In this particularly chaotic and deeply nerdy episode, the hosts embark on a magical journey through Pathfinder: Lost Omens Rival Academies, but not before getting sidetracked by their own brand of ridiculousness. The episode kicks off with an exciting announcement about an upcoming West Marches-style game, loosely inspired by Monster Hunter—because who doesn’t love a good excuse to whack giant beasts with unnecessarily large weapons?
Once they finally manage to refocus, the hosts dive into the Rival Academies supplement, offering an in-depth exploration of the convocation of magical schools, the history of the World Wound (which, surprise surprise, involves wizards making bad choices), and the fascinating cultural dynamics of Golarion’s magical academia. They break down each of the six academies, ponder the mechanics of running adventures in a world of scholarly spellcasters, and try to decide whether demon hunting is a practical career choice or just a competitive college sport with higher-than-usual mortality rates.
As the episode progresses, the conversation somehow takes a hard turn into discussing the Seven Deadly Sins, leading to an amusing debate about which sin best represents each host as a Rune Lord. Things escalate quickly as they delve into personal anecdotes about gluttony—both in terms of food and drink—revealing that some of them may have majored in "College Drinking Games 101." The discussion wraps up in true RPGBOT fashion: a delightful mess of nostalgia, absurdity, and the realization that teleportation magic would make them all incredibly lazy.
The upcoming West Marches campaign promises flexible, player-driven adventuring and likely many, many large weapons.
Lost Omens Rival Academies is essentially a magical World’s Fair, full of weird and wonderful academic rivalries.
The World Wound was created by wizards summoning demons, proving yet again that wizards should probably not be left unsupervised.
The convocation of magic schools is all about rebuilding lost historical knowledge, which is noble—if not also a great excuse for some high-stakes academic drama.
Golarion’s magic schools provide diverse character options, making them a playground for role-playing and mechanical depth.
The hosts love letting discussions flow organically, even if that means they occasionally spiral into completely unrelated nonsense.
Player engagement is key to making a game world feel alive, especially in settings as rich as Pathfinder’s.
The historical lore surrounding the World Wound adds a dramatic backdrop for adventures, reinforcing that bad wizard decisions have long-term consequences.
Each magic school has its own unique theme and mechanical flavor, ensuring something for everyone—whether you want to be a scholarly necromancer or a wizard athlete.
Rune Lords remain one of the most beloved and terrifying elements of Golarion’s lore, because nothing says “respect my authority” like wielding ancient, sin-powered magic.
Demon hunting in Rival Academies is not just a grim necessity—it’s practically a competitive sport. If you’re not slaying demons for clout, are you even trying?
The city at the heart of the convocation serves as an adventuring hub, making it easy to introduce characters and plotlines.
Political intrigue can be seamlessly woven into magical academia, proving that wizard politics are just as cutthroat as regular politics—but with more fireballs.
The thematic elements of the Rune Lords and their ties to the Seven Deadly Sins make for compelling character and villain concepts.
Anathemas in magic should not be taken lightly—unless, of course, you enjoy watching your character suffer terrible consequences for breaking them.
Indulging in sin can lead to some of the best role-playing moments, but portraying pride or lust effectively is harder than it sounds.
The book is packed with lore-rich content, though some DMs might find it lacking in practical tools for structuring campaigns.
New wizard schools introduce fresh gameplay mechanics, making it a great resource for players looking to spice up their spell-slinging.
The podcast’s Question of the Week prompts some self-reflection, ultimately proving that given the choice, teleportation and summoning magic would make everyone incredibly lazy adventurers.
The discussion on gluttony goes beyond overeating, touching on the nature of indulgence in all its forms—especially when it involves alcohol.
Nostalgia plays a huge role in the hosts’ humorous drinking stories, as they recall their reckless college days and questionable beverage choices.
Lust proves to be a particularly challenging sin to explore in role-playing, leading to some entertainingly awkward moments.
Cigars and alcohol somehow make their way into the discussion, proving once again that any RPG conversation can and will derail into personal anecdotes.
The episode ends in beautifully chaotic fashion, as all good RPGBOT episodes should.
Final Thoughts: If you’re a fan of Pathfinder, wizard academies, or just enjoy listening to a group of nerds veer wildly off-topic before pulling everything back together at the last second, this episode is for you. Whether you’re here for deep lore discussions or just the occasional tangent about irresponsible college drinking, RPGBOT delivers yet another entertaining and insightful episode filled with laughter, lore, and just the right amount of nonsense.

Welcome, weary adventurers, to another celestial installment of the RPGBOT.Podcast! In this episode, our hosts take a divine deep dive into the luminous layers of Mount Celestia, the lawful good paradise of the D&D multiverse, where angelic beings reign supreme, the paperwork never stops, and even heaven has a dress code.
Prepare for an unholy amount of lawful good as our hosts grapple with questions like:
Is Mount Celestia just an exclusive afterlife country club? The ultimate "gated community," where only the most virtuous souls get a keycard and an HOA compliance form.
Do Celestials ever take a break? Or are they stuck in an eternal grind to keep their goodness rating at a solid 10/10?
Why does the seventh layer feel like the VIP lounge of the cosmos? No one comes back to tell the tale—are they ascending to ultimate bliss or just getting locked in divine HR meetings forever?
Is Bahamut’s realm the fantasy equivalent of an armored Renaissance Faire? A blend of knightly virtue, dragon-sized bureaucracy, and the world's most rigid chivalry standards.
What’s with the mysterious black domes? Are they heavenly zen gardens or celestial prisons? And why do they sound like the plot of a horror movie?
Heaven, but Make It Complicated
The discussion takes unexpected turns as the hosts compare D&D’s Mount Celestia with Pathfinder’s Heaven, exploring celestial beings, alignment shenanigans, and the sheer logistics of running a flawless divine realm (spoiler: it’s harder than it looks). From beachfront property in the first layer to the moral implications of ascending through good deeds, the conversation proves that even perfection has a few cracks.
But wait, there’s more!
Comedic interludes featuring celestial court jesters, the trials of divine pronunciation (is it Pay-lore or Pah-lore?), and the baffling existence of heavenly bouncers.
A light roasting of the celestial bureaucracy, because even angels probably have to fill out divine TPS reports.
A deep-dive into morality, questioning whether lawful good is just neutral good with extra paperwork.
Final Verdict?
Celestia might be a beacon of goodness, but our hosts aren’t convinced it’s the paradise it claims to be. Between the divine bureaucracy, alignment gatekeeping, and oddly exclusive policies, they make a compelling case for why sometimes, chaotic neutral might be the way to go.
Tune in to this hilariously insightful episode where philosophy meets comedy, and the afterlife gets a much-needed reality check!

