*Recorded earlier this year - stay home and safe, everyone*
Forever obsessed with 2000s pop groups, Joel and David get into "Popstars" Australia acts Bardot and Scandal'Us. In this fabulous and heartfelt chat, Mýa discusses her breaking into the industry as a teen, the story behind 'Case of The Ex', her experience making 'Lady Marmalade' (with Christina Aguilera, P!nk and Lil' Kim), her favourites on the "Moodring" album, and the sonic suggestion Prince gave her. She also reminisced on filming "Chicago" with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Renee Zellweger, and explained what happened to her hotly-anticipated Broadway debut as Velma Kelly. Mýa is, without doubt, one of the first 2000s pop/R&B stars we saw deftly navigate her way into a successful career as an independent artist. Joel and David chat with her about the ill-fated "Liberation" project that led to an unexpected but freeing new chapter in her career, and her gorgeous new single 'Space & Time' - the healing bop we all need in 2020. There's so much more to this inspiring and brilliant artist than meets the eye! We hope you too will fall head over heels with Mýa after listening to this episode. 16 Sep 2020 | 31: Mis-Teeq | 01:28:01
It's literally scandalous that Right Back At Ya! hasn't done a Mis-Teeq episode until now... but here we are at last.
Joel and David are celebrating the Goddesses of Garage in this banging throwback fest that follows the origins of Mis-Teeq, from their early line-up to their meteoric rise that saw them score seven consecutive UK Top 10 hits and achieve international success. Together they fondly reminisce on Mis-Teeq memories from their vastly different childhoods in Romford and Melbourne, while simultaneously brainstorm big ideas for the band's big reunion. From the infectious Garage cuts of 'Why?' and 'All I Want', it was clear the holy trinity of Sabrina Washington, Alesha Dixon, and Su-Elise Nash were going to be unstoppable. With the double platinum-selling success of their debut album "Lickin' On Both Sides", they showed the world their fine art of mixing Garage, pop and R&B into one distinct sound - and solidly repped it from the MOBO Awards to Brit Awards stage. Together Joel and David also strut through the blockbuster hit 'Scandalous' and Mis-Teeq's sumptuous second album "Eye Candy", and their ambitious American takeover with the self-titled "Mis-Teeq" album, before the sad and sudden split just four years after their first single. If you're high class with a nice ass, and you ain't sippin' if it ain't Cristal... then pour yourself a glass of something good and roll on with the Right Back At Ya! boys in this fun-filled episode. 01 Nov 2020 | 32: 20 Years of Spice Girls "Forever" | 01:41:01
Now it's time to get down with the Right Back At Ya! boys as they celebrate 20 years of the last Spice Girls' album "Forever". #JusticeForForever, anyone?
For two decades, this R&B-infused Spice Girls era - highlighted by the UK No.1 single 'Holler' and 'Let Love Lead The Way' - has felt somewhat underappreciated or even misunderstood.
Together, Joel and David trace the journey of this third Spice Girls album starting with 'Goodbye' in 1998, the group's Christmas No.1 post Geri. They uncover the hectic year in Spice Camp in 1999, leading up to the spectacular "Christmas in Spice World" tour where they debuted new songs: 'Holler', 'Right Back At Ya', and 'W.O.M.A.N'.
There's no denying that this line up with Emma Bunton, Melanie C, Mel B and Victoria Beckham was the band's most vocally formidable. Working with American hitmakers Darkchild and Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, "Forever" took the Spice Girls' sound out of the 90s and into the slick 2000s pop R&B landscape.
If you wanna have some fun, go pour yourself a glass of wine, and fasten your seat belt for a super fun nostalgic ride back to Spice World (via Brent Cross)! PS - Don't miss our mega two-part Solo Spice Girls episodes! Just scroll back, huns.

It's about time we are celebrating one of Britain's greatest pop groups of the 2000s: Sugababes. In the first part of what would hopefully be a growing series, Joel and David tap into the origins of Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan. Coinciding with the 20th anniversary of the debut Sugababes album "One Touch" this month, the Right Back At Ya! boys dive into the musicality, frivolity and challenges of one of Britain's most iconic girl groups of the past two decades.
From 'Overload' to 'New Year' and 'Run For Cover', before the dramatic first line up change that saw the introduction of one-time Atomic Kitten Heidi Range into the iconic trio, this episode sees not only the genesis of Sugababes but their breakthrough into the mainstream pop zeitgeist with 'Freak Like Me' and 'Round Round', and the "Angels With Dirty Faces" album.
Join the Right Back At Ya! boys as they dive into Chapter 1 of the Babedom with album tracks, fond memories, beloved B-sides and everything in between!

20 Dec 2020 | 34: Martine McCutcheon, Michelle Gayle, Adam Rickitt, Jennifer Ellison: UK Soap Star to Pop Star Special | 01:59:22
This is a hun-tastic cultural exchange like no other as London native Joel takes his Aussie co-host David through the UK's most iconic soap stars turned pop stars in the 1990s and 2000s from Eastenders, Coronation Street, Hollyoaks, and Brookside.
