21 Oct 2021EP105: Was I In A Cult?00:45:05

Allison begins her series on "Belonging" with a provocative question: Am I In A Cult? Allison is joined by the hosts of the runaway podcast sensation by the same name. Tyler Measom and Liz Iacuzzi are to discuss the podcast, share their thoughts on cults and get real about this taboo subject.

We probably believe that this would never happen to us. We wont get fooled by slick talk, group-think mentality, controlling tactics and whacky behaviors. But the research says something different. Many people who join "cults" are Type-A, of higher intelligence and high achievers. The truth is cults are everywhere and are often right in front of our eyes. Diet fads, charismatic churches, gyms, self-help groups, therapy philosophies and populist politicians are all prime breeding grounds for cults. This is an episode you do not want to miss!

EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Why are cults so fascinating
  • Do "socially acceptable cults" exist?
  • Characteristics of a cult leader
  • Cultic behaviour
  • What type of person joins a cult?
  • Difference between an organization/movement/group and a cult
  • Love bombing & manipulation
  • A podcast with the blend of trauma and humor
  • The shame of making poor decisions

12 Jan 2021EP89: Is There Hope For The Left and Right? Esther Joy King00:59:15

With the 2020 election guaranteeing a full bonanza of chaos, will Thanksgiving dinners be safe again? Left-leaning host, Allison Hare interviews Republican Esther Joy King running for US Congress representing the 17th district of Illinois. Esther served in the US military, was an aid in Afghanistan, an entrepreneur, and an attorney – and has a fascinating background. The conversation took an unexpected turn and we worked through a difference of perception in real-time. It was both exhausting and liberating – and hopeful. Keypoints:

  • Challenge your own way of thinking and see you  can perceive something from an opposite point of view, just to double check what you believe and just to soul search about it.
  • Elections should be about who’s going to give better representation, and not political parties.
  • Politics is often reflective of our worldview

Quotes:

–“Politics are contentious, but everybody wants better” – Esther Joy King -“I’m trying to be responsible myself, but it’s a daily accountability.” – Esther Joy King -“ I don’t think it is a good idea to not talk about politics or religion or money. And I think that because we have not talked about it is why we are having so many problems” – Allison Hare

So much goes into a GREAT interview.  And it truly is an art and interviewing is an important life skill that can cross into every area of your life.  This requires sharpening your own emotional intelligence in the process.  There’s no such thing as a perfect interviewer.  The best news is that you are always continuously evolving and improving.

As someone who interviews people not only for this podcast but also unsuspecting strangers by nature, I’ve noticed some cardinal mistakes people make that instantly turn the listener off when I listen to other podcasts - and also some small tweaks that can make your podcast interview so irresistible that your listeners will be posting it, sharing it, and sending it to all their friends.

18 Aug 2020EP74: Jeanine Wright Interview: How To Launch and Grow Your Podcast with COO of Simplecast00:39:10

Host Allison Hare sits down with the Chief Operating Officer, Lawyer, and one of the first investors of her favorite podcast platform, Simplecast, none other than Jeanine Wright.

(If you are a podcaster and podcast want to be, hear what she has to say about Simplecast, a platform you might use.)

This makes Jeanine Wright a great trifecta of an image of an empowered woman in the industry of tech or tech investments. Given that there's not so much attention and investment is given to women. In Silicon Valley, only 2% of women are being invested.

But how did Simplecast started?

Jeanine will share her story from being a talent-side entertainment and media attorney half a dozen years to being an angel investor in tech and eventually meeting the CEO of Simplecast, Brad.

01 Feb 2024Rethinking Perfectionism: what kind are you? Katherine Morgan Schafler01:12:18

Where are my fellow control freaks?

Such an interesting and way more helpful perspective to rethink and redefine perfectionism. You know when you read a book and it’s so groundbreaking and helpful, you can’t help but tell all your friends, post about it? Well, I was the recipient of essentially being attacked on all sides that I needed to read this award-winning book, The Perfectionists’ Guide to Losing Control by Katherine Morgan Schafler. Katherine is a seasoned psychotherapist and former in-house therapist for Google, with a BA in psychology from Berkeley and 2 masters from Columbia University and I’ve got her incredibly refreshing and game-changing approach broken down today. We talk about self-punishment vs. discipline. We talk about adaptive and maladaptive perfectionism and why restoration and resting feels like failure to perfectionists - and my favorite, control vs. power. I really am super excited for you to hear it and can't wait to hear what type of perfectionist are you!