PF2e WAR OF IMMORTALS - It’s just really a cool system!
01:09:21
Ready to take your Pathfinder 2 campaign from epic to IMMORTAL? Join us on the RPGBOT.Podcast as we dive into War of the Immortals and break down mythic feats, legendary archetypes, and the all-new Mythic Rules—tech issues and hilarious mishaps included!
From high-risk Bloodragers to Warrior of Legend madness, we’re giving you insights, laughs, and some seriously powerful gameplay ideas. Don’t miss this epic journey through Pathfinder’s biggest expansion yet!
Summary
In this unmissable episode, our fearless hosts dive into Pathfinder 2’s epic War of the Immortals expansion with the energy of an over-caffeinated Bloodrager and just as many technical hiccups. From unexpected mic drops to internet glitches, the journey to becoming a mythical hero has never been so... relatable.
Our brave podcasters dissect Pathfinder’s most intense archetypes, each bringing its own flavor of chaos to the table. First, they take on the Bloodrager, whose berserk rage will make you wonder if they’re recording from a live battlefield. Then there’s the Avenger, for when you’re morally obligated to protect the party but really just want to smash things. The Cineshal and Vindicator make their debut too, adding layers of strategic flair (and some eyebrow-raising plot twists) to any party composition. Finally, the Warrior of Legend emerges, and they aren’t kidding about “high-risk, high-reward”—this class takes bold gameplay to mythic extremes, ensuring that death is just another Tuesday.
Next, our heroes turn their attention to Mythic Rules, a toolkit designed to push the boundaries of both gameplay and sanity. They break down Mythic Points, which fuel incredible powers and a few not-so-incredible debates about balance. The hosts dive into the shifting mechanics between old and new systems, discussing how these rules allow players to bend reality, rewrite history, and save—or totally wreck—the world.
In the grand finale, they tackle mythic feats, destinies, and monsters, each with its own lore-heavy implications and godlike powers. It’s a goldmine for fans looking to add dramatic stakes and mind-blowing moments to their sessions, but not without a side of absolute hilarity. With variant rules and endless options, the episode is packed with all the details, laughs, and chaotic banter you need to take your campaign from epic to “immortal.”

D&D UNEARTHED ARCANA REVIEW Part 2 - ARTIFICER: I would like a small army, please?
01:13:47
The Alchemist subclass has leveled up its potion game, proving you can now brew life-saving elixirs faster than most of us can make a cup of coffee. Meanwhile, the Armorer subclass is out here making Dreadnought armor that essentially says, "I’m big, I’m bad, and I take up two squares now." The Artillerist got an upgrade, so you can still blow stuff up while debating whether guns belong in your magical fantasy world. Spoiler: Someone’s Homunculus Roomba is going to have to clean up the mess.
Tune in for the laughs, stay for the puns, and remember: one day, Vicious Mockery might become a bonus action, and then no adventurer’s ego will be safe.
In this hilarious deep-dive into Dungeons & Dragons' Unearthed Arcana, the hosts embark on a chaotic yet insightful exploration of all things Artificer. The episode begins with a lively discussion of the revamped Alchemist subclass, where the once-mediocre healer is now brewing elixirs that can practically bring characters back from the brink of death—or at least keep them upright long enough to face their next poor life choice. Potions are now crafted faster than ever, which might explain why Alchemists seem perpetually caffeinated.
Shifting gears, the hosts don their metaphorical armor (and probably some literal helmets) to dissect the updated Armorer subclass. With options like Dreadnought armor, which makes you bigger and scarier in combat, and Perfected Armor, which adds a splash of damage and utility, there’s something for everyone—unless you liked the old customization options, in which case, condolences. The new armor replication system is simpler, but as one host laments, "simplicity is the enemy of shiny customization."
Things take a turn for the absurd as the conversation veers into gameplay mechanics. Pulling and pushing creatures might sound straightforward, but apparently, it's a one-way ticket to rules-lawyering chaos. Grappling, once a staple of wrestling matches gone awry, now feels about as effective as trying to hug a gelatinous cube. And then there’s the unforgettable mention of "character brain extraction," which the hosts agree is equal parts horrifying and comedy gold, depending on which side of the dice you're on.
Next, the spotlight shines on the Artillerist subclass, which has undergone upgrades that make it deadlier—and debatably more explosive—than ever. This sparks a lively debate about the coexistence of magic and technology in fantasy worlds, with one host arguing for the poetic elegance of wands and the other championing the raw, chaotic energy of boomsticks. Meanwhile, Battlesmith fans will be pleased to know the Steel Defender is now more useful, although one host quips, "It still won't do your taxes."
The humor continues with a look at the Homunculus spell, a new addition to the Artificer arsenal that lets players conjure a small, slightly unsettling creature to assist in adventures. One host imagines it as "a glorified Roomba with attitude," while the other is already brainstorming scenarios where the Homunculus saves the day—or ruins it spectacularly.
The episode rounds off with a mailbag segment tackling the question: which cantrips should become bonus actions? This sparks a flurry of debate, with one host suggesting Firebolt could add some sizzle to multi-action rounds and the other lamenting that bonus-action Vicious Mockery would lead to endless pun wars at the table.
Throughout the episode, the hosts share their hopes, dreams, and mixed feelings about the future of D&D. They long for innovative subclasses, yearn for a return to the rich settings of Eberron, and urge designers to embrace the weird, wonderful flavor that makes the game magical. All this is delivered with a heaping dose of humor, proving once again that no matter how complex the rules or contentious the changes, the real joy of D&D is in laughing through it all with friends.

