14 Dec 2022 | Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise Retrospective with Lisa Wilcox —Episode 120 | 02:09:13
When Wes Craven first terrified audiences by unleashing dream demon Freddy Krueger in 1984, no one could have predicted that his film that had to scrape together financing just to get made would ultimately become one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. In the nearly 40 years since the first film was released, the “Nightmare on Elm Street” series has spawned nine total movies while earning more than $474 million at the box office. The series also managed to create one of the most iconic characters in horror history with fans still scared to fall asleep out of fear that Freddy might get them. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead as we wrap up our series on the entire “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise we’re going to take one final look at the house that Freddy built and we welcome a special guest as we interview Lisa Wilcox — the only final girl to truly survive her nightmares…. 07 Dec 2022 | Freddy vs. Jason Review — Episode 119 | 01:51:16
The idea for a movie pitting Freddy Krueger against Jason Voorhees actually dates all the back to 1987 when New Line Cinema and Paramount Pictures started talking about a crossover film following the success of “Nightmare on Elm Street Part 3: Dream Warriors” and “Friday the 13 the Part VI: Jason Lives.” Sadly, neither studio wanted to give up rights to the other character to make the film so the ambitious plans fell to the wayside. Talks about putting the two slasher icons into a single movie continued to bubble up over the years but it wasn’t until 1999 when the project really started to get support from the studios again. Over $6 million was reportedly spent on various scripts but eventually writers Mark Swift and Damian Shannon came up with an idea that everybody liked, which eventually led to Ronny Yu being hired as a director. Robert Englund returned for the eighth time to play Freddy while Ken Kirzinger was hired to portray Jason Voorhees despite early talks that Kane Hodder would come back to play the hockey mask killer again. When the film finally opened in 2003, the long awaited showdown landed at No. 1 at the box office for two weeks in a row as fans flocked to the theater to see two titans of horror square off… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to load up on hypnocil and jump in a van bound for Camp Crystal Lake as we review “Freddy vs. Jason”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

26 Oct 2022 | Terrifier 2 Review — Episode 113 | 01:27:22
Following the release of his first short film, writer and director Damien Leone began developing a script centered around an evil slasher named Art the Clown who would battle it out with a heroine wearing an angel costume. The idea got scrapped before Leone eventually released the film “Terrifier,” which brought Art the Clown to life in a graphic, blood-soaked movie that definitely got the attention of horror audiences. The biggest criticism around that film, however, was a lack of narrative, which made Leone revisit his original idea that would require more time to develop as he stayed dedicated to creating a sequel that would serve as a much bigger character study. The result was a film that pit Leone’s heroine against Art the Clown in another epic encounter that has forced some moviegoers to actually vomit and pass out due to the extreme imagery depicted on screen… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to pick up our garbage bag full of weapons and make sure the hacksaw is sharp as we review the 2022 horror film “Terrifier 2”… (Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell) Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

13 Nov 2020 | Episode 009 — Friday the 13th Part III 3D | 01:02:54
The massive success of the first two installments of Friday the 13th had proven to be box office gold. In 1982, Paramount wanted to keep the kill count high with a 3rd film in the franchise. After part 2 star Amy Steel turned down a returning role, director Steve Miner and company decided to capitalize on the resurgence of 3D technology to redefine the movie. The end result is a campy slasher that focuses a little too much on 3D scares, but ends up creating the key elements that define the entire Jason lore and became one of the most lucrative films in the entire series. We’re going to Camp Blood, so Someone find Shelly’s box of pranks, Damon better eat our stash before the cops find us, ready your harpoons, dust off your 3D glasses and try to keep your eyeballs in your skull, because we’re crushing heads this week on Rewind of the Living Dead with Friday the 13th, Part III, 3D. 21 Sep 2022 | Pearl Review: How Does the Prequel Stack Up to 'X'? — Episode 107 | 01:11:16
During the production of his hit slasher film “X,” director Ti West began developing a backstory for the character of Pearl as played by actor Mia Goth. Working together, the director and star began crafting what would ultimately become a script for an entire prequel movie that would center around the murderous woman that haunted the farm where “X” took place. Unlike that film, which took inspiration from movies like “Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” West felt like he wanted to go in a completely different direction for the prequel while taking inspiration from films such as “The Wizard of Oz” and he later called this project a “demented Disney movie.” Set in 1918, a young girl dreams of becoming a star while desperately seeking to escape the family farm where she grew up and she’ll do anything or kill anyone to get there… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to sharpen our pitchforks and pick up the pig off the front porch as we review the 2022 horror film “Pearl”…. 19 Jun 2021 | Episode 44 — The Burning | 01:15:58
The low-budget horror film has always been a staple of the movie industry but back in 1980, a producer named Harvey Weinstein was desperate to get his shot in Hollywood so he decided to try his hand at creating a scary movie after hearing stories about the Cropsey legend in upstate New York. He pitched the idea to his producing partner Michael Cohl, who knew this was a potential hit after the success of films such as “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” and “Halloween.” The initial pitch for the film took place prior to the success of “Friday the 13th,” although both movies share a somewhat similar premise involving a group of counselors getting hunted down at a kid’s campground. Once the film was greenlit based on a treatment, a screenplay was written in just six weeks by Peter Lawrence and Bob Weinstein before going into production. With the effects done by the legendary Tom Savini, a new slasher film was born. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to pick up our garden shears and run into an abandoned mineshaft as we talk about the 1981 film “The Burning”…

At one of the most polarizing times in the history of the United States where trust seems to be at an all time low, actor Dave Franco couldn’t help but face his own paranoia about the home-sharing phenomenon where companies like Air BNB connect people with places to rent with those who need somewhere to stay without much else known about each other besides a few online reviews. Who stayed there before and who might not have ever left? That led Franco to begin fleshing out an idea for his first feature film, which eventually become his directorial debut while taking a step back from acting on one of the lead roles for the movie. Set against the backdrop of a gorgeous beach location, two couples decide to spend a weekend together to unwind but as tensions rise and secrets are unearthed within the group, everybody involved starts to feel like they are being watched but by who exactly? 15 Feb 2021 | Episode 22 — Blood Quantum | 01:05:16
Thanks to TV series such as “The Walking Dead,” the zombie genre has really been rejuvenated in recent years with a number of truly creative takes in horror films made across the globe. In South Korea, “Train to Busan” was a pulse-pumping thrill ride that was equal parts terrifying and claustrophobic thanks to the inventive way zombies were used in that movie. In 2019, writer and director Jeff Barnaby decided to take his own unique stab at the zombie genre by introducing the dead coming back to live in the early 1980’s near the home of a First Nations people based in Canada. Barnaby, who grew up on a Mi’kmaq reserve, said the movie combined two passions of his — classic horror films and the trauma faced by Indigenous people. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to close the gates and check for bites as we talk about the 2019 film “Blood Quantum”…

