The Mariachi Cobre has been entertaining guests traveling around Epcot’s World Showcase since opening day making them one of the best-known Mariachi bands in the world. The internationally-acclaimed performers share that opening day distinction with only the Voices of Liberty. The Mariachi Cobre started in 1971, a full 10 years before Epcot Opening Day. It was formed by Randy Carrillo with the support of his younger brother Steve, his friend Mack Ruiz, and musical arranger, Frank Grijalva. Mariachi played in Anaheim at Disneyland for a Cinco De Mayo event not long after they became an opening day addition to Epcot where they have been playing ever since. The group has worked with such renowned artists as Linda Ronstadt, Julio Iglesias, Vicki Carr, Lucha Villa, Lola Beltran, Ana Gabriel, Guadalupe Pineda, Jose Luis Rodriguez, Rocio Banquells, and Beatriz Adriana. Those recordings include:  Mariachi Cobre, Este es Mi Mariachi and XXV Anniversary.

While the Mariachi Cobre continues to entertain guests with traditional Mexican music, they recently added an element of storytelling to their performance. Starting in March 2019, the Mariachi will present “The Story of Coco” along with a few Folklorico dancers to tell the tale of Miguel Rivera, his love of music, and his journey to find what matters most, his familia. The dancers will perform to the music of the film, and Miguel himself appears in the form of a hand-crafted puppet.

Be sure to check your times guide; typically the Mariachi Cobre performs 5 days a week, with specific shows dedicated to the “Story of Coco”

The Muppets: A Celebration of 30 Years. The CBS Special Presentation featured Jim Henson's Muppets, recounting the History of… The Muppets. Originally Aired January 21, 1986, the special is a celebration of all things Muppets featuring Muppets from The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Sam and Friends, and Fraggle Rock. The Muppets are hosting a banquet to celebrate the 30th anniversary and present a retrospective of Muppet film and television appearances. The show starts with a montage of Muppet clips celebrating the first 30 years of Muppets (1955-1985). From Sam and Friends in 1957, the Jimmy Dean Show in 1963, Ed Sullivan Show in 1968, Cher Show 1975, and The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson 1979, the early years are all covered. Fozzie reminds us that it was Kermit that began their careers, complete with a clip of Kermit getting the Muppets their first big break in The Muppet Movie. What follows is the greatest hits of Muppet Show segments, musical acts, and memories. Including the sesame street gang, Muppet babies, Little Muppet Monsters, and Fraggle Rock. “One Nation Under God”.  That was the original idea for what would become Walt Disney World’s Hall of Presidents.  The original concept would have been an addition to Disneyland’s Main Street USA.  Library Street would have featured Edison Square and The Hall of Presidents, as seen on 1958 Disneyland park maps.   The original concept was wax figures of all the US Presidents, which lead to the idea of animating the models.  Those thoughts and beliefs lead to the first Audio-Animatronic figure in human form: Abraham Lincoln.

That figure was the most advanced ever produced and featured in the Illinois Pavilion at the 1964 world’s fair.  The attraction relocated to Disneyland as Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, and guests can still experience an updated version of that original.

With Walt Disney World’s construction in 1971, technology had advanced enough to complete Walt’s Original vision of the “Hall of Presidents.”  The plans from Disneylands Liberty Street and Edison Square were revised and reworked to become The Magic Kingdoms Liberty Square.  The original Hall of presidents featured all US Presidents through Richard Nixon, the sitting President when Walt Disney World Opened in 1971.

The show remained unchanged, focused on the early history of the United States for 22 years.  In 1993 the show was completely updated and focused on more current issues.  In addition, Bill Clinton, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, and George Bush were addicted to the Presidential lineup, bringing us up to date.  Since then, the Hall of Presidents has been updated for each new administration.  In 2001 George W Bush was added, and in 2009 Barack Obama lent his voice to the attraction recording a short speech and reciting the Oath of office of the Presiden to the United States.  The 2009 version also included an extensive update to the lighting and projection systems, the original Abraham Lincoln speech was

restored, and George Washington became the third speaking President.  In 2017 Donald Trump was added, reciting the Oath of Office and a short speech.

This edition of SamsDisneyDiary features the 2017-2021 version of the attraction.  Presented for Historical reference, if history serves correctly, the Hall of presidents should see a scheduled refurbishment sometime in late January 2021 and reopen in time for the 4^th of July 2021 with a new President.  But, the Covid-19 Pandemic has us living in uncertain times; either way, look for The Hall of Presidents to be on the refurbishment list at Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom soon.  The refurb is a standard procedure and nothing out of the ordinary, though I’m sure we will see some attention-grabbing headlines “Hall of Presidents Closes.”  Be sure to subscribe to SamsDisneyDiary and we will have the latest updates as soon as possible.