2025 UNEARTHED ARCANA - The Cartographer's Guide to Getting Lost
01:24:15
Ever wanted to play an Artificer so obsessed with maps that they can literally teleport via doodles, yet still somehow get lost? Buckle up, because the Cartographer subclass is here to turn your D&D campaign into a magical GPS adventure—complete with rerouting, questionable shortcuts, and the occasional teleportation mishap straight into a dragon's lair!
Episode Summary
In this thrilling episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts embark on a magical journey through the latest Unearthed Arcana updates for the Artificer class, complete with a hearty dose of laughter and debate. They begin by dissecting the major changes to the Artificer’s core mechanics and subclass features, including an in-depth look at the newest addition to the Artificer family: the Cartographer subclass—because what every adventuring party really needs is a sentient GPS that may or may not lead them into a pit of doom.
The discussion unfolds with an analysis of the Adventures Atlas, a magical mapping system that aims to redefine exploration mechanics but also raises questions about just how useful a glowing, teleporting map can be in the middle of combat. Can you really fight a dragon while scribbling out escape routes? The hosts weigh in.
From there, the conversation pivots to a much larger topic—the role of exploration in 5e. The hosts argue whether modern D&D has devalued travel and survival mechanics and whether subclasses like the Cartographer can bring back the golden age of navigating with actual consequences (hint: probably not, but it's fun to dream).
Not stopping at Artificer updates, the episode veers into Dragon Marks, magic items, and character customization, with the hosts debating whether Dragon Marks should get a modern refresh or stay as the Eberron-exclusive party trick they’ve always been. They also dig into the Mark of Healing, Potent Dragon Mark, and the Boon of Sibiris, contemplating the power levels of these abilities and whether they introduce game-breaking (or at least table-flipping) potential.
Lastly, the hosts share game-mastering wisdom and some truly absurd personal anecdotes, proving once again that no amount of Unearthed Arcana can prevent players from doing completely unexpected things.
Key Takeaways
Artificer updates: The Artificer class gets some noteworthy enhancements, including a revamped subclass and fresh spells that improve its versatility.
Cartographer subclass: Magical maps and teleportation mechanics open new possibilities, but the subclass may still struggle to compete with stronger Artificer options.
Exploration in 5e: The discussion highlights how D&D 5e has gradually moved away from meaningful travel mechanics, raising the question of whether exploration can make a comeback.
Teleportation tactics: The Cartographer’s teleportation abilities could be a game-changer in combat, offering strategic mobility for quick positioning and battlefield control.
Dragon Marks reimagined: The debate over whether Dragon Marks should receive updates to fit modern D&D leads to a broader discussion about character diversity and flexibility.
Magic items and balance: The hosts critique how newer magic items often overshadow classic ones, potentially making certain features obsolete.
Healing and spellcasting feats: Mark of Healing and Greater Mark of Healing provide significant cleric-like abilities to other classes, while the Boon of Sibiris introduces high-level spellcasting power without using spell slots.
RPG learning curve: The hosts share practical advice for navigating new RPG systems, from focusing on key sections of rulebooks to embracing the inevitable chaos of a first session.
Game Master struggles: Balancing player agency, new rules, and campaign consistency is an ongoing challenge—but one that leads to some of the most hilarious moments at the table.
If you’ve ever wondered whether a magical map can solve all your problems (spoiler: it can’t) or if the Artificer is finally getting the love it deserves, this episode is for you. Grab your compass (or just ask your party’s wizard for a Teleport spell), and dive into the latest Unearthed Arcana discussion!

