21 Feb 2017300 YouTube Subscriber Thank You!00:07:41

No new show this week, due to some scheduling conflicts (and that we're talking about 4+ games for our next show), we've had to push off the Double Dragon show to next Tuesday.  However, we did want to take time to personally thank everyone for listening as we hit our 300 subscriber mark on YouTube!

See you in a week for Double Dragon 1-4, and thank you for listening and watching over the last two years!

25 May 2015Episode 1 - Axelay (SNES)00:38:45
For our first attempt at this, we took a look at the 1992 SNES classic, Axelay. As this was our first show, there are some minor audio issues, but rest assured we are working the kinks out and the next show should sound a lot better.
29 Sep 2015Episode 10 - Super Mario Maker (Wii U)00:46:30
It's our 10th episode spectacular, and this week we have chosen to slip slightly out of our own guidelines to cover not a true classic game, but a modern game that should appeal to any classic NES fan, Super Mario Maker for the Wii U!   It's got all the classic 2D Mario action that you could ever want or imagine, and as such we get to talk about staples of a series we have been playing for 30 years. Also this week, Jeremy G has an electronic doomsday of sorts, and that leads him down a path that thankfully leads to the Rare Replay collection for the Xbox One!
14 Oct 2015Episode 11 - Haunting starring Polterguy (Genesis)00:57:45
It's the start of our first Halloween, and so we focus our eyes on a spoooooooky Genesis classic, Haunting starring Polterguy, the only game I'm aware of where you can possess a couch. We also have our regular (terrifying!) updates on what we're all playing, and this week's (bloodcurdling?) listener question : "What system did you never have (when it was current) that you really wanted and didn't get?" Next week, prepare yourselves for a future Halloween classic episode, where we take on all things Splatterhouse!
28 Oct 2015Episode 12 : The Splatterhouse Series (Turbografx 16 and Genesis)01:16:00
It's the second part of our Halloween extravaganza, and this week we look at not one... but THREE classic video games.  First up, we revisit the Turbografx-16 and the original Splatterhouse, in which Rick and Jennifer make the mistake of getting out of the rain at an abandoned mansion.  Then we switch to the Sega Genesis for Splatterhouse 2, where Rick returns to save Jennifer (again) with the help of the demon mask.  Finally, we dig up the bones of Splatterhouse 3, in which the series tries to do some new things, and the results are less than stellar. Our listener question for this week is two-fold : What game gave you your first real jump-scare?  What game has scared you the most ever?  Shockingly, Billy and Jeremy P didn't say General Chaos. For more Halloween gaming excitement, don't forget to check out Retrovania.net for the rest of the month!
11 Nov 2015Episode 13 - Little Nemo the Dream Master (NES)00:50:31
This week, we take a look at the NES 1990 classic, Little Nemo the Dream Master.  This might be the only game where you feed candy to a bee, but we made no research to back that claim up. We also answer a listener question about regrettable game sales.  Billy uses this time to get teary-eyed about an MC Hammer game.
26 Nov 2015Episode 14 : Blast Corps (N64)00:55:15
It's almost Thanksgiving, and at Retrovaniacs, we didn't want you to think we'd miss out on this opportunity to... ok, this game has nothing to do with Thanksgiving.  It's Blast Corps, the first RARE created game for the Nintendo 64, and it's this week's amazing choice for our look back through the annals of gaming. In honor of Thanksgiving (and the start of the Christmas season), we tell some Black Friday stories and generally feel smug that thanks to the internet, we can all sit in our house on Black Friday eating stuffing and cranberry sandwiches while we buy gifts for relatives we rarely enjoy spending time with.
09 Dec 2015Episode 15 : Mansion of Hidden Souls (Sega CD)00:51:44
Here's a game I'm certain most of you haven't played -- Mansion of Hidden Souls for the Sega CD add-on for the Genesis.   This is a classic point-and-click adventure title, like Myst, but about butterflies and poorly placed keys.  A selection by one Billy Holiday, and an episode not to be missed! We also answer a listener question : What are our favorite / least favorite snow levels in classic gaming? Also, like every show, we reveal next show's topic.  Our next show will be around Christmas, so what game do you think we picked?
06 Jan 2016Episode 16 : JJ and Jeff (Turbografx-16)01:06:08
We're back from our long one-week unplanned absence to kick off 2016 with a bang! We're going back to the TG-16 for JJ and Jeff this week-- will this be the game that convinces Jeremy and Billy that they missed out on the Turbografx during the 16 bit era? Additionally, we look back at 2015 to discuss our favorite hits and misses of the year, and what we're looking forward to in 2016.
20 Jan 2016Episode 17 : Golden Axe Warrior (Sega Master System)00:54:33
We dive into the late Sega Master System library and unearth quite the diamond, Golden Axe Warrior.  Well, it's more like Cubic Zirconia.  It looks nice, it might impress someone who has no idea about what they are looking at, and it's clearly a copy of something far more impressive.  Honestly, it has a lot more in common with a Nintendo classic than anything else with the Golden Axe name on it. We also take a listener question this week: What game can you play over and over due to nostalgia that you also can admit is a pretty terrible game? Next week, put on your swamp hat, and dust off the NES -- we're heading to the Bayou...
