Episode 6 of the podcast is live and under the new umbrella title of Ruddle Me This! It's the same general formula, me talking with a guest that I find interesting, except we're not limiting ourselves entirely to poster based discussions, although I have found the format of asking the guests about posters meaningful to them to be a great conversation topic so we will invariably see more episodes about posters, I just wanted to change it up so that it's not the only thing I can talk about with my guests.

In this episode Jeff Clark, Christchurch based musical improviser talks me through his 20 year career in improv, as well as his stints working as the marketing manager for a couple of theatre companies and an arts festival. We get into the nuts and bolts of marketing for a theatre, and then move into the poster Jeff brought with him, Raiders of the lost ark. We chat about Multiverse stuff a bit, and whether Star Wars has entered it's own Multiverse phase much like the Marvel Cinematic Universe has. Taylor even learns that Rhian Johnson directed one of the Star Wars movies he hasn't seen. As you can imagine when you get a couple of nerds in a room, many geeky tangents ensue!

In this episode we hear part 2 of my interview with Jeff Clark in which we talk about his alter ego Gary Starlight who he performs some incredible musical comedy as, the first time I saw him do it my mind was blown and I was really appreciative of being able to do a deep dive with Jeff and asking all of the questions I've had on my mind since I've known him. We get into the origins of the character and how his mind works when he is playing Gary, it's very fascinating to hear. We then move on to his experimental stand-up show Infinite Jeff a multiverse type show about where his life might have ended up if he didn't become an improviser. We head off on a couple of tangents about an experimental comedy set idea that Jeff has, as well as how amazing public libraries are and the litany of amazing services they provide. We wrap things up by breaking down the first ever comedy poster I designed, Jeff gives me some very kind but very insightful feedback.

I sat down with one of my favourite comics and people in general, Big Jimmy Small. Jimmy imparts a lifetime of passion for football on me in just over an hour. I'd been wanting to have Jim explain to me the ins and outs of British football for the longest time, even more so now that I've gotten so into Ted Lasso. Had a great time chatting with Jim, the conversation mainly skewed towards the business and culture side of football, but he also told me a bunch of stuff about how the game is played. Definitely keen to get Jim back some time and have him explain more, I just enjoyed listening to him talk about football.

In today's episode, I chat through an idea I had when I was around 15 or 16 years old. I started creating a flash animation of the story but possibly due to moving house or a PC dying I never got around to working on it any more. I always liked the idea for the setting, the magic system and the characters so it's never left my head all this time. I decided it would be great to bring Hamish, a fellow comic and fantasy fan onto the podcast where I could rattle off my story and ideas to him, and he could help me flesh it out as well as suggest some ideas of his own. We intended to only go for 40 minutes but we got so wrapped up in the discussion I decided to just let it roll and we've ended up with quite a long-y. If you're into worldbuilding, fantasy, comics, anime, storytelling and all that juicy stuff you'll probably really enjoy this episode, but if that's not for you then I won't begrudge you for skipping it. You might also just like to listen to me and Hamish chat for an hour, he has a very pleasing voice and I've been told the same about mine. Hope you enjoy!

This time I decided to try out a "Two Dudes Talking" style podcast and went in without any ideas in mind, just wanted to have a chat to Steve who's a good friend of mine. Steve's a very funny comic, as well as a talented musician and artist. He loves cats too, so he's a true triple threat. We start out talking about the kings birthday holiday which was the day recorded it, and moved onto James Bond, what would a New Zealand James Bond movie be like, and then we moved into chatting about Steve more; how long has he been doing music and comedy, how did he get his start, and all those juicy details. It's a fun chat, and I hope you enjoy a change of pace for this one!

I've been writing and designing for the best NZ based satire news page, The Lamington for about 3 months now and I thought it would be cool to have a chat with Danny & Fin the 2 lads behind the project. We went through the origins of the idea, how they followed through and got it off the ground, what's in store for the future of The Lamington and then we went through a couple of our sizzle reels, headlines we wished had got through but didn't for whatever reason. The interview was rife with technical issues, recording online and trying to sync up 3 conversations was a new podcasting challenge for me, and we ended up losing big chunks of the interview but what we did keep is still a great listen. I hope it makes up for the massively long episode last week.