COUNTERSPELL - I'm going to counterspell a Spellcaster's counterspell
01:13:47
Join us as we dive into the mechanics and challenges of Counterspell across different editions of D&D and Pathfinder! We break down what works, what doesn’t, and how it impacts gameplay. Whether you’re a fan of the 2014 D&D rules or prefer Pathfinder’s approach or looking forward to the 2024 D&D rules, this episode has something for every tabletop RPG enthusiast!
Summary
In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we dive into the mechanics and challenges of the Counterspell ability across various editions of Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder. We discuss the complexities and limitations of Counterspell in the 2024 Edition D&D and Pathfinder 1e, such as the need to ready an action and the high DC for spellcraft checks. The conversation shifts to Pathfinder 2, where Counterspell is streamlined into a reaction-based feat with a DC tied to the caster's save DC, reflecting notable improvements.
We compare Counterspell mechanics in Pathfinder 2nd Edition and D&D 5th Edition, examining the strengths and weaknesses of each system. Topics include spell preparation, action economy, and the overall impact of Counterspell on gameplay and player agency. We offer differing perspectives, with one favoring D&D 5th Edition’s 2014 rules and another finding Pathfinder 2nd Edition’s approach more appealing. This episode provides an in-depth look at Counterspell across RPG systems, touching on its impact on the player experience and exploring possible improvements.
Takeaways
Counterspell in 3rd edition and Pathfinder 1 has limitations and complexities, including the need to ready an action and the high DC for the spellcraft check.
Counterspell in Pathfinder 2 is a feat that can be used as a reaction, and the DC is based on the caster's save DC.
The hosts express frustration with the mechanics of Counterspell and suggest potential improvements.
Identifying the spell being cast is an important factor in successfully countering a spell.
The limitations of Counterspell make it a niche ability that is rarely used in gameplay. Counterspells in Pathfinder 2nd Edition require spellcasters to have the exact spell prepared or use the Clever Counterspell feat at level 12.
In D&D 5th Edition, counterspells can be cast as a reaction and require an ability check or a successful saving throw against the caster's spell save DC.
The effectiveness of counterspells in both systems depends on factors such as spell level, spellcasting ability, and the target's saving throw proficiency.
The changes in Pathfinder 2nd Edition give the target of a counterspell more agency and allow for more strategic decision-making.
The 2014 rules of D&D 5th Edition provide a simpler and more accessible approach to counterspells, but some players may find them less satisfying or balanced. Counterspell can be a divisive mechanic in tabletop RPGs, with some players finding it frustrating and others enjoying its strategic elements.
The hosts discuss the mechanics of counterspell in Pathfinder and D&D, including the use of spell slots, ability checks, and critical success/failure.
They explore potential improvements to counterspell, such as removing the requirement to have the same spell prepared or adding additional action costs.
The conversation also touches on other dice systems, including the D10 pool system and the D100 system, and the hosts share their preferences.

Saddle up, folks! The RPGBOT.Podcast is riding into the Wild West of Eberron with the "Frontiers of Eberron: Quickstone" supplement by Keith Baker and his team! In this week's episode, we're talking dueling wizards, living magic items, and more subclasses than you can shake a six-shooter at! We’ve got arcane focus specialization feats that’ll have you channeling spells like a gunslinger, and we’re drooling over some symbionts—magic items that are alive (and a little creepy). Plus, train heists, collapsed mines, and a final boss showdown in a demi-plane. It’s like D&D meets High Noon! Whether you're into westerns, Eberron, or just want to bring a little yeehaw to your next adventure, this episode is for you! Listen now, partner, or you’ll be rolling initiative before you know it!
Summary
In this rootin' tootin' episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts saddle up and mosey into the newest D&D supplement, "Frontiers of Eberron: Quickstone" by Keith Baker and his posse. This ain't your average spell-slinging adventure—it's a full-blown magical showdown in a Wild West-style town! The hosts excitedly tip their hats to the supplement's shiny new dueling mechanics, subclasses, and species. Turns out, nothing says "Welcome to Eberron" like a shootout between a gunslinger and a wizard wielding a living, symbiotic magic item.
They geek out over the coolest feats, like the arcane focus specialization (because who wouldn't want to channel a spell while doing their best Clint Eastwood impression?) and gush over the weird-but-awesome "symbionts"—magic items that are, quite literally, alive. Oh, and let’s not forget the eye-popping art and monsters that could make even the bravest outlaw want to roll for initiative.
They round off the discussion with a quick gallop through the adventure module, which features everything you'd expect from a fantasy western: train heists, mine collapses, and a final showdown in a demi-plane. The hosts give it two enthusiastic thumbs up and a tumbleweed for good measure, recommending it for anyone who loves the Eberron setting or just wants to throw some magic into their next High Noon duel.
The hosts dive into the dueling mechanics in the Quickstone supplement, sprinkling in plenty of humor along the way.
Frontiers of Eberron: Quickstone brings a Wild West vibe to the Eberron setting, complete with a frontier town atmosphere.
New dueling mechanics offer high-risk, high-reward gameplay, creating cinematic and tense showdowns.
The supplement adds depth to character creation with new subclasses, backgrounds, and species tailored for the Eberron setting.
New feats and magic items provide unique, creative options for players to explore.
The book’s art is visually stunning and enhances the overall experience.
Creative monster designs add fresh challenges for players to face.
The included adventure is a perfect introduction to the setting, blending classic D&D elements with a Wild West twist.
Quickstone is a well-crafted adventure module for the Eberron campaign, featuring dramatic events like a train attack, mine collapse, and a boss battle in a demi-plane.
The hosts highly recommend Quickstone for fans of both westerns and the Eberron setting.

They introduce the concept of decision trees, a practical tool to help players identify RPGs that align with their preferences. Key highlights include:
The Cypher System and Genesis: An exploration of these versatile systems, focusing on their mechanics and adaptability to different genres.

The conversation also ventures into niche areas, such as the unique storytelling potential of solo RPGs, and highlights specific systems like Numenera, with its futuristic exploration themes, and One Ring 2E, celebrated for its low-power fantasy and rich Tolkien-inspired lore. The hosts emphasize the importance of understanding a game's mechanics and setting realistic expectations to maximize the enjoyment of any RPG experience.

In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we discuss haunt, haunting, and haunted things. We talk how to make haunts interesting both as a story device and as a mechanic in any RPG in order to add some self-contained horror to your game.