There is nothing better than a Disney attraction with ties to Walt Disney himself.  First premiering at Disneyland in 1963, the Enchanted Tiki room was an opening day attraction at Walt Disney World in 1971.   The Disneyland version was the first attraction to feature audio-animatronics, the foundation for the Disney 1964 World’s Fair attractions.  The Walt Disney World version of the attraction was an identical show, with a different pre-show, the Tropical Serenade.

During a 2013 interview for the Tiki Room’s 50^th anniversary, Wally Crump explained that the Tiki Room’s original concept was a restaurant.  Walt was ahead of his time; The Rainforest Café wouldn’t open until 1994.  Of course, I joke, but you can see the similarities and how the show quickly became the focus versus a dining venue.

There are over 150 talking, singing, and dancing birds, flowers, tiki drummers, and tiki totem poles—all singing the signature “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room song” by the Sherman brothers, among others.

Originally Aired on January 21, 1968, Disneyland From The Pirates of the Caribbean to the World of Tomorrow featured Disneyland ambassador Marcia Miner takes viewers on a tour of the latest attractions at Disneyland, including Pirates of the Caribbean in New Orleans Square and a new Tomorrowland, featuring, among other attractions, the People Mover, Adventure Thru Inner Space and the Carousel of Progress.

The Mariachi Espectacular is a group of all-star mariachi musicians, made up of the best musicians from around the world. Members have also produced, composed, arranged, records for some of the most famous artists in the world. The group performed in the Plaza de la Familia at Disney California adventure to celebrate the release of the Disney Animation Coco, they have also performed during the Viva Navidad Holiday celebration at Disney California Adventure.

Premiering in 2013 and running until the 2020 Covid-19 Disneyland shutdown, Mickey and the Magic Map was a live show hosted multiple times a day at the Fantasyland Theater in Disneyland. The 24-minute performance featured Mickey Mouse in his classic role as Sorcerer’s Apprentice and included songs and characters from ten Disney animated films. As the story goes, the wise sorcerer Yen Sid tells of a wondrous map, a map like no other, with the power to take dreamers to any place imaginable. But when young apprentice Mickey Mouse attempts to paint the map’s one unfinished spot, he stumbles into a fantastic adventure through worlds of music, color, and beloved characters, as he discovers the mystery of the map’s magic!

Gran Fiesta Tour Starring, The Three Caballeros, is housed within the pyramid-shaped Mexico Pavilion at Walt Disney World’s Epcot. The attraction opened in April 2007, replacing the El Rio Del Tiempo attraction, becoming the first World Showcase attraction to feature Disney characters! The Three Caballeros from the 1944 Disney Film of the same name. Like every Disney attraction, the grand fiesta tour has a story. As we make our way to the rear of the Mexico pavilion, the attraction begins with concert posters. It appears that we are just in time for a three caballeros’ performance tonight!!! We board our boat for a scenic ride around a Mayan pyramid with an active volcano in the distance. The boat passes by the main dining area for the San Angel inn Restaurante. A node to Disneyland’s Blue Byou restaurant and the Pirates of the Caribbean. As we make our way down the opening tunnel, we See Panchito and Jose introducing themselves, only to realize that Donald Duck is Missing?! Dónde Está Donald Duck? The search for Donal sends us on our journey through Mexico, we need to find Donald in time for the concert. The journey takes us through multiple scenes of live-action footage combined with the animated Caballeros searching for Donald. They eventually find him dancing to a mariachi band with locals; Panchito and Jose pull Donald away just in time for the concert in Mexico City, complete with Fireworks. From the attractions opening until late 2015, the performance was a projected cartoon. In late 2015 the concert scene of the attraction was updated to include the Three Caballeros animatronics from the Mickey Mouse Revue. Mickey Mouse Revue was an opening day Walt Disney World attraction, making the animatronics 50 years old. This video includes the concert scene with both the Animated and animatronic versions. Making Walls Talk Disney Historical Sites and Museums in Conversation:  Bret Iwan, the voice of Mickey Mouse chats with representatives from the Walt Disney Hometown Museum, The Walt Disney Family Museum, The Walt Disney Birthplace and the Carolwood Foundation.  The panel included a presentation from each of the four locations followed by a Question and Answer session.  

"Harmonious," one of the largest nighttime spectaculars ever created for a Disney park. While the technology, including pyrotechnics, choreographed moving fountains, lighting, massive LED panels, and media are impressive, it’s the music that pulls the story together. The show features new interpretations of classic Disney songs in more than a dozen languages, performed by a diverse group of 240 artists from around the world, including Luis Fonsi, Joy, Danny Gokey, and the Ndlovu Youth Choir. I spent some time with Clint Clarke, Audio Designer for Disney Parks Live Entertainment. We talked about the impact of music and the process of Designing the Audio for one of the largest nighttime spectaculars ever created in a Disney park.

