuart and Anthony,
Gary Sausmikat from Williamsport, PA.
I’d like to give Anthony due recognition. I recently purchased a set of Super Sanding Blocks but unfortunately the package arrived “opened/damaged” and empty. After sending Anthony an email, the response I received was a personal phone call. I was a bit surprised but that shows the commitment he has towards running Goodman Industries…. the correct way, with integrity and making things right. Happy to say I was sent a replacement set which arrived the other day, in good condition.
“What’s on my Bench”? Along with my current builds I can now say a set of Goodman Blocks too. If anyone is wondering if they should pull the trigger and buy a set, I say yes, I use them all the time. (I attached some pics).
Faithful listener to Scalemodel Podcast in the great white North, OTB down under and my fellow countrymen at Plastic Model Mojo. You all are doing a great job for our hobby and keeping my bench time fun, which is what it’s all about!

I love these Chibi-Maru kits from Fujimi because they include or can be purchased with photo etch, wood decks, and fit together beautifully. Great way to dip your toes into multimedia shipbuilding. This is the IJN Ise kit with photo etch and wood deck. Thanks again for putting on a great show.

G’day Stuart and Anthony,
I hope that you are both doing well at this crazy time!
I know that it is well and truly overdue, but I’m sure that you can appreciate how flat out things have been. Especially with recently qualifying as a Volunteer Bush Fire Fighter with the RFS, here in Sydney.
I thought that I would kill two birds with one stone and show you my workspace that I use. (When I get the time). As well as letting you know, Anthony, that these Super Sanding Blocks work like a treat. As I am currently using them on a 1/72 Super Constellation that I am refurbishing slowly.
Anyway, I hope that both you and your families take care and stay safe and healthy.
Kindest Regards,
Ray

Hi Stuart, I was just listening to the latest episode and you mentioned your “what if” Canadian A-4 project. Something you might not know is that you could actually do a historically accurate Canadian A-4 Skyhawk! Yes, the RCN trialled the Skyhawk as a replacement for the Banshee’s on the HMCS Bonaventure, so we actually did operate them a little.
In the end, the A-4 was just too heavy and landed at too high a speed for the deck structure of the Bonnie.
I got that info from a guy who flew as part of a Tracker crew on the Bonnie, but there is also a brief reference to it on the Bonaventure’s Wikipedia page.
Cheers,
– Allan

Tony Jacob writes in about doing things your way.
The best way to do anything in modelling is the way that suits you and works for you!
I don’t believe in there being only 1 right way to do anything in modelling and too many modellers worry too much about what other people are doing. I always tell beginners to find some GOOD advice, then use that just as a starting point. The best example is the common question ‘what ratio should I thin paint for airbrushing’. The ‘skim milk’ suggestion is great advice as a starting point. But each paint brand, sometimes each colour, may perform better either more or less thinned. And each airbrush, each compressor setting and each modeller will always get their best results at a thinning ratio that specifically suits them.
None are right or wrong. Just experiment and find what works best for you. Then anyone who tells you “You’re doing it wrong” can go take a long walk off a short pier.

The 2020 Scale Modelling Survey
https://scalemodelpodcast.com/2020survey
Several years ago Jon Bius did a modelling survey in which the modelling community responded in a big way. This survey provided some interesting insights into the scale modelling community.
It’s time for another survey with some expanded questions. I have reached out to Jon and with his permission, I have used his original questions and thanks to several other contributors including the On The Bench and Plastic Model Mojo podcasts we have added several more which we know will be interesting to members of our hobby.
The survey is via Google Forms and is anonymous. It will be available until the end of August 2020. The results when compiled will be available to all.
Link to 2020 Modelling Survey
Please share far and wide as we would like to get as large a cross-section of modeller’s as possible.
The Survey closes Sept 30th.

Hi there Stuart. I have encountered your podcast a little while ago and have caught up on your most recent recordings. Very enjoyable and informative.
I’ve been a builder of models for a long time but in different ways. I started about 50 years ago with simple models. I focused on WWII aircraft early on. I also did rockets with Estes and Centuri kits.I then got into racing 10th scale R/C cars. Even became sponsored. We traveled a bit to different races, brought home trophies and some great stories. I also became interested in High Power Rocketry. This can be the big stuff. I’ve included a picture of my most recent build, an Astrobee-D, just under 6 feet tall. I’m licensed for Level 1, so I can purchase engines up to “I”. I’ve flown a “J” motor but didn’t take the test for Level 2. If you are familiar with the small engines A, B, C, etc… Each letter up is double the thrust. So you can see once you get to J, it’s a big motor. Recently I’ve been back into plastic, just finishing the monster C57-D Cruiser from the movie Forbidden Planet. I included some shots of that one. Like you have said, “where are you gonna put this thing?” Well, I made a little shelf and have it up over my head.
Enough about me. Like I mentioned, love your show.
One thing. You seem to mix up the name of the ship with the name of the man. The ship is Yamato but the man is Yamamoto. Only because I’m a huge WWII reader and it makes me wince when you say the ship instead of the man who was shot down by P-38s.
Be well!