The Right Back At Ya! boys pay homage to Martine McCutcheon, a British national treasure and beloved "Love Actually" star who rose to fame through Eastenders before launching a pop career in 1999 with her UK #1 hit 'Perfect Moment' - her first of five consecutive UK Top 10 solo singles. The multi-talented star served major bops like 'I'm Over You' and her Donna Summer cover of 'On The Radio' in her second album era "Wishing" in 2000 before breaking into musical theatre. Michelle Gayle is undoubtedly one of Britain's most credible and crucial soap-turned-music stars. Joel and David celebrate her impact and discography from the signature 90s hit 'Sweetness' through to her 7 UK Top 30 singles including 'Freedom', 'Happy Just To Be With You', and 'Do You Know', and her two studio albums. This special would not be complete without a major shout-out to Adam Rickitt's hi-NRG Eurodance album "Good Times", which spawned the iconic UK #5 hit 'I Breathe Again', and also Jennifer Ellison's dead rocky Top 20 singles 'Baby I Don't Care' and 'Bye Bye Boy'. There are also nods to the fabulous pop releases by Will Mellor, Claire Sweeney, Matthew Marsden, Sean Maguire, Tracy Shaw, Sid Owen, and Leticia Dean! Known for celebrating the best of 2000s pop music, the Right Back At Ya! boys are really stepping out of their zone in this fun-filled, two-hour special that taste tests everything from 90s Eurodance to R&B, rock to disco-pop and power ballads... and even musical numbers. Unwind from the dramas of 2020 with Right Back At Ya's recap of our UK soap stars' most vibrant tunes! Follow us for more 2000s pop love:

02 Apr 2021 | 38: Kylie Minogue - "Light Years" | 01:20:50
Please fasten your seatbelts. Our names are Joel and David, and we'll be your 2000s pop guide. Join us on this fabulous journey flying back 21 years to celebrate Kylie Minogue's iconic "Light Years" album!
After a 'dead edgeh' and experimental indie phase in the 90s, our Aussie legend made the comeback of all comebacks in 2000 with a return to her pop roots.
The glamorous disco and Eurodance-flavoured "Light Years" reignited Kylie's career and set her on a path to becoming dance-pop royalty in the new century. From the now iconic gold hot pants in the Studio 54 fizzed 'Spinning Around' (shout out Paula Abdul!) to the Y2K(ylie) anthem of 'On A Night Like This', which became the heartbeat of national pride around the 2000 Sydney Olympics... the moments kept coming.
Joel and David share their individual journeys into the Kylie fandom and faves from this album - from the modern queer classic 'Your Disco Needs You' to 'Please Stay', and 'Loveboat'. Plus, they pick highlights from her dazzling UK and Australian "On A Night Like This" Tour.
This nostalgia packed celebration feels especially fitting following Kylie's recent return to form with 2020's "DISCO" album, so take a breath and take the plunge, my dear!

13 Apr 2021 | 39: A*Teens - 'Upside Down' and beyond, the story of Sweden's teen pop icons | 01:26:16
Joel and David are summoning every remaining ounce of "Teen Spirit" within for this absolute floor-filler of an episode. Our 2000s pop explorers are jumping into A*Teens, the iconic Swedish pop group who made their mark halfway around the world from Stockholm to Singapore, Mexico City to Malibu and... Romford!
Originally formed as a new generation ABBA tribute group, the "ABBA-Teens" quickly evolved to A*Teens and became artists in their own right, releasing four studio albums and selling millions of records worldwide. Thanks to eternally effervescent bangers like 'Upside Down', 'Halfway Around The World', 'Floorfiller' and 'Can't Help Falling In Love', the A*Teens were the moment on Radio Disney and Nickelodeon in the early 2000s - they even toured the States with legends like Britney and *NSYNC! Superfan Joel takes David on a celebratory lap of the A*Teens' albums - "Teen Spirit", "Pop 'Til You Drop!" and "New Arrival" - before wrapping up their journey with the "Greatest Hits" and a recap of Marie Serneholt, Sara Lumholdt, Dhani Lennevald and Amit Paul's careers after the band split. 07 Jun 2021 | 42: Steps Part 1 - "Step One" and "Steptacular" | 2000s Pop Music Podcast | 01:41:02
It's an absolute Tragedy that it's taken the Right Back At Ya! boys this long to get to Steps but love (and your requests) have got a hold on our hearts, so here we are diving into one of Britain's most important pop groups of the 90s and early 2000s.
Unlike a lot of the pop faves we cover, we're so lucky to still have Steps actively making music and touring to this day; but on this episode Joel and David go right back to "Step One"... literally.
We cover the formation of the band with Claire Richards, Ian "H" Watkins, Lisa Scott-Lee, Faye Tozer and Lee Latchford-Evans (aka The Latch, aka The JB's childhood heartthrob) through to the peak of their careers.
When Steps burst on the scene with the boot-scootin' and line-dancing '5,6,7,8' in 1997, no one could've predicted what a phenomenon they'd become. The fantastic five swiftly went on to sell over 20 million records worldwide, clocking up 14 consecutive UK Top 5 singles, and three multi-platinum albums in three years, selling out arena shows along the way! Joel and David share memories of Steps from their childhoods in Essex and Malaysia, and what they've come to adore from the "Step One" and "Steptacular" albums over time - including all the bangers you stan from 'Last Thing On My Mind' to 'Deeper Shade of Blue', 'Tragedy' to 'One For Sorrow', 'Love's Got A Hold On My Heart', and 'Summer of Love'... just to name a few.
Get out your old Steps CDs, unfold the signature choreography tutorials inside, and start reliving the magic that's Better Best (Not) Forgotten!

21 Jun 2021 | 43: Nicola Roberts - "Cinderella's Eyes" | 2000s Pop Music Podcast | 01:06:43
Girls Aloud fans, maybe it's your Lucky Day? Your Right Back At Ya! boys are celebrating Nicola Roberts' iconic and critically-acclaimed "Cinderella's Eyes" album. This year marks 10 years since the #TeamGinge movement started with the dead edgeh 'Beat of My Drum', hemmed by Diplo. Honest, colourful and a bit cheeky. This remains one of the most exciting solo popstar breakout moments in our minds, with Nicola really flexing her songwriting and vocal chops while serving 'gritty London cool' in the visuals.
Joel and David revisit every detail of this incredible body of work from the album photoshoot, through to the fan-fave b-sides ('Disco, Blisters and a Comedown', anyone?) and Nic's performances at G-A-Y and T4 On The Beach.
As they compare notes from David's pop music blog in the 2010s and the Harrod's Dainty Doll cosmetics counter, it is clear there is so much to L-O-V-E with this album that only gets better with age, featuring gems like 'Yo-Yo', 'Lucky Day', 'Porcelain Heart' and 'Gladiator'. Strap in and let's get on with the show-show-show-show-show!

