16 Jan 2016Changing of the Guard with Fred Greenhalgh and David Rheinstrom00:29:09
Well, how to say this.
After 9 years, long-time RDR host Fred Greenhalgh passes the torch to incoming host David Rheinstrom. We take a moment to reflect on the amazing journey - 450 hours of entertainment! - in RDR's first nine years, and focus on the great state of current audio drama, and the future ahead of it.
Why David? Well, David is a writer and game maker who was living in Chicago before the cool salt air of the Pacific was too alluring and he came out to Mountain View, CA, home of Google and their army of Schwinn bikes. He first got into radio theater in 2007, when he and two friends produced three original shows – Sky Pirates!, The Human Chord, and Simon Colt – with the KWUR Theater of the Air, their college radio theater company. For his day job, David works as a grammarian at an education nonprofit in the San Francisco Bay area. Prior to coming on board with Radio Drama Revival, David was assistant sound editor, writer, and producer with the cult-hit post-apocalyptic podcast Our Fair City.
What's Fred off to next? All sorts of things, some of which are revealed in this podcast. This is definitely not the end!

06 Feb 2016Alba Salix, Royal Physician - 'To Market, To Market' & Interview with Eli McIlveen01:05:07
This week:
Witchcraft!
Charlatans!
A Canadian plot to annex the United States?(!)
David begins with a brief bit of history on John R. Brinkley, the notorious Goat Gland Doctor of Milford, Kansas. A bit of quackery seemed relevant given today's episode, which features an episode of Alba Salix, Royal Physician, a fantasy hospital comedy. The episode we're playing features an ethically dubious patent medicine.
After the feature, David has a chat with Alba Salix show creator Eli McIlveen.

Enjoy!

19 Feb 2016Beyond Belief - 'White Hunter, Drunk Heart' & Interview with Ben Acker00:53:09
This week:
Liquor!
Gods!
A drunk lady rattling off the names of animals!
I talk to Ben Acker of the Thrilling Adventure Hour, and play one of my favorite episodes of Beyond Belief: "White Hunter, Drunk Heart".
Those wacky married mediums, Sadie and Frank Doyle (Paget Brewster and Paul F. Tompkins) are on an adventure in the Serengeti -- but when they kill a god's favorite lion, have they taken it a step too safari?

04 Mar 2016Hadron Gospel Hour - 'HeadHatz and Horror Hosts' & Interview with Rich Wentworth01:15:07
This week:
It's a non-stop carnival of freaky tiki madness as I chat with Rich Wentworth, the co-creator of Hadron Gospel Hour.
Rich and I talk about glam rock, how he and co-creator Michael McQuilkin got started in audio drama, and whether or not everything is going to be okay (spoiler alert: it is going to be okay).
Our feature this week is Season 1, Episode 8 of Hadron Gospel Hour: "HeadHatz and Horror Hosts".
Mike brings a stylish new hat into the Hadron Bunker, but Oppenheimer is far too busy with his continuing education class to notice the sinister nature of his pal's new chapeau. Will Oppenheimer, A.S.H. LE and Cyrus be able to stop this menace in time? Or will the crew find themselves bowlered over? (S'aright? S'okay.)
Enjoy, folks!
-David

This week, we take a trip to the drizzly English village of Piffling Vale, where undertaker Rudyard Funn discovers he's no longer the only mortician in town in Episode 1 of the fabulous indie sitcom WOODEN OVERCOATS.
Later in the show, I talk with David K. Barnes and Andy Goddard, the head writer and co-producer of WOODEN OVERCOATS. Fun is had, velvet is worn, and we all learn a valuable lesson about Sitcom Theory.

01 Apr 2016Wolf 359 - 'Extreme Danger Bug' & Interview with Emma Sherr-Ziarko and Zach Valenti01:03:56
This week on Radio Drama Revival, it’s the comic sci-fi thriller Wolf 359. This genre-bending show, by turns endearing, intense, terrifying, and hilarious, is a delight to listen to - and its stars are a delight to talk to!
Wolf 359 is the story of a lonely little space station orbiting a red dwarf star, and the four personalities aboard it: Commander Renée Minkowski, a badass astronaut who has literally memorized the book on deep-space survival; Alexander Hilbert, a scientist who may or may not be utterly nuts; Hera, one of the most sardonic artificial intelligences in audio fiction; and Doug Eiffel, the lazy-but-lovable communications officer (and narrator).
Join me as I play Episode 10 of Wolf 359 - “Extreme Danger Bug” - and then sit down with Emma Sherr-Ziarko and Zach Valenti, two of the show’s stars. It’s sure to be a wild ride.
16 Apr 2016Kraken Mare - from Yap Audio00:29:02
This week, we take a dip into the chilly methane seas of Titan with "Kraken Mare", an atmospheric sci-fi horror thriller from friends of the show Matthew McLean and Robert Cudmore of the Audio Production Podcast.
When plucky British astronauts descend into Kraken Mare, the largest sea of Saturn's strangest moon, they don't know just what they'll find. And they certainly aren't expecting what's about to find THEM.
Enjoy!