In this action-packed and delightfully chaotic episode, the RPGBOT hosts kick things off with a thrilling unboxing moment from Hero Forge, revealing a spectacularly 3D-printed D20 die. Naturally, this leads to a deep dive into the wonders of forced movement in tabletop RPGs. Whether it's pushing, pulling, or just shoving characters into awkward situations, the hosts dissect every angle of this often-overlooked mechanic with their signature blend of humor and expertise.
The discussion takes some wild detours, including tragicomic battles with printers, a debate on the best and worst jobs (spoiler: San Diego weathermen have it easy), and a flurry of pop culture references and questionable impressions. But fear not, the conversation steers back on track with an in-depth analysis of how forced movement mechanics have evolved in Dungeons & Dragons, Pathfinder 2, and Tales of the Valiant. From grappling tactics to spell-versus-martial balance, the crew explores the intricate dance of battlefield control and the ever-present struggle between player creativity and game mechanics.
Ultimately, the hosts leave no stone unturned, questioning the effectiveness of push mechanics, analyzing historical shifts from 2014 to 2024, and debating the fine art of battlefield manipulation. Along the way, they uncover the power of tactical play, uncover absurd yet effective spell interactions, and ensure that no D&D rulebook remains unscathed in their quest for ultimate RPG enlightenment.
Key Takeaways
Disney Whispers: Technically not forced movement, but we won’t tell if you don’t.
What Counts as Forced Movement? If something is physically moving you against your will, it's probably forced.
Bull Rush: The football tackle of RPG mechanics.
Dungeon Crasher: The best way to turn your Fighter into a wrecking ball.
The Meta of Pushing: If pushing mechanics don’t become meta, what are we even doing here?
Push 'Em Away! Keep enemies out of melee range with strategic shoving.
Every Class Has a Move: If you look closely, every class has at least one forced movement option.
Battlefield Control = Power: If you can control positioning, you control the fight.
2014 vs. 2024 Meta: Not much has changed, but we’re still talking about it.
AOE Spells Still Reign Supreme: Sometimes, the best way to move enemies is to make them disappear.
Martials vs. Casters: Who controls the battlefield better? Let the debates rage on.
Tales of the Valiant's Shove Mechanics: Adds some risk-reward spice to the push game.
Pull Weapons in Tales of the Valiant: Because yanking enemies into danger is just as fun as pushing them away.
Pathfinder 2 Loves Forced Movement: More mechanics, more options, more fun.
Grappling in Pathfinder 2: It’s a full-time job, requiring constant upkeep.
Pathfinder 2’s Organization Woes: Finding the right rule shouldn’t be harder than fighting a dragon.
Hero Points to the Rescue: Because failing a flat check is the worst.
Bonus Fun Mechanics
Hydraulic Push: It’s a spell, it’s water-powered, and it’s a force movement MVP.

D&D CLASS SELECTION: It's like speed dating, but with swords and spell slots...
01:28:43
Not sure which D&D class to start with? We break down the best and worst picks for new DnD players—featuring confused Wizards, exploding Artificers, and the ever-reliable Barbarian.
Summary
In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, the hosts explore which Dungeons & Dragons classes are best suited for new players. With humor, experience, and a healthy dose of debate, they walk through the ins and outs of each class—from the accessible Fighter to the complicated Wizard—highlighting which choices provide a smooth introduction to tabletop RPGs and which might send new players reaching for the Player’s Handbook (and aspirin).
The discussion ranges from the brute-force appeal of the Barbarian to the arcane intricacies of spellcasters like the Sorcerer and Warlock. Along the way, the hosts consider how party composition, game length, and mechanical complexity should influence character selection, and they sprinkle in some banter about drink preferences to keep things lively. Whether you're a first-time adventurer or helping someone roll their first character, this episode provides a thoughtful—and often funny—guide to starting strong.
Class complexity varies dramatically and should be a key consideration for beginners.
New players benefit greatly from having experienced players at the table.
It’s okay to change classes as players get more comfortable with the game.
Simpler classes help players stay engaged without feeling overwhelmed.
Class-by-Class Breakdown:
Artificer
Highly versatile, but too complex for most beginners.
Heavy reliance on magic items and systems mastery.
Barbarian
Excellent starting class due to simplicity and durability.
High hit points make them forgiving for mistakes.
Bard
Complex with many strategic spell choices.
Spell traps can confuse new players.
Cleric
Highly versatile with a strong role in the party.
Forgiving due to the ability to change prepared spells easily.
Druid
Mechanically rich but overwhelming for new players.
Requires understanding Wild Shape and extensive spellcasting.
Fighter
The most beginner-friendly class.
Few pitfalls and highly customizable.
Monk
Fun but mechanically challenging.
Not recommended for brand new players.
Paladin
Durable and straightforward in combat.
Introduces both martial and spellcasting elements in a manageable way.
Ranger
Offers utility and moderate complexity.
Flexible due to spell-switching mechanics.
Rogue
Stealthy and skillful with few mechanical traps.
A solid choice for new players who want to be clever.
Sorcerer
Straightforward focus on damage, but can suffer from decision overload.
Can be beginner-friendly if spells are chosen carefully.
Warlock
Simple core mechanics, but pact and spell choices can create analysis paralysis.
Very dependent on the build and playstyle.
Wizard
One of the most complex classes due to extensive spell lists.
Power spike at level 5 (Fireball) can feel rewarding.
Requires patience and careful spell management.
Bonus Insight:
The 2024 D&D rules are referred to as “aggressively fine,” hinting at minor changes that still preserve class identity and structure.
The type of campaign and its length can heavily impact how enjoyable a class feels to play.
A player's drink preference might not help you pick a class—but it will make the table more fun.