Hi Stuart. I am behind on my listening and just learned that Anthony is cutting back his time.
Could you pass a question along to him, please?
“Which of the Macross plane model kits are the best as far as detail and quality??”
Thank you for your dedication to our hobby and the work you put into SMP!!
Anthony’s reply
Hi Jay, Anthony here. You can not go wrong with a 1/72 or 1/48 VF-1 kit from Hasegawa, for quality or price! There’s also very nice kits from Bandai who maintain very high-quality kits of the more current series! Hope you enjoy it!
Wayne Peters
Hi guys, just been listening to Ep 52. Re the new release Italeri 1/9 German Infantryman, I’m pretty sure this is a re-pop of the old Esci kit (#6001) which I have somewhere in my stash!
And re the HobbyBoss XM706E2, they also did an M706 (kit # 82148 from 2008) and Verlinden did an XM76E2 way back in 1988 (kit # 369).
Frank Ramsay
First I want to say I’m going to miss hearing Anthony every episode, I think he’s been a great co-host. But I completely understand life comes first. And I’m glad he will still be involved doing the interviews.
I was about to type up a big discussion on model railroad scales but decided it wasn’t really that interesting. So all I’ll say on the subject is that you mentioned at least one of the odder scales (I think it was On30) where the train is a different scale than the track and you wondered why that was. The reason these exist is because not every actual railroad uses the same distance between rails and if you want an accurate scale model railroad of such a railway then you need these odd scales.
You also asked us to write about our thoughts on constant-scale modeling. For me, I’m “sort of” a constant-scale modeller in that I have a specific scale for each type of subject: Aircraft (early flight) I do in 1:32, Military Vehicles of all types are 1:35, Maschinen Krieger is 1:20, Gunpla is Master Grade (aka 1:100).

Mark Bilas of Wolfpack Decals passed away earlier this month of a heart attack.
His website is still up with no notification of his passing. There is a concern that unaware modellers will place orders and then get pissed off when they don’t get their decals.
Might want to let folks know that if you have made a purchase then please be patient while the family gets things sorted. Also, if you plan on placing an order from Wolfpack please hold off until the family can figure out what to do with it.

I would love to hear a “PE Whisperer” show where old newbies like me can learn that PE requires specific tools to be effectively applied.
Another technique piece would be on masking, including which products work best. I have some Vallejo mask liquid and it simply is worthless. 3M Blue tape, so so. Tamiya 2mm flexible tape – OMG! The stuff is really nice. But am I applying it and cutting it properly? Especially on the old Hasegawa 1/72 H8K Emily that has the glass frames molded on the inside and the outside is smooth? I’ve got pics, I’m getting better but … this baby won’t be winning any contests.

SMP’s Super Model Contest 2020 Gallery
From the Judge:
Winners and notable entries in two categories. I split them into two categories and split the prizes for those categories. The Execution will get the Baby Crab and the Wow will get the Lamborghini. The execution of concept is judged by how well the modeller brought a concept to life. Wow is simply how impressive the model was on the screen.
Execution of Concept:
Brian McGinnis – 1/48 Fokker DR.1
Good build and figures in a vignette, nicely done all around.
Will S. – 1/100 Gundam Barbatos
Great work with posing and very subtle lighting.
Winner of the MHM Baby Space Crab:
Andrew Hilton-Wigg – 1/100 Gundam RX-78-2S
Desert scheme on the typically colourful RX-78. Subtle shading and appropriate weathering. This is a concept well-realized and looks great.
Wow, that’s Impressive:
Rodolfo Rupoli – Kalamity Gorilla mech
Cool to see a Kalamity product, and this is probably the best paint and weathering in the contest. Grime and weathering is very convincing.
Al Quint. – 1/18 Hydro-Vee powerboat
Great subject, very clean work. More convincing painting on the interior would put this on the trophy table.
Michael Canella – 1/220 Gundam Teifsturmer Deep Striker
Wow, that’s one hell of a night light. Looks like an excellent build and very well lit. The photography is spot-on for exposure showing the bright lights but mostly not overexposing the subject.
Winner of the 1/24 Aoshima Lamborghini Aventador
Rick Reinert – 1/32 Roland
Impressive work, rigging looks fantastic, the color tones for the wood, leather and engine are great. Lozenge decals and details like turnbuckles for rigging are excellent work.

A fun and quick build. This is the first 1:144 build I have done and I’m amazed at how tiny it all is. Kept mixing up way too much paint for the size, being used to 1:72 and 1:48.
I have a number of these 1:144 in the stash. Glad they are there for a quick mojo booster.
Steve Bolton writes:
Anthony, I have this Aliens APC resin kit. Never done resin before. Have you any advice on cutting off the bottom block? I don’t know if it’s moulded that way or was glued on to keep body shape? Either way, a bit of poking with a knife doesn’t reveal any way forward. Any advice here mate? I have no belt sanders and the super sanding blocks won’t help until after it’s gone.

