No new show this week, due to some scheduling conflicts (and that we're talking about 4+ games for our next show), we've had to push off the Double Dragon show to next Tuesday.  However, we did want to take time to personally thank everyone for listening as we hit our 300 subscriber mark on YouTube!

For our first attempt at this, we took a look at the 1992 SNES classic, Axelay. As this was our first show, there are some minor audio issues, but rest assured we are working the kinks out and the next show should sound a lot better.

It's our 10th episode spectacular, and this week we have chosen to slip slightly out of our own guidelines to cover not a true classic game, but a modern game that should appeal to any classic NES fan, Super Mario Maker for the Wii U!   It's got all the classic 2D Mario action that you could ever want or imagine, and as such we get to talk about staples of a series we have been playing for 30 years. Also this week, Jeremy G has an electronic doomsday of sorts, and that leads him down a path that thankfully leads to the Rare Replay collection for the Xbox One!

It's the start of our first Halloween, and so we focus our eyes on a spoooooooky Genesis classic, Haunting starring Polterguy, the only game I'm aware of where you can possess a couch. We also have our regular (terrifying!) updates on what we're all playing, and this week's (bloodcurdling?) listener question : "What system did you never have (when it was current) that you really wanted and didn't get?" Next week, prepare yourselves for a future Halloween classic episode, where we take on all things Splatterhouse!

It's the second part of our Halloween extravaganza, and this week we look at not one... but THREE classic video games.  First up, we revisit the Turbografx-16 and the original Splatterhouse, in which Rick and Jennifer make the mistake of getting out of the rain at an abandoned mansion.  Then we switch to the Sega Genesis for Splatterhouse 2, where Rick returns to save Jennifer (again) with the help of the demon mask.  Finally, we dig up the bones of Splatterhouse 3, in which the series tries to do some new things, and the results are less than stellar. Our listener question for this week is two-fold : What game gave you your first real jump-scare?  What game has scared you the most ever?  Shockingly, Billy and Jeremy P didn't say General Chaos. This week, we take a look at the NES 1990 classic, Little Nemo the Dream Master.  This might be the only game where you feed candy to a bee, but we made no research to back that claim up. We also answer a listener question about regrettable game sales.  Billy uses this time to get teary-eyed about an MC Hammer game.

It's almost Thanksgiving, and at Retrovaniacs, we didn't want you to think we'd miss out on this opportunity to... ok, this game has nothing to do with Thanksgiving.  It's Blast Corps, the first RARE created game for the Nintendo 64, and it's this week's amazing choice for our look back through the annals of gaming. In honor of Thanksgiving (and the start of the Christmas season), we tell some Black Friday stories and generally feel smug that thanks to the internet, we can all sit in our house on Black Friday eating stuffing and cranberry sandwiches while we buy gifts for relatives we rarely enjoy spending time with.

 Here's a game I'm certain most of you haven't played -- Mansion of Hidden Souls for the Sega CD add-on for the Genesis.   This is a classic point-and-click adventure title, like Myst, but about butterflies and poorly placed keys.  A selection by one Billy Holiday, and an episode not to be missed! We also answer a listener question : What are our favorite / least favorite snow levels in classic gaming? Also, like every show, we reveal next show's topic.  Our next show will be around Christmas, so what game do you think we picked?

We're back from our long one-week unplanned absence to kick off 2016 with a bang! We're going back to the TG-16 for JJ and Jeff this week-- will this be the game that convinces Jeremy and Billy that they missed out on the Turbografx during the 16 bit era? Additionally, we look back at 2015 to discuss our favorite hits and misses of the year, and what we're looking forward to in 2016.

We dive into the late Sega Master System library and unearth quite the diamond, Golden Axe Warrior.  Well, it's more like Cubic Zirconia.  It looks nice, it might impress someone who has no idea about what they are looking at, and it's clearly a copy of something far more impressive.  Honestly, it has a lot more in common with a Nintendo classic than anything else with the Golden Axe name on it. We also take a listener question this week: What game can you play over and over due to nostalgia that you also can admit is a pretty terrible game? Next week, put on your swamp hat, and dust off the NES -- we're heading to the Bayou...

