This is the first episode of our fourth season and we spotlight the music of The Electric Light Orchestra. The band was merged from two psychedelic bands, The Move and The Idle Race, and the band member's musical aspirations were to expand on the orchestral aspect of The Beatles' sound of the late 1960's. Thought they didn't strictly tow that line, they did incorporate classical instrumentation into pop music. This is an overview of their musical career from the 60's into the 70's as led by Jeff Lynne.

Episode 77. The Move/The Idle Race

A continuation of the last episode that focused on the music of The Electric Light Orchestra. In this episode we listen to the two previous bands that helped form the concept of ELO. The founders of the band came from two separate groups; Jeff Lynne was in the Birmingham band The Idle Race, which was heavily influenced by The Beatles, Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd and Ray Davies of The Kinks. They played a blend of psychedelic music mixed in with English Music Hall styles and whimsical pop. Roy Wood and Bev Bevan came from the successful mid to late 60's English pop band The Move. They played straightforward rock n' roll until they fell under the influence of the flower power movement and produced some great psychedelic pop music. Ultimately Jeff Lynne was asked to join The Move and e and Roy Wood conceptualized doing music that had pop melodies blending in with orchestral music in the same manner The Beatles did on "Sgt. Pepper". The concept of ELO was born but the two bands they came from had their own unique identities and sounds. This episode presents a sample of their musical output back in the 1960's.

This is a focus on the early years of the band with Syd Barrett, who was the principal songwriter for the band. He was a very unique writer and he helped to transition the band from being a standard R&B group to a mesmerizing Day-Glow Psychedelic band. The show will feature music from the band's first singles and tracks from their sole complete album with Syd, "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn". Some of his solo work is also featured in this episode. But for many different reasons, their album didn't sell or catch on and they never got te opportunity to record a follow up album. This is the story of the bands Tomorrow, The Smoke and The Koobas. There were other bands in the same predicament but these three definitely should have had longer careers. These are three bands who were Uk. One Album Wonders. We'll hear select tracks from each band's sole album plus some 45's. Let's spread the word on these bands.

Episode 80. The Beach Boys "Pet Sounds/Smile" Era

In this episode we are going to listen to Brian Wilson's most creative and controversial period in making music. Brian had stopped touring with The Beach Boys and got into a creative phase writing new music without the distractions and stress of touring and he let his muse run wild. His writing had expanded in subject matter as he was getting more personal and moving away from the surf music the band was known for.
The peak of his creative powers were during the sessions for his "Pet Sounds" album. He reached a creative zenith with this album and sought to continue his momentum on his next album, "Smile". But for many reasons, He couldn't complete the album and soon abandoned the project. Some tracks were leaked out and many felt this collection was a lost classic. The myth of "Smile" has expanded all these decades later and a large cult has been devoted to it.

Episode 81. Strawberry Alarm Clock & The Chocolate Watch Band

They were two distinctly named bands that had two distinctly different sounds, but they were both from the same scene. The Strawberry Alarm Clock sang with vocal harmonies that were similar in arrangement to The Beach Boys and The Association. Musically they had a pleasing "Sunshine Pop" sound and achieved commercial success. The Chocolate Watch Band had a grittier garage rock sound and had sonic similarities to The Rolling Stones. They are favorites in garage rock compilation albums.
We will be listening to these two bands that were a part of the Summer of Love sound from 1967.

Episode 82. Iron Butterfly & The Blues Magoos

There were two bands that made a significant commercial breakthrough in the late 1960's, one from the west coast and the other from the east coast. Iron Butterfly came from the Los Angeles area and quickly ascended to success with their second album, "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". The album was the most successful in Atlantic Records history (pre-Led Zeppelin). The band became an influence on up-and-coming hard rock/heavy metal groups.
The Blues Magoos came from The Bronx in New York. Their sound was gritty and also melodic and very psychedelic-induced. They had a Top 10 hit that gave them national exposure and they have been featured prominently in many garage rock compilations. They became an influence on Garage rock, Indie and New Wave bands in successive years. These are two bands that made an immediate impact on the nation's consciousness.

Episode 84. The Small Faces & The Yardbirds

This episode spotlights two separate English bands that became influences on bands in the coming decades, The Small Faces and The Yardbirds. The Small Faces began as a Mod band that played pop and R & B music though by the time of the London Psychedelic scene the band became adept to experimenting in the studio while doing session work for Anfrew Loog Oldham's record label, Immediate Records. The band became one of the bands of their era and their effect on their peers and fans is still prevalent. The Yardbirds began as a Blues band and had the most amazing succession of guitar players in the band. They played the Blues with Eric Clapton and after he left The Yardbirds became more experimental with Jeff Beck. Then they added Jimmy Page into the mix and he shortly began to form a New Yardbirds band for touring though he changed the band's name to Led Zeppelin. The rest is Rock & Roll history.

The Quicksilver Messenger Service had a great reputation for their live performances. They were the cutting edge of the Bay Area bands.

Episode 87. The Stone Roses & The Charlatans UK

Towards the end of the 1980's, young people had become increasingly frustrated in England because of the effect of Thatcherism. For young lads up in Manchester, the music scene didn't reflect their own tastes and they were far removed from fashion and trends down in London. They began to form bands with a basic guitar-bass-drums setup and began playing a more garage rock style music and openly displayed their favorite 1960's influences like The Beatles, The Byrds and The early Rolling Stones records. The new bands became influenced by current bands of the time like Jesus & The Mary Chain, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Smiths and others. At the same time, Raves and "Acid House" music were started to be a regular occurrence throughout Britain and a new age of Psychedelia began.
The Stone Roses were the first Mersey band to gain public notice and they were soon followed by The Charlatans. These bands helped to initiate a new movement and influenced the coming of bands like Oasis.