23 Jul 2021 | 44: Destiny's Child - "Survivor" | 2000s Pop Music Podcast | 01:18:33
Pop fans, can you handle this? Because the RBAY! boys are celebrating 20 years of Destiny's Child's iconic "Survivor" era. It's nothing but pure love and emotions taking Joel and David over as they reminisce on this DC3 era - with lots of memories of karaoke and childhood choreography along the way!
From the moment they returned with 'Independent Women Part 1' in the "Charlie's Angels" movie soundtrack, it was clear Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams did not come to play. This era saw the trio take control of their narrative (and destiny) with hits like 'Survivor', turning the negativity around their infamous line-up changes into pure platinum success. Join Joel and David as they revisit faves from the "Survivor" album - including 'Bootylicious', 'Emotion', 'Fancy', 'Happy Face' and 'Dangerously In Love'. But also everything else in this epic chapter of the DC Universe! From 2000 to 2002, Destiny's Child launched a No.1 album with 4 US Top 10 singles - two of which were No.1 hits. They also released a Christmas album, remix album, autobiography, and embarked on a world tour... and Beyoncé even found a moment to star in her first movie, "Carmen: A Hip Hopera". You ready? Hook on your seatbelts, it's time for take off!

08 Aug 2021 | 45: Young Divas (Jessica Mauboy, Ricki-Lee, Paulini, Kate DeAraugo and Emily Williams) | 01:31:16
We are celebrating the legends of Down HUNder in this special episode dedicated to Australian Idol supergroup Young Divas, which featured an all-star line-up of Jessica Mauboy, Ricki-Lee, Paulini, Kate DeAraugo and Emily Williams. Brace yourself for Right Back At Ya!'s most fabulous 'handbags-on-the-floor' episode yet!
This multi-platinum-selling quartet of vocal powerhouses was never meant to be an official recording group - Paulini, Ricki-Lee, Kate and Emily only teamed up for a one-off single and joint national tour. But everything kicked off after the unexpected success of their debut single 'This Time I Know It's For Real', a high-energy dance pop remake of the Donna Summer classic. Together David and Joel explore the Young Divas' hit albums of covers - "Young Divas" (2006) and "New Attitude" (2007) - the latter featuring Jessica Mauboy, who replaced Ricki-Lee. It's big vocals, impeccable harmonies, and a relentless stream of classic anthems like 'Happenin' All Over Again', 'It's Raining Men', 'Gloria', 'Searchin', 'Turn Me Loose', 'Tell It To My Heart', 'Got To Be Real', and more. It's time to summon your inner Young Diva, shake off the lockdown blues, and - for the uninitiated - enjoy this little introduction to all five divas' solo careers. 23 Aug 2021 | 46: Sophie Ellis-Bextor Part 1 - "Read My Lips" and "Shoot From The Hip" | 2000s Pop Music Podcast | 01:21:57
It may be a Mixed Up World right now but leave that all behind and escape to the 2000s with your Right Back At Ya! boys in this celebration of Sophie Ellis-Bextor. This month marks 20 years of Dame Sophie's iconic debut solo album era "Read My Lips". Catapulting from the global smash of 'Groovejet' with Spiller, former indie-frontwoman Sophie transformed into a disco-pop darling with a string of iconique Top 3 hits: 'Murder On The Dancefloor', 'Take Me Home' and 'Get Over You'. It was the dawn of a fruitful career that still resonates to this day in her Kitchen Disco era. Together Joel and David transform into Fabulous Bextor Boys as they study her timeless style, her music videos and mesmerising output from the "Read My Lips" and "Shoot From The Hip" albums. 10 Sep 2021 | 47: Mariah Carey - "Glitter" | 2000s Pop Music Podcast | 01:21:44
Lambs and pop fans, we are celebrating 20 years of Mariah Carey's iconic "Glitter" era! Dahhling, it may have been a little bleak two decades ago but we made it through the rain. Join Joel and David as we "Glitter-wash" our memories of this film and soundtrack with some much-needed positivity. Thanks to the #JusticeForGlitter movement and Mariah opening up about the details of this chapter in her amazing memoir "The Meaning of Mariah Carey" - we now have so much more to unpack.
So zip up your hot pink race car driver suits, let's throw it back to 2001 when Mariah was giving us 80s funk, post-disco, and hip hop meauxments with 'Loverboy' and the "Glitter" soundtrack. From the Rick James-penned banger for Sylk, 'All My Life', through to A+ covers of 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' and 'Didn't Mean To Turn You On', Mariah really captured the energy of the 80s and gave it her signature tzush (and blockbuster ballads). Joel is convinced "Glitter" is the definitive revision of "A Star Is Born" and it's hard to disagree, really. Give it another watch - or watch with fresh adoring eyes today - and you're sure to find something to love in performances from Mariah, Terrence Howard, Max Beesley, Da Brat, Valarie Pettiford, Padma Lakshmi, and Whisper The Cat. 04 Oct 2021 | 48: Jessica Simpson Part 1 - "Sweet Kisses" and "Irresistible" | 01:27:03
The day has finally come. The RBAY! boys are finally diving into Jessica Simpson's discography, after 3.5 years of Joel relentlessly pestering David to do this. The Southern belle pop diva and 2000s pop culture icon we are celebrating is famed as one of The JB's Fab Four legends - alongside Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore.
Together Joel and David get into Jessica's early years leading into her shining debut in 1999 as Tommy Mottola's new teen pop sensation with 'I Wanna Love You Forever'. They get into highlights of Successica Simpson's multi-platinum-selling debut album "Sweet Kisses", which featured Destiny's Child and her then-beau Nick Lachey. Whether we're pressing play on skyscraper power ballads or premium bops like 'I Think I'm In Love With You', 'Irresistible' and 'A Little Bit' - there really is more than meets the eye with Jessica's story. If you mostly know Jess from the MTV Newlyweds era onwards, this is a comprehensive and loving guide to her formative years in the spotlight - with some stories gleaned from her heartfelt memoir "Open Book" (a must-read!). 20 Oct 2021 | 49: Alexandra Burke - "Overcome" | 2000s Pop Music Podcast | 01:21:20
Calling all Bad Boys and Demon Twinks who have been telling DJs to play 'All Night Long'! We are celebrating one of the UK's finest 'total package' popstars: Alexandra Burke.