This week, Jeremy P ruins what would be an otherwise great episode by forcing everyone to play The Adventures of Bayou Billy, in honor of it's recent re-release on the Wii U eShop.   How can a game that offers 3 different gaming modes go so horribly wrong?  We dive into the swamp of disappointment this week to discuss this Konami misfire. We also take a look back at our favorite mispronunciations of gaming titles and names, and discuss our favorite codes and secrets with some listener questions! Next week game : Skullmonkeys (PS)

A retro review of a game that was retro even when it was new - this week we plugged in our Playstations to talk about the claytastic platformer, Skullmonkeys! We also discuss the concept of remakes and re-imaginings, and Billy admits he likes a game we were pretty sure nobody liked. Next week, get your fighting gloves on, it's Eternal Champions for the Genesis / Sega CD!

For our second show, we take a look at forgotten (?) classic (???) Low G Man, for the NES. We also answer our first listener question : Why is ET (Atari 2600) considered the worst game ever made?  Is it? Audio quality improves, while game selection does not!

Our first fighting game, and in one of us shares his revelation that he's just not good at 2D fighting games. We also answer a solid listener question, regarding our dirty little gaming secret that could ruin our reputations as retro game enthusiasts! Next week-- fire up the jets, it's The Guardian Legend for the NES.

Jeremy P's pick this week is a blend of top down space shooter, Zelda-style exploration and RPG, and more than a little puzzling to the rest of the Retrovaniacs team.   We also discuss favorite rentals / purchases that we knew nothing about ahead of time that ended up being long-time favorites. Next week : SNIKT!  It's X-Men for the Sega Genesis!

After a week break due to illness and Easter, we return with a new show focused on a non-LJN Xmen game!   We also discuss our time with Miitomo, and talk way, way too much about Tiger Handhelds again. Next episode will be Jumping Flash for the Sony Playstation!

Get prepared to fall from the atmosphere on purpose in this early Playstation entry, Jumping Flash!   Will this boxy 3d game age as poorly as other games of the era?  Listen to find out what we thought! We play the lesser known sequel to the classic Zombies Ate My Neighbors this week, Ghoul Patrol for the Super Nintendo.  Does it compare to it's younger and more famous brother, or is this the Jermaine Jackson to Zombie's Michael Jackson?  Find out what we think! Also discussed, best and worst classic gaming endings, and Billy has a reveal that will shake the foundations of Retrovaniacs to it's very core! Next week it's our 1 year anniversary show, and we take on Banjo-Kazooie for the N64!

It's our 25th episode, 1-year anniversary supershow!  How do we celebrate?  Why, by reviewing an old video game! This week we look back at Banjo-Kazooie, a 3d platformer from the Nintendo 64, one of Jeremy's recommendations, and a probably the most current game we've reviewed, and that still puts it out almost 20 years ago!  Does it still hold up today? This week get in the ring for 30-ish minutes with one of the classics of the early NES library, Pro Wrestling!   Billy and the Jeremys discuss what made this game such a standout, and compare it to other wrestling games of the day, and revisit it again now to see how it stands up. Also this week : A hard hitting look at our favorite E3 retro announcements, and we go toe-to-toe with our backlogs and talk about the Summer Steam Sale!

This week we take on our 2nd listener request for the podcast, Kendo Rage for the SNES!   Listen as we fumble our way through a 2d action/platformer with interesting bosses, and ... well, maybe that's the high note.   Lots of little audio problems were dealt with to record this episode, so as bad as parts of it may sound, it was WAY worse before Jeremy P spent an evening or two working on it. Also discussed, a listener question regarding emulation versus units like the upcoming mini NES and the Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision Flashback units, and why grown men are excited about 30 old NES games coming out again in November. Get ready, because next week we take on the RPG genre for the first time with Super Mario RPG for the Super Nintendo!

Join the Retrovaniacs as we take on our first RPG - Super Mario RPG: Secret of the Seven Stars!   An interesting effort by Square and Nintendo from 1996, but does it hold up today?  Does anyone fondly remember Mallow?  Why isn't Geno more popular?  This and many other questions will arise as we take on the longest game we've looked at to date! Also discussed, game controllers we loved or always wanted! Next episode will be Robocop vs The Terminator for the Sega Genesis!