04 Feb 2016Episode 18 : The Adventures of Bayou Billy (NES)01:24:18
This week, Jeremy P ruins what would be an otherwise great episode by forcing everyone to play The Adventures of Bayou Billy, in honor of it's recent re-release on the Wii U eShop.   How can a game that offers 3 different gaming modes go so horribly wrong?  We dive into the swamp of disappointment this week to discuss this Konami misfire. We also take a look back at our favorite mispronunciations of gaming titles and names, and discuss our favorite codes and secrets with some listener questions! Next week game : Skullmonkeys (PS)
17 Feb 2016Episode 19 : Skullmonkeys (Playstation)00:54:49
A retro review of a game that was retro even when it was new - this week we plugged in our Playstations to talk about the claytastic platformer, Skullmonkeys! We also discuss the concept of remakes and re-imaginings, and Billy admits he likes a game we were pretty sure nobody liked. Next week, get your fighting gloves on, it's Eternal Champions for the Genesis / Sega CD!
09 Jun 2015Episode 2 - Low G Man (NES)00:48:14
For our second show, we take a look at forgotten (?) classic (???) Low G Man, for the NES. We also answer our first listener question : Why is ET (Atari 2600) considered the worst game ever made?  Is it? Audio quality improves, while game selection does not!
04 Mar 2016Episode 20 : Eternal Champions (Genesis and Sega CD)01:05:34
Our first fighting game, and in one of us shares his revelation that he's just not good at 2D fighting games. We also answer a solid listener question, regarding our dirty little gaming secret that could ruin our reputations as retro game enthusiasts! Next week-- fire up the jets, it's The Guardian Legend for the NES.
16 Mar 2016Episode 21 : The Guardian Legend (NES)01:05:17
Jeremy P's pick this week is a blend of top down space shooter, Zelda-style exploration and RPG, and more than a little puzzling to the rest of the Retrovaniacs team.   We also discuss favorite rentals / purchases that we knew nothing about ahead of time that ended up being long-time favorites. Next week : SNIKT!  It's X-Men for the Sega Genesis!
06 Apr 2016Episode 22 : Xmen (Genesis)00:54:08
After a week break due to illness and Easter, we return with a new show focused on a non-LJN Xmen game!   We also discuss our time with Miitomo, and talk way, way too much about Tiger Handhelds again. Next episode will be Jumping Flash for the Sony Playstation!
20 Apr 2016Episode 23 : Jumping Flash! (Playstation)01:05:50
Get prepared to fall from the atmosphere on purpose in this early Playstation entry, Jumping Flash!   Will this boxy 3d game age as poorly as other games of the era?  Listen to find out what we thought! We also look back at the Playstation launch and other system launches over the years, and have a Dreamcast support group meeting. Next week : Ghoul Patrol (SNES)
04 May 2016Episode 24 : Ghoul Patrol (SNES)00:55:49
We play the lesser known sequel to the classic Zombies Ate My Neighbors this week, Ghoul Patrol for the Super Nintendo.  Does it compare to it's younger and more famous brother, or is this the Jermaine Jackson to Zombie's Michael Jackson?  Find out what we think! Also discussed, best and worst classic gaming endings, and Billy has a reveal that will shake the foundations of Retrovaniacs to it's very core! Next week it's our 1 year anniversary show, and we take on Banjo-Kazooie for the N64!
20 May 2016Episode 25 : Banjo-Kazooie (N64)01:50:35
It's our 25th episode, 1-year anniversary supershow!  How do we celebrate?  Why, by reviewing an old video game! This week we look back at Banjo-Kazooie, a 3d platformer from the Nintendo 64, one of Jeremy's recommendations, and a probably the most current game we've reviewed, and that still puts it out almost 20 years ago!  Does it still hold up today? Also we pull back the curtain on ourselves, and how we pick these games, with some listener questions! Next week, join us as we start off year 2 of Retrovaniacs with Fighting Force for the Sony Playstation!
01 Jun 2016Episode 26 : Fighting Force (Playstation)00:58:22
We kick off year 2 of Retrovaniacs with a bang- or at least a good deal of punches and kicks.  This time we look back at Fighting Force for the Sony Playstation, a 3d take on 2d classics of the past like Double Dragon or Streets of Rage.  Does it make the transition to 3d smoothly?  Listen and find out what we think! We also take our first listener request for next week's game, and answer a listener question about classic gaming magazines and code books. Next week (by request) - Young Merlin for the Super Nintendo!
16 Jun 2016Episode 27 : Young Merlin (SNES)01:01:33
The Retrovaniacs take their first listener request, an action adventure game none of us had heard of before, Young Merlin on the Super Nintendo!  Join us as we delve into Merlin's sordid past, and ride more than our fair share of minecarts on the way. Do you have a request for Retrovaniacs?  Let us know on Twitter, @retrovaniacs or via our Facebook page or a well aimed carrier pigeon. Next episode, get ready to look everywhere for that remote you misplaced, because we're taking on Gex on the Sony Playstation.