25 Aug 2021 | Episode 52 — Wrong Turn (2021) | 01:16:12
Ever since Ned Beatty was told to “squeal like a pig” in “Deliverance,” tales of survival have been fodder for many writers and directors across the globe with films such as “The Hills Have Eyes” becoming horror classics. In 2003, a film called “Wrong Turn” was released from director Rob Schmidt with a story and script from Alan McElroy. The movie told the story about a group of teens in the wrong place at the wrong time after they encounter a group of backwoods cannibals. The first film was successful upon its release, which meant there were going to be plenty of sequels to follow. All told there were five more “Wrong Turn” movies released but they were mostly straight-to-video films with each subsequent installment seemingly getting worse and worse in terms of actual plot and execution. In 2018, rumors started swirling that a new “Wrong Turn” movie was being made but this time McElroy was returning to the franchise he started while penning the script for an entire reboot of the series. Director Mike P. Nelson signed onto helm the project and this time the group of teenagers in the wrong place at the wrong time ran afoul of an entire society of mountain people living off the grid. 15 Mar 2023 | Scream VI Review: Is This the Scariest Sequel in the Franchise? — Episode 133 | 01:31:08
After original “Scream” creator Kevin Williamson split with the franchise following the fourth film in the series, the team at Radio Silence — a group comprised of Chad Villella, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett — pitched an idea for a fifth sequel that ultimately went onto find great success while helping to reinvigorate the series that laid dormant for over 10 years. “Scream 5” had barely been in theaters for two weeks when a sequel was ordered with a release date already attached for March 2023. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, the same writers behind the fifth “Scream” film returned to pen the sixth movie, but dramatic changes had to be made after series star Neve Campbell couldn’t come to terms on a financial agreement to make her return. With Sidney Prescott no longer the focus, the attention shifted to the surviving characters from the fifth film, who were then relocated out of Woodsboro into the sprawling concrete jungle in New York City where a new and much more brutal Ghostface was awaiting them… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to observe the rules of a franchise and trust no one as we review the 2023 sequel “Scream 6”…. 08 Jan 2021 | Episode 17 — The Texas Chain Saw Massacre | 01:11:42
As part of a new series exploring different horror franchises, Rewind of the Living Dead will spend five episodes taking a deep dive into "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" as well as all of the sequels, remakes and reboots. The first episode will explore the original 1974 classic "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre." The word legendary gets tossed around a lot in the horror genre but Tobe Hooper’s first major film certainly fits the bill. Initially inspired by a Christmas shopping trip where he saw a rack of chainsaws as a method he could cut through a crowd of people, Hooper ended up writing a script for a movie he wanted to make called “Head Cheese” before then changing the name to “Leatherface,” based on one of the cannibals decorating his backwoods Texas tale about a group of travelers who end up at the wrong house where they are soon cut down and butchered one by one. Shot in 115 degree heat on a shoestring budget, Hooper initially wanted to make his movie PG rated so it could be seen by a wider audience. What actually resulted was one of the most terrifying horror films of all time with critics like Roger Ebert calling it as “violent and gruesome and blood-soaked as the title promises”. On the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to find out who will survive and what will be left of them as we discuss the 1974 film “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” … Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

12 Jun 2021 | Episode 43 — George Romero's Lost Film 'The Amusement Park' | 01:00:32
It’s difficult to remember the great George A. Romero as anything other than the father of the modern zombie movie and one of the best horror directors in the history of cinema. But after his breakout film “Night of the Living Dead” became a smash success, Romero found very little interest from audiences in his next two films. As he was preparing production on another feature length film that would become “The Crazies,” Romero was approached by the Lutheran Society about directing an informational movie that would deal with the subject of society’s terrible treatment of the elderly. Writer Walton Cook provided the script — one of the only times Romero wasn’t the author of his own films — and what he created was a 53-minute short film called “The Amusement Park.” The idea was that Romero’s finished product would serve as a public service announcement that would be shown in Lutheran community centers. Unfortunately, the Lutherans were so disturbed by Romero’s vision for the film that they shelved the project and ultimately the movie fell into obscurity for more than 40 years. Finally unearthed thanks to Romero’s wife, the film received a 4K restoration and now his so called “lost” film has been made available again. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to buy our tickets and hope to receive better treatment when we’re in our golden years as we review the “lost” George Romero movie “The Amusement Park”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

30 Mar 2021 | Episode 28 — Maniac | 01:07:20
The slasher movie is a staple of the horror genre with classic films such as “Halloween and “Friday the 13th” influencing audiences and filmmakers for decades to come. In 1980, director William Lustic alongside writer and star Joe Spinell unleashed a different kind of slasher film that was more brutal and intimate than almost anything that came before it. A lonely man named Frank Zito leaves his apartment at night and seeks out women, who he then captures and murders in horrific fashion. Rather than follow the victims until the killer finds them, this film follows the serial killer as he stalks his prey across New York City. The movie was unrated at the time of its release and famed critic Gene Siskel reportedly walked out of the theater after a particularly disturbing death scene. 13 Aug 2021 | Episode 51 — Friday the 13th IV: The Final Chapter | 01:30:53
The rise of slasher films in the 1980s has been well documented but months before Freddy Kreuger started haunting the dreams of the Elm Street children, Jason Voorhees was going on his fourth rampage through a group of teenage kids dumb enough to stay near Camp Crystal Lake. Following the release of “Friday the 13th Part III, which was rumored to be the final film in the series, Paramount decided to do one more movie to finally kill off Jason once and for all. The studio hired Joseph Zito, who was coming off his own slasher film called “The Prowler,” and he was asked to write and direct a fourth “Friday the 13th” movie. There was only one problem — Joseph Zito wasn’t a writer. But after the studio doubled his pay to serve as both writer and director, he accepted the job and then hired a ghost writer named Barney Cohen to actually write the script. Once completed, the film featured a major change from previous installments to the franchise because this time around there would be no “final girl” but rather multiple survivors of Jason’s deadly rampage. The film introduced Tommy Jarvis for the first time — a character who would later be considered Jason’s greatest foe — and Tom Savini returned to handle the effects after previously working on the first “Friday the 13th” film. The story is continuous from the conclusion of Part III to the beginning of Part IV as Jason once again wakes up and starts his killing spree all over again, except this time he runs into more formidable foes including the brother of one of his previous victims. On April 13, 1984, “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter” opened in theaters and it was intended to be the last of the series… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to shave our heads and grab a machete as we look back at the 1984 sequel “Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

