13 Jul 2022 | 282 Bob's Burgers Movie Review | 01:35:19
We're on a roll! A deliciously egg-washed, sesame sprinkled, enriched dough roll! Here's our review of "The Bob's Burgers Movie." We talk the usual: plot, animation, performances, treasonous acts of sedition, bad impressions, budgets... you know... the yoozh
07 Apr 2025 | 306 Horses with Horns | 01:29:04
Obviously we had to talk the two big stories — the resurrection of Coyote vs ACME and all this ChatGPT Ghiblification nonsense — but we also have a go at another Live-Action-with-CG-Character-Hybrid-Disney-Remake trailer and of course... what's going on with A.I. lately. Suffice to say this is definitely an explicit episode so expect the swears. Timestamps:

26 Nov 2014 | Episode 56 - Sugar Pie Honey Butt | 01:30:44
We have so many trailers to talk about this week! CINDERELLA, PEANUTS, and LucasFilm's STRANGE MAGIC which was dropped on our unsuspecting laps. The question is... does it hurt or feel just right? Speaking of feeling just right, we interview the last of the three winners of our #RubberOnionFanArt competition, Ronald Chaparro. And I bring back the Rapid Fire segment so we can adjust the stories you listeners submitted that we didn't have enough time/thought to address as a full story segment. Also, Stephen went to the CTN ANimation Expo 2014 and talks about that experience. Enjoy! CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! Annotations:(05:10) Stephen went to CTNx2014

Did you know that Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" is getting remade as a family friendly Samurai film with cartoon cats and dogs? That's pretty much all we talk about. Another week FULL of stories and interesting topics... and I get a fantastic migraine during the recording this week, because why not? But that doesn't stop us from recording an amazing episode for you all! Because we saw teaser trailers, Brad Bird's would-be take on "The Spirit," a 3D printed animated short, Toon Boom finally going subscription, and two new series (technically one new and one reboot)! Pat couldn't join in this week, so Stephen and Rob decided to discuss their own experiences in building an animation brand (indie and freelance) on the internet, and what trials, tribulations, and learning experiences they had to go through to get where they are now. Just like episode 25, we hope you enjoy this departure from the normal "stories of the week" format and encourage you to join the conversation in the comments section below! 27 Aug 2014 | Episode 43 - Emmy Nom Noms | 01:39:00
The Emmys happened! They're a thing! We talk about the winners and our love for "Bob's Burgers" as well as the Every Simpsons Ever marathon happening on FXX (whatever THAT channel is...). The great Lord/Sir/Mr. Amazing Richard Attenborough passed away and we honor him, but then he honors us right back by giving us maybe the greatest transition we've ever done (divined through Pat, who's back this episode)! And don't say we never did anything for you, because we read another email exchange between a major company asking for free work and an artist who just won't take it anymore (emphasis mine)! 28 Apr 2023 | 289 A.I.n't I a Stinker | 02:14:58
Alternate title of this episode is "A.I... or won't I?" Coudn't decide. This was obviously recorded a few months ago and many things have happened since then but the conversation still remains. There's a lot of threats out there constantly to not just our career but many careers, and the current one centers around deep/machine learning tech known as A.I. We have as open a conversation as we can about it but are simpathetic to whomever is directly affected. It's important that we support each other in this industry while staying realistic about what's coming. There's a path here that might not resolve itself until later but that's one of the things we try to think about. Hope you enjoy this conversation we have about it as we do it in our own often silly way, but would love to hear what you have to think about it as well in the comments. See you there!