08 Jul 2016Episode 28 : Gex (Playstation)00:59:48
After a week of delay, Retrovaniacs returns for some Tail Time with the original Gex for the Sony Playstation! Also, a listener calls us out for what appears to be some contradicting thoughts on video game endings, and Billy teases us with a dark secret he will share next episode. Next episode, grab your Yo-yo and Spring Shoes, we'll be playing Goonies 2 on the NES!
21 Jul 2016Episode 29 : Goonies 2 (NES)00:59:40
Brush up on your Truffle Shuffle and make sure to have a Baby Ruth on hand, because this week we're delving into one of Jeremy P's favorite games, Goonies 2 on the NES. We also discuss the upcoming NES Mini, which is probably going to be way bigger than the Wii U and NX, despite being based on technology from 30+ years ago! Next week, we tackle another listener request, a game we know nothing about -- Kendo Rage for the SNES. Make sure to follow us on Twitter (@retrovaniacs) to get some extras like snapshots of the Official Nintendo Player's Guide entry for this game, Vines, and random feedback about each episode and videos on Retrovania.net.
23 Jun 2015Episode 3 - Pro Wrestling (NES)00:41:42
This week get in the ring for 30-ish minutes with one of the classics of the early NES library, Pro Wrestling!   Billy and the Jeremys discuss what made this game such a standout, and compare it to other wrestling games of the day, and revisit it again now to see how it stands up. Also this week : A hard hitting look at our favorite E3 retro announcements, and we go toe-to-toe with our backlogs and talk about the Summer Steam Sale!
03 Aug 2016Episode 30 : Kendo Rage (SNES)01:04:23
This week we take on our 2nd listener request for the podcast, Kendo Rage for the SNES!   Listen as we fumble our way through a 2d action/platformer with interesting bosses, and ... well, maybe that's the high note.   Lots of little audio problems were dealt with to record this episode, so as bad as parts of it may sound, it was WAY worse before Jeremy P spent an evening or two working on it. Also discussed, a listener question regarding emulation versus units like the upcoming mini NES and the Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision Flashback units, and why grown men are excited about 30 old NES games coming out again in November. Get ready, because next week we take on the RPG genre for the first time with Super Mario RPG for the Super Nintendo!
17 Aug 2016Episode 31 : Super Mario RPG (SNES)01:33:20
Join the Retrovaniacs as we take on our first RPG - Super Mario RPG: Secret of the Seven Stars!   An interesting effort by Square and Nintendo from 1996, but does it hold up today?  Does anyone fondly remember Mallow?  Why isn't Geno more popular?  This and many other questions will arise as we take on the longest game we've looked at to date! Also discussed, game controllers we loved or always wanted! Next episode will be Robocop vs The Terminator for the Sega Genesis!
01 Sep 2016Episode 32 : Robocop Vs Terminator (Genesis)01:04:51
Robocop fights Terminators. We shouldn't have to say any more to sell you on this, but that would be a 5 second podcast, so instead we say a lot more about the game including: a comparison between this and the Super Nintendo version of this game, a discussion of time travel mechanics, and thankfully completely ignore the Terminator movies after T2. We also tackle a listener question regarding what game we would play if we knew this was our last few minutes alive! In an unprecedented display of planning, we have our next two games already chosen!  First up is Air Zonk for the TurboGrafx-16 (listener request), and then we take on one of Jeremy P's favorite games of all time, Kid Icarus for the NES.
18 Sep 2016Episode 33 : Air Zonk (TurboGrafx-16)01:00:18
Another listener request this time, we're looking at Air Zonk for the Turbografx-16, a branch of the Bonk family of games that takes the franchise from side-scrolling action game to shooter.  Could this finally be a TG-16 game that Billy and Jeremy don't hate? Also discussed, notable game save losses that brought the three of us back from a gaming high to yet another depressing low. Next week : Jeremy and Billy finally play a guaranteed NES classic they somehow have missed over the past 30 years.
07 Oct 2016Episode 34: Monster Party (NES)01:12:26
We kick off October's Halloween Retroween right, with an episode about one of the strangest games on the NES, Monster Party!  We know we said we were doing Kid Icarus, but that's not going to happen until November now -- we've got to get in the Halloween spirit! Also, Jeremy P really thinks he's getting a PS4, so he has some questions regarding the newly released Slim and the soon-to-be-released Pro. Retroween continues next time in Episode 35, a 16-bit Castlevania extravaganza!
28 Oct 2016Episode 35 : 16-Bit Castlevanias (Halloween 2016)01:14:03
We may be short one Billy Holiday this week, but don't be scared -- he will be back next episode!  This week, however, the Jeremys take you on a journey spanning 4 years and 3 consoles to discuss Super Castlevania 4 (SNES), Castlevania Bloodlines (Genesis), Dracula X (SNES), and the japanese only Castlevania : Rondo of Blood (PC Engine CD)! Next week, we return to our usual format and take on Kid Icarus for the NES! Happy Halloween!
11 Nov 2016Episode 36 : Kid Icarus (NES)01:32:20