30 Jun 2022 | Prom Night (1980) — Episode 95 | 01:16:52
The end of the 1970s and the start of the 1980s became primetime for slasher films after the success of “Halloween” in 1978. By that time, studios were all looking for the next hit that could be made for cheap and then produce millions at the box office. It was around this time that director Paul Lynch had a production meeting with Irwin Yablans, who initially came up with the idea for the original “Halloween” when he pitched a film about a group of babysitters who get stalked by a masked killer. Lynch had been attempting to come up with an idea for a horror film and it was Yablans who suggested building his movie around a holiday, which gave him the idea to craft a story surrounding a high school prom. Robert Guza Jr., who was a USC film student at the time, had his story adapted about a group of teenagers whose involvement in a tragic accident that comes back to haunt them. Lynch struggled to find financing for the film until he cast Jamie Lee Curtis in one of the lead roles with the movie taking just 24 days for filming. The end result was an iconic slasher about a killer coming for revenge after a child is killed when a group of kids are playing a dangerous game… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to put on our tuxes and take Randy Meeks’ advice as we review the 1980 classic “Prom Night”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

21 Dec 2022 | Silent Night, Deadly Night Holiday Special — Episode 121 | 01:20:39
There was a time when studios would actually accept screenplay ideas from the general public and that’s how producer Scott Schiend got his hands on a short story entitled “He Sees You When You’re Sleeping,” which was written by a Harvard student named Paul Caimi. The story centered around a killer Santa Claus and the concept was interesting enough that Schiend decided to develop it into a film. Under the working title “Slayride,” numerous directors were targeted to lead the film including Sam Raimi, Albert Magnoli and Ken Kwapis but the studio was interested in working with television producer Charles Seller Jr., who had famously worked on the “Life and Times of Grizzly Adams” film and TV series. Principle photography started in March 1983 in Utah with the movie centering around a traumatized young boy who witnesses a killer in a Santa costume murder his family and years later he decides to take up the same mantle to punish all those who misbehaved before Christmas… In our special holiday episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to find out if you’ve been naughty as we review the 1984 classic “Silent Night, Deadly Night." 25 Dec 2020 | Episode 15 Holiday Special - Gremlins | 01:04:09
In the 1980’s, the combination of horror and comedy was becoming more and more popular. Chris Columbus, who would go onto become a famed director in his own right, wrote a spec script after he was inspired by the sound of mice scurrying across his apartment but the story was really just an effort to get more attention on his work. That was until Steven Spielberg took notice of his script with interest of transforming this story into a feature film after calling it “one of the most original things” that he’d seen in years. Director Joe Dante was brought on board after he found success with his werewolf movie “The Howling” and he teamed up with Spielberg and Columbus to unleash “Gremlins” to audiences in the summer of 1984. 16 Mar 2022 | Rob Zombie's Halloween - Episode 79 | 01:39:03
A less than enthusiastic reaction to 2002’s “Halloween: Resurrection” left the famous horror franchise in limbo as producers tried to figure out the best way to go forward. Numerous scripts were produced that included Michael Myers facing off with the Cenobites from “Hellraiser,” another featuring the return of Jamie Lloyd and even one that would serve as a prequel of sorts to take place during the events of “Halloween III: Season of the Witch.” Ultimately, Dimension Films reached out to rock star turned director Rob Zombie to see if he would be interested in taking a stab at a new “Halloween” movie. As a lifelong fan of the franchise, Zombie jumped at the chance to make his own version of the film but only after original creator John Carpenter gave his blessing by saying “make it your own.” Zombie ended up writing the script that he would direct while essentially remaking the original film while adding plenty of his own unique touches. With so much control over the project, Zombie was able to cast the film his way including the addition of unknown actress Scout Taylor-Compton in the lead role as babysitter Laurie Strode, who has a terrible family secret that will soon come back to haunt her… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to put on our masks and get ready to face the boogeyman as we discuss Rob Zombie’s “Halloween”…

04 Jan 2023 | The New York Ripper Review (Special Lost Episode) — Episode 123 | 01:19:06
Italian horror have often been revered or considered revolting by audiences all over the world. Famed directors like Dario Argento have built rabid fanbases centered around the stylized way many directors from the European country color a canvas with blood. Lucio Fulci — who was nicknamed the “Godfather of Gore” — was one of the most beloved directors of Italian horror films with his work on movies such as” “Zombi 2” and “City of the Living Dead.” In 1982, Fulci released what would become one of his most controversial films — a movie set against the backdrop of New York City where a serial killer with a fetish for speaking like a duck is stalking and killing women in the most horrific ways possible. The movie was so graphic that it was banned in the United Kingdom after being called “simple the most damaging film” of all time. 22 Feb 2022 | Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022) — Episode 76 | 01:53:22
There’s never been a shortage of ideas when it came to making more sequels, reboots or remakes of Tobe Hooper’s 1974 classic “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre” but the latest incarnation didn’t start taking shape until 2018 when Legendary Pictures obtained the rights to the iconic horror franchise. Following the success of his “Evil Dead” remake along with the breakout hit “Don’t Breathe,” Fede Alvarez got interested in the project and signed on as a producer with newcomer Chris Thomas Devlin handling the script. Production started in Bulgaria in 2020 but the studio was unimpressed by the initial footage so director David Blue Garcia was hired to take over the project. Alvarez eventually revealed details surrounding the plot, which would serve as a direct sequel to the original film, with an older Leatherface being unleashed on a whole new group of people crazy enough to wake him from his murderous slumber…. 16 Jun 2022 | The Thing 40th Anniversary Special - Episode 93 | 01:22:42
When John Carpenter was first contacted about potentially directing a remake of the 1951 classic “The Thing from Another World,” he was reluctant to sign onto the project. The studio had already hired and fired “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” director Tobe Hooper and Carpenter didn’t really see a path to a creative remake from a film he admired so much. But it was his first chance to move from independent cinema to do a studio film so Carpenter eventually decided to take on the project while putting his own original spin on the concept where he wouldn’t try to hide the creature but rather explore the various incarnations of an alien who could assume the identity of any host it invaded. Rob Bottin was brought on board to handle the practical effects for the film, which ended up eating a huge part of the budget but it also helped create many of the most iconic moments in the movie. Set in a remote science station in Antarctica, a group of American scientists soon discover that they are not alone after an alien presence that can duplicate any one of them begins to systematically dismantle them one by one while proving that man really is the warmest place to hide… To celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the most iconic horror films in history, Rewind of the Living Dead will grab the flamethrowers and get ready to do a blood test as we look back on John Carpenter’s “The Thing”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