For the first time in Right Back At Ya! history, we are covering an X Factor contestant - and we're starting with the bar raised high with not only an X Factor winner but a record-breaking artist who has sold over a million albums around the world, earning three Brit Award nominations in three consecutive years. Together Joel and David dive into Alexandra Burke's epic chart-topping debut album "Overcome" and its six Top 20 singles - three of which were No.1 hits: 'Hallelujah', 'Bad Boys' feat. Flo Rida, and 'Start Without You'. From her X Factor Series 5 journey through to whipping out RedOne bangers like 'Broken Heels' and A-list collabs with Pitbull ('All Night Long') and Ne-Yo ('Good Night, Good Morning') - Burke went big! It's no wonder we're still shook 12 years after its release. Follow Right Back At Ya!

03 Nov 2021 | 50: Sugababes Part 3 - "Change" and "Catfights and Spotlights" | 2000s Pop Music Podcast | 01:32:21
Can we bring yesterday back around, pop fans? Because the wait is finally over for one of our most requested episodes yet: Sugababes Part 3! Casually arriving hot on the heels of the Babes' 20th anniversary reissue of "One Touch" and news of them headlining Mighty Hoopla next year.
Join Joel and David as we jump back to 2007 to celebrate one of Britain's greatest girl groups, the Sugababes, in their proper huge mainstream era "Change", which saw them top the album charts and score their sixth No.1 single with 'About You Now' - a mere six months after their last joint No.1 single with Girls Aloud for Comic Relief: 'Walk This Way'. What a year!
As well as all your "Change" highlights like 'Denial', 'My Love Is Pink' and 'Never Gonna Dance Again', the Right Back At Ya! boys also reminisce on Keisha, Heidi and Amelle's iconic live gigs, promo appearances and music videos.
We also shine a light on their often sidelined sixth album "Catfights and Spotlights", which showed off a brilliantly sophisticated vintage soul/funk sound. From the Boots anthem 'Girls' and 'No Can Do' through to fan faves like 'Side Chick' and 'You On A Good Day', there's something for everyone here.
You'll know this from Parts 1 and 2 of our Sugababes episodes earlier this year but Right Back At Ya! is all about showing love and putting respect on all six 'Babes. Stay tuned for our "Sweet 7" episode coming real soon!

24 Nov 2021 | 51: Sugababes Part 4 - "Sweet 7" to 'Freedom' | 2000s Pop Music Podcast | 01:32:36
Babedom, you wanna Get Sexy with your temporary tattoos, don't you? We couldn't possibly leave you hanging without a "Sweet 7" appreciation episode. Joel and David are here to celebrate this glossy and often-sidelined last Sugababes album (to date) and the final single from Amelle, Heidi and Jade: 'Freedom'.
Your favourite 2000s pop defenders pick things up in the rollercoaster year that was 2009 when Keisha Buchanan, Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah jump head first into a massive new era, after signing a US deal with Jay Z's label. Back with a brash, maximalist club banger - 'Get Sexy' - the trio looked set to prove haters wrong when the Bruno Mars-produced single shot to No.2. But a sudden line-up change altered the course of history with Keisha dramatically ousted and replaced by UK Eurovision queen Jade Ewen, who was midway promoting her sultry solo single 'My Man'.
Despite the challenges, Sugababes 4.0 still turned out two UK Top 10 singles - 'About A Girl' and 'Wear My Kiss' - and delivered a major pop girl group album. It may not be a quintessential 'Sugababes album' but Joel and David can guarantee you'll find something to love here from 'Wait For You' to 'Thank You For The Heartbreak' and 'She's A Mess'! Goes without saying but nothing but absolute love and respect to all six 'Babes. We cannot wait to see the Origibabes - Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan - headline Mighty Hoopla in 2022!

15 Dec 2021 | 52: Christina Aguilera Part 1 - Debut album, 'Reflection' to 'Lady Marmalade' | 01:28:20
Fighters, rise up because we are diving into Christina Aguilera's epic debut album era. Off the back of her hugely-deserved 2021 People's Choice Music Icon Award, it's about time this 2000s pop music podcast dived into Xtina's catalogue. In this first part of our Christina Aguilera journey, Joel and David celebrate the smash debut album "Christina Aguilera", which spawned the massive hits 'Genie In A Bottle', 'Come On Over Baby (All I Want Is You)', 'What A Girl Wants' and 'I Turn To You'.
We trace one of our generation's most influential vocalist's journey from the Mickey Mouse Club (with Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake) through to 'Reflection', on Disney's Mulan soundtrack, all the way up to 2001's Grammy-winning global smash 'Lady Marmalade' with fellow divas P!nk, Lil Kim and Mya. Of course, your Right Back At Ya! boys had to also touch on Christina's hugely successful Spanish language album "Mi Reflejo", her Holiday album "My Kind of Christmas", and the cheekily released album of demos from her teens "Just Be Free". We're here to give whatever pop fans want, whatever pop fans need. *** Note: Since recording and completing the episode, The Clapham Grand event the Right Back At Ya! boys were due to appear at on 17 December 2021 has been cancelled. 09 Jan 2022 | 53: Steps Part 2 - "Buzz", "Gold: Greatest Hits" and "The Last Dance" | 01:19:57
What better way to kick off 2022 and the '25 Years of Steps' celebration than a new episode deep-diving into this legendary British pop group's discography? Pop fans, we know you've been waiting for this one!