Billy returns to Retrovanicas this week!  Just in time for the release of the NES Classic, we're taking a lengthy look at Kid Icarus, a classic that is also a featured game on the Classic!   We dig deep into this game which Jeremy P has declared is "his favorite NES game of all time"-- and both Billy and Jeremy hadn't played it before, so this one could cause some fist fights.

We also kick the show off with a special announcement of sorts, and finally Billy gets to tell us all what he thinks of the switch!

Next episode we take on another listener request - Golgo 13!

27 Nov 2016Episode 37 : Golgo 13 (NES)01:04:29

We take on yet another listener request, Golgo 13 : Top Secret Mission for the Nintendo Entertainment System.   A game that combines adventure sections with several other gameplay styles, that spans the globe is certainly an ambitious game to design -- but is it any fun?

We also discuss classic games we love that we can also see why if we had never played them beforet today may not be as highly regarded.

Next week : Tomba! for the Playstation

16 Dec 2016Episode 38: Tomba! (Playstation)00:58:39

Doing something a little different this week -- before Retrovaniacs the podcast, there was just Retrovania.net, a site where we posted video reviews and gaming articles.  One of those reviews was on Tomba! for the Sony Playstation.   This review received the most criticism from folks who didn't agree with Jeremy Gregory -- including Jeremy Parmentier.    One Jeremy loves it, one Jeremy hates it, and Billy Holiday is here playing for the first time.

We're taking a second look at Tomba!, an interesting 2D/3D questing platformer for the Sony Playstation, and then we spend FAR too long discussing our thoughts on the first 10-20 hours of Final Fantasy XV!   So -- if you have no interest in hearing about FFXV, you can skip the last half of the show!

24 Dec 2016Episode 39 : Batman Returns (Multiplatform)01:09:42

It's a very Retrovaniacs Christmas, with a loosely holiday themed game -- Batman Returns for mainly the SNES and Sega Genesis!  Watch the movie, it happens around Christmas.  Also there is a level with Christmas presents in the background.

Look, we're clearly stretching here to tie this one to the holidays, but we do have a Christmas present related listener question, which brings us back to the Christmas mornings of yesteryears.

Next episode : If it bleeds, we can kill it...

07 Jul 2015Episode 4 - General Chaos (Genesis)00:42:25
We're not just Nintendo fanboys, and this week we delve for the first time into the library of the Sega Genesis for cult hit, General Chaos. Why would someone make a real-time strategy combat game on the Genesis? We aren't sure, but the resulting game was definitely unforgettable. Also discussed this week were Batman: Arkham Knight, random JRPGs that Jeremy P is wasting his time with, and we cover some of the Kickstarter retro projects that have come through that we are excited about seeing or are disappointed in their failures.
10 Jan 2017Episode 40: Predator (NES)01:11:55

This week we review a game based on one of the best action movies of all time, Predator for the NES.  Will this game be nearly as good as the movie it's based on?

Also we look back at 2016, listing our favorite games and biggest disappointments, and try not to just cry about the Wii U.

Next up : We look at a run-and-gun shooter on the NEO GEO...

24 Jan 2017Episode 41 : Metal Slug (NeoGeo)01:14:15

We take our first look at the NeoGeo system, with a series of games that will definitely challenge your run-and-gun shooter skillls, Metal Slug 1-6 (via the Metal Slug Anthology).  Before we dig into what Billy has aptly described as "cartoon Contra", we reflect on the NeoGeo itself, and why none of us have ever owned one.

We also answer a listener question : What same-room multiplayer games would cause the most confrontation, and what were you good at?

Check out our Twitter feed, @retrovaniacs, where we'll put some links to videos of Jeremy P playing Metal Slug!

Next week, we try out some pinball.  Or spinball.  Or something.

08 Feb 2017Episode 42 : Sonic Spinball (Genesis)00:43:30

Join the Retrovaniacs this week as we visit the world of video pinball the first time, with Sonic Spinball for the Sega Genesis.

Also discussed is a listener question about what started us all in gaming, which isn't as depressing an answer as you'd believe.

Next week : It's the return of Bimmy and Jimmy-- in 2017?

28 Feb 2017Episode 43 : Double Dragon 1 - 4 (NES and PS4/PC)01:06:32

This week Billy couldn't join us, so we have guest host Dave Boyce of Broken Glasses Gaming, the Clouded Judgement Podcast, and Preternia.com here to help us cover a classic series with a modern sequel -- Double Dragon!

We walk through our thoughts on the first 3 games on the NES, and then dive into the new sequel Double Dragon 4 for the PS4 and PC, a brand new game that looks exactly like it's 8 bit brethren.

Thanks again Dave!

Next time : Billy returns to help us take on another attempt by Jeremy P to force the Turbografx-16 on everyone, with Military Madness.

20 Mar 2017Episode 44 : Military Madness (TurboGrafx-16)00:50:00

Billy is MIA still, but the show must go on -- and so the Jeremys cover a strategy classic for the TurboGrafx, Military Madness.

Also -- Jeremy P talks a little Zelda and the Switch release, and both of us gush over the recently announced "Disney Afternoon Classics" collection hitting in less than a month, which is probably the best gaming announcement of 2017.

07 Apr 2017Episode 45 : Skyblazer (SNES)01:07:43

Jeremy P and Jeremy take on a SNES game that both of us thought was another game when we heard it.  Skyblazer for the SNES is actually NOT Soulblazer, and is instead an amalgamation of many SNES action adventure games we had played previously.

Does this make this game notably amazing like chocolate and peanut butter, or not as great like pickles and caramel. I don't know what that means, but clearly I need to eat.

Billy should return next week, when we celebrate the release of the Disney Afternoon Classics collection, as we play ALL 6 games in their original NES format.

25 Apr 2017Episode 46 : Disney Afternoon Classics (NES)01:05:45

Something different this time, a modern retro compilation episode!  Billy returns to discuss one of the best compilations of classic NES titles -- the Disney Afternoon Collection!   We cover all 5 titles, Ducktales and Ducktales 2, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers 1 & 2, Talespin, and Darkwing Duck.   Have these titles aged well?  Does this collection provide enough to make it worth grabbing?  (Spoilers: the answer to both is a resounding yes!)

Also, as Billy is here, Jeremy and Billy discuss their new Switches and what they think of them, and we all mourn the end of the NES Classic.