Robocop fights Terminators. We shouldn't have to say any more to sell you on this, but that would be a 5 second podcast, so instead we say a lot more about the game including: a comparison between this and the Super Nintendo version of this game, a discussion of time travel mechanics, and thankfully completely ignore the Terminator movies after T2. We also tackle a listener question regarding what game we would play if we knew this was our last few minutes alive! In an unprecedented display of planning, we have our next two games already chosen!  First up is Air Zonk for the TurboGrafx-16 (listener request), and then we take on one of Jeremy P's favorite games of all time, Kid Icarus for the NES.

Another listener request this time, we're looking at Air Zonk for the Turbografx-16, a branch of the Bonk family of games that takes the franchise from side-scrolling action game to shooter.  Could this finally be a TG-16 game that Billy and Jeremy don't hate? Also discussed, notable game save losses that brought the three of us back from a gaming high to yet another depressing low. Next week : Jeremy and Billy finally play a guaranteed NES classic they somehow have missed over the past 30 years.

We kick off October's Halloween Retroween right, with an episode about one of the strangest games on the NES, Monster Party!  We know we said we were doing Kid Icarus, but that's not going to happen until November now -- we've got to get in the Halloween spirit! Also, Jeremy P really thinks he's getting a PS4, so he has some questions regarding the newly released Slim and the soon-to-be-released Pro. Retroween continues next time in Episode 35, a 16-bit Castlevania extravaganza!

We may be short one Billy Holiday this week, but don't be scared -- he will be back next episode!  This week, however, the Jeremys take you on a journey spanning 4 years and 3 consoles to discuss Super Castlevania 4 (SNES), Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis), Dracula X (SNES), and the japanese only Castlevania : Rondo of Blood (PC Engine CD)! Next week, we return to our usual format and take on Kid Icarus for the NES! Happy Halloween!

Billy returns to Retrovanicas this week!  Just in time for the release of the NES Classic, we're taking a lengthy look at Kid Icarus, a classic that is also a featured game on the Classic!   We dig deep into this game which Jeremy P has declared is "his favorite NES game of all time"-- and both Billy and Jeremy hadn't played it before, so this one could cause some fist fights.

We also kick the show off with a special announcement of sorts, and finally Billy gets to tell us all what he thinks of the switch!

 

Next episode we take on another listener request - Golgo 13!

 

We take on yet another listener request, Golgo 13 : Top Secret Mission for the Nintendo Entertainment System.   A game that combines adventure sections with several other gameplay styles, that spans the globe is certainly an ambitious game to design -- but is it any fun?

We also discuss classic games we love that we can also see why if we had never played them beforet today may not be as highly regarded.

Next week : Tomba! for the Playstation

Doing something a little different this week -- before Retrovaniacs the podcast, there was just Retrovania.net, a site where we posted video reviews and gaming articles.  One of those reviews was on Tomba! for the Sony Playstation.   This review received the most criticism from folks who didn't agree with Jeremy Gregory -- including Jeremy Parmentier.    One Jeremy loves it, one Jeremy hates it, and Billy Holiday is here playing for the first time. 

We're taking a second look at Tomba!, an interesting 2D/3D questing platformer for the Sony Playstation, and then we spend FAR too long discussing our thoughts on the first 10-20 hours of Final Fantasy XV!   So -- if you have no interest in hearing about FFXV, you can skip the last half of the show!

 

It's a very Retrovaniacs Christmas, with a loosely holiday themed game -- Batman Returns for mainly the SNES and Sega Genesis!  Watch the movie, it happens around Christmas.  Also there is a level with Christmas presents in the background.

Look, we're clearly stretching here to tie this one to the holidays, but we do have a Christmas present related listener question, which brings us back to the Christmas mornings of yesteryears.