Special Guest Host: Kerry Traynor of IPMS Canada
Kerry started modelling as a young lad and like most modellers, set the hobby aside during secondary school and college. He got back to the hobby after college and has enjoyed it ever since. His primary interest lays in 1/48 post-WW2 aircraft, but oddly, he’s been building 1/48 and 1/32 scale WW2 aircraft and 1/35 modern armour of late.
He has been a member of IPMS Canada for almost 40 years, as well as a member of the chapters in Calgary, Ottawa and of course, here in London. He believes in taking an active role in the Chapter and has served as president of the London chapter a couple of times and chaired the South-Western Ontario Scale Model Expo committee on two occasions. He currently serves on the IPMS Canada Executive as the Chapter and Member Liaison. Prior to retiring in 2018, Kerry was a Professor in the Architectural Technology program at Fanshawe College for 29 years.

Still enjoying your podcast very much. Part 1 of the interview with Jonathan Mock was excellent, and am waiting for Part 2. I read Mr. Mock’s column in Model Airplane International, and it is always interesting and full of great insights.
I fully agree with what he said about the people saying the “hobby is dying”. What nonsense! Each month kits appear that we would not have dreamed of 20 years ago. The hobby may be changing direction. Gone are the days when kits could be purchased for pocket change, and maybe as the Baby Boom generation ages out, we will see an end to the flood of German armor, Mustangs and Spitfires. For a generation brought up on Star Wars we will see a lot more sci fi models. And that is okay. The older kits will still be here, and new genres will bring in new modelers. It is all good.

Correction on folding wings
Joel Middleton
Hello, it is lovely to hear Stuart is doing well.
In your last podcast, you mentioned that the Flyhawk SBD had been criticized for not having a wing fold. It is worth noting that the real thing didn’t either…
Otherwise a great show as always.
Ray Boorman from Toronto wrote in as well with the same facts.
*****
Hello Stuart, Geoff and Terry
I’m a long time listener to the pod. I am happy that Stuart is feeling better and thought I would share some thoughts about stashes since you three were talking stashes in your last episode.
On one hand, if it is managed and cared for, the stash is a legitimate hobby within a hobby. I see it as no different from other forms of collecting, even if the stasher has only the slightest intention to build the kits.
Hey, if having kits brings joy to someone, what is wrong with that?
However, an experience from earlier this year showed me the ‘dark side’ of the stash. Without getting into too much detail, a friend of mine purchased a collection and asked a few of us to help take it out of a house. I volunteered because (a) during covid, I’ve been extremely bored and house bound (b) it would be a fun morning with my model buddies and (c) I get to paw though models.
Well, after some 4-5 hours of clearing out a house with 10 other guys I can tell you this: There is definitely a difference between a managed stash and a hoard of model kits that have been piled endlessly and have gradually taken over all living spaces. A significant amount of these kits were not only sealed, they were not even taken out of the bag from the store. Just piled and piled and piled.
I can’t guess how many kits were there – but there were thousands. I only saw a small fraction of what was being boxed up and loaded onto almost two cube trucks. What I thought would be a fun experience became a depressing one.
The point I am trying to make is that “stash” went well beyond collecting and probably an indicator of something else. If you think one of your friends or some club member is heading down that road, it might not be a bad idea to check in on him once in a while to see how he is doing.
Chris Wallace / Model Airplane Maker
From Paul Brown:
Hi Terry, Just a quick heads up that there is a fault with the Kinetic F-104G! Kinetic is aware but has stated publicly they are not going to change the moulds due to cost (so you may need to graft a section from a monogram kit in to rectify!).
Above the wing section on the fuselage, where the jet intake blends into the trailing edge of the wing, the Kinetic kit stops way too far forward. They have corrected the issue on the TF-104G and the F-104C as they had not been released, so if the monogram fix isn’t practical, you may need to cut the single-seat nose off and fit to the Tf-104 (F-104 C tail is too short to make a G!
Hope that’s helpful

Hello gents,
Like a lot of people, I have gotten back into models in the past month after many years away from the hobby. It seems like a recurring theme these days and wow I can’t believe how much I am enjoying it again. Not sure why I left but work, moving, raising a family seemed to get in the way.
Do you have an air compressor you would recommend to someone with airbrushing experience but not an expert by any means (trying to get there though). I would like a 3-litre tank attached with a regulator and water trap. So many to choose from that I don’t know what is good or what is not.
Don’t feel like dropping $500 for an Iwata air compressor as I think my wife may have a cow. Trying to keep in the $200 range. I have been using my Iwata HP-C airbrush on a 5-gallon air tank that has a regulator and water trap installed. Works well but a pain the ass to have to run down to the garage and refill halfway through a project. Time for an air compressor.
Loving the podcast and the info you are sharing. I laughed when you told the story of dropping the X-Acto blade in your lap and cutting your leg. I just did that recently and now have a hole in my right thigh. |