Next episode : Back to basics, one classic console game discussed -- Vectorman for the Genesis

06 May 2017Episode 47 : Vectorman (Genesis)01:03:57

The three of us take a look at a 1995 Sega Genesis game we had never played before, Vectorman!  Included on several collections of Genesis games, most notably the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection, Vectorman seemed to be Sega's answer to Donkey Kong Country-- but how does it hold up in 2017?

Want to skip right to Vectorman?  Start listening at 12:14!

Next episode we hit another time-relevant favorite of Jeremy P's with Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap for the Sega Master System.

13 Jun 2017Episode 49: Uninvited (NES)01:04:40

This week, the Retrovaniacs take a (spoiler filled) look at an NES port of a Macventure title, Uninvited!  Was anyone able to complete this graphic point-and-click adventure without looking up some hints?  Did any of us finish this game at all?   Listen to find out!  Spoilers abound here though, so if you somehow are in the middle of this game and don't want to figure out what the tomato monster is -- probably stop at around the 30 minute mark!

*** AGAIN PLEASE NOTE, LOTS OF SPOILERS HERE! ***

Afterwards, the Jeremys talk way too much about Persona 5, but that won't happen until 53:30, so you should stop there if you don't want some very minor early game spoilers.

Want to skip the pre-game updates, start up the show at 5:40!

Next up it's episode 50, and that means we take on a classic series starting one of our favorite invertibrates!

22 Jul 2015Episode 5 - Toe Jam and Earl (Genesis)01:00:59
We delve into the Sega Genesis classic, Toe Jam and Earl this week, including discussion of the lesser well received sequels and the Kickstarter-funded sequel in development now. Also covered, Persona 4 and other games with "bad" endings, a listener question about Emulator Console Systems, and we beg for more positive iTunes reviews.
07 Jul 2017Episode 50: Earthworm Jim series (Multiplatform)01:11:09

It's our 50th episode, and we wanted to cover a classic game series that wasn't one of the major characters, so we chose Earthworm Jim!  We take close looks at the first two games in the series, and a glancing look at the regrettable 3D entry.

Next episode... Fishing?

If you want to skip straight to Jim talk, start off at 8:40!

29 Jul 2017Episode 51: Final Fantasy VIII (PlayStation)01:11:11

THIS ISN'T SUPER BLACK BASS!?  No, as Billy was unavailable this week, the Jeremy's instead delayed that episode and instead took this chance to talk about where Final Fantasy VIII went wrong.  We apologize in advance for a very negative episode about FFVIII, but we do go into detail about what specifically we don't like, and it's not just that the characters are hateable and the story is awful.

*** This episode is filled with spoilers, so if you haven't played FFVIII and really want to (we are sorry), then please skip this one. ***

Jeremy P has tried playing through this game many, many times, and most recently spent several weeks of 2017 getting to the very end of it before life forced him to throw in the towel.  Will he play it again?  What exactly doesn't he like about this game?

We also talk about the Atari Box, or wonder what exactly it is.

Next game -- Who knows?

14 Aug 2017Episode 52: Flashback (Genesis/SNES/3DO/etc)01:04:38

This week we again did not review a fishing game, but instead take on a multi-platform sci-fi action adventure game, Flashback.  The follow up game to Another World, Flashback merged PC adventure puzzle games and 2d action platformers, and wrapped it in a neat story that's part Total Recall, part They Live, part The Running Man-- really how could that go wrong?

Also discussed this week, the newest AtGames Sega Flashback unit.  Will this be as nice as more recent official retro system releases?

Next episode : Ok I mean it we're really doing Super Black Bass.

07 Aug 2015Episode 6 - Blackthorne (SNES)00:59:32
Better late than never (somewhat appropriate anyway for a retro gaming show), we cover the first Blizzard release (as Blizzard), Blackthorne.  We mostly focus on the SNES version, but also cover the PC and 32X releases.  32X?  Really? We also ramble for a while about achievements / trophies, and how much or how little we care about them. Please check out our website http://www.retrovania.net
19 Aug 2015Episode 7 - Keith Courage in Alpha Zones (TurboGrafx 16)00:47:38
We delve into the oft-overlooked 16-bit console, the TurboGrafx-16 this time, appropriately by looking at the original pack-in title, Keith Courage in Alpha Zones. Also discussed, what were our most regrettable classic console purchases, and how did we ever know what was good or not in the pre-internet days?   Really, how do we even know that now? For more coverage of this weeks game, check us out on Twitter (@retrovaniacs) where we will have not just the comic that came with the game but some sample Vines of gameplay!
04 Sep 2015Episode 8 - Gargoyle's Quest (Gameboy)00:53:26
We visit the original Nintendo handheld with a forgotten Capcom gem, Gargoyle's Quest. We also answer a listener question, "What is your gaming 'White Whale'?"  We also discuss Jeremy Gregory's Witcher 3 problem, whine about Wind Waker, and promo Hotline Miami, years after everyone else already agreed it was great.
16 Sep 2015Episode 9 - Mutant League Football (Genesis)00:42:45
Football season is here, and so we celebrate it the only way we know how -- by reviewing Mutant League Football for the Genesis. We also discuss one of our favorite systems of all time, the Sega Dreamcast, on it's 16th anniversary (of the US release).
30 May 2017Episode 48 : Wonder Boy III The Dragon’s Trap (Master System)01:09:42

(Edit 1/3/23 - This episode stopped loading, so we re-uploaded this one.  Hope it's not showing up as new in your feeds-- if so, sorry!)