2025 UNEARTHED ARCANA - FORGOTTEN REALMS SUBCLASSES - Artisan's Tools are cool now guys!
01:06:53
If Clerics can outsmart Wizards, Fighters get pet dragons, and Bladesingers are still ridiculously overpowered—has D&D officially lost its mind?
The new episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast is live! This week, we ask the hard-hitting questions—should Clerics be smarter than Wizards? Do Fighters deserve pet dragons? And has the Bladesinger finally reached levels of power where even the gods are filing complaints? Join us for heated debates, unnecessary tangents, and the kind of overanalysis that would make a rules lawyer weep. Listen now before Wizards of the Coast patches reality.
In this whirlwind episode, the hosts embark on a rollercoaster of topics ranging from the perils of rogue socks in the laundry to the existential nightmare of troubleshooting wired internet connections. Between these real-life boss battles, they somehow manage to talk about Dungeons & Dragons.
The latest Unearthed Arcana release is scrutinized with the fervor of scholars deciphering ancient texts—except these texts involve subclasses with confusing names and power levels that may or may not break the game. The hosts dissect the freshly buffed Knowledge Domain Cleric, marveling at its new spell lists and the power of Mind Magic, which essentially lets Clerics moonlight as Wizards without all that pesky spell-slot management. They also ponder whether setting floors on ability checks is a stroke of genius or an affront to the sacred chaos of rolling dice.
Next, they turn their attention to the Purple Dragon Knight, a class previously dismissed as the fantasy equivalent of soggy toast. With new features resembling the Drake Warden and the introduction of an Amethyst Dragon Companion (because dragons make everything cooler), this once-ignored subclass suddenly has tactical depth. The hosts debate whether it’s finally worth playing or if it remains the equivalent of a participation trophy for Fighters.
Finally, the Bladesinger Wizard takes center stage, dazzling with its high-powered, glass-cannon energy. The hosts discuss its absurd combat effectiveness, its revamped Song of Defense mechanic, and its continued ability to make DMs question their life choices. They also consider whether Steel Wind Strike is a spell or just an excuse for Wizards to roleplay as anime protagonists.
All of this is wrapped up with heated opinions, terrible jokes, and an unwavering commitment to finding the perfect balance between power and design—except when it comes to Bladesingers, because apparently, they’re just unstoppable.
Key Takeaways
The Bladesinger Wizard is so strong it probably multiclasses into itself.
Laundry disasters are real, and they don’t discriminate.
Unearthed Arcana is like a D&D loot box—exciting, unpredictable, and possibly game-breaking.
Technical difficulties are the true final boss of podcasting.
Knowledge Clerics can now out-Wizard Wizards in intelligence checks, which feels… illegal.
Setting a floor for ability checks is either genius or blasphemy, depending on how much you enjoy suffering.
The Purple Dragon Knight is no longer D&D’s equivalent of a sad birthday party.
Adding a dragon companion instantly makes any class 300% cooler.
Song of Defense makes Bladesingers even more unkillable, which will surely delight players and frustrate DMs.
The hosts are equal parts analysts and comedians, which is why this episode feels like a chaotic, but delightful, deep dive into D&D mechanics.
If you love high-level theorycrafting, chaotic energy, and the occasional rant about internet cables, this episode is a must-listen.

2024 MONSTER MANUAL REVIEW - We Finally Got a Copy!!!
01:22:39
Monsters got beefier, rules got weirder, and DMs everywhere are questioning their life choices—welcome to the 2024 Monster Manual meltdown!
The RPGBOT.Podcast crew dives headfirst into the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual, and things get wild. Hot takes? Absolutely. Existential dread about humanoid reclassification? You bet.
From debating whether False Appearance was too powerful (or if DMs were just lazy) to mourning the loss of non-magical damage resistance, this episode is packed with spicy opinions, monster mayhem, and just a tiny bit of rulebook-related outrage. The team also gushes over the ArchHag, questions the mysterious absence of high-level NPCs, and asks the important question: Does inflating HP while lowering AC make combat better or just longer?
Whether you’re here for monster breakdowns, homebrew chaos, or just to hear people passionately argue about stat blocks, this episode has something for everyone. Tune in now and embrace the madness!
Summary: In this delightfully chaotic episode, the hosts battle technical gremlins, reflect on life’s existential woes, and somehow end up deep in the weeds of the 2024 Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual. They break down the latest changes, from monster stat overhauls to baffling reclassifications (farewell, humanoids?), while throwing in plenty of humor and spicy opinions along the way.
The discussion takes an intense turn as they dive into gameplay mechanics, lamenting the loss of beloved traits (RIP False Appearance) and questioning why poison and paralysis are suddenly less terrifying. They also express mixed feelings about the mysterious disappearance of damage resistances, argue whether inflated HP is a blessing or a curse, and call out the promised but mysteriously absent rulebook features.
Of course, no Monster Manual discussion is complete without fawning over new monstrosities. The hosts gush over breathtaking artwork, break down standout creatures like the ArchHag and the Blob of Annihilation, and voice their strong opinions about the new and improved Mind Flayer. Wrapping up with thoughts on game balance, community feedback, and whether anyone actually follows official rules, this episode is a must-listen for DMs, players, and anyone who enjoys deep-diving into monster mechanics, stat block debates, and rulebook drama.
Key Takeaways
Monster Manual Madness
The 2024 Monster Manual brings major changes, some exciting and some controversial.
Monster design trends are shifting—goodbye non-magical resistances, hello glass cannons.
Hags now have personal anathemas, which is both horrifying and amazing.
The Blob of Annihilation is exactly as terrifying as it sounds.
Mind Flayers got a glow-up, and players are here for it.
The ArchHag is a fantastic new addition, possibly leading the Hag Cinematic Universe.
Gameplay & Mechanics: The Great Debate
False Appearance’s removal: Was it too overpowered, or are DMs just lazy?
Humanoids reclassified—because nothing says “fun” like redoing encounter tables.
Poison and paralysis mechanics were nerfed, making things less deadly.
Resistance to non-magical damage is gone. Bring tissues for your Barbarian.
HP inflation versus AC reduction—a battle for the ages.
Monsters now hit harder, last longer, and have questionable life choices.
Community, Balance, and The Future of D&D
Players expected big changes, but not these big changes.
Where are the high-level humanoid NPCs? We miss them.
Weapon masteries feel imbalanced, and future errata seem likely.
Community feedback is key, but does WOTC actually listen?
Homebrewing is both a blessing and a curse, especially with changing rulesets.
Clear communication is essential for any game transition, looking at you, rulebook writers.