30 Apr 2016Starlight Radio Dreams - 'The Merry Wench Wendy'01:19:21
This week, we get SILLY with a little Starlight Radio Dreams – a live variety show recorded in Chicago by veterans of Chicago's theater scene. Starlight Radio Dreams is hosted by Devin Showtime (Anna Gaetke), a media-savvy Millenial, and her old-timey uncle Burlington Showtime (Ansel Burch), a film star of days gone by. It's all oh so very goofy; mouth foley and bad puns abound.

This week, you'll hear a little snippet of SRD, including not just the show's frame narrative of Burlington and Devin Showtime, but one of their four radio serials as well: The Merry Wench Wendy, a steampunk adventure about pirates, revenge, and collectible card games.

This week, we play 2015’s winning piece for Deathscribe, a horror radio play competition put on by Wildclaw Theatre in Chicago -- later in the show, I'll talk with Wildclaw company member, Foley artist, and friend of the show Ele Matelan. I may be on vacation, but the hits just keep on comin'! We're featuring an episode of the fantabulous, trippy RUBY by Tom Lopez and ZBS -- a cyberpunk adventure from the 80s that's sultry, smart, and fun. Ruby's a proud member of the Wondery Network, and so are we!

Later, you'll hear an interview Fred did with Ruby's writer/director Tom Lopez in 2012.

If you have the chance, I'd be very grateful if you'd give this survey a go: http://Wondery.com/survey

06 Aug 2016The Truth - 'The Man in the Barn' & Interview with Jonathan Mitchell00:56:04
This week, we play an episode of The Truth, Jonathan Mitchell's collaboration with New York's Magnet Theater; they're dedicated to making audio fiction the likes of which you've never heard. It's intimate, it's internal, and it's cinematic, all at once.

Motivated by an improv style and by Mitchell's 15 years as a public radio documentarian, The Truth is produced in a manner halfway between a sketch comedy show and a segment of Radiolab (where Jonathan worked as a producer). Today, you'll hear "The Man in the Barn", written by and starring The Truth regular and Magnet Theater highlight Louis Kornfeld; the piece was produced on location in Kilfinane, County Limerick, Ireland, during the 2015 HearSay Festival.

Stick around after the piece to listen to a conversation between me and Jonathan Mitchell, as we talk about experimental music, sound art, and cinema.
20 Aug 2016The Thing on the Fourble Board - With Guest Gabriel Urbina01:04:44
This week, Gabriel Urbina, writer and director of WOLF 359, joins me for a segment we're calling "Going Deep"; together, the two of us investigate one of Gabriel's favorite classic audio dramas, 1948's "The Thing on the Fourble Board" from QUIET, PLEASE. We play the feature, and then Gabriel and I take it apart, piece by piece, trying to unlock precisely what it is that makes "The Thing on the Fourble Board" so damn spooky.

This week, we're taking a little detour into UNCANNY COUNTY, the brainchild of playwrights Alison Crane and Todd Faulkner, both proud children of Oklahoma.

I play an episode of theirs, "Coulrophobia" (which is about spooky, spooky clowns!), and then the three of us have a little chat. Alison tells me a secret! Todd reveals the travails of creating custom foley for an army of [SPOILERS]! We talk at length about the unique qualities of Oklahoma that inform UNCANNY COUNTY; then Alison reads our horoscopes.

01 Oct 2016Campfire Radio Theater - 'Woods Ferry'00:33:34

This week, say goodbye to Spooktember and HELLO TO SHOCKTOBER! Thunderbolt

We’re beginning a month of spookitude, commencing with John Ballentine and Campfire Radio Theater. This piece is called “Woods Ferry”, about a band of weekend treasure hunters who travel to a South Carolina ghost town, only to discover ~exactly~ why it was abandoned.

This is a binaural piece; listen with headphones if you can!

15 Oct 2016The Wall in the Mind - Episode 1 & Interview with Gareth Stack01:15:00
This week, I play Episode One of Gareth Stack's startling psychological thriller, "The Wall in the Mind". It's the tale of a city split down the middle, and a woman whose life split with it. Claire O'Hanlon was a young woman in 1989 --an Irish national on the Eastern side of the Berlin Wall--when she was arrested by the Stasi, the East German secret police.