05 Oct 2021 | Halloween (1978) — Episode 57 | 01:31:21
Following the buzz around his first film “Assault on Precinct 13,” director John Carpenter was sought out by a pair of producers named Irwin Yablans and Moustapha Akkad to make a movie about a psychotic killer who stalked babysitters. Carpenter agreed to do the project so long as he had complete creative control over the film. He then got to work on the script with his girlfriend Debra Hill with the original title of the film as “The Babysitter Murders.” The script reportedly took only a couple of weeks to complete with Carpenter and Hill working in tandem on the story and the dialogue. Once finished, it was the producers who mentioned the possibility of releasing the film around Halloween and with that suggested the title of the movie should change as well. Shot on a shoestring budget of just $300,000, Carpenter’s unique approach to several different shots including the iconic point-of-view from the killer have been praised by other directors for more than 40 years. Carpenter also managed to compose the entire score himself, which included arguably the most iconic horror theme of all time. The film absolutely terrified audiences as a faceless psychopath named Michael Myers stalked his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois and killed any and every babysitter that stood in his path… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to put on our William Shatner masks and sharpen up our kitchen knives as we discuss the iconic 1978 film “Halloween”… Follow the hosts: Damon Martin @DamonMartin Patrick Guera @DirectorPatrick Email us questions at: ROTLivingDead@gmail.com Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

03 Dec 2020 | Episode 12 — Satan's Slaves | 00:56:08
One of the best parts about the horror genre is that it transcends people, places and cultures. Americans are just as likely to be terrified by a really scary movie as people living across Europe or Asia. In fact some of the best horror films in history didn’t come from the United States. From the classic “Nosferatu” in Germany from 1922 to Dario Argento’s “Suspiria” from Italy in 1977 to “Audition” from Japan in 1999 to “Let the Right One In” out of Sweden in 2008, horror films are made and enjoyed by a global audience. In 2017, Indonesian writer and director Joko Anwar penned a script for “Pengabdi Setan” that was ultimately a loose prequel to a 1980 film of the same name. Set in 1981, the film follows a family haunted by the death of their matriarch, who was once a famous musician but now laid on her deathbed just wilting away from a strange illness. When she passes, her children begin being haunted by ghastly visions all around their home. In the latest installment of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to travel to the outskirts of Jakarta and cover up mother’s portrait so we can get some sleep as we discuss the 2017 film “Satan’s Slaves”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

10 Jan 2022 | Scream (1996) — Episode 70 | 01:59:52
By the mid 90s, the horror film industry was on life support without much interest from studios to invest in high profile projects. That all changed after executives started hearing about a script from writer Kevin Williamson called ‘Scary Movie.’ Written over three days while he was holed up at a friend’s home in Palm Springs, Williamson took inspiration from films such as ‘Psycho’ when setting up his opening scene and from there he managed to blend together a perfect mix of horror and comedy that had just about everybody in Hollywood lining up to make his movie. Once Dimension stepped on board as the studio, the call went out for directors and everybody from Quentin Tarantino to Robert Rodriguez was pitched the idea but ultimately it was iconic horror director Wes Craven who decided to take on the project despite his initial plans to distance himself from the genre following the poor reception of his last movie, “Vampire in Brooklyn.” Armed with a cast of relatively unknown teens, a ‘Friends’ cast member and one bona fide movie star who wouldn’t stay alive past the opening scene, Craven started to put together a movie that was eventually praised as one of the greatest and most important horror films of all time and arguably a savior to the genre. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to answer the phone and refuse to run up the stairs as we look back at the 1996 classic “Scream”…

01 Feb 2023 | Infinity Pool Review — Episode 127 | 01:09:19
Writer and director Brandon Cronenberg has developed a style of his own that seamlessly blends elements of horror and science fiction as evidenced in past films such as “Possessor” and “Antiviral.” He was working on a story revolving around human clones and using them to stand in for executions when he remembered a particularly off putting vacation that led him to an entirely new idea. Cronenberg had traveled to an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic where the visitors were bussed in at night, the entire area was surrounded by razor-wire and the whole experience felt completely artificial. When the bus left to take the tourists back to the airport, Cronenberg couldn’t help but notice the extreme poverty that surrounded the posh resort where the wealthy lived like kings while the people who actually resided in the country were nearly destitute. That eventually became the script for Cronenberg’s twisted vision about an author who visits a similar all-inclusive resort but after getting arrested, he soon realizes that money really can absolve you of anything — even a murder… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to put on our dog collars and watch a clone get executed as we review the 2023 film “Infinity Pool”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

13 Jul 2022 | The Black Phone - Episode 97 | 01:12:57
Back in 2004, Joe Hill was a struggling novelist who just couldn’t seem to get one his books purchased by a publisher. Despite being horror icon Stephen King’s son, Hill was determined to strike out on his own, which is why he changed to a different last name from his father. Rather than write another novel, Hill decided to develop a group of short stories into a single collection with one of the stories centered around a little boy who gets kidnapped and he escapes thanks to help from a supernatural phone that connects him with the killer’s past victims who desperately want him to survive. Years later, director Scott Derrickson and writer C. Robert Cargill got interested in adapting the story into a feature film, which required them to build out the story a little further from Hill’s original work. What resulted was a terrifying vision about a maniac called The Grabber, who kidnaps and murders children in Denver in the 1970s and one boy along with his sister who will do anything to survive him… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to load up our phone with dirt and stay way from the van with black balloons as we review the 2022 horror film “The Black Phone”…

27 Oct 2021 | Pumpkinhead — Episode 60 | 01:16:26
Originally inspired by a creepy poem by Ed Justin that also served as the basis for the Misfits song of the same name, the DeLaurentis Entertainment Group began development for a film about a vengeful spirit conjured to exact justice for those who have been wronged. The studio eventually brought the project to famed creature creator Stan Winston — best known for his work in films such as ‘The Terminator’ as well as ‘Aliens’ and ‘Terminator 2,’ which earned him several Academy Awards — in order to develop the right look for the monster in the movie. Winston was immediately hooked by the story and decided to use this particular vehicle for his directorial debut. While he was working on the story with another writer, Winston actually allowed his team to help craft the look for the creature and one of his employees actually ended up wearing the suit in the movie. The end result was a story about a grief stricken father calling on a local witch to conjure a creature to seek vengeance on a group of teenagers who accidentally killed his son. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to head up to Razorback Hollow and dig up some bones as we look back on the 1988 cult classic horror film “Pumpkinhead”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

14 Sep 2022 | Barbarian Review: Is This The Scariest Movie of 2022? - Episode 106 | 01:27:07
The relationship between horror and comedy has really exploded over the last few years, especially with filmmakers like David Gordon-Green and Danny McBride developing a new “Halloween” trilogy and former sketch comedy guru Jordan Peele winning an Oscar and becoming one of the most popular directors in modern horror history. The latest convert is Zach Cregger, who first came to fame through his own sketch comedy series called “The Whitest Kids You Know.” It wasn’t until he read a book called “The Gift of Fear” that he got inspired to write a scene based on the subject matter dealing with little red flags women are encouraged to recognize when it comes to the toxic behavior of the men around them. That single scene eventually spiraled into an entire idea for a film where a woman arrives at a house she rented only to find it’s already been occupied by someone else… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to double check our Air BNB reservations and make a cup of tea as we review the 2022 horror film “Barbarian”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