This episode we take a look not only at the Sega Master System game Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap, but also discuss the recent remake for modern consoles.  How does the remake hold up, but more importantly, is this the sort of game that needed a remake at all?

We also answer a listener question, about if we have considered comparing all ports of a specific game or games, and we somehow talk about the Virtual Boy instead.

20 Mar 2022Episode 158 : Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time (PS2/Xbox/Gamecube)01:37:14

As requested by our Patron, Ben, we're taking a look at the first Ubisoft Prince of Persia Title, 2003's Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time!  We remember this game fondly as a best-selling rebirth of the Prince of Persia franchise, but does it hold up today?  We played it again to find out!

Also discussed, the upcoming TMNT collection, and if we think it's worth getting excited over (we do), and we answer another selection of listener mail.

05 May 2023Episode 180 : Bionic Commando (NES)01:13:21

As requested by patron Robert C. (find him at https://www.tiktok.com/@robertcarr75), we're taking a look at the NES version of Bionic Commando!  A completely different game than the arcade game of the same name, Capcom made this a full adventure with equippable items, minor puzzles, and a much longer mission - but did this game's awkward mechanical arm work well in lieu of jumping?  We're playing it again now to let you know if we think it did!

Also discussed, turning each other into retrogaming characters, fake video game OSTs, and our poor understanding of copyrights!

Welcome to D'OH-vember!  We're talking about a 16-bit entry in the Simpsons console game lineup, The Simpson's Bart's Nightmare! Originally released on SNES and Genesis, we all played the SNES version for this review. Bart has to complete a paper and waits until the last minute, and he falls asleep. We guide Bart through a series of dreamlike games to collect the pages of his paper to try and save his grade - and some of those games could even be fun.

Also covered, a block of listener mail, most of it about buffalo wings.

It's slightly late, but still out before the end of December -- it's our annual Christmas show!  This time, we couldn't hold off any longer.  After 7 years of Billy threatening to cover Home Alone, we're doing it.  We're talking the Home Alone video games for the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Genesis, Game Gear, Master System, and PC and even the Amiga!  Keep the change, ya filthy animals.

We also go through the remainder of our listener mail, to attempt to start 2022 with a clean slate. We cover it all, from retrogaming, to questions about relationships, to fast food choices, and we start a new terrible argument -- is gravy a sauce?

Last year we did a show about 4 classic (?) Atari 2600 games and we had a lot of fun, so this year we're doing it again.  This time it's only carts by Activision : River Raid, Frostbite, Seaquest, and Pressure Cooker! Our first Halloween episode of Retrovaniacs for 2024!  We're talking about Harvester for the PC, a point-and-click adventure game with an interesting twist both in story and in gameplay, a Patron Pick!  This 1996 adventure game tried to blend traditional adventure game puzzles with combat and a very adult storyline, and in some ways it succeeds -- but in others not so much.

Also covered, we preview what other spooky games we have been playing, discuss horror levels and spooky segments in non-horror games, and more as we answer more of your mail.

16 Apr 2020Episode 115 : Alpha Mission vs Star Force (NES)00:57:54

This time we tried something slightly different from the norm, instead of looking at one specific game, we are looking at two very similar top down shooters from the NES era, Alpha Mission (by SNK) and Star Force (by Tecmo).  Both of these arcade ports are ones that we had as kids -- both share the dubious honor of being a game we bought "because they were there" and as a result played them a lot.

We look at these two games specifically to answer a question : Is it better to be a game that tries to do a lot of interesting things but sort of fails, or a game that tries to do almost nothing and succeeds?

We also answer several listener questions about arcade ports, bonus show questions, and a listener feels we missed the mark on Starfox 2 a while ago.

It's another Patron requested episode, and we've been asked to cover the 1994 Genesis half-puzzle, half-platformer Beavis and Butt-head for the Sega Genesis.  Does one of the only games starring GWAR rule, or suck?  We played it and let you know our thoughts.

Also covered, games we think are overrated or often overlooked, general adventure game trends, and we unsurprisingly got a few questions sent our way about "Semen Grandpa" from last episode.  It gets worse.

This episode we take a look at an early SNES blend of action and strategy - Actraiser! Is this a game that successfully blends two gameplay styles into something great, or is this another example of two great tastes that should be eaten separately?

Also discussed: what arcade games we would buy if we could only buy one, licensed titles that missed the mark, and we got more food questions, so we get a little greasy for you yet again.

06 Feb 2024Episode 194 : Suikoden (PlayStation)01:30:13

We're covering another request - Suikoden for the PlayStation!  This game is a classic style JRPG that adds a large cast of playable characters, large scale battles, and an upgrade system that allows you to really modify your party in many ways.  This game led to a series that was prevalent on the PlayStation 1 and 2, but has faded out over the years, although there is an HD remaster on the way.  We played the original to see how this one holds up today!

Also discussed, new foods and games for 2024, memories of gaming with friends, and maybe the most devisive video game question we've answered -- Is Zelda an RPG?

We're doing another patron request, this time we're looking at The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy (aka Fantastic Dizzy) for the NES!  The Dizzy series was pretty big in Europe due to it's popularity on home computers, but in the US we didn't really get into it - but in 1991, Codemasters and Camerica made a big bet on Dizzy for the NES, building a new game that took the "Greatest Hits" of the previous Dizzy titles and bringing it to video game consoles.  We're all new to the world of the Yolkfolk, so we're taking a look at this action puzzler now!