After months of imprisonment and interrogation, Claire was set free, only to find the world had changed; the Wall had come down, and her lover, Emil Reichmann, had disappeared. In the present day, Claire returns to Berlin when she receives a mysterious cassette tape: a recording from her youth.

Following the episode, I'll talk to the writer, director, and producer of "The Wall in the Mind", Gareth Stack. We discuss love, loss, sanity, and the surveillance state. It's a conversation not to be missed!
29 Oct 2016The Dark Tome - Fred Greenhalgh00:43:50
Host emeritus Fred Greenhalgh is back to try out the sofa and tell us about his new podcast, "The Dark Tome."

What if there was a book that literally opened up doorways to other worlds? Where would it lead, and could you handle what you found on the other side?

Cassie, a wayward teen, is about to find out. One day, after she wraps up community service at a local hospital, she stumbles out of the basement of a spooky bookshop and into a story set on a devil's staircase in a remote Italian village.

The Dark Tome is a new take on the anthology audio fiction podcast, featuring fantastic stories by contemporary authors from across the globe.

This episode features the first half of the chilling modern fable "The Devil on the Staircase" by Joe Hill.
12 Nov 201611th Hour Audio Productions - 'Heavenly Deception' & 'Cargo'01:29:25
We're belatedly celebrating World Audio Drama Day by bringing you two fabulous and spooky productions from 11th Hour--the annual tradition wherein audio dramatists of every stripe come together and make spine-tingling, spur-of-the-moment audio fiction in the month of October.

Producers Eli and Matt are on-hand to explain.

First, you'll hear 11th Hour Northeast's HEAVENLY DECEPTION, a 70s-cult thriller that takes place in a sleepy little beach town.

Then, I briefly interview Steve Schneider, the writer and director of that piece.

Finally, you'll hear 11th Hour Scotland's CARGO, a science-fiction horror piece.

You can hear all of this year's 11th Hour pieces at http://11thhouraudio.com
26 Nov 2016Our Fair City - Season 4 Finale & Interview with Jeffrey Gardner00:56:49
This week, Our Fair City’s executive producer, Jeffrey Gardner, joins me for a chat and a deep dive into one of his favorite episodes, the season 4 finale of OFC.

Warning: this episode contains spoilers for, y’know, the first four seasons of Our Fair City. Proceed with caution!

After the feature, Jeffrey and I discuss the piece, the power of myth, embarrassing stories from childhood, and self-care for artists.
10 Dec 2016Hector Vs. The Future - Oðinn Örn Hilmarsson and Andy Goddard01:19:47
This week, we explore HECTOR VS THE FUTURE, a bleakly-funny comedy podcast, recorded live in London by members of the creative team that brought us WOODEN OVERCOATS. Created by comedy writers James Huntrods and James Hamilton, HECTOR VS THE FUTURE is the story of two rival museums: the Uptodateum, the most au courant museum in town, and the Obsoleteum, a rusted hulk of an institution.

We're playing Episode 3 of the show, and after the feature, I'll speak to director Andy Goddard and composer Oðinn Örn Hilmarsson. Enjoy!
24 Dec 2016Jim Robbie and the Wanderers - Iri Sheremet and Laura Bramblette01:08:15
I'm all about the growth mindset: the idea that you can always improve yourself and your work, and to me, nothing embodies that more than JIM ROBBIE AND THE WANDERERS, a constantly-evolving production that puts fun, ingenuity, and optimism where you'd never expect it: the apocalypse.

The world is different, scorched, sunk, and changed, but that doesn't really seem to bother our heroes, a wacky traveling band composed of two humans and a tin-can robot. Their off-kilter adventures take them through an America full of fairy queens, giant bees, and explosion-sports, and through it all, the show's commitment to surfacing minority perspectives, queer identities, and a cheerful attitude shine through.

Stick around after I play the revised first episode of Jim Robbie and the Wanderers, and you'll get to hear an interview with Iri and Laura, two members of the creative team behind the show. Then, I've got a Special Holidaytime Message for y'all.

See you in the New Year! Happy holidays!
21 Jan 2017Big Data - Ryan Estrada, PLUS 10 years of RDR!01:33:49
Can you believe it? This podcast has been around for A DECADE!

I'm so grateful for the trust you've put in me, that Fred and the team have put in me, to helm this show. And what better way to honor our tenth anniversary than with a star-studded funstravaganza? I play an episode of Ryan Estrada's brilliant stumbleheist adventure, BIG DATA. Then, I sit down with Ryan, a cartoonist who made his way to audio fiction.

