I came across Sara's new lifestyle as she started popping up against various exotic backdrops in my LinkedIn feed. Although I now live in a beautiful part of the world with my young family and I'm also enjoying some more stability and focus, I do miss the adventures of days gone by. Sara's experience is also an interesting one as she is not just travelling with her husband but also working with him. Listen in to hear how they manage this...! In today's episode, Anna looks at how you can feel more confident in what you do and how you market yourself as a business owner. Isn't it ironic that when you come out of school and university, you're brimming with confidence, having no experience whatsoever and very few skills, and you think you're the best thing that could happen to any company in the world... Then 10, 15 years later or more, you lose that confidence and you think, "Am I really good enough?" This week, we're exploring how you can develop confidence in who you are and what you do - in particular when you're transitioning out of the corporate world and into working for yourself.

09 Aug 2021 | RS142 - The 8/8/8 rule and its alternatives | 00:12:47
In this week’s podcast, Anna looks at the ‘8/8/8’ model of work-life balance and encourages you to explore the alternatives. When it comes to work-life balance, an ideal split of 8/8/8 has been proposed: 8 hours of work, 8 hours of leisure, 8 hours of sleep. 23 Jul 2020 | RS87 - How to self-promote | 00:15:30
In today's episode, Anna looks at creating and sharing content that will demonstrate how good you are - without being arrogant or sleazy. Unfortunately, putting your head down and doing a good job isn't necessarily enough to get you noticed. I think we've grown up in a society where we're told to be humble, we shouldn't blow our own trumpet, and it's frowned upon if you stick your head above everyone else. So you need to find a way to promote yourself - without feeling like you're being too arrogant or braggy.

01 Jan 2024 | RS270 - Success is Personal | 00:11:31
With the dawn of the new year, Anna takes us on a reflective journey, encouraging us to ponder the question: What is success for you? Drawing on the dictionary definition of success and the poignant insights of a palliative care nurse, Anna explores the dangers of not defining our own success and the importance of setting our own destination in life. Using the analogy of sailing and treasure hunting, she discusses the significance of having a map and checkpoints, and the value of being present and in the right path. This thought-provoking episode encourages listeners to reflect on their aims and purpose, not only in their professional lives but also in their personal endeavors, prompting us to consider what our own treasure and checkpoints might look like. 20 Dec 2018 | RS4 – Set yourself up for success | 00:20:50
Anna shares her journey to her most successful year to date and invites you to set yourself up for success from day one in 2019. (6:03) “I share all this to demonstrate that this has been a process of self-discovery, of trying different things, and of getting the help I needed to set myself up for success. So there’s no magic here, I’m no guru, I don’t have some incredible formula that makes all this work.” (12:39) “All in all, I feel incredibly proud and satisfied with everything I’ve achieved this year. And the contrast is really stark versus where I was a couple of years ago.” (15:58) “It’s not rocket science! But it takes time and reflection to come up with those goals that are truly meaningful; discipline and putting aside your ego so that you can keep putting in the effort, even when you’re not seeing immediate results; and finding the right person to guide you and support you through the process.” *Resources mentioned during the episode* Reimagining Success in 2019 – A free workshop to help you review 2018 and plan for 2019 in the 5Ls areas of your life www.onestepoutside.com/2019 Reimagining Success in Your Business in 2019 – A free workshop to help you with your annual business review of 2018 and business plan for 2019 www.onestepoutside.com/2019biz Setting yourself up for success in 2019 – An invitation to set yourself up for success in 2019 with a bespoke coaching package that will give you a clear vision and specific goals and action steps www.onestepoutside.com/2019success *If you like what you hear, then make sure that you subscribe to the podcast so that you never miss an episode!* This is all about you, so Anna will be asking you for input, questions, feedback to help her create content that answers your needs and helps you with whatever you’re working on at the moment. 09 Jan 2020 | RS59 - Planning next year in business | 00:19:23
Anna looks at how to review your business results from 2019 and plan for the new year 2020. Doing an annual review is important, first of all, for setting goals in the first place, and then for checking in to see whether or not you've achieved them. If you haven't, then you can either adjust your goals to be more realistic, or you can adjust the actions you're taking and either step things up or change the strategy when it's not working at all. A second important part of doing this annual review is taking a moment to celebrate how far you've come! It's so easy to be constantly moving onto the next thing and forgetting that just last year you would have been thrilled to be where you are now.