14 Sep 2021 | Episode 55 — Malignant | 01:24:32
In the era of modern horror films, few directors are as revered as James Wan after he terrified audiences with films such as “Saw” and “Insidious” and eventually creating a massive franchise based around “The Conjuring.” Of course, Wan’s talent eventually landed him blockbuster movie credentials after he directed the first “Aquaman” movie but as he was preparing to shoot the sequel, he decided he wanted to return to his horror roots and create an entirely different kind of film. Inspired by the Giallo movies in Italian cinema along with Dario Argento and Brian DePalma, Wan had a desire to pay homage to the films from the late 1980s and early 1990s that were such a huge part of his experience growing up where he would scavenge the very back wall of the horror section and look for the most interesting VHS cover available. What resulted was a movie about a woman haunted by visions of a vicious killer, who is drawing nearer and nearer to her with every dead body that surfaces. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to check for bleeding on the back our heads and look for clues to solve a murder as we review the 2021 horror film “Malignant”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

21 Dec 2020 | Episode 14 — 30 Miles from Nowhere | 00:59:20
There are a lot of incredible female-led horror films throughout history but a new movie released in 2018 not only featured a female director in Caitlin Koller but the screenplay came from an actress and writer named Shawna Kofed. Described as “a scary version of the Big Chill,” old college friends gather at a remote cabin in Wisconsin to attend the funeral of a former classmate who committed suicide. They haven’t seen each other for years so it doesn’t take long for the skeletons to start getting pulled out of the closet as past tensions both angry and sexual began simmering back to the surface. Of course as they mourn their friend, the group begins experiencing strange phenomenon like blood flowing from the pipes, a strange noise coming from the crawl space and a cockroach infestation. In the latest episode of “Rewind of the Living Dead,” we’re going to crack open a bottle of tequila, order in some pork buns and talk about the 2018 film “30 Miles from Nowhere”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

28 Dec 2022 | Best of 2022 and Top 5 Horror Films of the Year — Episode 122 | 02:10:11
Following a global pandemic, movie theaters were still struggling to pack in audiences but two genres — along with Tom Cruise flying a jet — proved resilient in the face of falling box office numbers — superhero movies and horror films. Week after week, critics were stunned at the staggering returns on horror films at the box office including a feature called “Smile” that wasn’t even supposed to earn a theatrical release yet it went onto gross more than $216 million worldwide to make it the highest earning horror film of the year. 2022 was also the year that Jordan Peele searched for aliens, Mia Goth introduced us to Maxine and then eventually to Pearl, Art the Clown sent audience members screaming from their seats, Ralph Fiennes served up a deliciously wicked four course meal, Ghostface returned and Amber Midthunder reminded us all how fight off a Predator. All in all, it was a great year to be a horror fan. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we present our special year end extravaganza as we reveal our top horror films and best horror moments for 2022… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

01 May 2021 | Episode 33 — Chopping Mall | 01:03:55
It’s a well known fact that the 1980’s was arguably the most prolific and profitable time for horror films — sometimes for better, other times for worse. Julie Corman, wife of legendary horror producer Roger Corman, had a deal with Vestron video for a horror film that would take place in a shopping mall, which was the center of American consumerism in the 80s. She hired Jim Wynorski to pen the script and he only agreed to the project so long as he got to direct. He ended up writing a script after he was inspired by the 1954 film “Gog,” although many believe the film is much closer to the made-for-TV film “Trapped,” which starred James Brolin. The premise of the movie was rather simple — a group of employees get trapped in a mall after hours with a group of malfunctioning robots meant to serve and protect but instead they turn murderous. Shot at the Sherman Oaks Galleria, which is the same mall that appears in films such as “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Commando” and “Terminator 2,” the movie titled “Killbots” was released into theaters in 1986 but didn’t fare very well at the box office until a new name was finally suggested. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to buy some beer, get locked in a furniture store and talk about the 1986 classic “Chopping Mall”…

05 Apr 2023 | Last Shift Review (Episode 1 in 2 Part Special) — Episode 136 | 01:21:56
After cutting his teeth under legendary horror writer Clive Barker, Anthony DeBlasi struck out on his own looking to become a director while developing his own style behind the camera. DeBlasi eventually made his directorial debut with the film “Dread,” which was based on a short story of the same name by Barker. It wasn’t until a few years later that DeBlasi came up with an idea about a self-contained horror film centered around a police dispatcher in a small town, who was all alone and trapped in the station. From there, DeBlasi and co-writer Scott Polley fleshed out the story that would eventually become a feature film with shooting taking place in Florida. The film centers around a rookie police officer ordered to watch over a station that’s about to close permanently and it doesn’t take her long to understand why no one wanted to be alone in this building. In the first episode of a two-part special, Rewind of the Living Dead will lock the doors and keep the phone lines open as we look back at the 2014 film “Last Shift”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

13 Apr 2022 | Near Dark - Episode 83 | 01:16:48
As she prepared to direct her first solo feature, future Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow wanted to film a Western movie but she found it difficult to secure financing and a studio to back up her vision. So alongside co-writer Eric Red, who also penned the horror film “The Hitcher,” Bigelow shifted gears to combine her idea for a modern Western with the vampire genre that had become increasingly popular in recent years, especially after the success of “Fright Night” as well as another film called “The Lost Boys” that was set for release that same year. Bigelow didn’t want to make the same kind of movie as traditional vampire stories steeped in gothic or even romantic themes. Instead, her interpretation was much darker and grimier than most vampire stories — in fact she never even uses the word vampire in her film. Set against the dusty backdrop of the southwest, a young cowboy named Caleb falls for a beautiful girl named Mae but he soon discovers that one kiss from her comes along with a deadly invitation to join her family… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to black out the car windows and crank up the Tangerine Dream as we discuss the 1987 classic “Near Dark”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

05 Oct 2022 | Smile Review: Is This a New Contender for Best Horror Movie of 2022? — Episode 109 | 01:27:53
Raised in a small town near Akron, Ohio, Parker Finn grew up as a huge fan of film but particularly when it came to horror movies. Often intrigued by the covers of VHS tapes at the video store, Finn admittedly watched films that he probably had no business seeing at a young age. Being traumatized by movies like Poltergeist and The Shining set Finn on a path where he was determined to eventually scare people with films of his own. That led him to make his critically acclaimed 2020 short film titled Laura Hasn’t Slept about a woman who seeks help from her therapist after she’s tormented by recurring nightmares. While Finn was never a fan of short films that dovetail into a larger feature, he couldn’t help but decide to pull at a thread that eventually led him to his first full-length movie. When a therapist witnesses a patient carry out a disturbing act of violence, she’s suddenly haunted by the same type of visions that could eventually spell her doom and she’s running out of time to stave off a gruesome death of her own… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we keep a close eye on anyone grinning at us as we review the 2022 horror film Smile… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