Episode 88. Lush & The Darling Buds

English pop had gone through another musical enhancement in the early 90's. New bands were following the lead of Iris band My Bloody Valentine by emulating their dense guitar sounds generated by their array of effect pedals that they constantly employed. Musicians would look down on to their pedalboards and utilize every conceivable effect they could add to a song. The result was an intense audio sound with a wash of sonic enhancement to the music.
The musicians constantly looked down to their pedalboards as they pressed down on their many available effects. They didn't attempt to engage with the audience in any meaningful way. They kept looking down on the floor and they didn't bother to be showmen on stage. The sound was the thing along with the atmosphherics the pedals created. The English press sarcastically dubbed this the "Shoegaze movement. Here in America it was referenced as "Dream Pop".
Many bands updated their sound to include elements of Shoegaze and two distinct bands released albums that were heavily influenced by the new sound. 30 years ago in 1992, the band Lush released "Gala" and "Spooky" that further defined the genre. The Darling Buds released their album "Erotica" and expanded on the critical and commercial fortunes of the new sound. We will be listening to these two great bands that alternated between heavy guitar sounds and gentle melodic and ethereal sounds.

Episode 89. Kaleidoscope & Country Joe & The Fish

Two distinct bands of the Psychedelic age and from the west coast were Kaleidoscope from Los Angeles and Country Joe & The Fish from Berkeley. Kaleidoscope were an eccentric and experimental band that utilized many forms of stringed instruments and featured guitar great David Lindley. Country Joe & The Fish were similarly musically experimental and wrote in contemporary themes of the times. They sang about the cultural shift occurring among the generations. They openly protested the Vietnam War and they were leading proponents of the San Francisco Sound and of the Psychedelic Underground. Both bands leave an enduring legacy.

Episode 90. The Who Sell Out

The Who had gained public notice in 1967 and the band's leader Pete Townsend wanted to stand out from the pack. He conceived the idea of recording an entire album in the format of a radio station's programming day, specifically the English Pirate radio stations that were on ships moored on the English Channel. They were off the English coast away from the jurisdiction of the British Authorities and it's governing rules for broadcasting. The Pirates played music that was not played on official broadcast outlets like the BBC. Tye Pirates broadcasted their signals back to England and they gained a massive audience that quickly endeared themselves to the bands the Pirates were showcasing. The Beatles, Stones, Kinks and others received a massive push as of a result of the Pirates playing their records on constant rotation.
The Who were also benefactors of the format and Townshend gained more favor with them by recording a tribute to this movement. "The Who Sell Out" had new material interplayed with commercials and special jingles the band recorded to create the atmosphere of a Pirate Station broadcasting. This episode plays select numbers from the album as well as some other songs and jingles to compliment the original concept further. This album was a stop-gap for The Who as they went on to develop other concepts like "Tommy", "Who's Next" and "Quadropenia". This is The Who at their conceptual infancy.

Episode 91. The Crazy World of Arthur Brown & Hawkwind

This is a dual episode profiling The Crazy World of Arthur Brown and Hawkwind. Arthur Brown performed a stage act that went beyond The Who smashing their instruments or Jimi Hendrix burning his guitar. Arthur performed a Psychedelic shock rock spectacle, complete with flaming helmet. His sound incorporated Psych rock, Progressive rock, some Classical and the Blues. He was a major influence on bands like Alice Cooper and Kiss, wo in turn influenced successive generations of bands that emphasized theatrics.
Hawkwind were the very definition of the term "Space Rock". They, along with Pink Floyd, created otherworldly sounds that ascended their listeners to a different universe emotionally. This segment is a tribute to Nik Turner, who just passed away this past week, and we offer our gratitude to him for his music.

This episode focuses on two of Los Angeles's most Underground bands from the 1960's. They are the mercurial West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and The Freak Scene. The West Coast Pop Art Band had one of the first light shows, though their records didn't sell, and the band remains a footnote in the Psychedelic era. The Freak Scene were a studio-only ensemble wo tried to capture the sound and feeling of the underground nationwide on their sole album, "Psychedelic Psoul". Yes, that's where this show gained it's name.

They had their own scene and their own landmarks to celebrate their music. The San Francisco Sound was a cross between blues, some jug band music and the new electrified sounds that amplified the Bay Area scene. There were extended jams and studio experimentation. Mainly it was a party that everybody wanted to go to. The Monterey International Pop Festival created such a buzz that the party lasted all summer of '67. We will hear a sample of some of the important bands of the time.

Hollywood was the center of the music business and L.A. bands had a distinct advantage over other bands who lived in other States and towns. The Byrds started a new scene and transformed old Hollywood to the new hip capital of the nation. American bands were finally able to counter The British Invasion. These are the sounds of the Sunset Strip of the mid to late 60's.

Another new era began in the wake of the first wave of the British Invasion and this time the World went from a black and white bleak scene to a world that was glowing in glorious colours. The psychedelic era in London encapsulated multi media events, poetry readings, free schools, the first underground press with the publication of The International Times, the 14-Hour Technicolour Dream at the Alexandra Palace and the release of The Beatles 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" album. These are some of the bands that were part of the scene.