As you enter Walt Disney World’s Disney Hollywood Studios, you arrive on Hollywood Blvd, and the Hollywood that always was, but never will be. The golden age of Hollywood 1920s/30s and Mickey Mouse is a Star, ever since steamboat willy in 1928, people have been lining up to see Mickey on the big screen. The theater is about to host the World Premier of Mickey’s latest short, “Perfect Picnic,” And you are just in time to experience it first hand. And this attraction, more than any, provides a different experience band on where you sit in the train. From this point of view, we are sitting in the first row of the last train car, so we enter the rooms last, getting to see how the story unfolded while the first car has moved to the next room. The Epcot International Festival of the Arts has plenty of reasons to join the artistic celebration.   So, for 2020, what are the top 20 things to do?   Let’s count them down.

Start by arriving via the Disney Skyliner.  With Future World and the main entrance under considerable construction, the incredible views from the Skyliner, along with the newly refurbished International Gateway, make it a remarkably refreshing entrance to Epcot.  As you “skyline” into the gateway, be sure to check out the construction of Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure.  The Gusteau’s sign was recently installed, and the attraction is set to open this summer.   From International Gateway, you’ll find yourself right in the middle of the festival.

As soon as you enter, be sure to get your Festival Passport, Map and most important, Times Guide.   Check the Festival Entertainment Schedule right away – wait, is that Mickey and Minnie right at the entrance?  It sure is.  Check that Times Guide, the construction has closed Character Spot, but the characters have scattered all around the park.

 

The spirited performers of the Bluer13 Dance Company turn up the fun with traditional dances that celebrate Diwali and build to a Bollywood party for all. Blue13 Dance Company is an American dance ensemble based in Los Angeles, California. According to backstory, Peter Quill, AKA, Star-Lord, once visited EPCOT as a child in the 1980s. He loved the experience so much that he suggested Walt Disney Word’s Epcot would be the perfect place for Xandarians to connect with Terrans. Xandarians are from the planet Xandar in the Andrama Galaxy, and Terrans being their word for humans on our planet Earth. That Peter Quill suggestion resulted in the first other-world showcase pavilion at Walt Disney World’s Epcot “The Wonders of Xandar.”

The Wonders of Xandar Pavilion is located in Epcot’s World Discovery and features three main sections:

The Galaxarium: a sweeping planetarium-style space showcasing planets, stars, and other intergalactic wonders that connect Terra and Xandar – reinforcing the notion that we’re all born of the same space dust.

In the Galaxarum, you’ll meet The Xandarian supercomputer, Worldmind, whose purpose is to preserve the knowledge and history of Xandar. Most of the knowledge Worldmind has collected regarding Teran, aka Earth, comes from Peter Quill – “Terrans love music that moves your soul.” Understanding Terrans is just one of the many reasons Xandarans have opened the Wonders of Xandar Pavilion at Epcot. Worldmind provides the narration that gives us context to the stunning visuals in the queue area, along with some intriguing questions like Where is Johnny going and is he being good? Why only the turkey leg, what about the rest of the creature? Milkey Way is a curious name for a galaxy; why?

The complete loop rounds a little over 30 minutes, and I hope this is your only opportunity to experience it in its entirety.

MagicBand+ Unlocks New Interactive Experiences at Walt Disney World Resort

Disney PhotoPass service and more. The next-generation MagicBand+ will retain those popular features and add new functionality to unlock experiential moments of magic throughout the Walt Disney World theme parks and resorts. After a guest enters a theme park, MagicBand+ will come alive at various times with color-changing lights, haptic vibrations, and gesture recognition, enhancing the environment’s storytelling. The wearable will allow guests to engage with favorite Disney moments in new ways and discover new interactive experiences, including:

• Guests can embark on the “Disney Fab 50 Quest,” a scavenger hunt throughout the four Walt Disney World theme parks using MagicBand+ to help spread pixie dust and interact with the golden character sculptures. With the Play Disney Parks app, guests can dive deeper into the experience to find hints and keep track of sculptures which will unlock digital achievements, including an augmented reality feature.

• In the “Star Wars: Batuu Bounty Hunters” experience, guests can join the Batuu Bounty Hunters’ Guild in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Using their MagicBand+ to find numerous virtual bounties hidden throughout Black Spire Outpost, guests will follow the band’s light patterns and haptics to complete their mission. Then they will return to the local guild master, who will reward them with galactic credits. Guests can also use the Play Disney Parks mobile app to help them reveal their virtual bounty using the app’s built-in augmented reality thermal viewer

• Guests can experience nighttime spectaculars in a new way as they see their bands light up and complement the magic in the skies, including the new “Harmonious” at EPCOT and “Disney Enchantment” at Magic Kingdom Park.

"Hey, Disney!’ Adds Magic to Amazon Alexa and Echo Devices

The history of The Walt Disney Company is full of successful corporate collaborations, producing innovative experiences everywhere from World’s Fairs to Tomorrowlands to the pavilions of EPCOT and beyond. Now Disney is creating its own custom voice assistant using Alexa technology for supported Amazon Echo devices. Called “Hey Disney!”, this digital voice assistant will work alongside Alexa to respond to vocal prompts, bringing Disney characters and stories to life in magical new ways to make guest stays more convenient, engaging, and enjoyable.

