I am delighted that she accepted my invitation to join me on this episode to share her journey and insights, and I think so many of you will find this episode to be very helpful, insightful, and encouraging.

26 Sep 2017PHEC 006: Interview with Dr. Frazier Beatty: Public Health Education Pathways to Careers00:40:11

In this episode, I interview Dr. Frazier Beatty.  We discuss some of the different education pathways to careers in public health, specifically online and traditional brick and mortar universities.  Dr. Beatty has an impressive background including US military service, as well as other governmental agencies, nonprofit organizations,  and private industry.  He has completed undergraduate and graduate level education in both online and traditional university programs, served as faculty, dissertation chair, and University Research Reviewer (URR).  He truly has a heart for education and service in public health.  Additionally, he is the group owner of the American Public Health Association (APHA) group on LinkedIn.

02 Feb 2021PHEC 181: How Do I Determine My Niche, Coaching Call With Saran00:33:26

On this episode, I thought it would be helpful to share my coaching session with one of the first coaching giveaway winners, Saran, of the Public Health Consulting & Entrepreneurship EXPO group.

Saran is an excellent example of someone with years of public health experience, who has been quietly exploring ideas about consulting in their minds but not really having someone to talk it out with and fully explore the options.

I’ve often worked with clients to help them sort through their thoughts so that they can determine next steps

We rarely solve everything in one session, of course, but this is an example of a great place to start.

Listen carefully to hear how I guided her through narrowing down her ideas into a manageable focal point.

16 Apr 2019PHEC 087: Interview with Rosalie Aguilar, National Project Coordinator for Salud America!00:47:11

I’m delighted to introduce you to my special guest on this episode, Rosalie Aguilar.  Rosalie is the national project coordinator for Salud America!, which is a national Latino-focused organization that creates culturally relevant and research-based stories, videos, and tools to inspire people to start and support healthy changes to policies, systems, and environments where Latino children and families can equitably live, learn, work, and play.

The content created and distributed by Salud America! reaches over 250,000 moms, dads, providers, researchers, community leaders, and school personnel who are interested in working to push for healthy changes in schools and build health equity for Latino, and all kids.

I first met Rosalie when she reached out to me as asked me to cohost a TweetChat with Salud America!.  This is a weekly event that focuses on various topics that align with the organizations focus.  It’s held on Twitter’s platform every Tuesday at 12pm CST/1pm ET and uses the hashtag #saludtues.

The event that I cohosted along with the American Heart Association of Minnesota and a few other organizations, was titled the Impact of Sugar & Healthier Alternatives.  The timing of that particular event was aligned with podcast episode #53, Interview with Karen Akins, International Quit Soda Day, where Karen discussed the negative of soda and sugary drinks among children in Mexico.  If you haven’t heard that episode, then I encourage you to listen to it.

I enjoyed the experience and appreciated Rosalie for reaching out to me, and when I invited her to be my guest on the podcast she was equally excited.  Now, I knew it would be a very interesting interview, having her discuss Salud America!.  However, what I didn’t expect was her journey into public health to be so rich and full of experience, passion, and insight.

I am very excited to share that interview with all of you.

23 Apr 2019PHEC 088: Interview with Maria Mora Pinzon, MD, MS, Preventive Medicine and Public Health00:22:31

My guest on this episode is Dr. Maria Mora Pinzon.  She is a preventive medicine and public health physician. Doctors in this specialty use research, epidemiology, quality improvement and policy to promote health. Since they have full medical licenses, they are also able to diagnose and treat patients in a variety of settings.

Dr. Pinzon is the president-elect of the Young Physicians section of the American College of Preventive Medicine, which is the medical organization were preventive medicine physicians like Dr. Pinzon connect and obtain new tools and skills to advance their careers.  The purpose of the Young Physicians section is to identify needs of young physicians and develop initiatives to address those needs.

I first met Dr. Pinzon when she reached out to me and invited me to speak to the physicians in this section and discuss various career opportunities in public health and ways to diversify their income.  After learning more about the ACPM, I thought it would be a great idea to invite her on the podcast to share her public health journey. She also shares some ideas about opportunities for collaboration between public health students and preventive medicine physicians.

26 Oct 2021PHEC 219: Public Health Communication And Improving Data Access, With Joshua Smith00:28:40

Navigating your prospective career options can sometimes feel like trying to find something in a fog. You’re stumbling around, doing your best to reach your destination, but you don’t really know what it is you’re looking for until you find it; and then it all makes sense. That is how today’s guest, Joshua Smith, describes his journey into public health. Joshua is an enrolled member of the Klamath tribes and serves as a Health Communication and Evaluation Specialist with the Improving Data and Enhancing Access Project at the Northwest Tribal Epidemiology Center (NWTEC).

This episode of the Public Health Epidemiology Conversations (PHEC) Podcast is part of a special sponsored series of episodes, offering insights into the Tribal Epidemiology Centers in the US. 21 Aug 2018PHEC 053: Interview with Karen Akins, International Quit Soda Day00:31:27

Karen Akins joins me to discuss her passion-driven project, a documentary about the negative impact of sugary drinks among children in rural Mexico.  The documentary is scheduled to be complete around spring/summer of 2019.  We plan to have Karen come back to the show next year to discuss the film once its closer to the point of release, because there will be a great opportunity to participate in an educational health promotion campaign within your own local communities.  In this episode, we spend most of our time discussing International Quit Soda Day, which will be October 20, 2018.