12 May 2022 | The Night House — Episode 87 | 01:14:57
Writing partners Ben Collins and Luke Piotrowski had already managed to get several scripts made into films but there was plenty more left on the cutting room floor from projects that never got picked up or pieces of stories that were deemed too ambitious that the pair called their “murdered darlings.” Armed with those ideas along with an intense desire to write something that would scare each other, Collins and Piotrowski started to develop an idea for a new script that would deal with a subject that was truly terrifying — the intense reality of mortality. Despite never having suffered through any intense grief in their own lives yet knowing that death is looming around the corner for all of us and the ones we love, they decided to explore that as a setting for a film. The final story centered around a woman named Beth who is trying to make sense of her husband’s shocking suicide and the trove of secrets he was keeping from her that she begins to uncover in the wake of his death. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to crank up the stereo to listen to ‘The Calvary Cross’ and make sure the boat is tied to the dock as we review the 2021 thriller ‘The Night House’… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

01 Nov 2021 | Last Night in Soho — Episode 61 | 01:15:33
It was over a decade ago when director Edgar Wright was gifted a book called “Hammer Glamour: Classic Images from the Archive of Hammer Films” that showcased iconic women from the studio’s vast history except this wasn’t just some glossy coffee table book. Instead, Wright was struck by the sheer number of those women whose careers were cut short or lives that ended tragically. Combined with his own history for a certain neighborhood in North London and Wright started to get an idea for a story that would document the hardships about a young ingenue who discovers the underbelly of the entertainment industry when she’s trying to make it big. Wright eventually found the actress he wanted to star in the film after he watched Anya-Taylor Joy in her breakout role in Robert Eggers’ “The Witch,” but plans to shoot the movie were soon complicated by a number of outside factors and other projects. When Wright finally decided to revisit the project, he changed the role that Joy would play while also casting Thomasin McKenzie, who just found success in her breakout role in “Jojo Rabbit.” The movie follows an ambitious young girl moving to London for the first time as she seeks to become a fashion designer but dreams about a 1960s starlet attempting to make it big soon turn to nightmares that don’t go away when she opens her eyes. 12 Apr 2023 | Malum Review (Episode 2 in 2 Part Special) — Episode 137 | 01:53:45
Working on a tiny budget didn’t allow director Anthony DiBlasi and co-writer Scott Polley to do everything they wanted when making the 2014 film “Last Shift” but they never imagined that there would be a return to that same world less than 10 years later. A new production company called Welcome Villain launched with producer Luke LeBeau pitching the duo on the idea of revisiting “Last Shift” — this time with a bigger budget, which would allow them to tell a bigger story. DiBlasi debated if he wanted to make an extension of the first film or just reimagine the movie under slightly different circumstances while also keeping everything in the movie rather than some parts that were purposefully left on cutting room floor due to budget restraints. DiBlasi settled on the latter, especially with the chance to remake the film with audiences also finally being able to see his movie in theaters. The setup was nearly the same as the original except this time the rookie police officer babysitting a decommissioned police station actually chose her assignment because she desperately wants to know more about her family’s history and the ties her father had to a demon worshipping cult that allegedly died alongside him one year earlier yet seems eerily still very much alive. 27 Jun 2021 | Episode 45 — Frailty | 01:01:11
Growing up in Texas with a religious upbringing that usually involved reading the Book of Revelations and the Old Testament in the bible, writer Brent Hanley was inspired to write a movie based on some of those same kind of themes. A huge fan of Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King as well, Hanley crafted a story about a single father with two sons, who is visited by an angel one day and he’s informed that he’s been tasked by God to become a demon slayer. While one of the boys is more than happy to join this idyllic crusade, the other is horrified at his father’s actions to snuff out people he’s supposedly been told are evil doers. With a running narrative by Matthew McConaughey with Bill Paxton as a first time director, the film went onto be called an “underrated gem” while earning high marks from reviewers. 31 Aug 2021 | Episode 53 — Candyman (2021) | 01:21:26
Originally based upon a Clive Barker short story called “The Forbidden,” director Bernard Rose optioned the tale for a film called “Candyman” that was first released in 1992. The movie did solid enough business at the box office to deliver two forgettable sequels but more importantly was the chord it struck within audiences to turn the movie into a bona fide cult classic. Talks of a sequel or a remake were rumored for years but then in 2018, Academy Award winner Jordan Peele entered talks to create a “Candyman” sequel through his Monkeypaw Productions company. Eventually, Peele brought on Nia DaCosta — a rising star director who had received critical acclaim or her film “Little Woods” — and together they crafted a new world surrounding the haunted character called Candyman who inhabited a Chicago neighborhood called Cabrini-Green. Rather than do a remake, Peele and DaCosta decided to create a sequel to the 1992 original film but this time focusing on the newly gentrified Cabrini-Green and the vengeful spirit who was gone but never quite forgotten. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to chant into the mirror five times and summon a spirit as we review the 2021 film “Candyman” Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

11 Jan 2023 | M3GAN Review Plus Reacting to 'Evil Dead Rise' Trailer — Episode 124 | 01:30:09
Prolific writer and director James Wan has plenty of experience with terrifying dolls because you have to look no further than his signature series “The Conjuring” to find Annabelle staring back at you. But Wan wasn’t looking for another haunted doll when he came up with the idea for a premise centered around “embracing technology too much” and “what happens when technology runs amok.” That was the spark of an idea that was handed over to screenwriter Akela Cooper, who had previously worked with Wan on the 2021 film “Malignant” as well as the well regarded horror film “Hell Fest.” What Cooper ultimately crafted was a horrific science fiction film with plenty of black comedy centered around a scientist who creates a childlike android as the next innovation in artificial intelligence except this time aimed at befriending kids. Unfortunately her creation soon becomes a cautionary tale in technology gone wrong… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to bow down to our robot overlords as we review the 2022 horror film “M3gan”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