“Hey, Disney!” will begin rolling out in select Disney Resort hotel guest rooms across Walt Disney World later this year as part of the vacation destination’s 50th-anniversary celebration. Access will be offered as an optional, complementary feature during guest stays. “Hey Disney!” will make the services Alexa users know and love – weather forecasts, timers, alarms, etc. – magical with the help of more than 25 popular characters including Mickey Mouse, Olaf, Rocket, and Groot, Princess Tiana, and many more. “Hey, Disney!” also features an all-new character, the Disney Magical Companion, who will help guests discover more than a thousand magical interactions, such as hearing special greetings and jokes from authentic Disney character voices, and asking trivia questions, and exploring audio environments inspired by Disney films and destinations. Guests of Disney Resort hotels will be able to learn helpful information about their vacation (“Hey Disney! When does the next bus to EPCOT depart?”), order room amenities (“Hey Disney! Can we have some extra towels?”) and more. “Hey Disney!” will also be available for purchase in the U.S. for supported Amazon Echo devices via the Amazon Alexa Skills Store, inviting Disney fans to make every day at home more magical. With over 25 resorts, Walt Disney World has something for everyone.  No matter what your price range, you’re sure to find theming and an immersive environment.  Each resort has its own unique charm, and some have exclusive activities.  When it comes to value resorts, Disney’s Pop Century is my favorite; it’s a nostalgic look at the unforgettable fads of the 1950s through the 1990s.  The Disney Skyliner station connection the resort and Art of Animation to the Carriean Beach Station, continuing to Disney Hollywood Studios or Epcot isn’t a bad addition at all 

The icons are unmistakable, from the 1950s Lady and the Tramp, and bowling pins, 1960’s Yo-Yos Hippie flowers, and Play-Doh.  The 1970s 8-Track tapes, Disco and Big Wheel, the 1980s Rubik’s cube and Rodger Rabbit and Cell Phones and Laptops of the 1990s.   Pop Century is a salute to the timeless fashions, catchphrases, toys, and dances of those decades.

When you checked in, did you notice the Shadowboxes along the way across from the check-in counters?   Those shadowboxes tell the story of the decades, the story of the resort.  Pre-Covid, on select days the resort front desk staff would conduct a “Shadowbox Tour.” The tour typically started around 3:30, so if you’re like me, at 3:30 in the afternoon in Walt Disney World, I would be in one of Walt Disney World’s Theme Parks.  So the Shadowbox tour is one of those things I always wanted to do, but who has the time?  Well, one day back in 2014 headed back to Pop Century to get ready for the Not So Scary Halloween Party, and that was my opportunity to record the tour, not just any tour, a private tour for you and me!  That tour is this episode of SamsDisneyDiary. An attraction based on Winnie the Pooh dates back to 1977 and the "Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh" Animated feature.  Imagineers made multiple attempts to bring pooh Bear to Disneyland – but Pooh Bear didn't make the cut for Disneyland's new fantasyland in 1983 or Mickey's Toon town in 1993.  In fact, Roger Rabbit's cartoon spin was based on a "spinnable" honey pot designed for a Winnie the Pooh attraction that never happened.

A resurgence in Pooh's popularity in the mid-1990s, and the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh animated series,  led to the development of a Winnie the Pooh attraction in Walt Disney Worlds' magic kingdom.   The Many Adventure of Winnie the pooh would open in June of 1999, replacing the popular Mr. Toad's Wild Ride.  You can find a hidden Mr. Toad in the Walt Disney World Attraction, a framed photo of Mr. Toad passing the dead for the building to Owl.

Three years later in 2003, The Many Adventure of Winnie the Pooh would move into Disneyland's new Critter Country, the renamed Bear Country.  Like its Walt Disney World cousin, you can find a reference to the Country Bears in the Disneyland version of The Many Adventure of Winnie the Pooh.  Directly behind you toward the end of the attraction, you can spot Max, Buff, and Melvin on the wall, waiting for the next performance of Country Bears.

So while you can ride the many adventures of Winnie the pooh in both Walt Disney World and Disneyland, the attraction replaced Mr. Toad in Florida and Country Bears in California.  But you can still ride Mr. Toad in California and watch country bears in Florida.  Go it?  Good!