09 Jul 2020 | RS85 - Business visibility | 00:16:48
In today's episode, Anna looks at the biggest mistake entrepreneurs make when it comes to visibility for their business. It's easy to feel like you *should* be visible, because that's what everyone tells you - you *should* be on all the social media channels, sharing content left right and centre, all day every day. And if that's the case, it's no wonder that you're finding yourself procrastinating and reluctant to stick to a schedule or even getting started at all! Connecting with your own bigger purpose, getting clear on your business objectives and then devising a marketing strategy that's going to get you in front of the right people, at the right time, in a way that will feel comfortable and authentic to you - now, that's where the magic happens. *Resources mentioned during the episode*

In today’s episode, Anna looks at these five aspects once you come to the point of getting back to work and managing your business with a baby.
(4:37) “Once you have the boundaries clearly defined, you have to actually stick to them that where we get into a bit of trouble I think! That means doing things like closing the door to your home office, shutting down your laptop or turning off the notifications on your phone when you’re not ‘supposed to’ be working. It also means learning to say “no” to professional projects and clients that conflict with your priorities and working times.”

(5:15) “Before even getting to the numbers themselves, you really have to start with your mind-set. A lot of us have money ‘stories’ that we’ve developed over the years, inherited from our parents and from our personal experiences from school, TV, whatever. Maybe your parents argued about money when you were growing up, or it was a taboo subject that no one talked about… As a result, you have a lot of beliefs on the topic of money, beliefs that can hold you back when it comes to running your business successfully.”

05 Nov 2020 | RS102 - How to start a side hustle | 00:17:05
In today's episode, Anna looks at how you can make time for a side hustle while in a full-time job. The idea of a side hustle is one that has really taken off in the last couple of years. It’s a way of creating an additional revenue stream alongside an existing job and, more than that, it can allow you to pursue a passion, learn new skills, and reinvigorate your career. But how on earth can you make time for a side hustle when every hour in your life is already accounted for?

15 Apr 2021 | RS125 - Choosing the right business model | 00:20:13
In today's episode, Anna looks at questions you can ask yourself in order to choose a business model that works for you. When deciding on a business model, any expert or online resource from a quick Google is going to tell you that you need to look at things like market potential, the right revenue model, your value proposition, what problem are you solving, your competitive landscape, and so on. But aside from the financials of the business, your business model also needs to work FOR YOU. So we're looking at some of the questions you need to ask yourself in order to choose the model that's going to work for your personal situation and preferences and the kind of business that you want to run. *Resources mentioned during the episode*

29 Oct 2020 | RS101 - Starting a side hustle business | 00:18:43
In today's episode, Anna looks at that eternal question that continues to rage, as to whether you should take the 'sensible' option of starting a business alongside your job, as a side hustle, or you should quit your job and go 'all in' with your business. In a nutshell, a side hustle is simply “a secondary job that brings in extra cash”. The benefits are obvious: it’s the extra cash and, by extension, the diversification of your income, as well as the potential to grow to replace your income entirely. More than ‘just’ a part-time job, though, a side hustle is about creating assets that create an opportunity to earn more passive income, rather than simply trading your time for money. Continuing in your corporate job while working on your business as a side hustle allows you to keep the security of a steady income while you build your business alongside your current work. You can validate your idea, find out if you really do enjoy working for yourself and start building a client base before you become 100% reliant on the new business as your main income stream. Tune into this week's podcast episode as I discuss the pros and cons of starting a side hustle versus going 'all in' with your business.