13 May 2022 | Friday the 13th Part 2 — Episode 88 | 01:27:38
The wild success of the first Friday the 13th movie had Paramount Pictures frothing at the mouth for a sequel but the initial idea was to essentially treat the franchise as an anthology where each movie would involve an entirely new scary story. Some of the producers on the original film had a much different idea that the sequel should involve Jason Voorhees even though his appearance in the original film was essentially done in a nightmare sequence that was never expected to go any further than that movie. Steve Miner, who was an associate producer on the original film ran with that idea and he signed onto direct the next movie after Sean Cunningham opted not to return to the franchise he helped start. Miner came up with an idea that would carry the story five years into the future after the events in the original film as a new group of camp counselors are arriving to train for the summer ahead but they are completely unaware of the danger lurking in the woods…. 05 Jun 2021 | Episode 42 — The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It | 01:12:22
In 1981, 19-year-old Arne Cheyenne Johnson was arrested and charged with the murder of his landlord after stabbing the man numerous times with a five-inch blade from his pocket knife. A media circus soon followed the sensational murder thanks to the attention brought on the case by famed demonoligists Ed and Lorraine Warren after they reportedly conducted an exorcism on a young boy that resulted in the spirit inhabiting the child then transferring to Arne. In court, Arne attempted to claim he was not guilty by reason of demonic possession. It was the first time a person had made that claim in the history of the American court system. While Johnson was eventually found guilty of manslaughter before spending five years in prison, the story fascinated people from around the world and books as well as films were produced about the terrifying incident. Over 30 years later, the highly publicized trial and the involvement by the Warrens served as the basis for the latest film in the growing “Conjuring” universe. While series architect James Wan was unable to direct, he passed those duties onto his hand chosen successor in Michael Chaves, the same many who had directed the “Conjuring” spinoff film “The Curse of La Llorona.” Filming took place in 2019 but due to the global pandemic the movie wasn’t actually released until 2021. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to search for totems and tell the judges that we’re both possessed as we review the new film “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.”…. 22 Feb 2021 | Episode 23 — The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning | 01:29:42
More than 25 years after Tobe Hooper created one of the most iconic horror films of all time with “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” action movie producer Michael Bay saw an opportunity to capitalize on the property after starting his own studio called Platinum Dunes that was created specifically with low budget films in mind. Eventually, Bay’s company purchased the rights to the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and the work began on reviving the franchise. Rumors abounded that Tobe Hooper would be involved with the project but ultimately a new director — Marcus Nispel and a first time screenwriter named Scott Kosar were brought on board to create an entirely new version of the film. The Sawyer family was gone. Replaced by the Hewitt’s and many of the characters changed as well but one thing stayed the same — Leatherface was back. The remake was finally released in 2003 and after a small $9.5 million budget, the film raked in more than $100 million at the box office. Three years later, Platinum Dunes returned with “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning,” which was a prequel to the remake film from 2003. A new director and writer were brought on board with several returning cast members from the Hewitt family including R. Lee Ermey and Andrew Bryniarski as Thomas Hewitt aka Leatherface. Despite a bigger budget, the film failed to find the same kind of success as the remake, although the movie was still profitable. Unfortunately, critics didn’t find much to enjoy about the prequel and plans for a third film in the franchise were scrapped. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead as part of our special “Texas Chainsaw” franchise series, we’re going to look back at “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” remake from 2003 and the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning” from 2006… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

30 Nov 2022 | Bones and All Review — Episode 118 | 01:12:08
Writer David Kajganich had worked on several horror screenplays throughout his career including the critically acclaimed 2018 remake of “Suspiria” but even he was surprised when he was approached about adapting Camile DeAngelis’ book about a pair of lovestruck teenagers who both happen to be afflicted with the same instinct to consume human flesh while in the midst of a coming of age story. It was unlike anything he’d ever been asked to write before but after talking to the author, Kajganich was sold on the idea. It wasn’t long before he spoke to previous collaborator Luca Guadagnino about serving as a director on the project but for a time it appeared no deal would be struck and he’d have to find someone else to lead the film. Eventually, Kajganich circled back around and asked Guadagnino to just read his script and afterwards the director agreed to the job on one condition — he wanted Timothee Chalamet for one of the lead roles after they previously worked together on the film “Call Me By Your Name.” Chalamet signed on along with Taylor Russell as well as Oscar winner Mark Rylance in what can ultimately be described as a cross-country cannibal love story…. 18 Jan 2023 | 'Sick' Review: 'Scream' Writer Kevin Williamson Returns with a New Slasher Film — Episode 125 | 01:30:08
Kevin Williamson — best known as the screenwriter behind the original “Scream” as well as films such as “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and “The Faculty” — was looking for a setting for a new slasher movie but he wasn’t sure if tackling a subject as serious as the COVID-19 global pandemic was something he should explore. Previous attempts to set films during the pandemic had largely failed but he was inspired by other genre filmmakers like Jordan Peele, who have used movies to tackle hard-hitting issues while still making a truly compelling story. Williamson timed his story for April 2020, which was just after the global pandemic really took hold and he kept his film small yet continued to look for ways to ratchet up the tension at every turn. The plot centered around a pair of college friends who decide to quarantine at a family lake house far away from the city but they soon discover that being isolated doesn’t mean they are actually alone after a masked killer begins stalking them. 10 Nov 2020 | Episode 008 — Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark | 00:50:34
In 1981, former journalist turned author Alvin Schwartz released a book that would ultimately define his writing career with a series of short stories cobbled together for a collection known as “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark.” With nightmarish imagery provided by artist Stephen Gammell, the book was marketed for younger readers much to the chagrin of some of their parents, who complained about the graphic nature of the macabre stories that often featured gruesome deaths. In fact, “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark” was the most frequently challenged book for library inclusion during the 1990’s. Sadly, Schwartz died in 1992 but his work lived on with a film released in 2019 by the same name that featured many of his most iconic stories and characters. The movie much like the books targeted a younger audience but plenty of adults were anxious to see the frightening stories they read as children come to life on the big screen. 05 Jul 2022 | Stranger Things Season 4, Volume 2 — Episode 96 | 01:21:19
A supersized group of episodes of “Stranger Things” combined with delays in production due to the pandemic led to season 4 being split into two separate parts with the first seven episodes dropping in May and then the final two debuting in July. Despite only two episodes remaining in the season, “Stranger Things” packed a lot into these episodes with a nearly four-hour run time that helped reach a conclusion leading into the fifth and final season of the show. When we left at the end of episode 7, Vecna’s true identity had been revealed along with his connection to Eleven while Nancy got locked in a nightmare vision after paying a visit to the Upside Down looking for answers to the terror that has been haunting Hawkins, Indiana for years. 31 Aug 2022 | Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors Review - Episode 104 | 01:37:04
Due to the critical failure surrounding “Nightmare on Elm Street 2,” New Line Cinema was hesitant to green light a third film in the franchise but when original creator Wes Craven decided to come back on board to help write the script, the studio decided to move forward with the project. Craven’s idea centered around a third and final film that would conclude the series, especially considering he didn’t initially plan on making any movies past the first one. His original script actually involved Freddy Krueger crossing over to the real world and tormenting the actors making a “Nightmare on Elm Street” sequel. The studio shot that down, although Craven eventually got his wish to make that film a few years later. Craven eventually teamed with writer Bruce Wagner to come up with the concept for the film, which initially started out as a much darker take on Freddy and the teens he was going after in their dreams. Ultimately, the studio opted to go in a different direction with more outrageous dream sequences mixed in with some seriously dark humor. What resulted was a story about a group of kids locked away in a psych ward after each of them dealt with horrendous night terrors but it turns out they were all being haunted by the same man in their dreams… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to crank up the Dokken and load up on hypnocil as we discuss “Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

