To kick off the R2E podcast for 2023 we have a special episode with our founder Nick St Louis. Nick was over from Canada at the end of last year for a few weeks and it gave our team a chance to get some great clarity on the vision for TFC and also just to play and connect in person after a few years apart.

One of the biggest take aways for us from the trip was the power of story and how crafting a new story for yourself is one of the major keys to having long-term sustainable change with your health and how collective stories are the driver of changes throughout culture.

And so what we want to do with TFC is really help people shift their story around their foot health, from being a victim of their genetics or circumstances to being an active participant on a journey towards foot freedom. In this episode we explore this concept and give guidance on how to navigate that journey - this is a narrative that we will continue to build on throughout the year and we’d love to hear your feedback on how it resonates with you.

They chatted to Dr. Rangan Cheterjee on the Feel Better, Live More podcast back in 2018. The trio discuss orthotics and the damaging effects of wearing narrow shoes which squash our feet and talk about how we can help restore our feet to their natural state.

Nick and Mike also explain how there are many ailments that a lot of us just write off as something that we just have, or that we’ve inherited, when in actual fact, there may be something we can do to improve these conditions. The truth is, that while we might have a genetic susceptibility, our environment and our lifestyles also determine what happens to our bodies.

It was a podcast just like this that first opened here eyes to the barefoot world before an ankle injury struck her down. Alison was in severe pain. Health professionals insisted she would have to ditch her natural footwear for good and rely on supportive shoes and technologies for the rest of her life. Alison wasn’t having it and her journey back from surgery is an inspiring example of what can be achieved with the right mindset and the support of practitioners who empower you along the way.

Mathieu is a high level parkour athlete and shares his story about how he found parkour and why he does it barefoot. We talked about risk perception and his process of approaching a challenge in parkour by breaking it down into individual parts and working through each component individually before piecing it all together in a final movement sequence. We finish off by talking about what parkour is to him and where beginners can start if they want to begin their own journey into parkour regardless of age or ability. This week we’re back with another Story From The Sole and this one is pretty special.

Amy Downes is a relatively new member of our community and has been on a pretty remarkable journey. The mother of two had been a nurse for 18 years before issues with her own health made her question her career and the system as a whole. Amy had also struggled with plantar fasciitis for years. She’d spent thousands of dollars on traditional approaches like orthotics and supportive footwear but had never been able to shake the pain and only left her feeling more alone and isolated.

It wasn’t until she started training barefoot and found her TFC tribe that she’s truely been able to take control of her foot health.

Amy’s journey since then has been nothing short of inspiring. She says over the past few months she has rediscovered how to play and her joy for movement and play, learnt how to listen to her body again and made life-changing connections with other humans online and in-person who are on the same journey.

Amy is the definition of a TFC Explorer.

Someone who is willing to ask questions and search for answers in her own pursuit of foot freedom and her story is one I think we could all learn a lot from.

This week we have a very special guest on the show, someone who has been a major influence on my perspective and my approach to movement personally and has really inspired a lot of the philosophy and practices that we promote here at TFC.

Katy Bowman is a Biomechanist and is the bestselling author of 9 books, including Move Your DNA, Whole-Body Barefoot, Grow Wild,  and her latest book Rethink Your Position which is actually due to launch tomorrow, Thursday 11th May. You can learn more about Katy's new book here.

Katy has been a leading voice in the movement movement for over a decade and has pioneered the concept of Nutritious Movement, which is the name of her education company and is just frankly an amazing analogy to help us frame how movement affects all aspects of our health on a deep level.

In fact one of our first episodes on this podcast was actually a whole episode dedicated to exploring the concept of movement nutrition and obviously draws on Katy’s work heavily, and so that podcast would pair very well with this one - so if you’re keen to check that out first or straight after, it is all the way down in Season 1 Episode 3.

But throughout this episode, we discuss the broader concept of biomechanics, we delve into the difference between posture and alignment and explore how the way we move can influence how we feel and contribute to our experience of pain and injury.

We also delve into some key topics from Katy’s new book to help you build more awareness around your own alignment, movement and mindset. There’s obviously a huge amount that we didn’t get to cover, as the book goes into a really impressive amount of detail while still being really accessible to read and having read it back to front myself I can very honestly highly recommend it.