24 Sep 2023Episode 187 : Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver01:16:50

We're digging into the sequel to Legacy of Kain, which takes the top-down evil Zelda style Playstation gane and turns it into a 3d evil Zelda style Playstation game - but is that transition a successful one?  Does it still have that Legacy of Kain feel, even though you aren't playing as Kain? This was a patron request, and at least one of us hadn't really played it before, so we did - and we're here to talk about it.

Also we take on some of your questions including one we cannot believe we haven't been asked before, "Is Birdo hot?".

30 Dec 2024Episode 212 : Action MAX, Captain Power, and the 2024 Mailbag Cleanout!01:47:46

It's our last show of 2024, and as tradition dictates we're going to clean out the mailbag to kick off the new year.  However, this year we're also taking on the Action MAX by Patron request, which was a videotape requiring home light gun console released in 1987.  We compared this system with another toy/game that was out the same time, Captain Power. This is a little different than our usual fare, but we think this ended up as an interesting look back on how companies were trying to complete with the NES at the time.

30 Nov 2021Episode 151 : Conker‘s Bad Fur Day (N64) / Conker Live and Reloaded (XBox)01:31:36

Our apparent love affair with Rare continues, as we look at another one of their offerings, Conker's Bad Fur Day. Originally released on the Nintendo 64, it was re-released later with some multiplayer addons for the XBox. Why would you play another cartoony looking 3d platformer? Maybe because this one, despite its looks, is clearly not for kids. Is that a good thing? We played it again to see!

The onslaught of listener mail continues, and we try to put a dent in it as well with some questions about remakes, gaming related violence, and honk honk honk honk.

Want to get right to the game?  Conker doesn't waste time, the game talk is right there at the start.

21 Jan 2025Episode 213 : Shadow Hearts (PS2)01:27:45

We're taking on another Patron request, this time on Shadow Hearts for the PlayStation 2! This RPG is a bit different from most turn-based RPGs, in that everything you do has some specific timing involved, the setting is a little out of the ordinary, and your main character can turn into different demons during the game. Is this a game worth checking out today? We played through it to give you our thoughts!

We also discuss our thoughts on the Switch 2 reveal, and attempt to stay current with our mailbag, answering questions about aliens, guitars, spam, and maybe even a game or two.

Monster Hunter guitar discussed -- https://www.fender.com/en-US/electric-guitars/telecaster/monster-hunter-rathalos-telecaster-rosewood-fingerboard-rathalos-red/5602600899.html

24 Feb 2020Episode 112 : Killer Instinct (SNES)01:28:37

Our second game for #FightMonth is a Rare created and Nintendo published fighter - Killer Instinct! All of us had played this one before, but hadn't revisited the original SNES version in quite a while.  Does this one hold up to the classics of the day?  We give you our thoughts, and Billy shares a couple stories about his youth and this game.

Also discussed this episode, a little too much coverage of the Resident Evil 2 remake, probably not enough time spent on the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and listener questions on game censorship, Urban Champion, and other fighting games we think tried something different and may not be remembered today.

Want to jump right to Killer Instinct?  Start at 13:40!

08 Dec 2020Episode 129 : Clash at Demonhead (NES)01:35:09

This episode we take on an NES game that has a rabid fanbase, and none of us had played it before to see why.  Recommended by Patron "John B", Clash at Demonhead is what we played, and we'll tell you all about it.

We also take on a batch of listener questions about our recent Mega Man 5 show, fighting games, newer retro-style games, and if there were any major series we hadn't tried.

This time we're taking on a Patron requested game for the NES, Xexyz.  This game blends action-platforming and shooting stages to tell the tale of Apollo and his quest to save the Queens of Xexyz from the evil Goruza empire. None of us had played this before, so we did and give you our opinion!

Also discussed-- one of us is publically admitting his backlog failures, and the recent Street Fighter announcements.  And of course -- mail!

28 Mar 2024Episode 196 : Super Adventure Island II (SNES)01:11:58

Another patron request, we're talking about Super Adventure Island II for the Super Nintendo! We have played New Adventure Island for the TG16 before for the show, and we had all played earlier Adventure Island games, so we assumed this was yet another standard platformer where you collect fruit and run from left to right-- and we were wrong! This is a true adventure game, with an overworld, inventory, and even some puzzle solving.  Listen as we discover a game all of us had overlooked before!

We revisit the shoot-em-up genre with a patron-requested episode all about Steel Empires for the Sega Genesis!  Is this just another bullet-hell shmup for die-hards, or is this a shoot-em-up that has a little more to offer for everyone? We let you know our thoughts.

Also discussed, Jeremy P gets into his most recent attempt at playing Metal Gear Solid 4, we talk about chicken sandwiches, difficulty settings in video games, and (of course), a Sax-o-beat.

16 Aug 2021Episode 144 :Spider-Man and Venom Maximum Carnage (SNES)01:29:12

This time we're taking another Patron request, and this time it's Planemech asking us to cover the Super Nintendo comic book brawler Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage!  Based on the comic book event of the same name, does this game hold up now, or like many super hero related games from the era does it just fall flat?  Listen to find out.