Enter a world where the ocean floor is full of life and Ariel longs to stroll and dance with humans.  Sing along with colorful puppets, live performers, special effects, and film clips from the animated classic. the Little Mermaid.  Voyage of the little mermaid opened at Disney MGM Studios all the way back in 1992.   A lot has changed in almost 30 years, including the name of the park, now Disney Hollywood Studios.   The Theme begins as you pass through the doors into a room filled with undersea items, including fishing nets, and old diver’s suit, and lots of sea creatures. The Unique Live Actions performance combines special effects, film clips live performance, and puppetry to re-tale the story of the Little mermaid, well, as much as you can tell in 17 minutes.   Sebastian the crab and his hot crustacean band perform Under the Sea while Ariel yearns to be “Part of Your World.”  Ursula is nearby to grand Ariel the perfect wish

Sergio, the Italian Mime, is back at Epcot's World Showcase, Sergio along with most other live Epcot Entertainment offerings, fell victim to the Walt Disney World COVID-19 shut down in March of 2020. While Sergio wasn't part of the July 2020 reopening, we are happy to report that Sergio is Back and performing multiple shows at Epcot's Italy Pavilion; check the My Disney Experience App for showtimes. What’s better than the Disneyland Band or the Dapper Dans? How about the Disneyland Band and the Dapper Dans at the same time!!!! YES, it’s true, and it happens every day at Disneyland! Be sure to check your Times Guide and look for the Disneyland Band and the Dapper Dans performance that starts at the same time (12:30 for this video). The Disneyland Band starts right in front of Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, and the band marching through the castle to form a performance line is a wonderful sight. They kick right off with a medley of Disney Classics, including A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes, performed only as the Disneyland Band can. The band is joined by Donald, Goofy, Pluto, Chip, Dale, Mickey and Minnie for the Most Magic March on Earth from the castle right down Main Street USA, led by Mickey of course. Who could that be halfway down Main Street USA? That’s the Dapper Dans in the middle of their 12:30 performance, but who can resist a parade? The Dapper Dans join right in marching the rest of the way to Town Square where the Disneyland Band, Dapper Dans, and Mickey and all his friends perform on the steps of the Main Street Train Station; indeed, “Welcome to our family time!” Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more.

I was able to participate in a media preview that included an early screening of the film, a look at new products including toys games and collectibles associated with the film along with a press conference featuring some of the voice actors along with Director Josh Cooley and Producers Jonas Rivera and Mark Nielsen. There may be slight unintentional spoilers in the Q&A… fair warning. Overall, this film is marvelous, it’s the perfect extension to the toy story franchise with a great mix of familiar characters, alongside new characters on an unexpected adventure… it’s perfect and you need to see it!!!

Once Upon a Time (Walt Disney World Cinderella Castle Projection Show) In 2011, The Magic, The Memories and You ushered in the age of projection mapping using Cinderella’s Castle as a canvas. The original show featured images of guests from throughout the day – It debuted in 2011 and was updated in 2012 with “Celebrate the Magic”, both previously featured on SamsDisneyDiary. The Current Projection Show “Once Upon a Time” made its debut in 2016. Based on a similar nighttime show at Tokyo Disneyland. The show is a bedtime story told by Mrs. Potts to her son Chip. Mrs. Potts recounts cherished moments in Disney Animation that all start with “Once Upon A Time..”. Stories include Cinderella, Peter Pan, Frozen, Alice in Wonderland, and Beauty and the Beast. The Walt Disney World dapper dans have been entertaining guests since opening day at Walt Disney World. Having recently returned after a Covid-19 break you can find the Dapper Dans you can typically find the Dapper Dans Up and Down Main Street performing American Standards like Yankee Doodle Dandy, Mr. Sandman, and Zip-a-dee doo dah. Sometimes you can find them on board the main street trolly performing, worth following if you ask me. Last year for Christmas I focused on the current, SamsDisneyDiary 12 days of Christmas, featuring 12 different Disney parks’ Christmas events covering Florida and California parks.  This year, we are going back in time.   Back 30 years to be exact, to the 1987 Walt Disney World Very Merry Christmas Day Parade.   Originally aired 30 years ago on Christmas morning, the concept was very similar to today; a preview of what’s new at Walt Disney World and what to expect in the next few years. 

A 90 minute long commercial so to speak.   And in 1987, it was the dawn of the Michael Eisner “Disney Decade”, the beginning of a massive decade long expansion of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.

I don’t know about you, but I love looking back at these time capsules; a look into the parks, what’s new, what’s on the horizon some of which made it and some that didn’t.  It’s also interesting that after 30 years, the conversation continues.  While we watch this year’s Christmas day “parade” (if you want to call it a parade), the conversation will be centered on the new ToyStoryland, opening in 2018 and Star Wars Galaxy Edge opening in 2019.

1987 marked the 5th annual Christmas day parade from Walt Disney World originally airing on Christmas day 1987.  I hope you enjoy this look back 30 years as much as I did.

The GFSO – The Grand Floridian Society Orchestra, the source of the elegant melody you heard countless times walking through the lobby of Disney’s Grand Floridian, recently ended its 32-year engagement at Walt Disney World. The 6-piece orchestra delivered classic renditions of ragtime, Dixieland Jazz, Traditional jazz, and as well as Disney Classics, adding to the elegance of the Grand Floridian Resort.