He clocked up 1000 kilometres in 29 days on the Camino de santiago trek but by the time he finished his body was screaming at him.

He saw multiple podiatrists who all tried to prescribe him orthotics without any clear path to foot freedom.

Ray just wouldn’t have it so Ray did what Ray does and got researching.

That’s when he found The Foot Collective.

This week I chat to Melody Henderson from New York in the USA. 4 years ago Melody was struck down with a debilitating chronic illness, It affected every aspect of her daily life. She was afraid to leave her home and Doctors couldn’t work out what was wrong.

So through her own research, Melody decided to try a more natural approach. She changed her diet, fixed her sleep and started going barefoot and wearing natural footwear. Everything seemed to be improving until she injured her achilles.

It was too much too soon for her foundation and so began Melody’s journey to foot freedom. This was a really inspiring chat and I can’t wait for you to all hear how Melody is going now!

This week I speak with Dr. Ray McClanahan. Ray is an awesome human, a personal friend and I consider him to be one of the few OG’s that have been spreading the truth about foot health for over 2 decades.

Ray is a practicing doctor of podiatric medicine and also the inventor of Correct Toes. We begin with Ray sharing the story of how he came to do the work he does today.

Rays journey of transformation from treating symptoms to empowering patients with education is really inspiring and Ray tells the story really well.

We talk about an article he’s super intrigued by that sheds new light on the relationship between footwear shape, blood flow and plantar fasciosis which you can check out here.

We discuss his upcoming invitation to be a keynote speaker at the podiatric medicine annual conference, the seeming readiness of his profession to evolve how they treat, the books he’s writing and the idea of an annual foot summit that unites team foot health from around the world in person to share ideas and collaborate on education content to spread truth.

This week Jim and Mac explore the concept of the 'Cave of Comfort' which is an element of this new story that we’ve been crafting around the Journey to Foot Freedom. The basic premise is that most people are essentially reading from the wrong map, which means that even despite a lot of investment of time, money and energy, they can’t effectively progress towards true foot freedom and tend to end up further down this metaphorical cave of comfort.

So throughout this episode we talk through the evolutionary basis of comfort and why we naturally tend to seek comfort, we discuss the importance of exposure to discomfort to promote resilience and growth as well as the value of having a community of people around you who are on the same journey and can either inspire and guide you or who can be inspired and guided by you.

We recorded this episode earlier in the year while we were out bush doing some filming - we had a rainy morning so we sat by the fire and recorded this conversation, so just to note that you will hear a bit of that white noise in the background, but the rest of the audio should be clear. This week is a special episode that was recorded on our recent trip to Clearwater in Florida where we hung out with Ben Patrick (aka Knees Over Toes Guy) and his team at the ATG headquarters. We had an epic time experiencing the ATG method firsthand, followed by recording this podcast and then running our Playshop there the next day.

This episode was actually recorded for the ATG podcast, so it’s essentially Ben Patrick and Derek Williams interviewing Nick and Jim all about our approach to feet, footwear and training so in that sense it’s a great overview of what we’re all about at TFC.

For anyone interested more in the ATG approach, we actually had Ben on our podcast a few years back, where he shares his story and approach to lower body training - obviously his personal focus is mostly on the knees due to his previous injury history but the ATG system is a really great holistic training methodology that can be amazing for lower body and whole body movement health so we definitely recommend checking out that episode as well as The ATG podcast itself and Ben’s YouTube channel The Knees Over Toes Guy if you’re keen to learn more - we also will be featured in a YouTube video on there over the next week or so, so you can stay tuned for that.

This week’s Story From The Sole comes from Mishelle Boniface, a reflexologist and mother from the UK. Mishelle found The Foot Collective after reaching a pivotal point in her life that forced her to seriously consider her health.

As someone who already worked with feet for a living she immediately resonated with our mission but her journey over the past year has been truely transformational. Mishelle has become a true foot nerd, embracing every aspect of TFC’s philosophies and passing what she’s been learning onto her two young boys.

