With the upcoming digitalization, COVID, with the war going on, there are a lot of shortages! Shortage of materials, shortage of time, and shortage of talent. We truly live in a chaotic world and that isn’t easy to handle. That’s why in this episode of Rebel Leader with a Heart, I have an amazing conversation with one of the founders of Duval Union, Carole Lamarque about dealing with this uncertainty and chaos in today’s fast-changing world.

Digitalization has been up and coming for a little while now. But still, changes and innovations in technology are made every day. This in combination with the inflation, the war in Ukraine and COVID leads to a ton of chaos and uncertainty. That’s why in today’s podcast, I have an amazing conversation with Carole Lamarque, the founder of Duval Union. 

Who is Carole?

Carole has always been interested in crisis management and dealing with exponential growth. Remaining calm in the centre of a storm is what she has been doing for years on end. She says her passion for marketing defines her and she always seeks to go viral and create exponential growth. She also has written multiple books to inspire other leaders to deal with crises.

What’s the secret to leading in chaos?

Sooooo, how the hell are we supposed to satisfy our investors and bosses with so little information? How are we supposed to keep up and not burn ourselves out in the lightning-fast times? Carole gives us four great tips for this!

First of all, crises are here to stay. Our world is in a constant state of change and accepting this will make our lives so much easier. It is super important not to prepare for the previous crisis, but rather, we should understand what we can take from one crisis to another. We need to accept that we will never have all the information to make decisions. If a leader can accept that chaos is a normal part of the process, they can help their colleagues calm down and be in the right state of mind to make decisions and be innovative. 

Secondly, creating the habit of making and changing plans on the go is one of the most important tips great crisis managers give. It’s not the ability to follow a plan that’s important, but rather having the agility to adapt to and overcome uncertain situations. You should manage unexpected situations through your agility habits, not because you had a certain plan in advance.

Thirdly, remember that you are never alone. You’re only one element in the solution to a problem. Share your knowledge with others and don’t underestimate their power to help you!

And last but not least, never stop learning! Everything around us is changing all the time, so keeping up is super important. It’s never too late to pick up classes or courses to learn about upcoming trends or read a good book about it.

How to properly get help from others

If you want to deal with chaos and uncertainty, you should never underestimate the help you can get from others, even if they have a different area of expertise. There are many ways of getting help from others and Carole gave me a couple of great tips. First of all, never underestimate the power of youth. What others sometimes see as naiveté, can often be a clever idea that can lead to great innovation. You also need a lot of energy in chaotic times and youngsters have plenty of that!

Karine decided to make this transition because at some point, she realized that things weren’t going so well for our planet. She still loved recruitment, but she was missing some purpose, that’s when she decided to focus more on companies who want to do a transition and find conscious leaders that will empower them and will accelerate that transition towards more sustainability.

What is a conscious leader?

The word ‘conscious’ has different meanings in different contexts and Karine and myself also have a different point of view on its definition, so I was curious to ask her: “How do you define a conscious leader?”

“A conscious leader is someone who works for the common good and is guided by a vision that takes into account all stakeholders of the company as well as the profit of the company. It is someone who wants to work for the good of all people, but also for the greater good of the planet, taking into account the impact their company have on the planet.”

For me a conscious leader is also somebody that is conscious of their values, but also their behaviors, thoughts, emotions, and especially under pressure. But on most views, Karine and I agree and even complement each other.

Are you serving your stakeholders?

There is an exercise I often give on workshops. I want you to think of the stakeholders you have. And now I want you to think of your day-to-day work. Where does your focus go to? TO the headquarters? To financial expectations? Or is it more to the people, the customers or the planet. It’s good to be aware that there is often a gap between your day-to-day actions and the actions that would greatly benefit your stakeholders and afterwards, the company itself.

How do you find these leaders?

Well firstly, Karine has designed an executive value tool. It works like a sustainable filter for the recruitment process and gives an indication whether the values of the candidate match the values of the company. It also gives a set of fundamental values matching to the candidate and gives a percentage that defines the consciousness level of that person.

Are companies ready to recruit these conscious leaders?

At first, most organizations were still racing around like headless chickens, checking as much checkboxes as possible to satisfy demands from higher up the chain. But since the pandemic, people could finally take a step back and think about our personal health and our planet’s health. That’s when the demand started rising quickly. Times have gotten so fast, that we NEED conscious leaders to facilitate these fast transitions. If companies want to attract young talent and people who are very talented but lost their motivation, this conscious and sustainable transition is a necessity.

Have you ever been in this loop where whatever action you take, you don't seem to get the results you want? You try to deliver what is expected from you, you go from one meeting to the next, from one project to the next and still, it's not enough to reach the outcome you want. And at the end of the day, you can be exhausted.
That's because there is one thing you need to manage before everything else. One thing that made all the difference for Apple & Spotify. And it's because they didn't manage that very well that the traditional music players lost revenues and that some of them even disappeared.
Whether you are a person or an organization, you should always manage this before your actions. Simply being action-oriented isn't enough anymore in our fast-changing digital times.
When I came across this concept at almost 40, it transformed my life and I wondered "Why didn't I learn this in school or at university?". Today, I teach this to my MBA students, to the leaders in my programs and I even taught this to my children.
It changed my life and managing this will transform yours.

In March 2020, COVID-19 hit us pretty hard. Most of us ended up working from our homes and in the beginning, this was nice.
No more traffic, more time to spend with your family or yourself, and getting more autonomy. But quickly, we realized that this wasn’t always so great… We started forgetting when to take breaks because it was so hard distinguishing work from home.
But one of the biggest negative impacts I noticed with a lot of people, is loneliness. You don’t have these coffee chats or breaks with your colleagues anymore and everything is serious and formal.

And sometimes, I then act from a place of fear, of anger, of sadness, of resignation instead of responding from a place of love or with actions aligned with my values & who I really am so that I reach my desired outcome.

That’s when I grow and reach amazing results.

But to get there, I often like listening to a meditation. And that’s what I wanted to offer you. A meditation, you can listen to every time you face a big challenge.

That meditation will help you feel better and act with more skillful action.

Never in my career have I seen so many people feeling exhausted, disengaged, anxious, or stressed. The workload is extremely high everywhere. People are reviewing their priorities, and the great resignation has started leaving even more workload for those who stay. People are also missing the fun of collaborating the deeper conversations with their colleagues, the informal exchanges that inspire or give this boost in motivation. Work has become very transactional and focused on tasks and projects.