As part of the Walt Disney World 50th, Anniversary Celebration Walt Disney World theme park icons are transformed into magnificent Beacons of Magic, coming to Life with their own EARidescent glow. Epcot’s Spaceship earth is among those Icons. As originally promised the Epcot lighting will continue beyond the 50th anniversary as a new defining feature of the park. This is an hour-long look at Spaceship earth during the Epcot International Festival of the Arts 2022.

The new Connections Café and Eatery is home to a quick-service dining location as well as Starbucks coffee. With show kitchens and a variety of seating options, this new dining option encourages guests to connect with one another over food and drinks. Adding to the park’s rich legacy of original art displays, Connections Eatery features a hand-painted mural stretching more than 160 feet along the back wall, celebrating how food is cultivated around the world.

Walt Disney World first opened to guests on October 1st, 1971, with some news outlets predicting over 300,000 visitors on day one. 

In an attempt to limit crowds, and not repeat the opening day chaos of Disneyland in California, official dedications and other media events were held off until later in the month. The actual crowd on opening day was closer to 10,000, providing an opportunity to address any potential issues that would undoubtedly come up during the first day, and they did.

Maps of the Disney Parks – A 143-page hardcover book from Disney Editions that traces the history of Disney Parks through maps, but not your standard park map. The book features: concept art, maps for things that never happened, attraction maps providing a real history lesson of Disney Parks. From the pre-opening day, original concepts of Disneyland and the latest concept maps, “Maps of the Disney Parks” is a Disney historian must have reference. From maps of Tom Sawyer Island, Pirates of the Caribbean, It’s a Small World, to preview maps of Nature’s Wonderland, EPCOT Center and Typhoon Lagoon, I can spend the better part of the day just looking at the details. 

My recent purchase reminded me of the D23 Expo 2017 Breakout Session of the same title, a session I circled early on as a must do at the conference. Little did I know that this session would be Marty Sklar’s second to last public appearance; excusing himself toward the end of the session so he could prepare for the Legends of Imagineering ceremony (Full content in SamsDisneyDiary #94), his final public appearance.

The panel included Vanessa Hunt, Imagineer and the Curator of the Disney Archives Art Library, including about 130,000 pieces of original art. She is also the curator credited with all of the art work in the book, and Co-Author of the Disney Attractions Poster book. Marty Sklar, Imagineering Ambassador, Disney Legend and an attendee with first-hand knowledge of the opening of every Disney Park. The panel also included some details on Sam McKim who was credited with many original Disney maps, his son Matt McKim, who is currently a Disney Imagineer, joined the panel.  

From souvenir maps, fun maps, land maps, parks maps in the US and abroad in Paris, Tokyo and Shanghai, the panel covered the history of the maps adding additional information on the fly.   The session included maps that did not make the book, and some on the fly explanations from Marty as to why some original maps are gone. That’s really what makes these D23 Breakout Sessions so special, and why I love the D23 Expo.

Disneyland Forever, premiered at Disneyland on May 21, 2015, as part of the 60th-anniversary celebration.  Disneyland Forever was the first Disney park fireworks show to feature projection mapping.   The technology was use on Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, It’s a small world, and Main Street USA.   It featured a new theme song “Live the Magic” and an exit song written by Richard Sherman that reflects on Walt’s Original vision of Fireworks, “A Kiss Goodnight” Here is my footage of the show from Mainstreet and It’s a Small World.

With great fanfare, Epcot celebrated its 35th Anniversary this past October 1st. The Epcot 35 Commemorative Ceremony included an Epcot Musical Tribute by the legendary “Voices of Liberty” – including songs like Making Memories, Veggie Veggie Fruit Fruit; One Little Spark and Horizons. There were also special D23 Presentations and a special Epcot 35 Tribute following Illuminations that evening – Illuminations 35. I was lucky to represent The Disney Nerds Podcast and attend some of the media events, including interviews with Imagineers, the Vice President of Epcot and a 35 Year Epcot Cast Member. A major part of that festival is the “Eat to the Beat” Concert series.   Eat to the Beat is a nightly concert series featuring popular bands from the 80s, 90s, and 2000s included with Epcot admission. Eat to the Beat features 3 performances a night during the festival.   For Epcot 35, the series featured its first country performer, Marc Wills. That’s Marc wearing an “Epcot 35 I was There” T-Shirt – and as it turns out, Marc is a huge Disney fan. In fact, Mark is the self proclaimed ‘Disney Fanatic of Country Music” – and I had an opportunity to ask him a few questions earlier in the day.   This episode of SamsDisneyDiary features parts of the interview and concert from Epcot 35.

In the Anandapur village of Disney’s Animal Kingdom, you can once again discover exotic tunes that become increasingly mesmerizing, tranquil, and stirring. The simmering sounds of traditional Indian melodies performed by Chakranadi on the sitar, a 19 sitar interment with moveable frets, dating back to the days of the Maharaja and the beliefs that Music and Nature are deeply connected, and each note of the musical scale originated with a different animal, Chakranadi performs Celebration, Cashmere Express, LeapFrog, late for the moon.