Here's to ten more years of Radio Drama Revival! Thanks for sticking with us.

15 Apr 2017Archive 81 - Dan Powell and Marc Sollinger00:57:33
This week, things are going to get spooky at Radio Drama Revival as we delve into the world of horror audio fiction. David talks to Marc Sollinger and Dan Powell, the evil minds behind Archive 81 and The Deep Vault.

They discuss the horror fiction that makes them tick, how to construct audio fiction that’ll make your skin crawl, and what it’s like to collaborate with one of your closest friends. We’ll also take a listen to the first episode of their show Archive 81, which is about a young man with a new job, recordings from an uncanny apartment building, and the dangers of listening.
22 Apr 2017RDR From the Vault: Heart of Morphine, by Roger Gregg00:50:43
Today RDR from the Vault launches a series of episodes highlighting Roger Gregg, playwright master of Dublin, Ireland.

Roger pioneered his own audio sound, a wacky blend of Captain Beefheart sonic assault and an intimate, fine theatre sensibility. He produced for RTE - that’s the public radio of Ireland- for the better part of a decade and since parting ways with them has continued on mostly on stage but ocacsionally gracing us with an audio piece. What we’ll hear today is one of the latter types, from the post-RTE era of Roger’s work, done during his work as a theatre instructor at the Gaiety school of Acting in Ireland.

This is “Heart of Morphine”

Morgan O’Brien hangs in limbo between life and death, and finds the afterlife a much wilder place than he imagined. Confused, frustrated, and alone, he is forced to confront the reality of his actions made while alive. But is there still time to go back and change things?

07 May 2017RDR From the Vault: Stuff of Myth, Part 100:52:52
Ahh, ancient Greece. Hot nymphs, raging orgies, much wine, song, and occasional transformations into a goat. All well and good, right?

Well things are more wacky than ever in the sizzling and scandalous interpretation of the myth of Orpheus done by Roger Gregg, The Stuff of Myth.

This great production won a Gold Ogle in 2007 and has gotten rave reviews as a stage play. Now hear what the buzz is all about in Parts 1-2 of The Stuff of Myth.
14 May 2017The Handmaid's Tale - Danny Ortberg00:39:30

NOTE: This interview took place before Daniel Mallory Ortberg came out as a man, so you'll hear me call him by his previous name and use female pronouns.

Here are the rest of the show notes as they ran in May 2017:

We conclude our two-part conversation series around The Handmaid's Tale, which you can find in an Audio Drama form over at Secrets, Crimes, and Audiotape. This week, I had the great pleasure of talking to Mallory Ortberg, a writer, culture critic, and advice columnist. She's Dear Prudence over at Slate, and she used to run a magnificent site called The Toast.

In this episode, we discuss:

The Handmaid's Tale and White Feminism
How to avoid becoming an Internal Expat
* Fending off the Republic of Gilead

and much, much more!

28 May 2017Hi, I'm Mattie (HIM) - Alexander Charles Adams01:05:49

As a note, Alexander Charles Adams now uses they/them pronouns. This week, Alexander Charles Adams of SMASH/CUT joins me to discuss their piece, “Hi, I’m Mattie (HIM)”.

Matthew Cavan is an actor and drag queen in Belfast, Northern Ireland; they came out about their HIV-positive status in 2010, and has since faced a torrent of criticism, shaming, and even death threats. The piece we’re playing today, “Hi, I’m Mattie”, is a verbatim piece -- that is, the script is taken word-for-word from interactions that Mattie had on the gay dating app Grindr, where they disclose their HIV-positive status up-front.

Afterwards, Alexander (the producer of the piece) joins me to talk about the origins of SMASH/CUT, and many other things besides!

10 Jun 2017The Case for Audio Drama with Neil Verma00:50:20

Professor Neil Verma joins me to discuss his essay series, “The Case for Audio Drama”. He’s a professor of Sound Studies at Northwestern University, and a longtime scholar of audio drama. We discuss the history of the form, and areas of his particular interest: radio drama from the 30s through the 50s. But we don’t just talk about old stuff! Professor Verma is as excited as I am about the audio fiction being produced today.

Join us as we connect the styles and conventions of the vibrant old stuff to the vibrant new stuff!