29 Apr 2015 | Episode 78 - What is a Creative? | 02:07:53
"What is a Creative?" That's the theme of this week's podcast where Stephen and Rob are flying solo (duo?) on another 'hot cocoa show.' Check out the outline below with timestamps if you want to skip to a particular topic. We talk about why our career (animation) and creative careers in general are a bit different and sometimes hard to relate to by those that aren't in this type of field, what type of pressures we're under and how we cope with them, and the all important topic of wrestling work and personal projects at the same time. What is the deeeallll with objective and subjective criteria?? Drinking game to NOT do... sip whenever I say objective or subjective. Yea, don't do that. My hope for this week's episode is that we articulate why being in a creative field is so weird and seemingly incomprehensible to even those close to us and why that may not matter (and that's a good thing). I kept this episode clean so if you want to send this to someone who you feel doesn't understand you, wants to, and you don't have the words or time to try explaining it... feel free! And let us know what you think about this topic in the comments section below. How do you understand your career? How do you deal with the unique pressures it presents? CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! Annotations:(9:03) It all starts with a message from Billy Dragon Trask

05 Aug 2015 | Episode 92 - PEZ not PES | 01:57:55
TMNT is getting a 2D animated special from Titmouse Inc, the "Guardians of the Galaxy" Disney XD series shows some serious action with its new trailer and Chinese animation shows it's on the rise in a big way with "Rock Dog." There were also two passings we mention this week: wrestler and actor "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and animation historian and reporter John Culhane. In other news, apparently there's a PEZ movie coming (PEZ like the candy not PES the animator... which would be fascinating and wanted). Also, Stephen is back from traveling and as such is in front of a nice sounding mic instead of the patchwork sounds of the tablet you heard for the last few weeks. 13 Feb 2014 | Episode 15 - Everything Is LEGO | 01:51:15
"The LEGO Movie" blew our collective minds this weekend and we had to talk about it... a LOT! But don't worry there are absolutely NO spoilers at all in the discussion. We get into some interesting topics like metamodernism and the new comedy, selling out and how it's a crap concept, and the remix culture and understanding what the soul of a property is. Oh... and we had a WHOLE BUNCH OF TECHNICAL ISSUES! Man alive... for this being the most discussion we've ever had on any subject(s), this was a bad time to have audio go wonkey, mic problems, people cutting in and out. But ever the profession, I have edited this thing together in a Lynchian masterpiece of epic awesomesauce. If you ever leave a comment on one of our podcast episodes, this is the one to do it on. A lot going on here and we'd love to hear what you think! Oh and psst... little secret... stay for the very very end. Hashtag smiley face (that's me trying to understand young culture). Also, in the world of "what-the-what-really-are-you-serious?!"... Sofia Coppola is rumored to be directing a Live-Action "The Little Mermaid." 10 Jun 2015 | Episode 84 - Klaus in the House | 02:23:49
An animated bomb called "Klaus" was dropped on the community this week screaming that hand-drawn animation can visually compete with CG in today's climate. And then the creator, Sergio Pablos, says that he'll talk about the techniques used to create the short trailer at an Annecy talk. That's about as close to a mic-drop as we get in the animation field... so we talk about it... a lot! Other stories include Pixar's "The Good Dinosaur" teaser, Mega Man getting a TV show, Disney adapting another animation into live-action and a bunch more actually (which is why this episode is almost 2.5hrs long)! Also, I drop an announcement this week about the special episode we have coming NEXT week so be sure to listen for that and send me all your questions via this blog post comment section and/or the #RubberOnionPodcast tag on Twitter and Facebook. There's lawsuits, trailers, and two animation use cases of A.I. in the wild that have very different public reactions. Oh and it was my birthday not long ago so Rob prepared a little surprise for me that'll definitely get this auto-flagged on various platforms for copyright because they're always too aggressive and don't take fair use cases into account. Enjoy! Timestamps:

SEGMENT EPISODE! Since the Oscars were last weekend we talked about Animation & the Oscars throughout history, we get an audience question about the 2D vs 3D "rivalry" and apparently Homer Simpson will be LIVE for the first time in an episode in May. This week is a fun combination of a segment episode and a hot cocoa show actually due to the return of a neglected segment... "slow burn!" SEGMENT EPISODE! After such a long break from these you get 2 in a row, how about that! The theme this week is the broad range of animation and that means quality, quantity, and future projections! We talk about some animation news, answer an Audience Question, of course hit up some Rapid Fire segments, and I (Stephen) review Anomalisa on this episode while the written version and the segment by itself will be up tomorrow! We also have a talkback moment about Deadpool since I saw it last week and I make Rob jealous with my gloating. 15 Oct 2014 | Episode 50 - One Year Anniversary Clusterfun | 03:04:37
We wanted to do something special for our anniversary episode, so it was LIVE. We also received a bunch of voicemails from you which made us so happy! But the fates seem to have other things in mind when we had traffic, timezone confusion, and a wrecked computer thrown at us. In a very RubberOnion fashion, though, we decided that computers be damned... we were going to do this! Stephen and Rob huddled around a tablet and Pat kept the stories rolling and we produced an episode of more fun and excitement than we've done in 50 episodes while also sounding the absolute worst. It was like the grindhouse cinema of podcasts! Thank you all again SO much for sending in your voicemails! It was such a big hit, that we've decided to leave that option open for all future episodes. If you have a question for us, a comment, story, or even a rant about something you think we got wrong... call the number on our CONTACT page here and leave a voicemail! Also, as far as we're announcing things: HALLOWEEN FAN ART CONTEST! Submit your fan art of the podcast to our FACEBOOK page before the end of the month (October) and the winner gets caricatured and put in our next podcastimation AND a mini-interview on the podcast! Winners are decided by the three of us and is obviously subjective but we will talk about each one on the podcast and feature them in a gallery on the facebook page. We can't wait to see them! 17 Jun 2015 | Episode 85 - Robb Pratt Interview | 01:36:52
This week we have a special interview with animator Robb Pratt ("Superman Classic," "Flash Gordon Classic"). We talked about how and why he started the Classic series, his thoughts on Superman as a character, Flash Gordon and how he relates to Star Wars, various trials and tribulations navigating the business world of animation entertainment, his recent work on "Wabbit" (the Bugs Bunny animated shorts show) and his absolute love of story and art! Robb was very generous with his time and couldn't have been more fun to talk to. In particular, I loved his insights into the character relation between Bugs Bunny and Superman, the analysis of the Rancor pit scene from "Return of the Jedi" and how he got that creepy voice effect in "Bizarro Classic." (1:11:56) Audience Question #2: "When story-boarding and coming up with ideas for the "Classics" shorts what kinds of things are you looking to achieve overall? For instance is it mostly about re-capturing the nostalgic feel of those old cartoons? Or do you focus more on challenging your own skills, trying things that you may not have had the chance to animate before?" ~Bobby Baxter
(1:16:28) Audience Question #3: "Has he ever seen the Filmation Flash Gordon series and what was his opinion about their take on the character? What is his work flow and what software does he use? Has he thought of doing a full 30 min. episode or feature film (if he was able to get the funding and rights)? What does he have planned next?" ~Timothy Bergeron

12 Aug 2015 | Episode 93 - We Farley Knew Ye | 01:50:18
We finally got to see what Chris Farley's SHREK would've been like in an early story reel which surfaced this week. His passing in 1997 was a big shock to us so there's a lot of discussion surrounding this topic this week. But that's not all because there's a "Bob the Builder" reboot with a new character design who looks... symmetrical, a new Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show coming to Netflix which is 2D (!) and the rights have been secured to make a Dungeons & Dragons movie. That last story also contains the skit this week is Stephen reading excerpts from Ice-T's description of his experience recording the D&D audio book (starting at 1:03:24)... so enjoy that! There are technical discussions as well surrounding the new Windows 10 and a blog post which tried (and failed) to properly compare the budgets of live-action VFX to that of fully CG Animated Films. The questions this week comes from a listener wondering if we're going to CTNx this year, which ticket we bought, and if that's right for her. This is another 2hr podcast so let us keep you entertained while you trudge through the middle of another work-week! CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! 12 Jun 2014 | Episode 32 - Birthday Birthday Something Something | 01:33:43