Join our 2000s pop defenders Joel and David as they unpack Steps' third studio album "Buzz", which saw the group level-up their sound and image for a new millennium. After achieving global success with their signature effervescent 90s ABBA-style bangers, Steps were ready to spread their wings and take creative control. Working with new producers and leaning into the teen-pop boom, they hit home run with 'Stomp' (their second UK No.1 single) and the absolute classic 'It's The Way You Make Me Feel'.
2001's "Gold: Greatest Hits" - featuring the smash cover of 'Chain Reaction' - turned out to be one giant glittery Trojan Horse. After the accompanying tour, Steps made the shock announcement on Boxing Day that they were splitting up. It may have marked the end of an era for one of Britain's most successful pop groups of the 90s/2000s but who could have imagined that 25 years later we'd be here enjoying new music and dazzling concerts by Lee, Claire, Faye, Lisa and H. So no tears at The Last Dance, please! Let's celebrate this golden era of our pop faves and look forward to what the future holds for Steps. Follow Right Back At Ya!

14 Feb 2022 | 54: Girls Aloud Part 1 - "Popstars: The Rivals" and "Sound of The Underground" | 01:20:46
IT'S ABOUT TIME! Joel and David are finally jumping into one of the UK's greatest pop groups ever. This year marks 20 years of Girls Aloud and your 2000s pop explorers are going all the way back to the beginning with "Popstars: The Rivals", the ITV show that catapulted Cheryl, Nadine, Nicola, Kimberley and Sarah into the national spotlight.
From the eternally fresh sonics of 'Sound of The Underground', their debut single, it was clear that Girls Aloud were destined for greatness. Working with Xenomania, the girls went on to reshape the British pop landscape with their rule-breaking style - kicking off this era with classics like 'No Good Advice', 'Life Got Cold' and the career-changing hit 'Jump'. Your Right Back At Ya! boys also pick their faves from Girls Aloud's debut album, which featured contributions from Swedish pop producers and some surprising names in the writing credits! 14 Mar 2022 | 56: Aussie Special Part 1: Vanessa Amorosi and Nikki Webster | 01:17:40
Your favourite pop explorers Joel and David are heading Down Under for this special two-part episode celebrating some unforgettable Australian pop icons from the late 90s and early 2000s.
This episode is all about the vocal powerhouse diva Vanessa Amorossi and teen-pop sensation Nikki Webster. Both were absolutely essential to Australian popular culture of the decade and their vibrant pop bops are still adored by millions of millennials to this very day. Best known for her international dance hit 'Absolutely Everybody', Vanessa Amorosi is unquestionably one of Australia's greatest vocalists of her generation. Joel and David get into her multi platinum-selling debut album "The Power", which also includes hits like 'Shine', 'The Power' and 'Every Time I Close My Eyes'. They also look into Vanessa's more European-facing highlights like 'One Thing Leads to Another' and the French "Ab Fab" theme 'Champagne, Champagne', before toasting to her monumental comeback in 2008 with 'Perfect' and 2009's banger 'This Is Who I Am'.
By his own admission, Nikki Webster has the pop career Joel has always wanted. Straight after her unforgettable role in the 2000 Sydney Olympics Opening and Closing ceremonies, 13-year old Nikki signed a major label deal and turned her newfound profile into a successful pop career that also spawned a clothing line and her own businesses. The savvy dancer and musical theatre star will forever be immortalised for her breakthrough smash 'Strawberry Kisses' but Joel and David are not stopping there. Cue gems like 'Depend on Me', 'The Best Days', 'Something More Beautiful' and the Delta Goodrem-penned 'Let's Dance'!
If you're not familiar with these Aussie ladies of pop, we hope you enjoy this introduction and if you do, we hope this nostalgic trip brings you joy. Stay tuned for Part 2 dropping in a few days, where we get into Sister 2 Sister, Leah Haywood and Joanne! Follow Right Back At Ya!

17 Mar 2022 | 57: Aussie Special Part 2: Sister2Sister, Leah Haywood and Joanne | 00:58:00
Following the fabulous introduction into 2000s Aussie pop divas Vanessa Amorosi and Nikki Webster's careers, this second part of our special celebrates ARIA Award-winning duo Sister2Sister, the talented singer-songwriter Leah Haywood, and vocal powerhouse Joanne.
Sister2Sister, made up of sisters Christine and Sharon Muscat, made a splash in Australia and the UK with their hits 'Sister' and 'What's A Girl To Do' in the early 2000s. They weren't just a pair of incredible vocalists but also super engaging live performers who can slay a Y2K popstar choreography! The sisters' success saw them score an ARIA Award and support Britney Spears and 5ive on tour outside Australia, and feature on the Bring It On soundtrack. In the past decade or so, Aussie hit songwriter and producer Leah Haywood has been working behind the scenes in LA on some of our fave bops via Selena Gomez, BLACKPINK, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and more but we're taking it all the way back to her 2000s popstar debut "Leah", which spawned inescapable bops like 'We Think It's Love', 'Takin' Back What's Mine' and 'Summer of Love'. With Leah now thankfully back in the spotlight as an artist after two decades, releasing top-tier material under the pseudonym Haywood, it feels right to go back to her 2000s efforts and celebrate her journey. The final artist on our two-part 2000s Aussie Pop special is Joanne, a real vocal powerhouse and long-lost Young Diva member, in our humble opinion. Big soul diva vocals with camp, Y2K disco-pop production and dance bangers - everything about Joanne's discography is a maximalist 'girls night out' experience packed with sass and handbags-on-the-floor moments, from the signature late 90s banger 'Jackie' through to 'So Damn Fine', 'I Don't Know' and 'Busted'. 28 Mar 2022 | 58: Kelly Clarkson - "Thankful", "Breakaway" and "From Justin to Kelly" | 01:44:34
Here's the thing, we started out friends... and now Joel and David are almost four years into making Right Back At Ya! and it is long overdue that we cover Kelly Clarkson. One of the most powerful and recognisable vocalists of the 2000s, Kelly catapulted to worldwide fame after winning the very first season of American Idol 20 years ago.