01 Jul 2017Wireless Theater Company - 'The Autopsy'00:25:19
This week, line producer Matthew Boudreau hooks us up with some binaural horror from the Wireless Theatre Company with The Autopsy.
For more great audio from the Wireless Theatre Company, including the stunning Springheel'd Jack Saga, visit their website at http://www.wirelesstheatre.co.uk

A couple of notes:
Binaural sound attempts to authentically recreate how we hear. Listening to this episode with headphones is highly recommended.
The Autopsy contains some visceral and graphic audio material. If you’re squeamish, we advise using your own discretion before listening.
16 Jul 2017Podcast Meander - Dan Leone00:54:20
This week, we play an episode of an experimental podcast called PODCAST MEANDER, which kind of skirts the border between autobiography and fiction. Dan Leone plays/is a character, also named Dan, who has thrown away his old life (or attempted to). After secretly saving for years, Dan quits his job in Connecticut and heads west, unsure of what he wants to do with his life.

In the episode you'll hear today, Dan comes to suddenly on a train, unaware of where it's going, why he's aboard, or where he left his car.

It's an intriguing mix of documentary, interview, and fiction, and I think you'll like it.

CW: mental illness, substance abuse, politics

22 Jul 2017Starship Iris - Episode 2 & Interview with Jessica Best01:03:35
Writer/director/producer Jessica Best joins me to talk about her new science-fiction mystery adventure, THE STRANGE CASE OF STARSHIP IRIS.

Best is part of the recently-formed Procyon Network, a podcast network whose mission is to create inclusive fiction. All of them are fabulous people.

We're going to play Episode 2 of Starship Iris, which is a sometimes-funny, sometimes-tragic, deeply thoughtful adventure in space. Imagine FIREFLY with a mostly-female cast and a badass Hufflepuff for a ship's captain and you're, like, halfway there.

29 Jul 2017The Axe and Crown - Episode 2, 3, and 400:38:38
This week, we dive into the fabulous world of The Axe and Crown -- (our very own) Eli McIlveen's spinoff miniseries from Alba Salix, Royal Physician. It's a fantasy world where the most immediate dangers aren't dragons or wizards, but yuppies threatening to gentrify your neighborhood.
Gubbin is a salty old troll who runs a tavern called The Axe and Crown. It's a dive bar on the bad side of the river. Stan is a human, and the naive new landlord who thinks he can renovate the place.
What we've got today is a little sampler that Eli threw together of episodes 2, 3, and 4: it'll be enough to whet your appetite, I reckon!

05 Aug 2017Stories of Mahabharata - 'Bhima and Hanuman' & 'Nahusha's Curse'00:41:00
This week, it's the Stories of Mahabharata, retold by Sudipta Bhawmik, a multitalented playwright, storyteller, and engineer. With music and immersive sound design by Avi Ziv, Bhawmik animates this ancient Indian epic, rendering it in English to delight those that have never heard it before as well as those who were raised on the stories.
The Mahabharata is thousands of years old, and originally in Sanskrit. It tells the story of two groups of warring cousins -- the Pandava brothers and the Kaurava brothers -- who fight over the throne. But it's more than just a war story; it's a story of love and curses, righteousness and evil, tricksters, poisons, and monkeys.
We're featuring episodes 30 and 31 of Bhawmik's retold Mahabharata: first, Bheema (a Pandava brother with enormous strength) encounters Hanuman. Then, a story of Arjuna (another Pandava, and the greatest archer in the world).

12 Aug 2017The Embrace - 'Nights on Killer Mountain'01:09:11
Why do we climb? Why do people look at the tallest mountains in the world -- vast, inhospitable places -- and say, "I want to climb to its summit"? When you're up there, what do you become? What do you give up?

We're exploring those questions today in a new drama by JJ Wang from Netizen Playhouse:
The Embrace: Nights on Killer Mountain
The story follows an Australian mountaineer, Zoe, who wants to be the first woman to summit Nanga Parbat, one of the deadliest mountains in the world, in winter.

19 Aug 2017Darkest Night - 'Horns Limo Service' & Interview with Alex Aldea00:59:10
It's a spine-tingler this week, as we dive into the twisted world of Darkest Night with a little story called "Horns Limo Service".

Darkest Night is a horror anthology series from the Paragon Collective, and what makes it special is its binaural recording setup. It's similar to what Campfire Radio does: it puts you inside the action. Not a lot of audio drama companies do this, and it's really neat!
After the feature, I have a chat with Alex Aldea, the director and producer of Darkest Night. We talk origins, horror, sound design, and all kinds of spoopy junk.

Enjoy!
26 Aug 2017EOS 10 - Justin McLachlan00:31:10
This week, we explore EOS 10, a medical comedy in space. Dr Ryan Dalias is a young doctor, recently assigned to a posting on EOS 10, a station in deep space. Dalias's job, ostensibly, is to manage his alcoholic superior, Dr. Horace Urvidian—a brilliant but curmudgeonly xenobiologist. Together with Nurse Johns and Levi, a disgraced prince-turned-chef, the four of them have numerous wacky hijinks.