Summary
In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, we review the 2024 Players Handbook for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). The team talks about the improved art in the book and the reordering of chapters to prioritize learning how to play the game before character creation. We discuss the inclusion of suggested traits based on alignment and attributes in character creation. We discuss the changes to the barbarian class, noting that some subclasses have become more usable.
In this part of the episode, we go over the changes to various classes in the 2024 rules of Dungeons and Dragons. We cover the changes to the Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorcerer, Warlock, and Wizard classes. We highlight the improvements and nerfs to each class, as well as the impact on subclasses and specific features. We have mixed feelings about some classes, while others are seen as winners or losers in the update. In this final part of the episode, we discuss the chapters on Origins, Feats, Equipment, Spells, and the Appendices in the 2024 D&D Player's Handbook. We also let you know our opinions on the changes and improvements made in the new edition. Finally, we answer a listener question about optimizing marshal characters in the 2024 rules.
The 2024 rules for D&D have been released, and the hosts provide an overview of the changes in the new Player's Handbook.
The art in the book has improved, with a mix of action-adventure and everyday life depictions.
Character creation now includes suggested traits based on alignment and attributes, providing a starting point for role-playing.
The artificer class is not included in the new handbook, disappointing some players.
The barbarian class has seen improvements, with some subclasses becoming more usable. The 2024 rules of Dungeons and Dragons bring changes to various classes, with some classes seeing improvements and others experiencing nerfs.
The Bard class remains mostly the same, with some quality of life improvements and a big upgrade at high levels.
The Cleric class receives small quality of life improvements, detachment of armor from subclasses, and improved features like Divine Intervention.
The Druid class gets offensive improvements for Moon Druids and quality of life improvements for Land Druids.
The Fighter class benefits from weapon mastery, allowing for new and powerful combat options.
The Monk class is considered the biggest winner of the 2024 rules, with improved features and more options for customization.
The Paladin class sees changes to Divine Smite, making it a spell and limiting its usage per turn, but gains increased tankiness.
The Ranger class receives mixed reviews, with an overemphasis on Hunter's Mark and potential challenges for Beastmaster Rangers.
The Rogue class is seen as better due to the ability to do more than just sneak attack on their turn.
The Sorcerer class experiences mixed changes, with improvements to some features but nerfs to powerful metamagic options like Twin Spell.
The Warlock class is a mixed bag, with some improvements and downgrades to certain features and subclasses.
The Wizard class remains largely the same, with minor tweaks to features and the ability to prepare more spells and change them on a short rest. The 2024 D&D Player's Handbook introduces changes and improvements to character creation and gameplay.
The chapters on Origins, Feats, Equipment, Spells, and the Appendices provide detailed information and rules for players.
The hosts discuss the impact of changes to feats like Great Weapon Master and Sharpshooter.
Marshal characters can now focus more on battlefield control and support, rather than pure damage.

In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, We break down the Plane of Mechanus in the D&D cosmology. We describe Mechanus as a plane of absolute order, with interlocking gears the size of small countries. We talk about the Modrons, creatures that inhabit Mechanus and are known for their bureaucratic and orderly nature. Two optional rules for Mechanus: the Law of Averages, where creatures always use the average damage result for attacks and spells, and Imposing Order, where visitors must make a Wisdom saving throw at the end of a long rest to avoid changing their alignment to lawful neutral.
We also delve into the hierarchy of Modrons, the native inhabitants of Mechanus, and their roles and functions within the plane. We share tidbits about Modrons, such as their limited communication abilities and the constant replacement of Modrons in the hierarchy upon death. We touch on the challenges of finding stat blocks for higher-ranking Modrons. We discuss various aspects of Mechanus, the plane of law and order in the Dungeons & Dragons multiverse. We cover topics such as the ruling modron hierarchy of Mechanus, Asmodeus's Ruby Rod, the Formians, the Gate Town of Automata, and the Great Modron March. The new rules for infusions and the Replicate Magic Item feature let you conjure common magic items at level 2, while rare ones have to wait until level 14. Battlesmith fans might be mourning a few losses, but the class’s overall versatility is better than ever.
In this episode, we talk about what works, what feels awkward, and why features like Right Tool for the Job might need a little extra fine-tuning. We also dig into why the Artificer has solidified its place as the Swiss Army Knife of adventuring, ready to save the day with creativity and clever mechanics.

Along the way, they examine how the Artificer’s changes align with broader trends in D&D design, share thoughts on the class’s evolution, and speculate on future possibilities (spoiler: more subclasses, please).
If you’ve ever wondered how to balance a bag of holding full of spell-storing items or why concentration mechanics are your worst enemy, this episode is for you. Tune in, and discover how the Artificer’s shiny new toolkit might just redefine your next adventure!
In this episode, the hosts delve into the latest Unearthed Arcana updates for the Artificer class in Dungeons & Dragons 2024. They explore the significant changes introduced in the playtest, focusing on how these updates impact gameplay and the class’s overall role in the game. Key features like the new Drain Magic Item ability stand out, allowing Artificers to convert magic items into spell slots, adding a strategic layer to their utility.
Other updates include adjustments to Replicate Magic Item, which now allows Artificers to create any common magic item starting at level 2, while delaying access to rare items until level 14 for better balance. The ability to change cantrips on a long rest has been extended to Artificers, increasing their adaptability in various scenarios. Meanwhile, the changes to spellcasting focus require infused items, creating new considerations for character planning.
The hosts also discuss the potential downsides of the revisions, such as the removal of certain options for Battlesmiths and the diminished utility of Right Tool for the Job. They emphasize how these updates reflect a broader effort to refine and modernize the class while noting the mixed player reception.
The conversation highlights the importance of clear mechanics, balanced features, and rewarding gameplay experiences, especially as players evaluate the Artificer’s evolving toolkit. While the updates show promise, the hosts agree that more refinement is needed to ensure the class remains engaging and versatile, particularly through the introduction of new subclasses and impactful capstone abilities.