28 Jan 2021 | RS114 - Revisit your goals | 00:16:22

17 Dec 2020 | RS108 - The wrong career choice | 00:13:16
In today's episode, Anna looks at what happens when your ladder is leaning against the wrong wall and all that climbing ends up being a frustrating waste of time... “If the ladder is not leaning against the right wall, every step we take just gets us to the wrong place faster.” - Stephen Covey This is a quote that I came across, and it's variably attributed in its different versions to Stephen Covey, the legendary leadership guru who of course wrote The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, Highly Effective Leaders, or the American monk, Thomas Merton. The idea is that a lot of us will spend many years, decades, climbing that ladder, working hard, trying to reach the top, only to find that if and when we do reach that top, the view isn't quite what we expected. We've climbed the wrong ladder and we're not where we want to be. And that, of course, is a pretty frustrating, regretful situation to find ourselves in… *Resources mentioned during the episode*

12 Mar 2020 | RS68 - How to be more disciplined in life | 00:21:49
In today's episode, Anna explores the challenge of managing the battle between your present and future self. The best way to be more disciplined - or, in fact, not need to be more disciplined - is to create a habit. Now, of course, when you try to implement new priorities, new routines, there will always be some resistance, and will take time to make it into an unquestionable habit. But once you do that, it's easy!

10 Dec 2020 | RS107 - What are you trying to achieve? | 00:15:34
In today's episode, Anna asks: What is The Dream? What does that actually look like? Again and again, I see people and I see clients coming to me and they're getting all caught up in, "Oh, I couldn't possibly do this,” or, "I'm getting stuck… How do I do xyz? How am I ever going to achieve this?" Before they really know, before you really know: WHAT are you trying to achieve? What is the dream? And the question is, "What if it all works out?" So I want to give you permission this week - not that I need to give you permission, you can always do this, but perhaps at least a reminder - to ask yourself those “what if?” questions. I know it can seem naive and perhaps your partner, your friends, your family, and others - not to mention you yourself - will say, “You're being too idealistic!” There's no point in dreaming big, right? Because you have to pay the mortgage, take care of the kids, etc etc. and I've got the children... Okay, fine. We can, and must, and will look at the practical considerations… but what's the point of all of that if we're not allowing ourselves to dream, to imagine? What if it all works out?

(4:30) “So why do I think that running your own business is the best thing for this freedom? Well, by definition it gives you the freedom because you are now your own boss, you are literally the CEO of your business, your career and your life which you should be anyways. And you get to decide exactly what your business will be like, what your business model will be, what your brand is going stand for, which kind of clients you’re going to work with, what projects you will and won’t take on, how you will and won’t do the work.” (6:56) “Flexibility means being able to control your working hours and work mainly more, take on more projects or take on less projects depending on your wants and needs, at that time, maybe you have lots of spare time and energy, enthusiasm, you need the money so you want to take on more work and then other times you want to take a step back so you can say no to projects.” (10:24) “Finding fulfilment in our work gives us that sense of purpose and direction, a reason for getting out of bed in the morning. It makes the challenges seem less and we talked about the reality of running your business last week again and they become less important again as we can see the bigger picture of the difference that we’re making in the world the impact we are having, and somehow that gives us more energy and drive, however demanding the work may be.” *Resources mentioned during the episode* Book a call to discuss the best fit for you – Apply for a free 30-minute consultation call where you can ask all your questions and find out how Anna can best support you, whether in your personal or your professional goals. www.onestepoutside.com/claritycall *If you like what you hear, then make sure that you subscribe to the podcast so that you never miss an episode!* This is all about you, so Anna will be asking you for input, questions, feedback to help her create content that answers your needs and helps you with whatever you’re working on at the moment. 25 Feb 2021 | RS118 - Doing the same thing over again and expecting different results | 00:19:52
In today's episode, Anna looks at the trap of doing the same things again, and again, and again, and expecting different results? Insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting the same results - and yet that's what a lot of us are doing in business. And in life! We're hustling away, busy, busy, busy - but we're not making the shifts we need to make, in mindset and in behaviour, in order to get where we want to be. Now, if you're already happy with where you are and you just want to be comfortable and consistent, then those habits that you have are just the ticket. But if you're looking to level up in your business, to grow, to become a go-to expert and real thought leader in your field... well, that's going to require you to be and do things differently. *Resources mentioned during the episode*