This episode, "Up, Up, Up," contains adult situations and themes of, well, boners.

We're premiering INHALE, the latest miniseries by Rick Coste, the unstoppable, unbelievably prolific audio drama producer from New England.

Tracy Tanner is an unassuming librarian in the small town of Hemlock, Massachusetts—but Tracy isn't her real name, and she isn't just a librarian. Tracy is a superhero—and she's not supering anymore.

Join me as we dive into Tracy's secrets in this exciting new miniseries!

16 Sep 2017Blood Culture - Episode 1 & Interview with Lance Dann01:11:17
Scholar and dramatist Lance Dann joins me as we play the first episode of his techno-thriller, BLOOD CULTURE.

It's a trans-media project, consisting of not just a radio drama, but of an AR game that begins with this in-world website (as well as plenty of goofy easter eggs in the credits page).

Blood Culture is the story of A'isha, an employee of an enormous biotech firm called Meta. Meta's interns are falling ill and dying at an alarming rate, and it's up to A'isha, and her childhood friend Livy, to investigate.

After the feature, Lance and I discuss tech culture, the research that went into this production, and seeking a diverse set of creative partners.
23 Sep 2017A Scottish Podcast - Episode Mashup00:45:10
Two foul-mouthed Scottish paranormal investigators travel to the misty island of St. Caillic to uncover the secret of a terrible anniversary--it's A Scottish Podcast, the newest creation of former Audio Drama Production Podcast hosts Robert Cudmore and Matthew McLean.

Robert and Matthew play Lee and Dougie, two washed-up, cynical castaways from the music biz who decide to strike out as paranormal podcasters. What you'll hear today is multiple episodes stitched together by Robert and Matthew, and sent over with love.
30 Sep 201736 Questions - Ellen Winter and Chris Littler00:54:43
This week, I'm joined by Ellen Winter and Chris Littler of Chamber Band to talk about their new podcast for Two-Up Productions, the production company that brought you Limetown.
36 Questions is a fabulous PODCAST MUSICAL starring Jessie Shelton (Hadestown) and Jonathan Groff (Glee, Spring Awakening, Hamilton) and you should go and listen to it right now, before you listen to this interview. Go ahead! I'll wait. You'll love it.

07 Oct 2017Double Feature: 'Deadly Manners' & 'Rites of Autumn'00:52:37
A double-feature this week as we begin our October horror series!
First, from Paragon Collective and the makers of Darkest Night, it's Deadly Manners, a new murder mystery show narrated by LeVar Burton (Star Trek, Reading Rainbow) and starring Kristen Bell (Frozen, Veronica Mars) and Anna Chlumsky (Veep).
CW: racism, misogyny, and murder!
Then, it's a chilling tale of family business in Rites of Autumn, a spooky little tale of tradition, pumpkins, and more murder. That comes to us from John Ballantine of Campfire Radio Theater.
CW: more murder, gruesome descriptions
14 Oct 2017We're Alive: Lockdown - KC Wayland01:40:02
It wouldn't be a monster episode without MONSTERS, would it?! Awww yeah it's zombie time!

American podcast legend KC Wayland joins me for a chat about craft, zombies, and Force Multipliers of Art.

We're gonna play an episode of We're Alive: Lockdown, the miniseries that combines a jailbreak with horror-survival adventure. SPOOPTOBER CONTINUES, as we bring you yet another episode to thrill and perturb!
21 Oct 2017Steal The Stars - Mac Rogers01:04:01
New York playwright and audio dramatist Mac Rogers joins me for a discussion about craft, aliens, and influences as we excerpt some of his new thriller, Steal The Stars, a co-production between Tor Books and his own production company, Gideon Media.

Steal the Stars is the story of Dakota "Dak" Prentiss, the security chief at Quill Marine, a secretive private military contractor. Quill Marine is built around the biggest secret of all time, and new recruits have to be taken down to see the secret—to see if they can handle it. But a new recruit, Matt Salem, turns out to be more than Dak herself can handle. In the sexy love-type way, I mean.

This is a story of forbidden love, aliens, and a big old friggin' heist, baby.

#SPOOPTOBER continues!
30 Oct 201711th Hour Audio Productions - 'Shadows of Halloween' & 'Ivory Towers'01:39:27
We're celebrating AUDIO DRAMA DAY by featuring some works from 11th Hour Productions, the once-a-year marathon audio drama production festival where dramatists from all the world over come together to create magnificently creepy fiction.