MASTERING ACTION ECONOMY - Randomly generate an NPC your players will hate...
00:58:14
Are your players constantly asking, “Can I do that on my turn?” Are you tired of DMs crying over bonus actions and stunned conditions? Do you wake up at night wondering if Pathfinder 2 just does it better?
In this episode, we dive deep into the tactical jungle that is action economy in TTRPGs. From the stripped-down speed of 5E to the glorious chaos of Pathfinder 2’s three-action system, we break down what works, what doesn’t, and what might just break your game (in the best way).
We cover:
Why random encounters might be the most underrated tool in your GM toolbox.
The real reason 5E’s action economy feels like fighting with one hand tied behind your back.
How Pathfinder 2 turned “You get 3 actions” into a strategy masterclass.
What the Stormlight Archive RPG is doing that’s weird... but kinda brilliant.
Why status effects like stunned, slowed, and “oh no, not again” are actually game-defining.
The math behind multiple attacks—and why it’s both a blessing and a curse.
How to level up your online roleplay with better gear, stronger communication, and less awkward silences.
This isn’t just crunch—it’s a full-blown mechanics buffet, with hot takes, cooler heads, and a few unfiltered truths about what makes combat fun (or unbearable).
If you’ve ever cared about how your character moves, strikes, or just desperately tries not to die in initiative order, this episode’s for you.
Tactical Takeaways from the RPGBOT.Podcast
Random encounters create chaos—and legends.
The action economy makes or breaks your game’s strategy.
5E’s simplicity can be limiting. Pathfinder 2 says: “Hold my initiative tracker.”
Free actions are powerful. Use them like seasoning—sparingly but effectively.
Multi-attack penalties exist for balance—but they still sting.
Status conditions aren’t just flavor text. They’re battlefield game-changers.
Pathfinder 2 isn’t just complex—it’s elegant, once you speak its crunchy language.
Stormlight Archive RPG is a sleeper hit in action design.
Want better online games? Start with better audio and stronger player connections.

Get ready, adventurers—this week on the RPGbot.podcast, we're cracking open the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide (aka “D&D 5.5: Now with Extra Crunch!”) and going deep! From traps to revamped monster mechanics, and maybe a bit too much love for Lesser Restoration, we’re tackling it all. Is Greyhawk back? Are magic item prices going up? Will combat ever stop feeling like wizarding math homework? Join us for a wild ride through dungeons, dragons, and dungeon dragons. Listen in, laugh along, and maybe—just maybe—take that leap into a whole new RPG system!
Summary
In this raucous rollercoaster of an episode, the RPGbot crew dives headfirst into the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide, or as they affectionately dub it, "D&D 5.5: Now with Extra Crunch!" With laughter and some mildly controlled frustration, they tackle everything from trap hazards to reworked monster mechanics, sprinkling in a fair share of "why, Wizards, why?" moments. From marveling at the rebalanced Tomb of Horrors (a little less horror, a lot more trap insurance) to dissecting the Greyhawk revival as a "setting comeback nobody asked for," the hosts leave no stone unturned.
There’s something for everyone in this episode—whether you’re curious about new magic item pricing (hint: dragons might actually start haggling) or just hoping to understand why balancing a combat encounter suddenly feels like filing taxes. Plus, with epic riffs on spells like Lesser Restoration and a side quest into safety tools, they manage to skewer and celebrate D&D’s evolution all at once.
Will they convince you to stick with the game, or inspire a brave leap into the weird and wonderful world of other RPGs? Tune in for laughs, hot takes, and a dungeon’s worth of insights!

On this remastered Upcasting Spells episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast), the hosts delve into the mechanics and strategic applications of casting spells at higher levels in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition (DnD 5e) and Pathfinder 2nd Edition (PF2e). Understanding upcasting is essential for spellcasters aiming to maximize their effectiveness in various scenarios.
Episode Highlights:
Definition and Importance of Upcasting: The hosts explain that upcasting involves casting a spell using a higher-level spell slot than its base level, enhancing its effects. This mechanic allows spellcasters to adapt their magic to meet the demands of different combat and role-playing situations.
Upcasting in DnD 5e:
Damage Spells: Many damage-dealing spells, such as Inflict Wounds, gain additional damage dice when upcast, making them more potent against formidable foes.
Healing Spells: Spells like Cure Wounds restore more hit points when cast with higher-level slots, providing crucial support during challenging encounters.
Utility Spells: Certain spells, including Hold Person, can target more creatures when upcast, offering greater control over the battlefield.
Upcasting in PF2e:
Flexible Spellcasting: Unlike DnD 5e, PF2e allows spontaneous casters to cast spells at higher levels without prior preparation, offering adaptability in various situations.
Signature Spells: Spontaneous casters can designate specific spells as signature spells, enabling them to cast these spells at any available spell level without needing to learn multiple versions.
Scaling Effects: Many spells in PF2e, such as Heal, scale effectively with higher-level casting, maintaining their relevance throughout a character's progression.
Strategic Considerations:
Resource Management: The hosts discuss the importance of balancing the use of higher-level spell slots for upcasting against reserving them for high-level spells, emphasizing strategic resource allocation.
Spell Selection: Choosing spells that scale well with upcasting can enhance a spellcaster's versatility and effectiveness in diverse scenarios.