We also had a bunch more questions sent in from our listeners, and we answered them -- all your questions about arcade game preferences, bad memories that taint a gaming experience, what IS retro anyway, and more!

29 Jun 2022Episode 164: Super Mario 64 (N64) [take 2!]02:02:58

(Let's try this again, with all the audio this time...)

It took a Patron request, but we're covering one of the essential games for the Nintendo 64 library, the first 3D Mario game, Super Mario 64!  One of us hadn't played it before -- so how do they think it holds up?  Listen to find out.

Joining us this week is Celeste (of https://www.anotherzeldapodcast.com/ and a host of 1v1 on the Boss Rush Network), to help us find all 120 stars.

Also discussed, the first games we remember playing, Pokemon smashing, travel eating advice, and more!

21 Apr 2022Episode 160 : Sonic Adventure 2 (Dreamcast)01:28:37

In honor of the new Sonic movie sequel that is out now, we're looking back at another Sonic sequel, this time the 2001 Dreamcast outing Sonic Adventure 2!  Ditching the open world sections of the previous game, this is a more streamlined experience, but one where you only play Sonic maybe 1/6th of the time.  An interesting decision, but was it a good one?

Also discussed, the new Borderlands, gaming regrets, and we build our own mall!

Another Patron request, we're looking at Cheetos' Mascot Chester Cheetah ("It ain't easy bein cheesy") and his 2nd 16-bit console game, Chester Cheetah : Wild Wild Quest. We followed Chester on a platform adventure game across the country in search of the map to Hip City, and made some new friends and enemies along the way.

We also talked about boiled peanuts, game cheesing, and answered just a slightly late Valentine's Day question.

29 Aug 2024Episode 204 : WWF Betrayal (Game Boy Color)01:02:55

We're covering another wrestling game, sort of?  WWF Betrayal is actually a side scrolling beat em up for the Game Boy Color, featuring 4 of the biggest stars WWF had to offer in 2001.  This game was developed by WayForward, who make some of the nicest retro-styled games to this day.  Was this a good blend of a solid license and a great developer?

We also answer a question posed last episode about wrestler themed fast food meals, and some of your other pressing questions.

13 Apr 2021Episode 137 :Four Atari 2600 Games!01:39:33

We say we cover games from the start of home consoles on, but we haven't really done anything pre-NES... until now!  We're taking a look at 4 games from the Atari VCS library to talk about why these games may or may not be worth trying-- and in some cases we finally figure out what they were trying to do for the first time since playing them as kids.

We also take a bunch of listener questions about emotional video game memories, Kart racers we wish were made, the upcoming Vita/PS3 shop removal, and... Dragula.

Another game requested by our patrons, and this one comes from Patrick who wants us to talk about a bonafide classic game, Metal Gear Sold 3 : Snake Eater! We've covered the original Metal Gear Solid in the past and liked it, but many people regard this as the finest game in the series.  Do we think that's the case in 2024?  Listen to hear our thoughts!

As February nears an end, we have another Patron recommendation - Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain for the Playstation! The first game in a series that seems to have been put on the backburner, this game introduced us to the world of Nosgoth, and the origin of the vampire Kain.  How does this 2d action adventure game hold up today?  Listen for our thoughts.

Also discussed, the new iteration of Ghosts 'N Goblins, Triangle Strategy (or whatever it's called) and a few items mentioned on the most recent Nintendo Direct.  And of course, more listener mail.

Aye, matey! We're gathered here at the SCUMM Bar in Melee Island to talk about a graphic adventure requested by one of you Patrons - The Secret of Monkey Island! Ported to Sega CD, this was originally a PC game that put you in the shoes of unlikely pirate, Guybrush Threepwood, and follows his quest to become a pirate and in the process defeat the evil ghost pirate LeChuck! If you like classic point and click adventure games, this may be well worth looking into - we'll tell you why!

We also pilfered a bounty of listener questions to discuss soundtracks, VR wishes, a little bit of food as always, and as you would expect - Donkey Kong's doodads.

14 Jan 2020Episode 109 : Star Wars Bounty Hunter (PS2 / Gamecube)01:14:47

It's been a relatively Star Wars heavy few months, and we're going to pile right in on that with our look at 2002's tie-in game to Attack of the Clones, Star Wars : Bounty Hunter! This game attempts to explain why Jango Fett was chosen to be the source of the DNA for the clone army, and allows you to be one of the galaxy's most feared bounty hunters!  But, much like many Star Wars tie-in products over the years, is this game worth the republic credits?

We also take on several listener questions about our website, finding time for gaming, and dealing with a backlog of games!

This top-down action shooter let's you play with several different partners, or one of your friends, to blast your way through 9 stages of card-throwing, partner-tossing action! And we didn't want to talk about it alone, so we've asked Celeste (https://www.anotherzeldapodcast.com/ and a host of 1v1 on the Boss Rush Network -- where she previously interviewed us a while back : https://bossrush.net/2021/02/17/1v1-the-retrovaniacs/ ) to join us this week to give us her perspective!

Also discussed - Jeremy P has a new bad hobby, we have a conversation about TV "Very Special Episodes" that gets pretty dark, and we answer a Canadian's questions about guns.

Our 2nd Halloween episode for 2024, we're taking a look at Patron-requested Cold Fear!  This game came out right before Resident Evil 4, and maybe because of that it didn't really get as appreciated as it might have had it come out a year earlier. We played it again today to see if it's worth your time for a good scare!