We're featuring two pieces this year: Shadows of Halloween, written by Neil Gustin and created by 11th Hour US East, and Ivory Towers, written by Richard Brooks and created by 11th Hour UK.

Stick around for the credits for the thrilling conclusion of Radio Drama Revival and the Ham of Mallorca.
04 Nov 2017Bronzeville - Episode 1 & Interview with LaRon and Lahmard Tate01:21:00
Bronzeville is a story of the Great Migration: it follows Jimmy Tillman (Larenz Tate), a papermill worker from Arkansas who kills a strikebreaker and flees to Chicago to find a new life for himself, tracing the steps of millions of Black Americans who migrated from the rural South to the urban North in the mid-20th century.
Jimmy makes his way to Bronzeville, the legendary Black neighborhood on Chicago's South Side, where he falls in with the Copeland family, the operators of a policy racket—an underground lottery—that functioned like a bank when white-owned banks wouldn't lend to Black people. Everett Copeland (Wood Harris) is doing a spell in federal prison for tax evasion, so he asks his old lieutenant Curtis "Eyeball" Randolph (Laurence Fishburne) to get back into the game.
(Yeah for real this is a star-studded episode! I can scarcely believe it myself.)
We play episode 1 of Bronzeville, and then I talk to two of the producers, LaRon and Lahmard Tate, about the show's origins, productions that are too Black for TV, and the Tate family's Chicago history.

18 Nov 2017The Fall of the House of Sunshine - 'Open Wide and Say Die'00:33:18
What a suntabulous bicuspid of a day! It's time for the Sunshine Smile Hour, a dental hygiene-themed children's program! Oh golly, this is a good one, and ain't that the tooth.

So this episode is utterly wackadoo: imagine a musical comedy along the lines of Book of Mormon, Avenue Q, or Reefer Madness, with a solid helping of noir pastiche and cosmic horror alongside. The Fall of the House of Sunshine is like if you put all of the above musicals into a high-powered blender along with a collection of H.P. Lovecraft short stories, a pint of ether and a handful of dexedrine. It is hilarious! It is offensive! It is stylistically all over the place! It is RELENTLESS!

And I love it? You will too, I reckon.
02 Dec 2017Lights Out - 'Murder in the Script Department' & Interview with Neil Verma01:07:17
Northwestern University professor of Sound Studies Neil Verma joins me for a segment we call GOING DEEP. This week, we're exploring the classic horror of Arch Oboler's Lights Out, in a 1943 episode called "Murder in the Script Department". After the feature, Professor Verma teaches me about what was going on in this period of audio drama, I learn about how Oboler was a scriptomaniac man-about-town, and how voice actress Mercedes McCambridge (of EXORCIST fame) exerted absolute control over her instrument.

13 Jan 2018Point Mystic - 'White Rabbit', Parts I and II01:03:20
This week, we're exploring Christopher Reynaga's Point Mystic, playing "White Rabbit, Parts I and II" from that show. Point Mystic is a fiction show done up in a narrative-nonfiction style, à la This American Life—it's about Christopher's family, and the spookiness of the town they inhabit. The White Rabbit cycle was created in collaboration with Christopher's wife, Marguerite Croft, and their son Fox—and all three of them act (quite ably) in the show.

It's a fascinating mixture of nonfiction interviews and fiction segments, but presented in such a way that each supports the other, which isn't as common as you'd think.
20 Jan 2018Earbud Theater - 'The Sounds Below'00:34:53
This week, we're featuring Earbud Theater's "The Sounds Below", a chilling tale about a man plagued by panic and sleeplessness. Chris, unable to shake the trauma of his brother's death in a car accident, is making no headway with his therapist, and one night he goes wandering into the city, stumbling upon a strange little shop. The shopkeeper claims she sells the cure for fear. Would you buy it?
27 Jan 2018Bob Koester - 'Companions'01:08:27
Harry wanted to be alone, and so he was: as alone as a person can be, transmuted into tachyon particles and hurled into deepest space, with nothing but an artificial intelligence for company. He was alone, and then, gradually, he wasn't. Harry and his friend Cailyn, are commanders on distant power stations with nothing but their AIs and their correspondence for company. Harry and Cailyn receive an application that allows them to upload virtual surrogates of themselves so that they can communicate "in-person", and it's the connection forged via those surrogates that might just save the universe.
03 Feb 2018Kane and Feels, Paranormal Investigators - 'The Frozen Child'00:44:59

In this week, Kane and Feels take on the case of "The Frozen Child".

And to ring it in, we're celebrating by playing a new old favorite, Faith McQuinn's BOOM.

I talk about the I Love Lucy Show Syndrome, and how it plays into the way I feel about this excellent show.