We're not just Nintendo fanboys, and this week we delve for the first time into the library of the Sega Genesis for cult hit, General Chaos. Why would someone make a real-time strategy combat game on the Genesis? We aren't sure, but the resulting game was definitely unforgettable. Also discussed this week were Batman: Arkham Knight, random JRPGs that Jeremy P is wasting his time with, and we cover some of the Kickstarter retro projects that have come through that we are excited about seeing or are disappointed in their failures.

This week we review a game based on one of the best action movies of all time, Predator for the NES.  Will this game be nearly as good as the movie it's based on?

Also we look back at 2016, listing our favorite games and biggest disappointments, and try not to just cry about the Wii U.

Next up : We look at a run-and-gun shooter on the NEO GEO...

We take our first look at the NeoGeo system, with a series of games that will definitely challenge your run-and-gun shooter skillls, Metal Slug 1-6 (via the Metal Slug Anthology).  Before we dig into what Billy has aptly described as "cartoon Contra", we reflect on the NeoGeo itself, and why none of us have ever owned one.

We also answer a listener question : What same-room multiplayer games would cause the most confrontation, and what were you good at?

Also -- Jeremy P talks a little Zelda and the Switch release, and both of us gush over the recently announced "Disney Afternoon Classics" collection hitting in less than a month, which is probably the best gaming announcement of 2017. 

Jeremy P and Jeremy take on a SNES game that both of us thought was another game when we heard it.  Skyblazer for the SNES is actually NOT Soulblazer, and is instead an amalgamation of many SNES action adventure games we had played previously.

Does this make this game notably amazing like chocolate and peanut butter, or not as great like pickles and caramel. I don't know what that means, but clearly I need to eat.

Billy should return next week, when we celebrate the release of the Disney Afternoon Classics collection, as we play ALL 6 games in their original NES format.

Something different this time, a modern retro compilation episode!  Billy returns to discuss one of the best compilations of classic NES titles -- the Disney Afternoon Collection!   We cover all 5 titles, Ducktales and Ducktales 2, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers 1 & 2, Talespin, and Darkwing Duck.   Have these titles aged well?  Does this collection provide enough to make it worth grabbing?  (Spoilers: the answer to both is a resounding yes!)

Also, as Billy is here, Jeremy and Billy discuss their new Switches and what they think of them, and we all mourn the end of the NES Classic.

The three of us take a look at a 1995 Sega Genesis game we had never played before, Vectorman!  Included on several collections of Genesis games, most notably the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Vectorman seemed to be Sega's answer to Donkey Kong Country-- but how does it hold up in 2017?

It's our 50th episode, and we wanted to cover a classic game series that wasn't one of the major characters, so we chose Earthworm Jim!  We take close looks at the first two games in the series, and a glancing look at the regrettable 3D entry.

THIS ISN'T SUPER BLACK BASS!?  No, as Billy was unavailable this week, the Jeremy's instead delayed that episode and instead took this chance to talk about where Final Fantasy VIII went wrong.  We apologize in advance for a very negative episode about FFVIII, but we do go into detail about what specifically we don't like, and it's not just that the characters are hateable and the story is awful.

Jeremy P has tried playing through this game many, many times, and most recently spent several weeks of 2017 getting to the very end of it before life forced him to throw in the towel.  Will he play it again?  What exactly doesn't he like about this game?

This week we again did not review a fishing game, but instead take on a multi-platform sci-fi action adventure game, Flashback.  The follow up game to Another World, Flashback merged PC adventure puzzle games and 2d action platformers, and wrapped it in a neat story that's part Total Recall, part They Live, part The Running Man-- really how could that go wrong?

Also discussed this week, the newest AtGames Sega Flashback unit.  Will this be as nice as more recent official retro system releases?

Better late than never (somewhat appropriate anyway for a retro gaming show), we cover the first Blizzard release (as Blizzard), Blackthorne.  We mostly focus on the SNES version, but also cover the PC and 32X releases.  32X?  Really? Football season is here, and so we celebrate it the only way we know how -- by reviewing Mutant League Football for the Genesis. We also discuss one of our favorite systems of all time, the Sega Dreamcast, on it's 16th anniversary (of the US release).