Joel and David are diving into her incredibly iconic first two albums - "Thankful" and "Breakaway" - with a very special celebratory review of the cinematic classic "From Justin to Kelly". Joel had the poster up on his bedroom wall and owns four copies of this movie musical on DVD. There is literally no one better for David to watch this film for the first time with! Kelly Brianne's range is truly remarkable - from the classic pop balladry of 'A Moment Like This' to the spiky R&B-pop-rock fusion of 'Miss Independent' and then arena-sized radio-ready rock with 'Since U Been Gone' and 'Behind These Hazel Eyes'. Join Joel and David on this nostalgic dead rockeh trip back to their teenage years, respectively reflecting from growing up in the UK and Australia. Pop fans, we're getting glammed up at Curls Allowed for a night out at the Eskimo Club! Join Joel and David for a fabulous, nostalgic look back at Girls Aloud's iconic second album era, "What Will The Neighbours Say?".
This double platinum-selling album really took Cheryl, Nadine, Nicola, Kimberley and Sarah to new heights. Completely written and produced by Xenomania, it set the blueprint for the group's sonic identity and gave us some of the most interesting pop music of the time! This era saw Girls Aloud come into their own and give us range - from the addictive 80s Eurodance inspired 'The Show' through to the signature hit 'Love Machine' and chart-topping cover 'I'll Stand By You' as well as the dead rockeh 'Wake Me Up'. 25 Apr 2022 | 60: Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan | 01:30:42
Get ready to Turn It Up because the Rumors are true - we are celebrating two pop culture icons of the 2000s: Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan! Join Joel and David for a bubbly, nostalgic dive into the debut album eras of "Paris" and "Speak".
As one of the first new mega celebrities of the new century, socialite turned reality TV pioneer, entrepreneur, DJ, actress and popstar; Paris Hilton was inescapable in the 2000s. At the height of her fame, she did what any decent celebrity would do and released a pop album crafted by some of the industry's biggest hitmakers including Scott Storch (Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera) to JR Rotem (Rihanna). The "Paris" album remains a pristine party record, glistening with hip-hop infused club bangers like 'Turn It Up' and the breezy reggae bop 'Stars Are Blind' as well as spiky pop-rock moments like 'Nothing in This World' and 'Screwed' (insert Joel voice: "Justice for Haylie Duff!").
Disney and "Mean Girls" star Lindsay Lohan was always destined to release music alongside her blossoming film career. Her huge mainstream debut album "Speak" arrived in the year she turned 18 after a steady tease of her music through soundtracks for "Freaky Friday", "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" and "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement". Hemmed by Kara Dioguardi (songwriting queen for pop-rock stars of this time) and John Shanks (Ashlee Simpson), this guitar-pop driven coming-of-age album is packed full of emotions. Flip a bird at the paparazzi with 'Rumors', scream at your ex with 'Over', and get what you want with corkers like 'Speak' and 'First'!

08 Aug 2022 | 63: Christina Aguilera - "Stripped" | 01:21:21
Ladies, move! Gentlemen, move! Non-binary friends, move! It's about time for our arrival. Your favourite 2000s pop explorers Joel and David are back with a celebration of Christina Aguilera's iconic "Stripped" album era, which turns 20 this year!
It was truly a pop culture reset when our "Caggie Aggie" dropped 'Dirrty' featuring Redman. The gritty R&B and hip-hop banger remains an immediate floor-filler to this very day and a true staple of Xtina's live shows. What followed was the boldest and most influential work of her career thus far, a body of work earning multiple Grammy-nominations, spawning five hit singles and over 10 million copies sold worldwide. Your RBAY! boys are celebrating the hits - 'Dirrty', 'Beautiful', 'Fighter', 'Can't Hold Us Down' feat. Lil Kim, and 'The Voice Within' - as well as their favourite album tracks. 08 Nov 2023 | 84: Madonna - "Music" | 01:20:19
Do you like to Boogie Woogie? Because your Right Back At Ya! boys are covering the Queen of Pop for the first time, so grab that pink cowboy hat and tiara - and let's get to it! With The Celebration Tour going full throttle now (and yes we will give our thoughts on it!), it feels like the perfect moment to dive into Madonna's 2000 album "Music". Joel and David dive into this monumental album, including the singles and music videos, and relive Madonna's Brixton Academy gig which was impressively instantly live streamed to a global audience on the world wide web! *insert dial-up modem tone*
The "Music" era was a massive turning point for her Madgesty both creatively and personally. It's a new millennium, new experimental body of work with a new collaborator (Mirwais) and, it also marks Madonna's first album made exclusively in Europe. The avant-garde French house and electronica influences mixed with warm acoustic guitars, acid techno and folk influences brought us big commercial hits like 'Music', 'Don't Tell Me' and 'What It Feels Like For A Girl'; but also wild dance tracks like 'Impressive Instant' and 'Runaway Lover'. Despite the European influences, visually she gave us one of her most memorable signature looks with the camp, country Western aesthetic. There is so much to unpack together! 24 Nov 2023 | 85: Lost Girl Bands Vol. 1 - Mini Viva, Dolly Rockers and Girls Can't Catch | 01:11:25
This podcast truly loves a pop girl group - and it shows! For years we have talked about doing a special episode celebrating the 'lost' girl bands of the 2000s and now here we are. It felt absolutely right to kick things off with the three distinct British girl groups that were launched in 2009: Mini Viva, Dolly Rockers and Girls Can't Catch. While these groups sadly disbanded not long after their launch, they will always live on in our hearts.