Listen carefully as she tells her story, and you’ll be able to hear her passion for the various causes she describes and how that passion has been the driving force (something I’m always encouraging all of you to connect with.  If you haven’t listened yet, be sure to check out podcast episode #16, which is all about finding your passion for public health.) I also want you to listen for the opportunities to get involved in raising awareness of the impact of sugary drinks in both of the health promotion projects that she will be describing during the interview.

29 Aug 2017PHEC 002: What is an Epidemiologist?00:15:44
How do you explain your role as an epidemiologist to the non-scientific community?

As an epidemiologist, I often struggle with how to explain epidemiology to people who are not familiar with the field or my profession. I'm not sure when I've diluted the definition too much or when I've provided a little too much complex information. When I'm in a social setting and people are talking about themselves and describing what they do for a living, my mind is often racing for which versions of the definition of epidemiology will be the best to use in the conversation when it becomes my turn to respond. How do you respond in similar situations? What do you say? How do you explain your role as in epidemiologist in a way that is easily understood?

I explore some of the responses I've received to these questions in this episode.

Thank you for listening!
22 Sep 2020PHEC 162: Interview With Matthew Fox, DSc, MPH, Epidemiologist and Podcaster00:40:00

My guest on this episode is Dr. Matthew Fox, who is an epidemiologist and podcaster. Matthew Fox, DSc, MPH, is a Professor in the Departments of Epidemiology and Global Health at Boston University. He joins me to share his journey into public health, which I know you will enjoy.

12 Jun 2018PHEC 043: A "Typical" Work Day of an Epidemiologist00:19:40

This episode summarizes a discussion from our community, where a member wanted to learn more about the role of an epidemiologist.  She has just completed her undergraduate degree in life sciences and is interested in pursuing her master of public health, specifically in epidemiology.  She asked for feedback, comments, and feedback from other epidemiologists in the group.  This was a popular discussion, and one that I felt everyone could benefit from in the form of this podcast episode.  It is so important to have an understanding of the role of epidemiology, even if you’re not an epidemiologist.

13 Nov 2018PHEC 065: Why You Need to Get Involved with Public Health Associations00:08:36

At the time this episode is published, I’m attending the American Public Health Associations annual meeting in San Diego CA, along with about 12,000 other attendees. Meeting in person with your peers and colleagues is a powerful experience and something that I encourage all of you to make a priority.

22 Feb 2022PHEC 236: HIV Prevention and Epidemiology, With Courtney Allen, MPH00:26:06
Welcome back to our series on Tribal Epidemiology Centers and Public Health!

She currently holds the position of Public Health Advisor (PHAP) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at the Inter Tribal Council of Arizona Tribal Epidemiology Center, where she helps the community acquire funding for HIV prevention, as well as conducting surveillance reports, and other tasks.

We discuss Courtney’s work at the Arizona Tribal Epidemiology Center and the various ways that they are working to end the HIV epidemic in their communities.

Tuning in, you'll hear Courtney describe how stigma, distrust, and the presence of a pre-established HIV prevention program informs how communities respond to interventions and initiatives. Next, we unpack some of the ways that they are working to make HIV testing more anonymous and accessible through initiatives like the ‘I want a kit’ project, and why it’s so beneficial in the fight against this epidemic.

Courtney also shares an example of why a working knowledge of epidemiology is beneficial to anyone working in public health, along with some inspiring words of advice on why you should never sell yourself short.

Tune in for a wonderful and insightful conversation on Tribal Epidemiology Centers, a career in public health, and community!

12 Dec 2017PHEC 017: Five Essential Strategies for Building a Strong Professional Network00:18:56

In this episode, I discuss some important and essential strategies for building a strong professional network. Professional networks have become the primary way that people are finding new job opportunities.  Building a professional network is more than just having a profile on LinkedIn, although that is an important tool and resource to use.  Building a strong network starts with genuine beginnings that develop into long-lasting quality professional relationships.

Five Essential Strategies for Building a Strong Professional Network

  • The connections within your network should be mutually beneficial connections.  Don’t just look to connect with someone, considering only how they can help you.  Instead, think about what you have to offer them and how you may be able to help them as well.

  • Remember that relationship building is a process and takes time. Start with whatever the initial interest is, and look to build upon that as you get to know the other person

  • When your motives are sincere, then networking is more natural. When it’s all about you getting what you want from connecting with a person, then your intent can come across as mechanical, pushy, or rehearsed.  Versus being motivated by sincerely wanting to learn more, gather information, and share your ideas thoughts and plans with others (mutual and reciprocal -  learn and share – give and take)

  • It is a good idea to start networking with your close connections, and expand from there.  (family, friends, classmates, coworkers, supervisors, professors, and so on)

  • Start networking by Using social media, volunteering, alumni associations, professional societies and organizations, events at work or within your industry.