More entertainment has returned to Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, and we were there for the first return performance of Mickey’s Magical Friendship Fair, an updated version of Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire including a new opening number for Walt Disney World’s 50th anniversary. The show takes place multiple times a day on the Cinderella Castle Stage. Staring the Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, and Goofy the show celebrates classic and contemporary Disney Characters in a magical, musical extravaganza featuring lively dancing, dazzling effects, and music from Tiana and friends from Princess and the Frog, Rapunzel and Flynn from Tangled along with Anna, Elsa, and Olaf from Frozen.

Be sure to check the Entertainment Schedule for showtimes, keeping in mind this outdoor performance could be canceled due to inclement weather.

Shortly after the opening of Walt Disney World’s Toy Story Land, Disney Parks presented “To Infinity and Beyond”, a look at what’s next from Disney Parks and Resorts all over the world.  The presentation took place at The Walt Disney World Coronado Springs Resort, which is currently in the middle of a major renovation itself, a 15 story expansion to be exact.

The presentation included Gorge Kalogridjs, President Walt Disney World Resort; Catherine Powell, President Disney Parks Western Region; Kathy Mangum, Kevin Rafferty, Charita Carter and Scott Mallwitz from Walt Disney Imagineering; Laurie Jordan, Senior Vice President, Disney Parks Live Entertainment, and a special Q&A Round Table.

Journey through ancient and modern China during a spectacular 14-minute Circle-Vision 360° film. Reflections of China located in the China Pavillion of Epcot's World Showcase. The show premiered in May 2003, replacing the opening day Wonders of China 360 movie. The show is narrated by an actor playing Li Bai, an ancient Chinese poet, who takes the viewer on a tour of the Chinese countryside and historical structures and buildings. As of this video, Reflections of China is scheduled to close in December 2021, replacing a new film, "Wondrous China" – Part of the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary Celebration and the first Disney Circle-Vision file produced and projected in a seamless format. Some sites that are seen are The Great Wall of China, The Forbidden City in Beijing, the Terracotta Army in Xi'an, Hunan, Guilin, Suzhou, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

Cinderella Castle is the ultimate theme park icon and the perfect backdrop for a classic Disney stage show.   The current show, Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire, has been making daily performances since June 2016.  The castle stage saw some refurbishment along with the hub, expanding viewing locations and making the area more guest friendly.  The 23-minute musical celebration is hosted by none other than Mickey and Minnie.  In total, 15 Disney characters from different stories come together to showcase the discoveries you can make through friendship.

The Merry Makers have invited guests from other lands to join them in a grand celebration.  In addition to Mickey and Minnie, the show features Donald, Daisy, and Goofy with appearances from the newest Disney Classics: Frozen, Tangled, and The Princess and the Frog.

Check your time's guide, Mickey’s Royal Friendship Faire is presented multiple times a day.

The new Connections Café and Eatery is home to a quick-service dining location as well as Starbucks coffee. With show kitchens and a variety of seating options, this new dining option encourages guests to connect with one another over food and drinks. Adding to the park’s rich legacy of original art displays, Connections Eatery features a hand-painted mural stretching more than 160 feet along the back wall, celebrating how food is cultivated around the world.

Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary kick-off was full of announcements, and just a few weeks before all of the anniversary announcements, Epcot opened it's new flagship store, "The Creations Shop". Replacing Mouse Gear, the Creations Shop features a new sleek design with bright and welcoming colors, including a magnificent Mickey Mouse Mural. In addition to offering some 50th Anniversary Celebration merchandise, the Creations shop also carries it's own exclusive line of Merchandise. The Epcot Light & Color Collection. What do The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Fraggle Rock, and Muppet Babies all have in common? Jim Henson, of course! And before his passing, "A Muppet Family Christmas" united all of the muppets across franchises into a single Muppet Christmas special. This HD Version includes just about all of the original broadcast. Due to the complexity and distribution of rights, some segments may be missing and aired only during the original December 16, 1987 telecast. With a special cameo appearance by Jim Henson himself, this is a must for fans of every muppet franchise and a reminder of a much simpler time.

Since 2011, Disneyland guests have been treated to the daily “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade”. The afternoon and sometime nighttime parade is led by none other than Mickey Mouse himself with his syncopated drum line. Mickey’s Soundsational Parade travels from Town Square to It’s a Small World with the direction alternating every day.

Mickey is followed by troops or energetic dancers, musicians and many of his friends. It’s a music celebration… Come on, come on, come on; Strike up the band. Feel the beat. What a great sensation. Come on, come on, come on; Move and clap your hands. Get into the spirit. Let everyone hear it. So come on, come on Soundsational. Whoa, whoa - hey, hey, hey. Whoa, whoa - hey, hey!