It's Rob's Birthday!! It was Pat's Birthday last week!! And I still make them talk to me about cartoons! This week, we actually start the discussion with the Angry Video Game Nerd movie, because as Indie creators ourselves we're happy when one of our own (same medium or not) breaks ground on a huge development like this. And you know what? It doesn't stop there, Signe Baumane is another Indie creator who is making her first feature length animated film, "Rocks in my Pockets" and it's got a trailer! Ari Folman is making a jump to a western screen wide release with his hybrid movie and it's got a trailer too... and "Bojack Horseman" is the first original adult animated programming on Netflix and it's got a trailer. Oh and Rocky & Bullwinkle disappoint us. But before all of that... we must sing to you one of the great 90s cartoon anthems. Behold. CLICK HERE to go to the full blog post & leave a comment! This week we talk about Clone Wars coming to Netflix, Annie Leibovitz making our casting game come true, and Rob finds a tumblr that... well... I'll let him explain it. We also talk about a post that made its rounds this week on what it actually means to be an animator. It was short and blunt and we have words about it. This week, a friend and fellow animation geek, Jules Jammal, passed away at a well-lived but still young age of 39. There is a link to a scholarship set up in his name in the annotations below. This weekend was Disney's D23 presentation so we discuss all the information that came out of that... live-action remakes, sequels, and the incredible line-up on Disney and Pixar animation film slate all the way to 2018! Stephen starts the show by giving a mini-review on the British re-dub of the Argentinian animated film "Metagol" (which in the UK is called "Unbeatables"), Rob tells a story about having poop on his shoe and Pat breaks some news. Then we're off talking about how Furries love Zootopia, why Cars 2 might get too much hate, if Donald Trump was producing the upcoming Dia de los Muertos inspired Pixar movie "Coco" and the problem with trying to make the "definitive" version of a fairy tale. 02 Apr 2014 | Episode 22 - TMNT (2014) Trailer Talk | 01:32:38
This week's podcast is all about the TMNT (2014) first trailer and how much it sucks... and why. We (meaning Stephen mostly, let's be honest) break down every incarnation of the Turtles and how things got to be where we are now, with two great incarnations and a possible disaster on the way. Also, Rob tells a sad story at the end you won't want to miss! This week, the audio was recorded off a LIVE broadcast with viewers and errrrrrrything. Fans made images, illustrations (below) and comments... it was a lot of fun! You can check the recorded video below, if you're into that sorta thing... Behold in the intro, the strangest sounding burp in the world... courtesy of Rob (who else?)! This week we talk about John K working for Miley Cyrus, Alan Becker blowing up the internet, and just about everything else under the sun. This episode could easily be called "tangents" because we are ALL over the place. Pat is a bit sick again (rapidly becoming a theme on the podcast) but toughed it out for your benefit. Stephen was traveling to and from the UK this week, and thus is sick and jet-lagged. We recorded this after midnight so Pat is attempting to be quiet. That leaves Rob to be the energetic & most eloquent of the three. So we talk about the Simpsons/Family Guy crossover, new "Big Hero 6" stills, and by popular demand we talk through the story behind the financial failure of "Legends of Oz: Dorothy's Return." Andy Serkis is an ass. We talk about that & the stuff he said in a recent interview but 1ST... "MIKE TYSON MYSTERIES!" This is a thing, you guys, it's going to be on Adult Swim's 2014 lineup and it sounds amazing. We also talk about the "Akira" live-action fan film trailer & Adam Sandler determined to ruin one of my favorite animated shorts from 2010, "Pixels." Rob and Stephen recorded this a day early so Pat recorded his thoughts on the stories and is dropped in randomly throughout the podcast just to confuse your brain... just listen for the bell, which heralds The Pat and says that he's near!