04 Mar 2021 | RS119 - Living life on autopilot | 00:19:04
In today's episode, Anna looks at the mental shortcuts and habits that can get in the way of you making the changes you want to make and getting the results you want in your business. Living your life in automatic mode can be helpful to save time and energy when you're doing certain repetitive tasks that don't require you to think or to decide what it is you need to do or how to do it. That automatic mode is less helpful, however, when you're trying to make a change, do things differently and get different results. Bringing your awareness to what's going on is a good first step, and then asking yourself whether what you're doing is actually getting you to where you want to be.

In this week’s podcast episode, Anna looks at the term ‘lifestyle business’. A lifestyle business is often pitted against a ‘real’ start-up or small business. 21 Feb 2019 | RS13 – Personal brand content strategy | 00:16:14
Anna looks at why and how you should create content that will build your personal brand. (5:34) “In today’s market, which is very cluttered – in particular coaching, consulting, copywriting, graphic design, there are so many people running their own business now… There is a more savvy, empowered consumer who is looking for businesses they trust, where they feel that they share the core values with that business, or with the person running the business, and they really know and like you to the point where they want to work with you and give you their money.” (7:08) “As ever, you need to define success. You need to start by defining what you’re trying to achieve. Are you looking to establish credibility in a new industry or field, to create a platform for speaking engagements or consulting and freelancing projects? Maybe you’re really passionate about this mission that you have, this greater purpose, and you want to engage more people in a common mission, you want to create a community of people working towards a common vision? Or maybe it’s about building a pipeline of prospects who you will nurture relationships with as you move them through the funnel towards becoming a client?” (9:18) “It can be a bit overwhelming when you look at all the things you ‘should’ be doing and everything you’d like to improve. There are so many social media channels now to play with, you’re ‘supposed to’ be doing blogs and podcasts and videos and all sorts, and it’s easy to get lost in all of that and to end up doing nothing particularly efficiently.” Next week, we’ll be looking at how you can get started creating content that will build your personal brand. 27 Dec 2018 | RS5 – Kickstart my business | 00:16:01
Anna talks about her belief that running your own business is the best route to freedom, flexibility and fulfilment, and how you can kick-start your business in 2019. (2:55) “As much as there is more to success than money, and part of breaking out of the corporate 9 to 5 is also about breaking away from that steady salary that you’ve been used to, it would be very naive of me to claim that money doesn’t matter in business. Financial freedom is absolutely key to running a successful business and, of course, a comfortable lifestyle. The last thing you want to do is become one of the many struggling freelancers – that cliché of the ‘feast or famine’ – or the hustling entrepreneurs who are working late into the night and still have failed businesses.” (6:50) “The truth is that even when you’ve succeeded in establishing your business – the basics, the fundamentals – you’ve got all those in place, you’ve been making some sales… things inevitably take longer than you realise, and you may not be making enough yet to replace your previous or your current full-time salary, to go ‘all-in’ in this business.” (9:29) “It’s a five-day boot camp, free of course, that’s going to help you package your offer to really stand out in that over-saturated, crowded market; to get started proactively marketing online to attract clients to you rather than having to go out chasing them, or passively sitting around and hoping they’re just going to come, and, ultimately, this is going to help you generate the sales you need in the weeks, months and years to come.”