28 Jul 2020EP71: Top Mistakes New Podcasters Make and How To Avoid Them00:26:07

Starting a podcast can feel overwhelming.  You’re probably thinking is the market oversaturated? Will my podcast even make a dent? There’s probably a little imposter syndrome creeping in thinking, who am I to throw my hat in the ring?

There are about 1.2 Million podcasts out there but only about 50% of them are considered active.***

Why is that?

I actually feel like these statistics are encouraging for a few reasons. A lot of people throw podcasts out there without giving a few key areas some much needed consideration. I promise you - these mistakes are why there are so many shows in the podcast graveyard.

But not yours!  This is your passion.  Your voice.  Your message.  Your stories.  You are going to make it great!

Please listen, comment, share.

14 Mar 2024To cut or not to cut: Plastic surgery and culture with Dr. Louis DeJoseph00:33:40

What do you do when you look in the mirror and gravity has stricken your once very youthful high and tight face? Not gonna lie - it’s a beeeyach. It can really mess with you. And it’s no secret that our society for centuries and centuries has put premium value on youth as a moral imperative to beauty. And wherever you may stand on plastic surgery, fillers, injections - it can also make a world of positive difference when done right and for the right reasons. So the question is - to cut or not to cut - and today, I got one of my favorite people ever on the podcast to unpack some of the beauty trends, understanding when it makes sense for surgery or less invasive options, what are some of the less effective trends that have really good marketing, how to find the right surgeon for you, and social commentary. If you aren't struggling with this, you may be the 9th wonder of the universe and need to bottle up whatever you've got and sell it!

My guest today is Tallia Deljou. She is a positive psychology expert and transformational life coach helping people connect their power and purpose. 23 May 2024Why High Performers Struggle with Relationships with Jason VanRuler00:36:19

Why do high performers seem to struggle with their personal relationships? Our guest today is Jason VanRuler, a licensed therapist and author of "Get Past Your Past." Jason provides eye-opening insights into why high performers often struggle with personal relationships. He explains that while high performers excel in business by applying certain success strategies, these same strategies can fail in personal relationships. Jason emphasizes the importance of vulnerability, identifying safe people, isolation vs. self-isolation, and the need for intentional and consistent relationships (and grieving the ones that no longer fit).

We discuss the concept of "max awareness" in therapy, where people are more aware of their issues but often fail to take actionable steps to improve their relationships.

Such an interesting and way more helpful perspective to rethink and redefine perfectionism. 04 Jul 20244th of July SPECIAL: America, you in danger, girl00:37:52

America, you in danger, girl! In this special 4th of July episode of the Late Learner Podcast, I take on the big issues around our freedoms in the U.S., especially with recent political events and Supreme Court rulings. I start with a look at the meaning of Independence Day and the freedoms our ancestors fought for, but also voice my worries about the current state of our liberties.

We revisit a fiery discussion from when Roe v. Wade was overturned, stressing the need for action over just expressing outrage. I break down four key steps to make an impact: energizing people, getting deeply organized, having a detailed plan, and gathering resources. Many organizations like Planned Parenthood and Emily's List are already on this, and I urge listeners to support them.

I also share personal stories about my own political activism, the importance of turning anger into action, and staying engaged. I offer ten practical ways to get involved, from helping reproductive justice organizations, opening your home to those in need, normalizing conversations about abortion, and supporting pro-choice candidates.

Happy 4th of July!

02 Jan 2025Tradwife Phenomenon and the Relaunch of Reinvention Room00:37:13

Reinvention Room is launched with a whole new twist!!! This episode is a juicy one. I’m breaking down the Tradwife phenomenon—a throwback to 1950s-style homemaking in today’s modern world. If you’ve ever stumbled across an Instagram account like Ballerina Farm or found yourself questioning the aesthetics, values, and privilege behind these curated lives, you’re in for a treat.

I dive into what Tradwives are, why they’re so polarizing, and what makes them both fascinating and frustrating. From the allure of simplicity to the backlash from feminists, I’m unpacking why this cultural moment lights up so many debates. Are Tradwives just living their best lives, or are they masking privilege and systemic inequities? And, most importantly, how does this trend reflect where we are as women in 2025?

I’ll share my personal reactions (spoiler: I’m not moving to a farm anytime soon) and highlight key players like Ballerina Farm and other tradwife influencers. We’ll also explore whether this movement is truly about choice—or if it’s an MLM-esque path back to traditional gender roles.