We discuss why this album was meaningful to Aimée, some of the themes contained in the lyrics and talk about how this album and Lily Allen in general has influenced Aimée's art thus far. I first met Steve last year when we performed on the Kids Day Out Variety Show together. I think I was the first person to do stand-up to children on that tour. Steve and I stayed in touch and have gigged together sporadically since. Today Steve offered to teach me all about Contact Juggling, a version of juggling that I had no idea was so rare of a skill, as well as relatively recent. We get into the history of contact juggling, as well as Steve's ambition to create an act that contributes to the art form. If you know me at all, you know that I love pro wrestling. I missed the boat during the 90s when it was booming but discovered it when I was 17 or 18 years old and have been a fan ever since. Dave Adams is a Christchurch-based stand-up comedian originally from Wellington and he's also a huge fan. In this podcast we seek to give the casual viewer an insight into the baffling popularity of "fake fighting." In this episode I reflect on the experience of my first ever stand up comedy tour. In October 2023 David Correos and I did a 20-show new material tour around most of the South Island of New Zealand. This sort of thing is very uncommon in NZ even amongst professional comedians so I wanted to share my thoughts and feelings about this incredible experience while they were still fresh in my mind. I talked about what went well, what could have gone better as well as the whole ton of stuff that I learnt from being on the tour.

It was such a good experience and to have it go off as my first ever touring experience makes me feel very lucky. I look forward to doing it next year again! (Spoiler? Maybe!)

I will do an episode with David on the show too, but for now I thought I'd like to do one solo to help process what we did.

I've been wanting to create a different "flavour" of the podcast for when I do these solo talking (unhinged rambling) episodes and as I talk about in this episode I was inspired by the recent The Escapist exodus to return to my roots a bit and revive the name Ramblin' With Ruddle.

In this episode Ruddle rambles about Copyright, Transparency and Corporate greed through the lens of the Escapist's recent exodus and the founding of Second Wind that followed. It's a really exciting and inspirational story, if you're into that sort of thing then definitely have a read, it was covered by the BBC!

Terribly sorry about missing the usual Christmas / Boxing day upload for State of the Ramble, everything fell to bits all at once; I was losing my voice, had about 3 gigs coming up that I needed said voice for, and the first recording of SOTR2023 clocked in at a whopping 43 minutes AND to top it off I had messed up the audio mastering and it ended up unlistenable.

In this episode I'm joined by writer, director and comedian Dan Bain to chat about his upcoming theatre project, an adaptation of The Odyssey that'll be playing right here in Christchurch over the summer.

We get into how the project came about, what had to be cut for time, how he landed on The Odyssey rather than The Iliad, what we can expect to see from the play, and we cap it off by asking some rapid fire Greek Mythology questions.

It's a really fun episode that'll tickle the parts of your brain that enjoys learning about etymology, culture and the world in general. I had so much fun recording it despite completely tanking the quiz.

Larry Smith and Dan Bublitz Jr are two standup comedians who spend a LOT of time on the road. Stoked to be finally sitting down with Chris Ingham, a comedian from the Manawatū region of NZ and chatting about Ultra Marathon Running. I have an aunt and uncle who are into this so it was great to chat with someone about it. Don't think I'll be partaking in it any time soon, although I've been training to try and hit the city 2 surf 6km run next year! Chris is one of the deadliest gag merchants in NZ and it was a pleasure to have him on the show.

It's just over a week since a year to the day I left my previous job to work as a comedian full time. It's been a year of ups and downs and I've learnt a lot, most of which I tried to document in this episode of the podcasts.

The questions I covered:

1. Did I make any money this year?
2. How much of my runway have I used?
3. How has my lifestyle changed?
4. How are my hands doing? My health in general?
5. How is the podcast doing?

I also talked about these observations:

1. Being a freelance entertainer is all about maintaining relationships, and weeding out the people who aren’t worth your time.
2. Waiting for venues / companies to pay you can be a nightmare
3. You need to be on top of your calendar / schedule, and be thinking ahead. You will get very frustrated with other people’s lack of organisation
4. You’re not obligated to reply to people straight away
5. You’re going to feel like you’re shouting into the void a lot
6. You might find planning activities outside of work too exhausting to bother with
7. Every day is different. You’ll experience some of the weirdest gigs and jobs that you never saw yourself doing
8. You’re going to experience hella ups and downs. You’ll feel like you’re taking 2 steps forward and 1 step back a lot.
9. You have to put yourself out there - you will experience growth from this
10. You will often need to spend money to make money
11. You will really quickly learn the value of your work, and hearing “no” will no longer be devastating
12. You will probably still have a lot of sleepless nights
13. You will feel a new type of satisfaction having paid your bills off the back of your art

Episode 70 already, blimey! If there was a comedy guild award for milking my previous content until it was long dry, I'd be the undisputed winner many years running.

I watched the movie Contagion a couple of weeks ago and it got me thinking about the pandemic again and I'd always wanted to do a comedy special commentary, so I thought I'd kill 2 birds with 1 stone and try my hand at one.