14 Oct 2024 | RS311 - Why Listening to Yourself is Critical for Business Success | 00:15:41
In this week's episode, Anna builds on her concept of the "good girl syndrome," a learned behaviour from childhood that often impedes our ability to make independent decisions in adulthood. Drawing from her own experience of quitting her job in 2013 against conventional advice, Anna highlights the dangers of outsourcing our career and life choices to others. She examines the pervasive influence of business coaches and thought leaders who promise one-size-fits-all solutions, urging listeners to harness their own intuition and trust their instincts. Through thoughtful discussion, Anna encourages a move away from seeking external validation towards embracing a unique and self-defined path to success. 13 Dec 2018 | RS3 – What does success mean for you? | 00:16:58
Anna continues to explore how you can begin to answer the question, “what is ‘success’ to you?” with three different practical exercises to try. (1:00) “I always say that you need to think big first and then later, once you’ve uncovered those secret ambitions and dreams, you can of course – and you need to – narrow down your options and filter for feasibility.” (2:29) “Please humour me here: forget where you are right now, forget the ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ and all the reasons why you think it’s not possible; because defining what success means for you involves looking at the ‘what’ and the ‘why’, why it’s important to you – but the ‘how’ is going to come later.” (3:56) “Often, people will tell me, ‘Oh, I don’t know what I want!’ but deep down, I think if you admit it to yourself (if not to others yet), often you really do know, you’re just not allowing yourself to believe that something is a possibility. It’s much safer to keep doing what you’ve been doing, not articulate what you really want – because then, of course, if you say what you want, the risk and possibility is that you open yourself up to fail if you’re unable to achieve it.” If you want to share your vision board with Anna, then you can contact her at podcast@onestepoutside.com. *If you like what you hear, then make sure that you subscribe to the podcast so that you never miss an episode!* This is all about you, so Anna will be asking you for input, questions, feedback to help her create content that answers your needs and helps you with whatever you’re working on at the moment. In today's episode, Anna looks at common mistakes and pitfalls to avoid as you navigate the transition of leaving your 9 to 5 to work for yourself. Leaving behind everything that you know in the world of full-time employment to embrace working for yourself is a huge decision and a massive change, and it's easy to focus on everything that could go wrong. "What if...?" "But maybe I can't..." "What do I do if...?" A lot of mistakes can be avoided if we think it through, plan ahead, and work with someone who has "been there, done that".

17 Sep 2020 | RS95 - Self-employed and taking time off | 00:17:00
In today's episode, Anna looks at why it's so important to take proper time off in your day, in your week, and your year, even as an early-stage entrepreneur. It's very easy to tell yourself, and I did that in the early days of my business, "Oh, yeah, I'm working all the time, but I don't mind. I just love it so much." And you know what? Yes, it's amazing that you're working on creating something that you're so passionate about, but that doesn't mean, of course, it's the only thing that matters. And I know you know this, but it bears reminding. It's just something we tend to forget in the day-to-day hustle. So it's not good for anybody, for you, for your business, for your friends and family if you blur those boundaries so much, that you're always on. So, again, taking care of you is taking care of your business. Taking time off can also, by the way, give you new ideas. You can come back feeling inspired and energised, you have a new type of clarity of thinking. And bear in mind, I'm pretty sure this is the reason why you started your business in the first place. So you need to learn how to switch off, and take proper time off - during your day, your week, and your year.

30 Jul 2020 | RS88 - Changing self-limiting beliefs | 00:15:30
In today's episode, Anna looks at how we can identify the stories that we tell ourselves that are holding us back from getting to where we want to be, and creating new stories that will support us in our goals. There are stories that we tell ourselves that can - and this is why it's so important - hold us back from getting to where we want to be. On the other hand, there are stories we can craft and tell ourselves that can actually allow us to get exactly to where we want to be. We need to be aware of those stories and reframe them where they don't serve us, creating new stories that will support us in our goals and get us to where we want to be. *Resources mentioned during the episode*