EPCOT Center, Walt Disney World’s second gate opened to the public on October 1, 1982.  By all accounts, however, October 1st was really soft opening, with only Spaceship Earth being dedicated on that day. A grand opening week was held from October 15-27 for celebrates, Press, VIPs and top executives from corporate sponsors. The television special Epcot Center: The Opening Celebration aired on CBS October 23, 1982, the night before the official park dedication. You can still find the dedication plaque from then CEO E. Cardon Walker dated October 24th, 1982 at the entrance of the park.

Welcome back, as we continue our journey deeper into the wonders of Xandar pavilion in World Discovery of Walt Disney World Epcot, past the 30-minute Galaxarum, where we meet The Xandarian supercomputer, Worldmind. Catch the entire loop here; next, we move into the Xandar Gallery. We discover more about the Xandarian people, culture, and history from the original Guardians of the Galaxy Movie. Scale Models and videos create a museum-like experience comparing our world to Xandar, setting the stage for the main attraction.

Walt’s kiss goodnight, Fireworks.  A perfect ending to a fantastic day at any Disney Park.   Today it is so much more than the first Disneyland fireworks back in 1956.  It’s hard to imagine that those simple fireworks, individually light by cast members, would have evolved into full-scale production, including Projections, synchronized music, and more explosives that Walt could have imagined.

Happily, Ever After, premiered in 2017 creating the question, Should I be watching the sky for Fireworks or the castle for Projections????   The answer… YES!!!  The storytelling is amazing and the rewatch ability is highlighted by the projections and fireworks together.

Looking to take in as many Walt Disney World Magic Kingdom attractions as possible with the shortest wait times and maybe a brand-new Villains Stage Show?  Throw in some free face painting, exclusive merchandise and food offerings along with free popcorn, ice cream treats, and bottled beverages, and you have Disney’s newest after-hours event.  “Disney Villains After Hours”  The new hard tickets event runs every Thursday through August 8th 2019 (Excluding July 4th) – Check disneyworld.com/villainsafterhours for details… tickets are $139 per person ($144 day of) and grant you access to the Magic Kingdom at 7:00pm on event night; plenty of time to catch the Happily Ever After fireworks show and get a couple of attractions in before the event starts.  Annual Passholder and DVC members get $30 off the listed price.  The event starts at 10pm until 1am; you’ll get the shortest wait times you have ever experienced – and you can experience special villains themed overlays at Space Mountain and Pirates of the Caribbean.  With over 20 attractions open, the only attractions with a wait time longer than 5 minutes were Pirates (15), Space (20) and Mine Train (15) so the only real question is, where do you start?   In addition to the free snacks, specialty food and beverages could be found through the park.      Maleficent the Dragon was roaming the parade route throughout the night, and the castle stage was taken over by Disney Villains with the new “Villains Unite the Night” castle stage show,  and that’s this episode of SamsDisneyDiary – Disney Villains Unite the Night

New for the summer of 2019 just past the Rock and Roller Coaster in the Sunset Showplace you’ll find Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy.  The courtyard outside the academy is a perfect spot to get a picture with Cruz Ramirez and the Piston Cup.  Don’t forget to check your times guide for DJs dance party –“DJ’s Ready! Set! Party Time!” where you gather around DJ for Cars-inspired dances and games.  Then cruise on inside for the Racing Academy.  The Academy premiered on March 31, 2018.  The show lasts about 10 minutes, inviting guests into the world of Pixar animated, “Cars”, where you become a rookie racer and learn the rules of the road from Piston Cup champion Lightning McQueen himself.  Lightning appears live on stage with a 17-foot-tall wraparound screen stretching more than 200 feet across.  Lightning shares racing knowledge he gathered over the course of his career- and if there’s one thing he’s learned?  Things don’t always go the way they are supposed to, but with some help from your friends – you’ll get back on track.  Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more SamsDisneyDiary.com, Youtube.com/SamsDisneydiary

Epcot’s American Adventure Pavilion is home to the Voices of Liberty, a staple of World Showcase since Epcot’s opening in 1981. The melodies are echoes through the acoustically perfect dome that helps amplify and purify their sound. Traditionally costumed in their 1800’s best for Epcot’s Festival of the Holidays, the cappella group becomes the Dickens Carolers, embracing the sounds of the holiday festival. With scheduled performances throughout the day, you will find the Voices of Liberty as the Dickens Carolers inside the American Adventure rotunda. They are a must-see during the holiday season.

I have been extremely fortunate to be able to participate in select media events at Walt Disney World. Collecting content and interviews to share with you! And I am grateful for your support in watching and subscribing to this channel.

Every once in a while, those media events include a “special reception”. For the Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival, 2022 festival 2022 media was treated to Garden Reception in the United Kingdom Pavilion of Epcot’s World Showcase. That reception includes background music from some of the most talented entertainers I’ve seen in some time. While most consider them background, I consider them a huge part of the evening.