She ditched her unnatural footwear, embraced ground living in her home and even traded her bed for a mattress on the floor to bring her closer to the earth and reconnect her with a more natural lifestyle. While these may seem like extreme moves for some, Mishelle believe these changes have helped her rediscover a love for her body.

As someone who has suffered chronic back pain for more than two decades, she believes these simple lifestyle and mindset tweaks along with a playful approach to movement have helped her finally start to see improvements. In this chat we discuss all of the above plus how she’s empowering her own kids to make choices about their health and the benefits its had for their family as a whole.

This is the first in a series of podcasts that we recorded while we were on tour in the US, where we were having a lot of deep discussions about the evolution of TFC, our current philosophy and approach as well as where we’re heading in the future - and so these podcasts are our attempt to distill all of that into a digestible conversation that you can tune into.

We figured, what better place to start than with our core values which essentially guide everything that we do and also bind us together both as a team within our company and as a broader collective. We’ve been delving into the meaning of these values for the best part of a year since we identified them in November 2022 and have realised how deep each topic can go as well as how interrelated they all are.

So this is our first attempt at communicating that officially and somewhat concisely which was a really helpful process for us to go through and we hope that you find value in the discussion as well - we’d love to hear your feedback on what resonated with you and any questions you might have about the concepts so that we can elaborate in future episodes.

This week Nick, Mac and I explore the Evolution of our training philosophy and approach over the years, from where Nick started in his physio practice all the way through to our latest SoleMate training systems. Along the way we discuss the Protect - Correct - Develop framework, the integration of hardware and software, the concept of Restore to Explore as well as, of course, the importance of play-based training for building a more adaptable and resilient body and mind.

Towards the end we discuss the Seven Days of Play challenge, which we’ve actually decided to call the Play Is The Way challenge, but it does start with seven consecutive days exploring one of our beginner SoleMate Sessions each day. We have also created a Proof of Play log that will guide you every step of the way and help you track your progress. The idea is that you start with the seven days in a row, get hooked on the process and the progress and continue this as a daily habit.

We already have a bunch of legends leading the way with this challenge and supporting each other but of course the more the merrier so if you’re keen to get involved the next step is to join the community (we’ll put a link in the show notes) and download your Proof of Play log.

This week I have the honour of interviewing Zach Bush. We kick off the conversation by talking about Zach's current work and the projects he’s currently working on.

We speak a bit about regenerative agriculture and what insights it might offer with regard to a regenerative health approach.

We also chat about the value of kids spending time in nature, the meaning of truth and community, natural as a decentralized health network, the importance of soil health, the flaws of centralized medicine and the opportunities that companies have in the years ahead to be part of the solution, not the problem.

We talk about the sad reality that doctors and farmers are struggling within a paradigm dominated by chemicals and the potential that can be unlocked for human healing if we reconnect with the natural world and restore biodiversity in our soil, ecosystems and in our communities.

Zach finishes by sharing his definition of health which he was able to condense into 3 powerful words which I really appreciated.

Triumph Over Adversity: Welcoming Tim Schultz, MMA Warrior and Survivor, as our first official TFC Athlete.

Tim’s story is as harrowing as it is inspiring. The Australian MMA fighter, on the brink of a big break in the UFC, faced an unimaginable challenge. After a in-grown toe nail in Thailand turned life-threatening due to a flesh-eating infection, Tim's battle transcended the ring. It became a fight for his leg, his career, and indeed, his life. From a critical condition in a Thai hospital to an emergency flight back to Brisbane, Tim's journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster.

Despite the odds, he's battled through, showing the heart of a true fighter. Grappling with the end of his fighting career and an intense battle for his mental and physical health, Tim's resilience has been a beacon of hope and strength and now, we are beyond proud to announce that Tim Schultz is joining The Foot Collective as our first TFC Athlete Ambassador.

His journey, marked by incredible resilience and determination, embodies the very spirit of what we stand for at TFC. As Tim steps into this new role as a coach promoting foot function for optimal performance, he brings with him not just his experience as an elite athlete but his insights from a life-changing ordeal.

His story is a powerful reminder of the fragility of our health and the strength of the human spirit and you can hear it in full now on the Restore To Explore Podcast.