Hey: This episode contains major spoilers for Season 1 of Boom, so if you don't wanna get spoiled, head on back to the website and listen from the beginning before starting this episode.

This is the first episode of Season Two, "Everything I Could".

02 May 2018Boom - Faith McQuinn00:44:27
This week, I sit down with Faith McQuinn, the director and creator of Boom: A Serial Drama Podcast.

And what a delight she is! We talk about Faith's history with radio drama, her filmmaker's background, Rovee the cleaning robot, and the long road to making Boom.

Boom is a show about denial and fury, masculinity and repression. It's perpetually relevant, and very smart—and Faith herself is no different! I'm excited to see what else this creator has up her sleeves.
09 May 2018Gone - 'Awakening'00:31:38
It's morning, and something's different. Everything's different. Everyone's gone. No commotion, no explanation. Suddenly the world is emptied of people.

Except for you.

This is Sunny Moraine's GONE, a taut, claustrophobic horror podcast about waking up and realizing you're entirely alone in the world. It's kind of the horror-counterpart to Michelle Nickolaisen's UNPLACED, at least superficially -- but while those two shows twine around similar themes, their execution couldn't be more different.

We play episode 1 of Gone, "Awakening". Stay tuned for next week's show, when show creator Sunny and I sit down for a chat about their creative process, their dissertation in sociology, and makin' scary fiction.
16 May 2018Gone - Sunny Moraine00:47:52
Sunny Moraine joins me to discuss their horror podcast, Gone, their stream-of-consciousness writing/performing style, their terrifying-but-fascinating doctoral dissertation, and so much more!

We discuss:

Sunny's origins in podcasting
LARPing?
The balance between mystery-box plots and Explaining Everything
Foucault's heterotopia, and spaces outside of normal rules
Mental illness and apocalypse (where did they all go?!)
Poetry!
Sunny's other fiction, particularly eyes I dare not meet in dreams
23 May 2018Fall of the House of Sunshine - 'Days of Future Fuzz'00:28:43
A struggle between flesh and fuzz. A mad emperor, cackling atop a grand pyramid of his own creation. A band of fleshy rebels with moxie, verve, and puffy-paint! It's an ass-kicking, name-taking space-age rock musical, back for more: this time it's even weirder.

YUP oh man oh man it's The Fall of the House of Sunshine, Season II: DAYS OF FUTURE FUZZ.
If you loved the previous utterly wackadoo sampling from this show, I think you're going to love Season 2 even more.

You don't need to have listened to the first season to make sense of the second. Suffice it to say that there was a sinister plot to detonate the fuzzatronic bomb—an arcane weapon that turned everything into fuzzy puppets and stuffed animals. Well. Almost everything.

There's a very fun guest star in this episode, to boot!

ENJOY, and stick around for next week's show, an interview with some of the creative dynamos behind this project!

I sat down with Matt Roi Berger, Jonathan Goldberg, and Marcus Bagala of The Fall of the House of Sunshine to discuss craft, prog rock albums, President Harding fighting a walrus, and, of course, teeth.
06 Jun 2018Wolf 359 - 'Memoria'00:47:30
This is one of my favorite episodes of any audio drama.

It encompasses everything I love about Wolf 359: its pacing, its plotting, its deep humanism, and its fantastic writing, music, and performances. Like all great science fiction, it is about more than just its text—and I think that's what attracted me to this episode.

I'll be talking to Gabriel Urbina and Sarah Shachat, the two main writers behind Wolf 359, next week -- and so to prep for that, I wanted to revisit an old favorite.

This episode falls in Season 3 of Wolf 359, so while I think it's a successful standalone (and I provide more context in the episode itself), you should certainly feel free to dive into the series and start from the beginning. I promise it's worth it.

What does "Memoria" represent to you? Let me know what you think; hit us up in the comments or talk at us on Twitter; we're @radiodrama.

And stay tuned: next week, David chats with Rudyard and Antigone themselves, Felix Trench and Beth Eyre!

15 Aug 2018Utopia - 'Gladness'01:06:15
This week we received a mysterious submission from a mysterious stranger who only identified themselves as Icewater.
Was it a dead-drop? Are we spies now? ARE YOU?!
Who knows, and who cares! Utopia is a fascinating new project that takes place in an alternate timeline that diverged from ours shortly after the first World War; the entire planet is now unified under a single government, everyone speaks Esperanto, and there's money and services sufficient to give everyone plenty of leisure time.
So why would anyone ever want out?

Our protagonist, Glacio, explores an ineffable well of discontentment within himself as we play episode 1 of Utopia: "Gladness".