In this episode I play my whole special from 2023 All My Covid Jokes and interject throughout to add context or additional information, talk about lines that got cut or the inspiration behind certain jokes. It was a lot of fun and I hope you enjoy it!

Initially I brought Dayvid on the pod to do a Tiny Joys episode but we just got chatting and next thing I knew it had been an hour and we had been getting DEEP on some paranormal topics. We talked about Dayvid's first couple of experiences, then we got into horror movies where I talked about an idea I've been mulling over for a horror movie featuring a 4 dimensional creature which led into a massive discussion about the dimensions, before capping it off talking about The Roman Empire, as is the way! Matt bares his soul and talks about the incredibly tough night he had in the finals of the Christchurch Raw Comedy Competition and Taylor vows to stage an insurrection in order to defend Matt's honour. The lads then talk about times they've failed in showbiz, most lately Taylor's trip to Twizel where he sold 11 tickets to a show in a theatre that seated 200 people! The big fullas wrap things up with some talk of Fringe Festivals and then take a jaunt down Harry Potter avenue to close things out.

Aside from his joys we also yapped about names for bands that we've been in or thought would be good, stand up comedy, South Park, the ahead-of-its-time professional wrestling character Muhammad Hassan, sports in general, being proud cat daddies, the Roman Empire of course made an appearance and we even have a new jingle for it every time it comes up on the show! We ended with some quick fire questions that led into a discussion about Anime. Listening back I could hear myself laughing and tee-heeing, so I hope you enjoy it too.

In this episode I'm joined by a Christchurch based Therapist, Logan Robinson! Hot dog, he's a proper therapist and everything. We met very randomly as I saw a post he made on Reddit about offering cheap therapy, $60 every 2 weeks so just $30 a week. I felt that that was very generous of him to try and do his bit to help the mental health crisis we've got going on in NZ.

Here's a bit about Logan's specialities: "I'm a professional therapist with specialisation in ADHD/ADD, anxiety, depression, stress and burnout. I have a professional background in Mental Health, Social Work, Coaching and Vocational Rehabilitation alongside experience working with across the spectrum of disability, including neurodiversity."

I thought it would be cool to bring Logan on the pod and have a chat about mental health and he turned out to be a really nice, empathetic guy who seems like he offers practical and realistic solutions to helping your mental health. I reckon I'll bring him back on the pod at some point to yarn some more.

Back from the grave! It's another edition of The Phantom Files, just over a year later than Volume III. As usual I've got some fantastic tales to share, in this episode Rebecca from Volume I makes a return telling us about an entity she created called The Hunter. I play an old radio recording called Bongo In The Pilliga from an Australian radio show called Overnights about the area of Australia called The Pilliga where ghosts and cryptids are rumoured to have been sighted. I retell a story of one of the only instances where Christchurch had a ghost - The Victoria Street Ghost. Tracey Royce of The Quantum Foundation returns to tell us about an entity she saw that we have no way of describing but the story sent chills down my spine to hear it! We close off with a short story about the mythical Cape Reigna here in New Zealand, thought to be the entrance to the underworld in Māori mythology. It's a great episode, hope you like it!

In this episode, I brought back my regular compadre, Hamish Mabon-Ross to discuss the Young Adult horror vampire novel series that we both enjoyed in our youth - The Saga of Darren Shan! I had been feeling really nostalgic for this series as of late and when Hame mentioned that he was also familiar with it, I thought that's it! We need to do an episode of the pod talking about it. We mostly talk about his Cirque Du Freak / Vampire's Assistant / Tunnels of Blood books, but we also do talk about his later work, The Demonata and Zom-B towards the end. It's a bit of a mess in terms of continuity, we jump all over the place as random bits and pieces spark memories about other bits of the books, but I think you'll enjoy it all the same.

I know Darren includes podcasts and videos about his work occasionally in his newsletter the Shanville Monthly so if you're reading this Darren, thanks for the incredible books, I enjoyed them immensely as a kid and I'm sure they must have a part in shaping my personality as I grew up. In this episode I'm joined by Wellington based stand-up comedian, Dan Boerman who just returned from a hell of a run at the Edinburgh Fringe and so wanted to spread some of the wisdom he acquired while over there doing everything solo and yet still having massive crowds with many sold out nights. Some of the things Dan suggested discussing were:

• How I marketed my show without PR/an agent
• Stuff that I wish I knew
• Benefits of Edinburgh / opportunities
• How to not lose lots of money*
• How to not have a mental breakdown*

We also chatted about how to find a venue as well as source some accommodation which I had heard were the two hardest things about doing the EdFringe. It was my first time speaking to Dan face to face and he was a lovely fella. I hope you enjoy it!