Notable Timestamps:

  • 0:00-2:15: Welcome to The Reinvention Room relaunch! Why we’re talking about Tradwives.
  • 2:16-10:30: My journey to this podcast name and why reinvention is central to this conversation.
  • 10:31-18:45: What the heck is a Tradwife? Let’s define it and break it down.
  • 18:46-27:00: Meet Ballerina Farm—aesthetic goals or a recipe for rage?
  • 27:01-33:20: The feminist critique, the conservative dream, and everything in between.
  • 33:21-41:10: The behind-the-scenes hustle of tradwife content creators. Are they even “traditional”?
  • 41:11-49:00: Is the tradwife movement just an MLM in disguise?
  • 49:01-53:30: My closing thoughts: Why this trend makes us feel all the feelings.

03 Oct 2024The Substance: The shocking horror of Aging00:29:32

Taking a decidedly hard left pivot to do a cultural deep dive into the new buzzy movie that everyone is talking about, The Substance starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid, and co-produced, written and directed by Coralie Fargeat. Shockingly insane, it was like nothing I ever expected and I"m not sure if I recovered.

But despite the terrifying visuals and sound design, the message was pretty relevant and thought-provoking.

08 Jun 2023I'm hurting00:50:34

I wasn't going to even record this episode - it was waaaay too personal. But something in my gut said "do it." The truth will set you free. My relentless efforts to produce perfect, clear, concise content gave way to shining a light on my personal life that I couldn't ignore and must address.

So here goes nothing. I may NEVER do this again. But an important message: check on your strong friends - they have trouble asking for help when they are hurting.

  • [00:00:44] Public Speaking Anxiety.
  • [00:05:15] Solitude and mood improvement.
  • [00:09:10] Abandonment in content creation.
  • [00:14:05] Rebranding a podcast.
  • [00:18:47] Outgrowing your container.
  • [00:26:52] Aging and Perfectionism.
  • [00:33:33] Check on your strong friends.

07 Jul 2020EP68: BLM Series: Courageous Leadership and Boldly Challenging the Status Quo for Progress: Yendelela Neely Holston00:55:11

Host Allison Hare talks to Yendelela Neely Holston, a Cum Laude graduate of Duke University School of Law and the Partner and Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer at Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton. Yendelela Neely Holston talks about her open letter responding to OK Cafe owner Susan DeRose’s stance on Black Lives Matter. OK Cafe is a 50-year-old Atlanta institution, along with Blue Ridge Grill and Bone’s Steakhouse. During a peaceful Black Lives Matter march that was going past OK Cafe, a few weeks ago in response, there was a huge banner that stated, ‘Lives That Matter Are Made With Positive Purpose. The backlash to the owners putting up this cryptic banner was immediate.

Episode Highlights:

  • Allison Hare introduces Yendelela Neely Holston.
  • Allison started a course called Press Play Podcast.
  • What prompted Yendelela Neely Holston to write her letter?
  • What has the response been like to her letter?
  • What is her call to action for people that are going to continue to stand up for black lives?
  • Has there been a shift towards radical empathy?
  • Why are people fighting so hard for the status quo?
  • Why did Yendelela Neely Holston get involved in a career in law?
  • What is her ultimate goal as a diversity officer?
  • What does she know that she wishes other people knew?
  • What is next for Yendelela Neely Holston?
  • How does she feel after having written her letter?

3 Key Points

  1. Anti-racism is the key to confront racism.
  2. People don’t have to be white to be racist. Perpetuating racism makes someone racist.
  3. Yendelela Neely Holston started a pipeline program for law school readiness for historically underrepresented individuals on two coasts with two of her firm's largest clients.

Tweetable Quotes:

  • “Not doing something that is overtly racist is not enough, because we all function and live within a racist society. So, doing nothing, you are perpetuating racism. Period. Unless you are actively working against it, you are perpetuating it.” –Yendelela Neely Holston
  • “I think that’s how we continue to not address things over history is that we reframe them in ways that are convenient and minimize what the real issue is.” –Yendelela Neely Holston
  • (Systemic racism) “It is not a lack of intellectual horsepower. It is not a lack of ability. It is because you're just spending so much time how this works. You don’t have a cousin or an uncle or family friend to call and help navigate through.” –Yendelela Neely Holston