Together, Joel and David present you the girlies, getting into their singles and album sampler highlights, and more! Bring on the nostalgia! Mini Viva, the Xenomania pop duo of Britt and Frankee, released three singles 'Left My Heart in Tokyo', 'I Wish' and 'One Touch'. Dolly Rockers, who started their fledgling journey on The X Factor but returned stronger in a few years with the buzz-worthy track 'Je Suis Une Dolly' which led to a deal with Parlophone, culminating in their official debut single 'Gold Digger'. Fascination Records' Girls Can't Catch was positioned as the 'little sister' of label mate girl groups Girls Aloud and The Saturdays, but they ultimately left us wanting more after the release of their singles 'Keep Your Head Up' and 'Echo'. If you are loving what we're doing, let us know in the comments. Who would you like to see in a 'Lost Girl Bands Vol.2'? Welcome to our first ever Right Back At Ya! Book Club episode. It's a new thing we're doing to cross into the world of literature, just like so many of our popstars-turned-authors. For our very first attempt at this spin-off series; we're speaking with respected pop music journalist and author Michael Cragg, who released his first book - the very 'right up our street' - "Reach for the Stars - 1996-2006: Fame, Fallout and Pop's Final Party", which is now available in paperback. Hello, Christmas stocking filler!
This 'pop bible', as hailed by Joel, is a super fun look at the golden years of pop from Spice Girls through to the dawn of the reality show eras of Pop Idol, Popstars and The X Factor. Michael has literally spoken to so many legends in this book, including members of Spice Girls, 5ive, Steps, Girls Aloud, Sugababes, Blue, as well as hitmakers like Brian Higgins and Miranda Cooper of Xenomania, Richard X, MNEK, and industry legends like Peter Lorraine, Pete Waterman, Louis Walsh and... our very own Joel and David. Michael chats with our RBAY boys about his process in putting together this incredible pop oral history, and spotlights three songs by three artists he spoke with for the book. Happy New Year, pop fans! In celebration of Our Sophie returning to the Top 10 with her classic hit 'Murder On The Dancefloor' - thanks, Saltburn! - we are reissuing Episode 46, our very first Sophie Ellis-Bextor episode.
Recorded and launched back in 2021 (where did the time go?), Joel and David dived into Soph's first two albums "Read My Lips" and "Shoot From The Hip" - covering her career from 'Groovejet' through to the hits 'Take Me Home', 'Get Over You', 'Music Gets The Best of Me' and of course, 'Murder...'. 17 Jan 2024 | 89: Sophie Ellis-Bextor - "Make A Scene" with 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)' and more | 01:10:42
"Face to face, it's Murder on The Dancefloor. Cut to the chase, just give us what we came for!" Pop fans, we hear you loud and clear. It's a new year and the dawn of the Sophiessance Age! Joel and David are jumping in that time machine with the dials set for 2009 to 2011 for Sophie Ellis-Bextor's "Make A Scene" era - her clubbiest body of work yet!
This all-killer-no-filler fourth album marked the closing of Sophie's club disco chapter in the 2000s but she's not leaving the dancefloor without a bang! 'Heartbreak (Make Me A Dancer)' with Freemasons, 'Can't Fight This Feeling' with Junior Caldera, and 'Not Giving Up On Love' with Armin Van Buuren - these titan dance collaborations that are still beating strong in her discography were born from this time. Whether you're new to Sophie's work or a card-holding member of the 'Murder' cult; we all need to be bumping these tracks and getting them back up the charts. We got classy, Sophisticated offerings like 'Starlight' and 'Bittersweet' ("It's like a £20 bottle of wine!") to grittier indie club-friendly cuts like 'Under Your Touch', and retro Calvin Harris with 'Off & On'... it's time to get on the revolution! 15 Feb 2024 | 91: Alexis Strum on pop justice for "Addicted" and "Cocoon" albums, plus Kylie and Rachel Stevens | 00:48:18
We love a bit of pop justice, don't we?! And today we're fist-pumping through a ton of it in our bubbly and inspiring catch up with Alexis Strum, one of Britain's best kept pop secrets of the 2000s.
Kylie and Rachel Stevens recorded Alexis's songs, which became everlasting fan favourites. She has written with Billy Steinberg (Madonna, Cyndi Lauper), Brian Higgins and Richard X and yet, tragically, neither of her two major label albums ever saw the light of day... until 2023 when Alexis managed to get them released officially, two decades later. At last, fans can enjoy "Addicted" and "Cocoon" - the two contrasting and sumptuous sides of Alexis Strum's 2000s output. "Addicted" - a self-dubbed "sexy, electro bitch" body of work - almost was her official debut. The once-lost album features 'Nothing Good About This Goodbye' (done with Xenomania, later released by Rachel Stevens) and 'Still Standing' (recorded by Kylie on her "Body Language" album). The following album, "Cocoon", presented a more authentic, singer-songwriter artiste - featuring the single 'Bad Haircut', 'World Without Your Love' and 'Go My Own Way'. Joel and David find out how Alexis has navigated the ups and downs of being a popstar in the 2000s, how she has harnessed the power of social media to tell her story and re-written her narrative. This is an episode unlike any other! 01 Mar 2024 | 92: Kylie Minogue - "Body Language" | 01:33:16
In celebration of Kylie's "Body Language" album coming out on vinyl, your fun-loving 2000s pop explorers Joel and David are diving deep back into 2003 and 2004 to rediscover this iconique body of work.
This is one of Kylie's most underrated albums with plenty of fan-favourites, including hits like the chart-topper 'Slow', 'Red Blooded Woman' and 'Chocolate'. The sensual and confident mix of electro-pop and R&B really took Our Kylie to a new dimension. Together, we revisit and discuss the music videos, photoshoots, album highlights, b-sides, promo performances, and that spectacular one-off "Money Can't Buy" show in London, later issued on DVD as "Body Language Live". From "Kath & Kim" to Justin Timberlake, Britney, Dannii, Cat Deeley, Sean Paul, Ludacris, Ms Dynamite and Alexis Strum... what a truly unique mix of characters and nostalgia connected to the "Body Language" era! 21 Mar 2024 | 93: Pop Songwriter Hannah Robinson on Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Geri Halliwell, Rachel Stevens, Dannii Minogue, Annie, Richard X and more | 01:22:25
We are delighted to be chatting with one of our all-time favourite British pop songwriters, Hannah Robinson. Over the past two decades; you would've no doubt had on repeat the tracks Hannah worked on. Many of which were hit singles and eternal pop fan favourites like 'Some Girls' and 'So Good' (Rachel Stevens), 'Bittersweet' and 'Me & My Imagination' (Sophie Ellis-Bextor), 'Chewing Gum' (Annie), 'You Won't Forget About Me' (Dannii Minogue), 'Love Never Loved Me' (Geri Halliwell) and more.