Originally released on SNES and Genesis, we all played the SNES version for this review. Bart has to complete a paper and waits until the last minute, and he falls asleep. We're taking a look at the Metroid series first game into a 3D environment with 2002's Metroid Prime.  Released at the same time as Metroid Fusion - a more standard 2d Metroid game on the Game Boy Advance, this was a game developed by Retro Studios for Nintendo that tried to take the series into literally a new dimension.  Did it succeed in it's purpose, and is this still worth playing now?  We'll let you know our thoughts on it.

This time we tried something slightly different from the norm, instead of looking at one specific game, we are looking at two very similar top down shooters from the NES era, Alpha Mission (by SNK) and Star Force (by Tecmo).  Both of these arcade ports are ones that we had as kids -- both share the dubious honor of being a game we bought "because they were there" and as a result played them a lot.

We look at these two games specifically to answer a question : Is it better to be a game that tries to do a lot of interesting things but sort of fails, or a game that tries to do almost nothing and succeeds?

We also answer several listener questions about arcade ports, bonus show questions, and a listener feels we missed the mark on Starfox 2 a while ago.

We're covering another request - Suikoden for the PlayStation!  This game is a classic style JRPG that adds a large cast of playable characters, large scale battles, and an upgrade system that allows you to really modify your party in many ways.  This game led to a series that was prevalent on the PlayStation 1 and 2, but has faded out over the years, although there is an HD remaster on the way.  We played the original to see how this one holds up today!

We're doing another patron request, this time we're looking at The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy (aka Fantastic Dizzy) for the NES!  The Dizzy series was pretty big in Europe due to it's popularity on home computers, but in the US we didn't really get into it - but in 1991, Codemasters and Camerica made a big bet on Dizzy for the NES, building a new game that took the "Greatest Hits" of the previous Dizzy titles and bringing it to video game consoles.  We're all new to the world of the Yolkfolk, so we're taking a look at this action puzzler now!

It's our last show of 2024, and as tradition dictates we're going to clean out the mailbag to kick off the new year.  However, this year we're also taking on the Action MAX by Patron request, which was a videotape requiring home light gun console released in 1987.  We compared this system with another toy/game that was out the same time, Captain Power. Our apparent love affair with Rare continues, as we look at another one of their offerings, Conker's Bad Fur Day. Originally released on the Nintendo 64, it was re-released later with some multiplayer addons for the XBox. Why would you play another cartoony looking 3d platformer? Maybe because this one, despite its looks, is clearly not for kids. Is that a good thing? We played it again to see!

This RPG is a bit different from most turn-based RPGs, in that everything you do has some specific timing involved, the setting is a little out of the ordinary, and your main character can turn into different demons during the game. Our second game for #FightMonth is a Rare created and Nintendo published fighter - Killer Instinct! We have played New Adventure Island for the TG16 before for the show, and we had all played earlier Adventure Island games, so we assumed this was yet another standard platformer where you collect fruit and run from left to right-- and we were wrong! In honor of the new Sonic movie sequel that is out now, we're looking back at another Sonic sequel, this time the 2001 Dreamcast outing Sonic Adventure 2!  Ditching the open world sections of the previous game, this is a more streamlined experience, but one where you only play Sonic maybe 1/6th of the time.  An interesting decision, but was it a good one?

We're covering another wrestling game, sort of?  WWF Betrayal is actually a side scrolling beat em up for the Game Boy Color, featuring 4 of the biggest stars WWF had to offer in 2001.  This game was developed by WayForward, who make some of the nicest retro-styled games to this day.  Was this a good blend of a solid license and a great developer?

Ported to Sega CD, this was originally a PC game that put you in the shoes of unlikely pirate, Guybrush Threepwood, and follows his quest to become a pirate and in the process defeat the evil ghost pirate LeChuck! If you like classic point and click adventure games, this may be well worth looking into - we'll tell you why!

It's been a relatively Star Wars heavy few months, and we're going to pile right in on that with our look at 2002's tie-in game to Attack of the Clones, Star Wars : Bounty Hunter! This game attempts to explain why Jango Fett was chosen to be the source of the DNA for the clone army, and allows you to be one of the galaxy's most feared bounty hunters!  But, much like many Star Wars tie-in products over the years, is this game worth the republic credits?