28 Apr 2022 | Master — Episode 85 | 01:17:13
When writer and director Miriama Diallo attended Yale University, she referred to the person in charge of her residential college as ‘master’ — an incredibly outdated term that the school tried to explain away as nothing more than a way to pay homage to a British system on which it was based while stating it had nothing to do with the ugly history of slavery in America. Diallo just went along with the university’s rules but a few years after she graduated, she happened to run into the former head of her college and instinctively she called him ‘master.’ That’s when she realized the way she had been conditioned to just accept use of such a problematic title. It forced Diallo to really examine her history and how those experiences can truly shape a person but it also inspired her to write a screenplay loosely based upon some of her own experiences at college. The finished product centered around three women of color at an upscale university called Ancaster where all of them face the specter of institutional racism, not to mention microaggressions and a haunted history at this school with a legacy of intolerance… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to wait for the clock to strike 3:33 as we review the 2022 film “Master”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

29 May 2021 | Episode 40 — A Quiet Place Part II | 01:06:56
Following the massive, worldwide success of “A Quiet Place” in 2018 — a film that grossed over $340 million at the global box office — Paramount immediately began looking into a possible sequel. The only problem was original star, director and co-writer John Krasinski wasn’t interested in creating a franchise but rather a one-off film, which he already made. The original screenwriters also bowed out of the project, opting to focus on creating new material rather than mining a sequel out of the first film. Eventually, Krasinski started brainstorming ideas for a possible sequel focused around a very simple concept — he wanted to make Millicent Simmons the hero of a second film. By August 2018, Krasinski was already hammering out a script and he finished his first draft for the movie in only three and a half weeks. A few months later, he was officially hired on to return as the director and the rest of the cast from the first film also agreed to return including his wife, Emily Blunt, who would take over the lead role responsibilities in the sequel. The film centered around the Abbott family leaving their home after family patriarch Lee was killed during the events in the first movie. What would they find in the outside world ravaged by these sound-seeking creatures? That’s what Krasinski aimed to find out. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to grab our amplifiers and make sure we have plenty of oxygen as we review “A Quiet Place Part II”…

06 May 2021 | Episode 34 — The Wretched | 01:26:07
The Pierce brothers — Drew and Brett — were essentially born to do horror movies considering their father Bart was a photographic FX artist on the original “Evil Dead” movie by Sam Raimi. Following their first film “Deadheads” that came out back in 2011, the siblings decided to take a stab at a different genre in the horror field by focusing on witches. Inspired by the idea to build a different interpretation and mythology around witches, the Pierce brothers wanted to apply a dynamic to a supernatural creature that would only exist within a certain set of rules like Freddy Krueger in nightmares or Dracula stalking the night. The result was “The Wretched” — a film about a boy named Ben who goes to live with his father for the summer as his parents are stuck in the middle of an ugly divorce and he starts to notice that something is not quite right with his neighbor. When children start disappearing and nobody seems the wiser, Ben tries to take matters into his own hands. 12 Oct 2021 | Halloween (2018) — Episode 58 | 01:23:57
The “Halloween” franchise has been one of the most active in horror history with very little time passing between sequels and remakes ever since the original film was released in 1978. After Rob Zombie found success with his version of “Halloween” in 2007 and a subsequent sequel in 2009, a third film was ordered but the rock star turned director didn’t want to return for another film. There was talk about a movie called “Halloween 3D” that would have kept the same characters from Zombie’s films but that plan was eventually scrapped. Then another sequel was plotted called “Halloween Returns” that would have direct ties to the events that took place in both “Halloween” and “Halloween II” but a poor script delayed production so long that the rights to the franchise reverted back to Miramax from Dimension Films. That’s when uber horror producer Jason Blum got involved and pitched an idea for a co-production that would revive the entire “Halloween” franchise. David Gordon Green and Danny McBride eventually joined the production with an idea for a story that would essentially eliminate all of the previous “Halloween” sequels except for the original 1978 film. After receiving a blessing from John Carpenter for their idea, Green and McBride moved forward with the project that also saw Jamie Lee Curtis return to reprise her role as the original final girl, Laurie Strode. In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re doing to record a serial killer podcast and turn on the gas in our basement prison as we look back on the 2018 sequel to “Halloween”…. 17 Feb 2022 | Attack the Block - Episode 75 | 01:26:07
After he got car-jacked near his home in South London, future writer and director Joe Cornish started to wonder what would have happened if a meteor fell from the sky and came crashing down to the ground at the same time he was being robbed. How would that change the dynamic of that situation? Cornish believed that he would probably turn to his tormentors to ask them to have his back in such an unpredictable and potentially dangerous moment. That spawned an idea for Cornish, who had grown up admiring directors who had wildly creative ambitions but not the budgets to match, yet they somehow made it work. Like Steven Spielberg with “Duel” or James Cameron with “The Terminator.” He decided to create a 10 page treatment set in the world of science fiction and fantasy but rather than just write the script, he actually visited several youth clubs all around London to interview kids to find out how they would react to these different and sometimes bizarre situations. Armed with dozens of interviews, Cornish started to put together his story about a gang of street-wise kids who end up at the center of an alien invasion in their own neighborhood… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to grab our weapons and head up to Ron’s weed room as we discuss the 2011 film “Attack the Block”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio

23 Nov 2022 | The Menu Review - Episode 117 | 01:26:01
Writer Will Tracy, who counts shows like “Last Week Tonight” and “Succession” among his credits on IMDB, was on his honeymoon in Norway when he started exploring the best options for dinner as a certified foodie. What he discovered was a private dining location on an island where a boat was required to pick you up and drop you off for a five-hour experience where the chef and staff prepared an elaborate meal for an exclusive set of clientele. That was all the inspiration Tracy needed to return to New York and seek out his friend Seth Reiss to explore transforming this idea into an actual film that dissected the elite world of overpriced gourmet food. During the writing process, Tracy and Reiss actually started imagining Ralph Fiennes in the lead role as the eccentric chef that sits at the center of their dark-horror comedy but the pair were even more stunned when the actor actually agreed to do the part. The finished product centers around a group of 1-percenters who pay to have the ultimate eating experience on a private island with a world class chef but they soon find out that what they’re being fed is far more bitter than any dish that’s being served… In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to clear our palettes and try to figure out the theme for the evening as we review the 2022 film “The Menu”… Music courtesy of Andrew Scott Bell and Karl Casey @ White Bat Audio