In this very special episode, Joel and David sit down with Hannah to chat about how she went from recording Steps covers to writing with Richard X, and the aforementioned 2000s pop icons. She spills about the outrageous and unforgettable lyric from Geri Halliwell she rejected and their colourful sessions, a scandalous Frankie Bridge solo track, Nicola Roberts demos that were buried in the woods, and her career highs working with Lana Del Rey and Kylie! 06 Apr 2024 | 94: Britney Spears - "Oops!... I Did It Again" | 01:32:01
Hush. Just. Stop. Pop fans, it’s absolutely time that we jumped back into the world of Britney on the podcast! We are travelling back to the year 2000, with location pins dropped from Mars to Miami, to celebrate Britney’s iconic second album “Oops!… I Did It Again” and its accompanying world tour, which saw her in the very same room as our very own Joel Babbington for the first time in London.
This massively successful, Diamond-certified teen-pop album marks an 18-year-old Britney Jean beginning to evolve after the industry-shifting success of her debut “…Baby One More Time”. Whether it was showcasing a fiercer image on ‘Stronger’ with video director Joseph Kahn, or painting a portrait of a trapped celebrity in ‘Lucky’ - it’s clear Britney has something to say. What U See (Is What U Get). From the commanding MTV VMA performance of her Rolling Stones cover ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ to the softer, sensual side of the Herb Ritts video for ‘Don’t Let Me Be The Last To Know’; Joel and David are taking you on a deep-dive like no other of this era. The most comprehensive podcast episode dedicated to Billie Piper's music ever? We'd be tapped in every day and night, babe!
Depending on your walk of life, you may primarily know Billie Piper as the formidable actress, director and producer she is... or fondly recall meeting her first as a chart-dominating teen popstar of the early 2000s. Since the multi-million-selling "Honey To The B", the sensation from Swindon quickly became a major player in the British pop scene and the follow-up album was when things got super interesting. Joel and David get into Billie's defining second and final album (to date), "Walk of Life", which was released in 2000. Top tier producers and writers include Stargate, Eliot Kennedy (Spice Girls), Kara Dioguardi, Diane Warren and more! Among the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party and Smash Hits Tour of the time; we also dive into the singles, album highlights, b-sides, music videos, photo shoots and live performances that saw Billie shine like never before. Even, earning the title as "the UK's Britney". [Yes, we do get into the three different versions of 'Something Deep Inside']. 21 May 2024 | 96: Lost Girl Bands Vol. 2 - Neon Jungle, Parade and SoundGirl | 01:46:55
Joel and David are back with a new girl band episode and in a rare move for this 2000s pop podcast, we've opened the time portal and crossed into the future... the 2010s! Get ready, 'cause here comes a hurricane!
Today we're celebrating Neon Jungle, Parade and SoundGirl - three amazing UK girl groups backed by major labels that blasted on the scene between 2011 and 2013, but were sadly gone too soon. The vibes are confident! The fusion of electrifying girl band energy with loud fashion and even louder tunes means we are in for a seriously fun 2010s throwback episode. Ichi, ni, san... kaisu! Neon Jungle - made up of Jess Plummer, Shireen Cutkelvin, Asami Zdrenka and Amira McCarthy - scored four UK Top 20 hits including the No.4 smash 'Braveheart'. Their incredible album "Welcome To The Jungle" is packed with bangers, written by More Mega, CockNBullKid, MNEK, A*M*E and Charli XCX! Grab a pair of fake glasses, a stylish hat (or silk turban!), and give yourself a spritz of perfume, 'cause Parade is here. Bianca Claxton, Jess Agombar, Emily Biggs, Sian Charlesworth and Lauren Deegan definitely made a splash on arrival with their vibrant pop bops 'Louder' and 'Perfume'. The self-titled album is the real treasure trove here! Izzy Bizu, Olivia "Liv Lovelle" Redmond, and Nicole "Little Nikki" Shortland were SoundGirl, a pop R&B trio who worked with Miranda Cooper (Xenomania) and opened for Justin Bieber, Pixie Lott and The Wanted. It seemed criminal that they never got to release an album but we still can't get enough of the singles 'Don't Know Why' and 'I'm The Fool'! 27 Jun 2024 | 98: Pixie Lott on 15 Years of "Turn It Up" and returning to her roots with new album "Encino" | 01:24:08
This is one of the most special conversations we've ever had on the podcast. Joel and David are joined by chart-topping, BRIT-nominated pop singer songwriter Pixie Lott to celebrate 15 years since the release of her No.1-selling debut single, 'Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh)' and the massive debut album "Turn It Up", which sold over a million copies and spawned six Top 20 singles!
But we're going even further back to Joel and Pixie's shared secondary school memories. From train journeys listening to Pixie's early demos with cheeky McDonald's, to her skipping class to sing for music mogul LA Reid and signing her first major label deal; we go back to her teens and talk about her early music influences. We look back on the whirlwind years of countless studio sessions with some of pop's biggest hitmakers, music video shoots, a Pixie Lott-branded plane, opening for The Saturdays and Rihanna before embarking on her own headline tour "The Crazycats Tour". She also chats about her collaborations with Selena Gomez and Stevie Wonder, and a lost Joe Jonas duet; and how she finally created the album she has always wanted to make, "Encino". Don't miss Pixie Lott Live at London's Hoxton Hall on 11 July - tickets now on sale.
